The morphological plasticity of scleractinian corals can be influenced by numerous factors in their natural environment. However, it is difficult to identify in situ the relative influence of a single biotic or abiotic factor, due to potential interactions between them. Light is considered as a major factor affecting coral skeleton morphology, due to their symbiotic relation with photosynthetic zooxanthellae. Nonetheless, most studies addressing the importance of light on coral morphological plasticity have focused on photosynthetically active radiation (PAR) intensity, with the effect of light spectra remaining largely unknown. The present study evaluated how different light spectra affect the skeleton macro- and microstructures in two coral species (Acropora formosa sensu Veron (2000) and Stylophora pistillata) maintained under controlled laboratory conditions. We tested the effect of three light treatments with the same PAR but with a distinct spectral emission: 1) T5 fluorescent lamps with blue emission; 2) Light Emitting Diodes (LED) with predominantly blue emission; and 3) Light Emitting Plasma (LEP) with full spectra emission. To exclude potential bias generated by genetic variability, the experiment was performed with clonal fragments for both species. After 6 months of experiment, it was possible to detect in coral fragments of both species exposed to different light spectra significant differences in morphometry (e.g., distance among corallites, corallite diameter, and theca thickness), as well as in the organization of their skeleton microstructure. The variability found in the skeleton macro- and microstructures of clonal organisms points to the potential pitfalls associated with the exclusive use of morphometry on coral taxonomy. Moreover, the identification of a single factor influencing the morphology of coral skeletons is relevant for coral aquaculture and can allow the optimization of reef restoration efforts.  相似文献

The flowering of Lemna perpusilla Torr. strain 6746 grown under 24-hour skeleton photoperiods consisting of 13- and 10.5-hour dark periods separated by 0.25-hr light pulses is strongly dependent on temperature. When plants are cultured in 50-ml Erlenmeyer flasks containing 20 ml of half-strength Hutner's medium supplemented with 1% (w/v) sucrose maximum, per cent, flowering occurs at 23 C. At temperatures above and below 23 C a marked decline in per cent flowering is seen.  相似文献

The incidence of diapause in the spider mite Tetranychus urticae was predicted for various photoperiodic regimes, according to the external coincidence model of photoperiodic time measurement. A phase response curve was constructed for the hypothetical photoperiodic oscillator in these mites: entrainment of this photoperiodic oscillator to a variety of ‘complete’ and ‘skeleton’ photoperiods was calculated using a transformation method for circadian rhythms. The external coincidence model proved adequate to describe experimental results with T. urticae in ‘complete’ photoperiods (T = 24 hr), symmetrical ‘skeleton’ photoperiods (T = 24 hr), asymmetrical ‘skeleton’ photoperiods (T = 24 hr) (night-interruption experiments), and ‘resonance’ experiments, in which the light component of a light/dark cycle was held constant at 8 hr and the dark component was varied over a wide range in successive experiments, providing cycles with period lengths up to 92 hr. The external coincidence model proved inadequate to explain results obtained in a ‘T-experiment’ with T. urticae comprising 1 hr pulses of light in a cycle of LD1:17.5 (T = 18.5 hr) with the first pulse of the train starting at different circadian phases. The validity and limitations of the external coincidence model as an explanation of photoperiodic time measurement in T. urticae are discussed in view of the above results.

The CO2 output of Lemna perpusilla 6746 in “skeleton photoperiods” consisting of alternating 10½-hour and 13-hour dark periods separated by ¼-hour illuminations was recorded under stable high and low nitrate conditions. The phase relationship finally attained between light schedule and output is the same regardless of which dark period is given first, but entrainment is more rapid (as is flowering) with an initial 13-hour dark period. In all respects other than bistability—the assumption of two different stable phase relationships depending on the initial dark period—both flowering and the course of CO2 output conform to Pittendrigh's model derived from Drosophila eclosion rhythms, confirming the view that an endogenous circadian rhythm, or biological clock, underlies the photoperiodic control of flowering in this plant. Experiments with rigorous temperature control show that earlier results with long light exposures were in part due to temperature changes; in consequence, it is clear that entrainment patterns with high nitrate differ even more from those in low nitrate than was previously evident, and not simply by the addition of a “nitrate peak.” Other Lemnaceae tested with a few simple light-dark schedules in both types of media show a variety of responses, with no obvious correlation to photoperiodic response type.  相似文献

The relationships between sponges and macroalgae have been poorly investigated, especially in temperate waters. This work describes the consortium between the dictyoceratid sponge Dysidea pallescens and the red alga Acrochaetium spongicola permeating spongin fibres in the Mediterranean Sea; moreover, this is the first report of a diatom, Amphora pediculus, living also inside the spongin skeleton. The annual trend of the total algal biomass did not vary over time in relation to the temperature, irradiance and incorporation of foreign bodies. Our analyses, conducted by light and electron microscopy, suggest that both the macroalga and the diatom invade the skeleton of the sponge from the external environment, and that the benthic diatom, epiphyte of the macroalga, is passively carried inside the fibres through the growth of Acrochaetium spongicola. All the examined samples of D. pallescens showed that the macroalga permeated at least some fibres, while the presence of the diatom was occasional. The superficial layer of the sponge, thin and reticulate, likely allows the passage of the light and ensures the algal survival inside the sponge tissue. The high occurrence of the association with A. spongicola, together with the morphological adaptations of the sponge favouring the algal life, suggest that the relationship is mutualistic. The possible benefits for the involved partners are hypothesized. The taxonomy and ecology of endozoic Acrochaetiales are controversial due to the reduced size of thalli, the absence of peculiar diagnostic characters and unknown reproductive structures. Therefore, detailed studies on the relationships between the algae and their hosts will provide helpful information for the algal identification.  相似文献

A skeleton photoperiod consists of two short pulses which are applied on the circadian oscillator at times corresponding to the beginning and to the end of a continuous light stimulus. To study several problems in entrainment of circadian rhythms by skeleton photoperiods, we develop a simple diagrammatic solution of the steady state entrainment making use of phase transition curves which are directly gotten from phase response curves. The graphical method is simple and systematic to study entrainment by light cycles with various day lengths. As the method is also intuitive, we can easily examine three problems. (1) In Drosophila the phase relation (ψ) between rhythm and light cycle is a continuous function of day length of skeleton photoperiods up to about 12 h, but a marked discontinuity (ψ-jump) sets in between 13 and 14h. By the diagrammatic method we find that ψ-jump is mathematically a bifurcation phenomenon. (2) The action of photoperiods up to about 12 h is fully simulated by two 15-min skeleton pulses. Do 3-min skeleton pulses imitate the complete photoperiods? We find that pulse width is arbitrary to some extent. (3) Why skeleton photoperiods up to about 12 h are good models of complete photoperiods? The reason is the small amplitude and the nearly symmetrical form of phase response curves in the subjective day.  相似文献

The control of night-break timing was studied in dark-grown seedlings of Pharbitis nil (Choisy cv. Violet) following a single continuous or skeleton photoperiod. There was a rhythmic response to a red (R) interruption of an inductive dark period, and the phasing of the rhythm was influenced by the preceding light treatment.

Following a continuous white light photoperiod of 6 hours or less, the points of maximum inhibition of flowering were constant in real time. Following a continuous photoperiod of more than 6 hours, maximum inhibition occurred at 9 and 32.5 hours after the end of the light period. The amplitude of the rhythm during the second circadian cycle was much reduced following prolonged photoperiods.

Following a skeleton photoperiod, the time of maximum sensitivity to a R interruption was always related to the second pulse of the skeleton, R2, with the first point of maximum inhibition of flowering occurring after 12 to 18 hours and the second after 39 hours. Without a second R pulse, the time of maximum sensitivity to a R interruption was related to the initial R1 pulse. A `light-off' or dusk signal was not mimicked by a R pulse ending a skeleton photoperiod; such a pulse only generated a `light-on' signal and initiated a new rhythm.

It is concluded that the timing of sensitivity to a R interruption of an inductive dark period in Pharbitis nil is controlled by a single circadian rhythm initiated by a light-on signal. After 6 hours in continuous white light, the phase of this rhythm is determined by the transition to darkness. Following an extended photoperiod, the timing characteristics were those of an hourglass; this seemed to be due to an effect on the coupling or expression of a single circadian timer during the second and subsequent cycles, rather than to the operation of a different timing mechanism.

In addition to the effects on timing, the photoperiod affected the magnitude of the flowering response.

The present study showed that the eggs of the desert locust, Schistocerca gregaria, and the migratory locust, Locusta migratoria, responded to photoperiod by hatching when placed on sand in the laboratory. S. gregaria mainly hatched during the dark phase and L. migratoria during the light phase. The importance of light as a hatching cue depended on the magnitude of the temperature change during the thermoperiod; photoperiod played a more important role in the control of hatching time in both species when the magnitude of the temperature change was small. In addition, the eggs of the two species that were covered with sand did not respond to photoperiod and hatched during both the light and dark phases, indicating that light did not penetrate through the sand. Because locust eggs are normally laid as egg pods and a foam plug is deposited between the egg mass and the ground surface, we tested a possibility that naturally deposited eggs perceived light through the foam plug. The eggs that were deposited and left undisturbed in the sand hatched during the light and dark phases at similar frequencies. These results suggest that the eggs of both locust species responded to light and controlled their hatching timing accordingly but would not use light as a hatching cue in the field. The evolutionary significance of the ability of eggs to respond to light in these locusts was discussed.  相似文献

Sensory photoreceptors enable organisms to adjust their physiology, behavior, and development in response to light, generally with spatiotemporal acuity and reversibility. These traits underlie the use of photoreceptors as genetically encoded actuators to alter by light the state and properties of heterologous organisms. Subsumed as optogenetics, pertinent approaches enable regulating diverse cellular processes, not least gene expression. Here, we controlled the widely used Tet repressor by coupling to light-oxygen-voltage (LOV) modules that either homodimerize or dissociate under blue light. Repression could thus be elevated or relieved, and consequently protein expression was modulated by light. Strikingly, the homodimeric RsLOV module from Rhodobacter sphaeroides not only dissociated under light but intrinsically reacted to temperature. The limited light responses of wild-type RsLOV at 37 °C were enhanced in two variants that exhibited closely similar photochemistry and structure. One variant improved the weak homodimerization affinity of 40 µM by two-fold and thus also bestowed light sensitivity on a receptor tyrosine kinase. Certain photoreceptors, exemplified by RsLOV, can evidently moonlight as temperature sensors which immediately bears on their application in optogenetics and biotechnology. Properly accounted for, the temperature sensitivity can be leveraged for the construction of signal-responsive cellular circuits.  相似文献

The global changes in protein expression of Synechocystis sp. PCC6803, a photosynthetic bacterium for the production of secondary metabolites as a green cell factory, were investigated by proteome separation and a subsequent tandem mass spectrometry. Two different proteome separation techniques, strong cation exchange chromatography and off-gel electrophoresis, were applied. The combination of the two proteome separation techniques enabled the comparative analysis of the differential regulation of the Synechocystis proteome in response to two different environmental factors, temperature and light. A total of 1,483 proteins were identified, which represent over 40% of the genes in Synechocystis. Our data showed that fatty acid metabolism was inhibited by (3R)-hydroxymyristol acyl carrier protein dehydrase (Sll1605) under low temperature conditions. The expression of UDP-N-acetylglucosamine acyltransferase (Sll0379) and 3-O-[3-hydroxymyristoyl] glucosamine N-acyltransferase (Slr0776), which is involved in lipopolysaccharide metabolism, was not observed under high light conditions. Under high light exposure, proteins related to iron-sulfur metabolism were detected, which may be responsible for maintaining the redox potential of the photosystem. High light under low temperature caused severe damage to the photosystem. Some of the responses to these stresses were similar to those previously reported for other photosynthetic organisms. Notably, this study revealed the followings: (i) low temperature inhibits fatty acid synthesis; (ii) high light inhibits lipopolysaccharides synthesis and stimulates the expression of iron-sulfur related proteins; and (iii) high light under low temperature induces the photorespiratory cycle. The global proteomic analysis clearly showed that stress conditions such as low temperature and/or high light induce cellular metabolisms related with the protection of their photosystems in the model microalga Synechocystis sp. PCC6803.  相似文献

Background

The best European locality for complete Eocene mammal skeletons is Grube Messel, near Darmstadt, Germany. Although the site was surrounded by a para-tropical rain forest in the Eocene, primates are remarkably rare there, and only eight fragmentary specimens were known until now. Messel has now yielded a full primate skeleton. The specimen has an unusual history: it was privately collected and sold in two parts, with only the lesser part previously known. The second part, which has just come to light, shows the skeleton to be the most complete primate known in the fossil record.

Methodology/Principal Findings

We describe the morphology and investigate the paleobiology of the skeleton. The specimen is described as Darwinius masillae n.gen. n.sp. belonging to the Cercamoniinae. Because the skeleton is lightly crushed and bones cannot be handled individually, imaging studies are of particular importance. Skull radiography shows a host of teeth developing within the juvenile face. Investigation of growth and proportion suggest that the individual was a weaned and independent-feeding female that died in her first year of life, and might have attained a body weight of 650–900 g had she lived to adulthood. She was an agile, nail-bearing, generalized arboreal quadruped living above the floor of the Messel rain forest.

Conclusions/Significance

Darwinius masillae represents the most complete fossil primate ever found, including both skeleton, soft body outline and contents of the digestive tract. Study of all these features allows a fairly complete reconstruction of life history, locomotion, and diet. Any future study of Eocene-Oligocene primates should benefit from information preserved in the Darwinius holotype. Of particular importance to phylogenetic studies, the absence of a toilet claw and a toothcomb demonstrates that Darwinius masillae is not simply a fossil lemur, but part of a larger group of primates, Adapoidea, representative of the early haplorhine diversification.  相似文献

Many Caribbean coral reefs are undergoing a phase shift from coral to macroalgal dominance. Understanding the processes driving changes in algal abundance and community structure requires clarification of the relative effects of top-down (e.g., herbivory) and bottom-up processes (e.g., light, temperature, and nutrients). To date, a number of studies have examined the relative effects of grazing versus nutrification but interactions between herbivory and natural, seasonal fluctuations in temperature and light have not been investigated. This study considered the dynamics of three Caribbean macroalgal species [Lobophora variegata (Lamouroux), Dictyota pulchella (H?rnig and Schnetter), and Halimeda opuntia (Linnaeus)] and algal turf. A field experiment was established to measure species-specific algal dynamics (changes in abundance) over 13?months in the presence and absence of herbivory. Both herbivory and seasonal changes were important processes controlling macroalgal and turf abundance. Water temperature and light had a key role on D. pulchella; this species?? abundance significantly increased in the summer, when water temperature and light were the highest, and decreased during winter. Surprisingly, herbivory did not seem to control D. pulchella directly. However, herbivory was the most important process controlling the abundance of L. variegata, H. opuntia, and turf. The abundance of both algal species was correlated with seasonal changes in the environment, but was depleted outside cages throughout the year. The abundance of H. opuntia was positively correlated with temperature and light, but there was no statistical interaction between drivers. The statistical interaction between temperature and light was significant for the abundance of L. variegata and turf, but algal abundance declined as both factors increased. Overall, macroalgal and turf cover were mainly controlled by herbivory, while community structure (which species contributed to the overall cover) was largely influenced by seasonal changes in temperature and light.  相似文献

The study of plant responses to environmental stress factors is essential for management of plant systems and for anticipating their response to climate change. The main goal of this study was to determine morphological and physiological responses of Nothofagus obliqua and N. nervosa seedlings to light and temperature, two of the main stress factors acting in their current natural distribution in NW Patagonia. Responses to light were evaluated analyzing growth and survival, as well as morphological and physiological traits related to them, in seedlings subjected to three contrasting light conditions (full-sun conditions, 50% of sunlight and 20% of sunlight) during one growth season. Temperature photosynthetic responses were evaluated in seedlings subjected to temperature treatments between ?5 and 40°C for 2 and 4 h. Growth rate and biomass partition were similar between light treatments in both species. High apical meristem damage and decreased photosynthetic capacity of preformed leaves were observed under full-sun conditions, suggesting that high light levels have a deleterious effect on plant yield. Both species produced neoformed leaves during the growing season with better photosynthetic capacity than preformed leaves under full sun conditions, contributing to plant acclimation. Almost no plasticity was observed in morphological traits in response to shade. Both species differed in optimum temperature for photosynthesis, with a wider temperature range at which high photosynthesis is maintained in N. obliqua. In both species the higher values of net photosynthetic rate were found at higher temperatures than the mean annual temperature of its current natural distribution range. Under no water-stress conditions, future higher temperatures could increase carbon fixation of these species, with a little advantage of N. obliqua if temperature variance is high. Synergy effect of various environmental stress factors, particularly considering cultivation of these species outside their current natural distribution sites require further studies.  相似文献

The influence of light on asexual fruiting and mycelial growth of Phycomyces blakesleeanus Burgeff was studied by means of fruiting body counts and size measurements in cultures on solid media under varied incubation conditions. Five types of photoresponses were shown by ATCC Strain 8743a: (a) photoinduction of giant sporangiophores; (b) interference by light with an endogenous system that otherwise induces fruiting when the mycelium approaches the rim of the Petri dish; (c) inhibition of mycelial growth rates by light; (d) inhibition of dwarf sporangiophore induction by light; and (e) postponement by light of death in clones maintained by serial transfer at low temperature. A second strain, designated G5, showed responses comparable to (a), (b), and (d). The magnitudes of the responses were greatly affected by temperature of incubation and available nitrogen (asparagine) supply. The photoinduction of giant sporangiophores could be demonstrated with light of wavelengths between 380 and 480 nanometers but not with 520 nanometers or above. At 480 nanometers, light doses as small as 40 ergs per square centimeter were effective in inducing giant sporangiophores in strain 8743a.  相似文献

A matrix of photobioreactors integrated with metabolic sensors was used to examine the combined impact of light and temperature variations on the growth and physiology of the biofuel candidate microalgal species Nannochloropsis oculata. The experiments were performed with algal cultures maintained at a constant 20°C versus a 15°C to 25°C diel temperature cycle, where light intensity also followed a diel cycle with a maximum irradiance of 1920 µmol photons m−2 s−1. No differences in algal growth (Chlorophyll a) were found between the two environmental regimes; however, the metabolic processes responded differently throughout the day to the change in environmental conditions. The variable temperature treatment resulted in greater damage to photosystem II due to the combined effect of strong light and high temperature. Cellular functions responded differently to conditions before midday as opposed to the afternoon, leading to strong hysteresis in dissolved oxygen concentration, quantum yield of photosystem II and net photosynthesis. Overnight metabolism performed differently, probably as a result of the temperature impact on respiration. Our photobioreactor matrix has produced novel insights into the physiological response of Nannochloropsis oculata to simulated environmental conditions. This information can be used to predict the effectiveness of deploying Nannochloropsis oculata in similar field conditions for commercial biofuel production.  相似文献

Light intensity and day temperature were identified as principal modifying factors of monoterpenoid composition and yield in individuals of Satureja douglasii. The individuals represent compositional type and clinial patterns of infraspecific compositional variation. The lack of compositional interconversion confirms the tight genetic control of biosynthesis which results in these infraspecific patterns. There was marked influence by light intensity on monoterpenoid yield per leaf dry weight and by day temperature on yield per leaf. Low light intensity reduced leaf dry weight but had little effect on the amount of monoterpenoids per leaf whereas low day temperature increased both leaf weight and yield per leaf, compared to high light and day temperature effects. Day temperature modification of yield per leaf was related to modification of composition.  相似文献

The photosynthetic response was investigated on Chrysanthemum morifolium under dynamic light conditions in the 20–35 °C temperature range to evaluate the effect of climatic variables on photosynthetic induction. The plant material was grown under uniform, controlled conditions and its gas exchange was analyzed. The gas exchange measurements were used to investigate the rate of induction, momentary induction state, and the opening of stomata. At the varying temperature ranges and under dynamic light conditions, C. morifolium reached a quasi-steady-state induction equilibrium (ISeq(PAR,T)) within 14–45 min. For the same level of photosynthetically active radiation (PAR), the equilibrated level of steady-state induction increased as the temperature increased. It was highest approximately at 30 °C. The induction state was equilibrated at a lower level as the temperature increased to 35 °C. The interaction effect of PAR and temperature on induction state was not significant. The rate of photosynthetic induction and the time required at which the induction reached its 90 % value (t 90) was influenced by PAR significantly. The light history of a leaf had a significant effect on t 90, indicating that the time to reach a steady-state induction is different depending on the light environment and the period at which the leaf was exposed to light. The velocity of the photosynthetic induction was not affected by the temperature. It was associated with stomatal conductance of the leaf prior to the onset of light (g Sini).  相似文献

Planktonic Oscillatoria spp. often inhabit depths of thermally stratified lakes in which gradients of physical and chemical factors occur. Measurements of photosynthetic rate or photosynthetic carbon metabolism were used to evaluate the importance of vertical gradients of temperature, oxygen, and pH upon Oscillatoria rubescens in Crooked Lake, Ind. At the low light intensities experienced in situ, neither photosynthetic rate nor relative incorporation of carbon dioxide into low-molecular-weight compounds, polysaccharide, or protein was affected by temperature. At a 10-fold-higher light intensity, the photosynthetic rate increased as temperature increased; most of the additional carbon accumulated as polysaccharide. Polysaccharide which was synthesized at high light intensity and temperature was respired when the organisms were placed in the dark, but was not used for protein biosynthesis. When O. rubescens was shifted from high light to low light, a fraction of the polysaccharide was metabolized into protein. Adaptation to growth at lower temperatures by O. rubescens cultures resulted in a decrease in the maximum photosynthetic rate. Oxygen inhibited photosynthesis by only 10 to 15% at concentrations typically found in the lake. The photosynthetic rates at pH values which occurred in Crooked Lake were all near the maximum. Thus, gradients of temperature, oxygen, or pH are not likely to significantly affect the distribution of O. rubescens in Crooked Lake, given the low light intensity at which O. rubescens grows and the range of values for those factors in the lake.  相似文献

Based on our hypothesis that the 3,3-diphenylpentane (DPP) skeleton is useful as a multi-template for creation of various biologically active compounds and acts as a steroid skeleton substitute, we designed and synthesized novel HMG-CoA reductase inhibitors with a DPP skeleton. Among them, sodium (E,3R,5S)-7-(2-(4-fluorophenyl)-4-(3-phenylpentan-3-yl)phenyl)-3,5-dihydroxy-hept-6-enoate showed potent HMG-CoA reductase-inhibitory activity comparable with that of clinically useful mevastatin.  相似文献
