Coccidioidin sensitivity in San Diego schools   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
A Catanzaro 《Sabouraudia》1979,17(2):85-89
San Diego is located within the geographic distribution of known occurrence of Coccidioides immitis contamination of the soil. Forty-five to fifty-five cases are diagnosed in San Diego hospitals each year. Skin tests were administered to one thousand and twenty-seven ninth grade students in five selected San Diego schools. Coccidioidin 1:100 was administered by Mantoux technique, intradermally. Induration was measured at forty-eight hours. Greater than 5 mm of induration was noted in 9.7% of students tested. Among 378 students who had been lifelong residents of San Diego County, 7% had greater than 5 mm of induration. Coccidioidomycosis is endemic in San Diego but the level of endemicity is rather modest.  相似文献

Africanized honey bees entered California in 1994 but few accounts of their northward expansion or their frequency relative to European honey bees have been published. We used mitochondrial markers and morphometric analyses to determine the prevalence of Africanized honeybees in San Diego County and their current northward progress in California west of the Sierra Nevada crest. The northernmost African mitotypes detected were approximately 40 km south of Sacramento in California’s central valley. In San Diego County, 65% of foraging honey bee workers carry African mitochondria and the estimated percentage of Africanized workers using morphological measurements is similar (61%). There was no correlation between mitotype and morphology in San Diego County suggesting Africanized bees result from bidirectional hybridization. Seventy percent of feral hives, but only 13% of managed hives, sampled in San Diego County carried the African mitotype indicating that a large fraction of foraging workers in both urban and rural San Diego County are feral. We also found a single nucleotide polymorphism at the DNA barcode locus COI that distinguishes European and African mitotypes. The utility of this marker was confirmed using 401 georeferenced honey bee sequences from the worldwide Barcode of Life Database. Future censuses can determine whether the current range of the Africanized form is stable, patterns of introgression at nuclear loci, and the environmental factors that may limit the northern range of the Africanized honey bee.  相似文献

Orgel L 《Current biology : CB》2004,14(9):R331-R332
Leslie Orgel is a Professor and Senior Fellow at the Salk Institute in La Jolla, California, and an Adjunct Professor at the University of California at San Diego. The first part of his career was devoted to the theoretical inorganic chemistry of transition metal ions. This led to the publication of a book on Ligand-Field Theory. Since 1964, he has concentrated on aqueous solution chemistry that might be relevant to the origin of life. He has authored or co-authored two books on the origin of life.  相似文献

About two years ago, on a cool Southern California day, Vasili Davydov addressed a group of social scientists at the University of California, San Diego. He began his talk with a paradox. He had come, he said, to tell us about educational activity. He promised to exhibit principles that promote educational activity, and applied programs deriving from those principles. Then he laughed. "But you'll never see educational activity in the school," he said, and laughed again.  相似文献

Rodents use their whiskers to explore their environment and to make very fine discriminations in textures and sizes of objects. Exploratory “whisking” movements consist of large amplitude, rhythmic whisker protractions that occur at characteristic frequencies of 5–10?Hz. Rodents likely whisk to move their receptor surface over the object they are touching. A fundamental understanding of this important motor behavior and the sensorimotor loops that control it were the focus of the final session of the Barrels Workshop. This session began with talks from David Kleinfeld (University of California San Diego), Miguel Nicolelis (Duke University), and Jonathan Rubin (University of Pittsburgh). These talks were followed by short presentations from Steven Leiser (Drexel University), Marcin Szwed (Weitzman Institute), Ford Ebner (Vanderbilt University), Charles Pluto (Medical College of Ohio), and Elisabeth Foeller (Washington University).  相似文献

[(sup14)C]naphthalene and phenanthrene were oxidized to (sup14)CO(inf2) without a detectable lag under strict anaerobic conditions in sediments from San Diego Bay, San Diego, Calif., that were heavily contaminated with polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) but not in less contaminated sediments. Sulfate reduction was necessary for PAH oxidation. These results suggest that the self-purification capacity of PAH-contaminated sulfate-reducing environments may be greater than previously recognized.  相似文献

Escherichia coli was grown under various culture conditions. Variations in the levels of formate dehydrogenase which reacts with methylene blue (MB) or phenazine methosulfate (PMS) (N enzyme), formate dehydrogenase which reacts with benzyl viologen (BV) (H enzyme), formate oxidase and hydrogenlyase were analyzed. It was observed that formate dehydrogenase N and formate oxidase were induced by nitrate and repressed by oxygen. Synthesis of formate dehydrogenase H and hydrogenlyase was induced by formate and repressed by nitrate and oxygen. Selenite was required for the biosynthesis of formate dehydrogenase H and hydrogenlyase. Activity of both formate oxidase and hydrogenlyase was inhibited by azide and KCN but not by N-heptyl hydroxyquinoline-N-oxide (HOQNO); on the other hand, formate oxidase was extremely sensitive to HOQNO. Data were obtained which suggest that cytochromes are not involved in hydrogen formation from formate. Part of this work was carried out when the senior author was visiting Research Biologist in the Laboratory of Dr. J. A. de Mosss at the University of California, San Diego. Thanks are given to Dr. De Moss for his hospitality and advise and to Dr. Warren Butler of the University of California, San Diego for making available his spectrophotometer to carry out cytochrome analyses. Most of this work was sustained by a grant from the Research Corporation, Brown Hazen Fund and the financial help of the C.O.F.A.A. from the Instituto Politécnico Nacional.  相似文献

The alpha 1 beta 1 interface of normal and mutated San Diego hemoglobins in their fully liganded form was investigated, through the SH vibrational absorption of beta-112 cysteine, by Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy. The center frequency of this thiol group was significantly shifted in San Diego hemoglobin compared with normal human hemoglobin. Different dimer organization between the two proteins was also revealed by circular dichroism of the heme. These findings agree well with assessment that the alpha 1 beta 1 interface, far from being inert, is involved in the affinity changes of the hemoglobin molecule.  相似文献

The 26th annual Barrels meeting was convened on the campus of the University of California San Diego, not far from the shores of the Pacific Ocean. The meeting focused on three main themes: the structure and function of the thalamic reticular nucleus, the neurovasculature system and its role in brain metabolism, and the origins and functions of cortical GABAergic interneurons. In addition to the major themes, there were short talks, a data blitz, and a poster session which highlighted the diversity and quality of the research ongoing in the rodent whisker-to-barrel system.  相似文献
