The relationship between androgens and paternal behavior is not straightforward, potentially because of the diversity of tasks a male must undertake to maximize reproductive success, notably alternating between courtship, aggression, and offspring care. In some species, these events are separated in time, but in others they are coincident. The endocrine profiles of species that simultaneously court, parent, and defend a nest, such as male bluebanded gobies (Lythrypnus dalli), are not well understood. We sampled a potent fish androgen, 11-ketotestosterone (KT), at different life history stages (experienced parenting males, experienced males not actively parenting, inexperienced males with their first clutch, and females), to examine this relationship. We found that experienced parenting L. dalli males have the highest KT levels of any group, while none of the other groups differed significantly. Males showed elevated KT levels when they had eggs compared to when they did not. Our data suggest that KT facilitates at least some aspects of parental care in L. dalli.  相似文献

There are two major color morphs, truei and dalli types, of the Dall's porpoise and the latter includes two minor morphs. A small number of dalli types are found among truei types off the Pacific coast of Japan, where truei types normally winter. Based on differences in the patch size of dalli -type porpoises taken by the harpoon fishery, we determined that those dalli types contain both minor morphs. Although the total number of both types in the sample was similar, the proportion of the two types varied seasonally. Sex ratio, body length, and maturity rate were different among the dalli and truei types. These facts strongly suggest that these dalli types were not members of the truei -type population and were actually migrants from adjacent dalli -type populations. The definition of the subspecies Phocoenoides dalli dalli and P. d. truei as polymorphic groups is not supported, although we consider that each of the three color morphs is worthy of full subspecific status.  相似文献

The morphology and histology of male and female reproductive systems were examined in Scoloplax distolothrix. Internal insemination was documented in this species by the presence of sperm within the ovaries. Mature males and females have elongated genital papillae, exhibiting a tubular shape in males and a plain heart‐shape with two median protuberances in females. The testes are two elongated structures that converge ventrally, under the intestine, towards the genital papilla. They are joined at the caudal end, forming an ovoid single chamber for sperm storage. Secretory regions were not observed. In the lumen of the testicular tubules, spermatozoa can be tightly packed along their lengths, but do not constitute a spermatozeugmata. The lumen of the sperm storage chamber and spermatic duct are filled with free spermatozoa without the accompanying secretions. The ovaries are bird‐wing shaped, saccular structures that converge ventrally under the intestine, towards the genital papilla. They are joined at the caudal end, forming a tubular chamber possibly destined for oocyte storage. An oviduct with an irregular outline connects the chamber to the tubular region of the genital papilla. No distinct sperm storage structure was found in the ovaries. The unique male and female genital papillae suggest that these structures are associated with the reproductive mode in scoloplacids, representing evidence for insemination. The occurrence of free spermatozoa, without the accompanying secretions and not arranged in a spermatozeugmata can be associated with the presence of a tubular male genital papilla for sperm transfer to the female genital tract. This reinforces the idea that sperm packets are not necessary for all inseminating species. The male reproductive system in scoloplacids is very different from that in auchenipterids, a second catfish family with insemination, which indicates that the occurrence of insemination is not connected to the internal morphology of reproductive organs. Synopsis The urogenital papillae of 30 species of Holarctic lampreys were examined to determine if this structure has any taxonornic use. Total length, branchial length and papilla length were measured. A correlation between mean papilla length and mean total length of the species existed in males for parasitic species but not nonparasitic species, indicating a potential use in nonparasitic species. In nonparasitic species the most obvious differences existed in the papilla length: branchial length ratio. From the limited material available there appeared to be no geographic variation in this ratio, although there is a seasonal variation with the ratio increasing as, spawning approaches. It therefore appears that urogenital papilla length has taxonomic value in male nonparasitic lampreys, provided the specimens are collected in spawning condition. An account of gonadal morphology and reproductive traits of the Amazonian arapaimatid, Arapaima gigas (Schinz 1822), is given. The only functional ovary (left) was foliaceous in shape having the ventral surface without an ovarian capsule. The absence of the ovarian capsule ventral portion, absence of oviduct and funnel‐shaped coelomic cavity are features that imply that oocytes are freed in the coelomic cavity before being shed to the aquatic environment through a genital papilla. The only functional testis (left) was cord‐like with a maximum diameter of 1–1.5 cm and was connected to the genital papilla through a spermatic duct. Size at sexual maturity was 145–154 cm and 115–124 cm, total length class, for females and males, respectively.  相似文献

The primary sculpture of the seed surface in the genus Frailea (Cactaceae) is characterized by a i flat outer periclinal wall and the presence of an usually eccentric papilla. Papilla morphology differs mainly in size and breadth:length ratio. Seeds of different species (groups) are characterized by special patterns in the arrangement of short and long papillae on the surface, thus providing a useful tool for taxonomic studies in Frailea. The seeds of Frailea castanea possess branched papillae, a character restricted in this genus to this species. Moreover, such papilla morphology seems to be unique for the seed epidermis in spermatophytes. The possible function of the papillae is discussed.  相似文献

Migratory birds have been suspected as playing a central role in transmission of various trematodes, but few surveys have been undertaken in the Republic of Korea. In the present study, we describe new fauna of microphallid flukes in Korea. Two species of microphallids were found in the intestines of 2 migratory bird species, namely the red necked stints (Calidris ruficollis) and the terek sandpiper (Xenus cinereus), in a coastal area of Gunsan-si, Jeollabuk-do. The microphallids recovered from the latter were 451 μm in length and 217 μm in width, and the eggs were very small, 13 μm by 8 μm. They had the characteristic extracecal vitellaria intruding into the median posttesticular area, belonging to Endocotyle incana. Another microphallids were discovered from both migratory birds, 417 μm in length and 249 μm in width. The cirrus was projecting into the genital atrium in form of male papilla, and bounded by a muscular flap, termed pseudogonotyl. They were identified as Spelotrema pseudogonotyla in consideration of the distinctive male papilla and pseudogonotyl. Besides these flukes, Maritrema obstipum and Gynaecotyla squatarolae also were recovered. This paper is in fact the first report on the presence of Spelotrema and Endocotyle in Korea.  相似文献

Microcotyle omanae n. sp. (Monogenea: Microcotylidae) is described from the gills of Cheimerius nufar (Valenciennes) (Sparidae) from the Arabian Sea. The new species closely resembles Microcotyle arripis Sandars, 1945, M. helotes Sandars, 1944, M. caudata Goto, 1984 and M. sebastis Goto, 1984, which have also been found in the Indo-Pacific. Microcotyle omanae n. sp. differs from M. arripis, M. helotes and M. caudata by its greater number of testes, from M. arripis, M. helotes by its greater length of the genital atrium, length/width ratio of the genital atrium and length of the eggs, and from M. helotes also in greater width of the clamps, from M. caudata and M. sebastis in its greater number of clamps and additionally from M. sebastis by its smaller genital atrial spines and clamps and by the ratio between length and width of the genital atrium. Moreover, the mature specimens of the new species have greater average body length than all above mentioned species. Correlations between 15 morphometric characters and body length are analysed in the new species, and their significance for species differentiation is discussed.  相似文献

Abstract

Kernel morphology and weight of wheat (Triticum aestivum L.) affect both yield and quality; however, the genetic basis of these traits and their interactions has not been fully understood. In this study, to investigate the genetic factors affecting kernel morphology and the association of kernel morphology traits with kernel weight, kernel length (KL), width (KW) and thickness (KT) were evaluated, together with hundred-grain weight (HGW), in a recombinant inbred line population derived from Nanda2419?×?Wangshuibai, with data from five trials (two different locations over 3 years). The results showed that HGW was more closely correlated with KT and KW than with KL. A whole genome scan revealed four QTLs for KL, one for KW and two for KT, distributed on five different chromosomes. Of them, QKl.nau-2D for KL, and QKt.nau-4B and QKt.nau-5A for KT were newly identified major QTLs for the respective traits, explaining up to 32.6 and 41.5% of the phenotypic variations, respectively. Increase of KW and KT and reduction of KL/KT and KW/KT ratios always resulted in significant higher grain weight. Lines combining the Nanda 2419 alleles of the 4B and 5A intervals had wider, thicker, rounder kernels and a 14% higher grain weight in the genotype-based analysis. A strong, negative linear relationship of the KW/KT ratio with grain weight was observed. It thus appears that kernel thickness is the most important kernel dimension factor in wheat improvement for higher yield. Mapping and marker identification of the kernel dimension-related QTLs definitely help realize the breeding goals.

Animals with internal fertilization often exhibit marked diversification in genital morphology among closely related species. However, our knowledge of the genetic architecture underlying genital evolution is still limited. We constructed genetic linkage maps and analysed quantitative trait loci (QTL) for F2 hybrids of two closely related species of the carabid beetles Carabus (Ohomopterus) iwawakianus and C. (O.) maiyasanus, which show matching male and female genital shapes within species, but marked differences in genital morphologies between species. The linkage maps comprised both amplified fragment length polymorphism and microsatellite markers. Composite interval mapping to detect QTL for three traits of male copulatory piece (length, width, weight) and two traits for female vaginal appendix (length, width) resulted in the detection of one to five significant QTL for each trait. The QTL explained large proportions of phenotypic variance. Thus, the interspecific difference in the genital morphologies appeared to be determined by relatively small numbers of genes with large genetic effects. QTL of different traits for the same or different sexes co‐occurred on five of eight linkage groups with significant QTL; in particular, three QTL for different male and female genital traits occurred almost at the same position. Each of the male genital traits showed uniform signs of additive genetic effects, suggesting that directional selection has led to species‐specific morphologies. However, the signs of additive genetic effects in each female genital trait were not uniform, suggesting that coevolution between sexes is not necessarily concerted. This result requires further assessment because the sample size of F2 females was small.  相似文献

Characteristics of the oospores have been used to delimit sections and, in some cases, species in the genus Tolypella A. Braun. To test the utility of oospore characters for identifying North American species of Tolypella, we investigated oospores from field‐collected and herbarium specimens. Oospore dimensions (length, width, and length to width ratio) and morphology (color, ridge number and shape, wall ornamentation, and basal impression number) were measured. Oospore dimensions were statistically analyzed and oospore morphology was studied with light and scanning electron microscopy. Statistical analyses showed significant differences in length, width, and length to width ratios among most Tolypella species and populations but there was considerable overlap, which suggested that species identification based on oospore measurements alone is not wholly reliable. In addition, oospore morphology was not unique for every species.  相似文献

Wave-exposure influences the form of many organisms. Curiously, the impact of flow extremes on feeding structures has received little attention. Barnacles extend feather-like legs to feed, and prior work revealed a highly precise association between leg length and water velocity in one species. To assess the generality of this flow-dependence, we quantified variation in four leg traits (ramus length, ramus diameter, seta length, and intersetal spacing) in four intertidal barnacles (Balanus glandula, Chthamalus dalli, Semibalanus cariosus, Pollicipes polymerus) over a wave-exposure gradient in the North-Eastern Pacific. All species exhibited a negative allometric relation between leg length and body mass. Proportionally longer feeding legs may permit smaller barnacles to avoid lower flow and particle flux associated with boundary layers. Although coefficients of allometry did not vary with wave-exposure, form differences among wave-exposures were substantial. Depending on the species, acorn barnacles of the same size from protected shores had feeding legs that were 37-80% longer and 18-25% thinner, and setae that were 36-50% longer and up to 25% more closely spaced, than those from exposed shores. Differences were less pronounced for the gooseneck barnacle, P. polymerus. Moreover, in situ water velocity explained an impressive percentage of overall leg-length variation: 92% in B. glandula, 67% in C. dalli, 91% in S. cariosus, and 92% in P. polymerus. Clearly, both size and shape of barnacle feeding legs respond to local flow conditions. This response appears widespread--across two orders of thoracican barnacles, Pedunculata and Sessilia, and two superfamilies of acorn barnacles (Balanoidea and Chthamaloidea)--and likely adaptive. Longer rami and setae would yield a larger feeding area in low flow, whereas shorter, stouter rami with shorter setae would be less vulnerable to damage in high flow. Finally, the proportionally most variable species was abundant in the widest range of habitats, suggesting that increased plasticity may permit a wider niche breadth.  相似文献

珙桐是我国特有珍稀濒危植物,休眠期长且具二次休眠现象。将处于休眠萌发过程中的珙桐种子依据胚根长度划分为4个阶段,利用高效液相色谱(HPLC)测定各阶段种子及其内果皮中ABA(脱落酸)、GA(赤霉素)、KT(细胞分裂素)、IAA(3-吲哚乙酸)4种内源激素含量,分析其比值动态变化,并与幼苗阶段进行比较。结果显示:未破壳种子的内果皮中内源激素含量以ABA最高,其次是GA、IAA、KT,随着种子破壳后四种激素含量显著降低。除ABA外,种子中GA、IAA和KT含量随着胚根的伸长逐渐升高,但仍低于幼苗阶段。此外,随着胚根伸长,种子中GA/ABA、IAA/ABA、KT/ABA比值逐渐增大,其中以GA/ABA的变化最显著。因此,珙桐种子的休眠和萌发可能主要受ABA和GA的平衡和拮抗来调控。  相似文献

It is widely admitted that sexual selection is the responsible force behind genital traits. However, the particular mechanisms of genital evolution are still debated. Recently, studies of genital static allometry in insects have been used to elucidate such mechanisms. Insect genital traits are often reported to show negative allometry (i.e., a slope < 1), which has generated a number of ideas on how genital traits are selected. However, many studies that have inferred selection mechanisms have omitted consideration of the function of genital traits, used unreliable indicators of body size, and only rarely included female genitalia in their analysis. We investigated whether negative allometry operates for genitalia in two damselfly species (Protoneura cara and Ischnura denticollis). Damselflies are suitable for genital allometry tests as their genital function and body size indicators (wing length and head width) are relatively well known and established. First, we show that the aedeagus is used to physically remove sperm from both sperm storage organs (bursa and spermatheca) and that wing length and head width correlate positively with other morphological traits for the two study species. Second, we estimated genital allometry by measuring aedeagal length, vaginal length, bursal volume, and spermathecal volume. Our results indicate no consistent allometric pattern. Allometry for aedeagal length and vaginal width was not the same. Thus, there was no support for a negative allometric relationship. We urge researchers investigating allometry to look directly at how genitalia function rather than inferring function from allometric relationships only.  相似文献

The Dalmatian cyprinid genus Phoxinellus is characterized by reductive characters most likely associated with the environmental conditions of small karstic streams, where all species of this genus occur. Based on 33 morphological traits, nuclear and mtDNA sequences Phoxinellus was found to be paraphyletic and included three not closely related monophyletic units. The scientific name Phoxinellus should therefore be restricted to species having plain coloration, small or absent postcleithrum, no genital papilla and an almost entirely naked body such as P. alepidotus, P. dalmaticus, and P. pseudalepidotus. Species that also have a small or absent postcleithrum and no genital papilla but display a dark stripe from the head to the caudal peduncle, and are entirely covered by distinct, not overlapping scales should be positioned closely to Telestes. Thus, we suggest inclusion of Phoxinellus croaticus, P. fontinalis and Paraphoxinus metohiensis in the genus Telestes. The Phoxinellus species that have a irregularly spotted color pattern, a large postcleithrum, an increased number of precaudal anal-fin pterygiophores, and a large genital papilla in females represent its own evolutionary line closely related to the Balkan species of Pseudophoxinus. For this monophyletic group, we propose to introduce a new genus: Delminichthys. This genus includes the species D. adspersus, D. ghetaldii, D. krbavensis and D. jadovensis.  相似文献

The prevalences of three helminths, Campula oblonga, Halocercus dalli and Crassicauda sp., recovered from Dall's porpoises which were net-entrapped incidentally in the vicinity of the Western Aleutian Islands in the northwest Pacific are reported. Specimens of Campula oblonga were found within the bile ducts of 46% of 127 livers examined. The prevalence of hepatic trematodiasis increased with the age of the host. Pulmonary nodules associated with Halocercus dalli were noted in 71% of the Dall's porpoises. Adult H. dalli were recovered from the main stem bronchi of heavily infected lungs. Younger animals exhibited a relatively higher prevalence. Specimens of Crassicauda sp. were found within the main lactiferous canal of 69% of 29 mammary glands examined. The prevalence was highest in mature porpoises. Possible detrimental effects and the modes of transmission of the three species of parasites are also considered.  相似文献

The effects of nitrate (NO3-) supply on shoot morphology, vertical distribution of shoot and root biomass and total nitrogen (N) acquisition by two perennial ryegrass (Lolium perenne L.) cultivars (AberElan and Preference) and two white clover (Trifolium repens L.) cultivars (Grasslands Huia and AberHerald) were studied in flowing nutrient culture. Cultivars were grown from seed as monocultures and the clovers inoculated with Rhizobium. The 6-week measurement period began on day 34 (grasses) and day 56 (clovers) when the NO3- supply was adjusted to either 2 mmol m-3 (low nitrogen, LN) or 50 mmol m-3 (high nitrogen, HN). These treatments were subsequently maintained automatically. Plants were harvested at intervals to measure their morphology and N content. Cultivars of both species differed significantly in several aspects of their response to NO3- supply. In the grasses, the LN treatment increased the root : shoot ratio of AberElan but did not affect the distribution of root length in the root profile. In contrast, this treatment changed the root distribution of Preference compared with HN, resulting in a larger proportion of root length being distributed further down the root profile. The morphology of white clover Grasslands Huia was for the most part unaffected by the level of NO3- supply. In contrast, AberHerald exhibited different growth strategies, with LN plants increasing their stolon weight per unit length at the expense of leaf production, leaf area and stolon length, whereas HN plants showed reduced stolon thickness, greater leaf area production and stolon length per plant. Cultivars with different morphological/physiological strategies in response to NO3- supply may be of value in the construction of 'compatible mixtures' aimed at reducing oscillations in sward clover content by extending the range of conditions that allow balanced coexistence of species to occur.  相似文献

In the coral reef fish Thalassoma bifasciatum , males vary the number of sperm they release in successive spawnings with individual females in accordance with female body and clutch size. The morphology and histological structure of the male genital papilla, sperm duct, oviduct and surrounding musculature were examined in an effort to elucidate the mechanism permitting control of the number of gametes released during mating. In males, urinary and genital ducts pass separately through a common urogenital papilla and are associated with a striated sphincter muscle and a pair of thin, smooth ligament muscles arising from the first proximal anal fin radial and passing laterally around the sperm duct and oviduct. Within the papilla, the sperm duct resembles a narrow funnel whose inner walls contain longitudinal folds or septa protruding into the lumen of the duct. Dorsal to the papilla, the sperm duct enlarges and is divided into numerous, open chambers by irregular, longitudinal trabeculae. The wall of the duct and the trabeculae contain flat epithelium, smooth muscle and loose connective tissue. In females, the oviduct contains no trabeculae and is not divided into chambers. The ligament muscles are more thoroughly embedded in the sphincter muscle of the rectum than in males. Some ways in which these structures might control gamete release are suggested.  相似文献

The African cichlid fishes show great diversity in mating displays and reproductive strategies, yet species differences in genital morphology have been little studied. Observational notes have described broad sex differences in external genital shape between males and females, but these differences have not been quantified. We examined three aspects of genital morphology (relative anogenital distance, relative vent length, and relative external genital area) in two riverine and eleven Lake Malawi African cichlid species from eight genera. We find the most sexually distinct morphology in the Lake Malawi rock cichlids and the least sexual dimorphism in the riverine outgroup; additionally, diversity in metrics within genus indicates that these traits are recently evolving. Sexual dimorphism in morphology is present in most species, and, in the Lake Malawi species, multivariate discriminant analysis allows for accurate assignment of gonadal sex based on genital morphology and body size. This will serve as a useful method for sexing fish in a nonlethal fashion and provides a starting point for further examination of the evolution of genital morphology in this diverse group of fishes.  相似文献

研究了宁夏枸杞不同发育时期果实和种子形态的变化特征及种子内胚的变化.结果表明:宁夏枸杞果实的生长发育曲线为花后8d以前为其第一次快速生长期,花后8~24 d为缓慢生长期,花后24~34 d是第二次快速生长期,属于典型的双“S”型.宁夏枸杞种子的生长曲线既不属于单“S”型,也不属于双“S”型,表现为果实的第一次快速生长期同样也是种子的快速生长期,但种子完成的生长比例快于果实完成的生长比例,此期种子内的胚乳生长快;当果实进入缓慢生长期,种子也表现出缓慢生长的特性,且种子长度和宽度的增加速率均显著低于果实第一次快速生长期种子的生长速率,此期种子主要进行胚的分化;在果实的第二次快速生长期,果实体积和重量迅速增加,而种子的长度和宽度增加很少,此期种子内仅胚进一步增大,从而反映出宁夏枸杞果实的发育与种子发育有一定的相关性.  相似文献
