ABSTRACT

In this essay I posit race as a kind of technology, one that creates parallel universes and premature death, requiring routine maintenance and upgrade. I suggest that David Theo Goldberg’s Are We Postracial Yet? is a story of innovation that expertly exposes the trade secrets of the social production of race. I argue that not only are technological and social innovation metaphorically linked; technoscience is also one of the most effective conduits for reproducing racial inequality, and so I extend Goldberg’s analysis to address the central role of science and technology in modern statecraft and racecraft. Finally, if postracial innovators are busily refurbishing racism to remake inequality, then those who seek radical transformation in the other direction, towards freedom and justice, must re-examine the default settings, rather than the routine breakdowns, of social life.  相似文献

Abstract

I seek to understand two dimensions in the evolution and practices of medical institutions in the USA. First, I ask, how and why do medical organizations limit, suspend, or redirect profit-oriented functions to abide by principles of altruism and still survive in a competitive market economy? Reaching out to poor and immigrant populations entails non-economic factors, including the deployment of religious and humanitarian narratives. Conversely, the extent and character of legislative actions supporting philanthropic endeavours is closely related to mobilization at the grassroots level. I investigate the ways in which community organizations bring about changes to support practices that confound, at least to some extent, market expectations and underscore the significance of political action to secure health care services on behalf of low-income populations, including immigrants.  相似文献

Moment closure approximations are used to provide analytic approximations to non-linear stochastic population models. They often provide insights into model behaviour and help validate simulation results. However, existing closure schemes typically fail in situations where the population distribution is highly skewed or extinctions occur. In this study we address these problems by introducing novel second-and third-order moment closure approximations which we apply to the stochastic SI and SIS epidemic models. In the case of the SI model, which has a highly skewed distribution of infection, we develop a second-order approximation based on the beta-binomial distribution. In addition, a closure approximation based on mixture distribution is developed in order to capture the behaviour of the stochastic SIS model around the threshold between persistence and extinction. This mixture approximation comprises a probability distribution designed to capture the quasi-equilibrium probabilities of the system and a probability mass at 0 which represents the probability of extinction. Two third-order versions of this mixture approximation are considered in which the log-normal and the beta-binomial are used to model the quasi-equilibrium distribution. Comparison with simulation results shows: (1) the beta-binomial approximation is flexible in shape and matches the skewness predicted by simulation as shown by the stochastic SI model and (2) mixture approximations are able to predict transient and extinction behaviour as shown by the stochastic SIS model, in marked contrast with existing approaches. We also apply our mixture approximation to approximate a likehood function and carry out point and interval parameter estimation.  相似文献

Abstract

Aim of the study: To investigate a more available model for the early phase of motor learning after action observation combined with motor imagery training in elderly people. To address the purpose, we focused on a slow, unskilled model demonstrating an occasional error.

Materials and methods: A total of 36 elderly people participated in the current study and were assigned to either the unskilled or skilled model observation groups (n?=?12, respectively), or the control group (n?=?12). The participants in the observation groups observed the assigned a video clip of an unskilled or skilled model demonstrating a ball rotation task. During the observation, the participants were instructed to imagine themselves as the person in the video clip. The participants in the control group read a scientific paper during the equivalent period of action observation and motor imagery. We measured ball rotation performance (the time required for five rotations, the number of ball drops) in pre- and post-intervention (observation combined with motor imagery training for intervention groups or reading for control group).

Results: Ball rotation performance (ball rotation speed) significantly improved in the unskilled model observation group compared to the other two groups.

Conclusions: Intervention for action observation using unskilled model combined with motor imagery was effective for improving motor performance during the early phase of motor learning.  相似文献

Abstract

One challenge for hepatic flow simulation is to divide the hepatic vasculature into individual Couinaud segments, and to simulate flow at both segmental and organ levels. We propose to integrate a segment simulation algorithm with the flow solver in a Constructive Constraint Optimisation (CCO) algorithm to address this problem. In this way blood flow simulations can be conducted for large segment-specific vasculatures as relevant to surgical procedures. ObjectiveTo focus on the intersection of perception, diagnosis, stigma, and weight bias in the management of obesity and obtain consensus on actionable steps to improve care provided for persons with obesity.MethodsThe American Association of Clinical Endocrinology (AACE) convened a consensus conference of interdisciplinary health care professionals to discuss the interplay between the diagnosis of obesity using adiposity-based chronic disease (ABCD) nomenclature and staging, weight stigma, and internalized weight bias (IWB) with development of actionable guidance to aid clinicians in mitigating IWB and stigma in that context.ResultsThe following affirmed and emergent concepts were proposed: (1) obesity is ABCD, and these terms can be used in differing ways to communicate; (2) classification categories of obesity should have improved nomenclature across the spectrum of body mass index (BMI) using ethnic-specific BMI ranges and waist circumference (WC); (3) staging the clinical severity of obesity based on the presence and severity of ABCD complications may reduce weight-centric contribution to weight stigma and IWB; (4) weight stigma and internalized bias are both drivers and complications of ABCD and can impair quality of life, predispose to psychological disorders, and compromise the effectiveness of therapeutic interventions; (5) the presence and of stigmatization and IWB should be assessed in all patients and be incorporated into the staging of ABCD severity; and (6) optimal care will necessitate increased awareness and the development of educational and interventional tools for health care professionals that address IWB and stigma.ConclusionsThe consensus panel has proposed an approach for integrating bias and stigmatization, psychological health, and social determinants of health in a staging system for ABCD severity as an aid to patient management. To effectively address stigma and IWB within a chronic care model for patients with obesity, there is a need for health care systems that are prepared to provide evidence-based, person-centered treatments; patients who understand that obesity is a chronic disease and are empowered to seek care and participate in behavioral therapy; and societies that promote policies and infrastructure for bias-free compassionate care, access to evidence-based interventions, and disease prevention.  相似文献

Background

Entity normalization is an important information extraction task which has gained renewed attention in the last decade, particularly in the biomedical and life science domains. In these domains, and more generally in all specialized domains, this task is still challenging for the latest machine learning-based approaches, which have difficulty handling highly multi-class and few-shot learning problems. To address this issue, we propose C-Norm, a new neural approach which synergistically combines standard and weak supervision, ontological knowledge integration and distributional semantics.

Results

Our approach greatly outperforms all methods evaluated on the Bacteria Biotope datasets of BioNLP Open Shared Tasks 2019, without integrating any manually-designed domain-specific rules.

Conclusions

Our results show that relatively shallow neural network methods can perform well in domains that present highly multi-class and few-shot learning problems.

BackgroundSoil-transmitted helminth (STH) infections affect more than two out of every five schoolchildren in the poorest regions of rural China, an alarmingly high prevalence rate given the low cost and wide availability of safe and effective deworming treatment. Understanding of local knowledge, attitudes, and practices regarding STH infection in rural China has until now, been sparse, although such information is critical for prevention and control initiatives.Conclusions/SignificanceThe findings from this study reveal reasons for why deworming treatment is not sought, and inform specific recommendations for a deworming intervention that can more effectively address underlying barriers to deworming in areas of persistently high STH infection rates. The main barrier to seeking STH treatment is not availability or cost of the drugs, but rather the lack of impetus to seek the drugs. A comprehensive nationwide deworming program in China should involve annual provision of free deworming treatment in village clinics or schools, distribution of culturally appropriate educational materials to inform children and families about STH infection, and improvement of the quality of health care delivered by village clinicians.  相似文献

ObjectiveWe aim to simulate the uterine electrical activity at the myometrium level and at the skin level where it can be recorded non-invasively.Material and methodsWe use 2D models both at the myometrium scale and for the volume conductor. The multi-scale model has been implemented in Python, as a complete package including the needed tools. To speedup the slowest step, we integrated parallel execution.ResultsWe obtain realistic simulations of EHG signals as recorded by an electrode array placed on the woman abdomen.ConclusionThese simulations are still generic, the next problem to address will be the identification of the model's parameters to obtain patient-specific simulations.  相似文献

Purpose

In contrast to water consumption, water pollution has gained less attention in water footprinting so far. Unlike water scarcity impact assessment, on which a consensus has recently been achieved, there is no agreement on how to address water quality deterioration in water footprinting. This paper provides an overview of existing water footprint methods to calculate impacts associated with water pollution and discusses their strengths and limitations using an illustrative example.

Methods

The methods are described and applied to a case study for the wastewater generated in textile processing. The results for two scenarios with different water quality parameters are evaluated against each other and the water scarcity footprint (WSF). Finally, methodological aspects, strengths and limitations of each method are analysed and discussed and recommendations for the methods application are provided.

Results and discussion

Two general impact assessment approaches exist to address water quality in water footprinting: the Water Degradation Footprint (WDF) calculates the impacts associated with the propagation of released pollutants in the environment and their uptake by the population and ecosystem, while the Water Availability Footprint (WAF) quantifies the impacts related to the water deprivation, when polluted water cannot be used. Overall, seven methods to consider water quality in water footprinting were identified, which rely upon one or a combination of WDF, WAF and WSF. Methodological scopes significantly vary regarding the inventory requirements and provided results (a single-score or several impact categories). The case study demonstrated that the methods provide conflicting results concerning which scenario is less harmful with regard to the water pollution.

Conclusions

This paper provides a review of the water pollution assessment methods in water footprinting and analyses their modelling choices and resulting effects on the WF. With regard to the identified inconsistencies, we reveal the urgent need for a guidance for the methods application to provide robust results and allow a consistent evaluation of the water quality in water footprinting.

Background  

In microarray studies researchers are often interested in the comparison of relevant quantities between two or more similar experiments, involving different treatments, tissues, or species. Typically each experiment reports measures of significance (e.g. p-values) or other measures that rank its features (e.g genes). Our objective is to find a list of features that are significant in all experiments, to be further investigated. In this paper we present an R package called sdef, that allows the user to quantify the evidence of communality between the experiments using previously proposed statistical methods based on the ranked lists of p-values. sdef implements two approaches that address this objective: the first is a permutation test of the maximal ratio of observed to expected common features under the hypothesis of independence between the experiments. The second approach, set in a Bayesian framework, is more flexible as it takes into account the uncertainty on the number of genes differentially expressed in each experiment.  相似文献

The limited understanding on why Latino parents endorse organized activities is problematic given that these beliefs can help elucidate why they overcome barriers to support their children’s participation. In this study, we analyzed interviews from a diverse group of 34 Mexican-origin parents who resided in Arizona. Results of the study indicate that although organized activities were perceived as contexts that can help youth gain skills reflecting mainstream American values (e.g., school engagement, interpersonal skills), parents also thought that activities promoted positive behaviors associated with their ethnic culture based on traditional values related to respeto, familism, and religiosity. The implications of this study suggest that understanding Mexican-origin parents’ perspectives can help organized activity leaders design programs that fully address the benefits that families seek from organized activities.  相似文献

The heat shock protein 90 (Hsp90) represents a new avenue for cancer therapy. A novel benzolactam inhibitor, compound 31, showed a great selectivity for Hsp90α and Hsp90β against Grp94. However, the structural basis for the great selectivity of compound 31 for Hsp90α/β versus Grp94 remains poorly understood. In this study, we carried out molecular docking, molecular dynamics simulations and binding free energy calculations (MM-GBSA) to address the isoform selective property. Molecular docking studies indicated the different binding modes of the Hsp90 and Grp94 with compound 31. The MM-GBSA calculations revealed that the hydrophobic interactions between compound 31 and proteins contributed the most to the binding affinity and the Grp94/compound 31 complex could result in a less energy-favourable complex compared with the Hsp90α/compound 31 and the Hsp90β/compound 31 complexes. This may render the weak binding of compound 31 to the Grp94. This study may be helpful for the future design of novel and selective Hsp90 inhibitors.  相似文献

ABSTRACT

Introduction: Being important representatives of various proteomes, membrane-active cationic peptides (CPs) are attractive objects as lead compounds in the design of new antibacterial, anticancer, antifungal, and antiviral molecules. Numerous CPs are found in insect and snake venoms, where many of them reveal cytolytic properties. Due to advances in omics technologies, the number of such peptides is growing dramatically.

Areas covered: To understand structure–function relationships for CPs in a living cell, detailed analysis of their hydrophobic/hydrophilic properties is indispensable. We consider two structural classes of membrane-active CPs: latarcins (Ltc) from spider and cardiotoxins (CTXs) from snake venoms. While the former are void off disulfide bonds and conformationally flexible, the latter are structurally rigid and cross-linked with disulfide bonds. In order to elucidate structure–activity relationships behind their antibacterial, anticancer, and hemolytic effects, the properties of these polypeptides are considered on a side-by-side basis.

Expert commentary: An ever-increasing number of venom-derived membrane-active polypeptides require new methods for identification of their functional propensities and sequence-based design of novel pharmacological substances. We address these issues considering a number of the designed peptides, based either on Ltc or CTX sequences. Experimental and computer modeling techniques required for these purposes are delineated.  相似文献

Introduction: Psychiatric disorders are severe, debilitating and heterogeneous diseases with a high impact on public health. In this review we address state of the art clinical approaches to diagnose psychiatric disorders and underline the necessity to found new tools to help clinicians.

Areas covered: We provide an update on proteomic studies and suggest potential biomarkers focusing on schizophrenia (SCZ), bipolar disorder (BD), and major depression (MD). In particular, we direct our attention to proteomic results obtained from studies on biological fluids. We also show an interaction analysis of differentially expressed proteins found in SCZ, BD and MD.

Expert commentary: To date, there is a need to find molecular biomarkers for psychiatric disorders. The use of a proteomic approach allows protein fingerprints to be defined in normal and pathological states. We believe that saliva is an intriguing biological fluid, whose proteomic study in psychiatric disorders is still in its early stages.  相似文献

In this study, we report the synthesis and biological evaluation of four 6- and 17-substituted progesterone derivatives (7–10). These compounds were prepared from the commercially available 17α-acetoxyprogesterone. The biological effect of these steroids was demonstrated in in vivo as well as in vitro experiments. In the in vivo experiments, we measured the activity of 6–10 on the weight of the prostate glands of gonadectomized hamsters treated with testosterone (T). For the studies in vitro, we determined the IC50 value by measuring the concentration of steroidal derivative that inhibited 50% of the activity of 5α-reductase present in the human prostate. The results from this work indicated that compounds 6–9 significantly decreased the weight of the prostate as compared to testosterone-treated animals and this reduction of prostate weight was comparable to that produced by finasteride. Steroid 8 was the most effective of the tested compounds. However, compound 10 did not exhibit this capacity. On the other hand, 6–9 exhibited a high inhibitory activity for the human 5α-reductase enzyme with IC50 values of 10, 70, 22, and 19?nM, respectively. However, 10 was not effective for the inhibition of 5α-reductase activity. In conclusion, the compounds that contained the acetate ester moiety in the molecule (6, 7, 8, and 9) inhibited the activity of 5α-reductase and decreased the weight of the prostate. Nevertheless, the double bond in ring B seems to diminish the inhibitory potency (7 and 9), since 6, which does not possess a double bond at C-6, had the highest inhibitory activity (the lowest IC50 value).  相似文献

Background

One of the major challenges in microbial studies is detecting associations between microbial communities and a specific disease. A specialized feature of microbiome count data is that intestinal bacterial communities form clusters called as “enterotype”, which are characterized by differences in specific bacterial taxa, making it difficult to analyze these data under health and disease conditions. Traditional probabilistic modeling cannot distinguish between the bacterial differences derived from enterotype and those related to a specific disease.

Results

We propose a new probabilistic model, named as ENIGMA (Enterotype-like uNIGram mixture model for Microbial Association analysis), which can be used to address these problems. ENIGMA enabled simultaneous estimation of enterotype-like clusters characterized by the abundances of signature bacterial genera and the parameters of environmental effects associated with the disease.

Conclusion

In the simulation study, we evaluated the accuracy of parameter estimation. Furthermore, by analyzing the real-world data, we detected the bacteria related to Parkinson’s disease. ENIGMA is implemented in R and is available from GitHub (https://github.com/abikoushi/enigma).

Abstract

The International Convention on Liability and Compensation for Damage in Connection with the Carriage of Hazardous and Noxious Substances by Sea (the HNS Convention) has not entered into force. In China, a two-tier compensation regime has been established for vessel-source oil pollution damage, but this regime does not address damage in connection with the carriage of HNS by sea. This article examines the Chinese law approach to civil liability and compensation for damage in this respect, and discusses whether there is an adequate framework in place to address issues that may arise.  相似文献

Abstract

Mating patterns do not alter allelic frequencies in natural populations. Therefore, if evolution is defined as changes in allelic frequencies in a population through time, then mating system is not an evolutionary force. There is no direct causal link between mating patterns and the familiar measures of genetic variability applied to allele frequency data from haploid gametophyte populations. In this paper we focus on how mating patterns may affect intralocus variability when acting together with evolutionary forces, like selection and drift. Moreover, we address how levels of inbreeding can have a profound influence on haplotypic variation. Measures for estimating the extent of recombination from haplotypic variation are presented. It seems that high levels of selfing are not necessarily associated with bisexuality in bryophytes.  相似文献
