The thyrotropin (TSH) producing cells are distributed in the rostral and proximal pars distalis. This cell type is the smallest and most infrequent cell of the adenohypophysis. Its cytology is similar to the smallest gonadotropic (GTH) cells although the two cell types can be separated by the size of the small secretory granules (diameter less than 200 nm) in the TSH cells. In presmolts and smolts the cells are more numerous than in parr and adult salmon and have cytological features indicating an increased activity. This was also the case after intraperitoneal injections of synthetic TRH. Antisera to carp GTH and salmon GTH cross-reacted with both the GTH and the TSH cells. Anti-human TSH cross-reacted only with the TSH cells which confirms the assumption of antigenic similarity between human and fish TSH.  相似文献

Synopsis Sexually immature and sexually mature precocious male Baltic salmon,Salmo salar, parr from Umeälven (Ume river) were tested for rheotactic behaviour and adaptation to seawater before, during, and after the time period for smolt migration. Size of fish at the beginning of the experiment in January was on average 13.5 cm. Rheotactic behaviour was tested in annular stream tanks with photocells to measure upstream and downstream movements. Samples of fish were given a Seawater challenge test at monthly intervals in order to determine their ability to adapt to 20%. saltwater. During spring, both immature and sexually precocious parr became silvery and showed progressive development of downstream-directed movements. In early June the fish exhibited good hypoosmoregulatory ability in 20%. saltwater and swimming was predominantly downstream. During late June and early July there was a marked reversal in swimming behaviour, accompanied by a dramatic change in saltwater adaptation. The fish moved mainly upstream and showed decreasing ability to meet the seawater challenge test. This was accompanied by a loss of silvery coloration. The annual cycle of swimming behaviour and seawater adaptation is discussed in relation to the appearance of a smolt-window, i.e., a critical interval for smolt migration.  相似文献

Early sexual maturity occurred in the majority of male Atlantic salmon parr. Levels of the plasma androgens testosterone and 11-ketotestosterone rose steadily as the male parr matured, and decreased as the testes regressed. No such progressive changes were observed in the plasma gonadotrophin (GTH) levels, although the pituitary GTH levels were much higher in mature than in immature male parr; reasons for this, incluiding the possibility that the GTH radioimmunoassay employed is inadequate, are discussed. All female parr remained immature throughout the year, although the gonadosomatic index did show an annual cycle. Adult salmon had higher GTH and sex steroid levels than parr at the same stage of sexual maturity, the levels corresponding to the degree of sexual development of the adult fish.  相似文献

Electrophysiological recordings from the olfactory epithelium have shown that 17 alpha,20 beta-dihydroxy-4-pregnen-3-one 20-sulphate (17,20 beta-P-sulphate; a conjugate of the oocyte-maturation-inducing steroid in teleosts) is a potent odorant in precocious male Atlantic salmon (Salmo salar L.) parr. However, the olfactory epithelium of these fish only appeared to be responsive to the steroid after stimulation with the urine of ovulated female Atlantic salmon. Immature fish did not respond at any time. Stimulation with urine from immature and precocious male Atlantic salmon parr did not make the olfactory epithelium of precocious male salmon parr responsive to the steroid. 17,20 beta-P-sulphate was found in the urines of ovulated females, precocious male parr and mature male Atlantic salmon. The findings are discussed in relation to the possible role of 17,20 beta-P-sulphate in the physiology of Atlantic salmon.  相似文献

Smolt traits (length, age) and timing of smolt migration of wild Atlantic salmon, Salmo salar L., were investigated in the Simojoki River, northern Baltic Sea. The aim was to determine whether they responded to changes in parr length, parr density and temperature from 2000 to 2014. Annual electrofishing surveys and smolt numbers determined parr densities by springtime trapping in the river mouth. During the smolt trapping period captured parr and smolts were aged from scales. Water temperature was measured daily. Mean length decreased from 137 mm (TL) to 129 mm among 2‐year‐old smolts, and from 150 mm to 139 mm among 3‐year‐olds. Median date of the smolt migration was 10 days earlier, from early June to late May during the study period, linked to the rise in air temperature in May at the nearby Kemi‐Tornio airport. However, the median day temperature and the mean daily water temperatures during the second (Q2) and third (Q3) migration quartiles did not change. This implied that migration began when a suitable water temperature was reached, independent of the date.  相似文献

A study was conducted in in the Dale River as a part of a stock enhancement programme. The aim was to compare growth and the incidence of precocious maturation between offspring from precocious and large maturing males, and to study genotype‐environment interactions. River and hatchery performance was compared for 5 × 2 maternal half‐sib family groups, which were stocked as 0+ juveniles or maintained in the hatchery throughout. To identify the offspring, the broodfish were characterized by DNA‐fingerprinting (eight microsatellite markers). Smolt size of 1+ hatchery‐reared smolt and fish caught in a smolt trap, and the size and incidence of precocious maturation among 1+ hatchery‐reared parr and 1+ and 2+ parr caught in the river are compared between the families.  相似文献

We examined changes on N-methyl-d-aspartate receptors (NRs) in different growth stages (early parr, parr, and early smolt) of chum salmon, Oncorhynchus keta, during parr-smolt transformation from freshwater to seawater. Expression levels of NR genes mRNA and concentration of cortisol, T3, T4, dopamine and Na+/K+-ATPase activity significantly increased at salinity change condition. Moreover, in cultured brain cells, NRs were significantly lower in all groups treated with MK-801 (an antagonist of NRs) than in the early parr stage group in the FW treatment. We confirmed that the reduction in mRNA expression levels of NRs increased from the early parr to the early smolt stage. The information reported here should be taken into account in future studies on the relationship between memory factors of natal streams and homing mechanisms in Salmonidae.  相似文献

The changes that take place in the saccus vasculosus epithelium during smoltification of Atlantic salmon (Salmo salar) are described. The major cell type of the epithelium, the coronet cells, have a number (mean = 32) of spherical protrusions connected with a non-motile cilium to the apical part of the cell. The protrusions extend into the saccus lumen. In parr the protrusions become more spherical during the spring season, while in smolt the opposite process takes place. Parr coronet cells have most of the mitochondria in the apical part of the cell, while in smolt they are concentrated basally. The relative areal fraction of heterochromatin in the nuclei increase from 23 to 29 during the smoltification process. The results are consistent with the view that the coronet cells take an active part in the smoltification process.  相似文献

Morphological differences, haematocrit value and chloride cells were examined in downstream migrating Arctic charr, Salvelinus alpinus (L.) from the Hals River, North Norway, and resident charr from Lake Storvann. Fish were classified as visual parr, silvery parr or smolt based on the degree of silvering and the Occurrence of lateral parr marks. On average, 47% of downstream migrating Arctic charr were classified as visual molts, but only 14% of the resident charr. Charr longer than 20 cm fork length were mainly classified as visual molts. Morphometrical analyses of body size and shape revealed that most of the variations could be explained in terms of variations in fork length. Length adjusted ratios of post-anal distances were significantly higher in migrating charr than in resident charr. The number of developed chloride cells, the cell nucleus diameter in the basin of secondary gill lamellae and blood haematocrit values were significantly higher among downstream migrating charr than in resident charr. However, morphological differences between anadromous and resident Arctic charr were not necessarily synchronized with the development of chloride cells.  相似文献

Using antiserum specific for the β subunit of coho salmon gonadotropic hormone II (GTH II), an immunocytochemical study of Mugil cephalus (L.) pituitaries was conducted during the annual reproductive cycle of the male in both natural habitat and captivity. The gonadotropic potency of the pituitary gland in general underwent an obvious increase during testicular development, reaching a peak at the time of reproductive maturity. During the testicular cycle of M. cephalus, the GTH cells showed an increase in immunoreactive staining intensity, granulation, hypertrophy and hyperplasia during sexual maturation. However, degranulation, vacuolization, and weakened immunoreactivity of these cells occurred during spawning. The GTH cells in the pituitary gland of M. cephalus males reared in captivity appeared with high synthetic and secretory activity but the reproductive activity declined, as reflected in the form of low values of the gonadosomatic index (GSI) and earlier resorption of the testes.  相似文献

Behavioural changes that occur during the parr–smolt transformation were investigated in juvenile coho salmon Oncorhynchus kisutch. Fish from two populations were examined from the Fraser River catchment in British Columbia, Canada; a short and a long-distance migrating population. Fish showed a significant decrease in condition factor and significant increase in gill Na+K+-ATPase activity during the spring indicating that they became competent smolts, but no difference between populations. Temperature preference trials were conducted using a shuttlebox system throughout the spring. Mean temperature preference did not differ between the two populations, but preferred temperature decreased with development from 16.5 ± 0.3°C for parr to 15.5 ± 0.4°C for smolts. Mean swimming velocity was also greater in smolts than parr, but there was no difference between the two populations. The preference for warmer water temperature observed for parr in early spring may be advantageous for stimulating smolt development. Preference for slightly cooler temperatures observed for smolts would sustain elevated seawater tolerance during the smolt window by a short time and may ensure successful transition to the marine environment.  相似文献

1. There is growing evidence that sexually mature but morphologically juvenile males of Atlantic salmon (precocious or mature male parr) actively participate in reproduction and, therefore, in the genetic composition of the populations of this species. The impact of mature male parr on the effective population size (Ne) of such populations has been previously studied under experimental settings, but no studies have been performed directly on natural populations. 2. Continuous monitoring and sampling of all sea returns is possible in the Lérez River (northwest of Spain). From demographic data on variances of reproductive success and genetic data from six microsatellite marker loci we carried out parentage assignment and assessed the impact of male parr on demographic and genetic estimates of Ne in two consecutive years. 3. Our results reveal that: (i) approximately 60% of the total sire paternity is attributable to mature parr; (ii) mature parr decrease the variance of reproductive success of males by a threefold factor and increase the effective population size of males by a 10‐fold factor; (iii) however, they do not substantially affect the variance of reproductive success and the effective size of females; (iv) mature parr increase two‐to threefold the overall effective size of the population but the ratio Ne/N, where N is the population size including or not mature parr in each case, is not affected.  相似文献

During three consequtive years, 1975–1977, Individually tagged Baltic salmon Salmo salar smolts of sexually immature male and female fish (n = 35027, mean size: 15.2 cm) and precocious males (n = 6518, mean size: 14.2 cm) were released into Umeälven (Ume river), northern Sweden. Rate of survival (% captured adults) based on 3714 recoveries was significantly higher (p < 0.01) for smolts from immature fish (10.2%) than those from smolts of early maturing males, i.e. precocious males (2.2%). corresponding to an average yield of 474 and 85 kg per KHX) smolts released, respectively. Gain in survival was on average 2.5% and 1.4% per cm increase in smolt size for immature smolts and smolts from precocious males, respectively. The poor survival among smolts of precocious males is suggested to he related to an interaction between sexual maturation and smolting linked to incompletely resorbed gonads leading to a non migratory behaviour. These non migratory males are then suggested to suffer heavily by predation in the river.
The two smolt categories had a similar growth pattern in sea. Smolts from precocious males did not mature early in sea indicating no relation to grisling, i.e. sexually maturing fish returning after first winter in sea. Adult weight of fish returning the fourth summer after release was related to smolt size (P < 0.05). Our Response Surface Model (RSA) predicted that large smolts (19.0 cm) had a higher specific growth rate over their life-span compared to small smolts (<15.0 cm), 0.86% d−1 and 0.46% d−1, respectively. Large smolts (19.0 cm) attained a size of 3.0 kg during their second winter in sea about six months earlier than small smolts (13.0 cm). The paper discusses alternative release strategies that can be employed if the ultimate goal of salmon stocking is maximizing yield.  相似文献

Summary Immunocharacteristics of the pars distalis cells of the pituitary of the male lizard A. carolinensis are determined by employing the immunoperoxidase technique with antisera to mammalian pituitary hormones. On the basis of their immunoreactivity, 5 different cell types with characteristic anatomical distribution are recognized. ACTH cells are found in the rostral half of the pars distalis, and PRL cells in the rostral two thirds of the pars distalis. GH and TSH cells are located in the caudal half of the pars distalis. GTH cells are distributed throughout the gland. When consecutive sections are stained with antiserum to ovine FSH or its -subunit and to ovine LH, the same cells show immunoreactivity to all the three antisera. None of the GTH cells show positive immunoreactivity to ovine -LH antiserum. The results suggest the existence of one gonadotropic cell type in the pituitary of this lizard.Supported by U.S. Council for International Exchange of Scholars (to D.R.N.) and PHS Grant NS09914  相似文献

A model that explains 48% of the annual variation in Atlantic salmon Salmo salar smolt production in the River Orkla, Norway, has been established. This variation could be explained by egg deposition, minimum daily discharge during the previous winter and minimum weekly discharge during the summer 3 years before smolt migration. All coefficients in the model were positive, which indicates that more eggs and higher minimum discharge levels during the winter before smolt migration and the summer after hatching benefit smolt production. Hence, when the spawning target of the river is reached, the minimum levels of river discharge, in both winter and summer, are the main bottlenecks for the parr survival, and hence for smolt production. The River Orkla was developed for hydropower production in the early 1980s by the construction of four reservoirs upstream of the river stretch accessible to S. salar. Although no water has been removed from the catchment, the dynamics of water flow has been altered, mainly by increasing discharges during winter and reducing spring floods. In spite of the higher than natural winter discharges, minimum winter discharge is still a determinant of smolt production. Hence, in regulated rivers, the maintenance of discharges to ensure that they are as high as possible during dry periods is an important means of securing high S. salar smolt production.  相似文献

Gill succinic dehydrogenase and Na+-K+ ATPase activities were stimulated by salt water transfer in parr and smolt. Both activities were preferentially located in the chloride cells. Salt water adaptation induced proliferation and enlargement of the chloride cells. Hypertrophy of the chloride cell system occurred in parr adapted to salt water.  相似文献

Summary Intact and castrated juvenile male rainbow trout (Salmo gairdneri) were treated with testosterone and gonadotropic hormone (GTH) to determine the maturational effects of these hormones on the GTH-cells. Electron-microscopic studies of the GTH-cells revealed that GTH and testosterone in intact animals, and testosterone in castrated fish, caused GTH-cell maturation: These cells now displayed the same appearance as GTH-cells in adult trout, including the presence of globules, a well-developed Golgi apparatus and rough endoplasmic reticulum, all of which were absent in GTH-cells of control animals. Animals with stimulated GTH-cells also had an increased GTH content of the pituitary; release of GTH could not be demonstrated. Animals treated with GTH exhibited an accelerated development of the testes, resulting in complete gametogenesis and elevated plasma testosterone levels. These results indicate that exogenous steroids as well as endogenous gonadal steroids can stimulate the full development of GTH-cells and accelerate GTH synthesis. The significance of this stimulating effect of the gonadal hormones with respect to the development of the brain-pituitary-gonadal axis and the onset of puberty is discussed. The results were presented as a poster at the 11th conference of the European Society of Comparative Endocrinology, Jerusalem, August 10–14, 1981  相似文献

We describe temporal changes in the genetic composition of a small anadromous Atlantic salmon (Salmo salar) population from South Newfoundland, an area where salmon populations are considered threatened (COSEWIC 2010). We examined the genetic variability (13 microsatellite loci) in 869 out‐migrating smolt and post‐spawning kelt samples, collected from 1985 to 2011 for a total of 22 annual collections and a 30 year span of assigned cohorts. We estimated the annual effective number of breeders (Nb) and the generational effective population size (Ne) through genetic methods and demographically using the adult sex ratio. Comparisons between genetic and demographic estimates show that the adult spawners inadequately explain the observed Ne estimates, suggesting that mature male parr are significantly increasing Nb and Ne over the study period. Spawning as parr appears to be a viable and important strategy in the near absence of adult males.  相似文献

Juvenile stages of rainbow trout, smaller parr and older juveniles, termed smolts, show differences in red muscle contractile properties: parr red muscle has faster kinetics and a faster maximum shortening velocity than smolt red muscle. A developmental reduction in the number of MHC isoforms as detected by SDS-PAGE between parr and smolt has also been observed. To investigate whether this shift in contractile kinetics results from differential gene expression, three different MHC cDNA fragments, one each from red, white, and ventricular muscle, were identified. The red muscle and ventricular forms are novel MHCs, and the white muscle form is identical to a published MHC from adult trout white muscle. Tissue and developmental stage-specific expression patterns of these MHC isoforms were examined using isoform-specific RT-PCR. Ventricular muscle typically showed only the ventricular form; 60% parr and 80% smolts expressed the ventricular form only. Approximately half of the white muscle samples of either parr or smolts, 58% and 50%, respectively, expressed only white muscle MHC. Red muscle samples were the most heterogeneous, with red muscle MHC found in combination with either the white or ventricular form or both. Combining samples from the anterior and posterior, 8% of parr red muscle samples expressed solely the red muscle MHC form, and 30% of smolt red muscle samples expressed the red muscle form alone. Variations in the relative contribution of each MHC to the red muscle of parr and smolt may explain observed differences in protein composition and contractile properties. J. Exp.
