The development of unisexual flowers in maize and other plants proceeds through selective elimination of floral organs in an initially bisexual floral meristem. The essential character of the tasselseed 2 gene (TS2) in this cell-death pathway has been established previously. Molecular cloning of TS2 reveals membership to the evolutionarily conserved superfamily of short-chain dehydrogenases/reductases, but its substrate specificity remained unknown. Recombinant TS2 protein was produced in Escherichia coli, and purified to apparent homogeneity. Analytical ultracentrifugation and gel filtration experiments show that TS2 is a tetrameric enzyme. Thermal denaturation followed by circular dichroism spectroscopy reveals that TS2 binds NAD(H) and NAD(P)(H). Substrate screening demonstrates that TS2 converts steroids with specificities found at positions 3 and 17, and several dicarbonyl and quinone compounds, thus establishing TS2 as a plant 3beta/17beta-hydroxysteroid dehydrogenase and carbonyl/quinone reductase. Taken together, the genetic data and the substrate specificities determined suggest that TS2 converts specific plant compounds and acts as a prereceptor control mechanism, in a manner similar to that of mammalian hydroxysteroid dehydrogenases.  相似文献

We examined the geographic distributions and phylogenetic relationships of bisexual and unisexual (parthenogenetic) forms of the weevil Scepticus insularis on Hokkaido Island, northern Japan. Unisexual beetles were widespread throughout Hokkaido, whereas bisexuals were found only in three remote areas. Bisexuals (females and males) and unisexual females occurred sympatrically in two areas. We determined nucleotide sequences for part of the mitochondrial NADH dehydrogenase subunit 2 (ND2; 633 bp) gene for 104 individuals, and for part of the nuclear internal transcribed spacer region 2 (ITS2; 360 bp) for 91 individuals. In an ND2 gene tree, haplotypes of S. insularis fell into two distinct clades (A and B), which were genetically differentiated from one another by 9.1% nucleotide sequence divergence. Haplotypes of females identified as unisexual were all in clade A, whereas those of females identified as bisexual belonged to clade B. Haplotypes of males were in clade B, except for two males having a clade-A haplotype. Circumstantial evidence suggests that these two males were produced by unisexual females. The ND2 tree suggests that the current unisexual form of S. insularis on Hokkaido was of a single origin. In contrast, a gene tree for ITS2 haplotypes show no clear divergence between the two modes of reproduction, with two major haplotypes shared by unisexual females, bisexual females, and males. This incongruence between the nuclear and mitochondrial phylogenies may be attributable to occasional gene flow between the unisexual and bisexual lineages through males occasionally produced by unisexual females, but our results do not exclude the possibility that the two lineages share polymorphic ancestral ITS2 haplotypes.  相似文献

The allogamous raphid diatom Achnanthes longipes C. A. Agardh possesses a complex breeding system involving interactions between three types of clone: monoecious, unisexual and bisexual. Previous studies showed that these three types can be crossed with each other, with a tendency for sexual characteristics to be inherited: inbred monoecious lineages gave rise to monoecious or, very rarely, to bisexual clones, while inbred unisexual lineages yielded unisexual and bisexual clones. The current paper reports on the progeny of crosses between monoecious and unisexual clones and their inbred offspring. All three types of clone appeared in the F1 and F2, although unisexual clones of opposite sex to the parental clone were not found. Inbreeding depression was observed and also a tendency for ‘normal’ auxosporulation (producing two auxospores per pair of gametangia) to be replaced by ‘reduced’ or ‘intermediate’ auxosporulation (producing one auxospore per pair). In addition, patterns of incompatibility were observed that were not seen during earlier studies of clones isolated directly from nature. These included the inability of some F1 clones to mate with each other, in spite of compatibility with all other clones examined (unisexual, bisexual and monoecious).  相似文献

Interspecific hybridization is a well-established cause of unisexual origins in vertebrates. This mechanism is also suspected in other apomictic taxa, but compelling evidence is rare. Here, we evaluate this mechanism and other hypotheses for the evolutionary origins of unisexuality through an investigation of Calligrapha leaf beetles. This group provides an intriguing subject for studies of unisexual evolution because it presents a rare insect example of multiple apomictic thelytokous species within a primarily bisexual genus. To investigate unisexual evolution, this study conducts the first molecular systematic analysis of Calligrapha. This involved the collection and analysis of about 3000 bp of DNA sequences--representing RNA and protein-coding loci from mitochondrial and nuclear genomes--from 54 specimens of 25 Calligrapha species, including four unisexual tetraploid taxa. Phylogenetic and molecular clock analyses indicated independent and single evolutionary origins of each of these unisexual species during the Pleistocene. Significant phylogenetic incongruence was detected between mitochondrial and nuclear datasets and found to be especially associated with the asexual taxa. This pattern is expected when unisexual lineages arise via interspecific hybridization and thus represent genetic mosaics that possess certain nuclear alleles from the paternal species lineage and mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA) alleles from the maternal parent. Analyzing the mtDNA and nuclear relatedness of unisexuals with corresponding haplotypes of bisexual Calligrapha species allowed the putative identification of these maternal and paternal species lineages for each unisexual species. Strong phenotypic similarities between unisexual taxa and their paternal parent species supported a model that involves both backcrosses of interspecific hybrids with a paternal parent and unreduced gametes. This model accounts for the origins of apomixis, polyploidy, and an overrepresentation of paternal nuclear alleles (and associated phenotypes) in unisexuals. This model is also consistent with the tetraploid karyotypes of unisexual Calligrapha, in which three sets of chromosomes (of presumed paternal ancestry) are quite morphologically homogeneous compared to the fourth. Especially intriguing was a consistent association of unisexual species with the host plant of the paternal parent but never with the maternal host. The statistical implausibility of these patterns occurring by chance further supports our inference of parental species. Moreover, it points to a potentially critical role for host-association in the formation and preservation of unisexual lineages. These findings suggest that ecological factors are critical for the diversification of unisexual as well as bisexual taxa and thus point out new research directions in the area of ecological speciation.  相似文献

From an ancestor with bisexual flowers, plants with unisexual flowers, or even unisexual individuals have evolved in different lineages of angiosperms. The Asteraceae tribe Inuleae includes hermaphroditic, monoecious, dioecious, and gynomonoecious species. Gynomonoecy, the sexual system in which female and bisexual flowers occur on the same plant, is prevalent in the Asteraceae. We inferred one large gene phylogeny (ndhF) and two supertrees to investigate whether gynomonoecy was a stage in the evolution from hermaphroditism to monoecy. We identified transitions in sexual system evolution using the stochastic character mapping method. From gynomonoecious ancestors, both hermaphroditic and monoecious descendants have evolved. Gynomonoecy was not restricted to a stage in the evolution toward monoecy because the number of transitions and the rate of change from monoecy to gynomonoecy were much higher than the opposite. We also investigated one hypothesized association among female flowers and the development of a petaloid ray as an explanation of gynomonoecy maintenance in Asteraceae. We found that peripheral female flowers and petaloid rays were phylogenetically correlated. However, empirical evidence shows that a causal relationship between these traits is not clear.  相似文献

In bryophytes, the possibility of intragametophytic selfing creates complex mating patterns that are not possible in seed plants, although relatively little is known about patterns of inbreeding in natural populations. In the peat‐moss genus Sphagnum, taxa are generally bisexual (gametophytes produce both sperm and egg) or unisexual (gametes produced by separate male and female plants). We sampled populations of 14 species, aiming to assess inbreeding variation and inbreeding depression in sporophytes, and to evaluate correlations between sexual expression, mating systems, and microhabitat preferences. We sampled maternal gametophytes and their attached sporophytes at 12–19 microsatellite loci. Bisexual species exhibited higher levels of inbreeding than unisexual species but did generally engage in some outcrossing. Inbreeding depression did not appear to be common in either unisexual or bisexual species. Genetic diversity was higher in populations of unisexual species compared to populations of bisexual species. We found a significant association between species microhabitat preference and population genetic diversity: species preferring hummocks (high above water table) had populations with lower diversity than species inhabiting hollows (at the water table). We also found a significant interaction between sexual condition, microhabitat preference, and inbreeding coefficients, suggesting a vital role for species ecology in determining mating patterns in Sphagnum populations. © 2015 The Linnean Society of London, Biological Journal of the Linnean Society, 2015, 115 , 96–113.  相似文献

The leaf beetle genus Calligrapha is one of the few examples of animals with several obligate unisexual, female‐only species. Previous work showed that each one arose independently from interspecific hybridization events involving different species. However, all of them clustered in a single mtDNA clade together with some individuals of the parental bisexual species, which appeared as deeply polyphyletic in the mtDNA genealogy of the genus. The dating of these splits using a molecular clock placed them in the Quaternary and it was hypothesized that climatic change during this period may have favored range expansions and secondary contacts required for hybridization. In this work, we test this hypothesis and the origins of unisexuality in Calligrapha examining the diversity of mitochondrial (cox1) and nuclear (wingless, Wg) genes and the Bayesian continuous mtDNA phylogeography of a sample of more than 500 specimens of two bisexual species of Calligrapha at a continental scale and two unisexual species derived from them. Besides a major topological difference, whereby each bisexual species is monophyletic for Wg but paraphyletic for cox1, both gene datasets are consistent with a minimum of seven evolutionary lineages, coherent with geography and consistent with an ordered expansion to occupy their current ranges. The results also imply their survival in well‐established glacial refuges during the Last Glacial Maximum (LGM). Thus, for bisexual C. multipunctata there are two main, southern and northern lineages. The southern lineage expanded its range in two evolutionary branches, to the Rocky Mountains and to the northern Mississippi and Ohio River basins, respectively. The northern lineage has one branch in the Upper Mississippi and one that expanded west to the Pacific Northwest and east to the northeastern North Atlantic, finding refuge in both areas. These major lineages are parapatric in the Northern Great Plains, an area consistent with them having found refuge in the so‐called Driftless region during the LGM. For bisexual C. philadelphica, one northern lineage expanded west from the northern Appalachians and one east and southwest along the axis of the Appalachians, and the timing of events is consistent with their persistence in glacial refugia at both sides of the main Great Lakes lobe of the Laurentide Ice Sheet. There is evidence that the northeastern North Atlantic lineages of both species hybridized at the edge of their ranges after the LGM. The additional, divergent mtDNA lineage of these species shows evidence of range expansions of two lineages, one for each species, in an area south of the Laurentide Ice Sheet, and giving origin to the unisexual species by way of hybridization with other species in the Alleghanian region after the LGM. Interestingly, the individuals of supposedly bisexual species in this clade are all females. This suggests that unisexuality actually predates the origin of unisexual taxa in this system and that some bisexual species in Calligrapha may be species complexes instead, with cryptic species differing in their reproductive mode.  相似文献

A cytogenetic investigation on male and female reproductive cells of Aglaothamnion oosumiense Itono indicates that the sexuality of this species might be determined by a sex chromosome. Chromosome counts in female and male gametophytes gave 37 and 36, respectively. Sex ratio of gametophytes was 1:1. Both male-derived and female-derived bisexual plants were observed. Bisexual plants were different in gross morphology and position of carpogonial branches from normal unisexual gametophytes. The chromosome number of female-derived bisexual plants was N=37 and male-derived bisexual plants was N=36. Some male plants developed parasporangia in addition. The paraspore germlings showed the same chromosome number as the male plants. The fertilized carpogonium and gonimoblast cells had 2N = ca. 70 chromosomes.  相似文献

Unisexual flowers have evolved repeatedly in the angiosperms. In Poaceae, multiple transitions from bisexual to unisexual flowers are hypothesized. There appear to be at least three distinct developmental mechanisms for unisexual flower formation as found in members of three subfamilies (Ehrhartoideae, Panicoideae, Pharoideae). In this study, unisexual flower development is described for the first time in subfamily Chloridoideae, as exemplified by Bouteloua dimorpha. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and anatomy were used to characterize the development of male (staminate) and female (pistillate) flowers, spikelets, and inflorescences. We found the developmental pathway for staminate flowers in B. dimorpha to be distinct from that described in the other three subfamilies, showing gynoecial arrest occurs at a different stage with possible loss of some cellular contents. However, pistillate flowers of B. dimorpha had some similarity to those described in other unisexual-flowered grasses, with filament and anther differentiation in abortive stamens. Comparing our findings with previous reports, unisexual flowers seem to have evolved independently in the four examined grass subfamilies. This analysis suggests the action of different genetic mechanisms, which are consistent with previous observations that floral unisexuality is a homoplasious condition in angiosperms.  相似文献

Variation at 18 allozyme loci was assayed among representatives of the geographically widespread, triploid parthenogenetic form of Heteronotia binoei. A minimum of 52 different genotypes were observed among 143 individuals. Virtually all localities sampled had multiple genotypes among the unisexuals. This represents unusually high genotypic diversity for a unisexual vertebrate. Heterozygosity in the triploids was higher than in diploid bisexual populations of H. binoei. Comparison with the alleles present in the diploid bisexuals confirms that the parthenogens are hybrids and indicates that most of the genotypic diversity stems from repetitive hybrid origins. However, the presence of some alleles unique to the parthenogens suggests that mutation adds to their genetic diversity. The genetic structure of this geographically widespread parthenogen suggests the hypothesis that the persistence and spread of the unisexual lineages is facilitated by genotypic diversity.  相似文献

The distribution of perigonia, perichaetia, and sporophytesof Pleurozium schreberi has been investigated in Britain andin some other areas. Fruiting populations are widespread ina zone extending from northern Scotland across southern Scandinavia,but are rare in southern Britain, and appear to be infrequentin many other parts of western Europe. Less information is availableoutside western Europe: fruiting collections have been examinedfrom scattered localities throughout much of the species' northerncircumpolar range, but there is no evidence of areas where theyare abundant. The rarity of sporophytes is correlated with a rarity of plantsbearing male inflorescences. Barren specimens normally comprisedonly female and sterile plants, while most fruiting specimenswere bisexual but contained more female than male stems. Femaleplants are abundant throughout Great Britain, but plants withmale inflorescences appear to be widespread only in northernScotland and in East Anglia. The latter area is unusual in thatsporophyte production fails in many bisexual colonies. Sporophyte production was stimulated experimentally by transplantingmale plants from East Anglia into female populations in theWest Midlands. The male plants spread vegetatively within thefemale colonies, and perigonia developed during six successiveyears. At an East Anglian station sporophytes developed aftermaterial was transplanted between unisexual male and femalecolonies only 10 m apart.  相似文献

In Catasetum viridiflavum Hook., a drought-deciduous orchid from central Panama that produces unisexual flowers, plants possess up to nine annually-produced pseudobulbs. I investigated the role of these structures in plant growth and flowering by 1) relating annual shoot size and flower production to the size and number of pseudobulbs possessed by plants, 2) experimentally severing connections between young and old pseudobulbs when plants were dormant and monitoring their subsequent vegetative growth and flowering, and 3) determining the seasonal variation in water content, total nonstructural carbohydrates, nitrogen, and phosphorus in pseudobulbs. In small plants (1 to 3 pseudobulbs) pseudobulb stores appeared important to both vegetative growth and flowering. In larger (= older) plants, pseudobulb number was not related to vegetative growth and experimental separations of young from old pseudobulbs did not affect growth. However, flower production by experimental plants was significantly reduced relative to controls. Male plants were usually smaller than female plants in the areas studied; however, experimental reductions of pseudobulb number did not affect the sex expression of plants. All measured nutritional components of pseudobulbs exhibited significant seasonal variation. Carbohydrates appeared most important for supporting growth immediately following dormancy. Nitrogen and phosphorus were less important for this role and may have been more important for determining the number of flowers produced by plants.  相似文献

Contrary to other unisexual vertebrates except a little-known fossorial snake, the Indo-Pacific anthropophilous, parthenogenetic lacertilian Lipododactylus lugubris is vastly more widespread than its bisexual relatives. At the same time, it shows negligible enzyme polymorphism and low overall heterozygosity in its usual diploid condition, which suggests the possibility that hybridization did not intervene when thelytoky was brought about. Clones are in much higher proportion among the sympatric triploids, but they too have a low relative heterozygosity, compounded by gene dosage restriction since no more than two out of the three alleles have been found expressed at any locus. Isozyme data suggest an origin of the complex in South East Asia, which conclusion is substantiated by the presence of a bisexual sibling species in the Philippine Islands.  相似文献

Pollination ecology and reproductive success of Jack-in-the-pulpit ( Arisaema triphyllum ) were studied in two natural populations in Québec, Canada. Individual A. triphyllum plants can be of three types: male, female or bisexual. In both populations studied, the presence of bisexual inflorescences was not negligible (13%), where 'female' and 'male' bisexual plants were categorised according to the relative number of stamens and ovaries. 'Male bisexual' plants produce only pollen and 'female bisexual' plants produce only fruit. Hence, A. triphyllum is a true dioecious plant, as each plant only reproduces through either the male or the female function. 'Female bisexual' plants were equivalent to female plants in terms of visitation rate by insects, fructification rate and production of berries and seeds. Neither agamospermy in female plants nor self-pollination in 'female bisexual' plants was found, thus A. triphyllum relies on insects for cross-pollination. Despite the long flowering cycle, a low visitation rate was documented: only 20–40% of inflorescences were visited, according to gender, by a mean of 1.5 insects. In this study, Mycetophilidae represented the most generically diversified and abundant family, as well as the most efficient insect pollinator, especially the genera Docosia and Mycetophila .  相似文献

We analysed the home ranges of a community of Darevskia rock lizards composed of a bisexual species (D. valentini), two parthenogens (D. armeniaca and D. unisexualis), and two backcross forms between bisexual and unisexual forms. We estimated home range areas of ink-marked, GPS-located lizards using Minimum Convex Polygon (MCP) and 95% of the locations for those individuals with five or more sightings. The bisexual D. valentini was the species with the largest home ranges, distances travelled, and the most intersections. No differences between unisexual species and backcrosses were recorded for any comparison. In males, home range size and perimeter were related to morphological characteristics. Contrary to what has been described in allopatry, unisexual species showed smaller home ranges and fewer overlaps than sympatric bisexual species. We tentatively suggest that the presence of potential bisexual partners might increase sexual competition among parthenogenetic females while differences in habitat use should also be considered.  相似文献

Unisexual populations were found largely at the periphery of the geographic range of the mayfly Eurylophella funeralis in eastern North America. Bisexual populations generally had a normal sex ratio but at least two populations were observed with only about 2–11% males. Hatch success for unfertilized eggs depended on temperature but in general averaged >61% in unisexual populations and < 14% in bisexual populations. Eggs took about 65 d to hatch at 10°C and 19 d at 25°C; no hatching occurred at 5 or 30°C. Successful oviposition was observed for about 97% and 20% of unmated female adults from unisexual and bisexual populations respectively. The hatch success of unfertilized eggs for three geographically distinct bisexual populations was in versely correlated with the proportion of males in the populations. The genetic structure of bisexual and unisexual populations was very similar. Unisexual populations consists of clones, with as few as four recognizable phenotypes being present at a given location. All offspring had the same phenotype as the mother. Tychoparthenogenesis is suggested as the most reasonable working hypothesis concerning the origin of unisexual populations in E. funeralis .  相似文献

基部被子植物金粟兰科(Chloranthaceae)的单性花或两性花结构十分简单,雪香兰(Hedyosmum orientale)花单性、雌雄异株,花的形态及结构与其它属物种具有显著的差异,对于研究被子植物花特别是花被的起源和系统进化具有重要意义。该研究采用电子显微镜和光学显微镜观察了雪香兰单性花的器官发生及发育过程。结果表明,雌、雄花均为顶生和腋生,多个小花呈聚伞圆锥状排列。雄花外侧是苞片,每朵雄花上着生150–200个雄蕊,花轴基部着生少数退化的叶原体。苞片原基及其腋生的花原基最初呈圆丘状,随后伸长。在雄花发育过程中,苞片原基比雄蕊原基生长快,雄花原基纵向伸长,叶原体原基在基部发生,雄蕊原基自下而上发生。每2朵雌花底部合生形成小聚伞花序,每朵雌花被一苞叶包裹,由单心皮和三棱型子房构成,外覆三裂叶状花被。在雌花发育过程中,雌花原基比苞片原基生长快,花被原基首先于花顶端发生,随后花顶端中心凹陷,进一步发育成具有单心皮的子房原基。雪香兰的单性花发育不经过两性同体阶段,花分生组织只起始雄蕊器官或雌蕊器官的发育。研究结果支持雪香兰单性花是原始性状的观点,雄花叶原体与雌花三裂叶状花被同源,可能是花被(萼片与花瓣)的起源。  相似文献
