Agonistic behavior between heterospecifics, in which individuals of one species attack another, may cause a subordinate species to shift resource or habitat use. Subsequent evolutionary responses to selection may mimic shifts expected under ecological character displacement, but with no role played by exploitative competition. Alternatively, aggressive behavior can evolve when fitness is improved by excluding members of a coexisting species from a defendable resource through interference. We tested whether heterospecific agonistic behavior has evolved in brook stickleback (Culaea inconstans) by comparing replicate allopatric populations to those sympatric with ninespine stickleback (Pungitius pungitius). We also tested for heritable variation in heterospecific aggressive behavior by rearing family groups in a common environment. Allopatric populations of brook stickleback were more aggressive than ninespine stickleback, suggesting that pre-existing aggression in brook stickleback contributed to niche shifts by ninespine stickleback. In addition, sympatric adult brook stickleback were more aggressive toward ninespine stickleback than brook stickleback from allopatric populations. Overt heterospecific aggressive behaviors were heritable, and aggression in juvenile brook stickleback increased with age in sympatric but not in allopatric populations reared in a common environment. Brook stickleback have evolved increased aggression when they coexist with ninespine stickleback. These stickleback communities have been structured by both evolved and pre-existing variation in heterospecific aggressive behavior in brook stickleback.  相似文献

Investigating the consequences of landscape features on population genetic patterns is increasingly important to elucidate the ecological factors governing connectivity between populations and predicting the evolutionary consequences of landscapes. Small prairie lakes in Alberta, Canada, and the brook stickleback (Culaea inconstans) that inhabit them, provide a unique aquatic system whereby populations are highly isolated from one another. These heterogeneous and extreme environments are prone to winterkills, an event whereby most of the fish die and frequent bottlenecks occur. In this study, we characterized the genetic population structure of brook stickleback among several lakes, finding that the species is hierarchically influenced by within‐lake characteristics in small‐scale watersheds. Landscape genetic analyses of the role of spatial features found support for basin characteristics associated with genetic diversity and bottlenecks in 20% of the sampled lakes. These results suggest that brook stickleback population genetic patterns may be driven, at least in part, by ecological processes that accelerate genetic drift and landscape patterns associated with reduced dispersal. Collectively, these results reinforce the potential importance of connectivity in the maintenance of genetic diversity, especially in fragmented landscapes.  相似文献

Synopsis Three species (central mudminnow, fathead minnow and brook stickleback) survive when a northern Wisconsin lake becomes anoxic in winter. Some gas bubbles beneath the ice contained as much as 11° oxygen when the lake water contained <0.30 mg 1–1 dissolved oxygen. Experiments conducted in the field determined that gas bubbles prolonged survival of all species, especially the mudminnow and stickleback. In the laboratory, brook sticklebacks exhibited the lowest and fathead minnows the highest routine metabolic rate corrected for weight. Rate of gill ventilation of all three increased from 20 to 70 beats per minute as oxygen levels declined from 4.0 to 0.25 mg 1–1. At low oxygen levels they moved to the upper one-third of the test tanks. Small size, low metabolic rate, tolerance of low oxygen conditions and reduced activity resulted in reduced demand for dissolved oxygen. Head shape, ventilation rate, vertical movement and utilization of high oxygen microzones also enhanced exploitation of low levels of dissolved oxygen. Central mudminnows used oxygen directly from gas bubbles found under the ice.  相似文献

Prepulse inhibition (PPI) of the startle response is a psychophysiological measure of sensorimotor gating believed to be cross-modal between different sensory systems. We analyzed the tactile startle response (TSR) and PPI of TSR (tPPD,using light as a prepulse stimulus,in the mouse strains A/J and C57BL/6J and 36 recombinant congenic strains derived from them.Parental strains were significantly different for TSR,but were comparable for tPPI.Among the congenic strains, variation for TSR was significant in both genetic backgrounds, but that of tPPI was significant only for the C57BL/6J background.Provisional mapping for loci modulating TSR and tPPI was carded out.Using mapping data from our previous study on acoustic startle responses (ASR) and PPI of ASR (aPPI),no common markers for aPPI and tPPI were identified. However, some markers were significantly associated with both ASR and TSIL at least in one genetic background. These results indicate cross-modal genetic regulation for the startle response but not for PPI,in these mouse strains.  相似文献

Background

The threespine stickleback (Gasterosteus aculeatus) has become an important model species for studying both contemporary and parallel evolution. In particular, differential adaptation to freshwater and marine environments has led to high differentiation between freshwater and marine stickleback populations at the phenotypic trait of lateral plate morphology and the underlying candidate gene Ectodysplacin (EDA). Many studies have focused on this trait and candidate gene, although other genes involved in marine-freshwater adaptation may be equally important. In order to develop a resource for rapid and cost efficient analysis of genetic divergence between freshwater and marine sticklebacks, we generated a low-density SNP (Single Nucleotide Polymorphism) array encompassing markers of chromosome regions under putative directional selection, along with neutral markers for background.

Results

RAD (Restriction site Associated DNA) sequencing of sixty individuals representing two freshwater and one marine population led to the identification of 33,993 SNP markers. Ninety-six of these were chosen for the low-density SNP array, among which 70 represented SNPs under putatively directional selection in freshwater vs. marine environments, whereas 26 SNPs were assumed to be neutral. Annotation of these regions revealed several genes that are candidates for affecting stickleback phenotypic variation, some of which have been observed in previous studies whereas others are new.

Conclusions

We have developed a cost-efficient low-density SNP array that allows for rapid screening of polymorphisms in threespine stickleback. The array provides a valuable tool for analyzing adaptive divergence between freshwater and marine stickleback populations beyond the well-established candidate gene Ectodysplacin (EDA).

Biomechanical reflections suggest that lizards that have specialized in running should differ in parts of their morphological design from lizards that have specialized in climbing. Moreover, adaptation in one direction may conflict with performance in the other. We tested this assumed trade-off by measuring climbing and running performance in two subspecies of the Mediterranean lizard Poaarcis hispanica. One subspecies, P. h. atrata , inhabits a number of small islets near the Spanish coast. It is mainly ground dwelling. The other subspecies, P. h. hispanica , was sampled on the mainland of Spain. It frequendy occupies vertical elements within its habitat. Our data do not support the notion of a trade-off between both types of locomotion. Individuals of P. h. hispanica both run and climb faster than those of P. h. atrata. There is no difference between subspecies in ability to cling onto tilted substrates. Predictions on the morphology of both subspecies, inspired by biomechanical arguments, are not supported by our measurements.  相似文献

Aciurina bigeloviae (Cockerell) (Diptera: Tephritidae) is a gall-forming tephritid fly associated with rubber rabbitbrush, Chrysothamnus nauseosus (Pallas) Britton (Compositae), throughout the western United States. Two distinct gall morphologies were found among A. bigeloviae populations, each associated with its own morphologically distinct group of subspecies of C. nauseosus . Adults emerging from these galls can be distinguished on the basis of wing morphology and pronotal colour. Electrophoretic analysis of these two morphs suggested limited, unidirectional gene flow between them. Results of several other investigations were consistent with a restricted gene flow hypothesis. Heterotypic matings occurred in the laboratory, but at a depressed level. Host plant preferences, ovipositional success on the different host plant groups, and two life history parameters differed between the two fly types. Based on these multiple lines of evidence, we concluded that these two morphs of Aciurina represent two species: A. bigeloviae and A. trixa Curran. Reasons why these flies might be more appropriately viewed as host races are discussed as are scenarios which might account for their divergence.  相似文献

Several studies demonstrated that in insects cuticle melanism is interrelated with pathogen resistance, as melanin‐based coloration and innate immunity possess similar physiological pathways. For some insects, higher pathogen resistance was observed in darker individuals than in individuals with lighter cuticular coloration. Here, we investigated the difference in immune response between two color morphs (black and red) and between the life stages (pupa and adult) of the red palm weevil Rhynchophorus ferrugineus (Coleoptera: Curculionidae). Here in this study, cuticle thickness, microbial test (antimicrobial activity, phenoloxidase activity, and hemocyte density), and immune‐related gene expression were evaluated at different stages of RPW. Study results revealed that cuticle thickness of black phenotype was thicker than red phenotype at old‐pupa stage, while no significant difference found at adult stage. These results may relate to the development processes of epidermis in different stages of RPW. The results of antimicrobial activity, phenoloxidase (PO) activity, and hemocyte density analyses showed that adults with a red phenotype had stronger pathogen resistance than those with a black phenotype. In addition to antimicrobial activity and PO activity, we tested relative gene expression in the fat body of old pupae. The results of hemolymph antimicrobial analysis showed that old pupae with a red phenotype were significantly different from those with a black phenotype at 12 hr after Staphylococcus aureus injection, suggesting that red phenotype pupae were more sensitive to S. aureus. Examination of gene expression in the fat body also revealed that the red phenotype had a higher immune response than the black phenotype. Our results were inconsistent with the previous conclusion that dark insects had increased immune function, suggesting that the relationship between cuticle pigmentation and immune function in insects was not a direct link. Additional possible factors that are associated with the immune response, such as life‐history, developmental, physiological factors also need to be considered.  相似文献

A portion of the mitochondrial 16S rRNA gene was compared between two color morphotypes of Gerres erythrourus, viz. “yellow type” and “white type,” obtained from Ryukyu Islands, Japan, and various areas of the Indo-Pacific, respectively. Phylogenetic analyses showed that the haplotypes of each color morph were reciprocally monophyletic, supported by high bootstrap values. The degree of sequence difference between the two color morphs was comparable to that existing between species of the same complex as well as other distinct gerreid species. The genetic results together with their geographic range indicated that the two color morphs represent two distinct species. The transition from marine to freshwater life in the threespine stickleback (Gasterosteus aculeatus) is accompanied by complex morphological changes-including reduction in bony armor and change in body shape-but experimental evidence for the selective agents behind these evolutionary transitions is sparse. We investigated whether selection by predatory fish affects threespine stickleback morphology differentially when refuge is absent (pelagic lifestyle-ancestral condition) or present (benthic lifestyle-derived condition). Our results show that selection favors low numbers of lateral plates in habitats with refuge, whereas fully plated individuals have a selective advantage in habitats without refuge. We also found that a decrease in the length of the caudal peduncle increased survival probability, irrespective of habitat. The effect of spine lengths on survival was evident only in a multivariate analysis of selection, implying that it is essential to account for phenotypic and genetic correlations between traits before drawing conclusions about the effects of selection on single traits. Apart from uncovering targets and patterns of predator-induced selection on threespine stickleback morphology, our results provide direct evidence to support the hypothesis that differences in antipredator strategies in pelagic versus benthic sticklebacks could play a role in the repeated, independent cases of plate number reduction following freshwater colonization in this species.  相似文献

This study was tailored to compare the cryopreservation of the human ovarian cortex using closed metal container vitrification or the slow-freezing technique. Superficial ovarian cortical tissue biopsies were collected from 12 participants who underwent gynaecological videolaparoscopy. The fragmented samples were allocated to three experimental conditions: (a) fresh ovarian tissue, (b) slow-freezing, and (c) vitrification with a metal closed container. After thawing or rewarming, cellular morphological analyses were performed to determine tissue viability. The cellular response to thermal stress was measured by a putative increase in the immune quantification of the heat shock protein 70 kDa (heat shock protein 70 kDa response — HSR) after a heat challenge (2 h exposure at 42 °C). Both the total number of intact follicles and the frequency of primordial follicles were higher in fresh ovarian tissue than in the preserved samples, regardless of the technique employed. There was a trend towards an increase in the absolute number of intact follicles in the tissue preserved by vitrification. After cryopreservation, a higher HSR was obtained after slow-freezing. These results indicate that both cryopreservation techniques present advantages and may be used as alternatives to ovarian tissue cryopreservation.  相似文献

Genetic evidence for a trimeric structure for purine nucleoside phosphorylase in the brook lamprey is presented. This enzyme is encoded by a single locus with two alleles segregating at frequencies of 0.98 and 0.02 in a Welsh population. It is suggested that this enzyme is likely to be a trimer in all classes of vertebrates.B. J. McAndrew and G. P. Wallis were supported by NERC Research Studentships.  相似文献

Summary The morphology of the complex tibial organs in the forelegs of two bushcricket species belonging to the Phaneropterinae and Decticinae (Tettigoniidae) is described comparatively. In both species the tibial organs are made up of the subgenual organ, the intermediate organ and the crista acustica; the latter are parts of the tympanal organs and serve as auditory receptors. The very thin tympana in the forelegs ofPholidoptera griseoaptera (Decticinae) are protected by tympanal covers whereas inLeptophyes punctatissima (Phaneropterinae) the tympana are thicker and fully exposed. The overall auditory sensitivity ofL. punctatissima is lower and the sensitivity maximum of the hearing threshold lies at higher frequencies compared toP. griseoaptera. The number of scolopidia in the three scolopale organs and the dimensions of parts of the sound conducting system differs in the two species. In the crista acustica ofL. punctatissima a higher number of scolopidia is distributed in a smaller range than inP. griseoaptera; the scolopidia are especially concentrated in the distal part. Morphometrical analyses indicate that the dimensions of the spiracles, the acoustic trachea and the tympana determine the overall auditory sensitivity and that the arrangement of the scolopidia and the dimensions of structures in the crista acustica affect the frequency tuning of the hearing threshold.  相似文献

Lessonia trabeculata is the most important brown seaweed in northern Chilean subtidal environments. It usually grows in areas with high to moderately high water movement, and only occasionally in sheltered habitats. These different hydrodynamic environments produce morphologically and physiologically distinct plants. The purpose of this study was to determine probable differences in reproductive features between two L. trabeculata populations exposed to different water movement intensities. The zoospore production, settlement, germination, gametophyte fertility and survival were studied.Zoospore release and spore attachment capacity were higher from blades from El Francés Beach, the locality with higher water movement energy. Germination at 24 hours was higher in the germlings from El Francés Beach than those from La Herradura Bay. However, after 4 days of culture germination rates were similar. Average survival rates of gametophytes were similar for both populations. After 20 days culturing gametophytes from El Francés Beach fertilization was observed, while in samples from La Herradura Bay the sporophytes were seen at 27d.The results suggest a higher reproductive vitality in plants of Lessonia trabeculata living in an environment with an active water movement, than plants growing in a sheltered environment.  相似文献

Selection programmes are mainly concerned with increasing genetic gain. However, short-term progress should not be obtained at the expense of the within-population genetic variability. Different prediction models for the evolution within a small population of the genetic mean of a selected trait, its genetic variance and its inbreeding have been developed but have mainly been validated through Monte Carlo simulation studies. The purpose of this study was to compare theoretical predictions to experimental results. Two deterministic methods were considered, both grounded on a polygenic additive model. Differences between theoretical predictions and experimental results arise from differences between the true and the assumed genetic model, and from mathematical simplifications applied in the prediction methods. Two sets of experimental lines of chickens were used in this study: the Dutch lines undergoing true truncation mass selection, the other lines (French) undergoing mass selection with a restriction on the representation of the different families. This study confirmed, on an experimental basis, that modelling is an efficient approach to make useful predictions of the evolution of selected populations although the basic assumptions considered in the models (polygenic additive model, normality of the distribution, base population at the equilibrium, etc.) are not met in reality. The two deterministic methods compared yielded results that were close to those observed in real data, especially when the selection scheme followed the rules of strict mass selection: for instance, both predictions overestimated the genetic gain in the French experiment, whereas both predictions were close to the observed values in the Dutch experiment.  相似文献

Swimming crabs of the taxon Portunoidea show specialized, paddle-shaped fifth pereiopods (P5), which play a role in these crabs' ability to swim. In this study, the morphology of the fifth pereiopod in swimming and non-swimming crabs was studied in detail and the mobility in the articulations between podomeres was calculated from reconstructed three-dimensional (3D)-models. This way, we aimed to provide new estimates of kinematic parameters, and to answer the question on a possible homology of the P5 within several portunoid clades. We measured and compared podomere length ratios, orientations of the joint axes, and modeled single range of motion ( sROM ) of each joint as well as the total range of motion ( tROM ) of all joints of the P5 as a whole. Seven Portunoidea species, four of them belonging to the P5-swimming crab morphotype (Liocarcinus depurator, Polybius henslowii, Callinectes sapidus, Portunus pelagicus) and three not belonging to this morphotype (Carcinus aestuarii, Portumnus latipes, and with uncertain status Carupa tenuipes) were compared with the non-portunoids Sternodromia monodi, Ranina ranina, Raninoides bouvieri, Eriocheir sinensis, Varuna litterata, Ashtoret lunaris, and Cancer pagurus. The study was carried out using a combination of microcomputer tomography (μCT)-techniques and 3D-reconstructions. The μCT-data were used to create surface models of the P5 in Amira, which were then 3D-animated and manipulated in Maya to qualitatively compare modeled kinematic parameters. Results show that the merus and carpus in swimming crabs are shorter than in non-swimming crabs, while sROM angles are generally larger. The tROM of all joints expressed as Euclidean distances is generally higher in the portunoids (except for Carcinus). Our comparison of the complete trajectory of the dactylus tip regarding all maximum joint positions of the studied species suggests that the P5-swimming leg might have evolved once in the Portunoidea and got lost afterward in certain clades.  相似文献

The hyperaemic response of the hepatic artery to portal vein occlusion (the buffer response) and the action of exogenous adenosine upon hepatic artery blood flow was studied in Asian hybrid minipigs as a potential alternative experimental model to that previously developed in dogs. Adenosine produced a dose-dependent hepatic artery vasodilatation, but of lesser extent than that observed in dogs. A greatly diminished buffer response was observed in the pigs compared to that seen in dogs, and could not be replicated consistently. The adenosine uptake inhibitor dipyridamole did not potentiate responses to adenosine or the buffer response. It is concluded that the minipig is an unsuitable alternative model for the study of the hepatic artery buffer response.Abbreviations bw body weight - DPD dipyridamole - GDV gastroduodenal vein - HA hepatic artery - PV portal vein - PVO portal venous occlusion - PVP portal venous pressure - SE standard error  相似文献
