The embryonic-larval development (at 3°C) of a hybrid between sympatric lake forms of Arctic char Salvelinus alpinus complex (large females of Dryagin’s char x male goggle-eyed char) from the polar mountain Lake Sobachye (the Norilo-Pyasina water system, Taimyr) was studied. No morphological disturbances were found in the embryonic membrane during development. After hatching, because of yolk sac soaking and blood circulation disturbances along its vessels, about 15% of specimens perished. The most mass disturbances in the development of free embryos and larvae that were manifested in the body curvature, loss of mobility, and subsequent death of a greater proportion of specimens were caused by modifications of differentiation of mesenchymal cells responsible for the axial skeleton formation. It is suggested that anomalies in osteogenesis and a high variation of age when dermal cranial bones (praeoperculum and frontale) appear that bear seismosensory system canal are related to the conflict of genetic programs of the development of parental forms. The rate of embryonic larval development of hybrid specimens exceeds that in the lake small form of Arctic char from Lake Davatchan (Transbaikalia) reared under the same conditions. The reproductive isolation of sympatric Dryagin’s char and goggle-eyed char in Lake Sobachye is provided by both pre- and postcopulation mechanisms. A possible mechanism of formation of reproductive isolation of sympatric forms related to colonization by them of a deep-water biotope is discussed.  相似文献

Biological characteristics in the deepwater dwarf form of Arctic charr Salvelinus alpinus from Lake Davatchan, Transbaikalia, are described. In nine from fifteen attempts of artificial insemination of eggs from a female by sperm from a male, developing eggs are obtained. Embryonic and larval development is described at the initial temperature 1.6–3.6°C and subsequent (from early gastrulation to the transition of larvae to exogenous feeding) average temperature 4.4 and 8.6°C. To take into account the data obtained previously (Pavlov et al., 1990, 1993b), the comparison of early ontogeny is conducted between the dwarf and small forms of charr from Lake Davatchan and the charr from Lake Leprindokan (two lakes are separated by the ridge 8 km in width). A substantial similarity in early ontogeny between the dwarf and small forms of charr from Lake Davatchan suggests that genes controlling development of the embryos and prelarvae until the transition of the young to exogenous feeding have not been subjected to natural selection determining a considerable differentiation between two forms and their reproductive isolation. New data on fish populations of a closed desert watershed of Mongolia were obtained in 1990 and 1991. For this region periodic droughts, with the accompanying disappearance of lakes and some parts of rivers, are typical. Two forms of a Cyprinid species Oreoleuciscus humilis (dwarf Altai osman) occur in this region during wet periods which usually last for 10-30 years. The dwarf form, is characterized by a maximum SL of 200 mm and early maturation (SL = 70 mm, four years of age). It inhabits small desert rivers in dry periods which last for 3–5 years and both rivers and the riparian zone of lakes during wet periods. The larger lake form occurs only in lakes during the wet periods. It can attain a maximum size of 450 mm and matures in six years, SL = 200 mm. These two forms of O. humilis differ in feeding habits, rates of growth, and morphology. The dwarf form feeds mainly on insect larvae and on plants. The lake form consumes the same food items until it reaches 180 mm SL and then becomes piscivorous. Populations of O. humilis in lakes are restored after a dry period, originating anew from river populations of the dwarf form.Currently there is a transition from a dry period to a wet one. Orog-Nur (one of the lakes of Lake Valley) has been filling with water since 1990. In July 1991 the depth of this lake reached 0.5–1.0 m and fish were found in the lake. The large individuals of dwarf form which came to the lake from the Tuyn-Gol River became cannibals, and their growth rate increased rapidly. The homogeneous environment and low food supply in the restored lakes are suggested to be the main causes of these phenomena.  相似文献

Two morphologically and ecologically distinct forms of smelt, Osmerus, reside sympatrically in Lake Utopia, south-western New Brunswick, Canada. The ‘normal-sized’ form matures at greater than 200 mm standard length, averages about 31–33 gill rakers, and spawns in lake outlets. By contrast, the ‘dwarf-sized’ form matures at less than 150 mm standard length, averages 34–36 gill rakers, and spawns in small streams 3–5 weeks later than the normal form. We tested whether these sympatric forms represented ecological polymorphism within a single population or two reproductively isolated demes by assaying variation within and between forms by mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA) restriction site and nuclear minisatellite DNA analyses. Analysis of smelt mtDNA with twelve restriction enzymes resolved ten composite genotypes (differing by an average 0.27% sequence divergence) which differed markedly in frequency between the forms. Net percentage sequence divergence between the forms was O.l6%. A Wagner parsimony/ bootstrapping analysis of the restriction site presence/absence matrix, however, suggested that there were no significant distinctions between dwarf and normal smelt based on the phylogeny of composite genotypes. Hybridization studies of genomic DNA digests with a minisatellite probe indicated both that nuclear restriction fragment differentiation and the frequency of specific fragments differed significantly between the forms. Significant genetic differentiation between the sympatric forms demonstrates that they are distinct gene pools and reproductively isolated. Our molecular evidence for reproductive isolation between dwarf and normal smelt in Lake Utopia, coupled with the persistent morphological and ecological differentiation between them, argues strongly that they are behaving as distinct species. The Lake Utopia Osmerus populations provide further illustration of the potential for rapid differentiation to the level of biological species in postglacial environments.  相似文献

Variation at eight microsatellite loci was studied in Arctic charr Salvelinus alpinus complex from five Transbaikalian mountain lakes. Samples from three lakes included two sympatric charr forms (dwarf and small) differing in trophic specialization, morphology and life cycle parameters. Sympatric forms were genetically closer to each other than to charr from other lakes which evidences their independent origin in each of these lakes as the result of sympatric speciation. In each lake, gene pools of sympatric forms were segregated to a different degree (estimates of F ST varying from 0.030–0.184 and those of ρ ST varying from 0.119–0.359). Hierarchical analysis of allelic frequencies variance (AMOVA) in Arctic charr from Lake Baikal, the Vitim, and the Olekma basins showed that variation among and within these basins accounted for 19.5% of the interpopulational variance each. In the AMOVA design, investigating differences among sympatric forms in three lakes these differences accounted for 7.1% of the total variance.  相似文献

Bile acids have been implicated as chemical signals in spawning behaviour of lake char (Salvelinus namaycush). In this study, we investigated olfactory responses of lake char to bile acids by using the electro-olfactogram recording. Lake char detected 9 out of 38 bile acids tested at thresholds 0.02–0.5 nM. The most stimulatory included chenodeoxycholic acid, cholic acid, taurochenodeoxycholic acid, taurocholic acid, and taurolithocholic acid 3α-sulphate. Structure–activity analysis indicated that substituents in the side chain or hydroxyl sulphation were determinant elements for the recognition of individual bile acid receptors, while the position and orientation of hydroxyls or the type of amidation were important for effective stimulation. Three distinct types of concentration–response relationships were found, representing free, taurine- or glycine-amidated, and 3α-sulphated bile acids. Cross-adaptation and binary mixture experiments revealed the presence of multiple olfactory receptors for bile acids. Lake char were also capable of detecting petromyzonol sulphate at 1 nM, possibly via its own receptors. Our study further showed that the olfactory responses to bile acids were independent of those of known odorants including amino acids, prostaglandins and gonadal steroids. We conclude that lake char possess multiple olfactory receptors capable of discriminating bile acids produced and released by conspecifics.  相似文献

Based on long-term materials, spawning, postspawning, and downstream migrations of the Lower Volga sterlet Acipenser ruthenus were studied. The dates, extent, pattern (two-step and one-step) and main parameters of the spawning and postspawning migrations of the previously separated three populations of the Lower Volga starlet—Volgograd and eastern and western delta ones were established. The main differences of the downstream migration of this potanadromous species from that of anadromous species of acipenserids were revealed. It was found that, after downstream migration, juveniles of sterlet form a continuous chain of aggregations from the dam of the Volgograd Hydraulic Power System to the Caspian Sea. Each link of this chain acts as a center of formation of local groups of sterlet that are components of the distinguished populations. It is shown that the observed distribution of sterlet in the lower reaches of the Volga is determined by the location of the spawning grounds of individual populations and the extent of downstream migrations of prolarvae and larvae. The total extent of migrations of sterlet is small (it does not exceed 250 km), which is a cause of the relative isolation of the previously distinguished populations. The stocks of Volgograd sterlet are exhausted at the present time; the recovery of its stock is possible, first of all, at the expense of a decrease in illegal fishing. The resources of the eastern and western delta populations of sterlet are in a satisfactory condition.  相似文献

Due to extensive cannibalism, Arctic char (Salvelinus alpinus (L.)) often represent the two highest trophic levels in Arctic freshwater ecosystem where Arctic char often is the only freshwater fish present. There is a general lack of char stock size and production estimates from Arctic lakes although high catchability and late maturation of large piscivorous individuals raise considerable management challenges because large growing forms are a valued resource. Here, we use mark-recapture to estimate the biomass of both invertebrate feeding dwarfs (60–150 mm) and their cannibalistic conspecifics (>150 mm) in a small Arctic lake at Bear Island (74.5°N, 19.0°E; 11.3 ha; mean depth 1.8 m). Biomass was 10.1 and 2.0 kg ha−1 and production was 2.1 and 0.5 kg ha−1 yr−1 for dwarfs and cannibals, respectively. All the production of invertebrate feeding small char was removed by the cannibals. The low production of the Arctic lake ecosystems combined with high catchability of large piscivorous char indicates that these stocks may be particularly vulnerable to exploitation. We finally point out the similarity between Arctic and sub-arctic alpine populations of Arctic char in production and life-history parameters.  相似文献

Müggelsee, a shallow eutrophic lake (Berlin, Germany), has been subject to global warming and concurrent reductions of anthropogenic nutrient loading during the past decades. Here, we focus on the recent increase in abundance of Dreissena polymorpha larvae. We aimed at ascertaining whether the change in abundance of larvae was driven by changes in climate, especially by climate warming, and/or by the concurrent changes in trophic state of the lake. Both the numbers of small, newly developed larvae and their lengths have increased in recent years, suggesting that conditions for overall reproductive success have improved. The timing of the increase in abundance of larvae was matched by changes in nutrient loading and phytoplankton biomass, induced by a reduced inflow of nutrients into the lake. Besides a correlation between the first appearance of larvae each year and the timing of the requisite temperature for first spawning (12°C), no relationship between changes in water temperature and abundance, length and survival rates of larvae was found. However, a sudden drop in abundance of larvae in 2003 may be primarily attributed to low dissolved oxygen conditions during an unusually long period of stratification, induced by anomalous meteorological conditions. The increase in length and survival rates of larvae was most likely due to changes in food composition, which followed the decrease in nutrient availability, and to changes in the occurrence of planktivorous fish. The results suggest that the first appearance of larvae per year and the decline in abundance of larvae in 2003 were driven by climatic influences, while the overall increase in abundance and length of D. polymorpha larvae in Müggelsee was more likely caused by changes in the trophic state of the lake rather than by climate warming. Calypogeia sphagnicola is one of nine species of the genus Calypogeia known in Europe. Occurrence of the species is closely connected with peat bogs. Nowadays, two forms of this species are distinguished—C. sphagnicola f. sphagnicola and C. sphagnicola f. paludosa. The results of the present study, based on two classes of markers—isozymes and sequences of chloroplast genom (trnH-psbA, rpoC1)—unanimously support the genetic differentiation within the taxon and show that the present-day forms represent genetically distinct species. Phylogenetic analysis resolved two lineages that correspond with the present-day forms with high bootstrap support, which differ in ploidy level: C. sphagnicola f. sphagnicola is haploid, whereas C. sphagnicola f. paludosa is a diploid form. Allopolyploid origin of the diploid form was revealed by the isozyme pattern. Nei’s genetic distance between the two present-day forms of C. sphagnicola was 0.472. The forms in Poland have an allopatric pattern of geographic distribution: C. sphagnicola f. sphagnicola occurs exclusively in the lowlands of the northern part of the country on raised peat bogs, whereas C. sphagnicola f. paludosa is found only in the mountains of southern Poland, mainly in the subalpine zone, where it grows on Sphagnum-Polytrichum hummocks on the upper part of north-facing slopes. Plants regarded in this study as C. sphagnicola f. sphagnicola morphologically correspond to the syntype specimen of C. sphagnicola.  相似文献

Chars of the genus Salvelinus, inhabiting lakes and lake-river systems, comprise morphological and ecological forms whose taxonomic status is under dispute. In the present work, we have examined genetic variation and divergence in various chars from the Kronotsky lake basin: the lacustrine chars (white, nose, and longhead) and riverine Dolly Varden Salvelinus malma. The study was conducted using analysis of allozyme and microsatellite loci, myogens, RAPD, and restriction analysis of two mtDNA segments. The estimates of heterozygosity at allozyme and microsatellite loci were similar to the corresponding parameters in populations of northern Dolly Varden and Arctic char. Heterozygote deficit was recorded in both samples of separate forms, and in the total sample of all chars from Kronotsky Lake. For allozyme and microsatellite loci, appreciable genetic differentiation among the samples of different char forms was found, which was comparable to that among the spatially isolated populations of northern Dolly Varden. This result indicates reproductive isolation among the char forms examined. However, this isolation is not complete, because no fixed differences between the forms by any of the genetic systems analyzed were found. In some polymorphic populations of Arctic charr in Transbaikalia, an individual can transform from a smaller to larger size form during their lifetime as a result of accelerated growth that follows a period of slow growth and reproduction as a small size form. Alternating periods of slow and fast growth are reflected in growth layer patterns visible in fin ray cross sections. Stained microtome fin ray cross sections were used to reveal the incidence of transformations from one form to another. Data were collected from 14 northern Transbaikalian lakes containing two or three sympatric Arctic charr forms (‘dwarf’, ‘small’, and ‘large’) exhibiting varying levels of morphological separation. Individuals recruited from the dwarf or small form were found in varying proportions among the small and/or large form in 12 lakes. Small or large form charr that grew without noticeable acceleration to the adult size typical of the form or experienced accelerated growth as juveniles prior to maturation were also observed. There were no transformations between sympatric forms that differed in the length and number of gill rakers and in some other meristic characters. Results indicate that in the region under study, transformations of sympatric Arctic charr size forms are a widespread, but not a ubiquitous, phenomenon. Such transformations reflect the plasticity of the developmental channels of the forms. In the course of intra-lacustrine form divergence and genetic differentiation, the frequency of the observed transformations decreases to zero.  相似文献

The rainbow smelt, Osmerus mordax (Mitchill), is an osmerid fish that exhibits extensive life-history diversity throughout watersheds of northeastern North America. There are both ???sea-run (anadromous) and lake-resident (lacustrine) populations and the latter have diversified further into “dwarf-” and “normal-sized” life-history types. Anadromous and lacustrine smelt may inhabit the same watershed and there are several instances where dwarf and normal populations reside within the same lake. We assayed variation among smelt for morphological traits linked to feeding performance in fishes to see if trophic ecology might promote life-history diversity in Osmerus. We also examined mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA) restriction site variation among forms to assess their evolutionary interrelationships. Dwarf smelt had significantly more gill rakers, larger eyes, but shorter upper jaws than normal lake and anadromous smelt. The populations clustered into two trophic “morphotypes”; an anadromous/normal lake group of populations and a group consisting only of dwarf smelt. The mtDNAs of 444 smelt from 16 populations were digested with 12 restriction enzymes revealing 93 composite mtDNA genotypes that clustered (UPGMA) into two major phylogenetic groups differing by 0.78% in sequence. Both genetic groups were present in dwarf and normal smelt as well as in anadromous fish. Further, geographic proximity, rather than trophic morphotype, appeared to be the major determinant of genetic affinities among populations. In two lakes, however, dwarf and normal smelt populations had significantly different mtDNA genotype frequency distributions indicating that the forms are reproductively isolated within both lakes. A clustering analysis of population affinities suggested that the divergence of sympatric dwarf and normal populations had occurred independently in the two lakes. We concluded (1) that trophic ecology is an important factor promoting differentiation in smelt life histories; (2) that smelt ecotypes are polyphyletic and there have been multiple, independent divergences of Osmerus life-history types throughout northeastern North America; and (3) that the biological and mtDNA differences between coexisting dwarf and normal lake smelt argue strongly that their genetic isolation may have developed sympatrically.  相似文献

Interconnected lakes Bol’shoe Leprindo and Maloe Leprindo in Transbaikalia hosted large (extinct) and dwarf charr forms. Rarely “small” individuals intermediate in size between these forms are caught. In order to assess morphological, ecological, and genetic differentiation of sympatric charr forms and parapatric charr populations we studied their meristic and morphometric characters, feeding, breeding, and growth; we also investigated variation at 8 microsatellite loci using DNA isolated both from contemporary and historic samples. Profound differences were found between large and dwarf charr in growth rate, feeding (piscivores and highly specialized zooplanktivores, respectively), spawning time, and morphology. Dwarf charr from the two lakes demonstrate minor differences in morphology and growth rate. “Small” individuals are morphologically similar with dwarf charr and spawn together with them, they are recruited from dwarf form in late ontogeny as the result of transition to piscivorous feeding and growth acceleration. Microsatellite analysis showed that: (1) large and dwarf charr forms display high degree of genetic differentiation and reproductive isolation; (2) dwarf charr from interconnected lakes belong to different isolted populations; (3) “small charr” are genetically identical with dwarfs. The degree of ecomorphological and genetic differentiation between large and dwarf forms places charr from Leprindo Lakes among the most strongly differentiated Arctic charr forms’ flocks known at the vast range of S. alpinus complex.  相似文献

Qualitative data are presented on the diet of juvenile chum salmon Oncorhynchus keta released from the Ryazanovka experimental fish hatchery farm situated in the south of Primor’e Territory. The stomach fullness, frequency of occurrence of food items, their average weight value, and selectivity are estimated. Food spectra of chum salmon juveniles during downstream migration comprised representatives of 51 taxa of bottom freshwater invertebrates and terrestrial insects. The bulk of the diet consisted of larvae of aquatic insects—chironomids, other Diptera, and mayflies. Their diversity increased with the growth of fry. Fry of chum salmon had a wide spectrum of feeding preference, favorite food items were larvae and pupae of chironomids.  相似文献

Rattans are climbing, nonbranching palms with diverse growth forms ranging from stems that remain at the forest floor to stems that reach the canopy. We analyzed changes in architecture and biomass allocation during ontogenetic development of 13 Indonesian species in the genera Calamus, Ceratolobus, Daemonorops, Korthalsia, and Plectocomiopsis. Species included both nonclimbers (<5 m tall maximum) and climbers (10 to 50 m tall). Nonclimbers retain a rosette form—that is, thick, short internodes with length/internode diameter ratio <10 but with long petioles—throughout their lives. Leaf and internode shapes of climbers at the early stage resemble those of nonclimbers, but internodes later become longer (internode length/diameter ratio ≥10) and petioles become shorter and developed one of two kinds of climbing organs at the adult stage. These developmental changes reduce self-shading within the crown. Some climbers have dwarf blades at the early stage and skip the rosette form. Principal component analysis of biomass allocation indicated that growth strategies to attain the adult stage are diverse. These results suggest that rattans reach maturity at different phases along a series of ontogenetic development stages and generate diverse growth forms. Landlocked Arctic charr (Salvelinus alpinus) populations in sub-Arctic and Arctic Greenland lakes were sampled with multi-mesh-sized survey gillnets. The study covered a range of small shallow lakes (0.01 km2, maximum depth <3.3 m) to large deep lakes (43 km2, maximum depth >200 m). Arctic charr were found in one to three different forms in lakes with maximum depths >3 m. A dwarf form occurred in all lakes inhabited by Arctic charr and was the only form in lakes with maximum depths <8 m. In deeper lakes with maximum depths >20 m and a surface area <0.5 km2, larger charr were found, although in low numbers, the length-frequency distribution being unimodal with a tail towards large sizes. In lakes with a maximum depth >20 m, large-sized charr were more abundant, and the length-frequency distribution of the population was bimodal, with a first mode around 10–12 cm and a second mode around 26–37 cm. In a single large and deep lake, a distinct medium-sized pelagic zooplankton-eating charr form occurred. Maximum size of individual charr was significantly positively correlated with lake maximum depth and volume, and the mean size of large-sized charr was significantly positively correlated with lake volume. Our study indicates that the charr population structure became more complex with increasing lake size. Moreover, the population structure seemed to be influenced by lake-water transparency and the presence or absence of three-spined stickleback (Gasterosteus aculeatus). Some characteristics of bacterioplankton—generation time, daily (P) and specific (P/B) bacterioplankton production, and bacterial metabolic coefficientK 2—in the loess-containing Lake Khanka were determined using five modifications of the bacterial-count procedure with the fluorescent dyes fluorescamin and erythrosin. Experiments showed that the organomineral complex (OMC) in this lake is broken down by chemoorganoheterotrophic bacteria. The increase in the loess content of the lake water intensified bacterial growth and the cycles of potassium, silicon, and other biogenic elements. The addition of starch to a loess suspension activated the breakdown of OMC due to the adsorption of starch on the OMC/water interface and stimulation of the metabolism of attached bacteria.  相似文献

Reproduction of the lacustrine-riverine form of the Drjagin charr (genus Salvelinus) from Lake Lama (the Noril’sk-Pyasina aquatic system on the Taimyr Peninsula) in a mountain tributary, the Bunisyak River, as well as the formation and development of skeletal elements in embryos and larvae reared under different experimental conditions are described. Patterns of the development and the heterochrony between the rates of somatic growth and osteogenesis are an adaptation to the extremely low water temperature and oligotrophic spawning habitat of the mountain stream. Still, the formation of vertebral centrae is retarded even at rather high rearing temperatures. As compared to larvae of the small normal (nondwarf) planktivorous lacustrine form of Arctic charr from Lake Davatchan (Transbaikalia) reared at 3°C, larvae of Drjagin charr from Lake Lama reared at 1°C are characterized by accelerated growth and heterochronies of osteogenesis. The divergence of the lacustrine-riverine form of Drjagin charr from the generalized form of Salvelinus alpinus in morphology begins during the larval period of the ontogeny.  相似文献

The morphological and biological features of Bythotrephes—a relatively rare crustacean in Lake Pleshcheevo—have been identified on the basis of vast material (several hundreds of individuals) collected in August 2010. The individuals were distinguished by a minimal body size, short caudal appendix, absence of a loop, and very small caudal claws and were identified as Bythotrephes brevimanus Lilljeborg, 1901. The morphology of the crustacean corresponds to the high water mineralization in the lake and the relative stability of the environment. Some peculiarities of molt and growth of the crustacean were distinguished. A chitinous integument of the caudal appendix formed during embryogenesis has a different structure than chitin formed during further molts. In August, the population of B. brevimanus in different areas of the lake was stable and consisted only of juveniles and parthenogenetic females (80%) (4–6 eggs). The largest number of crustaceans (150 ind./m3) was recorded in the periphery of the depression above depths of 6–7 m; 80 ind./m3 were recorded above depths of 11–12 m; and, above the depression, there were less than 30 ind./m3. The small density of crustaceans in the pelagial depends on the intensive grazing of this food object selected by fish in especially transparent water (color 15–20 and transparency 300–600 cm).  相似文献
