Summary The present investigation examines the comparative growth rates, at various temperatures between 4 and 30°C, of two nematophagous fungiMonacrosporium ellipsosporum (Preuss), (Grove), Cooke and Dickinson andM. cionapagum (Drechsler), (Subramanian), Cooke and Dickinson, both isolated from the Antarctic and from Britain. No psychrophilic species were found although the results clearly show that both the Antarctic isolates were psychro-tolerant, displaying lower minimum, optimum and maximum temperatures for growth than the British isolates. A modified form ofM. ellipsosporum isolated from the Antarctic grew only between 4 and 15°C, indicating it to be much better adapted to such cold habitats than the other isolates examined. 相似文献

The response of Antarctic, tropical and temperate microalgae of similar taxonomic grouping to ultraviolet radiation (UVR)
stress was compared based on their growth and fatty acid profiles. Microalgae of similar taxa from the Antarctic (Chlamydomonas UMACC 229, Chlorella UMACC 237 and Navicula UMACC 231), tropical (Chlamydomonas augustae UMACC 246, Chlorella vulgaris UMACC 001 and Amphiprora UMACC 259) and temperate (Chlamydomonas augustae UMACC 247, Chlorella vulgaris UMACC 248 and Navicula incerta UMACC 249) regions were exposed to different UVR conditions. The cultures were exposed to the following conditions: PAR (42 μmol
photons m−2 s−1), PAR + UVA (854 μW cm−2) and PAR + UVA + UVB (117 μW cm−2). The cultures were subjected to UVA doses of 46.1, 92.2 and 184.4 J cm−2 and UVB doses of 6.3, 12.6 and 25.2 J cm−2 by varying the duration of their exposure (1.5, 3 and 6 h) to UVR during the light period (12:12 h light-dark cycle). UVA
did not affect the growth of the microalgae, even at the highest dose. In contrast, growth was adversely affected by UVB,
especially at the highest dose. The dose that caused 50% inhibition (ID50) in growth was used to assess the sensitivity of the microalgae to UVB. Sensitivity of the microalgae to UVB was species-dependent
and also dependent on their biogeographic origin. Of the nine microalgae, the Antarctic Chlorella was most tolerant to UVB stress (ID50 = 21.0 J cm−2). Except for this Chlorella, the percentage of polyunsaturated fatty acids of the microalgae decreased in response to high doses of UVB. Fatty acid profile
is a useful biomarker for UVB stress for some microalgae.

Summary Among the oleiferous Brassicas, B. napus has the highest seed and oil productivity. As it is a species adapted to the temperate regions, its spring type is either unable to flower or flowers too late in the short — day winter (rabi) season of the subtropics. B. napus (genome AACC) is an amphidiploid between B. campestris (AA) and B. oleracea (CC), and shares one genome with the other allotetraploids B. juncea (AABB) and B. carinata (BBCC). While B. napus lacks ecotypes adapted to the subtropics, the other four species are well represented in this climatic zone. Reciprocal crosses with or without one direct backcross to B. napus have been carried out with the intention of transfering short-day adaptability. The aim was to introgress the A genome of carefully selected early representatives of B. campestris and B. juncea with the corresponding genome in B. napus, and similary the C genome from B. oleracea and B. carinata with the analogous genome in B. napus. B. campestris, B. juncea and the clearly later species, B. oleracea var alboglabra and B. carinata, seem to be almost equally effective in introgressing the appropriate earliness necessary for growth in Bangladesh. One backcross sligthly delayed segregation of early types. Convergent crosses did not result in the transgression of earliness, which was unexpected since the inheritance of flowering and maturity indicated a polygenic regulation. This result is partly explained by assuming dominant oligogenic control of the photoperiodic response. Introgression of earliness with the C genome doesn't seem to be necessarily related with the earliness of the donor species. Intergenomic interactions may be important. Interesting new lines were selected with high yield. Thus there is a good probability that Bangladesh will have a new oil crop. As these lines were observed to be early in Sweden as well, they could potentially push rapseed cultivation further north in temperate regions where the growing period is limited by short summers.This article forms part of the author's Ph.D. thesis 相似文献

Morphological and anatomical features (including wood anatomy and pollen morphology) of the small neotropical genusPagameopsis (Rubiaceae-Rubioideae) are discussed and illustrated. The fused ovaries, fenestrate corolla tube, basally attached anther
filaments, and absence of raphides are especially noteworthy.Pagameopsis is definitely not a member of the Psychotrieae because of significant differences in wood anatomy and gynoecial and fruit
structure. A close affinity with Gaertnereae seems doubtful for similar reasons. The taxonomic affinities ofPagameopsis remain obscure. The genus shows similarities with several taxa of the Rubioideae, such as Coccocypseleae, Morindeae, Hedyotideae,

The properties of the phosphate uptake system of the cyanobacterium Anacystis nidulans have been studied during the transition from a phosphate-deficient non-growing state to a non-deficient growing state. In the phosphate-deficient state the high affinity phosphate transport system in the cell membrane is extremely adaptive. As a result of these adaptive features the phosphate transport system cannot be described by determinate, fixed parameters, because the transport system is influenced by the measurement of the uptake process itself. When the growing state has been initiated by a persisting phosphate pulse, the transport system rapidly loses its adaptive features and can then be characterized by determinate parameters that remain unchanged for a long period of time, even if no uptake occurs in that time. Depending on the amount of phosphate stored during a pulse the cell makes a choice between slow or fast growth. In the latter case the light harvesting and energy converting machinery is completely reorganized before growth commences. Thereby the components of this machinery conform to each other and to the stable properties of the phosphate transport system. It is suggested that the mutual adjustment of these adaptive energy converting subunits is guided by attractors that function as the final cause for the development of the whole system.An application of this model to an analysis of the selforganization of aquatic ecosystems is discussed. 相似文献

Summary The structure and anatomy of mature flowers of four species of Meliosma is investigated using scanning electron and light microscopy. The vasculature of the flower, including the structure of the
gynoecium, is described in detail. The mechanism of stamen maturation and pollen release is illustrated and discussed. The
existence of an explosive pollination mechanism is questioned for at least part of the species. Flowers are proterandrous
and fertile stamens are kept spatially separate from the style by a ring of large staminodes. Anthers are disporangiate by
the loss of the adaxial pollen sacs. During maturation the filament bends progressively outwards and releases the pollen on
the extension of the connective that acts as a secondary pollen presentation system. The nectary has five appendages topped
with stomata secreting abundant nectar. The relationships of Sabiaceae are discussed relative to other early diverging eudicots.
The significance of Sabiaceae as an isolated clade is highlighted, although some features point to a link with Menispermaceae. 相似文献

The effect of environmental parameters on the growthof Porphyra linearis gametophytes was examinedunder controlled conditions, and related to themultilinear regression growth model recently developedfor this seaweed under coastal conditions in theeastern Mediterranean. Growth chambers, a gradienttable, special culture devices and analytical methodswere combined for this culture study.The major factors significantly controlling thegrowth rate of the P. linearis gametophytein glass dishes were: photoperiod, temperature, agein culture, photosynthetic photon flux (PPF), salinityand water dynamics. Maximal growth occurred underdaylength of 12 h, medium temperature (15–20 °C), low PPF (70–140 mol photon m-2s-1), ambient salinity (30–40 ppt), 1–3 h ofdaily air exposure, and water velocity of 4 cm s-1.Photosynthesis and respiration rates weredominantly affected by daylength and temperature,while the concentration of pigments was dominantlyaffected by PPF and temperature.These conditions correspond well to the optimalnatural growth environment of this local species andare in agreement with the optimum estimated throughthe recently developed outdoor mathematical growthmodel. 相似文献

青海云杉是我国沙区通过种子育苗引种成功的物种。通过对不同储藏时间青海云杉和沙地云杉种子生活力测定、种子萌发对温度、光照、水盐胁迫以及幼苗生长对水盐胁迫和沙埋的响应实验,比较两种种子萌发和幼苗生长对环境因子适应性,为沙地云杉在我国沙区广泛引种提供参考。结果表明:1)在2年的储藏过程中,沙地云杉和青海云杉种子生活力分别由79%和72%下降了19%和5%; 2)沙地云杉和青海云杉种子适宜萌发温度分别为15—30℃和10—30℃,最适萌发温度分别为25℃(72%)和25/15℃(69%),除10℃和10/30℃外,两种种子萌发率在各温度下没有显著差异; 3)沙地云杉种子萌发光照条件为14 h光照/8 h黑暗交替(67%),青海云杉为24 h光照(61%)或24 h黑暗(61%); 4)水势在-2.7—0 MPa时,2种云杉的IGR(初始萌发率)、RGR(恢复萌发率)、ISL(初始幼苗长度)和RSL(恢复幼苗长度)均没有显著差异; 5) NaCl浓度在200 mmol/L和250 mmol/L,青海云杉种子IGR显著大于沙地云杉,NaCl浓度在0—450 mmol/L,青海云杉和沙地云杉种子RGR没有显著差异,当NaCl浓度为50 mmol/L和100 mmol/L,青海云杉ISL显著大于沙地云杉; 6)在0.5—2.0 cm沙埋深度时,青海云杉出苗率显著高于沙地云杉,沙地云杉最适沙埋深度0.5 cm,青海云杉为0.5—1.5 cm。因此,青海云杉种子萌发和幼苗生长比沙地云杉有更强的环境适应性,但只要采取合理的播种时间、播种深度和水分管理等措施,沙地云杉会和青海云杉一样在我国沙区大面积引种育苗。 相似文献

Summary The morphology of the gills of a primitive air breather (Amia calva) was examined by light microscopy of semithin sections of gill filaments, and gill perfusion pathways were identified by scanning-electron microscopic analysis of corrosion replicas prepared by intravascular injection of methyl methacrylate. The arrangement of gill filaments and respiratory lamellae is similar to that of teleosts with the exception of an interfilamental support bar that is fused to the outer margins of lamellae on adjacent filaments. The prebranchial vasculature is also similar to that of teleosts, whereas the postbranchial circulation of arches III and IV is modified to permit selective perfusion of the air bladder. Gill filaments contain three distinct vascular systems: (1) the respiratory circulation which receives the entire cardiac output and perfuses the secondary lamellae; (2) a nutrient system that arises from the postlamellar circulation and perfuses filamental tissues; (3) a network of unknown function consisting of subepithelial sinusoids surrounding afferent and efferent margins of the filament and traversing the filament beneath the interlamellar epithelium. Prelamellar arteriovenous anastomoses (AVAs) are rare, postlamellar AVAs are common especially at the base of the filament where they form a dense network of small tortuous vessels before coalescing into a large filamental nutrient artery. Unlike in most teleosts, the outer vascular margins of the lamellae are embedded in the interfilamental support bar and become the sole vasculature of this tissue. Arterial-arterial lamellar bypass vessels were not observed. The Notothenia coriiceps liver is commonly infected with parasites, reducing the hepatic mass and inducing the regeneration. In order to better understand
the effect of nutrient influx on hepatic regeneration at 0°C, a usual mammal hepatotrophic factor (HF) solution was injected
into ten fish (HF group), while ten fish were injected with saline solution (control), twice a day, for 15 days. The liver
and carcass weight were measured, and samples were obtained for histological studies. The HF group presented a higher liver/carcass
weight (62.5%) than control group. This increase in liver mass was due mainly to hepatocytes hypertrophy, including nuclear
size increase and cytoplasmic inclusions of glycogen. Hyperplasia is also observed, although to a lesser extent. The hepatic
reaction to HF in Antarctic fish was here demonstrated for the first time, helping to understand the liver response to seasonal

A flattened discoid flagellate collected from the Seto Inland Sea, Japan, has been examined by light and electron microscopy.
This alga agrees well withClisthodiscus luteus Carter. It has two heterodynamic flagella emerging from a furrow on the upward side of the cell that contains six to 13 yellow-green
parietal chloroplasts. It does not rotate but smoothly glide while swimming. The cell has a thin periplast lying between the
plasmalemma and chloroplasts. Neither lipid bodies nor mucocysts are seen in the periplast. The pyrenoid matrix being free
from thylakoids is penetrated by several cytoplasmic canals from various directions. There are no vesicles of periplastidal
network in the narrow space between chloroplast envelope and chloroplast ER.
The ultrastructural features ofO. luteus are unique, sharing certain characters with the raphidophycean algae but others withPseudopedinella pyriformis, a unique member of the Chrysophyceae. 相似文献

The relationship between inbreeding depression and inbreeding coefficient (F) for several important traits was investigated in an 11-year trial of maritime pine (Pinus pinaster). Five levels of inbreeding (F=0; 0.125; 0.25; 0.5; 0.75) were obtained in a mating design involving ten plus-trees, or their progenies, as parents (total of 51 families). For F=0.75, the mean inbreeding depressions were 27% for height, 37% for circumference at breast height (63% for bole volume), 23% for basal straightness (better straightness of the inbred trees), and 89% for female fertility (number of cones). Large differences were observed among inbred families for the same level of inbreeding. The evolution of depression with F was more or less linear, depending on the traits. Significant differences among F-levels appeared very early for height (from 5-years of age). Inbreeding depression was much more expressed during unfavorable years than during favorable years for yearly height growth. When compared with other Pinus species, maritime pine appears to be less affected by inbreeding, especially for the percentage of filled seeds and general vigor. A reduced genetic load in maritime pine may result from the evolutionary history of the species and its scattered distribution. 相似文献

Four Paraeuchaeta species and three aetideids were frequently encountered along 51°30′S in the Atlantic sector of the Southern Ocean. Paraeuchaeta antarctica was most abundant close to the Antarctic Polar Front. Within the genera Paraeuchaeta and Gaetanus, congeners usually partitioned the water column. Euchaetidae had high lipid (≤37% dry mass, DM in adult females) and wax
ester contents (≤22% DM). Fatty acid composition of Paraeuchaeta spp. was dominated by monounsaturated moieties, especially 16:1(n-7) and 18:1(n-9), while fatty alcohols were mainly saturated.
Surprisingly, only the bathypelagic P. barbata contained moderate amounts of 20:1(n-9) and 22:1(n-11) fatty acids (≤14%) and high levels of the respective fatty alcohols
(≤50%), generally considered trophic biomarkers for calanid copepods as prey. Thus, herbivorous calanid copepods seem to be
a readily available prey source at bathypelagic depths, indicating that their seasonal vertical migration provides a “trophic
shortcut” from primary production at the surface to the interior of the ocean. Aetideidae also contained substantial levels
of total lipid (14–36% DM), but wax esters contributed only up to 12% DM in copepodite stages C5 of Gaetanus spp., whereas other stages of Gaetanus and Aetideopsis minor only contained ≤6% DM of wax esters. The fatty acid compositions of Aetideidae were more balanced with 16:0, 18:1(n-9), 20:5(n-3),
and 22:6(n-3) as important components, indicating a generally omnivorous feeding behaviour. 相似文献

Summary In the Ivory Coast (Côte d'Ivoire) we analysed the structures and the lay-out of the underground gallery system of the fungus-growing termiteMacrotermes bellicosus. We found a radial pattern of principal and lateral galleries, as well as caves, depressions and vertical passages reaching a depth of 1–2 m. According to the results of our investigations the gallery networks built byM. bellicosus are unique among all known termite species;M. bellicosus constructs the densest (3.1 m/m2) and most superficial (2–6 cm under the surface) gallery networks among all comparable termite species investigated.Under experimental conditions involving an observation arena with a glass bottom, we were able to observe the dynamics of the radial development of the exploratory passages. We also observed the manner and rapidity of the termites' exploration of new ground, as well as the role played by the discovery of food in the design of the gallery system.We were able to show that, when food was scarce, the termites gained access to the arena much more rapidly, built a much denser gallery system and came up to the surface more frequently. 相似文献

The halotolerant, facultatively chemolithoautotrophic, gramnegative sulphur-oxidizing organism isolated from the gills of Thyasira flexuosa is shown to exhibit pleomorphism consistent with its being a member of the genus Thiomicrospira and not a Thiobacillus as originally classified. Its distinctive morphology, DNA base composition, and similarity of 16S rRNA sequences to that of Thiomicrospira sp. strain L-12 (which differs only in detail from the type species Thiomicrospira pelophila), lead us to reclassify this strain as Thiomicrospira thyasirae DSM5322. 相似文献

The enzymatic activity (expressed as milliunits per milligram total proteins) of three intestinal brush-border membrane enzymes, leucine aminopeptidase, alkaline phosphatase and maltase, measured over a range of temperatures between 1.5 and 37 °C, has been found to be much higher in the Antarctic fish Pagothenia bernacchii than in the temperate fish Anguilla anguilla. To explain this experimental observation the apparent Michaelis-Menten constant, the maximal velocity, the activation energy values and the thermal stability of these three enzymes were measured. The apparent Michaelis-Menten constant values of leucine amino peptidase and alkaline phosphatase were different in the intestine mucosal homogenate of the two fish at each measured temperature (from a minimum of 2.5 to a maximum of 37 °C). However, the values found at 2.5 °C for the Antarctic species and 15 °C for the eel where comparable. Furthermore, its value was unchanged in eel intestine apical membranes, both in the presence and without enzyme lipid microenvironment. While the maximal enzymatic activities of the leucine aminopeptidase and maltase did not decrease without their enzyme lipid microenvironment, produced by treatment with Triton X-100, the impairment of alkaline phosphatase maximal activity cannot be significantly differentiated from a non-specific inhibitory effect of the detergent. The activation energy values of leucine amino peptidase, alkaline phosphatase and maltase were lower in the Antarctic fish (11.7, 5.6 and 11.8 kcal·mol-1, respectively) than in the eel (13.6, 7.6 and 13.1 kcal·mol-1, respectively). The thermal stability of alkaline phosphatase and maltase is different in Pagothenia bernacchii and Anguilla anguilla intestinal homogenate.Abbreviations BBM

The closely related genera Carestiella, Schizoxylon and Stictis (Stictidaceae, Ostropales, Ascomycota) are revised in northern Scandinavia, and a revised phylogenetic hypothesis, including all seven species of this group in the area, is presented. A key to the species of Stictis s. lat. (including Carestiella, Schizoxylon and Stictis) in Northern Scandinavia is presented. S. albescens and S. confusum are described as new to science, and the new name S. brunnescens is introduced for S. mollis ssp. populorum, when treated as a distinct species. C. socia and S. albescens are the only representatives of their genera in northern Scandinavia, but a total of five species of Stictis are present in the area (S. brunnescens, S. confusum, S. mollis, S. populorum and S. radiata). Substantial within-species variation in ascoma morphology and wall pigmentation is revealed and discussed, and found to correlate with fungal lifestyles; optional lichenization apparently affects several details in fungal anatomy and morphology. 相似文献

In the Southwestern Atlantic Ocean, humpback whales migrate every winter to the Brazilian coast for breeding and calving in
the Abrolhos Bank. This breeding stock represents the remnants of a larger population heavily exploited during the beginning
of the 20th century. Despite its relevance to conservation efforts, the degree of current genetic variation and the migratory
relationship with Antarctic feeding areas for this population are still largely unknown. To examine these questions, we sequenced
∼400 bp of the mitochondrial DNA control region from samples taken off the Brazilian coast (n = 171) and near the Antarctic Peninsula (n = 77). The genetic variability of the Brazilian humpback whale breeding population was high and similar to that found in
other Southern Hemisphere breeding grounds. Phylogenetic analysis suggested the existence of a new mitochondrial clade that
exists at low frequency among Southern Hemisphere populations. Direct comparison between the Brazilian and the Colombia breeding
populations and the Antarctic Peninsula feeding population showed no genetic differentiation between this feeding region and
the Colombian breeding area or between feeding Areas I and II near the Antarctic Peninsula. In contrast, these populations
were genetically distinct from the Brazilian population. Two humpback whales sampled off South Georgia Islands, in the Scotia
Sea, shared identical haplotypes to whales from Brazil. Our results, supported by photo-identification and satellite telemetry
data, suggest that the main feeding area of the Southern Hemisphere humpback whale population is likely to be located near
the South Georgia/South Sandwich Islands area and not in the Antarctic Peninsula. 相似文献

The cowpea bears two distinctive types of extrafloral nectaries. One, on the stipels of trifoliolate leaves, consists of a loosely demarcated abaxial area (1–2 mm diameter) of widely-spaced trichomes (papillae) borne on a stomata-free epidermis, and lacking a specific vascular supply. Each trichome has up to eight apical (head) cells, two to four intermediate cells, and a single large stalk cell. The secretory faces of the apical cells bear wall ingrowths and an easily detached cuticle. The wall separating the stalk cell and the underlying epidermal cell(s) has a mean plamodesmatal frequency of 25/m2. The second type of nectary consists of a large elliptical mound of tissue (short and long axes about 2 mm and 4 mm) formed between a pair of flowers on an inflorescence stalk. It comprises four to eight cone-shaped subnits of secretory tissue, each with a circular secretory orifice and an individual supply of phloem, but not of xylem. Cells of the secretory tissue of the nectary subunits separate as they mature, and nectar flows to the orifice through the resulting intercellular spaces. Intact secretory cells and cellular debris are extruded into the nectar. Some of the sieve elements terminating in the inner secretory tissue exhibit open sieve pores. Each mature secretory cell contains many small (2 m diameter) spherical protein bodies and one to three large (up to 2–3 m diameter 15 m long), paracrystalline bodies. These inclusions are absent or not fully developed in inner, less mature regions of the secretory tissue.
