Several species of neotropical ants direct their aerial descent toward tree trunks during a fall from the forest canopy. The primary goal of this study was to determine if afrotropical arboreal ants exhibit similar gliding behavior. Ants were collected from nine tree crowns in late secondary forest at a hydrocarbon extraction site near Gamba, Gabon. Of the 32 species tested, the behavior was observed in five Cataulacus spp. and three Camponotus spp., making this the first report of gliding in African ants. Aerial glide performance (horizontal distance traveled per unit vertical drop distance) decreased with increasing body size among species and among individuals of Cataulacus erinaceus. Characteristics of directed descent behavior in C. erinaceous were very similar to those of the neotropical ant Cephalotes atratus. 相似文献

Different aspects of the foraging strategies of two harvester ant species, Messor wasmanni and M. minor, were investigated in a Mediterranean dry grassland area. Baits were used to evaluate the existence of a trade-off between resource discovery and domination as well as the effect of three variables (air temperature, relative humidity and distance) on the trade-off. Baits were also utilized to explore random vs non random use of time by colonies. Random vs non random utilization of space was instead evaluated by mapping the daily foraging area of colonies in a grid of 900 plots of 1 m2 each. Results revealed that species coexistence is not preferentially supported by a trade-off in resource utilization with no overall effect of the examined variables. The foraging activity of the two species widely overlapped whilst a clear competition for space occurred. The observed space partitioning could represent an advantageous strategy for the coexistence of the two ant species. 相似文献

We studied the effect of nestmate separation on trophallaxis in the polydomous ant Cataglyphis iberica. After dividing three colonies into two equivalent subgroups, one queenright and one queenless, we quantified the frequency of trophallaxis within each subgroup, between the workers from the two subgroups (mixed trophallaxis), and trophallaxis involving the queen. Observations of trophallaxis were conducted over four periods of time: for 2 weeks before the separation of the two subgroups, 8 weeks during separation, immediately after reunification, and 3 weeks following reunification. Subgroups were identically fed on the eve of each day of observation. Group separation induced an increase in mixed frequencies of trophallaxis just after reunification, after which trophallaxis returned to the initial level observed before separation. Previous results showed that group separation in C. iberica induces hydrocarbon profile divergence and that reunification restores this chemical modification. The current results seem to indicate that increased trophallaxis permits a uniform odor to be reestablished among previously separated ants. Trophallaxis involving the queen is infrequent and does not seem to be crucial in the process of odor exchange. Our data confirm that trophallaxis plays a key role in establishing the Gestalt colony odor, particularly among naturally separated satellite nests in a polydomous species like C. iberica. 相似文献

Mature spermatozoa from spermathecae of founding queens were obtained from 5 species of ants, representing the major subfamilies Myrmicinae (Acromyrmex versicolor, Crematogaster sp.) and Dolichoderinae (Tapinoma sessile, Conomyrma insana, Conomyrma wheeleri). The ultrastructure of ant spermatozoa has many features in common with that of higher insects and is similar to that of other Hymenoptera. Structural similarities to spermatozoa of other Hymenoptera include an acrosome containing an internal rod that extends into the nucleus, two elongate mitochondrial derivatives, a centriolar adjunct, and an axonemal arrangement of 9 + 9 + 2 that includes well-developed coarse, or accessory, tubules. Spermatozoa obtained from A. versicolor, a species that is known to store and utilize viable sperm from this supply for over 10 years, show greater development of the mitochondrial derivatives than do the other species. The most distinctive feature of ant spermatozoa in comparison to other Hymenoptera is the large size of the centriolar adjunct relative to the other organelles. The centriolar adjunct is located posterior to the nucleus, anterior to the mitochondrial derivatives, and opposite the axoneme. 相似文献

The tribe Formicini (Formicinae) from the Late Eocene Baltic, Bitterfeld, Rovno, and Scandinavian ambers is revised. Ants are recorded for the first time from the Bitterfeld and Scandinavian ambers. Two new genera (Cataglyphoides gen. nov. and Conoformica gen. nov.) and six new species (Cataglyphoides intermedius sp. nov., Conoformica bitterfeldiana sp. nov., Formica kutscheri sp. nov., F. palaeopolonica sp. nov., F. radchenkoi sp. nov., F. zherikhini sp. nov.) are described. A new combination, Cataglyphoides constrictus (Mayr, 1868), comb. nov., is established. A lectotype of Camponotus constrictus Mayr, 1868 and a neotype of Formica phaethusa Wheeler, 1915 are designated. Formica clymene Wheeler, 1915 is recognized as a new synonym of F. phaethusa Wheeler, 1915. An identification key for workers of Formicini species from Late Eocene European ambers is provided. 相似文献

The metapleural gland is an organ exclusive to ants. Its main role is to produce secretions that inhibit the proliferation of different types of pathogens. The aim of the present study was to examine the morphophysiological differences between the metapleural gland of 3 non-fungus-growing ants of the tribes Ectatommini, Myrmicini, and Blepharidattini and that of 5 fungus-growing ants from 2 basal and 3 derived attine genera. The metapleural gland of the non-fungus-growing ants and the basal attine ants has fewer secretory cells than that of the derived attine ants (leaf-cutting ants). In addition, the metapleural gland of the latter had more clusters of secretory cells and sieve plates, indicating a greater storage capacity and demand for secretion in these more advanced farming ants. The glands of the derived attine ants also produced higher levels of polysaccharides and acidic lipids than those of Myrmicini, Blepharidattini, and basal attines. Our results confirm morphophysiological differences between the metapleural glands of the derived attines and those of the basal attines and non-fungus-growing ants, suggesting that the metapleural glands of the derived attines (leaf-cutting ants) are more developed in morphology and physiology, with enhanced secretion production (acidic lipids and protein) to protect against the proliferation of unwanted fungi and bacteria in the fungal garden, it is possible that leaf-cutting ants may have evolved more developed metapleural glands in response to stronger pressure from parasites. 相似文献

Despite their importance for the evolution of the symbiosis between Attine ants and their fungal cultivar, substrate preparation behaviors have been the focus of few studies. This study aimed to comparatively examining these behaviors in Acromyrmex disciger, Apterostigma pilosum, Mycetarotes parallelus, Myrmicocrypta sp., Trachymyrmex fuscus and Trachymyrmex sp. Nov. to describe the patterns of their evolution. Behavioral observations were carried out with a set of micro cameras and the behavioral frequencies were analyzed by principal components. Our findings revealed that the process can be divided into three parts: physical treatment, chemical treatment, and incorporation. Two behavioral patterns were revealed. The first is exhibited by basal species (Myrmicocrypta sp, A. pilosum and M. parallelus) and is characterized by the absence or low frequency of chemical treatment behaviors, while the second pattern is exhibited by derived species (Trachymyrmex sp. Nov., T. fuscus and A. disciger) and is characterized by great fragmentation of the substrate and deposit of fecal fluid. This suggests that the evolution of the process is marked by an increase in the importance of the chemical treatment, leading to the adaptations observed in leaf-cutting ants. 相似文献

The European slave-making ant, Harpagoxenus sublaevis, has up to three host species which occasionally are found all together in one colony. Colonies with only Leptothorax acervorum slaves, or with both L. acervorum and L. muscorum, are frequent, whereas colonies with only L. muscorum slaves are rare, although young H. sublaevis queens found their colonies about equally frequently with either of the two main host species. We demonstrate here, that the two host species exhibit an asymmetric acceptance behavior towards each other's pupae: L. muscorum workers accept L. acervorum pupae, both in non-enslaved colonies and as slaves in H. sublaevis nests, whereas L. acervorum never accepted L. muscorum pupae. Origin and meaning of this behavioral difference are unknown. The findings, however, might be very important with respect to host specificity and host-parasite interactions also in other slave-making ants. 相似文献

The internal phylogeny of ants (Hymenoptera: Formicidae) 总被引:5,自引:0,他引:5
Abstract. The higher phylogeny of the Formicidae was analysed using 68 characters and 19 taxa: the 14 currently recognized ant subfamilies plus 5 potentially critical infrasubfamilial taxa. The results justified the recognition of 3 additional subfamilies: Aenictogitoninae Ashmead (new status), Apomyrminae Dlussky & Fedoseeva (new status), and Leptanilloidinae Bolton (new subfamily). A second analysis on these better delimited 17 subfamilies resulted in 24 equally most parsimonious trees. All trees showed a basal division of extant Formicidae into two groups, the first containing (Myrmicinae, Pseudomyrmecinae, Nothomyrmeciinae, Myrmeciinae, Formicinae, Dolichoderinae, Aneuretinae) and the second the remaining subfamilies. Clades appearing within these groups included the Cerapachyinae plus 'army ants', the Nothomyrmeciinae plus Myrmeciinae, the 'formicoid' subfamilies (Aneuretinae + Dolichoderinae + Formicinae), and the Old World army ants (Aenictinae + Aenictogitoninae + Doryline), but relationships within the last two groups were not resolved, and the relative positions of the Apomyrminae, Leptanillinae and Ponerinae remained ambiguous. Moreover, a bootstrap analysis produced a consensus tree in which all branches were represented in proportions much lower than 95%. A reconstruction of the ground plan of the Formicidae indicated that the most specialized of all recent ants are the members of the subfamily Dorylinae and the least specialized ones are the monotypic Apomyrminae. 相似文献

Studies of seasonal dynamics of the activity of ants were carried out in July–August of 2013–2015 in broadleaf forests (Kyiv, Ukraine. Transects were located within foraging areas of three dominant species Formica rufa L., Lasius fuliginosus (Latreille), and L. emarginatus (Olivier). Thirteen species of ants were encountered on the soil surface. Factors that influence the activity of ants in forests may be ranked by importance as follows. (1) Climatic factors: (a) air temperature and soil humidity; (b) mean monthly rainfall; (c) air humidity. (2) Phytogenic factor (tree species composition). 3. Interspecific hierarchy of ants (primarily, territoriality of the dominant species). 相似文献
