In this article we investigate the direct and correlated responses to selection for developmental time in order to discern differences between lines in several preadult and adult life history traits of Acanthoscelides obtectus (Coleoptera, Bruchidae). Selection for fast development was about five times as effective as selection for slow development, as judged by realized heritabilities. The correlated responses on the following life‐history traits were studied: egg size, hatching success, embryonic developmental time, egg‐to‐adult viability, body weight, first day of egg laying, total fecundity, and longevity. Analyses of the terminal generation of selection showed that all life history traits examined, except for hatching success, were affected by selection. The findings suggest that body weight, total fecundity, and longevity traded off to preadult developmental time. Unlike the adult traits, none of the preadult traits showed negative correlations with developmental time. We also present data concerning the underlying genetic basis that produces changes in preadult developmental time, body weight, and egg‐to‐adult viability in the lines selected for fast and slow preadult developmental time. Additive‐dominance genetic architecture for both preadult developmental time and body weight was found. In addition, it appears that the responses to selection for preadult developmental time involved between 10 and 28 loci, which were correlated with at least one to four genes for body weight. Epistasis makes a significant contribution to genetic divergence between fast and slow selected lines only with respect to preadult viability. The observed levels of dominance and epistasis underscore the important role of nonadditive genetic effects to the adaptive diversifications of bean weevil populations.  相似文献

Laboratory studies on Drosophila have revealed that resistance to one environmental stress often correlates with resistance to other stresses. There is also evidence on genetic correlations between stress resistance, longevity and other fitness-related traits. The present work investigates these associations using artificial selection in Drosophila melanogaster. Adult flies were selected for increased survival after severe cold, heat, desiccation and starvation stresses as well as increased heat-knockdown time and lifespan (CS, HS, DS, SS, KS and LS line sets, respectively). The number of selection generations was 11 for LS, 27 for SS and 21 for other lines, with selection intensity being around 0.80. For each set of lines, the five stress-resistance parameters mentioned above as well as longevity (in a nonstressful environment) were estimated. In addition, preadult developmental time, early age productivity and thorax length were examined in all lines reared under nonstressful conditions. Comparing the selection lines with unselected control revealed clear-cut direct selection responses for the stress-resistance traits. Starvation resistance increased as correlated response in all sets of selection lines, with the exception of HS. Positive correlated responses were also found for survival after cold shock (HS and DS) and heat shock (KS and DS). With regard to values of resistance across different stress assays, the HS and KS lines were most similar. The resistance values of the SS lines were close to those of the LS lines and tended to be the lowest among all selection lines. Developmental time was extended in the SS and KS lines, whereas the LS lines showed a reduction in thorax length. The results indicate a possibility of different multiple-stress-resistance mechanisms for the examined traits and fitness costs associated with stress resistance and longevity.  相似文献

A selection experiment using Drosophila melanogaster revealed a strong trade-off between adult weight and larval development time (LDT), supporting the view that antagonistic pleiotropy for these two fitness traits determines mean adult size. Two experimental lines of flies were selected for a shorter LDT (measured from egg laying to pupation). After 15 generations LDT was reduced by an average of 7.9%. The response appeared to be controlled primarily by autosomal loci. A correlated response to the selection was a reduction in adult dry weight: individuals from the selected populations were on average 15.1% lighter than the controls. The lighter females of the selected lines showed a 35% drop in fecundity, but no change in longevity. Thus, there is no direct relationship between LDT and adult longevity. The genetic correlation between weight and LDT, as measured from their joint response to selection, was 0.86. Although there was weak evidence for dominance in LDT, there was none for weight, making it unlikely that selection acting on this antagonistic pleiotropy could lead to a stable polymorphism. In all lines, sex differences in weight violated expectations based on intrasex genetic correlations: Females, being larger than males, ought to require a longer LDT, whereas there was a slight trend in the opposite direction. Because the sexual dimorphism in size was not significantly altered by selection, it appears that the controlling loci are either invariant or have very limited pleiotropic effect on developmental time. It is suggested that they probably control some intrinsic, energy-intensive developmental process in males.  相似文献

This study assessed the effects of different farming systems, namely woodlot (WL), alley farming (AL), conventional tillage (CT) and natural fallow (NF) on the variability of organic carbon (OC) content and mean weight diameter (MWD) of a degraded Ferric Acrisol in the sub-humid zone of Ghana. The soils under woodlot accumulated the highest amount of organic carbon (18.6 g kg–1) with the least spatial variability apparently due to the greater additions of litter and minimum tillage. The conventionally tilled soil had the least OC content (13.1 g kg–1). Similar to the OC content, the woodlot soils also had the highest aggregate stability (MWD = 1.78 mm) and the least spatial variability. The stability of soil aggregates under the farming systems was greatly influenced by OC content; there was a good correlation between OC and MWD (r > 0.62**). Correlograms showed that OC and MWD are space dependent. The correlation length for OC under the different farming systems followed the order WL > NF > AL > CT, indicating that WL ensured a greater uniform distribution soil organic matter. The spatial distribution in MWD followed the same trend observed for OC. The MWD in the other farming systems was poorly related from point to point with shorter k-values, suggesting lack of uniformity due to low accumulation of OC. Generally, the woodlot system appeared to be a better, low-input restorer of soil productivity.  相似文献

We assessed the indirect response of longevity in lines selected for wing length (WL) and developmental time (DT). Longevity in selection lines was compared to laboratory control lines and the offspring of recently collected females. Wild flies (W lines), flies from lines selected for fast development (F lines), and for fast development and large wing length (L lines) outlived control laboratory lines (C lines) and lines selected for fast development and short wing (S lines). The decline in longevity in S lines is in line with the idea that body size and longevity are correlated and may be the result of the fixation of alleles at loci affecting pleiotropically the two traits under selection and longevity. In addition, inbreeding and artificial selection affected the correlation between wing length and longevity that occurs in natural populations of Drosophila buzzatii, suggesting that correlations between traits are not a perdurable feature in a population.  相似文献

When male mice from inbred PHH (sex ratio .535) and PHL (.435) are mated to females of various inbred lines, the sex ratio follows the male parent. The sex ratios from litters sired by reciprocal cross F1 males (letting A represent a set of autosomes) are 0.510 from AH/AL, XL/YH and 0.469 from AH/AL, XH/YL. The difference is statistically significant but only half the difference between pure strains. The paternal effect, presumably due to the Y, persists in progeny of the two kinds of F2 males. In backcrosses to the female parent, resulting finally in AH/AH, XH/YL and AL/AL, XL/YH, and in outcrosses, the effect of the Y chromosome does not persist, indicating that neither the Y alone, nor the autosomes alone, will cause the sex ratio to depart significantly from equality of sexes. When pairs of males in all possible combinations were presented with C57BL/6 females mating success gave the following ranking: AH-YL, AL-YL, AH-YH, AL-YH. The combination of autosomes from PHH and Y-chromosome from PHL seems to confer the greatest competitive advantage.  相似文献

Previously, inducing inactivity for 53 h after 21 days of voluntary running resulted in a 25 and 48% increase in epididymal and omental fat pad weights, respectively, while rats continued to eat more than a group that never had access to a running wheel (J Physiol 565: 911-925, 2005). We wanted to test the hypothesis that inactivity, independent of excessive caloric intake, could induce an increase in fat pad mass. Twenty-one-day-old rats were given access to voluntary running wheels for 42-43 days so that they were running approximately 9 km/day in the last week of running, after which wheels were locked for 5, 53, or 173 h (WL5, WL53, WL173) before the rats were killed. During the 53 and 173 h of inactivity, one group of animals was pair fed (PF) to match sedentary controls, whereas the other continued to eat ad libitum (AL). Epididymal and retroperitoneal fat masses were significantly increased in the WL173-PF vs. the WL5 group, whereas epididymal, perirenal, and retroperitoneal fat masses were all significantly increased in the WL173-AL group compared with the WL5 group. Additionally, hyperplasia, and not hypertrophy, of the epididymal fat mass was responsible for the increase at WL173-AL as demonstrated by a significant increase in cell number vs. WL5, with no change in cell diameter or volume. Thus two important findings have been elucidated: 1) increases in measured abdominal fat masses occur in both AL and PF groups at WL173, and 2) adipocyte expansion via hyperplasia occurred with an ad libitum diet following cessation of voluntary running.  相似文献

Summary Two lines of Tribolium castaneum were selected in each of three replicates for egg laying between 7 and 11 days after adult emergency and for adult weight at 12 days, using theoretical (IT) and empirical (IP) index selection methods. Index coefficients were given empirically in the IP line and they were adjusted in the successive generations of selection according to the results obtained in the previous ones. Highly repeatable selection responses in all replicates occurred in both lines for the aggregate genotype (egg laying plus adult weight) and for each individual trait. The IP line tended to increase slightly more than the IT line for aggregate genotype and egg laying, while the highest response in adult weight was obtained with the IT method. The two methods gave consistently different responses in each replicate. The expected results were that IT selection should not exceed IP selection for the aggregate genotype and egg laying while theoretically the IT method should have been superior for increase adult weight. Theoretical expectations for adult weight have been fulfilled in practice. The IP method would be preferred in a practical sense because of its simplicity and freedom from need of parameter estimation.  相似文献

We examined the influence of parental age on life history traits of their offspring in the lines of bean weevil that have evolved different rates of senescence. Measurements included preadult traits (egg size, embryonic developmental time, total preadult developmental time, preadult viability) and adult traits (body weight, total realized fecundity of females, first day of egg laying, early fecundity, late fecundity and longevity). The negative parental age effects were observed for all traits except for the early and total realized fecundity. We did not detect statistically significant line×parental age interactions for either preadult- or adult-survival, so offspring survival did not change with parental age after selection for early vs. late reproduction. It seems that selection acting on the quality of offspring produced by parents of different ages has not been responsible for the evolution of senescence in bean weevil. In this study we examined the effects of long-term selection on early and late reproduction in the bean weevil. The pure lines and the hybrids between the lines within a selection regime were compared for longevity, early and late female fecundity, male mating ability, pre-adult developmental time and wet adult weight. Comparison of hybrid with pure lines provided some evidence for inbreeding despression in the lines from both selection regimes. We found that virgin and mated adults of both sexes from the “old” lines lived longer than “young” line beetles. Comparisons of the hybrid “young” with hybrid “old” lines revealed a trade-off between early and late fecundity of females. For noncompetitive mating ability of males there was no difference between the lines with different rates of senescence when the males were young. But, when the males were older, beetles from the lines selected for delayed senescence expressed superior mating ability. In addition, the “old” line beetles take longer to develop and are heavier than those from “young” line beetles. Although these data suggest that shorter pre-adult developmental time may imply more rapid senescence, there is the possibility of inadvertent selection for rapid development in the “young” lines and this complicates the interpretation of the observed trade-off between the pre-adult and adult performances.  相似文献

As a result of selection for high amylase activity in two strains of the flour beetle Tribolium confusum, mean activity considerably increased. Selection for low activity was ineffective in one strain, and mean activity increased, contrary to expectation, in the downward-selection line of the other.Heritabilities of amylase activity were 0.52 and 0.18 for the two strains (estimated by offspring-midparent regression in generation 1). Population size as a measure of population fitness was assayed in laboratory lines of Drosophila melanogaster subjected to directional selection for positive photoactivity and stabilizing selection for a complex of metric wing characters. Three experimental designs were used: directional and stabilizing selection (DS); directional selection (D); unselected controls (C). Population size increased under all three experimental designs. The population size of DS and C lines as well as the rate of increase of the DS lines were higher as compared to the D lines. The results suggest that stabilizing selection maintains population fitness at the higher level.  相似文献

The role of development in the evolution of postponed senescence is poorly understood despite the existence of a major gerontological theory connecting developmental rate to aging. We investigate the role of developmental rate in the laboratory evolution of aging using 24 distinct populations of Drosophila melanogaster. We have found a significant difference between the larval developmental rates of our Drosophila stocks selected for early (B) and late-life (O) fertility. This larval developmental time difference of approximately 12% (O > B) has been stable for at least 5 yr, occurs under a wide variety of rearing conditions, responds to reverse selection, and is shown for two other O-like selection treatments. Emerging adults from lines with different larval developmental rates show no significant differences in weight at emergence, thorax length, or starvation resistance. Long-developing lines (O, CO, and CB) have greater survivorship from egg to pupa and from pupa to adult, with and without strong larval competition. Crosses between slower developing populations, and a variety of other lines of evidence, indicate that neither mutation accumulation nor inbreeding depression are responsible for the extended development of our late-reproduced selection treatments. These results stand in striking contrast to other recent studies. We argue that inbreeding depression and inadvertent direct selection in other laboratories' culture regimes explain their results. We demonstrate antagonistic pleiotropy between developmental rate and preadult viability. The absence of any correlation between longevity and developmental time in our stocks refutes the developmental theory of aging.  相似文献

Ninety-five wheat microsatellite markers (WMS) were used to verify the authenticity of the set of Saratovskaya 29/Yanetzkis Probat inter-varietal wheat chromosome substitution lines developed using Saratovskaya 29 as the recipient variety. Polymorphic markers were available for all chromosome arms except 4DS, 6DS and 7DS. Each chromosome substitution line was tested by 2–8 microsatellite markers. The results demonstrate that most of the lines are correct. Out of 21 lines tested 17 showed the expected microsatellite pattern of the donor variety. Two entire chromosomes, 1B and 7A, and two chromosome arms, 3AL and 6DS, were not substituted with Yanetzkis Probat in their respective lines. Three microsatellite markers located in the distal regions of chromosome arms 4AL, 3BS and 5BL in the corresponding substitution lines did not reveal the expected microsatellite pattern of the recipient variety. The possible causes of the incorrect substitution line development and the appearance of incorrect distal microsatellite markers are discussed. Abstract.— Developmental time and body size are two positively correlated traits closely related to fitness in many organisms including Drosophila . Previous work suggested that these two traits are involved in a trade-off that may result from a negative genetic correlation between their effects on pre-adult and adult fitness. Here, we examine the evolution of developmental time and body size (indexed by wing length) under artificial selection applied to one or both traits in replicated D. buzzatii populations. Directional changes in both developmental time and wing length indicate the presence of substantial additive genetic variance for both traits. The strongest response to selection for fast development was found in lines selected simultaneously to reduce both developmental time and wing length, probably as an expected consequence of a synergistic effect of indirect selection. When selection was applied in the direction opposite to the putative genetic correlation, that is, large wing length but fast development, no responses were observed for developmental time. Lines selected to reduce both wing length and developmental time diverged slightly faster from the control than lines selected to increase wing length and reduce developmental time. However, wing length did not diverge from the control in lines selected only for fast development. These results suggest a complex genetic basis of the correlation between developmental time and wing length, but are generally consistent with the hypothesis that both traits are related in a trade-off. However, we found that this trade-off may disappear under uncrowded conditions, with fast-developing lines exhibiting a higher pre-adult viability than other lines when tested at high larval density.  相似文献

The objective of this study is to examine the effects of developmental stage on amylase expression in the mosquitofish (Gambusia affinis holbrooki, Poeciliidae). Expression was characterized in terms of amylase activity and amount of amylase protein in five developmental stages: early, mid, and late embryos, 5-day-old juveniles, and adults. Two measures of activity were used: a starch-iodine assay, which measures the change in substrate, and the dinitrosalicyclic acid (DNSA) assay, which measures the change in product. To measure changes in the amount of amylase, the enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) was used. Highest activity and amount was observed in the adult stage. In general, both increased with development. While the two activity measures were positively correlated, these were only weakly correlated with the amount of amylase. Possible reasons for these weak correlations between amylase activity and amount are discussed.  相似文献

选用定位于普通小麦7个部分同源群上的276对微卫星引物对普通小麦中同春和簇毛麦的基因组DNA进行扩增分析,有148对引物可在两个物种间检测到多态性。利用上述显示多态性的引物进一步对7个中国春-簇毛麦二体附加系进行扩增分析,筛选出分别可用来追踪簇毛麦1V至7V染色体的引物wmc49(1BS)、wmc25(2BS)、gdm36(3DS)、gdml45(4AL)、wmc233(5DS)、wmc256(6AL)和gwm344(7BL)。此外还发现6DS上的微卫星引物gwm469可以用来追踪簇毛麦的2V染色体;2DS上的微卫星引物gdm107可用来追踪簇毛麦的6V染色体。进一步用涉及不同簇毛麦和小麦背景的小麦一簇毛麦染色体附加系、代换系和易位系进行扩增分析,这些微卫星标记也可用来鉴定簇毛麦的各条染色体。因此,这然簇毛麦染色体特异的微卫星标记可用来追踪普通小麦背景中的簇毛麦染色体。  相似文献

A selection experiment for large adult weight based on individual performance was conducted for three generations in Helix aspersa aspersa. A second line was kept as an unselected control line. Direct response measured as deviation from the control line was 3.55 g after three generations of artificial selection, which averaged 13%. Realized heritability was 0.38 +/- 0.04. Correlated responses to selection showed a significant increase in weight after hibernation, mean egg weight and mean weight of newly-hatched snails with selection. For adult age, egg number, and hatching rate, no significant change correlated to selection was found, but this is to be confirmed.  相似文献

Our aim was to obtain a viable and easily available dermal substitute (DS) for the definitive coverage of full-thickness burns. A DS composed of a collagen-glycosaminoglycan-chitosan dermal matrix (DM) colonized with foreskin fibroblasts (FF) is described. FF-colonized DS were compared to the DM seeded with adult dermal fibroblasts (DF). FF-colonized DS expressed more fibrillin and tropoelastin than that with DF. Reconstructed skin obtained with both FF- and DF-colonized DS similarly expressed laminin-5 and collagen VII at the dermal-epidermal junction. Both FF- and DF-colonized DS produced cutaneous wound healing mediators in a dose-dependent manner in the presence of platelet lysate. After freeze-thawing, the FF-colonized DS were recovered in culture and retained their ability to produce vascular endothelial growth factor. Grafting of DS into nude rats achieved a complete healing of a dermal-epidermal lesion with a good epidermalization.  相似文献
