Although seed dispersal is considered to be a key process determining the spatial structure and spread of non-native plant populations, few studies have explicitly addressed the link between dispersal vector behaviour, seed distribution and seedling recruitment to gain insight into the process of exotic species invasion within a fragmented landscape context. The present study analyses the relationship between avian frugivory and spatial patterns of seed deposition and seedling recruitment for an expanding population of the invasive Prunus serotina in a hedgerow network landscape in Flanders, Belgium. We quantified fruit production, observed frugivores, and determined the spatial distribution of bird droppings and P. serotina seedlings. A relatively diverse assemblage of frugivores visited P. serotina seed trees, with Columba palumbus and Turdus merula being by far the most important dispersers. Landscape structure strongly affected dispersal vector behaviour and the spatial distribution of perching birds, droppings and seedlings. Frugivorous birds non-randomly dispersed seeds to perching sites and an association between perching birds, seed deposition and seedling recruitment was found. Results indicate that landscape structure contributes to non-random seed deposition of P. serotina by common local frugivores. Cutting the larger seed trees is proposed as the most feasible measure to slow down the invasion rate.

Summary Alarm pheromones, chemical substances produced by social insects to alert the colony to threat, are the principal means by which colony defence is co-ordinated. We present the results of a study on alarm behaviour in 5 swarming species of wasps belonging to the genus Ropalidia. These species show a remarkably efficient strategy of alarm communication, including visual display and attack synchronization. We show that pheromones released from the venom gland play an important role in alarm recruitment in species belonging to the Ropalidia flavopicta group, but not in Ropalidia sumatrae. We analysed the contents of the venom reservoirs content of four of the studied species by gas chromatography-mass spectrometry. Glands were found to contain a complex mixture of volatile compounds as well as spiroacetals of higher molecular weight. Interestingly, despite all species producing similar chemical compounds from the venom gland, these were found to elicit alarm behaviour in only those species that build nest envelopes, suggesting a link between chemical release of alarm behaviour and the evolution of nest architecture in Ropalidia wasps.Received 19 August 2003; revised 29 February 2004; accepted 10 March 2004  相似文献

Simulations of soft tissue mechanobiological behaviour are increasingly important for clinical prediction of aneurysm, tendinopathy and other disorders. Mechanical behaviour at low stretches is governed by fibril straightening, transitioning into load-bearing at recruitment stretch, resulting in a tissue stiffening effect. Previous investigations have suggested theoretical relationships between stress-stretch measurements and recruitment probability density function (PDF) but not derived these rigorously nor evaluated these experimentally. Other work has proposed image-based methods for measurement of recruitment but made use of arbitrary fibril critical straightness parameters. The aim of this work was to provide a sound theoretical basis for estimating recruitment PDF from stress-stretch measurements and to evaluate this relationship using image-based methods, clearly motivating the choice of fibril critical straightness parameter in rat tail tendon and porcine artery. Rigorous derivation showed that the recruitment PDF may be estimated from the second stretch derivative of the first Piola-Kirchoff tissue stress. Image-based fibril recruitment identified the fibril straightness parameter that maximised Pearson correlation coefficients (PCC) with estimated PDFs. Using these critical straightness parameters the new method for estimating recruitment PDF showed a PCC with image-based measures of 0.915 and 0.933 for tendons and arteries respectively. This method may be used for accurate estimation of fibril recruitment PDF in mechanobiological simulation where fibril-level mechanical parameters are important for predicting cell behaviour.

Abstract Foraging ants recruit nestmate workers to food sources by a variety of mechanisms. We report that one behavioural subcategory of the recruitment pheromone complex of Solenopsis invicta Buren involves orientation induction. The orientation inducer pheromone exerts its effects by changing the physiological state of the recipient rather than by releasing a measurable behaviour. Some ant species use a physical 'waggle' behaviour to motivate (change physiological state) nestmate workers to follow their chemical trail. The orientation inducer pheromone can be interpreted as a chemical analogue of the physical 'waggle' inducing effects. This behaviour is not elicited by the recruitment pheromone components responsible for orientation and/or attraction. Each of these behavioural categories is mediated by a different blend of chemicals from the Dufour's gland. Activity-concentration thresholds indicate that the attraction and inducer part of the recruitment pheromone require about 250 times more worker equivalents for a response than the orientation pheromone. Therefore, the recruitment sub-categories are differentially activated by the amount of Dufour's gland material released.

Temporal and spatial recruitment patterns of the cyclostome bryozoan Disporella hispida were monitored using settlement plates arranged along three benthic communities of an artificial reef at Blanes (NE Spain, NW Mediterranean). At the study site, the species mainly inhabits semi-obscure caves. By studying recruitment over one year I first inferred the larval release period for D. hispida and described its temporal occurrence in the communities and stations studied. Secondly, I attempted to determine whether the predicted restricted dispersal may account for the species' distribution at the study site. To this purpose, I compared the distribution of early recruits (15 days old) with that of adults. I also investigated environmental factors which may affect the extent of larval dispersal, and described the effects of post-recruitment processes occurring over a 4-month period. The brooding period, inferred from the study of early recruitment, was linked to spring-increments and autumn-decrements of water temperatures. Early recruits were distributed non-randomly in the communities and stations studied, being most abundant in the habitats where adults live. Strong hydrodynamic events seemed to modify this pattern, allowing recruitment out of the parental communities, and may hinder settlement. Post-recruitment mortality events were likely to prevent colonisation of habitats where the species do not live. Overall, philopatry and low post-recruitment mortality in the parental communities appeared to be the main mechanisms determining the distribution of D. hispida at the study site. Summary Three alternative hypotheses about the evolution of recruitment behaviour in ants, based on accounts in the literature, are compared by means of a cladistic analysis. The three hypotheses are the following:Hypothesis 1. Increasingly efficient recruitment behaviours exhibited by different ant species have been shaped by or are correlated with ant phylogeny.Hypothesis 2. Increasingly efficient recruitment behaviours represent necessary evolutionary steps independently followed during the evolution of different ant clades.Hypothesis 3. Differently efficient recruitment behaviours have been selected in a convergent way among different species by similar population/environmental constraints. In a first stage of the analysis, these hypotheses have been compared in terms of parsimony (i.e. in terms of tree length = TL) of alternative cladograms based on recruitment behaviour only. The analysis gave the following results: Hypothesis 1, TL = 4; Hypothesis 2, TL = 18; Hypothesis 3, TL = 11. At least in terms of parsimony, hence, Hypothesis 1 appears to be the best. This hypothesis, however, cannot be retained for its total lack of congruence with current views on ant phylogeny. Among the remaining two hypotheses, Hypothesis 3 is again much (ca. 40%) more parsimonious than Hypothesis 2, but the retention index for recruitment behaviour on the relative cladogram is 0.2 as compared with 0.7 for Hypothesis 2. Practically, this implies biologically very implausible behavioural evolution indicated by very improbable ancestors for the species included in the analysis. In the case of recruitment evolution the biological credibility of each hypothesis is inversely proportional to its parsimony. The three hypotheses on the evolution of recruitment behaviour are compared again taking into account the morphological and behavioural correlates of recruitment. The results confirm those obtained by simple cladistic analysis of behaviour alone, namely that an obligatory (i. e. neither reversible nor random) increase in recruitment efficiency has been repeatedly selected within different ant clades. Inclusion of the recruitment correlates allows, in addition, a more precise formulation of the implications of each hypothesis and a tentative test of two other alternatives deduced from the literature. Most papers dealing with recruitment assume this behaviour to be controlled by a single gland, while at least two experimental analyses show that more than one gland is likely to be involved as behavioural releaser. A cladistic approach allowed testing of the following two adaptational hypotheses: A) Synergic behavioural control by several glands, allowing shift of the dominant role from one gland to another. B) Single gland control, making improbable the replacement of one gland by another that performs the same function. The results of the analysis appear to favour alternative A slightly, though neither alternative results in implausible evolutionary paths. It is stressed that parsimony remains the sole decisional criterion when no other criteria are available but it can by no way be preferred to the slightest trace of biological common sense.

Seven healthy subjects were investigated in cyclic ramp-and-hold long lasting isometric contractions. Wire branched electrodes were used for selective recording of single motor unit (MU) potentials from m. biceps brachii. MU behaviour was defined in terms of recruitment/derecruitment thresholds (RT and DT) and the duration of interspike intervals (ISI). A total of 63 MUs was investigated: 40 units were active from the beginning of the task performance and another 23 were recruited later. There were no changes in the recruitment pattern of MUs with fatigue development - a short first ISI followed by a very long second one and an almost constant firing rate after this transient phase. The tendency of RT to gradually decrease dominates the results. Thus, the required constant rate of force increase with fatigue development was maintained mostly by the mechanisms of space coding (i.e., decrease of RT and recruitment of additional MUs). Oppositely, the time behaviour of the DT changes was not uniform and rate coding was an essential mechanism in the adaptation of MU activity to muscle fatigue during relaxation phases. The recruitment pattern and fatigue related behaviour of the additionally recruited MUs were similar to those of MUs active from the first cycle of the motor task performance.

The anomalous presence of numerous blue shark Prionace glauca neonates and juveniles in shallow inshore waters of Galicia, north‐west Spain, during the summers of 2014 and 2015 is reported. Changes in oceanographic conditions, high recruitment events or changes in the pupping area are discussed as possible causes of this unusual behaviour.

The New World honey ant species Myrmecocystus mimicus is well known for its highly stereotyped territorial tournaments, and for the raids on conspecific nests that can lead to intraspecific slavery. Our results from mitochondrial and nuclear markers show that the raided brood emerges in the raiding colony and is subsequently incorporated into the colony's worker force. We also found enslaved conspecifics in a second honey ant species, M. depilis, the sister taxon of M. mimicus, which occurs in sympatry with M. mimicus at the study site. Colonies of this species furthermore contained raided M. mimicus workers. Both species have an effective mating frequency that is not significantly different from 1. This study provides genetic evidence for facultative intra- and interspecific slavery in the genus Myrmecocystus. Slavery in ants has evolved repeatedly and supposedly by different means. We propose that, in honey ants, secondary contact between two closely related species that both exhibit intraspecific slavery gave rise to an early form of facultative interspecific slavery.

Carabid beetles are common predators of pest insects and weed seeds in agricultural systems. Understanding their dispersal across farmland is important for designing farms and landscapes that support pest and weed biological control. Little is known, however, about the effect of farmland habitat discontinuities on dispersal behaviour and the resulting redistribution of these beetles. We released 1,985 well‐fed and 1,680 food‐deprived individuals of the predatory carabid beetle Pterostichus melanarius (Illiger) (Coleoptera: Carabidae) on a farm in Wageningen, The Netherlands. We recaptured 23.6% of those beetles over a period of 23 days in 2010. The farmland comprised agricultural fields with various crop species and tillage, separated by strips of perennial vegetation. We developed discrete Fokker‐Planck diffusion models to describe dispersal based on motility (m2 day?1) and preferential behaviour at habitat interfaces. We used model selection and Akaike’s information criterion to determine whether movement patterns were driven by variation in motility between habitats, preferential behaviour at habitat interfaces, or both. Model selection revealed differences in motility among habitats and gave strong support for preferential behaviour at habitat interfaces. Behaviour at interfaces between crop and perennial vegetation was asymmetric, with beetles preferentially moving towards the crop. Furthermore, beetles had lower motility in perennial strips than in arable fields. Also between arable habitats movement was asymmetric, with beetles preferentially moving towards the habitat in which motility was lowest. Neither crop type nor tillage explained differences in motility between crop habitats. Recapture data representing dispersal patterns of beetles were best described by a model that accounted for differences in motility between farmland habitats and preferential behaviour at habitat interfaces. Motility in farmland and behaviour at interfaces can also be estimated for other organisms and farmland habitats to support design of farmland conducive to natural pest suppression. Landscape design for early recruitment of carabids into arable fields should take into account the quantity and quality of resource habitats in the landscape, their proximity to crop fields, movement rates, and the possibility of movement responses at interfaces between landscape elements.

Summary: We report in this study that the tree-dwelling African ant Polyrhachis laboriosa (Formicinae) uses different foraging strategies according to the size of the available food sources. We demonstrate that a recruitment behaviour can be induced with a 125 7l alimentary reward and that foraging remains solitary when rewards are smaller. Small rewards do not elicit trail-laying behaviour, and exploration behaviour is considerable. With large permanent food sources, scouts use group recruitment and there is less exploration around the reward. The choice of the foraging strategy is determined by the first forager, which modifies its behaviour according to the volume of the food supply. Independently of the size of the reward, the forager shows many exploratory displays during the first visit to the source, and contrary to most ants, it never lays a trail during its first return to the nest. Visual cues remain mainly used for individual orientation; information collected during the first trips are then transmitted to nestmates thanks to temporary trail laying behaviour.

The ecological success of ants is founded on cooperative behaviour and a well functioning communication. Particularly invasive ants are able to act highly cooperatively, out-compete other species, and become ecologically dominant. Since ant communication is to a large extent chemical, we investigated the pheromone functions involved in foraging and alarm behaviour of the invasive tropical formicine Anoplolepis gracilipes. Our results suggest that long-lasting orientation cues are located in hindguts, while Dufour glands contain short-term attractants that trigger an effective recruitment. Poison gland effects were intermediate between hindgut and Dufour gland in terms of orientation, attraction and longevity. In contrast to the other pheromone sources, mandibular glands have a repellent effect and are most likely involved in alarm behaviour. Taken together, the pheromone glands of A. gracilipes contain functionally distinct signals with considerable differences in persistence. In this respect, its communication is exceptional in formicine ants. A strikingly similar communication system was previously detected in Paratrechina longicornis, another opportunistic and invasive formicine ant. Based on these similarities and the differences compared to non-invasive formicine ants, we discuss the role of chemical signals for the coordination of efficient foraging. We conclude that a sophisticated communication system can contribute significantly to ecological dominance and invasive success, in concert with other well known traits.

Structures influence how individuals interact and, therefore, shape the collective behaviours that emerge from these interactions. Here I show that the structure of a nest influences the collective behaviour of harvester ant colonies. Using network analysis, I quantify nest architecture and find that as chamber connectivity and redundancy of connections among chambers increase, so does a colony''s speed of recruitment to food. Interestingly, the volume of the chambers did not influence speed of recruitment, suggesting that the spatial organization of a nest has a greater impact on collective behaviour than the number of workers it can hold. Thus, by changing spatial constraints on social interactions organisms can modify their behaviour and impact their fitness.

Honeydew is the keystone on which ant–aphid mutualism is built. The present study investigates how each sugar identified in Aphis fabae Scopoli honeydew acts upon the feeding and the laying of a recruitment trail by scouts of the aphid‐tending ant Lasius niger Linnaeus, and thus may enhance collective exploitation by the ant mutualists. The feeding preferences shown by L. niger for honeydew sugars are: melezitose = sucrose = raffinose > glucose = fructose > maltose = trehalose = melibiose = xylose. Although feeding is a prerequisite to the launching of trail recruitment, the reverse is not necessarily true: not all ingested sugar solutions elicit a trail‐laying behaviour among fed scouts. Trail mark laying is only triggered by raffinose, sucrose or melezitose, with the latter sugar being specific to honeydew. By comparing gustatory and recruitment responses of ant foragers to sugar food sources, the present study clarifies the role of honeydew composition both as a source of energy and as a mediator in ant–aphid interactions. Lasius niger feeding preferences can be related to the physiological suitability of each sugar (i.e. their detection by gustatory receptors as well as their ability to be digested and converted into energy). Regarding recruitment, the aphid‐synthesized oligosaccharide (melezitose) could be used by ant scouts as a cue indicative of a long‐lasting productive resource that is worthy of collective exploitation and defence against competitors or aphid predators.

Novel applications in rehabilitation, surgery and tissue engineering require the knowledge of the mechanical behaviour of the tissues at microstructural level. The aim of this work is to investigate the viscoelastic properties of the tendon from the interaction of its biological constituents in the fibrillar network. Traction, relaxation and creep in-vitro tests have been performed on porcine flexor digital tendons. A viscoelastic constitutive equation at finite deformation is presented. The fibrillar deformation modes are described through a network of adaptive links between collagen type I and decorin. The theoretical predictions fit accurately the experimental data. The results of the model demonstrate the mechanical importance of glycosaminoglycan chains of decorin for the differential recruitment and the activation of fibrillar collagen.

Abstract. When exploring a chemically unmarked area devoid of food sources, workers of the pest ant Monomorium pharaonis L. (Formicidae, Myrmicinae) leave scent marks on the ground and after 30–60min a network of diverging exploratory trails begins to emerge.
Exploratory activity is affected by the nutritional state of the colony and a period of food deprivation induces a dramatic increase in the number of workers leaving the nest. A mathematical model based on a logistic growth equation is proposed to describe the exploratory recruitment observed. When travelling along exploratory trails the proportion of ants displaying trail-laying behaviour is higher for outbound than for nestbound workers. Outbound ants also show a greater propensity than nestbound ants to follow the scent marks of their nestmates. The chemical used to mark a novel area does not appear to be colony-specific and thus does not have a territorial function sensu stricto. The adaptive value of the collective exploratory behaviour observed in this study is discussed in relation to the common features of other pest ant species described in the literature.

The successful rearing of the army ant Neivamyrmex nigrescens in the laboratory has enabled us to demonstrate that the pheromone trail deposited by recruiting workers is qualitatively different from the ants' exploratory trail. The recruitment trail alone can initiate as strong a mass recruitment response as can a recruiting worker that physically interacts with nestmates. The rapidity with which workers are aroused is due to secondary recruitment. Army ants are able to assemble a critical striking force before food is located, as a result of mass recruitment to new terrain. In addition to feeding behaviour, mass recruitment occurs when army ants emigrate to new nests. In both behavioural contexts, primary and secondary recruiters run more rapidly than exploring ants, and with exaggerated vertical motor patterns.

Tandem running is a common recruitment strategy in ant species with small colony sizes. During a tandem run, an informed leader guides a usually naïve nestmate to a food source or a nest site. Some species perform tandem runs only during house hunting, suggesting that tandem running does not always improve foraging success in species known to use tandem running as a recruitment strategy, but more natural history information on tandem running under natural conditions is needed to better understand the adaptive significance of tandem recruitment in foraging. Studying wild colonies in Brazil, we for the first time describe tandem running in the ponerine ant Pachycondyla harpax (Fabricius). We asked if foragers perform tandem runs to carbohydrate- (honey) and protein-rich (cheese) food items. Furthermore, we tested whether the speed and success rate of tandem runs depend on the foraging distance. Foragers performed tandem runs to both carbohydrate food sources and protein-rich food items that exceed a certain size. The probability to perform a tandem run and the travelling speed increase with increasing foraging distances, which could help colonies monopolize more distant food sources in a competitive environment. Guiding a recruit to a food source is costly for leaders as ants are ~66% faster when travelling alone. If tandem runs break up (~23% of all tandem runs), followers do not usually discover the food source on their own but return to the nest. Our results show that tandem running to food sources is common in P. harpax, but that foragers modify their behaviour according to the type of food and its distance from the nest. Competition with other ants was intense and we discuss how tandem running in P. harpax might help colonies to build-up a critical number of ants at large food items that can then defend the food source against competitors.

The foraging and nest emigration abilities of the obligatory slave-making ants, Harpagoxenus canadensis, H. sublaevis and H. americanus, were examined in laboratory experiments involving both natural and slave-deprived colonies. The slave-makers contributed relatively little to these domestic tasks when slaves were present, but their apparent abilities expanded to varying degrees in the absence of slaves. H. canadensis appeared to be the most self-sufficient of the three species and displayed a surprisingly full repertoire of foraging and emigration behaviour, including the ability to recruit nestmates by ‘tandem running’ in both contexts. The relative degree of domestic degeneration in these species was correlated with the extent of their behavioural specialization for conducting slave-raids. These results reinforce current views regarding the evolution of slavery among leptothoracine ants.
