Atherosclerosis has an important inflammatory component and acute cardiovascular events can be initiated by inflammatory processes occurring in advanced plaques. Fatty acids influence inflammation through a variety of mechanisms; many of these are mediated by, or associated with, the fatty acid composition of cell membranes. Human inflammatory cells are typically rich in the n-6 fatty acid arachidonic acid, but the contents of arachidonic acid and of the marine n-3 fatty acids eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA) and docosahexaenoic acid (DHA) can be altered through oral administration of EPA and DHA. Eicosanoids produced from arachidonic acid have roles in inflammation. EPA also gives rise to eicosanoids and these are usually biologically weak. EPA and DHA give rise to resolvins which are anti-inflammatory and inflammation resolving. EPA and DHA also affect production of peptide mediators of inflammation (adhesion molecules, cytokines, etc.). Thus, the fatty acid composition of human inflammatory cells influences their function; the contents of arachidonic acid, EPA and DHA appear to be especially important. The anti-inflammatory effects of marine n-3 polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFAs) may contribute to their protective actions towards atherosclerosis and plaque rupture.  相似文献

We studied composition and concentrations of fatty acids (FAs) in benthos from pebbly littoral region of the Yenisei River in a sampling site near Krasnoyarsk city (Siberia, Russia) for 1 year from March 2003 to February 2004. Special attention was paid to major long-chain polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFAs) of the ω3 family: eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA, 20:5ω3) and docosahexaenoic acids (DHA, 22:6ω3). In phytobenthos, which was dominated by diatoms, the annual maxima of EPA and DHA pool occurred in spring and early summer. In zoobenthos, EPA and DHA pool peaked in autumn, due mainly to an increase of the biomass of dominant taxa (gammarids) and to a moderate increase of the PUFA content per body weight. Seasonal peaks of EPA in overwintering insect larvae (chironomids and caddisflies) generally coincided with those of biomass of these larvae, while there was no such trend for amphipods and oligochaetes. In spring and early summer, the main part of ω3 PUFA, 40–97% of total amount, in the littoral region was contained in biomass of producers, i.e., benthic microalgae, and in autumn it was transferred to primary consumers—benthic invertebrates, which contained ∼76–93% of total ω3 PUFAs.  相似文献

Investigated were the changes in fatty acid composition, oxidation and enzymatic deterioration of lipids in frozen (−30°C) fish fillets from the Persian Gulf. The narrow barred Spanish mackerel ( Scomberomorus commersoni ) and white cheek shark ( Carcharhinus dussumieri ) were tested with storage times of 0, 1, 2, 3, 4, 5 and 6 months at −18°C. Statistical results showed that the major fatty acids among the saturated and monounsaturated fatty acids of each fish species were palmitic (C16:0) and oleic (C18:1n-9) acids, respectively. Both linoleic acid (C18:2n-6) and arachidonic acid (AA) (C20:4n-6) were predominant in total n-6 polyunsaturated fatty acids in both mackerel and shark. The EPA (eicosapentaenoic acid; C20:5 n-3) and DHA (docosahexaenoic acid; C22:6 n-3) acids were the major fatty acids among total n-3 acids in both fishes. During frozen storage, the PUFA (40.1 and 23.94%), n-3 (48 and 42.83%), ω 3/ ω 6 (41.36 and 50%), PUFA/SFA (56 and 42.23%) and EPA + DHA/C16 (55.55 and 46.66%) contents decreased in S. commersoni and C. dussumieri , respectively. Also peroxide, thiobarbituric acid (TBA) and free fatty acid (FFA) values significantly increased (P < 0.01) with the time of storage.  相似文献

Whole body cryotherapy (WBC) is a treatment often used by athletes as part of biological renewal. Despite the large interest in this form therapy there is still a lack of information on the effects of WBC on the concentration of fatty acids in erythrocyte membranes. Our study aimed at comparing the fatty acids (FA) composition of erythrocyte membranes of athletes after one session and after a series of sessions of whole body cryostimulation. In our study small changes in the level of total cholesterol (decrease) were observed 24 h after a single session. After the twelfth session of whole body cryostimulation, the level of saturated fatty acids (SFA), mainly palmitic acid (C16:0) and n-3 fatty acid eicosapentaenoic (EPA, C20:5n-3) increased almost two-times fold in the red blood cell membranes. The level of n-6 polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFA n-6), mainly gamma-linolenic acid (C18:3n-6) as well as trans fatty acids (elaidic acid) decreased in the erythrocyte membranes from men after a series of session in a cryochamber, when compared to the control sample. The n-3/n-6 FA ratio in the erythrocyte membranes was higher after twelfth session in a cryochamber in comparison to the control sample.The data obtained during our study will be important for further research regarding the biochemistry of lipids in men after sessions of whole body cryostimulation.  相似文献

We investigated whether supplementation with arachidonic acid (20:4 omega 6; AA), or a combination of AA and docosahexaenoic acid (22:6 omega 3; DHA) would affect human milk polyunsaturated fatty acid (PUFA) composition. Ten women were daily supplemented with 300 mg AA, eight with 300 mg AA, 110 mg eicosapentaenoic acid (20:5 omega 3; EPA) and 400 mg DHA, for one week and eight women served as unsupplemented controls. Milk samples were collected on days 0, 1 and 7. The fatty acid composition of the milk was analyzed by capillary gas chromatography with flame ionisation detection. Supplementation with AA alone had no effect on breastmilk AA, but tended to reduce EPA and DHA levels. Administration of a combination of AA, EPA and DHA tended to increase both milk AA and long chain PUFA (LCPUFA)omega 3 content. A larger simultaneous increase of milk AA, DHA and EPA than observed in the present study can probably be accomplished by the use of a combination of a lower LCPUFA omega 6/LCPUFA omega 3 ratio and higher AA, EPA and DHA dosages.  相似文献

We investigated lipid content and fatty acid (FA) composition of gastrointestinal tract contents in free-living, herbivorous European hares (Lepus europaeus). Mean crude fat content in hare stomachs and total gastrointestinal (GI) tracts was higher than expected for typical herbivore forages and peaked in late fall when hares massively deposited body fat reserves. Changes of FA proportions in different parts of the GI-tract indicated a highly preferential absorption of polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFA). A further reduction of PUFA content in the caecum, along with the appearance of odd-chained FAs in caecum, caecotrophes, and colon content, pointed to a biohydrogenation of PUFA in the hare’s hindgut. GI-tract contents showed significant seasonal changes in their FA composition. Among PUFA, α-linolenic acid peaked in spring while linoleic acid was predominant in late summer and fall, which probably reflected changes in the plant composition of forage. However, independent of seasonal changes, GI-tracts of lactating females showed a significantly (+33%) higher content of linoleic acid, a FA that is known to increase reproductive performance in European hares. This finding suggests that lactating females actively selected dietary plants rich in linoleic acid, a PUFA that may represent a limited resource for European hares.  相似文献

We studied the relationship between dietary intake and the blood compositions of eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA), docosahexaenoic acid (DHA), and arachidonic acid (ARA) in four study groups with different ages and sexes. One hundred and four subjects were recruited. Dietary records together with photographic records from 28 consecutive days were amassed and the fatty acid composition in erythrocyte membranes and plasma lipid fractions was analyzed. Fish intake in the elderly group was significantly higher than that in the young group in both men and women. The compositions of ARA in erythrocytes and plasma phospholipids in the elderly were lower than those in the young, but the ARA intake was nearly identical. In the elderly group, the percentage of dietary ARA consumed at the same time as EPA and DHA derived from fish was high. We considered that these fatty acids markedly inhibited the incorporation of dietary ARA into blood phospholipids.  相似文献

Identification of lipid fatty acids (FA) and studying of their seasonal dynamics in water moss Fontinalis antipyretica from the Yenisei River were carried out by means of gas chromatography-mass spectrometry. FA composition of water moss was notable for a relatively low level of saturated acids and predominance of polyunsaturated acids (PUFA) with double bonds (accounting for more than 30% of total FA) and polyunsaturated acids with double and triple bonds (acetylenic acids, accounting for more than 40% of total FA). Among PUFA, α- and γ-linolenic (18:3ω3 and 18:3ω6), arachidonic (20:4ω6), and eicosapentaenoic (20:5ω3) acids prevailed. Relative content of PUFA from ω3-family was the greatest in spring, and the level of PUFA from ω6-group was essentially the same throughout all the seasons. In the biomass of water moss, we identified seven acetylenic acids; among them octadeca-9,12-dien-6-ynoic (6a,9,12-18:3), octadeca-9,12,15-trien-6-ynoic (6a,9,12,15-18:4), and eicosa-11,14-dien-8-ynoic (8a,11,14-20:3) acids were predominant. For the first time, in the lipids of water moss we identified an acetylenic eicosa-11,14,17-trien-8-ynoic acid (8a,11,14,15-20:4). Relative content of acetylenic acids in the total FA was great throughout the entire period of investigation with the peak accumulation in summer. Owing to a steadily high level in the biomass of water moss and the lack of other producers of these acids in the ecosystem, acetylenic FA are highly specific biochemical markers useful for the investigation of trophic interactions between higher aquatic plants and zoobenthos.  相似文献

We investigated the effects of an OH (Fe2+/H2O2) generator system of erythrocyte membrane, particularly the time-course of lipid peroxidation as estimated by measurement of conjugated dienes, thiobarbituric reactive substances (TBARS), lipofuscin-like pigments, and α-tocopherol. Polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFAs), especially arachidonic acid (20∶4 ω 6) and docosahexenoic acid (22∶6 ω 3), were also measured. Erythrocyte membranes were suspended in phosphate buffer containing Fe2+ (200 μM) and H2O2 (1.42 mM), and incubated in a shaking water bath at 37°C. Initially, there was an increase in TBARS and lipofuscin-like pigments, two well-known end products of PUFA oxidative degradation, whereas PUFAs remained unchanged (incubation time: 1 h). After two or more hours of incubation, marked lipid peroxidation was noted, with the appearance of conjugated dienes and a decrease of PUFAs, indicating that lipid peroxidation had occurred after a lag phase during which TBARS were not produced from PUFAs. IntroductionLong chain omega-3 polyunsaturated fatty acids (LC n-3 PUFA) such as EPA and DHA have been shown to possess beneficial health effects, and it is believed that many of their effects are mediated by their oxygenated products (oxylipins). Recently, we have shown that serum levels of several hydroxy, epoxy, and dihydroxy FAs are dependent on the individual status of the parent FAs in a cohort of normo- and hyperlipidemic subjects. So far, the effect of an increased dietary LC n-3 PUFA intake on hydroxy, epoxy, and dihydroxy FA levels has not been investigated in subjects with mild combined hyperlipidemia.Subjects and methodsIn the present study, we compared oxylipin patterns of 10 hyperlipidemic (cholesterol >200 mg/dl; triglyceride >150 mg/ml) and 10 normolipidemic men in response to twelve weeks of LC n-3 PUFA intake (1.14 g DHA and 1.56 g EPA). Levels of 44 free hydroxy, epoxy and dihydroxy FAs were analyzed in serum by LC-MS. Additionally, oxylipin levels were compared with their parent PUFA levels in erythrocyte membranes; a biomarker for the individual PUFA status.ResultsDifferences in the oxylipin pattern between normo- and hyperlipidemic subjects were minor before and after treatment. In all subjects, levels of EPA-derived oxylipins (170–4800 pM) were considerably elevated after LC n-3 PUFA intake (150–1400%), the increase of DHA-derived oxylipins (360–3900 pM) was less pronounced (30–130%). The relative change of EPA in erythrocyte membranes is strongly correlated (r≥0.5; p<0.05) with the relative change of corresponding epoxy and dihydroxy FA serum levels. The effect on arachidonic acid (AA)-derived oxylipin levels (140–27,100 pM) was inconsistent.Discussion and conclusionsThe dietary LC PUFA composition has a direct influence on the endogenous oxylipin profile, including several highly biological active EPA- and DHA-derived lipid mediators. The shift in oxylipin pattern appears to be dependent on the initial LC PUFA status particularly for EPA. The finding that also levels of other oxylipins derived from ALA, LA or AA are modified by LC n-3 PUFA intake might suggest that at least some of the effects of EPA and DHA could be mediated by a shift in the entire oxylipin profile.  相似文献

The fatty acid composition of erythrocyte membranes was investigated in 21 healthy men after 6 wk of varying intakes of eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA, 20:5n-3) and docosahexaenoic acid (DHA, 22:6n-3). In one experiment, 12 subjects were fed three diets in a 3 x 3 crossover design: an essentially fish-free control diet, a fish diet (0.15 g EPA/d, 0.41 g DHA/d) and the same fish-based diet supplemented with 5 g/d fish oil (Fish + Oil: 0.99 g EPA/d, 0.99 g DHA/d). A 6 wk wash-out period was allowed between each diet. In another experiment, 11 subjects were supplemented with 5 g/d fish oil alone for 6 wk (0.84 g EPA/d, 0.48 g DHA/d). After fish or fish oil feeding, the percent proportion of EPA and DHA in the erythrocyte membranes rose at the expense of linoleic and arachidonic acids. After 6 wk on the fish-based diets, EPA incorporation approached saturation, with the incremental increases being proportional to the amounts supplied by the diets. In contrast, parallel increases were observed for erythrocyte DHA even though the Fish + Oil diet was supplying twice as much DHA as the fish alone diet. These observations imply different metabolic rates for EPA and DHA and their importance is discussed in terms of the value of erythrocyte EPA versus DHA as markers for fish and fish oil consumption.  相似文献

While enteral nutrition is the basis for the critically ill, parenteral nutrition is often used when a sufficient enteral nutrition is not or not fully achievable. Lipids are a mainstay of caloric supply in both cases as they combine the provision of building blocks for the membranes and are precursors for function molecules including lipid mediators bearing the ability to influence immunity. Pro-inflammatory lipid mediators as prostaglandins and leukotrienes are generated from arachidonic acid (AA), a key member of the n-6 polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFA). In contrast, lipid mediators derived from the n-3 fatty acids eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA) or docosahexaenoic acid (DHA) may exhibit less inflammatory properties compared to their AA-derived counterparts. Furthermore, intercellular mediators as resolvins and protectins are generated from n-3 fatty acids. They induce the resolution of inflammation, hence the name resolution phase interaction product—resolvin. Modulating the amount of PUFA and the n-6/n-3 ratio were investigated as means to change the inflammatory response and improve the outcome of patients. Experimental data showed that n-3 fatty acids may improve acute lung injury and sepsis in animal models. Studies in patients undergoing major surgery with application of n-3 fatty acids demonstrated beneficial effects in terms of reduction of length of stay and infectious complications. Clinical data hints that this concept may also improve outcome in critically ill patients. Additionally, experimental and clinical data suggest that a reduction in n-6 PUFA may change the immune response. In conclusion, modulating the amount of PUFA, the n-6/n-3 ratio and the composition of lipid emulsions may prove to be a useful means to improve the outcome of critically ill patients.  相似文献

In the present study, the lipid raft composition of a canine mastocytoma cell line (C2) was analyzed. Lipid rafts were well separated from non-raft plasma membranes using a detergent-free isolation technique. To study the influence of n-3 and n-6 polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFA) on raft fatty acid composition in comparison to non-raft cell membrane, C2 were supplemented with one of the following: α-linolenic acid, eicosapentaenoic acid, docosahexaenoic acid, linoleic acid or arachidonic acid. Enrichment of the culture medium with a specific PUFA resulted in an increase in the content of this fatty acid both in rafts and non-raft membranes. Contents of cholesterol and protein were found not to be affected by the changes in the fatty acid profiles. In conclusion, our data provide strong evidence that PUFA modulate lipid composition and physiological properties of membrane micro domains of mast cells which in turn may have effects on mast cell function.  相似文献

This study was undertaken to better understand the physiological role of the retinoylation process in steroidogenic tissues. In adrenal gland mitochondria, the retinoylation extent was found equal to that of testes mitochondria but without ATP in the incubation buffer. We pointed out that the endogenous mitochondrial ATP in adrenal glands is much higher than in testes, about 1.3 x 10−2 M and 5.2 x 10−8 M, respectively. In addition, less CoASH is required for the maximal acylation activity of the retinoyl moiety to protein(s) compared to testes. The fatty acid analysis revealed a different composition of mitochondrial membranes of these two tissues. Among the different values of fatty acids, it is important to note that adrenal glands contain a much higher amount of C18:0 and a much lower amount of C22:5 ω6 and C22:6 ω3 than testes in the mitochondrial membranes. In addition, there were also differences in arachidonic acid (ARA, C20:4 ω6) content between adrenal glands and testes mitochondria. These different values in the fatty acids composition should explain the different extent of the retinoylation process between the two organs.  相似文献

Polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFAs) can be classified in n-3 fatty acids and n-6 fatty acids, and in westernized diet the predominant dietary PUFAs are n-6 fatty acids. Both types of fatty acids are precursors of signaling molecules with opposing effects, that modulate membrane microdomain composition, receptor signaling and gene expression. The predominant n-6 fatty acid is arachidonic acid, which is converted to prostaglandins, leukotrienes and other lipoxygenase or cyclooxygenase products. These products are important regulators of cellular functions with inflammatory, atherogenic and prothrombotic effects. Typical n-3 fatty acids are docosahexaenoic acid and eicosapentaenoic acid, which are competitive substrates for the enzymes and products of arachidonic acid metabolism. Docosahexaenoic acid- and eicosapentaenoic acid-derived eicosanoids antagonize the pro-inflammatory effects of n-6 fatty acids. n-3 and n-6 fatty acids are ligands/modulators for the nuclear receptors NFkappaB, PPAR and SREBP-1c, which control various genes of inflammatory signaling and lipid metabolism. n-3 Fatty acids down-regulate inflammatory genes and lipid synthesis, and stimulate fatty acid degradation. In addition, the n-3/n-6 PUFA content of cell and organelle membranes, as well as membrane microdomains strongly influences membrane function and numerous cellular processes such as cell death and survival.  相似文献

IntroductionDisturbances in onset and resolution of inflammation in chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) are incompletely understood. Dietary polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFAs) can be converted into lipid mediators here collectively named oxylipins. These include classical eicosanoids, but also pro-resolving mediators. A balanced production of pro-inflammatory and pro-resolving oxylipins is of importance for adequate inflammatory responses and subsequent return to homeostasis.ObjectivesHere we investigated if PUFA metabolism is disturbed in COPD patients.MethodsFree PUFA and oxylipin levels were measured in induced sputum samples from the Bergen COPD cohort and COPD exacerbation study using liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry. Additionally, effects of whole cigarette smoke on PUFA metabolism in air-liquid interface cultures of primary bronchial epithelial cells were assessed.ResultsSignificantly lower levels of free alpha-linolenic acid, linoleic acid and eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA) were detected in sputum from stable COPD patients compared to controls. During acute exacerbation (AE), levels of free arachidonic acid and docosapentaenoic acid were higher than in stable COPD patients. Furthermore, levels of omega-3 EPA- and docosahexaenoic acid-derived oxylipins were lower in sputum from stable COPD patients compared to controls. Cyclooxygenase-2-converted mediators were mostly increased during AE. In vitro studies additionally showed that cigarette smoke exposure may also directly contribute to altered epithelial PUFA metabolism, and indirectly by causing airway epithelial remodelling.ConclusionsOur findings show significant differences in PUFA metabolism in COPD patients compared to controls, further changed during AE. Airway epithelial remodelling may contribute to these changes. These findings provide new insight in impaired inflammatory resolution in COPD.  相似文献

This study evaluated the effects of season and spatial distribution on the fatty acid composition of Patella depressa gonads and Patella spp. soft body tissue. The results show that the quantitatively most important fatty acids were the saturated fatty acids (SFA) 16:0, 14:0 and 18:0; the monounsaturated fatty acids (MUFA) 18:1(n-7), 18:1(n-9), 16:1(n-7) and 20:1(n-9) and the polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFA) eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA 20:5(n-3)), and arachidonic acid (ARA 20:4(n-6)). P. depressa and P. ulyssiponensis soft body fatty acid profiles revealed significant differences between sexes; males showed significantly higher percentages of PUFA, highly unsaturated fatty acids (HUFA), (n-3) fatty acids and ARA, while in females significantly higher proportions of MUFA were found. Analysis of variance on the fatty acid composition of P. depressa gonads revealed significant differences between sexes, which were more marked than when the whole body was analysed. Males showed a significantly higher percentage of PUFA, HUFA, fatty acids from the (n-3) and (n-6) series, ARA and EPA, while females were seen to have higher proportions of SFA, MUFA and total fatty acid methyl esters (FAME). Some variability was seen to occur due to shore location and seasons, but these effects were not so obvious.  相似文献

SUMMARY 1. We studied the composition of fatty acids (FAs) in the seston from two small freshwater reservoirs (Bugach and Lesnoi) with distinct periodicity of domination by cyanobacteria and eukaryotic algae during the growth season.
2. The diatoms in the both reservoirs were characterised by a high content of 14:0 and C16 unsaturated acids, whereas that of the essential FA 20:5ω3 [eicosapentanoic acid (EPA)] was low. The correlation between this polyunsaturated FA (PUFA) and diatom biomass was not significant in either reservoir. The percentage of 20:5ω3 in seston significantly correlated with the biomass of euglenophyta in Bugach and dinophyta in Lesnoi. Hence the diatoms, usually referred as a valuable food for zooplankton, were not an important source of the essential PUFA in these systems.
3. The dominant cyanobacteria in Bugach, and the green algae in Lesnoi, both contained the same marker acids: 18:3ω3 and 18:2ω6. Hence, a discrimination between these two phytoplanktonic groups on the basis of FA biomarkers may be difficult in some cases.
4. We found no significant correlation between the content of 20:5ω3 in seston and the biomass of the dominant daphniids in either reservoir. This is contrary to expectations, based on the literature, that EPA is generally important. Rather, the biomass of the two dominant Daphnia species in Bugach correlated strongly with the content of 18:3ω3 in the seston. The cyanobacteria were a probable source of this ω3 FA for Daphnia . We conclude that EPA is not always important for Daphnia populations although, in such cases, some other PUFA (e.g. 18:3ω3) might be related to their growth.  相似文献

An arachidonic-producing fungus, Mortierella alpina 1S-4, was found to accumulate -unsaturated fatty acids of C-20 chain length together with 1-hexadecenoic acid, 1-octadecenoic acid and so on, when grown on 1-alkenes, i.e., 1-hexadecene and 1-octadecene. The results of mass spectroscopy and proton NMR showed that a C20 polyunsaturated fatty acid (PUFA) is a novel cis-5,8,11,14,19-eicosapentaenoic acid (20:51). This PUFA was obtained at a yield of 0.13 mg/ml culture broth (2.8% of the fungal total fatty acid content) on cultivation of the fungus in a medium containing 4% (v/v) 1-hexadecene and 1% yeast extract at 28°C for 1 week. Investigation of the distribution of fatty acids showed that about 90% (by mol.) of the PUFA was present in the triglycerides and 10% was in the phospholipid fraction. About 70% of that found in the phospholipids was phosphatidylcholine (PC) and the value accounted for ca. 10% of the total fatty acid content. 1. Poikilothermic animals incorporate more polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFAs) into their cellular membranes as temperature declines, suggesting an increased sensitivity to PUFA limitation in cool conditions. To test this we raised Daphnia magna at different temperatures and investigated the effect of varying dietary PUFA on life history parameters (i.e. growth, reproduction) and the PUFA composition of body tissue and eggs. 2. Upon a PUFA‐rich diet (Cryptomonas sp.) females showed higher concentrations of several ω3 PUFAs in their body tissue at 15 °C than at 20 °C and 25 °C, indicating a greater structural requirement for ω3 PUFAs at low temperature. Their eggs had an equal but higher concentration of ω3 PUFAs than their body tissue. 3. In a life history experiment at 15 and 20 °C we supplemented a diet of a PUFA‐free cyanobacterium with the ω3 PUFA eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA). The growth of D. magna was more strongly EPA limited at low temperature. A greater requirement for structural EPA at 15 °C was indicated by a steeper increase in somatic EPA content with dietary EPA compared to 20 °C. 4. At 20 °C the development of eggs to successful hatching was high when EPA was supplied to the mothers. At 15 °C the hatching success was generally poor, despite of a higher maternal provision of EPA to eggs, compared to that at 20 °C, suggesting that EPA alone was insufficient for proper neonatal development at the low temperature. The growth of offspring from mothers raised at 20 °C without EPA supplementation was very low, indicating that the negative effects of EPA deficiency can be carried on to the next generation. 5. The fatty acid composition of Daphnia sp. in published field studies shows increasing proportions of saturated fatty acids with increasing environmental temperature, whereas ω3 PUFAs and EPA show no clear pattern, suggesting that variations in dietary PUFA may mask temperature‐dependent adjustments in ω3 PUFA concentrations of cladocerans in nature.  相似文献
