Two limpet species occur intertidally on subantarctic SouthGeorgia, the patellid Nacella concinna and the siphonarlid Kerguelenellalateralis. N. concinna is confined to the lower shore closeto LWS; K. lateralis occurs in middle shore pools, so theirdistributions do not overlap. N. concinna has a much narrowerthermal niche (–12.9°C to +15.6°C) than K. lateralis(–17.8°C to +31.8°C). Environmental data are presentedto show that the upper lethal temperature of N. concinna islow enough to prevent the limpet living higher on the shore.Both limpet species are slow-moving, but K. lateralis showsincreasing speed with rising temperature, peaking at 15–20°C.In contrast, N. concinna moves actively down to –1.9°C(when sea water freezes), but there is a steady decrease inspeed of locomotion above +2°C. Locomotion ceases at 14°Cin N. concinna (c.f. 30°C in K. lateralis). Both speciesexhibit very low tenacities, but in N. concinna tenacity decreaseswith increasing shell length. In K. lateralis there is no effectof temperature on tenacity. Both species show a positive allometricrelationship between foot area and shell length. N. concinnafeeds upon microbial films and microepiflora, but K. lateraliseats colonial diatoms and Enteromorpha bulbosa. Observationson shell middens of the kelp gull Larus dominicanus showed thatthe gulls did not eat K. lateralis, though they ate great quantitiesof the less accessible N. concinna. Gulls ate N. concinna assmall as 11 mm shell length (within the size range of K. lateralis).Experiments on gulls demonstrated an unwillingness to eat K.lateralis, probably because the siphonariid extrudes a viscidwhite mucus when the foot is touched. The anatomy of Cornirostra (new genus) pellucida (Laseron),a marine Indo-West Pacific gastropod, is described and is shownto be similar to that of the northern hemisphere, freshwaterValvatidae. There are, however, several differences betweenCornirostra and valvatids, notably in details of the anatomyof the reproductive system, the morphology of the head-foot,the spawn and in radular characters that warrant family-levelseparation for Cornirostra. This paper is an account of the megaspores borne by four speciesof Carboniferous Lycopod cones, referred to the genus Lepidostrobus.The megaspores (assigned to the genus Triletes) have been knownisolated for more than twenty years, but the identities of theirparent cone species have not previously been established. Thisstudy suggests the limits of variation that can reasonably beallowed in a ‘spore species’. Three of the conespecies are emended in the light of their spore content, anda new species (Lepidostrobus allantonensis) is described. Usingthe megaspores as a diagnostic cone character, it has provedpossible to correlate a species of isolated cone (Lepidostrobusdudius Binney) with the tree which bore it (Lepidodendron smileKidst.). A cone previously attributed on doubtful evidence toBothrodendron is shown to bear megaspores indistinguishablefrom those of a species reliably attributed to Lepidodendron,suggesting that the attribution to Bothrodendron is incorrect.  相似文献

Two new species of Horaiclavus, lacking radula, venom glandand proboscis, are described. The genus is placed in the subfamilyCrassispirinae (Turridae). Both species possess a peculiar foregutstructure, the muscular rhynchodaeal outgrowth situated in therhynchocoel. The possible function of the rhynchodaeal outgrowthis discussed. Other studied species of Horaiclavus possess aradula of a typical ‘crassispirine’ type but lackthe outgrowth. The anatomy of the foregut of the new speciesis superficially similar to that of Zemacies excelsa (Turridae:Zemaciinae), which also possesses an additional structure ofthe rhynchocoel, namely the ‘pyriform gland’. Conchologically,there is no resemblance between Zemacies and Horaiclavus andit is concluded that similar foregut arrangement appeared independentlyin both lineages. A new monotypic subfamily Zemaciinae was erectedmostly on the basis of the unique foregut arrangement of Zemaciesexcelsa. We express doubts concerning the importance of thesecharacters in establishing a new taxon of subfamilial rank andtherefore the validity of the subfamily Zemaciinae. Paralarvae of the family Gonatidae were sampled in the Gulfof Alaska during spring 2001–2003. Taxonomic characterswere determined to allow identification of the specimens tospecies. The dorsal head chromatophore pattern (DHCP) was themost robust character and allowed identification to speciesfor the first time without requiring the removal and examinationof the radula. Six different DHCPs were found among the sixspecies in the study area. The 1140 specimens collected consistedof the following six species: Berryteuthis anonychus (759),Berryteuthis magister (71), Gonatopsis borealis (155), Gonatuskamtschaticus (1), Gonatus madokai (4) and Gonatus onyx (143).The specimens had a size range of 3.0–20.63 mm dorsalmantle length with the majority of specimens smaller than 10 mm.All species showed an increasing trend in abundance from theshelf (0–200 m) to the slope (200–1000 m)to the basin (>1000 m) except G. onyx in 2001 and 2002.Wide variation in distribution and abundance was found for thefour most abundant species; however, in general, B. anonychuswas most abundant and widely distributed, followed by Gonatopisborealis, Gonatus onyx and B. magister. Salt Tolerance in the Triticeae: K/Na Discrimination in Aegilops Species   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1  
Inorganic ion concentrations were measured in the leaves ofAegilops species growing in 50 or 75 mol m–3 NaCl (+2.5or 3.75 mol m–3 CaCl2). The low leaf Na and high leafK concentrations characteristic of the enhanced K/Na discriminationcharacter, originally found in Aegilops squarrosa and in hexaploidwheat, were also found in other Aegilops species containingthe D genome, but not in Ae. ventricosa. The S genome diploidAegilops species (section Sitopsis) all lacked the enhancedK/Na discrimination trait, as did the C genome species Ae. caudataand the N genome species Ae. uniaristata. Most of the U genomespecies (section Polyeides), except Ae. biuncialis, Ae. kotschyiand Ae. variabilis, also exhibited the trait. Examination ofamphiploid hybrids suggested that the trait was dominant incrosses involving Ae. squarrosa or Ae. umbellulata with otherspecies in which the trait was absent. The structure of the community of appendicularians was describedby multivariate analyses throughout a seasonal cycle on thecentral Cantabrian coast. It is shown by correlation and principalcomponents analysis that the appendicularian species may bearranged in a successional sequence in relative abundance thatis closely coupled to a temperature gradient. This sequencestarts with Fritillaria borealis, which exhibits highest relativeabundance during January, being sequentially followed by Oikopleuradioica, Fritillaria pellucida, Oikopleura fusiformis and Oikopleuralongicauda. This species numerically dominated the communityfrom September to December. Sea surface temperature and thetemperature at the depth of the chlorophyll maximum were bothreliable predictors of the species composition of the community.However, only the latter provided an adequate explanation forthe persistence of cryophilic communities in stratified oceanicenvironments and the dominance of thermophilic communities afterthe autumn mixing period. Under stratified conditions, surfacetemperatures are high (up to 21°C), but temperatures atthe depth of the chlorophyll maximum are low (<15°C).These differences disappear after the autumn mixing, when thewater column exhibits a uniform temperature profile (16°C).Critically, however, although there is a sharp decline in surfacetemperature, water at the depth of the chlorophyll maximum iswarmer than during stratification. A simple conceptual modelis proposed to account for these features and predictions aremade regarding the vertical distribution of appendiculariansduring stratification. The relevance of non-anthropomorphictemperature measures, such as the temperature at the depth ofthe chlorophyll maximum, for other zooplankton groups is alsodiscussed.  相似文献

The Atlantic species of the marine bivalve genus Dacrydium arereviewed, with particular emphasis on their hinge and protoconchcharacters. The basic groundplan of a Dacrydium comprises afunctional primary ligament, a paired series of primary teeth,and a posterior row of secondary teeth separated from the latterby a secondary ligament; this can be transformed into a singleseries either by loss of the secondary ligament and mergingprimary and secondary teeth, or by loss of secondary teeth andligament through paedomorphosis. Twelve species are recognized, of which eleven are illustrated.One abyssal species is not separable morphologically from theIndian Ocean D. speculum Poutiers, 1989 and is new to the Atlantic;four new species (D. wareni, D. dauvini, D. filiferum and D.balgimi) are described; a Caribbean form which is hardly distinctfrom the Eastern Pacific D. elegantu-lum Soot-Ryen, 1955, isdescribed as a new subspecies D. e. hendersoni. The larvae are brooded in D. hyalinum (Mon-terosato, 1875),D. viviparum Ockelmann, 1983 and D. balgimi. The brooding specieshave larger larvae (protoconch 210 to 315 µm long) thanthe non-brooding (protoconch 120 to 150 µm long), andreach a smaller adult size (1.4 to 3 mm instead of 4.5–5mm). A phylogenetic reconstruction is attempted using parsimonyanalysis of hinge and shell characters as well as the brooding/nonbrooding character. Metapenaeus ensis was spawned and laboratory cultured untilthe post-larval stage to illustrate and describe its embryonicand larval development. Fecundities ranged between 454 000 and689 000 eggs, and {small tilde}99.2% of spawned eggs hatchedafter 12 h and 40 min at 33.5 p.p.t. and 29.0-29.1°C. Sixnaupliar, three protozoeal, three mysis and one post-larvalstages were noted. A minimum of {small tilde}10 days (249 h20 min) from the time of hatching were required to completethe larval stages by subsisting only on Chaeioceros gracilisand Tetraselmis tetrathele at varying temperature and salinityof 28.1-29.8°C and 33.5—34.5 p.p.t., respectively.The embryonic and larval developmental stages of M.ensis aregenerally similar to those of other known penaeid species, exceptfor the size and structure of diagnostic characters, setationof appendages and duration of metamorphoses.  相似文献

The objective of this study was to quantify the respiratoryrequirements and oxygen consumption rates for seasonal hydromedusaepopulations in the North Inlet estuary, Georgetown, SC, USA.Respiration rates were determined for hydromedusae collectedin January 2006, 2007 and July 2006 using microrespirometry.The numerically dominant gelatinous predators were Nemopsisbachei (January 2006 and 2007) and Bougainvillia muscus (July2006). Seasonal oxygen consumption rates were low (0.80–1.27µmol O2 g–1 h–1). Q10 values were high duringJanuary 2006 and July 2006 (4.7), but low during January 2007(0.5), suggesting hydromedusae were sensitive to the exposuretemperatures (7–34°C) in this study and well adaptedto the temperature range encountered in this estuary. Moreover,the oxygen consumption rates during July 2006 showed significantdifferences between the two species. The allometric relationshipbetween respiration rate and hydromedusae weight differed seasonally.Our findings suggest hydromedusae can persist in hypoxic conditionsand may partially explain the frequently observed increase inthese cnidarians under conditions of low dissolved oxygen concentrations.  相似文献

Stamen numbers were counted on flowers from a collection ofcherries, sweet cultivated varieties of Prunus avixan and P.cerasus. The most frequent numbers were 34 and 39–40,no doubt representing seven and eight times the petal number.The character is apparently genetically controlled, clones beinghighly uniform within themselves but differing from others. On the average, flowers of tetraploid Morellos (P. cerasus)had lower numbers than diploid sweet cherries (P. avium), whiletetraploid Dukes were intermediate; this accords with the suspectedhybrid origin of the Dukes. Stamen number and variation wasnot associated with economic characters, but there was a tendencyfor varieties in more frequent incompatibility groups I–VIto have lower values than groups VII–XII.  相似文献

This is essentially a preliminary report on the revision ofsubgenus Lissachatina of the African land snail family Achatinidae.It extends the conchological revisionary work of J.C. Bequaert(1950) along the complementary line of comparative anatomicalstudies of the reproductive tracts. This is directed towardthe goal of a better understanding of phylo-geny in this family.Species emphasized are Achatina albopicta E.A. Smith,1878; A.allisa Reeve, 1849; A. fulica Bowdich, 1822; A. loveridgei Clench& Archer, 1930; A. zanzibarica Bourguignat, 1879, and thenew species A. eleanorae. Relegated tosynonymy are A. albicansPfeiffer, 1851; A. delorioli Bonnet, 1864; and A. iredalei Preston,1910. Tangible anatomical characters separate subgenera Lissachatinaand Achatina. A. capelloi Furtado, 1886; A. craveni E.A. Smith,1881; and A. connollyi Preston, 1912 are transferred from Lissachatinato Achatina s.s. Other transfers are in progress. A multiple character analysis was undertaken of a broadly representativesample of three species:Canis lupus (wolf), C. latrans (coyote),and C. familiaris (dog). These species are clearly and significantlydistinguished by the technique of linear discrimination. Theanalysis provides a basis for the identification of skulls notobviously distinguishable by size or other diagnostic characters. Early populations of Canis n. niger and C. n. gregoryi (redwolf) are compared with the three species above and are foundto form a cluster with lupus and to be sharply distinct fromthe other two species. Additional comparisons show that whilelupus lycaon and niger both overlap with lupus, they are distinctfrom each other. This entire cluster is quite distinct fromlatrans, with niger being the farthest removed. A sample populationof C. n. gregoiyi, from the edge of the extending range of C.latrans, was examined and found to show too great a range ofvariation to be attributed to a single species.  相似文献

Background and Aims The organization of rRNA genes incultivated Plantago ovata Forsk. and several of its wild allieswas analysed to gain insight into the phylogenetic relationshipsof these species in the genus which includes some 200 species. • Methods Specific primers were designed to amplify theinternal transcribed spacer (ITS1 and ITS2) regions from sevenPlantago species and the resulting fragments were cloned andsequenced. Similarly, using specific primers, the 5S rRNA genesfrom these species were amplified and subsequently cloned. Fluorescencein-situ hybridization (FISH) was used for physical mapping of5S and 45S ribosomal RNA genes. • Results The ITS1 region is 19–29 bp longer thanthe ITS2 in different Plantago species. The 5S rRNA gene-repeatingunit varies in length from 289 to 581 bp. Coding regions arehighly conserved across species, but the non-transcribed spacers(NTS) do not match any database sequences. The clone from thecultivated species P. ovata was used for physical mapping ofthese genes by FISH. Four species have one FISH site while threehave two FISH sites. In P. lanceolata and P. rhodosperma, the5S and 45S (18S-5·8S-25S) sites are coupled. • Conclusions Characterization of 5S and 45S rRNA geneshas indicated a possible origin of P. ovata, the only cultivatedspecies of the genus and also the only species with x = 4, froma species belonging to subgenus Psyllium. Based on the studiesreported here, P. ovata is closest to P. arenaria, althoughon the basis of other data the two species have been placedin different subgenera. FISH mapping can be used as an efficienttool to help determine phylogenetic relationships in the genusPlantago and show the interrelationship between P. lanceolataand P. lagopus.  相似文献

The razor clam Ensis arcuatus (Jeffreys, 1865) is distributedfrom Norway to Spain and along the British coast, where it livesburied in sand in low intertidal and subtidal areas. This workis the first study to research the embryology and larval developmentof this species of razor clam, using light and scanning electronmicroscopy. A new method, consisting of changing water levelsusing tide simulations with brief dry periods, was developedto induce spawning in this species. The blastula was the firstmotile stage and in the gastrula stage the vitelline coat waslost. The shell field appeared in the late gastrula. The trochophoredeveloped by about 19 h post-fertilization (hpf) (19°C).At 30 hpf the D-shaped larva showed a developed digestive systemconsisting of a mouth, a foregut, a digestive gland followedby an intestine and an anus. Concentrations of ions were measured in the youngest fully-expandedleaves of Triticum aestivum, T. durum, Hordeum vulgare, H. spontaneum,Secale cereale, and Aegilops squarrosa accessions grown in hydroponicculture in the presence of salt (NaCl+CaCl2). Triticum aestivum,Secale cereale, and Ae. squarrosa had the low leaf Na and highleaf K concentrations typical of plants which contain the enhancedK/Na discrimination character originally found in Ae. squarrosa.T. durum and the Hordeum species did not have this character.The better growth of H. vulgare than of T. durum with similarsalt concentrations in the youngest fully-expanded leaves maybe a result of better compartmentation of Na, Cl, and K betweendifferent tisssues or between different compartments withincells. The enhanced K/Na discrimination character was expressedin disomic addition lines of H. vulgare chromosomes in Triticumaestivum. The H. vulgare variety Herta and its slender mutantboth had similar leaf cation concentrations, although they differedin growth rate when grown at 60 mol m–3 NaCl. H. vulgareand T. durum seedlings grown in the absence of monovalent cationsaccumulated more 22Na in their shoots than seedlings of otherspecies when incubated in 1.0 mol m–3 NaCl labelled with22Na. The electrochemical potential difference for each dissociationstate of malic acid across the tonoplast of leaf cells was examinedin two CAM plants, Graptopetalum paraguayense and Kalanchoëdaigremontiana. The concentration of malic acid in each dissociationstate was estimated from an analysis of pH and concentrationsof ionic species that included calcium, malate and isocitrate.The vacuoles contained 30–40 mM isocitrate and 50–70mM calcium in G. paraguayense, and 20–30 mM isocitrateand 70–100 mM calcium in K. daigremontiana. For the calculationof the pattern of dissociation of malic acid, the formationof chelates of calcium with malate and isocitrate, which havedifferent stability constants depending on the dissociationof the acids, were also taken into consideration. The vacuolarconcentrations of the divalently dissociated form of malic acid(mal2– were 4–7 mM and 1-3 mM in G. paraguayenseand in K. daigremontiana, respectively. To obtain informationabout the cytoplasmic concentration of malate, the apparentinhibition constant for malate of phosphoenolpyruvate carboxylasewas measured. It was about 330 µM in the dark period and60 µM in the light period. Considering an inside-positivemembrane potential, we conclude that mal2– can be takenup passively into the vacuole during the dark period and canbe released passively from the vacuole during the light period.Two types of channel (the "SV-type" channel and a novel "MU-type"channel) which we found recently in G. paraguayense [Iwasakiet al. (1992) Plant Physiol. 98: 1494] are probably involvedin the uptake and the release of malate in the diurnal CAM rhythm.The existence of a large pH-buffering capacity due to isocitricacid in the vacuole allows the accumulation of a large amountof malic acid during the diurnal CAM rhythm. Growth and production of the temperate C4 species Cyperus longusL. was measured throughout a growing season in an establishedplot in Eastern Ireland. The maximum standing live biomass reachedwas 2·5 kg m–2. Estimates of unit leaf rate (ULR)and leaf area index (LAI) were made. The product of these quantitiesgave the crop growth rate (CGR) each week. C. longus was foundto maintain high values of LAI throughout the summer, with amaximum value of about 13 in early August. CGR reached a peakin early July. The optimum LAI was 11·6. Temperaturesat five levels in the plant canopy, and the amount of solarradiation intercepted by the canopy were measured continuouslyduring the summer. The mean daily rate of leaf extension waspositively correlated with the mean daily air temperature abovethe canopy but the temperature coefficient of the process waslow compared with other temperate species. The percentage ofsolar radiation intercepted by the canopy increased rapidlyin early summer, and canopy closure had occurred by mid-June.Rates of net photosynthesis were measured on young and old leafmaterial in situ at the time of peak LAI. In young leaves themaximum rates of net photosynthesis were higher than those publishedfor a range of temperate C3 species, but similar to those foundin another temperate C4 species, Spartina townsendii.
