Image segmentation is an indispensable process in the visualization of human tissues, particularly during clinical analysis of brain magnetic resonance (MR) images. For many human experts, manual segmentation is a difficult and time consuming task, which makes an automated brain MR image segmentation method desirable. In this regard, this paper presents a new segmentation method for brain MR images, integrating judiciously the merits of rough-fuzzy computing and multiresolution image analysis technique. The proposed method assumes that the major brain tissues, namely, gray matter, white matter, and cerebrospinal fluid from the MR images are considered to have different textural properties. The dyadic wavelet analysis is used to extract the scale-space feature vector for each pixel, while the rough-fuzzy clustering is used to address the uncertainty problem of brain MR image segmentation. An unsupervised feature selection method is introduced, based on maximum relevance-maximum significance criterion, to select relevant and significant textural features for segmentation problem, while the mathematical morphology based skull stripping preprocessing step is proposed to remove the non-cerebral tissues like skull. The performance of the proposed method, along with a comparison with related approaches, is demonstrated on a set of synthetic and real brain MR images using standard validity indices.

Characterization of tissues like brain by using magnetic resonance (MR) images and colorization of the gray scale image has been reported in the literature, along with the advantages and drawbacks. Here, we present two independent methods; (i) a novel colorization method to underscore the variability in brain MR images, indicative of the underlying physical density of bio tissue, (ii) a segmentation method (both hard and soft segmentation) to characterize gray brain MR images. The segmented images are then transformed into color using the above-mentioned colorization method, yielding promising results for manual tracing. Our color transformation incorporates the voxel classification by matching the luminance of voxels of the source MR image and provided color image by measuring the distance between them. The segmentation method is based on single-phase clustering for 2D and 3D image segmentation with a new auto centroid selection method, which divides the image into three distinct regions (gray matter (GM), white matter (WM), and cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) using prior anatomical knowledge). Results have been successfully validated on human T2-weighted (T2) brain MR images. The proposed method can be potentially applied to gray-scale images from other imaging modalities, in bringing out additional diagnostic tissue information contained in the colorized image processing approach as described.

Image segmentation of medical images is a challenging problem with several still not totally solved issues, such as noise interference and image artifacts. Region-based and histogram-based segmentation methods have been widely used in image segmentation. Problems arise when we use these methods, such as the selection of a suitable threshold value for the histogram-based method and the over-segmentation followed by the time-consuming merge processing in the region-based algorithm. To provide an efficient approach that not only produce better results, but also maintain low computational complexity, a new region dividing based technique is developed for image segmentation, which combines the advantages of both regions-based and histogram-based methods. The proposed method is applied to the challenging applications: Gray matter (GM), White matter (WM) and cerebro-spinal fluid (CSF) segmentation in brain MR Images. The method is evaluated on both simulated and real data, and compared with other segmentation techniques. The obtained results have demonstrated its improved performance and robustness.

The purpose of this study was to improve the accuracy of tissue segmentation on brain magnetic resonance (MR) images preprocessed by multiscale retinex (MSR), segmented with a combined boosted decision tree (BDT) and MSR algorithm (hereinafter referred to as the MSRBDT algorithm). Simulated brain MR (SBMR) T1-weighted images of different noise levels and RF inhomogeneities were adopted to evaluate the outcome of the proposed method; the MSRBDT algorithm was used to identify the gray matter (GM), white matter (WM), and cerebral-spinal fluid (CSF) in the brain tissues. The accuracy rates of GM, WM, and CSF segmentation, with spatial features (G, x, y, r, θ), were respectively greater than 0.9805, 0.9817, and 0.9871. In addition, images segmented with the MSRBDT algorithm were better than those obtained with the expectation maximization (EM) algorithm; brain tissue segmentation in MR images was significantly more precise. The proposed MSRBDT algorithm could be beneficial in clinical image segmentation.

Segmentation is an important step for the diagnosis of multiple sclerosis (MS). This paper presents a new approach to the fully automatic segmentation of MS lesions in Fluid Attenuated Inversion Recovery (FLAIR) Magnetic Resonance (MR) images. With the aim of increasing the contrast of the FLAIR MR images with respect to the MS lesions, the proposed method first estimates the fuzzy memberships of brain tissues (i.e., the cerebrospinal fluid (CSF), the normal-appearing brain tissue (NABT), and the lesion). The procedure for determining the fuzzy regions of their member functions is performed by maximizing fuzzy entropy through Genetic Algorithm. Research shows that the intersection points of the obtained membership functions are not accurate enough to segment brain tissues. Then, by extracting the structural similarity (SSIM) indices between the FLAIR MR image and its lesions membership image, a new contrast-enhanced image is created in which MS lesions have high contrast against other tissues. Finally, the new contrast-enhanced image is used to segment MS lesions. To evaluate the result of the proposed method, similarity criteria from all slices from 20 MS patients are calculated and compared with other methods, which include manual segmentation. The volume of segmented lesions is also computed and compared with Gold standard using the Intraclass Correlation Coefficient (ICC) and paired samples t test. Similarity index for the patients with small lesion load, moderate lesion load and large lesion load was 0.7261, 0.7745 and 0.8231, respectively. The average overall similarity index for all patients is 0.7649. The t test result indicates that there is no statistically significant difference between the automatic and manual segmentation. The validated results show that this approach is very promising.

Intensity inhomogeneity causes many difficulties in image segmentation and the understanding of magnetic resonance (MR) images. Bias correction is an important method for addressing the intensity inhomogeneity of MR images before quantitative analysis. In this paper, a modified model is developed for segmenting images with intensity inhomogeneity and estimating the bias field simultaneously. In the modified model, a clustering criterion energy function is defined by considering the difference between the measured image and estimated image in local region. By using this difference in local region, the modified method can obtain accurate segmentation results and an accurate estimation of the bias field. The energy function is incorporated into a level set formulation with a level set regularization term, and the energy minimization is conducted by a level set evolution process. The proposed model first appeared as a two-phase model and then extended to a multi-phase one. The experimental results demonstrate the advantages of our model in terms of accuracy and insensitivity to the location of the initial contours. In particular, our method has been applied to various synthetic and real images with desirable results.

BackgroundAccurate delineation of organs at risk (OARs) is critical in radiotherapy. Manual delineation is tedious and suffers from both interobserver and intraobserver variability. Automatic segmentation of brain MR images has a wide range of applications in brain tumor radiotherapy. In this paper, we propose a multi-atlas based adaptive active contour model for OAR automatic segmentation in brain MR images.MethodsThe proposed method consists of two parts: multi-atlas based OAR contour initiation and an adaptive edge and local region based active contour evolution. In the adaptive active contour model, we define an energy functional with an adaptive edge intensity fitting force which is responsible for evaluating contour inwards or outwards, and a local region intensity fitting force which guides the evolution of the contour.ResultsExperimental results show that the proposed method achieved more accurate segmentation results in brainstem, eyes and lens automatic segmentation with the Dice Similar Coefficient (DSC) value of 87.19%, 91.96%, 77.11% respectively. Besides, the dosimetric parameters also demonstrate the high consistency of the manual OAR delineations and the auto segmentation results of the proposed method in brain tumor radiotherapy.ConclusionsThe geometric and dosimetric evaluations show the desirable performance of the proposed method on the application of OARs segmentations in brain tumor radiotherapy.

Segmentation of brain MR images plays an important role in longitudinal investigation of developmental, aging, disease progression changes in the cerebral cortex. However, most existing brain segmentation methods consider multiple time-point images individually and thus cannot achieve longitudinal consistency. For example, cortical thickness measured from the segmented image will contain unnecessary temporal variations, which will affect the time related change pattern and eventually reduce the statistical power of analysis. In this paper, we propose a 4D segmentation framework for the adult brain MR images with the constraint of cortical thickness variations. Specifically, we utilize local intensity information to address the intensity inhomogeneity, spatial cortical thickness constraint to maintain the cortical thickness being within a reasonable range, and temporal cortical thickness variation constraint in neighboring time-points to suppress the artificial variations. The proposed method has been tested on BLSA dataset and ADNI dataset with promising results. Both qualitative and quantitative experimental results demonstrate the advantage of the proposed method, in comparison to other state-of-the-art 4D segmentation methods.

Automatic anatomical brain image segmentation is still a challenge. In particular, algorithms have to address the partial volume effect (PVE) as well as the variability of the gray level of internal brain structures which may appear closer to gray matter (GM) than white matter (WM). Atlas based segmentation is one solution as it brings prior information. For such tasks, probabilistic atlases are very useful as they take account of the PVE information. In this paper, we provide a detailed analysis of a generative statistical model based on dense deformable templates that represents several tissue types observed in medical images. The inputs are gray level data whereas our atlas is composed of both an estimation of the deformation metric and probability maps of each tissue (called class). This atlas is used to guide the tissue segmentation of new images. Experiments are shown on brain T1 MRI datasets. This method only requires approximate pre-registration, as the latter is done jointly with the segmentation. Note however that an approximate registration is a reasonable pre-requisite given the application.
