Synopsis The relative importance of intraspecific competition and interspecific competition with killifish on the breeding activities of territorial male pupfish was investigated in two populations. Compared to Lake Francis, pupfish densities in Mirror Lake were higher, individuals were larger, and intraspecific aggression was more important than interspecific interactions with killifish. Killifish had little impact on the activity budgets of territorial male pupfish, but were excluded from favored breeding habitats. The opposite pattern was observed in Lake Francis. Killifish were numerically dominant as well as relatively larger than pupfish, and they interfered with the breeding activities of territorial males. In Lake Francis most of the agonistic activities of territorial male pupfish were directed toward killifish. Asymmetries in the interactions between pupfish and killifish in the two lakes also were reflected in qualitative and quantitative differences in the breeding activities of pupfish. In Mirror Lake the frequency of agonistic and breeding behaviors increased over the breeding season, but in Lake Francis they decreased. The underlying factors responsible for the observed competitive asymmetries between the species in the two habitats are not known. However, the higher salinity tolerances of pupfish may, in part, have accounted for both their numerical dominance and their size-advantage over killifish in the more saline environment of Mirror Lake. Physiological and ecological factors may thus play an important role in the outcome of competitive asymmetrics between species.  相似文献

ABSTRACT

The songs of Anthus spinoletta littoralis and A. pratensis, in sympatric populations in SW Sweden were recorded, analysed in sound spectrographs and tested in the field. The purpose was to investigate: a) if the strophes are species specifically and individually distinct and, if so, whether pipits are able to make such distinctions; b) if the species-specific and individual-specific patterns are concentrated in different sections of the song and, if so, whether the species-specific section transmits individual-specific information and the individual-specific section transmits species-specific information as well.

The basic structure of the syllables in the terminating section of the strophe was found to be intraspecifically stereotyped, but varied between the two species. Replay experiments showed that territorial males could discriminate between con- and heterospecific strophes and this ability persisted when the terminating section of the strophe was replayed alone. The terminating part of the strophe did not seem to transmit individual-specific information to conspecific males. On the other hand, the basic structure of the syllables in the first section of the strophe was intraindividually stereotyped but varied between most conspecific males. Playback experiments showed that a territorial male could discriminate his neighbours' song patterns and this ability remained intact when the introductory phrase of the strophe was replayed alone. Both song pattern and position were necessary properties of the identifying signal in these pipits. But the introductory phrase of a total stranger did not seem to transmit unambiguous species-specific information to conspecific males.  相似文献

The spawing behavior ofHexagrammos otakii. H. octogrammus andH. agrammus was observed in two different regions of northern Japan using underwater video cameras placed near nests guarded by males. The spawning behavior of the three species consisted of similar patterns, although body size and nuptial coloration and nest location of territorial maleH. otakii differed from those of the other twoHexagrammos species. The courtship display of territorial males in each species involved rushing, butting and undulation of the trunk. When a female entered the nest, the male leaned his head on the future spawning bed in the nest and spasmodically undulated his trunk. The female that responded to the courtship laid her eggs within the seaweed bed. The territorial male then passed over the eggs, touching his genital pore to the egg mass, and released sperm. Sneaking by other males was frequently observed following the sperm emission. In both regions, females ofH. octogrammus andH. agrammus commonly responded to courtship of maleH. otakii and mated with them, but not vice versa. Possble reasons for the natural occurrence of such unidirectional hybridization are discussed.  相似文献

The reproductive behavior of the dragonfly,Orthetrum japonicum, is described. Behavioral processes of turnover of territorial males, simultaneous guarding of 2 females by a male, and copulation by non-territorial males are described. The males with longer hind wings won the territorial conflicts more frequently. The total duration of territorial residence of a given male was correlated with the number of his matings, but not correlated with the length of his abdomen or hind wings. The territorial site with the lower degree of vegetation cover was occupied by males more consistently. Males in more consistently occupied territorial sites did not have longer abdomen and hind wings than males in less consistently occupied sites. The territorial site where the larger number of copulations was observed was not occupied more consistently. Selection episode analysis using the method of Arnold & Wade (1984a, b) showed that direct selection on the hind wing length favored the short wing and that direct selection on the abdomen length favored the long abdomen during mating.  相似文献

This study examines the temporal pattern of spawning behavior by the territorial (i.e. nest-holding) grass goby male, Zosterisessor ophiocephalus, in response to sneak intrusions by the small parasitic male under controlled laboratory conditions. The spawning activity of the territorial male consists of a sequence of upside–down movements on the ceiling of the nest accompanied by undulations of the body and sperm release. Five pairs of one territorial male and one parasitic male, each kept inside a large tank provided with an artificial buried nest (always occupied by the territorial male) and one small tunnel-shaped shelter (always occupied by the small male), were observed during one-female spawning taking place in the innermost part of the nest (i.e. the nest chamber). During the spawning, the presence of the small male nearby the nest openings elicited aggressive behavior and increased nest patrolling by the territorial male. In one spawn the small male never attempted to enter the nest. In four spawns the small male entered one to three times the nest chamber (sneaks), staying there from 2 to 203 s until the large male chased him away. The temporal patterning of the spawning activity by the territorial male (bouts of upside–down, U–D), and its changes following a sneak by the small male, were investigated using bout analysis and correlative tests. Results showed the length of bouts U–D did not change significantly after a sneak intrusion. whereas gap length (i.e. the period between subsequent bouts U–D) decreased significantly after each sneak intrusion. The mean duty cycle of bouts U–D tended to be positively correlated to the number of sneaker intrusions of each replicate. Results are discussed in the light of current knowledge on sperm competition among externally fertilizing teleosts.  相似文献

Mockingbirds normally secrete little or no testosterone during the period of autumnal territoriality. To determine the behavioral effects of exogenously administered testosterone, 20-mm lengths of Silastic tubing filled with crystalline testosterone were implanted into free-living resident mockingbirds during the autumn. Control residents were given sealed empty implants. Focal animal sampling showed that T-implanted males sang significantly more than controls. Perhaps as a consequence, a significantly greater percentage of the T-implanted males acquired mates. Though nest building does not naturally occur in autumn, T-implanted males also showed significantly more nest building than control males. However, T-implanted males only built if there was a female in the territory, suggesting a synergy between the presence of testosterone and social cues provided by the female. Examination of the effects of testosterone on territorial aggression showed that despite the high levels of territorial activity common in this species in autumn, territorial fights were unaffected by the presence of testosterone. One aggressive call, known to function in fall territorial defense, was significantly decreased in T-implanted versus control males. The presence of fall testosterone appears to stimulate a number of reproductive activities in mockingbirds, leaving autumnal aggressive interactions either unchanged or decreased. We discuss the application of these data to the effects of testosterone on the mockingbird's reproductive behavior during the breeding season.  相似文献

Most canid species show cooperative breeding at least occasionally. The helper-at-the-den system, when extra adults serve as helpers by feeding and guarding the cubs of an alpha pair, has been observed but not studied in any detail in wild Arctic foxes (Alopex lagopus). During a 3-months study of arctic foxes in two enclosures of 4 ha each, we measured the social behaviour during the reproductive season. Older foxes dominated younger ones and males dominated females of the same age. A litter with one surviving cub was born in one enclosure. The alpha male increased his rate of urine marking and barking and fed the alpha female both before and after the birth of the litter. However, about 10 days after the birth, the alpha female died. The cub was fed by his putative father, his sister and his brother (both one year old). The one year old female increased her rate of territorial defence, measured as urine marking and barking, when the mother died. The subordinate females were probably suppressed from breeding by the high aggression levels and territorial defence of the dominant females in each enclosure. The dominant female in the second enclosure came into heat after the death of the alpha female (her mother) in the first enclosure. These changes in behaviour can probably be explained by sexual inhibition by the alpha female while she was present. The significance of territorial defence and dominance, inbreeding avoidance, sexual suppression and evolution of helping behaviour are discussed.  相似文献

Bird song may play an important role for communication among territorial neighbours, but the effect of neighbours on song use is still not well known. My previous field observations suggested that male chipping sparrows, Spizella passerina, use the dawn chorus for interactions among neighbouring males, and use day song for female attraction. To determine how these social factors may influence dawn and daytime singing behaviour, I conducted a series of experiments in which I removed the male neighbours or the female mate of territorial males during 1998-2000. Following removal of all neighbouring males, the solitary male either stopped or reduced his dawn chorus (N=9), but did not change his daytime singing behaviour. After one of the neighbouring males was returned to his territory, the focal male resumed and increased his dawn bout, accompanied with close-range countersinging. Following the removal of a territorial male's mate, the widowed male did not change the dawn chorus, but significantly increased his day song. This study thus revealed that, in chipping sparrows, the presence or absence of neighbouring males has a significant effect on the dawn chorus singing behaviour of territorial males. The presence or absence of a male's mate, in contrast, has a strong influence on a male's daytime singing behaviour. This study also supports the hypothesis that the dawn chorus and daytime song have different functions.  相似文献

Males of the calopterygid damselfly Hetaerina vulnerata remain with their mates after copulating with them. The species exhibits two unusual features of post-copulatory mate guarding. First, a male will often leave his territory to accompany a female in tandem on a search for oviposition sites elsewhere. Second, a male will perch near his ovipositing female even though she completely submerges when egg-laying and cannot be captured and mated by another male while she is underwater. These activities carry two potential costs: (1) a male may miss other receptive females while guarding one mate and (2) he may lose his territory to an interloper while he is absent. These costs were low, however, because territorial males secured only one mating per 3.6 days on average. Moreover, 23 times out of 26, territorial males reclaimed their plots quickly after being away for 30–60 min. The gain from postcopulatory guarding came from being present to recapture a female should she fly up from the water after rejecting an oviposition site. There was a 40% chance that a female would leave one site to search for another during an oviposition bout. If the male were not present, his mate would be captured and mated by another individual (no female ever selected an oviposition site without being carried to it by a male). Her new partner would fertilize the remaining eggs in the female's clutch (if sperm precedence occurs in this species). The total number of eggs fertilized by a male will be affected by how well he prevents any one mate from copulating again before she lays her entire clutch and the total number of receptive females he captures. The variation in the degree of mate guarding by male odonates seems to be the evolutionary outcome of differences in fitness gains derived from these two competing activities in different ecological settings.  相似文献

The paper lists basic data on the role of sounds in fish behavior. The involvement of acoustic signaling in the control of reproductive, territorial, agonistic, aggressive, social, and feeding behavior in fish that differ in the systematics and mode of life is considered. Species and population specifics and individual sound variation in fish, diurnal and seasonal cyclicity of sound activity, and behavior that accompany acoustic signaling and the effects upon it of different environmental factors are considered. Evidence on the formation of acoustic signaling in ontogenesis of fish is provided; the range of sound signaling and correspondence between sound spectra and auditory sensitivity are discussed. Possible applied aspects of results of study of fish bioacoustics are analyzed.  相似文献

InNannophya pygmaea, ovipositing females were frequently disturbed by conspecific males. Disturbed females often copulated with one of these males or flew away from the pool. Females which flew away from the pool due to male disturbance often returned later the same day and mated with different males. A territorial male would guard his ovipositing mate by hovering above her, presumably trying to prevent her from moving out of his territory. A non-territorial male would also guard his mate in a similar way, both at a vacant water area which was not occupied by any territorial males, or within the territory of a resident male. In addition, both territorial and non-territorial males chased intruding males in an attempt to prevent their mates from being stolen. Territorial males defended their mates better than non-territorial males. Both males and females often mated more than once in the course of a single day. Some territorial males copulated with a new female while another mate oviposited in their territories. This observation supported the “multiple mating hypothesis” proposed by Alcock (1979) and Uéda (1979) but other evidence suggested that this is an inadequate explanation for the non-contact guarding ofN. pygmaea.  相似文献

The morphological differences between the testis and testicular gland of territorial and nonterritorial males of Tripterygion tripteronotus and T. delaisi were examined and correlated with differences in reproductive behaviour. In territorial males of both species the testicular gland is much more developed than in non-territorial males. Larger cellular and nuclear sizes in the territorial males indicate that the activity of the gland cells is enhanced. These cells contain SER, numerous lipid droplets and mitochondria with lamellar cristae. Absence of 3β-HSD activity at these sites points to lack of a steroidogenic potency. In both territorial and non-territorial fish, steroid-producing Leydig cells have been demonstrated in the connective tissue betweeen the testis and the testicular gland, and around the collecting sperm duct. In addition, 3β-HSD activity has been found in the scarce interstitial Leydig cells of territorial fish. Morphometric data indicate an enhanced activity of the Leydig cells in territorial fish.  相似文献

In most songbirds, the processes of song learning and territory establishment overlap in the early life and a young bird usually winds up with songs matching those of his territorial neighbors in his first breeding season. In the present study, we examined the relationships among the timing of territory establishment, the pattern of song learning and territorial success in a sedentary population of song sparrows (Melospiza melodia). Males in this population tend to learn their songs from their neighbors and consequently they show high song sharing with neighbors and use these shared songs preferentially in interactions with them. Males also show significant variation in the timing of territory establishment, ranging from their natal summer to the next spring. Using a three-year dataset, we found that the timing of territory establishment did not systematically affect the composition of the song repertoire of the tutee: early establishers and late establishers learned equally as much from their primary tutors and had a similar number of tutors and similar repertoire sizes, nor did timing of territory establishment affect subsequent survival on territory. Therefore, the song-learning program of song sparrows seems versatile enough to lead to high song sharing even for birds that establish territories relatively late.  相似文献

Males of the carpenter beeXylocopa varipuncta Patton wait for females to visit them as they hover at landmark territories along ridgelines on some spring afternoons. While hovering, males advertize their presence by releasing a pheromone that attracts passing females. If males have limited time to invest in territorial hovering and signaling, then they should engage in these activities more often at times when mate-searching females are most likely to visit landmark territories. The number of females flying near male territories varies greatly over the course of afternoons and from day to day. Measures of female activity and male territorial activity were highly correlated at one study site, both in terms of changes within afternoons and in terms of day-to-day fluctuations. This result supports the hypothesis that males ofX. varipuncta time their mateattracting behavior to maximize contacts with receptive females.  相似文献

Acidic and basic lysophospholipase activities (LPL) have been separated by ion-exchange chromatography of barley extracts. The basic activity predominates in the starchy endosperm of germinating barley and in the medium of hormone-stimulated half-seeds; the acidic activity is the predominant form in the medium of hormone-stimulated aleurone layers. Addition of either starchy endosperm or EDTA to the acidic activity produces the basic activity. The two activities display the same pH optimum and have similar Km values. Inactivation profiles of LPLs with immunoglobulin G (IgG) prepared against the purified basic LPL are the same. The acidic LPL obtained from the incubation medium from stimulated aleurone layers appears in the void volume on gel filtration with Bio-Gel P100. Acid phosphatase and alpha-amylase in the same incubation medium appear at their expected elution volumes on this column. Gel filtration in the presence of EDTA results in the acidic activity eluting in a volume characteristic of the basic LPL (Mr, 40,000). On Bio-Gel P300 the acidic activity peak is centered at Mr, 160,000. SDS-gel electrophoresis of fractions across this peak shows a simple distribution of proteins eluting with Mr greater than or equal to 160,000. The potential role of an aggregate in the secretion of lipolytic proteins is discussed.  相似文献

Trade-offs between reproductive effort and activities that are likely to enhance survival have been studied extensively in harem defense ungulates. However, among resource defense systems, ecological determinants of the variation in male reproductive effort are less understood. The aim of this study was to assess the extent of the effort devoted to territorial defense by male guanacos and how this is affected by predation risk. Time allocation to different activities and displays of aggressive behavior were compared between territorial and bachelor male guanacos within two populations with contrasting levels of predation risk. Territorial males devoted almost twice the time than bachelors to vigilance and moving, at the expense of foraging time. Aggressive interactions were more frequent and severe for territorial males than for bachelors, based on observation. These differences were larger during the reproductive season but remained statistically significant after this period, highlighting the extended effort towards territorial defense beyond the peak of reproductive activity. In contrast to previous observations on females of the same populations, there was no effect of predation risk level or group size on male time allocation, suggesting that under the ecological conditions of the study, intra-sexual competition entails a stronger influence on male individual behavior than predation risk level.  相似文献

A large amplitude blood pressure oscillation occurs during social defeat in a territorial fight between male rats, and during the application of a psychosocial stimulus associated with this defeat. Synchronous recording of blood pressure, intrathoracic pressure and diaphragm activity shows that the blood pressure oscillation coincides with a typical respiratory pattern called 'pressure breathing', during which a strongly positive intrathoracic pressure with expiration can be observed. The expiration was relatively prolonged and accompanied by a rise in blood pressure and a decrease in heart frequency. These alterations outlast the applied social respectively psychosocial stimulations. The results of this study suggest that behaviorally induced pressure breathing is of importance to attentional processes during social stimulation. The contribution to the development of hypertension is discussed.  相似文献

To understand the dynamics of sexual selection, one needs to identify the basis of female choice in mating. Daily censuses showed that most spawns of individual female bluehead wrasses, Thalassoma bifasciatum, occurred at one of several available mating sites, either in a group-spawning aggregation of small males or with a large territorial male. Most females were not located near their principal mating site during the non-spawning period of the day. Females were thus exposed to other males and sites and should have had the opportunity for choice. When a resident territorial male disappeared or was removed experimentally from a mating site, females did not alter their fidelity to that site. Furthermore, manipulations showed that when a territorial male changed the location of his mating activity to an adjacent site, females did not follow him but continued to mate at their customary site. Thus mating sites, rather than the males occupying them, appeared to be the objects of female choice. The bright coloration and courtship behaviour of larger males may demonstrate the safety of a particular site rather than indicating some aspect of male quality.  相似文献

During an intergroup conflict an adult male white-handed gibbon (Hylobates lar) from one group was attacked and wounded by the adult male of a neighboring group. The wounded male's calling behavior, general activity level, feeding, and participation in territorial defense declined dramatically in the days following the injury as he instead spent long periods resting and tending the wound. The normal and healthy appearance of this male prior to injury, the circumstances of the fight that caused the injury, the resultant deterioration in normal maintenance and social behavior, and finally the apparent infection of the wound by insect larvae all suggested that his disappearance 24 days later was the result of death due directly or indirectly to the wound he had suffered. The observations reported here suggest that the ritualization of territorial aggression in this species has not eliminated risks of serious injury and death. © 1993 Wiley-Liss, Inc.  相似文献
