The strong coupling between the flow in coronary vessels and the mechanical deformation of the myocardial tissue is a central feature of cardiac physiology and must therefore be accounted for by models of coronary perfusion. Currently available geometrically explicit vascular models fail to capture this interaction satisfactorily, are numerically intractable for whole organ simulations, and are difficult to parameterise in human contexts. To address these issues, in this study, a finite element formulation of an incompressible, poroelastic model of myocardial perfusion is presented. Using high-resolution ex vivo imaging data of the coronary tree, the permeability tensors of the porous medium were mapped onto a mesh of the corresponding left ventricular geometry. The resultant tensor field characterises not only the distinct perfusion regions that are observed in experimental data, but also the wide range of vascular length scales present in the coronary tree, through a multi-compartment porous model. Finite deformation mechanics are solved using a macroscopic constitutive law that defines the coupling between the fluid and solid phases of the porous medium. Results are presented for the perfusion of the left ventricle under passive inflation that show wall-stiffening associated with perfusion, and that show the significance of a non-hierarchical multi-compartment model within a particular perfusion territory.  相似文献

A computational model for retinal hemodynamics accounting for ocular curvature is presented. The model combines (i) a hierarchical Darcy model for the flow through small arterioles, capillaries and small venules in the retinal tissue, where blood vessels of different size are comprised in different hierarchical levels of a porous medium; and (ii) a one-dimensional network model for the blood flow through retinal arterioles and venules of larger size. The non-planar ocular shape is included by (i) defining the hierarchical Darcy flow model on a two-dimensional curved surface embedded in the three-dimensional space; and (ii) mapping the simplified one-dimensional network model onto the curved surface. The model is solved numerically using a finite element method in which spatial domain and hierarchical levels are discretized separately. For the finite element method, we use an exterior calculus-based implementation which permits an easier treatment of non-planar domains. Numerical solutions are verified against suitably constructed analytical solutions. Numerical experiments are performed to investigate how retinal hemodynamics is influenced by the ocular shape (sphere, oblate spheroid, prolate spheroid and barrel are compared) and vascular architecture (four vascular arcs and a branching vascular tree are compared). The model predictions show that changes in ocular shape induce non-uniform alterations of blood pressure and velocity in the retina. In particular, we found that (i) the temporal region is affected the least by changes in ocular shape, and (ii) the barrel shape departs the most from the hemispherical reference geometry in terms of associated pressure and velocity distributions in the retinal microvasculature. These results support the clinical hypothesis that alterations in ocular shape, such as those occurring in myopic eyes, might be associated with pathological alterations in retinal hemodynamics.  相似文献

The purpose of the present study was to develop a computationally efficient finite element model that could be useful for parametric analysis of the biphasic poroviscoelastic (BPVE) behavior of articular cartilage under various loading conditions. The articular cartilage was modeled as the BPVE mixture of a porous, linear viscoelastic, and incompressible solid and an inviscid and incompressible fluid. A finite element (FE) formulation of the BPVE model was developed using two different algorithms, the continuous and discrete spectrum relaxation functions for the viscoelasticity of the solid matrix. These algorithms were applied to the creep and stress relaxation responses to the confined compression of articular cartilage, and a comparison of their performances was made. It was found that the discrete spectrum algorithm significantly saved CPU time and memory, as compared to the continuous spectrum algorithm. The consistency analysis for the present FE formulation was performed in comparison with the IMSL, a commercially available numerical software package. It was found that the present FE formulation yielded consistent results in predicting model behavior, whereas the IMSL subroutine produced inconsistent results in the velocity field, and thereby in the strain calculation.  相似文献

A computational model of an oscillatory laminar flow of an incompressible Newtonian fluid has been carried out in the proximal part of human tracheobronchial trees, either normal or with a strongly stenosed right main bronchus. After acquisition with a multislice spiral CT, the thoracic images are processed to reconstruct the geometry of the trachea and the first six bronchus generations and to virtually travel inside this duct network. The facetisation associated with the 3D reconstruction of the tracheobronchial tree is improved to get a computation-adapted surface triangulation, which leads to a volumic mesh composed of tetrahedra. The Navier-Stokes equations associated with the classical boundary conditions and different values of the flow dimensionless parameters are solved using the finite element method. The airways are supposed to be rigid during rest breathing. The flow distribution among the set of bronchi is determined during the respiratory cycle. Cycle reproducibility and mesh size effects on the numerical results are examined. Helpful qualitative data are provided rather than accurate quantitative results in the context of multimodelling, from image processing to numerical simulations.  相似文献

Studies of the origin of pulmonary blood flow heterogeneity have highlighted the significant role of vessel branching structure on flow distribution. To enable more detailed investigation of structure-function relationships in the pulmonary circulation, an anatomically based finite element model of the arterial and venous networks has been developed to more accurately reflect the geometry found in vivo. Geometric models of the arterial and venous tree structures are created using a combination of multidetector row X-ray computed tomography imaging to define around 2,500 vessels from each tree, a volume-filling branching algorithm to generate the remaining accompanying conducting vessels, and an empirically based algorithm to generate the supernumerary vessel geometry. The explicit generation of supernumerary vessels is a unique feature of the computational model. Analysis of branching properties and geometric parameters demonstrates close correlation between the model geometry and anatomical measures of human pulmonary blood vessels. A total of 12 Strahler orders for the arterial system and 10 Strahler orders for the venous system are generated, down to the equivalent level of the terminal bronchioles in the bronchial tree. A simple Poiseuille flow solution, assuming rigid vessels, is obtained within the arterial geometry of the left lung, demonstrating a large amount of heterogeneity in the flow distribution, especially with inclusion of supernumerary vessels. This model has been constructed to accurately represent available morphometric data derived from the complex asymmetric branching structure of the human pulmonary vasculature in a form that will be suitable for application in functional simulations.  相似文献

The metabolic dissipation in Murray's minimum energy hypothesis includes only the blood metabolism. The metabolic dissipation of the vascular tree, however, should also include the metabolism of passive and active components of the vessel wall. In this study, we extend the metabolic dissipation to include blood metabolism, as well as passive and active components of the vessel wall. The analysis is extended to the entire vascular arterial tree rather than a single vessel as in Murray's formulation. The calculations are based on experimentally measured morphological data of coronary artery network and the longitudinal distribution of blood pressure along the tree. Whereas the model includes multiple dissipation sources, the total metabolic consumption of a complex vascular tree is found to remain approximately proportional to the cumulative arterial volume of the unit. This implies that the previously described scaling relations for the various morphological features (volume, length, diameter, and flow) remain unchanged under the generalized condition of metabolic requirements of blood and blood vessel wall.  相似文献

This paper presents a finite element formulation suitable for large-strain modeling of biological tissues and uses this formulation to implement an accurate finite element model for mitral valve leaflet tissue. First, an experimentally derived strain energy function is obtained from literature. This function is implemented in finite elements using the mixed pressure-displacement formulation. A modification is made to aid in maintaining positive definiteness of the stiffness matrix at low strains. The numerical implementation is shown to be accurate in representing the analytical model of material behavior. The mixed formulation is useful for modeling of soft biological tissues in general, and the model presented here is applicable to finite element simulation of mitral valve mechanics.  相似文献

In a class of model vascular trees having distensible blood vessels, we prove that flow partitioning throughout the tree remains constant, independent of the nonzero driving flow (or nonzero inlet to terminal outlet pressure difference). Underlying assumptions are: (1) every vessel in the tree exhibits the same distensibility relationship given by $D/D_0 = f(P)$ where $D$ is the diameter which results from distending pressure $P$ and $D_0$ is the diameter of the individual vessel at zero pressure (each vessel may have its own individual $D_0$). The choice of $f(P)$ includes distensibilities often used in vessel biomechanics modeling, e.g., $f(P) = 1 + \alpha P$ or $f(P) = b + (1-b) \exp(-c P)$, as well as $f(P)$ which exhibit autoregulatory behavior. (2) Every terminal vessel in the tree is subjected to the same terminal outlet pressure. (3) Bernoulli effects are ignored. (4) Flow is nonpulsatile. (5) Blood viscosity within any individual vessel is constant. The results imply that for a vascular tree consistent with assumptions 2–5, the flow distribution calculations based on a rigid geometry, e.g., $D=D_0$, also gives the flow distribution when assuming the common distensibility relationships. The pulsatility of coronary circulation can be accurately simulated on the basis of the measured branching pattern, vascular geometry, and material properties of the coronary vasculature. A Womersley-type mathematical model is developed to analyze pulsatile blood flow in diastole in the absence of vessel tone in the entire coronary arterial tree on the basis of previously measured morphometric data. The model incorporates a constitutive equation of pressure and cross-section area relation based on our previous experimental data. The formulation enables the prediction of the impedance, the pressure distribution, and the pulsatile flow distribution throughout the entire coronary arterial tree. The model is validated by experimental measurements in six diastolic arrested, vasodilated porcine hearts. The agreement between theory and experiment is excellent. Furthermore, the present pulse wave results at low frequency agree very well with previously published steady-state model. Finally, the phase angle of flow is seen to decrease along the trunk of the major coronary artery and primary branches toward the capillary vessels. This study represents the first, most extensive validated analysis of Womersley-type pulse wave transmission in the entire coronary arterial tree down to the first segment of capillaries. The present model will serve to quantitatively test various hypotheses in the coronary circulation under pulsatile flow conditions.  相似文献

Biological soft tissues and cells may be subjected to mechanical as well as chemical (osmotic) loading under their natural physiological environment or various experimental conditions. The interaction of mechanical and chemical effects may be very significant under some of these conditions, yet the highly nonlinear nature of the set of governing equations describing these mechanisms poses a challenge for the modeling of such phenomena. This study formulated and implemented a finite element algorithm for analyzing mechanochemical events in neutral deformable porous media under finite deformation. The algorithm employed the framework of mixture theory to model the porous permeable solid matrix and interstitial fluid, where the fluid consists of a mixture of solvent and solute. A special emphasis was placed on solute-solid matrix interactions, such as solute exclusion from a fraction of the matrix pore space (solubility) and frictional momentum exchange that produces solute hindrance and pumping under certain dynamic loading conditions. The finite element formulation implemented full coupling of mechanical and chemical effects, providing a framework where material properties and response functions may depend on solid matrix strain as well as solute concentration. The implementation was validated using selected canonical problems for which analytical or alternative numerical solutions exist. This finite element code includes a number of unique features that enhance the modeling of mechanochemical phenomena in biological tissues. The code is available in the public domain, open source finite element program FEBio (http:∕∕mrl.sci.utah.edu∕software).  相似文献

A finite element analysis is used to study a previously unresolved issue of the effects of platen-specimen friction on the response of the unconfined compression test; effects of platen permeability are also determined. The finite element formulation is based on the linear KLM biphasic model for articular cartilage and other hydrated soft tissues. A Galerkin weighted residual method is applied to both the solid phase and the fluid phase, and the continuity equation for the intrinsically incompressible binary mixture is introduced via a penalty method. The solid phase displacements and fluid phase velocities are interpolated for each element in terms of unknown nodal values, producing a system of first order differential equations which are solved using a standard numerical finite difference technique. An axisymmetric element of quadrilateral cross-section is developed and applied to the mechanical test problem of a cylindrical specimen of soft tissue in unconfined compression. These studies show that interfacial friction plays a major role in the unconfined compression response of articular cartilage specimens with small thickness to diameter ratios.  相似文献

The compliance of the vessel wall affects hemodynamic parameters which may alter the permeability of the vessel wall. Based on experimental measurements, the present study established a finite element (FE) model in the proximal elastic vessel segments of epicardial right coronary arterial (RCA) tree obtained from computed tomography. The motion of elastic vessel wall was measured by an impedance catheter and the inlet boundary condition was measured by an ultrasound flow probe. The Galerkin FE method was used to solve the Navier–Stokes and Continuity equations, where the convective term in the Navier–Stokes equation was changed in the arbitrary Lagrangian–Eulerian (ALE) framework to incorporate the motion due to vessel compliance. Various hemodynamic parameters (e.g., wall shear stress—WSS, WSS spatial gradient—WSSG, oscillatory shear index—OSI) were analyzed in the model. The motion due to vessel compliance affects the time-averaged WSSG more strongly than WSS at bifurcations. The decrease of WSSG at flow divider in elastic bifurcations, as compared to rigid bifurcations, implies that the vessel compliance decreases the permeability of vessel wall and may be atheroprotective. The model can be used to predict coronary flow pattern in subject-specific anatomy as determined by noninvasive imaging.  相似文献

An extended exposure to repeated loading on fingertip has been associated to many vascular, sensorineural, and musculoskeletal disorders in the fingers, such as carpal tunnel syndrome, hand-arm vibration syndrome, and flexor tenosynovitis. A better understanding of the pathomechanics of these sensorineural and vascular diseases in fingers requires a formulation of a biomechanical model of the fingertips and analyses to predict the mechanical responses of the soft tissues to dynamic loading. In the present study, a model based on finite element techniques has been developed to simulate the mechanical responses of the fingertips to dynamic loading. The proposed model is two-dimensional and incorporates the essential anatomical structures of a finger: skin, subcutaneous tissue, bone, and nail. The skin tissue is assumed to be hyperelastic and viscoelastic. The subcutaneous tissue was considered to be a nonlinear, biphasic material composed of a hyperelastic solid and an invicid fluid, while its hydraulic permeability was considered to be deformation dependent. Two series of numerical tests were performed using the proposed finger tip model to: (a) simulate the responses of the fingertip to repeated loading, where the contact plate was assumed to be fixed, and the bone within the fingertip was subjected to a prescribed sinusoidal displacement in vertical direction; (b) simulate the force response of the fingertip in a single keystroke, where the keyboard was composed of a hard plastic keycap, a rigid support block, and a nonlinear spring. The time-dependent behavior of the fingertip under dynamic loading was derived. The model predictions of the time-histories of force response of the fingertip and the phenomenon of fingertip separation from the contacting plate during cyclic loading agree well with the reported experimental observations.  相似文献

Understanding cardiac blood flow patterns has many applications in analysing haemodynamics and for the clinical assessment of heart function. In this study, numerical simulations of blood flow in a patient-specific anatomical model of the left ventricle (LV) and the aortic sinus are presented. The realistic 3D geometry of both LV and aortic sinus is extracted from the processing of magnetic resonance imaging (MRI). Furthermore, motion of inner walls of LV and aortic sinus is obtained from cine-MR image analysis and is used as a constraint to a numerical computational fluid dynamics (CFD) model based on the moving boundary approach. Arbitrary Lagrangian–Eulerian finite element method formulation is used for the numerical solution of the transient dynamic equations of the fluid domain. Simulation results include detailed flow characteristics such as velocity, pressure and wall shear stress for the whole domain. The aortic outflow is compared with data obtained by phase-contrast MRI. Good agreement was found between simulation results and these measurements.  相似文献

Two models of optimal branching structure of the vascular tree are compared. Murray’s minimum work model derived from minimum energy loss due to flow and volume in the duct system is proved to be included as a mathematical group in the authors’ model defined by the minimum volume under determinant pressure, flow and position at the terminals. The problem about heterotypical trees which are identical at the terminal conditions but different in the topological order of branch combinations are discussed, applying the results of analyses on the equivalent duct of uniform terminal pressure trees. It is proved that the minimum work tree has the least energy loss compared with its heterotypical minimum volume trees and is a better model of branching structure of the vascular tree.  相似文献

In this paper, spatial velocity distributions in pulse-wave propagation based on a fluid–structure interaction model are presented. The investigation is performed using the assumption of laminar flow and a linear-elastic wall. The fluid–structure interaction scheme is constructed using the finite element method. The results show that velocity distributions embody an obvious time delay in an elastic tube model. Further, the fully developed flow is delayed and the velocity values are increased in comparison with a rigid tube model. The increase in the wall thickness makes the time delay between the velocity peaks of different sites smaller while the time delay between the velocity minima is unchanged. Similarly, the time delay between the velocity bottoms is more easily found when decreasing the internal radius. The model gives valid results for spatial velocity distributions, which provide important information for wave propagation.  相似文献

An axisymmetric deformation of a viscoelastic sphere bounded by a prestressed elastic thin shell in response to external pressure is studied by a finite element method. The research is motivated by the need for understanding the passive behavior of human leukocytes (white blood cells) and interpreting extensive experimental data in terms of the mechanical properties. The cell at rest is modeled as a sphere consisting of a cortical prestressed shell with incompressible Maxwell fluid interior. A large-strain deformation theory is developed based on the proposed model. General non-linear, large strain constitutive relations for the cortical shell are derived by neglecting the bending stiffness. A representation of the constitutive equations in the form of an integral of strain history for the incompressible Maxwell interior is used in the formulation of numerical scheme. A finite element program is developed, in which a sliding boundary condition is imposed on all contact surfaces. The mathematical model developed is applied to evaluate experimental data of pipette tests and observations of blood flow.  相似文献
