Ocean Drilling Program (ODP) Site 1260 recovered a near-continuous and expanded (187-m thick) middle Eocene carbonate sequence at mid-bathyal depths on Demerara Rise off Suriname, South America. A calcareous nannofossil biostratigraphic framework has been established for the sequence to aid multi-proxy cyclostratigraphic analyses. The diversity of calcareous nannofossils is reasonably high and preservation moderate throughout most of the section, and the proximity to the continent is indicated by the occurrence of braarudosphaerids in the lower three quarters of the section. The species richness of sphenoliths is particularly high, and our data confirm the occurrence of new sphenoliths during the middle Eocene as shown recently by Bown and Dunkley Jones (2006). In particular we corroborate the occurrences of Sphenolithus strigosus and S. runus that these authors found in their Zone NP16 Tanzania sediments, however we extend the ranges of these taxa down into Zone NP15 (CP13). Moreover we document the occurrence of Bramletteius serraculoides in Zone NP15 (CP13b) and the occurrence of Sphenolithus predistentus in NP16 (CP14a), extending their known ranges down column.  相似文献

Well-preserved Cretaceous (Albian–Turonian) radiolarians were extracted from radiolarian-bearing chert olistoliths of the Monagroulli Member within the Moni Mélange (Campanian-Maastrichtian, Southern Cyprus). Four assemblages were distinguished: Middle Albian–Lower Cenomanian (Thanarla spoletoensis Zone), Upper Albian–Lower Cenomanian (Thanarla spoletoensis Zone, Dorypyle? anisa Subzone), lowermost Turonian (base of Alievium superbum Zone) and Lower Turonian (Alievium superbum Zone). The radiolarian assemblages are diverse and have taxonomic composition similar to coeval assemblages of Italy and Spain. The sediments of the Monagroulli Member differ from coeval rocks of the Mamonia Complex (western Cyprus) by the more common presence of radiolarian cherts and may have been formed in the distal part of a continental margin with less input of clastic material. A new spicular radiolarian genus Cyprothamnus with 2 new species (C. multifurcatus and C. moniensis) is described from the Lower Turonian strata.  相似文献

Rare Radiolaria occur in the Upper Cenomanian-Lower Turonian part of finely laminated black shales recovered from Sites 1258 and 1261 of Demerara Rise (Ocean Drilling Program Leg 207, western tropical Atlantic, off Surinam). The observed fauna are of a low diversity, with up to 12 species co-occurring in a single sample and 49 species identified in total in both sites. Nassellarians and “Spumellarians” are equally represented in the assemblages. Diverse species of Stichomitra and Theocampe are particularly common, including the two new species described herein: Theocampe costata and T. demeraraense. Radiolarian preservation is on average moderate to poor, suggesting substantial influence of diagenetic alterations to species diversity. The few well-preserved assemblages can potentially provide better information about Cenomanian-Turonian Radiolarian biodiversity, but given their low abundance in the processed sediment samples, the diversity sampled during this study is considered to be an underestimate of the original Radiolarian diversity at Demerara. However, the abundance and diversity of Theocampe in Upper Cenomanian levels is noteworthy. Given the earliest known occurrence of the genus from Upper Albian sediments of the Deep Ivorian Basin it is likely that it originated and diversified in the opening Equatorial Atlantic Gateway. Based on the stable carbon isotope curve, the OAE-2 interval is clearly identified in the sedimentary sequence of both studied sites and helps to specify the known age range of three species (Acanthocircus hueyi, Archaeospongoprunum bipartitum and Rhopalosyringium hispidum). The most intriguing result of this study is the paucity of Radiolaria within the OAE-2 interval of the deeper site (1258) and the total absence of this micro-zooplankton group in the OAE-2 interval of the proximal site (1261). Radiolaria are the most abundant and diverse at the distal Site 1258, below OAE-2, while the proximal Site 1261 contains very few Radiolaria. The opposite pattern is observed above OAE-2 (few Radiolaria at site 1258, more abundant at site 1261). The paucity or absence of Radiolaria within the OAE-2 interval may be due to the upward excursion of the chemocline in the southern part of the Northern proto-Atlantic. Upwelling of deep warm waters may have fuelled primary productivity (sulfate-reducing bacteria) but prevented at the same time micro-zooplankton survival and proliferation after intensification of euxinic conditions in the surface waters.  相似文献

An important new ammonite fauna was collected by Fülöp in 1953 and 1960 from basal lenses between a Tithonian hardground and the overlying Tata Limestone Formation containing many heteromorph ammonites. This assemblage of ammonites has been determined as being of Early Albian ( tardefurcata Zone) age. Among the heteromorphs are species of Tonohamites and Ptychoceras , which are familiar components of Late Aptian or Early Albian ammonite faunas. The genera Ephamulina , Hamites and Protanisoceras are also recorded, the earliest species of which had previously come from sediments of late Early Albian ( mammillatum Zone) age. While Hamites and Protanisoceras are common in Europe, Ephamulina had previously only been known from Madagascar. The discovery of Ephamulina , Hamites and Protanisoceras supports the view that these phylogenetically significant ammonites had radiated close to the Aptian/Albian boundary. Four new species of Hamites ( H. czaszari , H. fazekasensis , H. fueloepi and H. kalvariensis ) and one new species of Tonohamites ( T. boldii ) are described.  相似文献

Palynological analyses were carried out in 96 core samples with the objective of determining the relative age of calcareous clays, in holes 1257A, 1258C and 1260B of ODP Leg 207, drilled on the Demerara Rise, northern coast of Suriname, Equatorial Atlantic. The palynological assemblages recovered consisted of spores, pollen grains, dinoflagellate cysts, palynoforaminifers and prasinophytes and appeared reasonably well preserved. The miospores showed little diversification, where the most significant genera were Crybelosporites and Elaterosporites. The dinocysts showed greater diversity and abundance, predominating over the miospores in the three holes. In the three holes analyzed, eight genera and three species of spores, eight genera and eleven species of pollen grains, and 24 genera and 44 species of dinoflagellates were identified. The middle to late Albian age was determined on the basis of bioevents of recognized species with chronostratigraphic value. The species diagnosed mostly included the miospores Elaterosporites protensus, Elaterosporites verrucatus, Inaperturopollenites simplex and the dinocysts Cribroperidinium muderongense, Dinopterygium cladoides, Litosphaeridium arundum, Litosphaeridium conispinum, Oligosphaeridium complex and Stiphrosphaeridium anthophorum.  相似文献

Abundance patterns of planktic and benthic foraminifera from a tropical Atlantic drill site (Ocean Drilling Program Site 1259, Demerara Rise, Suriname margin) display a pronounced 400 kyr cyclicity, uninterrupted throughout our  87.8–92 Ma record, between two clearly distinguishable assemblages: (1) a pelagic foraminifer fauna, which represents a deep oxygen minimum zone, and (2) another assemblage representing a shallow oxygen minimum zone where the foraminifer fauna is dominated by a higher diversity population of mostly small clavate and biserial species common in epicontinental seas. The cyclic changes in the long eccentricity band (400 kyr) between these two assemblages are proposed to reflect changes in the mean latitudinal position of the Intertropical Convergence Zone (ITCZ). Associated fluctuations in precipitation and trade wind strength may have influenced the upwelling regime at Demerara Rise leading to the observed cyclicity of planktic foraminiferal assemblages. The severe Turonian to Coniacian paleoclimatic and paleoceanographic changes in the Atlantic Ocean (e.g., gateway opening, cooling, and glaciation), however, seem to have no influence on the composition of tropical planktic foraminiferal faunas. There is no apparent relationship between foraminifer abundances and a major deflection in the stable isotope record interpreted elsewhere as a sign of the growth and decay of a large polar ice sheet.  相似文献

The Albian spore-pollen zonation of Australia is used to date terrestrial sequences from Antarctica to New Zealand. A detailed qualitative and quantitative study of the Albian Crybelosporites striatus and Coptospora paradoxa Zones in the Gippsland Basin confirms many of the published zone indicator taxa are reliable. The first and last appearance datums can be further refined quantitatively based on the upward reduction in the abundance of seed fern produced pollen. Three subzones are defined in the C. paradoxa Zone using a combination of presence/absence range and abundance data. These are (from oldest to youngest): the Trilobosporites trioreticulosus, Pilosisporites grandis and Cicatricosisporites cuneiformis Subzones. This latter subzone presents a new subdivision of this zone in the Gippsland Basin in southeast Australia. All these subzonal divisions have sufficient resolution to facilitate reservoir-scale correlation of fluvial strata confined to the C. paradoxa Zone in the Gippsland Basin. This study has the first record of Taxodiaceaepollenites hiatus in the Early Cretaceous of Australia and a new species Aequitriradites burgerii is described. A re-examination of the chronology of the zones in the Cretaceous marine basins confirms a 103.5 Ma age for the top of the C. paradoxa Zone, however the chronology of the base of this zone is unclear in the Albian.  相似文献

Organic dinoflagellate cysts are studied from the sedimentary sequence of hole 1-SPS-14A, drilled during oil exploration in the Santos Basin, Brazilian continental margin. The Ariri and Florianópolis Formations (Transitional sequence) do not contain any dinocysts. The oldest found dinocysts occur at the base of the Drift sequence in sediments, within platform carbonates of the Guarujá Formation. Continuous sea-level rise throughout the late Albian and Cenomanian submerged the carbonate platform with the terrigenous input of the Itanhaém Formation. The transgressive phase reached its peak during the Cenomanian/Turonian transition. Pelites were deposited during oceanic anoxic event (OAE-2), consisting the lower part of the Itajaí-Açu Formation. Normal oceanic conditions re-established in the late Turonian. The Brazilian dinocyst assemblage has tethyan affinities. Some species (i.e., Dinopterygium cladoides, Litosphaeridium arundum, Odontochitina rhakodes and Systematophora cretacea) suggest a middle Albian age for the carbonate platform of the Guarujá Formation. The lower part of the Guarujá Formation was not dated by other microfossils. An uppermost Albian or lower Cenomanian age is suggested for the base of the Itanhaém Formation on the basis of species Palaeohystrichophora infusorioides and Ovoidinium verrucosum. The Cenomanian-Turonian boundary cannot be characterized by dinocysts. Species Atopodinium iuvene, which is known from Turonian sediments in Europe, was found at the top of the Itajaí-Açu Formation. The observed dinocyst bioevents (i.e., last occurrence) are correlated with known foraminiferal, nannofossil and other palynological bioevents. The diversity of the assemblages remains constant throughout the various palaeoenvironments as these are reflected by the Guarujá and Itajaí-Açu Formations, but relative abundances of taxa are variable. Genera Coronifera, Florentinia, Ovoidinium, Spiniferites and Trichodinium are abundant in the carbonate platform assemblages (Guarujá Formation). Genera Cribroperidinium and Cyclonephelium are abundant in detrital sediments (Itajaí-Açu Formation). Only one species (Subtilisphaera guarujaensis n. sp.) is restricted to the carbonate platform environment.  相似文献

During Ocean Drilling Program Leg 207 at Demerara Rise (western tropical Atlantic) expanded sections of organic-rich laminated shales of late Cretaceous age, including the Cenomanian/Turonian boundary interval (CTBI) were recovered. These sediments yield rich assemblages of calcareous nannofossils, offering a unique possibility to calibrate the stable carbon isotope curve (δ13Corg). The calcareous nannofossils of Sites 1258, 1259, 1260 and 1261 have been investigated in order to gain a detailed biostratigraphic framework for the CTBI in the tropical latitudes. The bioevents observed have been correlated with the characteristic δ13Corg excursion of the CTBI. The events occurring during the excursion, and slightly below and above it, include the first occurrences of the calcareous nannofossil species Cylindralithus biarcus, Quadrum gartneri, Quadrum intermedium, Eprolithus octopetalus, Eprolithus eptapetalus, Eiffellithus eximius and the last occurrences of Corollithion kennedyi and Axopodorhabdus albianus. These bioevents have been correlated with those of other biostratigraphically and chemostratigraphically studied CTBI sections.  相似文献

Staphylothermus marinus Fiala and Stetter 1986 belongs to the order Desulfurococcales within the archaeal phylum Crenarchaeota. S. marinus is a hyperthermophilic, sulfur-dependent, anaerobic heterotroph. Strain F1 was isolated from geothermally heated sediments at Vulcano, Italy, but S. marinus has also been isolated from a hydrothermal vent on the East Pacific Rise. We report the complete genome of S. marinus strain F1, the type strain of the species. This is the fifth reported complete genome sequence from the order Desulfurococcales.  相似文献

Tocopherols serve a critical role as antioxidants inhibiting lipid peroxidation in photosynthetic organisms, yet are seldom used in geobiological investigations. The ubiquity of tocopherols in all photosynthetic lifeforms is often cited as an impediment to any diagnostic paleoenvironmental potential, while the inability to readily analyze these compounds via conventional methods, such as gas chromatography–mass spectrometry, further diminishes the capacity to serve as useful ‘biomarkers’. Here, we analyzed an exceptionally preserved black shale sequence from the Demerara Rise that spans Oceanic Anoxic Event 2 (OAE-2) to reexamine the significance of tocopherols and associated derivatives (i.e. tocol derivatives) in ancient sediments. Tocol derivatives were analyzed via liquid chromatography–quadrupole time-of-flight–mass spectrometry and included tocopherols, a methyltrimethyltridecylchroman, and the first reported detection of tocopherol quinones and methylphytylbenzoquinones in the geologic record. Strong correlations between tocol derivatives were observed over the studied interval. Tocol derivative concentrations and ratios, which normalized tocopherols to potential derivatives, revealed absolute and relative increases in tocopherols as exclusive features of OAE-2 that can be explained by two possible mechanisms related to tocopherol production and preservation. The development of photic zone euxinia during OAE-2 likely forced an upward migration of oxygenic photoautotrophs, increasing oxidative stress that elicited heightened tocopherol biosynthesis. However, shoaling euxinic conditions may have simultaneously acted to enhance tocopherol preservation given the relatively high lability of tocopherols in the water column. Both scenarios could produce the observed stratigraphic distribution of tocol derivatives in this study, although the elevated tocopherol concentrations that define OAE-2 at the Demerara Rise are primarily attributed to enhanced tocopherol production by shoaling phytoplanktonic communities. Thus, the occurrence of tocopherols and associated derivatives in sediments and rocks of marine origin is likely indicative of shallow-water anoxia, tracking the phytoplanktonic response to the abiotic stresses associated with vertical fluctuations in pelagic redox.  相似文献

The Paroniceratinae constitute a group widely recorded in the Tethys realm. However, they represent alone a small part, less than 1%, of the ammonoidea obtained in Toarcian sediments from the regions located at the east of the Iberian Plateau (Iberian Range). The values are yet smaller in the northern regions (Cantabrian Range) and in the west (Portugal), and show a sporadic presence in the Betics Ranges. In this study, the biostratigraphical distribution and the biochronostratigraphical position of the recorded species in the more representative expanded sections of Spain are checked and compared with those of other areas of the NW Europe bioprovinces and of the Tethys. The obtained specimens from Frechiella: F. subcarinata (Young and Bird), F. helenae Renz, F. venantii (Catullo), F. kammerkarensis (Stolley) and F. cf. octaviae Renz are described and figured, all of them proceeding from sediments of the Bifrons Zone in the Iberian Range, as well as those of Paroniceras: P.sternale (d’Orbigny) and P.helveticum Renz, and Oxyparoniceras: O. (O.) cf. telemachi (Renz), O. (O.) buckmani (Bonarelli), O. (N.) cf. undulosum (Monestier), O. (N.) cf. morbiense (Renz) and O. (N.) cf. brocardi Rulleau, Bécaud and Neige, proceeding from sediments of the interval between the Bifrons Zone (Semipolitum Subzone) and the Insigne Zone (Insigne Subzone), in the Iberian and Cantabrian Ranges. The Frechiella and Oxyparoniceras species are developed and recorded in the Iberian Plateau margins during the Bifrons Zone and the Insigne Zone, respectively, during the same intervals than the transgressive maxima of the LJ3 and LJ4 second order cycles recognized in all the studied area, while Paroniceras species make it during the Variabilis Zone, that concur with the final regressive stage of the LJ3 cycle.  相似文献

The Agadir Basin (Moroccan Atlantic margin) is characterized by its fossil richness, including organic-walled microfossils. The palynological analysis of the middle Cretaceous succession from the Tamzargout section and EGA.1 well reveals the presence of well-preserved and diverse assemblage, rich in dinoflagellate cysts. The assemblages contain stratigraphic marker taxa and show significant chronostratigraphic events. Based on these bioevents and on the comparison with different palaeogeographic domains, a determination of age was proposed. The biogeographic characteristics of most cosmopolitan taxa in this study confirm the establishment of new oceanic communication related to the opening of the equatorial Atlantic. The Albian-Cenomanian transition has been recognized only in EGA.1 well, whereas the Aptian-Albian transition, the early-mid Albian and the mid-late Albian have been defined in both the section and the well. The recorded associations are comparable to those of neighboring deposits and those of the Tethyian and Atlantic domains. The vertical distribution of the organic matter in the sediments of the Agadir Basin and the compilation of all palaeoenvironmental proxies allowed identifying an Albian transgression with specific palaeoenvironments in each interval. Neritic marine environments alternated with short phases of continental and oceanic influence is deduced for the late Aptian-early Cenomanian in this basin. The late Aptian-early to mid Albian recorded an outer neritic palaeoenvironment under oceanic influence; the mid to late Albian showed littoral conditions during a regressive phase fluctuating to middle to outer neritic environment; finally the late Albian-early Cenomanian transition was characterized by a middle neritic palaeoenvironment under coastal influence.  相似文献

The genusPisotrigonia Van Hoepen has page priority over the better-knownRinetrigonia Van Hoepen, of which it is thus a senior synonym. It is shown to comprise a closely allied plexus of species, ranging from Lower Tithonian to Maastrichtian, and thus phyletically distinct from its sister taxonPterotrigonia. Moreover, whereasPterotrigonia is cosmopolitan,Pisotrigonia has a distinctly Gondwanic distribution. The subfamily Pterotrigoniinae is reassessed and a new species,Pisotrigonia laevkosta, is described from the Upper Albian (Cristatum Zone) of Zululand.  相似文献

A first and detailed foraminiferal biostratigraphic work on the lower part of the Zongshan Formation (Limestone I and Calcareous Marl I sequence) in the Chaqiela section, Gamba, southern Tibet, allows the recognition of three latest Coniacian to middle Campanian planktic foraminiferal biozones: Dicarinella asymetrica Total Range Zone, Globotruncanita elevata Partial-Range Zone, and Contusotruncana plummerae Interval Zone. The base and top of the Santonian Stage in the Chaqiela section were placed at the lowest occurrence (LO) of Globotruncana linneiana and the highest occurrence (HO) of Dicarinella asymetrica, respectively. The deposition of the latest Coniacian to middle Campanian sediments of the lower Zongshan Formation in the Chaqiela section seems to have been continuous or at least without any major gap based on the planktic foraminiferal biozones and events.  相似文献

We examined factors and pathways involved in the transfer of mercury (Hg) to the food web in St. Lawrence River embayments near Cornwall, Ontario, where natural remediation of contaminated sediments (eventual burial by settling of cleaner sediments) has been adopted as a management strategy. Yellow perch (Perca flavescens) from one of the study zones (Zone 1) along the river by Cornwall contained significantly higher total mercury (THg) concentrations than perch from other equally contaminated zones. While THg concentrations in benthic invertebrates did not vary among contaminated zones, THg concentrations in yellow perch and invertebrate prey recovered from the perch stomachs were 1.5–2.5 times higher in Zone 1 than those from other zones, suggesting that prey selection affects THg accumulation more than habitat location. No significant differences were found in THg concentrations among different prey species within Zone 1, although there were significant differences in THg concentrations in the same prey species within Zone 1. In contrast, THg concentrations among different prey species increased significantly with trophic level in other contaminated and reference zones. The lack of correspondence between trophic position and THg accumulation in Zone 1 suggests two possibilities: (1) yellow perch in Zone 1 are highly mobile and are assimilating THg from a wide range of prey across Zone 1 with variable THg concentrations and (2) there may be an important non-dietary source of THg to the Zone 1 food web. Potential waterborne Hg sources to Zone 1 were investigated. Whereas THg and MeHg values in discharges from a disused canal were similar to Zone 1 surface water values (0.97 and 0.04 ng l?1, respectively), concentrations in storm sewer and combined sewer overflows discharging in the vicinity of Zone 1 were 19–45-fold (THg) and 2–4-fold (MeHg) higher than upstream river water. Contributions of Hg to the water column from sediment–water diffusion, estimated using a simple, well-mixed reactor model, ranged 0.05–0.1% of the surface water THg concentration and 1–2% of the MeHg concentration measured in summer months in Zone 1. Although not investigated in the other zones, a strong correlation (r 2 = 0.82) was found between MeHg in porewater and amphipod concentrations in Zone 1, indicating that the sediment porewater is bioavailable and likely an important pathway for transfer of sediment Hg to the foodweb. Large areas of Zone 1 contain bark deposits and produce high rates of gas ebullition, and may not provide favourable conditions for progressive burial with clean sediments and attenuation of Hg transfer to biota through natural remediation. Careful monitoring of surface sediment concentrations and biota is required in these areas. Failure to reduce concentrations of Hg in these media would indicate alternative or additional management measures are required.  相似文献

The Brilon-reef complex is one of the biggest Devonian carbonate buildups (~80 km2) of the Rheinisches Schiefergebirge. The Burgberg section is located in the southeastern fore-reef area of the Brilon Reef Complex and exposes a succession of strata (117 m thick), which extends from the Middle Givetian (middle varcus conodont Zone) to the Viséan (bilineatus conodont Zone). Field and microfacies observations led to the definition of nine microfacies that are integrated into a sedimentary model divided into off-reef, intermediate fore-reef, and proximal fore-reef sedimentary domains (SD). The off-reef domain (SD1) is the most distal setting observed and is characterized by fine-grained sediments, dominated by pelagic biota and the local occurrence of gravity-flow deposits. The intermediate fore-reef (SD2) is characterized by a mixture of biota and sediments coming from both deeper-water and shallow-water sources and is influenced by storm and gravity-flow currents. In this domain, Renalcis mound-like structures developed locally. Finally, the proximal fore-reef (SD3) corresponds to the most proximal setting that is strongly influenced by gravity-flow currents derived from the Brilon Reef Complex. The temporal evolution of microfacies in the fore-reef setting of the Burgberg section show five main paleoenvironmental trends influenced by the onset, general development, and demise/drowning of the Brilon Reef Complex. Fore-reef to off-reef lithologies and their temporal changes are from the base to the top of the section: (U1)—fine-grained sediments with large reef debris, corresponding to the initial development of the reef building upon submarine volcaniclastic deposits during the Middle Givetian (middle varcus Zone) and first export of reef debris in the fore-reef setting; (U2)—high increase of reef-derived material in the fore-reef area, corresponding to a significant progradation of the reef from the Middle Givetian to the Early Frasnian (maximum extension of the Brilon Reef Complex to the south, disparilis to the falsiovalis conodont biozones); (U3)—progressive decrease of shallow-water derived material and increase of fine-grained sediments and deep-water biota into the fore-reef setting, corresponding to the stepwise withdrawal of the reef influence; from the Middle to the Late Frasnian (jamieae conodont Zone); (U4)—development of a submarine rise characterized by nodular and cephalopod-bearing limestones extending from the Late Frasnian to the Late Famennian corresponding to the demise and drowning of the Brilon Reef Complex as a result of the Late Frasnian Kellwasser events (upper rhenana and triangularis conodont biozones); (U5)—significant deepening of the Burgberg area starting in the Late Famennian, directly followed by an aggrading trend marked by pelagic shales overlying the nodular limestone deposits.  相似文献

Radiolarians and planktonic foraminifers were studied from a series of continuous outcrops of the Upper Cretaceous (upper Campanian) Kannaviou Formation near Sarama Village (southwestern Cyprus). The composite study section has a narrow stratigraphic interval that covers the upper Campanian, with a total thickness of more than 70 m. The Amphipyndax tylotus (radiolarian) Zone is found within the study section. According to foraminiferal data the studied interval corresponds to the middle-upper Campanian age (from Contusotruncana plummerae Zone to the lower part of Gansserina gansseri Zone).  相似文献

The effects of a macroalgal mat (Ulva lactuca) on intertidal sand flat copepods were studied in Jamaica Bay, NY. In 1999, Ulva was removed from paired quadrats in the algal mat. Density and species richness were estimated from sediment cores over seven biweekly periods and compared with Ulva-removal quadrats and with an unvegetated reference site. In a separate analysis at the same site, species composition and density of all copepods within the algal mat were determined from replicated quadrat samples over seven dates. Emergence traps were deployed in all treatments in 1999 to quantify copepod movements from sediments into the water column during flooding tide. Dissolved oxygen (DO) was continuously monitored over several 96-h periods in and above the algal mat. In 2000, three biomass levels of Ulva (0, 100, 200 g DW per m2) were added to paired quadrats in the unvegetated zone. Density and species richness were estimated over eight time periods. Ulva removal resulted in significant increases in density and species richness, but levels remained lower than at the unvegetated site. Likewise, addition of Ulva biomass produced significant declines in copepod density. However, the differences between low- and high-Ulva-addition treatments were insignificant. Increases in phytal copepods after Ulva addition did not compensate for losses of epibenthic and infaunal species. The overall effect of the Ulva mat was a net loss of copepod density, including the loss of nearly all infaunal species. Anoxia in sediments and within the algal mat are correlated with declines in infaunal species and with escape by some infaunal species from the sediment into the water column.  相似文献
