The abundance and composition of phytoplankton were investigated at six stations along a transect from the Barguzin River inflow to the central basin of Lake Baikal in August 2002 to clarify the effect of the river inflow on the phytoplankton community in the lake. The water temperature in the epilimnion was high near the shore at Station 1 (17.3°C), probably due to the higher temperature of the river water, and gradually decreased offshore at Station 6 (14.5°C). Thermal stratification developed at Stations 2–6, and a thermocline was observed at a 17–22-m depth at Stations 2–4 and an 8–12-m depth at Stations 5 and 6. The concentrations of nitrogen and phosphorus nutrients in the epilimnion at all stations were <1.0 μmol N l−1 and <0.16 μmol P l−1, respectively. Relatively high concentrations of nutrients (0.56–7.38 μmol N l−1 and 0.03–0.28 μmol P l−1) were detected in the deeper parts of the euphotic zone. Silicate was not exhausted at all stations (>20 μmol Si l−1). The chlorophyll a (chl. a) concentration was high (>10 μg l−1) near the shore at Station 1 and low (<3 μg l−1) at five other stations. The <2 μm fraction of chl. a in Stations 2–6 ranged between 0.80 and 1.85 μg l−1, and its contribution to total chl. a was high (>60%). In this fraction, picocyanobacteria were abundant at all stations and ranged between 5 × 104 and 5 × 105 cells ml−1. In contrast, chl. a in the >2 μm fraction varied significantly (0.14–11.17 μg l−1), and the highest value was observed at Station 1. In this fraction, the dominant phytoplankton was Aulacoseira and centric diatoms at Station 1 and Cryptomonas, Ankistrodesmus, Asterionella, and Nitzschia at Stations 2–6. The present study demonstrated the dominance of picophytoplankton in the pelagic zone, while higher abundance of phytoplankton dominated by diatoms was observed in the shallower littoral zone. These larger phytoplankters in the littoral zone probably depend on nutrients from the Barguzin River.  相似文献

Planktonic microbial community structure and classical food web were investigated in the large shallow eutrophic Lake Taihu (2338 km2, mean depth 1.9 m) located in subtropical Southeast China. The water column of the lake was sampled biweekly at two sites located 22 km apart over a period of twelve month. Site 1 is under the regime of heavy eutrophication while Site 2 is governed by wind-driven sediment resuspension. Within-lake comparison indicates that phosphorus enrichment resulted in increased abundance of microbial components. However, the coupling between total phosphorus and abundance of microbial components was different between the two sites. Much stronger coupling was observed at Site 1 than at Site 2. The weak coupling at Site 2 was mainly caused by strong sediment resuspension, which limited growth of phytoplankton and, consequently, growth of bacterioplankton and other microbial components. High percentages of attached bacteria, which were strongly correlated with the biomass of phytoplankton, especially Microcystis spp., were found at Site 1 during summer and early autumn, but no such correlation was observed at Site 2. This potentially leads to differences in carbon flow through microbial food web at different locations. Overall, significant heterogeneity of microbial food web structure between the two sites was observed. Site-specific differences in nutrient enrichment (i.e. nitrogen and phosphorus) and sediment resuspension were identified as driving forces of the observed intra-habitat differences in food web structure.  相似文献

1. A steady‐state model of carbon flows was developed to describe the summer planktonic food web in the surface mixed‐layer of the North Basin in Lake Biwa, Japan. This model synthesised results from numerous studies on the plankton of Lake Biwa. 2. An inverse analysis procedure was used to estimate missing flow values in a manner consistent with known information. Network analysis was applied to characterise emergent properties of the resulting food web. 3. The system strongly relied on flows related to detrital particles. Whereas primary production was mainly by phytoplankton >20 μm, microzooplankton were active and mainly ingested detritus and bacteria. 4. The main emergent property of the system was strong recycling, through either direct ingestion of non‐living material by zooplankton, or ingestion of bacteria after degradation of detritus to release dissolved organic carbon.  相似文献

In Lake Baikal, picocyanobacteria are the most important primary producers during the summer. Freshwater picocyanobacteria are discriminated into either the phycoerythrin (PE)-rich or the phycocyanin (PC)-rich types according to their pigment composition. The distributions of these two types of picocyanobacteria were investigated in Barguzin Bay. The PC-rich type accounted for >98% of the total picocyanobacteria at the station near the shore of the bay where river water flows directly in. In the offshore area of the lake, all of the picocyanobacteria cells were of the PE-rich type. In addition, the occurrence of the PC-rich type was restricted to the station, where the attenuation coefficient exceeded 0.25 m−1. Near the shore, where the turbidity was high (>1 NTU), the cell densities of both the PE- and PC-rich types increased away from the river mouth. This indicates that the PC-rich type cells grow near the shore of the bay where turbidity is high. Since the PC-rich type could not grow well when cells were incubated in offshore lake water, restricted distribution of the PC-rich type could also be explained by their growth capability. The present study clearly demonstrated the shift in the pigment type composition of picocyanobacteria from the coastal to the pelagic zone of Lake Baikal. The co-existence of the two pigment types probably enables the abundance of the picocyanobacterial community to be stable over a broader range of environmental conditions than would be possible for a single pigment type.  相似文献

We developed a mechanistic model of nutrient, phytoplankton, zooplankton and fish interactions to test the effects of phytoplankton food quality for herbivorous zooplankton on planktonic food web processes. When phytoplankton food quality is high strong trophic cascades suppress phytoplankton biomass, the zooplankton can withstand intense zooplanktivory, and energy is efficiently transferred through the food web sustaining higher trophic level production. Low food quality results in trophic decoupling at the plant-animal interface, with phytoplankton biomass determined primarily by nutrient availability, zooplankton easily eliminated by fish predation, and poor energy transfer through the food web. At a given nutrient availability, food quality and zooplanktivory interact to determine zooplankton biomass which in turn determines algal biomass. High food quality resulted in intense zooplankton grazing which favored fast-growing phytoplankton taxa, whereas fish predation favored slow-growing phytoplankton. These results suggest algal food quality for herbivorous zooplankton can strongly influence the nature of aquatic food web dynamics, and can have profound effects on water quality and fisheries production. The distribution of primary components of the microbial community (autotrophic pico- and nanoplankton, phototrophic bacteria, heterotrophic bacteria, microscopic fungi, heterotrophic flagellates, ciliates and heliozoa) in the water column of Lake Shira, a steppe brackish-water, stratified lake in Khakasia, Siberia (Russia), were assessed in midsummer. Bacterioplankton was the main component of the planktonic microbial community, accounting for 65.3 to 75.7% of the total microbial biomass. The maximum concentration of heterotrophic bacteria were recorded in the monimolimnion of the lake. Autotrophic microorganisms contributed more significantly to the total microbial biomass in the pelagic zone (20.2–26.5%) than in the littoral zone of the lake (8.7–14.9%). First of all, it is caused by development of phototrophic sulphur bacteria at the oxic-anoxic boundary. The concentrations of most aerobic phototrophic and heterotrophic microorganisms were maximal in the upper mixolimnion. Heterotrophic flagellates dominated the protozoan populations. Ciliates were minor component of the planktonic microbial community of the lake. Heterotrophic flagellates were the most diverse group of planktonic eucaryotes in the lake, which represented by 36 species. Facultative and obligate anaerobic flagellates were revealed in the monimolimnion. There were four species of Heliozoa and only three of ciliates in the lake.  相似文献

To define nanoflagellate-bacteria interactions and potential trophic levels within the microbial food web in the oligotrophic South China Sea, we conducted fourteen size-fractionation experiments in which seawater was filtered through 1, 2, 5, 10, 20, 60, and 200 μm membranes or meshes and the growth of four groups of picoplankton, Prochlorococcus, Synechococcus, high DNA heterotrophic bacteria, and low DNA heterotrophic bacteria were monitored in each filtrate after 24 hours of incubation. Removing grazers by filtration would relieve the grazing pressure on lower trophic levels which finally influenced the net growth rates of picoplankton. The growth patterns of Prochlorococcus and Synechococcus were similar, with higher growth rates in the < 1 μm or < 2 μm treatments, a second peak in the < 10 μm treatments and often a third peak in the < 200 μm treatments. The net growth rates of low DNA heterotrophic bacteria were little influenced by size-fractionation. Due to a subgroup of high DNA heterotrophic bacteria with larger size and higher DNA content which appeared to resist the grazing by < 5 μm nanoflagellates, the net growth rates of high DNA heterotrophic bacteria were higher in the < 2 μm or < 5 μm treatments with a second peak in the < 60 μm treatments. A general pattern of five potential trophic levels (< 2 μm, 2-5 μm, 5-10 μm, 10-60 μm, 60-200 μm) was revealed combining all the experiments, confirming the existence of multiple trophic levels within the microbial food web in the oligotrophic South China Sea.  相似文献

为预防千岛湖连续暴发了2a(1998—1999)的蓝藻水华和改善千岛湖水质,于2000年起在千岛湖开展了以人工放养鲢鳙和控制凶猛鱼类为主要措施的保水渔业试验。作为试验的主要研究内容之一,通过构建1999和2000年千岛湖生态系统的Ecopath模型,比较分析了实施保水渔业对千岛湖生态系统食物网结构及其相互作用的影响。结果表明:实施保水渔业,使千岛湖中的银鱼和鲤生物量减少,而鲌类(主要是蒙古鲌)、鲴类和大眼华鳊等增加;使各种鱼类的捕食者和食饵生态位重叠指数下降;各主要鱼类的相互作用中,鲢、鳙对鳡、鲌的促进作用增强,鳡对鲌的抑制作用及鲌对虾类、银鱼和鲤等以及银鱼对浮游动物的抑制作用减弱,鳙对银鱼、大眼华鳊对鲤的抑制作用增强。这些影响,使千岛湖食物网结构更趋合理,如底层碎屑食性鱼类如鲴类等的增加,有利于营养物的再循环和再利用,从而增强了水体对营养物的净化作用。  相似文献

1. In North America, the invasive predatory cladoceran Cercopagis pengoi was first detected in Lake Ontario. We explored the impact of Cercopagis on the lower food web of Lake Ontario through assessments of historical and seasonal abundance of the crustacean zooplankton, by conducting feeding experiments on the dominant prey of the invader, and by estimating its food requirements. 2. Between 1999 and 2001, a decrease in the abundance of dominant members of the Lake Ontario zooplankton community (Daphnia retrocurva, Bosmina longirostris and Diacyclops thomasi) coincided with an increase in the abundance of Cercopagis. Daphnia retrocurva populations declined despite high fecundity in all 3 years, indicating that food limitation was not responsible. Chlorophyll a concentration generally increased, concomitant with a decline in the herbivorous cladoceran zooplankton in the lake. 3. Laboratory experiments demonstrated that Cercopagis fed on small‐bodied species including D. retrocurva and B. longirostris. 4. Consumption demand of mid‐summer populations of Cercopagis, estimated from a bioenergetic model of the confamilial Bythotrephes, was sufficient to reduce crustacean abundance, although the degree of expected suppression varied seasonally and interannually. 5. Predatory effects exerted by Cercopagis on the Lake Ontario zooplankton, while initially very pronounced, have decreased steadily as the species became established in the lake.  相似文献

The survival rate, metabolic activity, and ability for growth of microbial communities of Lake Baikal have been first studied after exposure to extremely low temperatures (freeze-thawing) for different lengths of time. It has been shown that short-term freezing (1–3 days) inhibits the growth and activity of microbial communities. The quantity of microorganisms increased after 7-and 15-day freezing. In the periods of maximums, the total number of microorganisms in the test samples was twice as high as in the control. It was established that after more prolonged freezing the microorganisms required more time after thawing to adapt to new conditions. In the variants with 7-and 15-day freezing, the activities of defrosted microbial communities were three or more times higher than in the control. The survival rate and activity of Baikal microorganisms after freeze-thawing confirms the fact that the Baikal microbial communities are highly resistant to this type of stress impact.  相似文献

Changes in the complexity of planktonic food webs may be expected in future aquatic systems due to increases in sea surface temperature and an enhanced stratification of the water column. Under these conditions, the growth of unpalatable, filamentous, N2‐fixing cyanobacterial blooms, and their effect on planktonic food webs will become increasingly important. The planktonic food web structure in aquatic ecosystems at times of filamentous cyanobacterial blooms is currently unresolved, with discordant lines of evidence suggesting that herbivores dominate the mesozooplankton or that mesozooplankton organisms are mainly carnivorous. Here, we use a set of proxies derived from amino acid nitrogen stable isotopes from two mesozooplankton size fractions to identify changes in the nitrogen source and the planktonic food web structure across different microplankton communities. A transition from herbivory to carnivory in mesozooplankton between more eutrophic, near‐coastal sites and more oligotrophic, offshore sites was accompanied by an increasing diversity of microplankton communities with aging filamentous cyanobacterial blooms. Our analyses of 124 biotic and abiotic variables using multivariate statistics confirmed salinity as a major driver for the biomass distribution of non‐N2‐fixing microplankton species such as dinoflagellates. However, we provide strong evidence that stratification, N2 fixation, and the stage of the cyanobacterial blooms regulated much of the microplankton diversity and the mean trophic position and size of the metabolic nitrogen pool in mesozooplankton. Our empirical, macroscale data set consistently unifies contrasting results of the dominant feeding mode in mesozooplankton during blooms of unpalatable, filamentous, N2‐fixing cyanobacteria by identifying the at times important role of heterotrophic microbial food webs. Thus, carnivory, rather than herbivory, dominates in mesozooplankton during aging and decaying cyanobacterial blooms with hitherto uncharacterized consequences for the biogeochemical functions of mesozooplankton.  相似文献

An investigation of the microbial community of Lake Baikal by the methods of general and molecular microbiology showed that culturable bacterial strains are represented by various known genera. The lake water contains a great number of bacterial morphotypes, as revealed by electron microscopy, and a great diversity of nonculturable microorganisms belonging to different phylogenetic groups, as revealed by 16S rRNA gene fragment sequencing. The inference is made that the microbial community of Lake Baikal contains not only known species but also new bacterial species that are possibly endemic to the lake.  相似文献

Planktonic sculpins (Comephorus baicalensis and Comephorus dybowskii) are endemic to Lake Baikal, and their migration behavior is characterized by their strange movements, which occur only vertically. We investigated their detailed food sources at each growth stage by stable isotope analyses in combination with stomach content analysis. At all growth stages, both fishes and amphipods were the main diet for C. baicalensis, whereas amphipods alone were the main diet for C. dybowskii. Our results indicate that the relationship between the two species shifts from a competitive interaction to a predator–prey interaction with the growth stages of C. baicalensis.  相似文献

  • 1 Growth rates of two dominant Lake Baikal phytoplankton, the winter diatom Aulacoseira baicalensis and the summer cyanobacterium Synechocystis limnetica, were measured in the laboratory under varied temperature and light regimes to determine the potential role of these abiotic factors in seasonal species succession in the lake.
  • 2 Aulacoseira baicalensis grew best at low temperature and not at all above 8 °C. Its maximum instantaneous growth rate was 0.15 d‐1 recorded at 2–3 °C. Cells grew faster as temperature decreased, apparently in contrast to conventional Q10‐based temperature‐growth relationships.
  • 3 The picoplankter Synechocystis limnetica did not grow at 2–3 or 5–6 °C, but grew at a rate of 0.24 d‐1 at the highest incubation temperature of 17 °C. Maximum growth rate was 0.35 d‐1 at 8 °C.
  • 4 Saturation irradiances (Ik) for growth of Aulacoseira baicalensis and Synechocystis limnetica were near pre‐acclimation values of 40 µmol m‐2 s‐1. At temperatures conducive to growth, both phytoplankters grew at all irradiances tested, except for A. baicalensis which would not grow at values above 300 µmol m‐2 s‐1 at 8 °C.
  • 5 We conclude that temperature is a major driving force for the seasonal succession of species in Lake Baikal. Other factors, including vertical mixing of the water column and grazing by zooplankton, may also play important roles.

Chemical concentrations and distributions in an aquatic food web were studied to quantify the relative importance of chemical properties versus food web processes in determining exposure dynamics of organic contaminants in aquatic ecosystems. Five organochlorines were measured (Pentachlorobenzene QCB, Hexachlorobenzene HCB, Octachlorostyrene OCS, Dichlorodiphenyldichloroethylene DDE and Polychlorinated Biphenyls PCBs) in the food web of Lake St. Clair. Levels of QCB in aquatic organisms ranged from 1.0 to 25 µg kg–1 lipid, and levels of HCB ranged from 10 to 410 µg kg–1 lipid. More elevated concentrations of OCS (13 to 392 µg kg–1 lipid), DDE (162 to 11 986 µg kg–1 lipid) and PCB (650 to 64 900 µg kg–1 lipid) were observed. Organism — water equilibrium ratios were calculated for all species sampled to quantify the importance of food web processes in regulating contaminant exposure dynamics. Correlations of organism — water equilibrium ratios with body size were not significant for QCB, HCB and OCS (P>0.1), but were found to be significant for DDE and PCB (P<0.01).Results support the conclusion that both chemical properties and food web dynamics regulate the distribution and concentration of organochlorines in aquatic ecosystems. Food web processes are important, however, for chemicals, that are not metabolized and have octanol — water partition coefficients (log K ow) greater than 5.5.  相似文献

The phylogenetic relationship of the freshwater sponges (Porifera) in Lake Baikal is not well understood. A polyphyletic and/or monophyletic origin have been proposed. The (endemic) Baikalian sponges have been subdivided into two families: endemic Lubomirskiidae and cosmopolitan Spongillidae. In the present study, two new approaches have been made to resolve the phylogenetic relationship of Baikalian sponges; analysis of (1) nucleotide sequences from one mitochondrial gene, the cytochrome oxidase subunit I (COI) and of (2) one selected intron from the tubulin gene. Specimens from the following endemic Baikalian sponge species have been studied; Lubomirskia baicalensis , Baikalospongia intermedia, Baikalospongia recta , Baikalospongia bacillifera and Swartschewskia papyracea . They are all grouped to the family of Lubomirskiidae. Sequence comparisons were performed with the ubiquitously distributed freshwater sponge Spongilla lacustris (family Spongillidae) as well as with one marine sponge, Suberites domuncula . A sequence comparison * * The sequences reported here are being deposited in the EMBL data base. of the mitochondrial COI gene revealed a monophyletic grouping of the endemic Baikalian sponges with S. lacustris as the most related species to the common ancestor. The sequences of the COI gene from B. recta , B. intermedia , B. bacillifera and L. baicalensis were found to be identical and separated from those of S. lacustris and S. papyracea . In a second approach, the exon/intron sequences framing the intron‐2 of the sponge tubulin gene were chosen for the phylogenetic analysis. The intron sequences were aligned and used for construction of a phylogenetic tree. This analysis revealed again a monophyletic grouping with S. lacustris as the closest related species to the common ancestor. It is concluded that the Baikalian sponges, which have been studied here, are of monophyletic origin. Furthermore, the data suggest that the endemic species S. papyracea is the phylogenetically oldest, extant, endemic Baikalian sponge species.  相似文献

Nitrogen dynamics and microbial food web structure were characterized in subtropical, eutrophic, large (2,338 km2), shallow (1.9 m mean depth), and polymictic Lake Taihu (China) in Sept–Oct 2002 during a cyanobacterial bloom. Population growth and industrialization are factors in trophic status deterioration in Lake Taihu. Sites for investigation were selected along a transect from the Liangxihe River discharge into Meiliang Bay to the main lake. Water column nitrogen and microbial food web measurements were combined with sediment–water interface incubations to characterize and identify important processes related to system nitrogen dynamics. Results indicate a gradient from strong phosphorus limitation at the river discharge to nitrogen limitation or co-limitation in the main lake. Denitrification in Meiliang Bay may drive main lake nitrogen limitation by removing excess nitrogen before physical transport to the main lake. Five times higher nutrient mineralization rates in the water column versus sediments indicate that sediment nutrient transformations were not as important as water column processes for fueling primary production. However, sediments provide a site for denitrification, which, along with nitrogen fixation and other processes, can determine available nutrient ratios. Dissimilatory nitrate reduction to ammonium (DNRA) was important, relative to denitrification, only at the river discharge site, and nitrogen fixation was observed only in the main lake. Reflecting nitrogen cycling patterns, microbial food web structure shifted from autotrophic (phytoplankton dominated) at the river discharge to heterotrophic (bacteria dominated) in and near the main lake.  相似文献
