Whereas in constant environments parental survival has no effect on optimal clutch size in the absence of trade-offs between juvenile and parental survival, the situation is drastically different in fluctuating environments. We consider a model in which, with respect to reproduction, parents and offspring are equivalent at the start of the next breeding season. When generations are non-overlapping, the clutch size maximizing geometric mean surviving number of offspring is optimal among all pure clutch size strategies. We prove that, as parental survival increases relative to that of the offspring, the optimal clutch size converges to the arithmetic mean maximizing clutch size (the so-called ‘Lack clutch size’). We also give a numerical procedure for calculating optimal mixed strategies and we show that, as environmental variance increases and/or parental survival decreases, mixed rather than pure strategies become optimal. Furthermore, we explain how to estimate fitness from empirical data under the assumptions of our model. In a recent paper (Mitchard et al. 2014, Global Ecology and Biogeography, 23 , 935–946) a new map of forest biomass based on a geostatistical model of field data for the Amazon (and surrounding forests) was presented and contrasted with two earlier maps based on remote‐sensing data Saatchi et al. (2011; RS1) and Baccini et al. (2012; RS2). Mitchard et al. concluded that both the earlier remote‐sensing based maps were incorrect because they did not conform to Mitchard et al. interpretation of the field‐based results. In making their case, however, they misrepresented the fundamental nature of primary field and remote‐sensing data and committed critical errors in their assumptions about the accuracy of research plots, the interpolation methodology and the statistical analysis. By ignoring the large uncertainty associated with ground estimates of biomass and the significant under‐sampling and spatial bias of research plots, Mitchard et al. reported erroneous trends and artificial patterns of biomass over Amazonia. Because of these misrepresentations and methodological flaws, we find their critique of the satellite‐derived maps to be invalid.  相似文献

Abstract. 1. Optimal clutch size theory predicts that individuals will oviposit the number of eggs that increases their fitness. In Anastrepha ludens Loew (Diptera: Tephritidae), females oviposit larger clutches in unripe (firm) fruits than in ripe (soft) fruits. The following hypotheses were tested: (1) Using fruit firmness as an indicator of fruit quality, A. ludens females vary the number of eggs per clutch every time they reach an oviposition decision. (2) Maximising offspring survival with respect to either unripe or ripe fruit requires placing large clutches in firm fruit and smaller clutches in soft fruit. 2. Agar spheres were used as artificial hosts. Three agar concentrations resulted in three degrees of firmness. Mango fruits Mangifera indica L. served as natural hosts. Ripe and unripe fruits were used to test soft and firm host conditions respectively. Females laid significantly larger clutches in the firmer artificial hosts than in the softer hosts. They also laid significantly more eggs in artificial hosts without sugar than in hosts with sugar. Firm (unripe) mangoes also received significantly larger clutches than soft (ripe) mangoes. 3. When an individual female was first presented with a firm artificial host, it laid a large clutch. If subsequently offered a soft host, the female laid a significantly smaller clutch. Finally, if again offered a firm host, clutch size was increased significantly. 4. Possible trade‐offs in offspring fitness were explored in ripe and unripe mangoes by measuring offspring egg‐to‐adult survival, pupal weight, mean adult longevity, and fecundity. Despite the fact that larval survival was greater in soft fruit than in firm fruit, parameters such as pupal weight, mean longevity, and fecundity of adults stemming from both fruit types did not differ significantly. 5. A probable trade‐off between high offspring mortality caused by host unsuitability and low offspring and adult mortality caused by parasitism and predation is discussed as the reason for the exploitation of sub‐optimal hosts.  相似文献

The response of various life-history characteristics of Daphnia pulicaria to photoperiod and food concentration was measured in 16 combinations of maternal and offspring environments (long vs. short day, high vs. low food) in flow-through experiments. Response variables in offspring were time and survival to release of first offspring, clutch size and neonate mass in the first brood, mass of adult females after 30days and somatic growth rate during the course of the experiment. Most of these parameters were directly controlled by food concentration in the offspring environment, but maternal effects frequently modified the response. A long day length in the maternal environment resulted in a prolongation of the time to first clutch release in offspring similar to the direct effect of low food. Likewise, survival to maturation and female mass were affected by maternal photoperiod. Somatic growth rate and clutch size responded to combined effects of maternal food conditions and photoperiod. The laboratory results were used to predict the seasonal change of fecundity of Daphnia in the field. When data on clutch size are ordered in a sequence as the different combinations of maternal and offspring environment occur during the seasonal succession in a temperate lake, they show a bimodal distribution with a high peak in spring and a lower peak in fall. This pattern is consistent with field observations. We conclude that photoperiod and maternal effects are important factors influencing life history and population dynamics of Daphnia.  相似文献

We test the adaptive value of clutch size observed in a natural population of the chestnut weevil Curculio elephas. Clutch size is defined as the number of immatures per infested chestnut. In natural conditions, clutch size averages 1.7 eggs. By manipulating clutch size in the field, we demonstrate that deviations from the theoretical ”Lack clutch size”, estimated as eight immatures, are mainly due to proximate and delayed effects of clutch size on offspring performance. We show the existence of a trade-off between clutch size and larval weight. The latter, a key life-history trait, is highly correlated with fitness because it is a strong determinant of larval survival and potential fecundity of offspring females. The fitness of different potential oviposition strategies characterized by their clutch sizes, ranging from one to nine immatures, was calculated from field- estimated parameters. Chestnut weevil females obtain an evolutionary advantage by laying their eggs singly, since, for instance, fitness of single-egg clutches exceeds fitness of two-egg clutches and four-egg clutches by 8.0% and 15.1% respectively. Theoretical analyses of optimal reproductive rates usually assume a trade-off between offspring production and parental survival. This study verified a survival cost for willow tit males; nonbreeding males survived better than males attending a brood. Theory also predicts a smaller clutch size in birds that are less successful in transforming reproductive investments into mature offspring. As predicted, we found that crested tits, suffering a higher nest predation rate, laid smaller clutches than willow tits. The generally lower survival rate of willow tit adults may largely be attributed to their higher reproductive commitment (larger willow tit clutch size), because no significant interspecific survival difference remained between nonbreeding males. Finally, in willow tits we found a positive correlation between average clutch size and juvenile survival rate (density-dependent) the ensuing year, suggesting that willow tits may adjust clutch size in response to changing survival prospects for their young by using the breeding density as a cue.  相似文献

We investigated experimentally how resources were allocated to reproduction in Daphnia pulex and Daphnia longispina when varying levels of toxic Microcystis were added to higher quality food. We used multiple regression models to estimate mean offspring size and clutch size in relation to maternal size and clutch number, and analysed effects of treatments on residuals from the models. We also measured variation in per offspring investment. At a high cyanobacterial level, D.pulex was virtually unable to reproduce. At a lower level, D.pulex produced small clutches. However, the regression model residuals indicated that the presence of cyanobacteria increased the portion of available resources allocated to reproduction. The observed allocation may be a means to maximize reproduction under diminished longevity. Effects on mean offspring size were marginal in D.pulex but variation in per offspring investment sometimes decreased in cyanobacterial exposures. Daphnia longispina was affected by a higher cyanobacterial level only, where offspring sized was reduced. Deviations from the regression model indicated that effects on maternal size alone do not explain this effect. Clutch size residuals and per offspring investment were unaffected by treatments in D.longispina. The observed responses differ from theoretical models on reproductive allocation under food imitation.   相似文献

An experimental reduction of offspring number has been reported to result in enlargement of offspring size in lizards. We applied the “follicle excision” technique to a lacertid lizard (Takydromus septentrionalis) to examine whether this effect is generalisable to lizards. Of the 82 females that produced 3 successive clutches in the laboratory, 23 females underwent follicle excision after they oviposited the first clutch. Follicle excision reduced clutch size, but did not alter egg size. This result indicates that egg size is not altered during vitellogenesis in T. septentrionalis. Females undergoing follicle excision produced a third clutch (a second post-surgical clutch) as normally as did control females. Females switched from producing more but smaller eggs early in the breeding season to fewer but larger eggs later in the season. Our results indicate that female T. septentrionalis maximize reproductive success by diverting an optimal, rather than a higher, fraction of the available energy to individual offspring. This optimized allocation of the available energy to offspring production explains why follicle excision does not result in enlargement of egg size in this species. Our study provides evidence that an experimental reduction of offspring number does not always result in enlargement of offspring size in lizards.  相似文献

Female hymenoptera are renowned for their ability to adjust offspring sex ratio to local mate competition. When two females share a patch, they frequently produce clutches that differ in size, the female with the larger clutch optimally producing a more female‐biased sex ratio and vice versa. Females can base their sex allocation on their own clutch size only (“self‐knowledge”) or on both females’ clutch sizes (“complete knowledge”). Few studies have genotyped offspring so that each mother's contribution can be considered separately while none has found that both sources of information are used simultaneously. We genotyped 2489 wasps from 28 figs and assigned their maternity to one of the two foundress females. We argue that likelihood is a very convenient method to compare alternative models, while fitness calculations help to appreciate the cost of maladaptation. We find that the pollinating fig wasp Platyscapa awekei simultaneously uses its own as well as the other females clutch size in allocating sex. Indeed, the complete knowledge model explains the data 36 times better than the self‐knowledge model. However, large clutches contained fewer males than the optimal predictions leading to a median selection coefficient of 0.01.  相似文献

The trade‐off between offspring size and number can present a conflict between parents and their offspring. Because egg size is constrained by clutch size, the optimal egg size for offspring fitness may not always be equivalent to that which maximizes parental fitness. We evaluated selection on egg size in three turtle species (Apalone mutica, Chelydra serpentina and Chrysemys picta) to determine if optimal egg sizes differ between offspring and their mothers. Although hatching success was generally greater for larger eggs, the strength and form of selection varied. In most cases, the egg size that maximized offspring fitness was greater than that which maximized maternal fitness. Consistent with optimality theory, mean egg sizes in the populations were more similar to the egg sizes that maximized maternal fitness, rather than offspring fitness. These results provide evidence that selection has maximized maternal fitness to achieve an optimal balance between egg size and number.  相似文献

A combined model to simulate CO2 and H2O gas exchange at the leaf scale was parameterized using data obtained from in situ leaf‐scale observations of diurnal and seasonal changes in the CO2 and H2O gas exchange of four temperate deciduous broad‐leaved trees using a porometric method. The model consists of a Ball et al. type stomatal conductance submodel [Ball, Woodrow & Berry, pp. 221–224 in Progress in Photosynthesis Research (ed. I. Biggins), Martinus‐Nijhoff Publishers, Dordrecht, The Netherlands, 1987] and a Farquhar et al. type biochemical submodel of photosynthesis (Farquhar, von Caemmerer & Berry, Planta 149, 78–90, 1980). In these submodels, several parameters were optimized for each tree species as representative of the quantitative characteristics related to gas exchange. The results show that the seasonal physiological changes of Vcmax25 in the biochemical model of photosynthesis should be used to estimate the long‐term CO2 gas exchange. For Rd25 in the biochemical model of photosynthesis and m in the Ball et al. type stomatal conductance model, the difference should be counted during the leaf expansion period.  相似文献

Abstract Local mate competition theory predicts that offspring sex ratio in pollinating fig wasps is female‐biased when there is only one foundress, and increased foundress density results in increased offspring sex ratio. Information of other foundresses and clutch size have been suggested to be the main proximate explanations for sex ratio adjustment under local mate competition. Our focus was to show the mechanism of sex ratio adjustment in a pollinating fig wasp, Ceratosolen solmsi Mayr, an obligate pollinator of the functionally dioecious fig, Ficus hispida Linn., with controlled experiments in the field. First, we obtained offspring from one pollinator and offspring at different oviposition sequences, and found that offspring sex ratio decreased with clutch size, and pollinators produced most of their male offspring at the start of bouts, followed by mostly females. Second, we found that offspring sex ratio increased with foundress density, and pollinators did adjust their offspring sex ratio to other females in the oviposition patches. We suggest that when oviposition sites are not limited, pollinators will mainly adjust their offspring sex ratio to other foundresses independent of clutch size changes, whereas adjusting clutch size may be used to adjust sex ratio when oviposition sites are limited.  相似文献

The fecundity‐advantage hypothesis (FAH) explains larger female size relative to male size as a correlated response to fecundity selection. We explored FAH by investigating geographic variation in female reproductive output and its relation to sexual size dimorphism (SSD) in Lacerta agilis, an oviparous lizard occupying a major part of temperate Eurasia. We analysed how sex‐specific body size and SSD are associated with two putative indicators of fecundity selection intensity (clutch size and the slope of the clutch size–female size relationship) and with two climatic variables throughout the species range and across two widespread evolutionary lineages. Variation within the lineages provides no support for FAH. In contrast, the divergence between the lineages is in line with FAH: the lineage with consistently female‐biased SSD (L. a. agilis) exhibits higher clutch size and steeper fecundity slope than the lineage with an inconsistent and variable SSD (L. a. exigua). L. a. agilis shows lower offspring size (egg mass, hatchling mass) and higher clutch mass relative to female mass than L. a. exigua, that is both possible ways to enhance offspring number are exerted. As the SSD difference is due to male size (smaller males in L. a. agilis), fecundity selection favouring larger females, together with viability selection for smaller size in both sexes, would explain the female‐biased SSD and reproductive characteristics of L. a. agilis. The pattern of intraspecific life‐history divergence in L. agilis is strikingly similar to that between oviparous and viviparous populations of a related species Zootoca vivipara. Evolutionary implications of this parallelism are discussed.  相似文献

Abstract A central tenet of life‐history theory is the presence of a trade‐off between the size and number of offspring that a female can produce for a given clutch. A crucial assumption of this trade‐off is that larger offspring perform better than smaller offspring. Despite the importance of this assumption empirical, field‐based tests are rare, especially for marine organisms. We tested this assumption for the marine invertebrate, Diplosoma listerianum, a colonial ascidian that commonly occurs in temperate marine communities. Colonies that came from larger larvae had larger feeding structures than colonies that came from smaller larvae. Colonies that came from larger larvae also had higher survival and growth after 2 weeks in the field than colonies that came from smaller larvae. However, after 3 weeks in the field the colonies began to fragment and we could not detect an effect of larval size. We suggest that offspring size can have strong effects on the initial recruitment of D. listerianum but because of the tendency of this species to fragment, offspring size effects are less persistent in this species than in others.  相似文献

1. Oviposition preferences of herbivorous insects are predicted to match offspring performance on different host taxa or on conspecific host genotypes. In gall‐inducing insects, host‐plant properties such as growth rate and gall size, which are determined by plant genotype and growing conditions, may have a significant impact on offspring performance and, hence, should influence oviposition site selection. 2. The present study investigated host preference of the European rosette willow gall midge Rabdophaga rosaria (Loew) in relation to offspring success on seven clones of Salix myrsinifolia Salisb. and two naturally hybridised S. myrsinifolia × phylicifolia L. clones growing in a replicated design in an experimental field under two fertilisation regimes. For each clone, the average growth rate, number of shoot tips, and leaf and gall size were determined, and their effects on midge preference and larval survival were examined. 3. Main shoot height, number of shoot tips, and gall size were significantly affected by clone. The midges clearly preferred certain clones over the others, but preferences were not related to willow growth traits or to gall size. Survival probability was higher in large than in small galls, but females did not prefer large‐leaved clones that produced the biggest rosette galls. Midge oviposition was also uncorrelated with prior rates of leaf‐rust infection and with feeding preferences of voles and folivorous insects. 4. The weak preference–performance relationship of R. rosaria within S. myrsinifolia is probably explained by evolutionary constraints that prevent generalist insects from achieving an ability to discriminate among conspecific hosts of variable quality.  相似文献

Egg and clutch sizes, and gonad somatic index (GSI) at maturity of the amphidromous goby Rhinogobius giurinus were examined in the Aizu River, Wakayama Prefecture, Japan. The goby tended to have a larger clutch size, with smaller eggs, and matured at the lower GSI, compared with those in the three sympatric amphidromous species of R. brunneus complex. Higher water temperature and abundant food conditions may affect the optimal egg size in R. giurinus. Besides, higher larval survival rate during downstream migration may affect lower GSI at maturity in this goby that usually inhabits lower reaches of the river.  相似文献

Red light effects on the uptake of 14C and of 32P was studied by observing leaf sections from 8-day-old etiolated corn leaves that were placed on various substrates following a brief exposure to red radiant energy. There was a general increase of 14C uptake over dark levels into all metabolite fractions that were prepared. This is in contrast with results obtained previously in which leaf samples were first floated on substrate and then irradiated (Mitrakos et al. 1967, Price et al. 1965). The latter tests resulted in a general decrease in sugar and starch as well as 14C content of all fractions. However, under both types of experimental conditions the red light effect manifested itself as an increase in hexosemonophosphate turn-over rate and accumulation of radioactivity in the cell wall polysaccharide fraction. The present data further substantiate the previous work in that they demonstrate the regulatory influence of the hexose pool size on the intermediary metabolism and the manifestation of the phytochrome responses. From the data thus far obtained it cannot be determined as to whether or not phytochrome mediates by controlling phosphorylating activity or through control of specific enzymatic processes that lead to observable cell wall polysaccharide synthesis and leaf unrolling.  相似文献

We investigate the effect of offspring and maternal inbreeding on maternal and offspring traits associated with early offspring fitness in the burying beetle Nicrophorus vespilloides. We conducted two experiments. In the first experiment, we manipulated maternal inbreeding only (keeping offspring outbred) by generating mothers that were outbred, moderately inbred or highly inbred. Meanwhile, in the second experiment, we manipulated offspring inbreeding only (keeping females outbred) by generating offspring that were outbred, moderately inbred or highly inbred. In both experiments, we monitored subsequent effects on breeding success (number of larvae), maternal traits (clutch size, delay until laying, laying skew, laying spread and egg size) and offspring traits (hatching success, larval survival, duration of larval development and average larval mass). Maternal inbreeding reduced breeding success, and this effect was mediated through lower hatching success and greater larval mortality. Furthermore, inbred mothers produced clutches where egg laying was less skewed towards the early part of laying than outbred females. This reduction in the skew in egg laying is beneficial for larval survival, suggesting that inbred females adjusted their laying patterns facultatively, thereby partially compensating for the detrimental effects of maternal inbreeding on offspring. Finally, we found evidence of a nonlinear effect of offspring inbreeding coefficient on number of larvae dispersing. Offspring inbreeding affected larval survival and larval development time but also unexpectedly affected maternal traits (clutch size and delay until laying), suggesting that females adjust clutch size and the delay until laying in response to being related to their mate.  相似文献

Summary The effect is modeled of a positive relationship between clutch size and offspring fitness on the optimal investment in offspring. In species which meet the assumptions of the model, the model predicts a positive correlation between maternal resource level and offspring size. If larger mothers are able to allocate more resources to offspring, then the model would also predict a positive correlation between maternal size and offspring size when the assumptions of the model are met. Thus, this model may help explain both among and within individual variation in offspring size. When offspring are produced in groups and the number of offspring killed per clutch is limited by predator satiation, offspring in larger clutches may experience a higher probability of survival. Such a life style may be found in animals such as sea turtles. Offspring size is positively correlated with maternal size in some members of this group.  相似文献
