Wild, habituated, Japanese monkeys were observed from 1975 to 1979 on Yakushima Island, Southern Japan. The monkey troops had a continuous distribution in a warm temperate forest. Demographic data on local populations was collected. The population density was 33 animals/km2. The growth rate of the studied troop was 3.0% per year. A significant correlation between home range areas (R) and troop size (P) was found (r=0.955,p<0.005), using anR-P equation,R=1.84P. One troop split into three troops through two successive fissions. Twenty-one intertroop encounters were observed. Five types of encounters were distinguished. The encounters were apparently territorial defence. Increases in birth rate and socionomic sex ratio after the fissions were prominent. The following four factors had a direct effect upon the dispersion of the troops after fission: (1) dominance relation between the fission troops; (2) social pressure of the neighbors; (3) troop's attachment to its home range; and (4) structure of the environment. The home range of Japanese monkeys is a territory, and territoriality is a population regulating mechanism which serves to reduce competition for food.  相似文献

Since 1962 clinical examinations have been performed on all 466 Japanese monkeys from the troops of the western part of Japan.During the external inspection we found a few cases of malformation of the hand and foot in some troops, but except for these they were in good physical condition, negative in tuberculin test and in Shigella and Salmonella infection.In all troops a high rate of helminthic infection was detected and there was a difference in the rate of occurrence of certain helminths betweenMacaca fuscata fuscata andM. fuscata yakui. No single case with the antibody to the B Virus was encountered, and it seems that no infection of the B Virus is present among the Japanese monkey.The free-ranging condition under which the Japanese monkey inhabits in troops seems to be satisfactory and they seem to have no serious problem of any kind at present.  相似文献

Howler monkey troops were censused at the biological reserve “Los Tuxtlas” in Veracruz, Mexico. The reserve includes 700 ha of rain forest. Twenty howler monkeys were also trapped, measured, marked, and released. Censuses were conducted for a period of 26 months, and they indicated the existence of 17 troops. The mean troop size was 9.12 (SD ± 2.93), and mean troop composition was 3.0 adult males, 4.12 females, 1.56 juveniles, and 1.54 infants. Ecological density was 0.23 howlers/ha or 23.29 howlers/km2. The male to female ratio was 1:1.37. No discrete seasonality in births was noted. Howler monkeys in this locality inhabit the northernmost limit of the neotropical rain forest. The population parameters fall within those reported for Alouatta palliata at other sites.  相似文献

A survey of the population of the black howler monkey (Alouatta pigra) present at the Mayan site of Palenque was conducted during 2000. A total of 911 man/hours, spread over 112 days were spent surveying the 600 ha area of pristine forest at the site for howler troops. We detected the presence of 136 individuals of which 131 were members of 20 troops, the rest were 3 solitary adult males and 2 adult males travelling as a pair. Ecological density was estimated at 23 individuals/km2. Mean troop size was 7.0 individuals and it ranged from 2–12 individuals; 60% of the troops were multimale. All sighting of howler monkeys were in evergreen rain forest and 75% were in trees ≥20 m in height. The reported densities and mean troop size are higher than those reported for the species in Guatemala and in central Quintana Roo, Mexico. The vegetation of the forest contains tree species reported to be used by species ofAlouatta in the Moraceae, Sapotaceae, Leguminosae, and Lauraceae plant families. Protection of a large perimeter area (ca 1700 ha) around the archeological site by the Mexican government ensures the conservation of the forest and of the black howler monkey population present at the site.  相似文献

Length and mass data for 1260 (536 females, 683 males, 41 sex unknown) striped marlin Kajikia audax were collected at the fish markets of Tungkang, Singkang and Nanfangao from July 2004 to September 2010. Of these samples, 534 gonads (236 females and 298 males) ranging from 95 to 206 cm in eye‐to‐fork length (L EF ) and 8 to 88 kg in round mass (M R), were collected. Chi‐square tests indicated sex ratios were homogeneous among months in 2004 and 2006–2008, but not in 2005, 2009 and 2010; and there were significant differences in sex ratio by size. The overall sex ratio (R S ) differed significantly from the expected 0·5. Kajikia audax are sexually dimorphic and the proportions of females increased with size between 140 and 210 cm L EF . Reproductive activity was assessed using a gonado‐somatic index (I G ), external appearance of the gonads and histological examination and results indicated that the spawning season occurred from April to August with a peak in June to July. Based on histological observations and the distribution of oocyte diameters, K. audax are multiple spawners and their oocytes develop asynchronously. The estimated length‐at‐50% maturity (L EF50 ) was c . 181 cm (c . 4·8 years of age) for females. The proportion of reproductively active females in the spawning season with ovaries containing postovulatory follicles (0·27) indicated that they spawned every 3·7 days on average. The hydrated oocyte method estimated mean ± S.D. batch fecundity (F B ) to be 4·4 ± 2·02 million eggs; average relative fecundity was 53·6 ± 13·9 oocytes g?1 M R; and the average annual fecundity was 181·3 ± 48·3 million eggs. The parameters estimated in this study are key information for stock assessments of K. audax in the north‐western and central Pacific and will contribute to the conservation, management and sustainable yield of this species.  相似文献

This study clarifies the location, size and age at the onset of metamorphosis in Japanese eels Anguilla japonica through oceanic surveys, rearing experiments and analyses of the morphology and otoliths of leptocephali and glass eels. Twenty‐eight metamorphosing leptocephali were collected in the mesoscale eddy region to the east of Taiwan during research expeditions in 2004. Rearing experiments showed that the total length (LT) of leptocephali decreased by an average of 12·5% during metamorphosis and 13·9% during the 2–12 h after death. Thus, the mean back‐calculated LT at the onset of metamorphosis for 630 glass eels from Taiwan and Japan was estimated at 67·8 ± 2·7 mm (mean ± S.D.). The estimated mean ante‐mortem size of the fully grown pre‐metamorphic leptocephali collected in 2004 was 64·6 ± 3·4 mm, which was consistent with the LT estimate for glass eels. Otolith analysis showed that the mean age at the onset of metamorphosis was 137 ± 15 days and indicated that Japanese eels may have a recruitment route through the mesoscale eddies to the east of Taiwan in addition to the direct transfer route from the North Equatorial Current to the Kuroshio Current.  相似文献

植物化石气孔参数分析是目前恢复古大气二氧化碳浓度较为精准的方法之一,银杏类和松柏类等是恢复古大气CO_2浓度常用的化石类群。本文利用新疆准噶尔盆地下侏罗统三工河组的松柏类掌鳞杉科Brachyphyllum(Hirmeriella?)sp.化石对早侏罗世大气CO_2浓度进行了重建,获得早侏罗世大气CO_2浓度为~1200ppm,丰富了早侏罗世大气CO_2浓度信息,进一步说明掌鳞杉科植物通过气孔比率法在重建侏罗纪大气CO_2浓度方面的可靠性。掌鳞杉科植物的旱生构造和较高的大气CO_2浓度表明早侏罗世Toarcian期大洋缺氧事件在陆地生态系统内可能产生了一定的响应。  相似文献

The relationship between social structure and partitioning of genetic variance was examined in two red howler monkey populations (W and G) in Venezuela, one of which (G) was undergoing rapid growth through colonization by new troops. Rates and patterns of gene flow had been determined through radiotelemetry and direct observation data on solitary migrants, and 10 years of troop censusing. Standard electrophoresis techniques were used to examine 29 loci in blood samples taken from 137 of the study animals. Analysis of genetic variance demonstrated: (1) a significantly high level of genetic variation among troops within populations (FST = 0.225 for W and 0.142 for G), and (2) a significant excess of heterozygosity within troops relative to expected (FIS = -0.136 for W and -0.064 for G), despite relatively high levels of observed and inferred inbreeding in W. Differences between the populations in FST values conformed to those predicted based on differences in colonization rate. Comparison of partitioning of genetic variance among different genealogical subsets of troops demonstrated that the pattern of genetic differentiation observed among troops within populations was promoted by an essentially single-male harem breeding structure, a very low rate of random exchange of breeding males among troops, and a high degree of relatedness among troop females. Between-troop genetic differentiation (FST) was thereby increased relative to that expected from other types of social organization, while the correlation between uniting gametes within troops (FIS) was decreased. Genetic differentiation between populations (2%) corresponded to that predicted from migration rates. Such a mosaic of genetic variation, combined with differences in reproductive success observed among troops and a high troop failure rate, create conditions in which interdemic selection could result in more rapid spread of advantageous gene combinations than would be expected in a panmictic population, particularly in a colonizing situation in which the founder population is small.  相似文献

Between the rainy season months of July and November 1976, the author censused and intensively studied for 50 hr the capped langur,Presbytis pileatus, in the Madhupur Forest, Bangladesh. Transects were made in the forest to provide tree girth and height measurements. The predominant tree species is sal,Shorea robusta. The mean group size for capped langur troops observed in excess of 1 hr was 8.7, and that for troops censused for less than 1 hr, 7.5. Troops were primarily unimale, but one all-male band of four and a solitary adult male were sighted. The adult sex ratio of females to males was 2:1. The equivalent ecological density for intensively studied troops was 92 individuals/km2. Estimated ecological biomass was equal to 716.5 kg/km2. A daily activity profile shows that the capped langur has a bimodal feeding schedule. Midday is clearly a rest period. Adult males spend much time in sentinel behavior and an unusual penile display is described. Instances of intergroup antagonism are detailed. Fighting was observed on one occasion. Vocalizations are described by context of emission.  相似文献

In order to estimate the genetically effective troop size of Japanese monkeys, we have to know the pattern of distribution of the numbers of gametes contributed by the individual members of the parental population to the next generation. The author inspected the observation records of macaque troops made by a number of socio-ecologists and found that the relationship between sexual rank and sexual activity of adult males could be approximately expressed by the law of geometrical series. Assuming that the genetic contribution of male parents to the next generation was proportional to their sexual activity and that the numbers of gametes contributed by the female parents formed thePoisson distribution, the author derived a formula for estimating effective troop size (N), namely, whereN c was the census number andN m andN f the numbers of male and female parents, respectively, of the troop. Moreover, assumingN m =0.2N c andN f =0.3N c as an average, the effective size could be estimated as 36% or less of the census number.  相似文献

Intertroop relationships among Japanese monkeys, which have been paid only scant attention for the past 20 years, are examined from several points of view. Japanese monkey troops are generally distributed in such a way as to concentrate locally, that is, to form a local concentration of troops (LCT). About 20% of the nomadic ranges of the troops within LCT's overlap; but in their natural state, they seldom approach but rather to avoid one another. From observations of intertroop encounters at Takasakiyama, where three troops are provisionized and use the same feeding place, it has been found that there exists a dominant-subordinate relationship among troops, that monkeys of each troop have a clear consciousness of belonging to their troop, and that monkeys of different troops rate one another on the basis of their capability. The frequency of male transfer between troops within LCT's is by far higher than between LCT's. In Japanese monkey society, a troop only is a social unit and a social order higher than a troop is not seen; however, it is not impossible to consider an LCT a consanguineally connected group by reason of the transfer of males among the troops within it.  相似文献

Abstract: The kinetics of transport across the blood-brain barrier and metabolism in brain (hemisphere) of [14C]2-fluoro-2-deoxy-d -glucose (FDG) were compared to that of [3H]2-deoxy-d -glucose (DG) and d -glucose in the pentobarbital-anesthetized adult rat. Saturation kinetics of transport were measured with the brain uptake index (BUI) method. The BUI for FDG was 54.3 ± 5.6. Nonlinear regression analysis gave a Km of 6.9 ± 1.1 mM and a Vmax of 1.70 ± 0.32 μmol/min/g. The K1 for glucose inhibition of FDG transport was 10.7 ± 4.4 mM. The kinetic constants of influx (k1) and efflux (K2) for FDG were calculated from the Km, Vmax, and glucose concentrations of the hemisphere and plasma (2.3 ± 0.2 μmol/g and 9.9 ± 0.4 mM, respectively). The transport coefficient (k1 FDG/k1glucose) was 1.67 ± 0.07 and the phosphorylation constant was 0.55 ± 0.16. The predicted lumped constant for FDG was 0.89, whereas the measured hexose utilization index for FDG was 0.85 ± 0.16. Conclusion: The value for the lumped constant can be predicted on the basis of the known kinetic constants of FDG and glucose transport and metabolism, as well as brain and plasma glucose levels. Knowledge of the lumped constant is crucial in interpreting data obtained from 18FDG analysis of regional glucose utilization in human brain in pathological states. We propose that the lumped constant will rise to a maximum equal to the transport coefficient for FDG under conditions of transport limitation (hypoglycemia) or elevated glycolysis (ischemia, seizures), and will fall to a minimum equal to the phosphorylation coefficient during phosphorylation limitation (extreme hyperglycemia).  相似文献

The production of dicentric chromosomes in human lymphocytes by high-energy neutron radiation was studied using a quasi-monoenergetic 60 MeV neutron beam. The average yield coefficient of the linear dose–response relationship for dicentric chromosomes was measured to be (0.146±0.016) Gy−1. This confirms our earlier observations that above 400 keV, the yield of dicentric chromosomes decreases with increasing neutron energy. Using the linear-quadratic dose–response relationship for dicentric chromosomes established in blood of the same donor for 60Co γ-rays as a reference radiation, an average maximum low-dose RBE (RBEM) of 14±4 for 60 MeV quasi-monoenergetic neutrons with a dose-weighted average energy of 41.0 MeV is obtained. A correction procedure was applied, to account for the low-energy continuum of the quasi-monoenergetic spectral neutron distribution, and the yield coefficient α for 60 MeV neutrons was determined from the measured average yield coefficient . For α, a value of (0.115±0.026) Gy−1 was obtained corresponding to an RBEM of 11±4. The present experiments extend earlier investigations with monoenergetic neutrons to higher energies.  相似文献

The troop fission of Japanese monkeys has been observed in 11 troops, and the total number of fissions observed numbered 22. Examined cases of fission relative to season, amount of food, troop size and socionomic sex ratio of the main troop and to individuals that acted as nucleus in forming a branch troop and females, exhibited variance, not being uniform. But inquiry into troop fission as seen from the standpoint of the mechanism maintained by Japanese monkeys' society indicated (1) troop fission checks the growth of troop size and increases the socionomic sex ratio of the main troop, (2) troop fission is an effective mechanism for the maintenance of class structure among adult males, and (3) the possibility that troop fission functions to check inbreeding.Thus, it must be said in general that troop fission, along with single desertions of males, plays a very important role as one mechanism for the maintenance of the society of Japanese monkey. However, the branch troop is often composed of a large number of males and a small number of females; in short, it is under very difficult conditions that a branch troop starts on its way to becoming a fully established Japanese monkey troop.The troop fission is an effective mechanism for the maintenance of the main troop, but not too effective for that of the branch troop.It cannot be said that there are abundant data on troop fission of primates other than Japanese monkey. But, from limited data, we can find various forms of troop fission according to each species, and it may be ultimately related to the maintenance mechanism of the primate society.  相似文献

We have previously demonstrated that estradiol-17β (E2) administered in vivo induces atresia of the dominant ovarian follicle (DF). Whether this effect is exerted directly at the ovarian level or by central mediation has not been confirmed. The present study was designed to assess whether E2 in amounts similar to those found in monkey follicular fluid (FF) directly alters in vitro progesterone (P) accumulation by granulosa cells (GC) aspirated from follicles in cycling rhesus monkeys. Follicular contents were aspirated from three to five animals on each of days 8–13 of the cycle. GC were plated at a density of 50,000 viable GC/0.5 ml medium; GC were incubated with 0 or 2–2,000 ng/ml E2, and cultures were maintained for 72 h. P accumulation by GC collected on day 8 and treated with 2 ng/ml E2 was augmented 37.5 ± 5.5% (X ± S. E. M.; P<.05) over controls but was diminished significantly at 20 ng/ml ( ?55 ± 18% with respect to controls), 200 ng/ml ( ?73.7 ± 13.2%), and 2,000 ng/ml ( ?77.3 ± 18.4%). A similar dose-response relationship was noted on other cycle days. At a concentration of 2,000 ng/ml, E2 significantly reduced P 91.5 ± 8.5% (day 10), 81.5 ± 18.5% (day 11), 84.3 ± 4.7% (day 12), and 53.7 ± 15.8% (day 13). We conclude that E2 at concentrations found in FF can inhibit P output by monkey GC through a direct action.  相似文献

The circulating blood volume has been measured in 65 healthy Japanese monkeys (Macaca fuscata) with the dye T-1824 (Evans blue). The values obtained were 83 ± 13 ml/kg in females, and 85 ± 12 ml/kg in females, almost the same as the figures reported in man.Sex difference of blood volume has been reported to be present in man, but from the data obtained here no significant difference was found in the Japanese monkey.In young monkeys aged from 1 to 5.5 years, the blood volume was 77 ± 5 ml/kg in males, and 78 ± 4 ml/kg in females. The blood volume of the monkey was found to increase with age; a significant difference was demonstrated between adult males and young males.  相似文献

Changes in land surface albedo can alter ecosystem energy balance and potentially influence climate. We examined the albedo of six bioenergy cropping systems in southwest Michigan USA: monocultures of energy sorghum (Sorghum bicolor), switchgrass (Panicum virgatum L.), and giant miscanthus (Miscanthus × giganteus), and polycultures of native grasses, early successional vegetation, and restored prairie. Direct field measurements of surface albedo (αs) from May 2018 through December 2020 at half-hourly intervals in each system quantified the magnitudes and seasonal differences in albedo (∆α) and albedo-induced radiative forcing (RFα). We used a nearby forest as a historical native cover type to estimate reference albedo and RFα change upon original land use conversion, and a continuous no-till maize (Zea mays L.) system as a contemporary reference to estimate change upon conversion from annual row crops. Annually, αs differed significantly (p < 0.05) among crops in the order: early successional (0.288 ± 0.012SE) >> miscanthus (0.271 ± 0.009) ≈ energy sorghum (0.270 ± 0.010) ≥ switchgrass (0.265 ± 0.009) ≈ restored prairie (0.264 ± 0.012) > native grasses (0.259 ± 0.010) > maize (0.247 ± 0.010). Reference forest had the lowest annual αs (0.134 ± 0.003). Albedo differences among crops during the growing season were also statistically significant, with growing season αs in perennial crops and energy sorghum on average ~20% higher (0.206 ± 0.003) than in no-till maize (0.184 ± 0.002). Average non-growing season (NGS) αs (0.370 ± 0.020) was much higher than growing season αs (0.203 ± 0.003) but these NGS differences were not significant. Overall, the original conversion of reference forest and maize landscapes to perennials provided a cooling effect on the local climate (RFαMAIZE: −3.83 ± 1.00 W m−2; RFαFOREST: −16.75 ± 3.01 W m−2). Significant differences among cropping systems suggest an additional management intervention for maximizing the positive climate benefit of bioenergy crops, with cellulosic crops on average ~9.1% more reflective than no-till maize, which itself was about twice as reflective as the reference forest.  相似文献

We investigated the density and size structure of the endangered Knysna seahorse Hippocampus capensis in the macroalga Codium tenue at three sites in a residential marina estate in the Knysna Estuary, South Africa, over an 18 month period from March 2017 to August 2018. Seahorses were present in C. tenue throughout the year. Average (± SE) densities of 0.33 (± 0.03) and 0.23 (± 0.03) seahorses per kg of C. tenue were found for 2017 and 2018 respectively. Density did not vary across sites but varied significantly across months with a decreasing trend from summer to spring. The average (± SE) adult seahorse height was 75.16 mm (± 0.63 mm) and 69.09 mm (± 0.64 mm) and mass was 2.05 g (± 0.04 g) and 1.65 g (± 0.04 g) for males and females, respectively, and an even sex ratio was observed throughout the sampling period. Height varied across months, with significantly smaller seahorses found in June and August of 2017. Tail length was highly correlated with height and therefore can serve as a potential proxy for determining the height of H. capensis. This study showed that C. tenue is consistently utilised by Knysna seahorse and should therefore be considered an important habitat to protect and facilitate the ongoing conservation of this endangered seahorse species.  相似文献

Laparoscopic observations of ovaries before and after ovulation were made in 74 cycles in 39 Japanese monkeys (Macaca fuscata). Lengths of menstrual cycles, the follicular phase and the luteal phase in these animals were 25.3±2.8 days, 13.2±1.4 days, and 12.8±2.3 days, respectively. Ovarian morphology during the menstrual cycle in the Japanese monkey agreed in some features and disagreed in others, with findings inMacaca mulatta andMacaca fascicularis reported in the previous papers using laparotomy or laparoscopy. Follicular appearance before and after ovulation varied so considerably from ovary to ovary that it was hard to predict the accurate ovulation time or to estimate the precise age of corpus luteum by means of observations on the morphological appearance only. However, diagnosis of whether ovulation had already occurred or not, was possible when careful observations were made, although some ovaries without haemorrhagic and luteinized appearance after ovulation were very similar to pre-ovulatory follicle. Clear luteinization was detected without fail in many cases three days after ovulation. 为明确油棕鲜果穗产量构成因素之间的关系,利用相关性、回归和通径等分析方法,对58株油棕单株鲜果穗产量与其它性状相关性进行了研究。结果表明:油棕鲜果穗产量与鲜果穗重和每株果穗数的相关性最为密切。另外,在油棕高产品种选育过程中,应着重对平均果穗重、每株果穗数、果实大小和含油量等性状进行选择,并综合权衡这些产量性状之间的相互作用。产量性状变异和相关性分析表明,平均种壳厚度变异程度最大(88.34%),平均果长变异最小(11.99%),鲜果穗产量与鲜果穗重、每株果穗数、平均果重呈极显著正相关关系(0.882**,0.714**,0.439**),与平均果长呈显著正相关关系(0.334*)。多元线性回归和通径分析结果表明,通过比较多元线性回归方程的相关参数,建立了可实用的最优多元线性回归方程x_1=-281.511+2.787x_4+3.455x_5-2.672x_6+0.411x_7+6.690x_8+3.664x_9,平均鲜果穗重和每株果穗数对单株鲜果穗产量的直接作用最大(0.670,0.439),其它性状对单株产量的直接作用较小,平均果重和平均果长对单株鲜果穗产量的间接作用最大(0.335,0.322)。该研究结果为油棕高产品种选育提供了依据。  相似文献
