Previous studies of feeding rhythms in post-smolt Atlantic salmon Salmo salar have produced variable results. Therefore, the present study was performed to clarify the source of these differences and to examine size-related variation in daily feeding patterns. A small group of hatchery reared post-smolts was kept in an indoor seawater tank under conditions of constant photoperiod and light intensity, and negligible diurnal variation in water temperature. Feeding responses were monitored by video camera throughout the day. The resultant feeding pattern for the population mirrored an earlier study, with the highest levels of feeding activity in the early morning and late evening. Differences between this and other studies may be due to variation in climate, season or life-history stage. Daily feeding patterns were size-dependent. The largest fish fed at a relatively constant level through the day, medium-sized fish fed in a pattern similar to that described above for the population and small fish fed most at first and last light. These differences were due probably to the effect of competitive interactions upon fish of different sizes.  相似文献

Synopsis The age structures of brook charr (Salvelinus fontinalis) and ouananiche (Salmo salar) stocks inhabiting a large rapid the river Méo, tributary to the Caniapiscau River were used to compare population stability and production of these species in north central Quebec. The brook chart stock was stable whereas ouananiche showed considerable variation in year class strength. Stock estimates were not significantly different for the two species although the brook charr estimate was 1.5 that of the ouananiche. Production estimates differed by a greater margin because of different growth patterns. Brook chair production was estimated at 19.4 kg ha−1 yr−1. Above age 2+ it was 11.4 kg ha−1 yr−1 which compares with 4.8 kg ha−1 yr−1 for the same age groups of ouananiche.  相似文献

The effects of genetic and environmental factors on aggression and feeding hierarchies were studied using X-radiography to measure food intake by hatchery-reared individuals of two strains (Hammerfest and Svalbard) of Arctic charr Salvelinus alpinus . A reduction in food rations and/or water current speed increased intraspecific aggression, and both factors led to increased interindividual variability in food intake, increasing the coefficient of variation (CV). Following a return to pre-manipulation conditions, CVs decreased to their original level. In control groups, CVs and share of group meals were stable throughout the experiment. The increase in CVs following manipulation was the result of a small number of dominant individuals obtaining a high share of the meal. Restriction in food ration affected share of meals, specific growth rates and the frequencies of non-feeding fish, while reductions in water current speed affected only share of meals. Feeding hierarchies were size-dependent in the control groups. In contrast, no relationships between body weight and feeding rank were evident in groups in which food ration or water current speed were reduced. A small, but consistent, difference was revealed in feeding hierarchy responses between the two strains.  相似文献

The olfactory systems of brook and brown trout were equally sensitive to prostaglandin F2a and its derivatives, suggesting that these species have similar sex pheromone systems. This may explain partially hybridization behaviour observed between these species.  相似文献

Variations in distributions and behaviours of Atlantic salmon Salmo salar in allopatry (homogeneous) and in sympatry with brown trout Salmo trutta (mixed) were observed before, during and after 2 day periods of dewatering in a large glass-sided indoor stream at densities typical of Scottish upland streams. Brown trout utilized pools more than Atlantic salmon at normal flows and in both species the majority of fishes moved into pools during dewatering. There was no significant effect of brown trout, which was the more dominant species, on the overall ability of Atlantic salmon to use pool habitat as a refuge during dewatering. Within mixed and homogeneous groups, average feeding levels decreased during dewatering. The highest ranking fish, which was always a brown trout in mixed groups, predominantly monopolized the pool and other individuals in pools adopted a more cryptic, stationary behaviour. Dewatering effectively increased local population density with the result that dominance status became much more important in maintaining food intake, and polarization between the top ranking fish and others increased. During the first day of dewatering, there was extreme behavioural polarization such that the dominant fish exhibited most aggression and least feeding within the group. Among dominant fish on the second day of dewatering, aggression had largely abated and feeding had returned to pretreatment levels despite the reduced average feeding within the group. The main difference between mixed and homogeneous groups was in the behaviour of the most dominant Atlantic salmon, which was near-despotic in allopatry and subordinate to brown trout in sympatry.  相似文献

The study tests two hypotheses: (1) the degree of shelter dominance in Atlantic salmon Salmo salar and brown trout Salmo trutta increases progressively with increasing size differential between heterospecific fish in a pair and (2) shelter dominance, standardized to size differential, correlates with aggression. The results support the first but not the second hypothesis, suggesting that the fitness consequences of high growth performance during the summer are likely to become evident during winter. At this time of year, when mortality is high among both Atlantic salmon and brown trout, shelter dominance may increase the chances of survival.  相似文献

Daily feeding patterns of tank-reared Atlantic salmon Salmo salar parr under ambient conditions and their relationship with patterns of aggression were investigated during spring and autumn. A single, early afternoon feeding peak was observed during spring but no consistent pattern emerged from the autumn trial (fish did tend to feed in synchrony, even though the population's feeding pattern varied between days). Aggression was highest at first light during both spring and autumn, reducing thereafter throughout the day. Feeding and aggression were out of phase during spring, with the level of feeding increasing as aggression decreased. It is suggested that the high levels of early morning aggression are associated with re-establishment of the social order that breaks down after a period of darkness; in the spring this may have inhibited feeding.  相似文献

Juvenile Atlantic salmon Salmo salar subjected to three weeks of cooler temperatures were 8·5% smaller than controls at the end of the temperature manipulation, but had caught up in size 20 weeks later. The behavioural means is examined by which this catch-up or compensatory growth is achieved. While on average compensating fish did not spend more time feeding, dominant fish within each group gained more exclusive access to the feeding area during periods of catch-up growth. Therefore the extent to which compensatory growth could be achieved was dependent on both the social status of the individual and the dominants' ability to monopolize the food patch.  相似文献

Polyandrous mating systems result in females mating with multiple males, generating opportunities for strong pre-mating and post-mating sexual selection. Polyandry also creates the potential for unintended matings and subsequent sperm competition with hybridizing species. Cryptic female choice allows females to bias paternity towards preferred males under sperm competition and may include conspecific sperm preference when under hybridization risk. The potential for hybridization becomes particularly important in context of invasive species that can novelly hybridize with natives, and by definition, have evolved allopatrically. We provide the first examination of conspecific sperm preference in a system of three species with the potential to hybridize: North American native Atlantic salmon (Salmo salar) and brook char (Salvelinus fontinalis), and invasive brown trout (Salmo trutta) from Europe. Using naturalized populations on the island of Newfoundland, we measured changes in sperm swimming performance, a known predictor of paternity, to determine the degree of modification in sperm swimming to female cues related to conspecific sperm preference. Compared to water alone, female ovarian fluid in general had a pronounced effect and changed sperm motility (by a mean of 53%) and swimming velocity (mean 30%), but not linearity (mean 6%). However, patterns in the degree of modification suggest there is no conspecific sperm preference in the North American populations. Furthermore, female cues from both native species tended to boost the sperm of invasive males more than their own. We conclude that cryptic female choice via ovarian fluid mediated sperm swimming modification is too weak in this system to prevent invasive hybridization and is likely insufficient to promote or maintain reproductive isolation between the native North American species.  相似文献

Dominance relationships between pairs of Atlantic salmon parr of known size were assessed at various times during their first year of life. In tests conducted between first feeding and early July, the larger of two fish was dominant in only 54% of pairs, regardless of the magnitude of the size difference between the fish. In September, there was a stronger association between size and status, especially in pairs with a large size differential, where the dominant was larger in 72% of cases. In groups of parr tested in April of the following year, there was no relationship between size and status, the larger of two fish being dominant in 48% of cases, regardless of the magnitude of the size differential. This result suggests that status in early social interactions may depend on behavioural properties rather than size and that the larger size of dominant fish reported in a number of salmonids might be a consequence and not a cause of high status.  相似文献

Sheltering behaviour of wild juvenile Atlantic salmon in an indoor stream was found to be density dependent; the proportion of fish sheltering decreased significantly with increasing population density. The mean number of fish occupying refugia was ≤1.5 fish per refuge even at very high densities (potentially 5 fish per shelter). These results suggest that shelter availability has potentially important consequences for the carrying capacity for natural populations of salmon in streams.  相似文献

The effect of varying the density of hatchery‐reared Atlantic salmon Salmo salar on the ability of single wild fish to occupy a shelter is assessed. Although there was strong density‐dependence on sheltering overall, the ability of wild Atlantic salmon parr to occupy a shelter was not affected by the presence of hatchery‐reared fish even when outnumbered by four to one. These findings illustrate a competitive asymmetry for shelter in favour of the wild fish at the densities tested.  相似文献

The brook charr (Salvelinus fontinalis; Osteichthyes: Salmonidae) is a phenotypically diverse fish species inhabiting much of North America. But relatively few genetic diagnostic resources are available for this fish species. We isolated 41 microsatellites from S. fontinalis polymorphic in one or more species of salmonid fish. Thirty‐seven were polymorphic in brook charr, 15 in the congener Arctic charr (Salvelinus alpinus) and 14 in the lake charr (Salvelinus namaycush). Polymorphism was also relatively high in Oncorhynchus, where 21 loci were polymorphic in rainbow trout (Oncorhynchus mykiss) and 16 in cutthroat trout (Oncorhynchus clarkii) but only seven and four microsatellite loci were polymorphic in the more distantly related lake whitefish (Coregonus clupeaformis) and Atlantic salmon (Salmo salar), respectively. One duplicated locus (Sfo228Lav) was polymorphic at both duplicates in S. fontinalis.  相似文献

Previous studies have suggested that the earliest fry to emerge from a salmonid redd may have an advantage in the subsequent competition for feeding sites, partly through a 'prior residence' effect. Here we examined whether there was any relationship between the relative date of first feeding and subsequent dominance status and growth in a sibling group of Atlantic salmon, Salmo salar L., fry. Earlier-feeding fry were dominant over their later-feeding siblings (controlling for prior residence), despite not being any larger. However, these early fish soon established and then maintained a size advantage. This led to an increased probability of early-feeding fish migrating to sea at age 1 year (rather than 2 or more). Thus a difference of less than 1 week in the relative timing of first feeding can translate into a year's difference in the timing of migration.  相似文献

Twelve groups of 10 Atlantic salmon Salmo salar parr were screened for dominance in small tanks with a single localized food source using a serial removal method and the top, middle and bottom two fish in each group were classified as high, medium and low social status, respectively. These 72 ranked fish were weighed and formed into four groups or waves, each consisting of six fish of each status category. The fish were given dye marks according to status and wave and were then introduced into an artificial stream in four waves over a 12-day period. Patterns of settlement/emigration were recorded over a 2-month period, at the end of which the fish were removed from the stream, identified and reweighed, and daily specific growth rates calculated. Fifty-one fish established feeding stations in the flume, the remainder emigrating via a downstream trap. The average growth rate over the 2-month period was 0·87% day−1. Probability of settlement and growth rates following settlement were significantly higher in fish from the earlier waves. In contrast, salmon that were dominant in the initial trial were less likely than subordinate fish to settle in the experimental stream and showed lower postsettlement growth rates. The possibility that fish have individually consistent behavioural profiles that promote success in different competitive environments is discussed with reference to published literature for other groups. A small-scale trial at the end of the main experiment confirmed the prior residence effect and demonstrated that 1 day was sufficient for such an effect to be evident.  相似文献

The feeding behaviour of juvenile Atlantic salmon Salmo salar in the Sainte‐Marguerite River, Quebec, Canada, varied with the characteristics of turbulent flow. Simulations indicated that juveniles would decrease their swimming costs during attacks by 19·8% in low and by 31·1% in high turbulent conditions by initiating movements in low‐speed flow events. The real swimming costs did not differ from the swimming costs estimated for a situation where fish initiate their movements at randomly selected flow velocities. The juvenile Atlantic salmon did not seem to prefer low‐speed flow events when initiating their movements. The proportion of time used for movements by fish decreased with an increase in the mean and the s . d . of the flow velocity.  相似文献

At low population densities, both hatchery- and wild-reared Atlantic salmon Salmo salar , which were progeny of a common genetic stock, occupied sub-gravel shelters alone. However, at high population densities, hatchery-reared fish occurred within shelters in significantly higher numbers than wild-reared fish. There was a significant effect of time after introduction to the experimental arenas on the proportion of hatchery-reared fish sheltering. These results show that rearing environment influences the behaviour of Atlantic salmon parr during winter and may also affect the carrying capacity of their environment.  相似文献

Migratory behaviour at spawning of wild and newly-escaped farmed Atlantic salmon was analysed by radio telemetry in the River Alta, North Norway. Spawning areas were located by aerial surveys. Farmed females moved significantly more than wild females ( P <0.01). There was no such difference between the two groups of males. About 83% of the wild fish stayed within identified spawning areas for 1 day or longer. The corresponding figure for farmed salmon was only 43% ( P <0.05). Wild salmon stayed 8.1 days inside spawning areas and farmed salmon 5.2 days. The present results suggest that escaped farmed salmon had reduced spawning success compared with wild fish.  相似文献

Radio tagged wild Atlantic salmon Salmo salar(n = 30) and sea trout Salmo trutta(n = 19) were simultaneously released from a sea pen outside the mouth of the River Lærdalselva and their migration to spawning areas was recorded. The distance from the river mouth to a position held at spawning ranged from 2 to 24 km and did not differ between the species (mean ± s .d . 15·9 ± 4·3 and 14·9 ± 5·2 km for Atlantic salmon and sea trout, respectively). The duration of the migration phase, however, was significantly shorter for Atlantic salmon than for sea trout (8–12 days, respectively). All Atlantic salmon migrated straight to an area near the spawning ground, whereas 50% of the sea trout had a stepwise progression with one or more periods with erratic movements before reaching the spawning area. After the migration phase, a distinct search phase with repeated movements up‐ and downstream at or close to the position held at spawning was identified for the majority of the fishes (75%, both species). This search phase was significantly shorter for Atlantic salmon than for sea trout (mean 13–31 days, respectively). Mean ± s .d . length of the river stretch used during the search phase was larger for sea trout (3·3 ± 2·5 km) than for Atlantic salmon (1·2 ± 0·9 km). A distinct holding phase, with no movements until spawning, was also observed in the majority of the Atlantic salmon (80%, mean duration 22 days) and sea trout (65%, mean duration 12 days). For both species, a weak, non‐significant trend was observed in the relationship between time spent on the migration phase, and time spent on the search (r2 = 0·43) and holding phase (r2 = 0·24). There was a highly significant decrease, however, in the duration of the holding phase with an increase in the time spent on the search phase (r2 = 0·67).  相似文献
