During summer 2007, Arctic microphytobenthic potential primary production was measured at several stations around the coastline of Kongsfjorden (Svalbard, Norway) at ≤5 m water depth and at two stations at five different water depths (5, 10, 15, 20, 30 m). Oxygen planar optode sensor spots were used ex situ to determine oxygen exchange in the overlying water of intact sediment cores under controlled light (ca. 100 μmol photons m−2 s−1) and temperature (2–4°C) conditions. Patches of microalgae (mainly diatoms) covering sandy sediments at water depths down to 30 m showed high biomass of up to 317 mg chl a m−2. In spite of increasing water depth, no significant trend in “photoautotrophic active biomass” (chl a, ratio living/dead cells, cell sizes) and, thus, in primary production was measured at both stations. All sites from ≤5 to 30 m water depth exhibited variable rates of net production from −19 to +40 mg O2 m−2 h−1 (−168 to +360 mg C m−2 day−1) and gross production of about 2–62 mg O2 m−2 h−1 (17–554 mg C m−2 day−1), which is comparable to other polar as well as temperate regions. No relation between photoautotrophic biomass and gross/net production values was found. Microphytobenthos demonstrated significant rates of primary production that is comparable to pelagic production of Kongsfjorden and, hence, emphasised the importance as C source for the zoobenthos.  相似文献

Seasonal variations in photosynthetic rates by microphytobenthos and phytoplankton at the Isshiki tidal flat in Mikawa Bay were measured with a 14C combustion method. In addition, diurnal variations in the photosynthetic rate and photosynthesis versus irradiance (P-I) curves were obtained through in situ incubation. The photosynthetic rate of microphytobenthos (annual average, 13.9 ± 6.4 mg C m−2 h−1) did not show a remarkable change, and they maintained a higher production rate than phytoplankton (annual average 9.0 ± 5.1 mg C m−2 h−1) throughout the year. The P-I curves from in situ experiments showed that the photosynthetic activity of microphytobenthos at the laboratory irradiance (250 μE m−2 s−1) was 56% of that at the maximum irradiance (1200 μE m−2 s−1) in situ. In the in situ experiments, the chlorophyll a concentration, photosynthetic rate, and activity of microphytobenthos varied greatly throughout the day, influenced by tidal submersion/emersion and daylight. From an analysis of these results, it is considered that microphytobenthos contributed greatly to primary production in this ecosystem throughout the year by adapting suitably to intertidal environments. The spatial and temporal variation of microphytobenthic biomass in the nearshore zone of Martel Inlet (King George Island, Antarctica) was estimated at several sites and depths (10–60 m), during three summer periods (1996/1997, 1997/1998, 2004/2005). The mean values were inversely related to the bathymetric gradient: higher ones at 10–20 m depth (136.2 ± 112.5 mg Chl a m−2, 261.7 ± 455.9 mg Phaeo m−2), intermediate at 20–30 m (55.6 ± 39.5 mg Chl a m−2, 108.8 ± 73.0 mg Phaeo m−2) and lower ones at 40–60 m (22.7 ± 23.7 mg Chl a m−2, 58.3 ± 38.9 mg Phaeo m−2). There was also a reduction in the Chl a/Phaeo ratio with depth, from 3.2 ± 3.2 (10–20 m) to 0.7 ± 1.0 (40–60 m), showing a higher contribution of senescent phytoplankton and/or macroalgae debris at the deeper sites and the limited light flux reaching the bottom. Horizontal differences found in the biomass throughout the inlet could not be clearly related to hydrodynamics or proximity to glaciers, but with sediment characteristics. An inter-summer variation was observed: the first summer presented the highest microphytobenthic biomass apparently related to more hydrodynamic conditions, which causes the deposition of allochthonous material.  相似文献

Periphyton (epilithon) gross primary production (GPP) was estimated using the DCMU-fluorescence method in the Yenisei River. In the unshaded littoral zone, chlorophyll a concentration (Chl a) and GPP value varied from 0.83 to 973.74 mg m−2and 2–304,425 O2 m−2 day−1 (0.64–95 133 mg C m−2 day−1), respectively. Positive significant correlation (r = 0.8) between daily GPP and periphyton Chl a was found. Average ratio GPP:Chl a for periphyton was 36.36 mg C mg Chl a m−2 day−1. The obtained GPP values for the Yenisei River have a high significant correlation with values predicted by a conventional empirical model for stream periphyton. We concluded that the DCMU-fluorescence method can be successfully used for measuring of gross primary production of stream phytoperiphyton at least as another useful tool for such studies.  相似文献

Gross primary production, community respiration and reaeration coefficient were determined during an annual cycle on the Viroin River (South Belgium), based on the daily variations of dissolved oxygen concentration. Reaeration coefficient remains remarkably constant (0.26 h−1) during the year in spite of discharge variations. The autotrophic community is dominated by ‘Ranunculus fluitans’. Primary production parallels the variations of total solar radiations. It ranges from 0 in winter to 8 g O2 m−2 d−1 in summer. In spring and summer, respiration variations parallel those of primary production (average value: 10 g O2 m−2 d−1); in the dry autumn, decomposition of dying macrophytes considerably enhances the community respiration (15 g O2 m−2 d−1). A P/R diagram is used to characterize the trophic state of the Viroin.  相似文献

Photosynthesis and respiration by the epilithic community on cobble in an arctic tundra stream, were estimated from oxygen production and consumption in short-term (4–12 h), light and dark, chamber incubations. Chlorophyll a was estimated at the end of each incubation by quantitatively removing the epilithon from the cobble. Fertilization of the river with phosphate alone moderately increased epilithic chlorophyll a, photosynthesis, and respiration. Fertilization with ammonium sulfate and phosphate, together, greatly increased each of these variables. Generally, under both control and fertilized conditions, epilithic chlorophyll a concentrations (mg m−2), photosynthesis, and respiration (mg O2 m−2, h−1) were higher in pools than in riffles. Under all conditions, the P/R ratio was consistent at ∼ 1.8 to 2.0. The vigor of epilithic algae in riffles, estimated from assimilation coefficients (mg O2 [mg Chl a]−1 h−1) was greater than the vigor of epilithic algae in pools. However, due to the greater accumulation of epilithic chlorophyll a in pools, total production (and respiration) in pools exceeded that in riffles. The epilithic community removed both ammonium and nitrate from water in chambers. Epilithic material, scoured by high discharge in response to storm events and suspended in the water column, removed ammonium and may have increased nitrate concentrations in bulk river water. However, these changes were small compared to the changes exerted by attached epilithon.  相似文献

The effect of ethylenediurea (EDU) was tested using the chlorophyll (Chl) a fluorescence transient analysis, performed with JIP-test, to assess ambient ozone (O3) effects on photosynthesis of adult trees under natural conditions. Twelve adult European ash (Fraxinus excelsior L.) trees, known to be sensitive or tolerant to O3, determined by presence symptomatic (S) or absence asymptomatic (AS) trees of foliar symptoms in previous years, were treated either with distilled water containing 450 g m−3 EDU or with distilled water. Once a month across the growing season [the accumulated exposure over a threshold of 40 nmol(O3) mol−1 was 32.49 μmol mol−1 h−1], Chl a fluorescence transients were measured in vivo on dark-adapted leaves of 1-year-old labeled shoots, from the lower crown part. Twenty-five parameters were calculated. The maximum quantum yield of primary photochemistry (ϕPo or Fv/Fm) did not differentiate between S-and AS-trees, while increased Chl content and de-excitation rates suggested compensation of O3 injury in S-trees. Seasonal reductions in absorbing fluxes and increase in heat and fluorescence dissipation processes was due to leaf ageing and drought, the latter suggesting water deficit influenced Chl a fluorescence stronger than ambient O3 exposure. AS-trees showed elevated probability of connectivity among photosystem 2 units, a mechanism to stimulate energy dissipation and reduce photo-oxidative injury. EDU prevented the inactivation of reaction centers. This slight effect does not warrant EDU as a tool to assess O3 effects on photosynthesis, while the JIP-test is suggested for a quantitative assessment in adult trees.  相似文献

Sensitivity of Metasequoia glyptostroboides to ozone stress   总被引:1,自引:1,他引:0
2-year-old seedlings of Metasequoia glyptostroboides were grown in open top chambers and exposed to four ozone concentrations [O3] (charcoal-filtered air, CF; 50, 100, and 200 mm3 m−3) for 25 d. Measurements of growth, leaf chlorophyll (Chl) content, and gas exchange parameters were made before and/or after O3 exposure. Leaf length, crown width, Chl a/b, net photosynthetic rate, stomatal conductance, and transpiration rate were significantly reduced at 100 and 200 mm3(O3) m−3. A remarkable decrease in stomatal conductance also occurred at 50 mm3(O3) m−3.  相似文献

Photosynthetic and respiratory activities at low light intensities (300 μE m−2 s−1) in the microbial mats of the Ebro Delta were measured by the oxygen exchange method in the laboratory. The response to H2S concentration, a significant factor in the dynamics of that ecosystem, was assessed. Total photosynthesis reached 23.78–28.17 μg O2 cm−2 h−1. Photosynthetic activity was not significantly different at the two temperatures tested. Respiratory activity reached a consumption of 6.95–8.56 μg O2 cm−2 h−1 at 25°C and 11.42–11.70 μg O2 cm−2 h−1 at 35°C. The Q10 value for respiration was 1.37–1.64. Oxygen production in Microcoleus chthonoplastes, the most abundant cyanobacterium in those microbial mats, was highly resistant to sulfide inhibition. Concentrations less than 0.02 mM sulfide did not affect the rate of photosynthesis. Concentrations up to 0.1 mM sulfide caused different degrees of partially reversible inhibition, with a maximum of 67% at 0.78 mM sulfide. Primary production (g C assimilated/m2/year) in those microbial mats was also assessed and compared with data from other ecosystems. Received: 24 October 1997 / Accepted: 18 December 1997  相似文献

The temporal dynamics and spatial distribution of microphytobenthic chlorophyll-a in the layer 0–1 cm were determined in the Western Scheldt estuary over the period 1991–1992. Connections between the annually averaged benthic chlorophyll-a and station elevation and sediment composition (as a measure of the hydrodynamic energy caused by currents and waves) were also examined.Microphytobenthic chlorophyll-a showed one main peak in early summer and a smaller peak in autumn. The mean chlorophyll-a concentration of 113 mg Chl-a m–2 in the upper centimeter is of the same order of magnitude as in other estuarine areas. The average annual primary production of the microphytobenthos has been estimated at 136 g C m–2 y–1 The primary production of sediment inhabiting microalgae is at least 17% of the total primary production in the estuary.Considerable differences in annually averaged chlorophyll-a emerges between the stations. These differences are related mainly to the interaction between station elevation and clay content of the sediment.  相似文献

An investigation into the changing phytoplankton biomass and total water column production during autumn sea ice formation in the eastern Weddell Sea, Antarctica showed reduced biomass concentrations and extremely low daily primary production. Mean chlorophyll-a concentration for the entire study period was extremely low, 0.15±0.01 mg.m−3 with a maximum of 0.35 mg.m−3 found along the first transect to the east of the grid. Areas of low biomass were identified as those either associated with heavy grazing or with deep mixing and corresponding low light levels. In most cases phytoplankton in the <20-μm size classes dominated. Integrated biomass to 100 m ranged from 7.1 to 28.0 mg.m−2 and correlated positively with surface chlorophyll-a concentrations. Mean PBmax (photosynthetic capacity) and αB (initial slope of the photosynthesis-irradiance curve) were 1.25±0.19 mgC. mgChla −1.h−1 and 0.042±0.009 mgC.mgChla −1.h−1.(μmol.m−2.s−1)−1 respectively. The mean index of photoadaptation,I k, was 32.2±4.0 μmol.m−2.s−1 and photoinhibition was found in all cases. Primary production was integrated to the critical depth (Z cr) at each production station and ranged from 15.6 to 41.5 mgC.m−2.d−1. It appears that, other than grazing intensity, the relationship between the critical depth and the mixing depth (Z mix) is an important factor as, ultimately, light availability due both to the late season and growing sea ice cover severely limits production during the austral autumn.  相似文献

The objective of this investigation was to analyze the primary production of the dominant hydrophytes by monitoring levels of organic matter and organic carbon and estimating photosynthetic potential via the total chlorophyll content. The survey was conducted in Lake Provala (Serbia) throughout the peak vegetation period of the year 2000. The contents of organic matter and organic carbon for Myriophyllum spicatum L. were 105.11 g m−2 and 73.66 g m−2, Nymphoides peltata (Gmel.) Kunt. were 95.51 g m−2 and 45.26 g m−2 and Ceratophyllum demersum L. were 52.17 g m−2 and 29.75 g m−2. Chlorophyll A (Chl a) and chlorophyll A+B (Chl a+b) pigments ranged from 1.54 mg g−1(Chl a) and 2.1 mg g−1(Chl a+b) in M. spicatum to 5.27 mg g−1(Chl a) and 7.53 mg g−1(Chl a+b) in C. demersum. At full leaf out, the latter aquatic plants exceeded 50% cover of the open water surface. All species achieved maximum growth in June, but significant differences in growth dynamics were observed. At the end of the vegetation period, these plants sink to the bottom and decompose  相似文献

The decrease of biodiversity related to the phenomena of global climate change is stimulating the scientific community towards a better understanding of the relationships between biodiversity and ecosystem functioning. In ecosystems where marked biodiversity changes occur at seasonal time scales, it is easier to relate them with ecosystem functioning. The objective of this work is to analyse the relationship between phytoplankton diversity and primary production in St. André coastal lagoon – SW Portugal. This lagoon is artificially opened to the sea every year in early spring, exhibiting a shift from a marine dominated to a low salinity ecosystem in winter. Data on salinity, temperature, nutrients, phytoplankton species composition, chlorophyll a (Chl a) concentration and primary production were analysed over a year. Modelling studies based on production-irradiance curves were also conducted. A total of 19 taxa were identified among diatoms, dinoflagellates and euglenophyceans, the less abundant group. Lowest diversities (Shannon–Wiener index) were observed just before the opening to the sea. Results show a negative correlation (p<0.05) between diversity and chlorophyll a (Chl a) concentration (0.2–40.3 mg Chl a m−3). Higher Chl a values corresponded to periods when the community was dominated by the dinoflagellate Prorocentrum minimum (>90% of cell abundance) and production was maximal (up to 234.8 mg C m−3 h−1). Maximal photosynthetic rates (Pmax) (2.0–22.5 mg C mg Chl a−1 h−1) were higher under lower Chl a concentrations. The results of this work suggest that decreases in diversity are associated with increases in biomass and production, whereas increases correspond to opposite trends. It is suggested that these trends, contrary to those observed in terrestrial and in some benthic ecosystems, may be a result of low habitat diversity in the water column and resulting competitive pressure. The occurrence of the highest photosynthetic rates when Chl a is low, under some of the highest diversities, suggests a more efficient use of irradiance under low biomass–high diversity conditions. Results suggest that this increased efficiency is not explained by potential reductions in nutrient limitation and intraspecific competition under lower biomasses and may be a result of niche complementarity.  相似文献

This investigation represents the first integrated study of primary production, nutrient dynamics and mineralisation in a northeastern fjord of Greenland. The data presented represent conditions and activities during the early summer thaw (first 2 weeks of July). Primary production (5.3 mmol C m−2 d−2) and chlorophylla (4.1 μg 1−1) values were found to be comparable with measurements from other Arctic regions. Water column N-fixation rates were low (<0.02 μmol N m−1 d−1), but comparable with other estuarine systems. Despite a constant low temperature in the bottom waters (-1.0 to -1.8°C), a high sedimentary O2 uptake (740 μmol m−2 h−2) was observed and was primarily caused by the presence of benthic infauna. Bioturbation by benthic infauna was reflected in both homogeneous210Pb and137Cs profiles in the upper 4 cm of the sediment. Permanent accumulation within Young Sound was measured to 0.12 cm/year corresponding to 153 mmol C m−2 year−1 and 15 mmol N m−2 year−1. Rates of nitrification (22 μmol m−2 h−1) and denitrification (9 μmol m−2 h−1) were comparable with rates reported for other sediments with much higher environmental temperatures. Suphate reduction rates integrated over the upper 12 cm of the sediment were calculated to be 44 μmol m−2h−1.  相似文献

Fluxes of oxygen, nitrogen and phosphorus were determined in two areas of the Sacca di Goro lagoon, at a site influenced by the farming of the mussel Mytilus galloprovincialis and a control site. Mussel farming induced intense biodeposition of organic matter to the underlying sediments, which stimulated sediment oxygen demand, and inorganic nitrogen and phosphorus regeneration rates compared to the nearby control station. Overall benthic fluxes (–11.4 ± 6.5 mmol O2 m−2 h−1; 1.59 ± 0.47 mmol NH4+ m−2 h−1 and 94 ± 42 μmol PO43− m−2 h−1) at the mussel farm are amongst the highest ever recorded for an aquaculture impacted area and question the belief that farming of filter-feeding bivalves has inherently lower impacts than finfish farming. In situ incubations of intact mussel ropes demonstrated that the mussel rope community was an enormous sink for oxygen and particulate organic matter, and an equally large source of dissolved inorganic nitrogen and phosphate to the water column. Overall, a one meter square area of␣mussel farm (mussel ropes and underlying sediment) was estimated to have an oxygen demand of 46.8 mmol m2 h−1 and to regenerate inorganic nitrogen and phosphorus at rates of 8.5 and 0.3 mmol m2 h−1, with the mussel ropes accounting for between 70 and more than 90% of the overall oxygen and nutrient fluxes. Even taking into account that within the farmed area of the Sacca di Goro lagoon, there are 15–20 m−2 of open water for each one covered with mussel ropes, the mussel ropes would account for a large and often dominant part of overall oxygen and nutrient fluxes. These results demonstrate that it is essential to take into account the activity of the cultivated organisms and their epiphytic community when assessing the impacts of shellfish farming. Overall, whilst grazing by the mussel rope community could act as a top-down control on the phytoplankton, most of the ingested organic matter is rapidly recycled to the water column as inorganic nutrients, which would be expected to stimulate phytoplankton growth. Consequently, the net effect of the mussel farming on phytoplankton dynamics, may be to increase phytoplankton turnover and overall production, rather than to limit phytoplankton biomass.  相似文献

Shallow lakes often alternate between two possible states: one clear with submerged macrophytes, and another one turbid, dominated by phytoplankton. A third type of shallow lakes, the inorganic turbid, result from high contents of suspended inorganic material, and is characterized by low phytoplankton biomass and macrophytes absence. In our survey, the structure and photosynthetic properties (based on 14C method) of phytoplankton were related to environmental conditions in these three types of lakes in the Pampa Plain. The underwater light climate was characterized. Clear-vegetated lakes were more transparent (K d 4.5–7.7 m−1), had high DOC concentrations (>45 mg l−1), low phytoplankton Chl a (1.6–2.7 μg l−1) dominated by nanoflagellates. Phytoplankton productivity and photosynthetic efficiency (α ~ 0.03 mgC mgChla −1 h−1 W−1 m2) were relatively low. Inorganic-turbid lakes showed highest K d values (59.8–61.4 m−1), lowest phytoplankton densities (dominated by Bacillariophyta), and Chl a ranged from 14.6 to 18.3 μg l−1. Phytoplankton-turbid lakes showed, in general, high K d (4.9–58.5 m−1) due to their high phytoplankton abundances. These lakes exhibited the highest Chl a values (14.2–125.7 μg l−1), and the highest productivities and efficiencies (maximum 0.56 mgC mgChla −1 h−1 W−1 m2). Autotrophic picoplankton abundance, dominated by ficocianine-rich picocyanobacteria, differed among the shallow lakes independently of their type (0.086 × 105–41.7 × 105 cells ml−1). This article provides a complete characterization of phytoplankton structure (all size fractions), and primary production of the three types of lakes from the Pampa Plain, one of the richest areas in shallow lakes from South America. The joint effects of 0.5 M NaCl and light of different intensities on the activity of the photosynthetic apparatus and ATP content in cells of the katG mutant of cyanobacterium Synechocystis sp. PCC 6803 have been studied. The mutant demonstrated a higher photoinhibition rate and a slower rate of recovery compared with the wild type, as shown by measurements of the CO2-dependent O2 production and delayed fluorescence of Chl a. The presence of 0.5 M NaCl in the incubation medium caused equal photoinhibition of the photosynthetic apparatus at I = 1200 μE m−2 s−1 in the mutant and wild-type cells. At I = 2400 μE m−2 s−1, we observed stronger inhibition and slower recovery of the photosynthetic apparatus in the katG mutant than in wild-type cells. The data obtained evidence an important role of catalase-peroxidase in the system of reparation of the photosynthetic apparatus damaged by high-intensity light, especially at the background of NaCl stress.  相似文献

In spring 2005, monthly sampling was carried out at a sublittoral site near Tautra Island. Microphytobenthic identification, abundance (ABU), and biomass (BIOM), were performed by microscopic analyses. Bacillariophyceae accounted for 67% of the total ABU, and phytoflagellates constituted 30%. The diatom floristic list consisted of 38 genera and 94 species. Intact light‐harvesting pigments chl a, chl c, and fucoxanthin and their derivatives were identified and quantified by HPLC. Photoprotective carotenoids were also observed (only as diadinoxanthin; no diatoxanthin was detected). Average fucoxanthin content was 4.57 ± 0.45 μg fucoxanthin · g sediment dry mass?1, while the mean chl a concentration was 2.48 ± 0.15 μg · g?1 dry mass. Both the high fucoxanthin:chl a ratio (considering nondegraded forms) and low amounts of photoprotective carotenoids indicated that the benthic microalgal community was adapted to low light. Microphytobenthic primary production was estimated in situ (MPPs, from 0.15 to 1.28 mg C · m?2 · h?1) and in the laboratory (MPPp, from 6.79 to 34.70 mg C · m?2 · h?1 under light saturation) as 14C assimilation; in April it was additionally estimated from O2‐microelectrode studies (MPPO2) along with the community respiration. MPPO2 and the community respiration equaled 22.9 ± 7.0 and 7.4 ± 1.8 mg C · m?2 · h?1, respectively. A doubling of BIOM from April to June in parallel with a decreasing photosynthetic activity per unit chl a led us to suggest that the microphytobenthic community was sustained by heterotrophic metabolism during this period.  相似文献

The aim of this work was to assess the effect of leaf thickness, leaf succulence (LS), specific leaf area (SLA), specific leaf mass (Ws) and leaf water content (LWC) on chlorophyll (Chl) meter values in six Amazonian tree species (Carapa guianensis, Ceiba pentandra, Cynometra spruceana, Pithecolobium inaequale, Scleronema micranthum and Swietenia macrophylla). We also tested the accuracy of a general calibration equation to convert Minolta Chl meter (SPAD-502) readings into absolute Chl content. On average, SPAD values (x) increased with fresh leaf thickness (FLT [μm] = 153.9 + 0.98 x, r 2 = 0.06**), dry leaf thickness (DLT [μm] = 49.50 + 1.28 x, r 2 = 0.16**), specific leaf mass (Ws [g (DM) m−2] = 6.73 + 1.31 x, r 2 = 0.43**), and leaf succulence (LS [g(FM)] m−2 = 94.2 + 1.58 x, r 2 = 0.19**). However, a negative relationship was found between SPAD values and either specific leaf area [SLA (m2 kg−1) = 35.1 − 0.37 x, r 2 = 0.38**] or the leaf water content (LWC [%]= 80.0 − 0.42 x, r 2 = 0.58**). Leaf Chl contents predicted by the general calibration equation significantly differed (p<0.01) from those estimated by species-specific calibration equations. We conclude that to improve the accuracy of the SPAD-502 leaf thickness and LWC should be taken into account when calibration equations are to be obtained to convert SPAD values into absolute Chl content.  相似文献

Primary production rates, chlorophyll and phytoplankton biovolume were measured monthly from April 2003 to November 2004 in Lake Tana, a large tropical lake in the highlands of Ethiopia. The lake is characterised by low nutrient concentrations, and a low water transparency due to high silt load of the inflowing rivers during the rainy seasons (May–November) and daily resuspension of sediments in the inshore zone. The mean chlorophyll-a concentrations varied seasonally and ranged from 2.6 mg m−3 to 8.5 mg m−3 (mean: 4.5 mg m−3) in the offshore zone. Primary production was measured using the light–dark bottles technique. We incubated only at three depths, i.e. 0.6, 1.2 and 1.8 m. Therefore, we may have missed a substantial part of the depth production profile and probably also frequently missed P max. Gross primary production in the openwater averaged 2.43 g O2 m−2 d−1 and ranged between 0.03 g O2 m−2 d−1 and 10.2 g O2 m−2 d−1; production was significantly higher in the inshore zone. The highest production rates were observed in the post-rainy season (Oct–Nov), which coincided with a bloom of Microcystis and higher chlorophyll levels. This seasonal high production is probably caused by a relatively high nutrient availability in combination with favourable light conditions. The gross primary production rates of L. Tana are among the lowest compared with other tropical lakes. This will be partly the result of our underestimation of gross primary production by often missing P max. Another cause is the oligotrophic nature of the lake in combination with its relatively low water transparency. The gross primary production per unit chlorophyll in the openwater zone was in the same range as in 30 other tropical lakes and reservoirs. The higher primary production in the inshore zone is probably the result of the daily water column mixing (Z mixZ t) in this area, enhancing nutrient recycling. A large proportion of the annual primary production is realised in one of the four seasons only. This productive post-rainy season is relatively short (2 months) and therefore efficiency of transfer of matter between the first and second trophic level of the Lake ecosystem will be poor.  相似文献
