Summary

Individuals of the sea star genus Leptasterias from the Monterey Peninsula, California, were maintained for 34 months under two contrasting regimes of seasonally changing photoperiod. In one regime the lights turned on and off in phase with local sunrise and sunset; in the other the daily photoperiod was kept 6 months out of phase with ambient photoperiods. Annual cycles of feeding, gametogenesis, and embryo brooding of the out-of-phase animals were all shifted out of phase with respect to those of the in-phase animals. These small, relatively hardy sea stars appear well suited for more detailed analyses of photoperiodism in asteroids.  相似文献

The density of recruits of scleractinian corals on settlement plates at Lord Howe Island, a small isolated sub-tropical island 630 km off the Australian coastline, was within the range of values reported for comparable studies on the Great Barrier Reef. However, there was a difference in the relative abundance of taxonomic groups, with recruitment at Lord Howe Island during the summer of 1990/91 dominated by corals from the Family Pocilloporidae, Family Poritidae, and sub-genus Acropora (Isopora) (in order of abundance). By contrast, on the Great Barrier Reef, recruits are generally predominantly species from the Family Acroporidae (other than the Acropora (Isopora) group). Both the recruits and the established coral communities at Lord Howe Island are dominanted by corals which release brooded planulae, as opposed to the pattern of mass-spawning with external fertilisation more typical of Great Barrier Reef corals. I hypothesise that the release of brooded planulae would be advantageous in an isolated reef community because (a) brooded larvae can travel large distances and survive the journey to the isolated reef and/or (b) brooded larvae have a shorter period before they are competent to settle and are therefore more likely to be retained on the parental reef once a population has been established.  相似文献

Synopsis The painted greenling, Oxylebius pictus, a hexagrammid fish of shallow, northeastern Pacific rocky habitats was observed and collected near the center of its range at Monterey Bay, California, and near the northern limit of its distribution at Puget Sound. Life history characteristics were compared for breeding stocks from the two areas. Mean and maximum adult body sizes (lengths and wet weights) and longevities of both sexes are greater at Puget Sound. Also, both males and females reach sexual maturity at a smaller body length at Monterey. Age group 0 and I juveniles are twice as abundant as adults at Monterey but rare at Puget Sound. Monterey females have greater relative fecundities. Egg development rates are similar at equivalent temperatures; eggs are smaller, however, at Monterey, and thus embryos are smaller at hatching. Length increase is faster for Puget Sound juveniles; adult fish in the two areas grow in length at comparable rates, although weight per body length is consistently greater for Monterey fish. These findings reflect a poorer survivorship at Monterey, where natural predation on fertilized eggs and the mortality rates of adult males are greater.  相似文献

A population of the coral Pocillopora damicornis was examined for 12 months to investigate whether different reproductive activities in the corals affected patcerns of energy allocation. Growth, the amount of lipid in the tissue, and reproductive activity were measured simultaneously at fortnightly intervals during the summer months when production of planulae was expected, and monthly for the cooler period of the year. Two group of corals could be identified: those which produced brooded larvae and formed ova and sperm during gametogenesis, and those which did not brood larvae and produced only sperm. Although they exhibited no morphological differences, these two groups displayed different patterns of energy allocation to growth, reproduction and lipid storage. Corals which did not produce brooded larvae grew one and a half times faster and had more lipid for storage after reproduction than those which produced brooded larvae. Corals that brooded larvae had more structural lipid before release of larvae than those without brooded larvae, reflecting a greater volume of reproductive material rich in lipid. These results demonstrate a substantial cost of reproduction since corals which did not produce brooded larvae and ova put more resources into grwoth and storage of lipid.  相似文献

Summary

Monthly samples of the shore crab Pachygrapsus transversus from two distinct annual periods showed that ovigerous females are present throughout the year in the population. However, the relative ovigerous abundance of specimens among sexually mature changes from less than 10% during the winter months to almost 80% in summer. Linear correlations for each year revealed that both temperature and photoperiod were positively associated with relative abundance of ovigerous females. Multiple regression analyses suggested that photoperiod was the main factor affecting breeding in this species. Timing of observed reproductive pattern may enhance larval survival because of particular oceanographic conditions in the study region and favor early juvenile development due to certain species-specific growth features.  相似文献

Bone-eating worms of the genus Osedax colonized and grew on cow bones deployed at depths ranging from 385 to 2893m in Monterey Bay, California. Colonization occurred as rapidly as two months following deployment of the cow bones, similar to the time it takes to colonize exposed whalebones. Some Osedax females found on the cow bones were producing eggs and some hosted dwarf males in their tubes. Morphological and molecular examinations of these worms confirmed the presence of six Osedax species, out of the eight species presently known from Monterey Bay. The ability of Osedax species to colonize, grow and reproduce on cow bones challenges previous notions that these worms are 'whale-fall specialists.'  相似文献

Summary

Armadillidium vulgare females of ten geographical origins were reared under various photoperiodic regimes. Long days stimulated reproduction in all the strains, but, whatever the conditions, females originating from high latitudes began to breed later than ones from low latitudes and, under natural photoperiod of Poitiers, the lag time was increased, more or less linearly, by 2 days per degree of latitude. The ability to remain in reproduction, after a first brood, was also related to the latitudinal origin of the strain. The onset of reproduction in the Sucre strain (Bolivia) was very late in respect to the latitude of the original site; the high altitude of Sucre may explain the divergence from the common rule. Reproduction characteristics of each strain persist in the females born and reared in the laboratory for several generations. This stability makes it possible to study the genetic determination of the photoperiodic responses. One genie system probably controls induction and maintenance of reproduction. This system involves maternal sex linked gene(s) (carried by W heterochromosome) and also autosomal genes with additive effects.  相似文献

Theory predicts that monogamy is adaptive in resource-specialist symbiotic crustaceans inhabiting relatively small and morphologically simple hosts in tropical environments where predation risk away from hosts is high. We tested this prediction in Pontonia manningi, a hyper-symbiotic shrimp that dwells in the mantle cavity of the Atlantic winged oyster Pteria colymbus that, in turn, infects gorgonians from the genus Pseudopterogorgia in the Caribbean Sea. In agreement with theory, P. manningi were found dwelling as heterosexual pairs in oysters more frequently than expected by chance alone. Males and females also inhabited the same host individual independent of the female gravid condition or of the developmental stage of brooded embryos. While the observations above argue in favor of monogamy in P. manningi, there is evidence to suggest that males of the studied species are moderately promiscuous. That females found living solitary in oysters most often brooded embryos, and that males allocated more to weaponry (major claw size) than females at any given size suggest that males might be roaming among host individuals in search of and, fighting for, receptive females. All available information depicts a rather complex mating system in P. manningi: primarily monogamous but with moderately promiscuous males.  相似文献

Capsule Evidence for extension of breeding seasons in Song Thrushes and Blackbirds (multiple‐brooded species) and shortening in Fieldfares (a single‐brooded species).

Aims To analyse breeding data from central Europe during 1964–2006 in relation to climatic conditions operating at breeding and wintering grounds, and to compare breeding phenology in urban and rural habitats.

Methods Using chick ringing data we evaluated long‐term changes in breeding phenology of Fieldfares Turdus pilaris, Song Thrushes T. philomelos and Common Blackbirds T. merula. Changes in phenology were analysed for the 5th percentile, median, 95th percentile, inter‐quantile range (IQR) and brood size.

Results All thrushes showed consistent trends towards earlier onset of breeding. However, there was a contrasting pattern in the later phenological characteristics (median, 95th percentile and IQR) that were associated with single‐ versus multiple‐brooded species. The single‐brooded Fieldfares revealed an advancing trend in all phenological phases, which caused shortening of its breeding period. In contrast, the multiple‐brooded Song Thrushes and Blackbirds delayed both medians and the 95th percentiles of breeding dates leading to extension of their breeding seasons. Temperatures at both wintering and breeding grounds were generally negatively associated with the onset of breeding. Urban birds bred significantly earlier than their rural conspecifics, but brood sizes did not differ.

Conclusion Multiple‐brooded species may respond differently to increasing spring temperatures than single‐brooded species.  相似文献

Abstract. Although the reproductive biology and early life‐history stages of deep‐sea corals are poorly understood, such data are crucial for their conservation and management. Here, we describe the timing of larval release, planula behavior, metamorphosis, settlement, and early juvenile growth of two species of deep‐sea soft corals from the northwest Atlantic. Live colonies of Gersemia fruticosa maintained under flow‐through laboratory conditions released 79 planulae (1.5–2.5 mm long) between April and early June 2007. Peak planulation in G. fruticosa coincided with peaks in the chlorophyll concentration and deposition rates of planktic matter. Metamorphosis and settlement occurred 3–70 d post‐release. The eight primary mesenteries typically appeared within 24 h, and primary polyps grew to a height of ~6–10 mm and a stalk diameter of ~1 mm within 2–3 months. Planulae of Duva florida (1.5–2.5 mm long) were extracted surgically from several colonies and were successfully reared in culture. Primary polyps reached a height of ~3–4 mm within 2–3 months. No budding of primary polyps was observed in either species over 11–13 months of monitoring, suggesting a very slow growth rate.  相似文献

Summary

Individuals of the sea star Asterias vulgaris from New Hampshire were maintained under two contrasting regimes of seasonally changing photoperiod. In one regime the lights turned on and off in phase with local sunrise and sunset; in the other, the daily photoperiod was kept 6 months out of phase with ambient photo- period. When dissected after being maintained for 18 months, the gametogenic condition of the out-of-phase animals was found to be 6 months out of phase with that of the in-phase animals. This experiment demonstrates that photoperiodic regulation of reproduction is important even in marine animals that normally experience marked seasonal changes in sea temperature.  相似文献

The response to photoperiod of field-collected Aelia acuminata was studied by exposing insects to three photoperiodic regimes. After the completion of diapause the insects do not respond to photoperiod: in mid-February the length of the pre-oviposition period is the same under both long and short photoperiods. After the onset of oviposition, insects again become responsive to photoperiod regardless of the time of year: under long day, oviposition lasts until death, whereas under short day the females cease oviposition after about 3 weeks. After a further 2 or 3 months without ovipositing, these females which are still experiencing short-day conditions resume reproduction for a further 4–7 weeks and long-lived individuals have three oviposition periods. A regulatory mechanism is suggested for the alternation between oviposition and diapause.  相似文献

1. Although there is a great deal of theoretical and empirical data about the life history responses of time constraints in organisms, little is known about the latitude‐compensating mechanism that enables northern populations' developmental rates to compensate for latitude. To investigate the importance of photoperiod on development, offspring of the obligatory univoltine damselfly Lestes sponsa from two populations at different latitudes (53°N and 63°N) were raised in a common laboratory environment at both northern and southern photoperiods that corresponded to the sites of collection. 2. Egg development time was shorter under northern photoperiod regimes for both populations. However, the northern latitude population showed a higher phenotypic plasticity response to photoperiod compared with the southern latitude population, suggesting a genetic difference in egg development time in response to photoperiod. 3. Larvae from both latitudes expressed shorter larval development time and faster growth rates under northern photoperiod regimes. There was no difference in phenotypic plastic response between northern and southern latitude populations with regard to development time. 4. Data on field collected adults showed that adult sizes decreased with an increase in latitude. This adult size difference was a genetically fixed trait, as the same size difference between populations was also found when larvae were reared in the laboratory. 5. The results suggest phenotypic plasticity responses in life history traits to photoperiod, but also genetic differences between north and south latitude populations in response to photoperiod, which indicates the presence of a latitudinal compensating mechanism that is triggered by a photoperiod.  相似文献

In the laboratory, blood feeding rates, oögenesis and fat body development were utilized to assess the effects of photoperiod and temperature in the conditioning of adult female Culiseta inornata for aestivation. Long-day (16L:8D) and short-day (8L:16D) photoperiods were examined in combination with temperatures of 15°C, 20°C, and 25°C. All tested individuals were reared from egg to adult under one of six possible regimes.Blood feeding occurred in approximately 60% of the females subjected to short-day conditions. Females subjected to long-day regimes exhibited gonotrophic concordance (the inhibition of blood feeding), evidenced by a decrease in overall blood-feeding rate to 20%. Inhibition of blood feeding by long-day females decreased in a linear fashion with increasing temperature. No interaction of the effects of photoperiod and temperature upon blood feeding was apparent. Examination of the ovarioles of post-blood feeding females, reared under each of the above conditions, revealed no evidence of gonotrophic dissociation (the inhibition of oögenesis despite continued blood feeding).Fat body hypertrophy occurred in females reared under long-day conditions, whereas hypotrophy of this tissue was apparent in short-day females. No significant difference in fat body development occurred between parous and nulliparous females reared under long-day photoperiod conditions. Short-day blood-fed females reared at 15°C deposited a significantly greater amount of fat than short-day blood fed females reared at 20° and 25°C, and short-day nonbloodfed females reared at 15°, 20°, and 25°C. The primary stimulus for fat body hypertrophy appears to be long-day photoperiod conditions. Temperature exerted little discernible effect upon this process, and there was no interaction between the effects of photoperiod and temperature upon the degree of fat body development.  相似文献

Larval release patterns in brachyuran crabs are often synchronized with environmental cycles. While previous studies have focused extensively on supratidal and intertidal taxa, there have been relatively few investigations of subtidal species. This study examined patterns of larval release by the Florida stone crab, Menippe mercenaria, from three different tidal regimes. Ovigerous stone crabs were collected from Sebastian Inlet on the east coast of Florida, Tampa Bay on the west coast of Florida, and the Florida Keys. Patterns of larval release were monitored in the laboratory in relation to local tidal and diel cycles. Results showed a significant diel pattern in initiation of hatching by crabs from each of three study areas. Larval release consistently occurred during the diurnal phase despite the maintenance of females in constant laboratory conditions for up to 96 h prior to hatching. This implies that release may be controlled by a circadian clock. Patterns of release by stone crabs in relation to tidal cycle were more variable. Larval release by females from populations near Tampa Bay and Sebastian Inlet were not synchronized with the tides, whereas females collected from the Florida Keys exhibited a pattern that was strongly related to tidal cycle. These results may be explained by differences in tidal amplitude at the three sampling locations.  相似文献

Reproductive timing in corals is associated with environmental variables including temperature, lunar periodicity, and seasonality. Although it is clear that these variables are interrelated, it remains unknown if one variable in particular acts as the proximate signaler for gamete and or larval release. Furthermore, in an era of global warming, the degree to which increases in ocean temperatures will disrupt normal reproductive patterns in corals remains unknown. Pocillopora damicornis, a brooding coral widely distributed in the Indo-Pacific, has been the subject of multiple reproductive ecology studies that show correlations between temperature, lunar periodicity, and reproductive timing. However, to date, no study has empirically measured changes in reproductive timing associated with increased seawater temperature. In this study, the effect of increased seawater temperature on the timing of planula release was examined during the lunar cycles of March and June 2012. Twelve brooding corals were removed from Hobihu reef in Nanwan Bay, southern Taiwan and placed in 23 and 28°C controlled temperature treatment tanks. For both seasons, the timing of planulation was found to be plastic, with the high temperature treatment resulting in significantly earlier peaks of planula release compared to the low temperature treatment. This suggests that temperature alone can influence the timing of larval release in Pocillopora damicornis in Nanwan Bay. Therefore, it is expected that continued increases in ocean temperature will result in earlier timing of reproductive events in corals, which may lead to either variations in reproductive success or phenotypic acclimatization.  相似文献

Temporal and spatial dynamics of ammonia-oxidizing bacteria (AOB) were examined using genes encoding 16S rRNA and ammonia monooxygenase subunit A (AmoA) in Monterey Bay, Calif. Samples were collected from three depths in the water column on four dates at one mid-bay station. Diversity estimators for the two genes showed a strong positive correlation, indicating that overlapping bacterial populations had been sampled by both sets of clone libraries. Some samples that were separated by only 15 m in depth had less genetic similarity than samples that were collected from the same depth months apart. Clone libraries from the Monterey Bay AOB community were dominated by Nitrosospira-like sequences and clearly differentiated from the adjacent AOB community in Elkhorn Slough. Many Monterey Bay clones clustered with previously identified 16S rRNA and amoA groups composed entirely of marine sequences, supporting the hypothesis that these groups are specific to the marine environment and are dominant marine AOB. In addition, novel, phylogenetically distinct groups of AOB sequences were identified and compared to sequences in the database. Only one cluster of gammaproteobacterial AOB was detected using 16S rRNA genes. Although significant genetic variation was detected in AOB populations from both vertical and temporal samples, no significant correlation was detected between diversity and environmental variables or the rate of nitrification.  相似文献

ABSTRACT

Internal embryonic brooding has been suggested as an adaptation to enhance reproductive success in minute gastropods. It is rare in vetigastropods, previously known in only two species of Spectamen Iredale, 1924 (Solariellidae) from South Africa. Herein it is confirmed in the temperate Australian micro-snail Tricolia rosea (Angas, 1867), with up to 46 embryos observed within a gravid female. Embryos are brooded to an advanced stage, possessing a translucent, calcified shell and a calcified operculum. The initial protoconch is colourless, spirally sculptured and delineated by a consistent axial demarcation at the 0.75 whorl mark, when it measures 320?µm across. Beyond this, the second part of the protoconch is tinted pink, the strong spiral sculpture continues but the ribs and interstices are broader, with smoother surface microsculpture. At the 1.1 to 1.125 whorl mark the protoconch measures 400?µm across when transition to smooth teleoconch sculpture occurs. No brooded embryos possessed teleoconch sculpture. The potential relationship of protoconch morphology to embryonic development, hatching, feeding and release are considered. The mechanism of fertilisation is unknown, but embryos in a brood are at the same developmental stage. Unanswered questions in embryonic development and problems with protoconch terminologies in vetigastropods are also discussed.  相似文献
