The effect of solar UVB radiation on the growth and speciescomposition of phytoplankton from a high-mountain lake (2417m a.s.l.) was studied in situ for 16 days in two enclosuresof 1 m receiving either full sunlight or sunlight without UVB.A total of 20 species were identified in both enclosures, consistingmainly of dinoflagellates, chrysophytes and diatoms. Duringthe experiment, there were no significant differences in phytoplanktonspecies composition between the two enclos ures. In both treatments, the abundance of phytoplankton increased continuously, and chlorophylla changed by -5-fold. We observed high fluctuations in the abundanceof several species. However, these fluctuations occurred inboth enclosures, and hence they were not related to UVB radiation. Some species were affected by daily fluctuations of radiation(UVA + photosynthetically active radi ation). Cyclotella aff.gordonensis showed a robust positive correlation, whereas speciesof Gymno dinium were negatively correlated. For most species, the sensitivity to radiation found during the experiment wasconsistent with their diurnal vertical distribution in the lake. Our findings suggest that the phytoplankton from this very clearlake (10% of the surface UVB radiation at 305 nm reached 9.6m depth) were well adapted to the high UVB radiation charactensticof high-elevation sites.  相似文献

Abstract: The effects of solar ultraviolet radiation (UV) on carbon uptake, oxygen evolution and motility of marine phytoplankton were investigated in coastal waters at Kristineberg Marine Research Station on the west coast of Sweden (58° 30'N, 11° 30'E). The mean irradiances at noon above the water surface during the investigation period were: photosynthetic active radiation (PAR, 400–700 nm) 1670 μmol m−2 s−1; ultraviolet-A radiation (UV-A, 320–400 nm) 35.9 W m−2 and ultraviolet-B radiation (UV-B, 280–320 nm) 1.7 W m−2. UV-B radiation was much more attenuated with depth in the water column than were PAR and UV-A radiation. UV-B radiation could not be detected at depths greater than 100–150 cm. Inhibition of carbon uptake by UV-A and UV-B in natural phytoplankton populations was greatest at 50 cm depth and the effects of UV-B were greater than those of UV-A. At depths greater than 50 cm there was almost no effect of ultraviolet radiation on carbon uptake. PAR, UV-A and UV-B decreased oxygen evolution by the dinoflagellate Prorocentrum minimum . Inhibition of oxygen evolution was greater after 4 h than 2 h but it was not possible to distinguish the negative effects of the different light regimes. The motility of P. minimum was not affected by PAR, UV-A and UV-B. The importance of exposure of phytoplankton to different light regimes before being exposed to natural solar radiation is discussed.  相似文献

We examined how UV radiation and phosphorus (P) affect the taxonomic composition, abundance, and biomass of phytoplankton in an oligotrophic boreal lake. We exposed phytoplankton to three different solar radiation regimes (PAR + UV‐A radiation [UVAR]+ UV‐B radiation [UVBR], PAR + UVAR, and PAR only) and to five levels of P. The biomass of small chrysophytes was reduced by 350% after exposure to PAR + UVAR + UVBR compared with PAR only. No other taxa were found to be negatively affected by exposure to UVBR. Several taxa (e.g. Chry‐ sochromulina laurentiana Kling) were sensitive to UVAR, whereas others (e.g. Tabellaria flocculosa (Roth) Kutzing) were not affected by UV radiation exposure. Principal components analysis ordination separated phytoplankton that were negatively affected by UV radiation and/or positively affected by P treatments (e.g. small chrysophytes, Cryptomonas rostratiformis, T. flocculosa) from those that generally were unaffected by either treatment (e.g. desmids, some Cyanobacteria). Richness, Shannon‐Weaver diversity, and evenness were significantly higher in phytoplankton communities shielded from UVAR and UVBR. The relationship between diversity and richness was positive in all phytoplankton samples except in those exposed to UVBR. Thus, UVBR‐exposed phytoplankton communities were dominated by a few species even though the number of taxa remained relatively unchanged. Consequently, alterations in the UV environments of lakes resulting from climate warming (e.g. drought) and land‐use change (e.g. increased P export) will likely promote shifts in the community composition of lake phytoplankton.

Incubation experiments demonstrated a differential sensitivity to natural UV-radiation among the dominant phytoplankton species from three Arctic lakes, situated near Ny-Ålesund, Spitsbergen (79° N). The growth of small chlorophytes, diatoms and picocyanobacteria from two oligotrophic lakes was inhibited primarily by the shorter wavelength UV components, while the growth of the larger colony-forming species (cyanobacteria, Planktothrix sp., Woronichinia sp. and the chrysophyte, Uroglena americana Calkins) apparently was stimulated. These colonies (not easily eaten by daphnids) dominated at the end of the experiment in those treatments where the short wavelength UV components were not excluded. For the two oligotrophic localities, 70 and 61%, respectively, of total phytoplankton biovolume were edible in the treatments excluding short wavelength UV, compared to only 13 and 19%, respectively, in the treatments including such radiation. For the third, more productive and less transparent lake, the percentage of edible species in the treatments with and without short wavelength UV radiation did not differ (ca. 75% for both treatments).  相似文献

Effects of ambient solar UV radiation in the field and of artifical UV irradiation under controlled laboratory conditions were studied with natural phytoplankton populations from Helgoland, German Bight, North Sea. The pattern of pigments varied after UV-A or UV-B plus a low dose of UV-A radiation: UV-A usually induced a stimulation of pigment biosynthesis; whereas UV-B plus UV-A led to a reduction of the contents of chlorophyll a, diadinoxanthin, fucoxanthin, peridinin and an unknown carotenoid; content of diatoxanthin was significantly enhanced. The damaging effect on nitrogen assimilation by UV was more pronounced after artificial UV-B plus UV-A irradiance compared to the influence of ambient solar UV under field conditions. The uptake of inorganic nitrogen was dependent on the dose and exposure time of UV radiation as well as on the species composition. The uptake of 15N-nitrate by natural phytoplankton collected in spring was more sensitive to UV irradiation than the assimilation of 15N-ammonium. UV-A radiation with a small part of shorter wavelengths at 315 nm (Philips-lamps in conjunction with the cut-off filter WG 320) caused a reduction of up to 12% whereas a stimulation of the 15NH4+ uptake was observed after exposure to UV-A without any UV-B (Philips lamps TL 60W/09N). Pattern of 15N-incorporation into free amino acids and pool sizes varied in dependence on the applied nitrogen compound and on the irradiation conditions. The impact of UV radiation on the pattern of 15N-Iabelled free amino acids and the pool sizes was different. 15N enrichment into all the tested amino acids was reduced after 5 h UV-B plus UV-A exposure and after application of 15NH4+. A depression of the glutamate and glutamine pools was observed after addition of 15N-nitrate alone. Pools of all main amino acids from phytoplankton in summer 1993/94 were inhibited by UV irradiance. Results are discussed with reference to the UV target (e.g. enzymes, pigments) and the adaptation to the environmental conditions.  相似文献

During spring 2002 and fall 2003 we carried out experiment in tropical southern China to determine the short- and long-term effects of solar ultraviolet radiation (UVR, 280-400 nm) on photosynthesis and growth in the unicellular red alga Porphyridium cruentum. During the experimentation, cells of P. cruentum were exposed to three radiation treatments: (a) samples exposed to PAR (400-700 nm) + UV-A (315-400 nm) + UV-B (280-315 nm)(PAB treatment); (b) samples exposed to PAR + UV-A (PA treatment) and, (c) samples exposed only to PAR (P treatment). To assess the short-term impact of UVR as a function of irradiance, we determined photosynthesis versus irradiance (Pvs.E) curves. From these curves the maximum carbon uptake rate (P(max)) and the light saturation parameter (E(k)) were obtained, with values of approximately 12.8-14.4 microg C (microg chl a)(-1) h(-1), and approximately 250 micromol m(-2) s(-1), respectively. A significant UVR effect on assimilation numbers was observed when samples were exposed at irradiances higher than E(k), with samples exposed to full solar radiation having significant less carbon fixation than those exposed only to PAR. Biological weighting functions of P. cruentum were used to evaluate the UVR impact per unit energy received by the cells; the data indicate that the species is as sensitive as natural phytoplankton from the southern China Sea; however, it is much more resistant than Antarctic assemblages. When evaluating the combined effects of mixing speed and UVR, it was seen that samples rotating fast within the upper mixed layer were less inhibited by UVR as compared to those under slow mixing or in fixed samples. Growth of P. cruentum over a week-long experiment was not affected by neither UVR nor UV-A; additionally, low photoinhibition was found at the end as compared to that at the beginning of this experiment. Our results thus indicate that, although on short-term basis P. cruentum is affected by solar UVR, it can acclimate to minimize UVR-induced effects when given enough time.  相似文献

Polychromatic response spectra for the induction of UV absorbing mycosporine-like amino acids (MAAs) were calculated after exposing small thalli of the red alga Chondrus crispus under various cut-off filters to natural solar radiation on the North Sea island Helgoland, Germany. The laboratory-grown specimens typically contain only traces of palythine and synthesise five different MAAs rapidly and in high concentrations after being transplanted into shallow water. The resulting qualitative and quantitative patterns of MAA induction differed markedly with respect to spectral distribution. Furthermore, the wavebands effective for MAA induction vary within the MAA. UV-B radiation had a negative effect on the accumulation of the major MAAs shinorine (λmax=334 nm) and palythine (λmax=320 nm), while short wavelength UV-A exhibits the highest quantum efficiency on their synthesis. In contrast, the synthesis of asterina-330 (λmax=330 nm), palythinol (λmax=332 nm) and palythene (λmax=360 nm) was mainly induced by UV-B radiation. Whether the synthesis of shinorine and palythine is induced by a photoreceptor with an absorption maximum in the short wavelength UV-A and whether a second photoreceptor absorbing UV-B radiation is responsible for the induction of asterina-330, palythinol and palythene remains to be studied. Our results show that C. crispus has a high capacity to adapt flexibly the qualitative and quantitative MAA concentration to the prevailing spectral distribution of irradiance. On one hand, this is regarded as an important aspect with respect to the acclimation of algae to increasing UV-B irradiance in the context of ongoing depletion of stratospheric ozone. On the other hand, the experiment demonstrates that UV-A irradiance is more important for the induction of the major MAAs shinorine and palythine than UV-B.  相似文献

Abstract The effects of solar and artificial ultraviolet radiation on the motility and orientation of the dinoflagellate Y-100 were studied. The cells show a weak photokinesis but a pronounced phototaxis which is consistently positive between 1 and 100 klx (= 4 mW m−2 to 400 mW m−2); the precision of orientation increases with the fluence rate. Unfiltered solar radiation as well as artificial ultraviolet radiation reduce the percentage of motile cells increasingly with exposure time but the velocity of the still motile cells is less affected. Unirradiated control cells show a negative gravitaxis. After short exposure to solar or artificial ultraviolet radiation the precision of gravitaxis decreases and after prolonged exposure the cells start to actively move downward in the water column (positive gravitaxis). Phototaxis is also strongly impaired by ultraviolet radiation.  相似文献

Increased interest in the environmental applicability of calcareous dinoflagellate cysts for palaeo-environmental studies arose in the last two decades, when it was discovered that they constitute a widespread and abundant group within the calcareous phytoplankton. As primary producers they are directly influenced by environmental Parameters of the surrounding water masses, and therefore extremely suitable for detailed palaeo-environmental and -oceanographical reconstructions. During the last years, detailed investigations on their distribution in surface sediments of the South Atlantic Ocean, the Mediterranean Sea and the Arabian Sea were carried out, in order to reveal which environmental parameters influence their distribution. This, in turn, formed the base for palaeo-environmental and -oceanographical reconstructions. The compilation of the available data on calcareous dinoflagellate ecology, morphology, taxonomy and palaeo-environmental application presented here demonstrates their ample application potential as palaeo-environmental tools.   相似文献

High solar radiation along with extreme transparency leads to high penetration of solar radiation in the Red Sea, potentially harmful to biota inhabiting the upper water column, including zooplankton. Here we show, based on experimental assessments of solar radiation dose-mortality curves on eight common taxa, the mortality of zooplankton in the oligotrophic waters of the Red Sea to increase steeply with ambient levels of solar radiation in the Red Sea. Responses curves linking solar radiation doses with zooplankton mortality were evaluated by exposing organisms, enclosed in quartz bottles, allowing all the wavelengths of solar radiation to penetrate, to five different levels of ambient solar radiation (100%, 21.6%, 7.2%, 3.2% and 0% of solar radiation). The maximum mortality rates under ambient solar radiation levels averaged (±standard error of the mean, SEM) 18.4±5.8% h−1, five-fold greater than the average mortality in the dark for the eight taxa tested. The UV-B radiation required for mortality rates to reach ½of maximum values averaged (±SEM) 12±5.6 h−1% of incident UVB radiation, equivalent to the UV-B dose at 19.2±2.7 m depth in open coastal Red Sea waters. These results confirm that Red Sea zooplankton are highly vulnerable to ambient solar radiation, as a consequence of the combination of high incident radiation and high water transparency allowing deep penetration of damaging UV-B radiation. These results provide evidence of the significance of ambient solar radiation levels as a stressor of marine zooplankton communities in tropical, oligotrophic waters. Because the oligotrophic ocean extends across 70% of the ocean surface, solar radiation can be a globally-significant stressor for the ocean ecosystem, by constraining zooplankton use of the upper levels of the water column and, therefore, the efficiency of food transfer up the food web in the oligotrophic ocean.  相似文献

Phytoplankton of the Barents Sea - the end of a growth season   总被引:2,自引:2,他引:0
Few phytoplankton investigations have been carried out at the end of the growth season, particularly in the Arctic. In the present study, we monitored the phytoplankton distribution in relation to environmental conditions in the Barents Sea in September 1988 and October 1987. An ice-edge bloom was found in September at 80° N in a stratified meltwater layer, lasting until new ice formation and southward advection of the ice cover commenced in the middle of the month. Phytoplankton populations in the marginal ice zone at this time were not nutrient limited, but biomass was probably reduced due to grazing by small copepods. Lower chl/C and chl/N ratios in the phytoplankton above the pycnocline than below in September indicated light-adapted populations. In October the particulate matter was rich in carbon, but had low chlorophyll content, indicating high levels of detritus. The hydrographic conditions in October differed greatly from those observed in September. The combination of freezing and mixing resulted in higher salinity and nutrient concentrations, and caused a homogeneous distribution, as well as reduction, of the phytoplankton stocks in the upper water column. During late October, low incoming radiation, combined with deep vertical mixing, resulted in light-limiting conditions for the algae, eventually stopping photosynthesis and terminating the growth season in the northern Barents Sea. The influence of the seasonal development of microplankton communities on the cycling of dimethylsulfide (DMS) and its precursor dimethylsulfoniopropionate (DMSP) was investigated along a South–North gradient (36–59°N) in the Northwest (NW) Atlantic Ocean. Three surveys allowed the sampling of surface mixed layer (SML) waters at stations extending from the subtropical gyre to the Greenland Current during May, July and October 2003. Pools and transformation rates of DMSP and DMS were quantified and related to prevailing physical and biochemical conditions, phytoplankton abundance and taxonomic composition, as well as bacterioplankton abundance and leucine uptake. The South–North progression of the diatom bloom, a prominent feature in the NW Atlantic, did not influence the production of DMS whereas conditions in the N Atlantic Drift lead to a persistent bloom of DMSP-rich flagellate-dominated phytoplankton community and high net DMS production rates. Macroscale patterns of the observed variables were further explored using principal component analysis (PCA). The first axis of the PCA showed a strong association between the spatio-temporal distribution of DMSP and the abundance of several phytoplankton groups including dinoflagellates and prymnesiophytes, as well as with microbial-mediated DMSPd consumption and yields and rates of the conversion of DMSP into DMS. The second axis revealed a strong association between concentrations of DMS and SML depth and photosynthetically active radiation, a result supporting the prominent role of solar radiation as a driver of DMS dynamics.  相似文献

The potential effect of UV radiation on the composition of coastal marine bacterioplankton communities was investigated. Dilution cultures with seawater collected from the surface mixed layer of the coastal North Sea were exposed to different ranges of natural or artificial solar radiation for up to two diurnal cycles. The composition of the bacterioplankton community prior to exposure was compared to that after exposure to the different radiation regimes using denaturing gradient gel electrophoresis (DGGE) of 16S rRNA and 16S ribosomal DNA. Only minor changes in the composition of the bacterial community in the different radiation regimes were detectable. Sequencing of selected bands obtained by DGGE revealed that some species of the Flexibacter-Cytophaga-Bacteroides (FCB) group were sensitive to UV radiation while other species of the FCB group were resistant. Overall, only up to approximately 10% of the operational taxonomic units present in the dilution cultures appeared to be affected by UV radiation. Thus, we conclude that UV radiation has little effect on the composition of coastal marine bacterioplankton communities in the North Sea.  相似文献

During January March 1996 the U.S. Antarctic Marine Living Resources program carried out an extensive multidisciplinary study in a 40,000 km2 sampling grid around Elephant Island, Antarctica. The physical, chemical, optical, and biological characteristics of the upper water column (0–750 m) were determined at 91 hydrographic stations. Analysis of the temperature and salinity data showed that six different hydrographic zones could be differentiated. The biological (phytoplankton distribution and abundance) and chemical (inorganic nutrient concentrations) data also showed characteristic differences within each of these six zones. In spite of high concentrations of inorganic N, P, and Si in all six zones, all stations in the northwest portion of the sampling grid (Drake Passage waters) showed very low chlorophyll-a concentrations in surface waters and a sub-surface maximum at increased depth. As stations in this zone have a relatively stable upper mixed layer of 40 m, excess macro-nutrients, and adequate solar radiation for maximal photosynthetic rates, this suggests that rates of primary production in this zone are limited by a micro-nutrient such as Fe. Phytoplankton abundance was much greater in the Bransfield Strait, in waters influenced by Bellingshausen Sea Water, and in the frontal zones where these water masses mix with Drake Passage waters. Relatively low and deeply distributed phytoplankton abundance was found at all stations in the southeastern portion of our sampling grid, where the upper water column was very weakly stratified and showed the characteristics of Weddell Sea water. The areas of enhanced phytoplankton biomass in the AMLR sampling grid roughly correspond to the areas where krill are generally also found in greater abundance. The overall biological productivity of the Elephant Island region would thus appear to be dependent upon the circulation patterns of the major water masses that intrude into this area. Seasonal and vertical distribution of tintinnids, non-loricate ciliates and micrometazoa were studied in Kaštela Bay (central Adriatic Sea) throughout 1995. The species composition of tintinnids and copepods were studied as well. This is the first estimation of non-loricate ciliate biomass in the coastal area of the central Adriatic. Non-loricate ciliates were quantitatively the best represented ciliated protozoa, whereas nauplii were the most numerous micrometazoan organisms. Temperature affected the distribution of most micrometazoan components of the zooplankton and that of non-loricate ciliates. The temperature-dependent presence of individual size categories of non-loricate ciliates was also established. Apart from the interaction between microzooplankton groups, the influence of biotic factors, such as phytoplankton, bacteria, non-pigmented nanoflagellates (NNF) and mesozooplankton, was also discussed. The abundance of ciliates was controlled by both food supply (phytoplankton and NNF) and micrometazoan grazing. The results point to very complex trophic relationships within the planktonic community, suggesting that microzooplankton could be an important link between the microbial food web and higher trophic levels. The effects of solar radiation on motility, photoorientation and pigmentation have been studied in a freshwater Cryptomonas species. The diaphototactic orientation performed by the cells is impaired within about 90 min of solar radiation. Likewise, the percentage of motile cells within the population and the average velocity of the swimming cells decreases within about the same exposure time. This effect is not due to a thermal stress but rather seems to be caused by the solar UV-B component, since decreasing short wavelength UV radiation by means of an artificial ozone filter or UV cut-off filters increased the tolerated exposure time. Solar radiation also bleached the photosynthetic pigments of the cells as shown by absorption difference spectra.  相似文献

Abstract: The effects of solar radiation on photosynthetic oxygen production and pulse amplitude modulated (PAM) fluorescence were measured in the marine brown macroalga Padina pavonia harvested from different depths from the Greek coast near Korinth. In fluence rate-response curves the light compensation point for photosynthetic oxygen production increased and the saturation level decreased with increasing exposure time to solar radiation. Cutting off the UV-B wavelength range (280–315 nm) from solar radiation reduced the inhibition of photosynthesis, and the organisms were less affected when all of the UV radiation was filtered out. Algae collected from 7 m depth were much more prone to photoinhibition than those harvested from rock pools exposed to unfiltered solar radiation. During continuous exposure to solar radiation, rock pool algae showed photoinhibition after longer periods of time than specimens from 7 m or from dark adapted habitats. When subjected to unfiltered solar radiation the ratio of the variable fluorescence to the maximal fluorescence     (Fv = Fm− Fo) rapidly declined with increasing exposure time. However, again algae from 7 m depth were more prone to photoinhibition than rock pool algae. The differences between the two ecological strains were less obvious when UV-B or total UV was removed from solar radiation. Only in the latter case a complete recovery was observed after 2 h while, when exposed to unifiltered sunlight, only the rock pool algae recovered completely within that time.  相似文献

The rapid melting of glaciers as well as the loss of sea ice in the Amundsen Sea makes it an ideal environmental setting for the investigation of the impacts of climate change in the Antarctic on the distribution and production of mesozooplankton. We examined the latitudinal distribution of mesozooplankton and their grazing impacts on phytoplankton in the Amundsen Sea during the early austral summer from December 27, 2010 to January 13, 2011. Mesozooplankton followed a latitudinal distribution in relation to hydrographic and environmental features, with copepods dominating in the oceanic area and euphausiids dominating in the polynya. Greater Euphausia crystallorophias biomass in the polynya was associated with lower salinity and higher food concentration (chlorophyll a, choanoflagellates, and heterotrophic dinoflagellates). The grazing impact of three copepods (Rhincalanus gigas, Calanoides acutus, and Metridia gerlachei) on phytoplankton was low, with the consumption of 3 % of phytoplankton standing stock and about 4 % of daily primary production. Estimated daily carbon rations for each of the three copepods were also relatively low (<10 %), barely enough to cover metabolic demands. This suggests that copepods may rely on food other than phytoplankton and that much of the primary production is channeled through microzooplankton. Daily carbon rations for E. crystallorophias were high (up to 49 %) with the grazing impact accounting for 17 % of the phytoplankton biomass and 84 % of primary production. The presence of E. crystallorophias appears to be a critical factor regulating phytoplankton blooms and determining the fate of fixed carbon in the coastal polynyas of the Amundsen Sea.  相似文献
