Ascorbate peroxidase (APX) and glutathione peroxidase (GPX) are two families of essential peroxidases that maintain redox balance in cells by catalyzing the reduction of hydrogen peroxide. Ammopiptanthus nanus is a rare broad-leaved evergreen shrub that lives in the temperate desert areas of Central Asia and exhibits strong resistance to low temperature and water stress. GPX and APX family members might contribute to the stress response of A. nanus by participating in reactive oxygen species scavenging. In the present study, APX and GPX family members in A. nanus were identified and their structure, evolution, and expression patterns under stress conditions were investigated. A total of 8 GPX genes, 6 APX genes, and 1 APX-like gene were identified in A. nanus, and these genes were unevenly distributed on 7 chromosomes. These APXs and GPXs showed conservation in amino acid sequence, three-dimensional structure, and intron–exon structure. The GPX gene family in A. nanus expanded in gene number, and the expansions were mainly driven by segmental duplication caused by large-scale duplication events in the evolution of Tribe Sophoreae and might play important roles in the freezing and drought tolerance in A. nanus. Expression profiling based on RNA-seq datasets and qRT-PCR analysis showed that most of the APX and GPX members were differentially expressed under osmotic and cold stress, which is in line with the high copies of stress and hormone response-related cis-acting elements predicted from the promoters of the APX and GPX family genes. The study provided new insight into the evolution of APX and GPX family and promoted the understanding of the molecular mechanism underlying the stress tolerance of A. nanus.

Two new thick‐tail scorpions in the genus Parabuthus Pocock, 1890 are described from the gravel plains of the Central Namib Desert, Namibia: Parabuthus glabrimanus sp. nov. ; Parabuthus setiventer sp. nov. The two new species occupy discrete distributional ranges, allopatric with the closely related species Parabuthus gracilis Lamoral, 1979 and Parabuthus nanus Lamoral, 1979. The distributions of the four species are mapped and a key provided for their identification. Revised diagnoses are provided for P. gracilis and P. nanus. The two new species are added to a previously published morphological character matrix for Parabuthus species and their phylogenetic positions determined in a reanalysis of Parabuthus phylogeny. Parabuthus setiventer sp. nov. is found to be the sister species of P. nanus, whereas P. glabrimanus sp. nov. is sister to a monophyletic group comprising P. gracilis, P. nanus, and P. setiventer sp. nov. The discovery of two new scorpion species endemic to the Central Namib gravel plains contributes to a growing body of evidence that this barren and desolate region is a hotspot of arachnid species richness and endemism. © 2010 The Linnean Society of London, Zoological Journal of the Linnean Society, 2010, 159 , 673–710.  相似文献

The relative importance of subterranean versus aboveground insect damage to plants is not well understood. In particular, the simultaneous effects of above- and belowground herbivory, and the importance of highly variable abiotic factors such as rainfall, have received little attention in diverse natural ecosystems. We investigated the influence of both above- and belowground herbivory on Lupinus nanus (Fabaceae), an annual plant native to coastal California. A number of insect species damage L. nanus aboveground, and a weevil larva consumes nodules belowground. To manipulate herbivory in the field, we employed a combination of insecticides and simulated herbivory during two different years. In 1997, simulated belowground damage reduced L. nanus survival, and insecticide application to roots increased seed production and seed mass. By contrast, in 1998, only aboveground folivory significantly reduced L. nanus reproduction, and, in combination, above- and belowground insecticides did not affect flower or seed number relative to controls. A growth chamber experiment conducted in the absence of herbivory revealed that the aboveground insecticide marginally reduced flower production and the belowground insecticide marginally increased flower production compared to controls; these non-target effects made our field experiments for aboveground herbivory conservative. Finally, ambient levels of herbivory differed among years (1997, 1998, and 2000), which varied greatly in rainfall due to the effects of El Nino. The results suggest that the impacts of herbivores are temporally variable and that abiotic factors, particularly those related to large-scale changes in weather patterns, may be more important than insect herbivory to L. nanus in some years. An analysis was made of the R- and C-banding of chromosomes of the following Gerbillus species (Rodentia, Gerbillidae): G. poecilops (Taif, Saudi Arabia), G. henleyi (Oursi, Burkina Faso; Kairouan, Tunisia), and G. nanus (Taif and Hofuf, Saudi Arabia; Sind desert, Pakistan). Their karyotypes show the same chromosome number (2n = 52), but a different N.F.a. (number of autosomal arms), ranging from 58 to 62 in the species overall, and from 58 to 60 among G. nanus forms, due to pericentric inversions involving chromosomes 1 and 4. Moreover, large inter-individual variations of heterochromatin segments of chromosomes 25, X, and Y were found. Considering morphology and karyotype, G. poecilops and G. henleyi appear to be rather monomorphous species, whereas G. nanus produces a series of forms as a consequence of speciation, in which both chromosomal and morphological differentiations occur that do not correlate.  相似文献

The dwarf gerbil (Gerbillus nanus) is broadly distributed in Asia, with a range that encompasses altitudinally diverse terrain, including two major mountain ranges. Previous studies have shown this species to be generally varied across its geographic range, both genetically and morphologically. Physical barriers (e.g. mountains) and geographic distance (i.e. isolation by distance [IBD]) are expected to reduce dispersal rates, and consequently could lead to cranial morphological differentiation among populations. Adaptation to local environments is also expected to lead to cranial morphological differentiation among populations. Here, I test these hypotheses by examining variation in cranial shape and size across the geographic distribution of G. nanus using geometric morphometric analysis. Based on a sample of 473 specimens from throughout its distribution, G. nanus populations do not seem to show biologically meaningful variation in cranial shape. Cranial size, on the other hand, did show geographic variation—yet, this variation does not seem to show strong patterns of IBD nor adaptation to local environments, which could indicate that the geographic variation in the cranial size of G. nanus populations may be accounted for by factors unexamined in this study.  相似文献

The predictability of temporal changes was analysed in the population density of three meiobenthic copepod species, and for three parameters characterizing this community. For Paronychocamptus nanus and Tachidius discipes a large part of the variation in time scales longer than 1 year is explainable as cyclic factors. In P. nanus clear cyles with periods of 2 years and 1.5 years were found. These cyclic factors can be extrapolated for prediction. In Canuella perplexa almost all the variation was due to unpredictable long-term drift. Community parameters are generally better predicted than population densities. In our data set total density of the copepods was the best parameter to monitor. Monitoring does not necessitate a strict sampling scheme; irregular quarterly sampling from the P. nanus series showed that the essential features of the series were still discernible.  相似文献

该研究以沙冬青和矮沙冬青叶绿体基因组为研究对象,比较分析其基因组结构和系统发育关系。结果显示: (1)沙冬青和矮沙冬青的叶绿体基因组具有典型的四段式结构,全长为153 935 bp和154 140 bp,其中大单拷贝区(LSC)分别为83 891 bp和84 126 bp,小单拷贝区(SSC)分别为18 022 bp和18 014 bp,以及长度各自为26 011 bp和26 000 bp的成对反向重复区(IRs);沙冬青和矮沙冬青均注释130个基因,包括85个蛋白编码基因(PCGs),37个转运RNA(tRNA)以及8个核糖体RNA(rRNA)。(2)沙冬青和矮沙冬青的叶绿体基因组中分别检测出26和15个回文重复序列,39和50个串联重复序列,23和34个散在重复序列。同时都鉴定出96个SSRs位点,包括74和73个单核苷酸重复,5和6个二核苷酸重复,以及各有17个复合SSR位点;边界分析显示两者IR区相似,但仍有一定差异。(3)通过近邻结合法(NJ)对沙冬青和矮沙冬青在内的17种蝶形花亚科以及2种云实亚科植物的叶绿体基因组构建的系统发育树显示,沙冬青和矮沙冬青以较高的支持率聚为一个独立分枝。该研究结果为沙冬青属的种间鉴别、SSR分子标记开发、保育工作、种群动态以及进一步研究坡塔里族的演化过程奠定了理论基础。  相似文献

The physiological signal for torpor initiation appears to be related to fuel availability. Studies on metabolic fuel inhibition in placental heterotherms show that glucose deprivation via the inhibitor 2-deoxy-D-glucose (2DG) initiates a torpor-like state, whereas fatty acid deprivation via mercaptoacetate (MA) does not. As previous studies using inhibitors were limited to quantifying body temperature in placentals, we investigated whether inhibition of glucose or fatty acids for cellular oxidation induces torpor in the marsupial hibernator Cercartetus nanus, and how the response of metabolic rate is related to body temperature. Glucoprivation initiated a torpor-like state in C. nanus, but animals had much higher minimum body temperatures and metabolic rates than those of torpid food-deprived animals and arousal rates were slower. Moreover, 2DG-treated animals were thermoregulating at ambient temperatures of 20 and 12 °C, whereas food-deprived torpid animals were thermo-conforming. We suggest that glucoprivation reduces the hypothalamic body temperature set point, but only by about 8 °C rather than the approximately 28 °C during natural torpor. Reduced fatty acid availability via MA also induced a torpor-like state in some C. nanus, with physiological variables that did not differ from those of torpid food-deprived animals. We conclude that reduced glucose availability forms only part of the physiological trigger for torpor initiation in C. nanus. Synopsis A recent (1979) expedition to the Chagos Archipelago resulted in the collection of about 40 new taxa of fishes. A new genus,Trimmatom, and two new species,T. nanus andT. offucius, are described here. The new genus is characterized by having all pelvic-fin rays simple (unbranched), a scaleless body, no head pores, a wide gill opening extending anteroventrally to below the eye, and hypurals 1 and 2 fused to the complex formed by the fusion of the ural centrum and hypurals 3 and 4.T. nanuss andT. offucius are differentiated on the basis of fin ray counts and colour pattern.T. nanus is the smallest vertebrate yet to be described. The new sand goby species Pomatoschistus nanus (Teleostei: Gobiidae) is described from the northern coast of the Levantine Sea (eastern Mediterranean Sea) based on both morphological and DNA barcoding data. The new species is the smallest fish in the Mediterranean Sea and may be distinguished from congeners by the following features: predorsal area, first dorsal‐fin base and breast naked; δ‐pore missing; anterior point of the suborbital row b not reaching level of posterior point of suborbital row d; slightly emarginated caudal fin and nape coloration pattern. DNA barcode data clearly discriminate Pomatoschistus spp. in the neighbour‐joining tree with an average of 17·7% interspecific K2P distance. The most closely related taxon to P. nanus sp. nov. is Pomatoschistus bathi and the most distantly related is Pomatoschistus tortonesei with 11·9 and 21·9% K2P distances respectively. Morphometric and genetic data are also provided for Pomatoschistus bathi.  相似文献

The consequences of inbreeding for reproductive traits were investigated for two closely related annual lupines that differ in their mating system. Lupinus bicolor (Leguminosae) is a primarily selling species while Lupinus nanus outcrosses at intermediate rates. A controlled crossing program was used for each species to produce selfed and outcrossed progeny. These progeny were then grown in a greenhouse and scored for the date of first flower, flower morphology, and autofertility. Selfed progeny of L. bicolor produced significantly smaller flowers but did not differ from outcrossed progeny for the remaining traits. Selfed progeny of L. nanus produced flowers that significantly differed in shape and had fewer ovules than the flowers of outcrossed progeny. Selfed progeny of L. nanus also had significantly lower rates of autofertility in comparison to outcrossed progeny. The significant effects of inbreeding on these mating system traits may indicate the presence of directional dominance at the loci underlying these characters. The consequences of these direct effects of inbreeding on reproductive traits for plants growing in natural populations may include nonadaptive changes in the outcrossing rate between generations.  相似文献

Low temperature is one of the important environmental changes that affect plant growth. The cold resistance capabilities of evergreen plants are the result of long-term adaptation to extreme environmental conditions. To investigate the responses of Ammopiptanthus nanus, a rare stress-tolerant evergreen plant, to extreme cold stress, we analyzed the proteome expression patterns of stressed plants; this is the first study to report these patterns for A. nanus. We collected adult A. nanus leaves under two conditions of cold stress: extreme cold (−29°C) and relatively less extreme cold (−5°C). Total crude proteins were extracted from leaf blades, separated by two-dimensional gel electrophoresis, and stained with Coomassie brilliant blue. Of the 500 protein spots detected in each of the samples, eight of the spots that exhibited clear changes under the different conditions were identified by MALDI-TOF analyses. Our results suggest that cold stress-related proteins may play diverse roles in the resistance to multiple environmental stresses.  相似文献

The diet of the Omani Owl, Strix butleri, was studied for the first time based on re- cently collected pellets. A total of 22 individual prey items represented three mam- mals (all rodents), at least two undetermined gecko species and one scorpion. By fre- quency, Acomys cahirinus constituted 31.8% and lizards 27.3%, while Gerbillus nanus and G. dasyurus were the least consumed prey items (4.5% each).  相似文献

The social behavior in two small, polyandrous groups of moustached tamarins, Saguinus mystax, was studied at the Estación Biológica Quebrada Blanco in northeastern Peru. Allogrooming was the most obvious type of social interaction. Grooming relations were characterized by a strong asymmetry. In both groups, one adult male contributed about 70% of all allogrooming given (in terms of time spent grooming) and allocated his allogrooming evenly to all other group members. Grooming relations between the second adult male and other group members were less intensive. Intragroup agonistic interactions were infrequent, and most of them occurred in the context of feeding on small food resources (fruit, exudate) and during intergroup encounters. Sexual behavior was rare, but at least in one group a tendency existed for the principal groomer to be somewhat more active than the other male. Results are compared with data from other field studies on callitrichid social behavior. Although the label polyandrous correctly describes the demographic structure of many groups, it is not clear whether it is sufficient for understanding the patterning of social relations and thus the social organization of tamarins. © 1996 Wiley-Liss, Inc.  相似文献

Knowledge of the interactions between organisms within trophic groups is important for an understanding of the role of biodiversity in ecosystem functioning. We hypothesised that interactions between bacterivorous nematodes of different life history strategies would affect nematode population development, bacterial community composition and activity, resulting in increased N mineralization. A microcosm experiment was conducted using three nematode species (Bursilla monhystera, Acrobeloides nanus and Plectus parvus). All the nematode species interacted with each other, but the nature and effects of these interactions depended on the specific species combination. The interaction between B. monhystera and A. nanus was asymmetrically competitive (0,–), whereas that between B. monhystera and P. parvus, and also A. nanus and P. parvus was contramensal (+, –). The interaction that affected microcosm properties the most was the interaction between B. monhystera and P. parvus. This interaction affected the bacterial community composition, increased the bacterial biomass and increased soil N mineralization. B. monhystera and P. parvus have the most different life history strategies, whereas A. nanus has a life history strategy intermediate to those of B. monhystera and P. parvus. We suggest that the difference in life history strategies between species of the same trophic group is of importance for their communal effect on soil ecosystem processes. Our results support the idiosyncrasy hypothesis on the role of biodiversity in ecosystem functioning.  相似文献

沙冬青属(Ammopiptanthus)植物是古地中海第三纪孑遗濒危物种,包括沙冬青(Ammopiptanthus mgolicus)和矮沙冬青(Ammopiptanthus nanus),主要分布在我国西北干旱、半干旱地区,其不仅具有较高的研究价值,同时对我国西北干旱地区生态环境具有十分重要的作用。近年来由于全球气候变化及人为干扰等因素,沙冬青属植物天然分布面积骤缩,濒临灭绝。本研究利用MaxEnt模型、Bioclim模型和Domain模型对沙冬青属植物在我国末次间冰期(Last Interglacial)、末次冰盛期(Last Glacial Maximum)、当代和2050年(RCP4.5和RCP8.5)4个时期气候情景下的潜在适生区进行预测。结果表明:MaxEnt模型对沙冬青属植物潜在分布区的预测具有极高的准确度,所有模型的平均受试者工作特征曲线下面积(AUC测试值)均高于0.80。当代沙冬青最佳及高适生区占全国总面积的2.78%,主要集中在内蒙古中部、宁夏北部和甘肃北部等地;未来沙冬青最佳及高适生区在现有分布范围呈现向外扩张的趋势,主要分布在内蒙古鄂托克旗、鄂尔多斯、阿拉善左旗、宁夏吴忠和甘肃民勒县等地。当代矮沙冬青最佳及高适生区占全国总面积的2.23%,主要集中在新疆南部;未来矮沙冬青最佳及高适生区向新疆乌恰县南部、乌鲁木齐北部移动和扩大,主要分布在新疆乌恰县、乌苏市、吐鲁番市和乌鲁木齐市。未来2050年(RCP4.5和RCP8.5)两种气候情景下沙冬青和矮沙冬青的潜在分布总面积均有所增加,与当代相比变化不明显,但不同适生等级的潜在分布面积变化较大,在更高的CO2排放量(RCP8.5)情景下沙冬青和矮冬青的最佳及高适生区范围的预测结果都将减少。从气候因素角度考虑,研究表明未来气候情景下沙冬青属植物的适生区变化过程中,年均温(Bio1)、最湿月降水量(Bio13)和温度季节性变化(Bio4)是影响沙冬青属植物分布的关键因子,并为我国西北干旱半干旱地区具有重要的经济价值并将持续其生态服务功能。  相似文献

The Bolivian squirrel monkey (Saimiri boliviensis boliviensis) is a seasonal breeder. Male squirrel monkeys show distinct morphological and behavioral changes prior to and during the breeding season. A “fatting syndrome” includes increased body weight, increased levels of androgens, and in the Bolivian subspecies, an increasingly active role in the social organization of the group. In this study, the behavior of ten adult male Bolivian squirrel monkeys was analyzed over a 6-month period prior to, during, and after the breeding season. Each was housed as the only adult male in a breeding unit with six to ten adult females and one juvenile male. Employing a principle components method, 11 behavioral clusters were generated from 27 responses. Their activity clusters were identified as follows: sexual activity that showed a peak around the time of peak conceptions; excitatory activity that was initially high but decreased throughout the breeding season; and maintenance activity that did not change across the breeding season. The changing social behavior of the male squirrel monkey parallels physiological changes and is correlated with changing androgen levels.  相似文献

The invasive ant species Wasmannia auropunctata displays both ecologically dominant and non‐dominant populations within its native range. Three factors could theoretically explain the ecological dominance of some native populations of W. auropunctata: (i) its clonal reproductive system, through demographic and/or adaptive advantages; (ii) its unicolonial social organization, through lower intraspecific and efficient interspecific competition; (iii) the human disturbance of its native range, through the modification of biotic and abiotic environmental conditions. We used microsatellite markers and behavioural tests to uncover the reproductive modes and social organization of dominant and non‐dominant native populations in natural and human‐modified habitats. Microsatellite and mtDNA data indicated that dominant and non‐dominant native populations (supercolonies as determined by aggression tests) of W. auropunctata did not belong to different evolutionary units. We found that the reproductive system and the social organization are neither necessary nor sufficient to explain W. auropunctata ecological dominance. Dominance rather seems to be set off by unknown ecological factors altered by human activities, as all dominant populations were recorded in human‐modified habitats. The clonal reproductive system found in some populations of W. auropunctata may however indirectly contribute to its ecological dominance by allowing the species to expand its environmental niche, through the fixation over time of specific combinations of divergent male and female genotypes. Unicoloniality may rather promote the range expansion of already dominant populations than actually trigger ecological dominance. The W. auropunctata model illustrates the strong impact of human disturbance on species’ ecological features and the adaptive potential of clonal reproductive systems.  相似文献
