Spermatogenesis and the sperm structure of the terebrantian Aeolothrips intermedius Bagnall are described. Spermatogenesis consists of two mitotic divisions; the second is characterized by the loss of half of the spermatids, which have pyknotic nuclei. Early spermatids have two centrioles, but when spermiogenesis starts, a third centriole is produced. The three basal bodies give rise to three flagella; later these fuse into a single flagellum which contains three 9 + 0 axonemes. The basal bodies are surrounded by a large amount of centriole adjunct material. During spermiogenesis this material contributes to the shifting of the three axonemes towards the anterior sperm region parallel to the elongating nucleus, and it is transformed into a dense cylinder. In the mature spermatids the three axonemes amalgamate to create a bundle of 27 doublet microtubules. Near the end of spermiogenesis the dense cylinder of the centriole adjunct lies parallel to the nucleus and the axonemes. It ends where the mitochondrion appears at half-sperm length. We confirm that Terebrantia testes have a single sperm cyst; their sperm are characterized by a cylindrical nucleus, three axonemes fused into one, a small mitochondrion and a short cylindrical centriole adjunct which corresponds to the dense body described in a previous work. The acrosome is lacking. At the midpoint of the anterior half of the sperm the outline of the cross-section is bilobed, with the nucleus contained in a pocket evagination of the plasma membrane. These characters are discussed in light of a comparison between Tubulifera and Terebrantia.  相似文献

Spermatozoa from several members of the closely related Mycetophilidae and Keroplatidae were examined by electron microscopy using a fixative that contains glutaraldehyde and tannic acid, followed by a post-fixative that consists of uranyl acetate rather than osmium tetroxide. With this fixative, the detailed architecture of the flagellar axoneme and its various microtubules could be resolved. The so-called accessory tubules, which surround the central 9+2 unit of the sperm axoneme, were found to have 16 protofilaments in several examined Mycetophiloidea, but in no other Diptera. As 16 is the common number in holometabolic insects, it is presumably the plesiomorphic condition in Diptera. Other fungus gnats have accessory tubules with 15 or 14 protofilaments. The intertubular material situated between the accessory tubules is smaller in the examined members of the Mycetophilidae than in the Keroplatidae. The acrosome consists of an apical vesicle, which in one species, Macrorhyncha ancae, has three microtubular doublets in its anterior part and two large and three small extensions which extend posteriorly along the sperm axoneme.  相似文献

In the hemipteroid insects of the suborder Sternorrhyncha, B chromosomes are relatively common in comparison with other suborders of Hemiptera. However, the occurrence of supernumerary chromosomes is restricted, in most cases, to several genera or closely related species. At least in some species of Psylloidea with the XY sex determination system, a mitotically stable B chromosome integrated into an achiasmatic segregation system with the X, and became fixed as a Y chromosome. In some Aphidoidea with a multiple X system of sex determination, B chromosomes appear to be in fact non-functional X chromosomes. Supernumerary chromosomes thus probably play an important role in the evolution of sex determination systems in Sternorrhyncha.  相似文献

The pretarsal arolium serves as an attachment device in many groups of insects, enabling them to walk efficiently on smooth surfaces, where claws alone do not provide sufficient foothold. The arolia of representatives of all major lineages of Auchenorrhyncha are described and illustrated, mainly using scanning electron microscopy and histology. Glands inside the lumen of the arolia are described for the first time in this group. It is shown that the morphology of arolia within Auchenorrhyncha differs considerably. Some of them are even distinctly bilobed. The cuticle of the contact zone is thickened and formed of branching chitinous rods. In some cases, two layers of rods oriented in different directions were found. An extended definition of “arolium” is proposed. J. The sperm structure of some dipteran flies belonging to the Lestremiini tribe have been examined. Anaretella cincta was shown to have an axoneme made of 20-21 microtubular doublets, disposed in a circle in a cross section and surrounding a mitochondrion. Other crystal-containing mitochondria flank the axoneme; a second species (Anaretella sp.) was provided with 21-22 axonemal doublets. Lestremia is characterized by a flattened axoneme, consisting of about 150 doublets arranged in 2 antiparallel rows and surrounding a few mitochondria. These mitochondria, in Lestremia sp., have a crystalline core that is missing in Lestremia cinerea. The structure of microtubular doublets is quite similar in the 2 related genera and a derivation of the flattened axoneme found in Lestremia from that circular of Anaretella is suggested. Sperm structure suggests that Lestremia cinerea is not a uniform species.  相似文献

The phylogenetic placement of the moss bugs (Insecta: Hemiptera: Coleorrhyncha) has been highly controversial. Many apparent morphological apomorphies support the close relationship between Coleorrhyncha and Heteroptera (=true bugs). However, a recent phylogenomic study strongly supported a sister group relationship between Coleorrhyncha and Auchenorrhyncha (planthoppers, leafhoppers, treehoppers, spittlebugs, and cicadas). To test these two alternative hypotheses, we examined the fore‐ and hindwing base structure of the only known extant macropterous species of Coleorrhyncha using binocular and confocal laser scanning microscopes and analyzed the data selected from the wing base phylogenetically. When full morphological data including the wing base characters were analyzed, the sister group relationship between Coleorrhyncha + Heteroptera was supported, agreeing with previous consensus based on morphology. In contrast, when only wing base characters were analyzed separately, the clade Coleorrhyncha + Auchenorrhyncha was recovered, in agreement with the result from the phylogenomic study. The membranous condition of the proximal median plate in the forewing was identified as a potential synapomorphy of the latter grouping, and the absence of the tegula was excluded as a potential synapomorphy of Coleorrhyncha and Heteroptera.  相似文献

The sperm structure of two species of Embioptera, Embia savignyi Westwood 1837 and Aposthonia japonica (Okajima 1926), was studied. Spermatozoa of both species exhibit a monolayered acrosome and a layer of material surrounding the sperm cells for most of their length. The presence of a 9+9+2 axoneme provided with accessory microtubules with 16 protofilaments, two accessory bodies and two crystallized mitochondrial derivatives are characters shared with other polyneopteran taxa. The supposed close relationship between Embioptera and Phasmatodea is not supported by characters of the sperm ultrastructure.  相似文献

The ultrastructure of spermatogenesis and spermatozoa was studied in Timema poppensis Vickery & Sandoval, 1999, a putative basal taxon of Phasmatodea. The apical portion of testis follicles consists of spermatogonial cells with polymorphic nuclei. Primary spermatocytes display very short primary cilia originating from the peripheral centrosomes. Early spermatids develop a conspicuous “nebenkern” consisting of fused mitochondria. They have a single peripheral centriole with microtubular triplets, which expresses a 3.6-μm-long cilium featuring a 9?+?2 axonemal pattern. In a later stage, the centriole and the ciliary shaft displace toward the inner part of the cytoplasm by an infolding of the plasma membrane. Mature spermatids exhibit a derived centriole with microtubule doublets devoid of dynein arms, which is equipped with a dense arc-like outer structure. Ciliary degeneration was not observed during spermiogenesis. Spermatozoa are short flagellate cells about 55–60?μm in length. They are characterized by a three-layered acrosomal complex. The distinctive bell-shaped morphology of the acrosome vesicle is likely an autapomorphic trait of Timema. The flagellum has a 9?+?9?+?2 axoneme, two accessory bodies, two flattened cisterns, and two elongated mitochondrial derivatives. Results support the hypothesis that Phasmatodea, comprising Timema?+?Euphasmatodea, form a monophyletic group. The presence of 17 protofilaments in the wall of accessory microtubules and the flattened configuration of the flagellum are potential apomorphic groundplan features of the order. Within Phasmatodea, a key evolutionary divergence was from the conventional insect spermiogenesis and sperm structure of Timema, to the unusual spermiogenetic process and peculiar sperm structure of Euphasmatodea. As a result, Timema retains more sperm character states found in the polyneopteran ground pattern, while Euphasmatodea have evolved outstanding sperm autapomorphies, like the loss of mitochondria and flattened cisterns, and the presence of strongly expanded accessory bodies.  相似文献

Symbiotic microorganisms associated with thirteen species of the subfamily Deltocephalinae were examined using microscopic and molecular techniques. Athysanus argentarius, Euscelis incisus, Doratura stylata, Arthaldeus pascuellus, Errastunus ocellaris, Jassargus flori, Jassargus pseudocellaris, Psammotettix alienus, Psammotettix confinis, Turrutus socialis and Verdanus abdominalis harbor two types of ancient bacteriome-associated microorganisms: bacteria Sulcia (phylum Bacteroidetes) and bacteria Nasuia (phylum Proteobacteria, class Betaproteobacteria). In Balclutha calamagrostis and Balclutha punctata, the bacterium Nasuia has not been detected. In the bacteriomes of both species of Balclutha examined, only bacteria Sulcia occur, whereas Sodalis-like symbionts (phylum Proteobacteria, class Gammaproteobacteria) are localized in the fat body cells, in close vicinity of the bacteriomes. To our knowledge, this is the first report of the co-existence in Deltocephalinae leafhoppers of the ancient symbiont Sulcia and the more recently acquired Sodalis-like bacterium. The obtained results provide further evidence indicating that Deltocephalinae leafhoppers are characterized by a large diversity of symbiotic systems, which results from symbiont acquisition and replacement. The obtained results are additionally discussed in phylogenetic context.  相似文献

Ovary structure and transovarial transmission of endosymbiotic microorganisms in Marchalina hellenica (Insecta, Hemiptera, Coccomorpha: Marchalinidae). —Acta Zoologica (Stockholm) 00 :1–9. The paired ovaries of Marchalina hellenica are composed of about 200 ovarioles of telotrophic type. In each ovariole, a trophic chamber, vitellarium and ovariolar stalk can be distinguished. The tropharia comprise trophocytes and early previtellogenic oocytes (termed arrested oocytes) or trophocytes only. The arrested oocytes are not capable of further development. In the vitellaria, single oocytes develop that are connected to the tropharium by means of broad nutritive cords. The number of germ cells (trophocytes and oocytes) constituting ovarioles is not constant and may range between 25 and 32. Numerous endosymbiotic bacteria occur in the cytoplasm of trophocytes. The endosymbionts are transported via nutritive cords to the developing oocyte. The obtained results are discussed in a phylogenetic context.  相似文献

The planthopper superfamily Fulgoroidea (Insecta: Hemiptera) comprises approximately 20 described insect families, depending on which classification is followed. Multiple competing hypotheses of fulgoroid phylogeny have been published, based on either morphological character coding or DNA sequence data; however, those hypotheses disagree in several key aspects regarding the evolution of planthoppers. The current paper seeks to test these hypotheses, including the Asche (Asche, M. 1987. Preliminary thoughts on the phylogeny of Fulgoromorpha (Homoptera Auchenorrhyncha). In: Proceedings of the 6th Auchenorrhyncha Meeting, Turin, Italy, 7-11 September, 1987, pp. 47-53.) hypothesis of a trend in ovipositor structure, which may be correlated with planthopper feeding ecology. Presented here are phylogenetic reconstructions of Fulgoroidea based on analysis of DNA nucleotide sequence data from four loci (18S rDNA, 28S rDNA, Histone 3, and Wingless) sequenced from 83 exemplar taxa representing 18 planthopper families and outgroups. Data sets were analyzed separately and in various combinations under the maximum parsimony criterion, and the total combined dataset was analyzed via both maximum parsimony and partitioned Bayesian criteria; results of the combined analyses were concordant across reconstruction paradigms. Relationships recovered suggest several major planthopper lineages, including: (1) Delphacidae+Cixiidae; (2) Kinnaridae+Meenoplidae; (3) Fulgoridae+Dictyopharidae; (4) Lophopidae+Eurybrachidae (possibly+Flatidae); (5) Ricaniidae+Caliscelidae (possibly+Tropiduchidae). Results also suggest the placement of Achilixiidae outside of Cixiidae and of Tettigometridae as one of the more recently diversified lineages within Fulgoroidea. The resulting phylogeny supports Asche's (1987) hypothesis of a functional trend in ovipositor structure across families.  相似文献

The sperm tail of bug insects has 9 + 9 + 2 flagellar axonemes and two mitochondrial derivatives showing two to three crystalline inclusions in their matrix. During spermiogenesis, the axoneme is surrounded by a membrane cistern which, at sperm maturity, reduces to two short cisterns on the opposite sides of the axoneme adhering to the mitochondrial derivatives. Filamentous bridges connect the intertubular material of the axoneme to these cisterns. Such bridges, which represent a peculiar feature of bug insects, are resistant to detergent treatment, whereas part of the intertubular material and the inner content of microtubular doublets are affected by the treatment. After freeze‐fracture replicas, at the insertion of the bridges to the cisternal membrane, the P‐face of this membrane shows a characteristic ribbon consisting of four rows of 11 ± 1 nm staggered intramembrane particles, 13 ± 2 nm apart along each row. Sperm ultrastructure of several species in each of the two suborders of Thysanoptera Tubulifera and Terebrantia shows a distinctive and unusual architecture. Members of the whole order share a bizarre axoneme consisting of 27 microtubular elements derived from the amalgamation of 3 (9+0) axonemes present in each spermatid at the beginning of spermiogenesis. The reciprocal shifting of these axonemes along the length of the sperm, together with their possible shortening and overlapping for short distances, could explain why in some species it is never possible to observe the complete set of 27 microtubular elements in any one cross section. Tubuliferan sperm have a small elliptical (in cross section) acrosome extending the length of the sperm. In Bolothrips insularis and Compsothrips albosignatus this structure is larger and is associated with an external, flattened vesicle throughout its length. Terebrantian sperm lack an acrosome, but display for half their length a dense body running parallel to the nucleus. The sperm, in members of this suborder, are also characterized by possession of a small mitochondrion and by the unusual bilobed outline of cross sections through the anterior sperm region, with the nucleus located in one of the two lobes. Structures serving to anchor sperm to the inner surface of the cyst cell have been observed at their anterior tips in the testes of tubuliferans. In B. insularis, an anterior appendage is formed in immature sperm and is maintained in the mature spermatozoon parallel to its long axis in the most anterior region. Such an anchoring structure has not been observed in sperm of the terebrantian species examined, probably because the testis of terebrantians contains only a single cyst of developing gametes.  相似文献

The high marsh panne ecosystem at Adam's Point, N. H. provides a particular opportunity for holistic, yet autecological approach to the natural history of Trichocorixa verticalis var. sellaris (Corixidae). This area was dominated by physical and chemical factors associated with highly variable salinities (1 to 160) and temperatures (–1 to 40°C) caused by irregular tidal flooding and neap tidal dry periods. Trichocorixa verticalis reach a maximum density of 26,914/m2 (x = 3,909.6/m2) in open shallow pannes, where eggs hatch in staggered sequence, allowing population replenishment after drought and reflooding. Winter eggs hatched between salinities of 0 to 30 at 20°C and 0 to 20 at 10°C. Summer eggs hatched between salinities of 0 to 55 at variable temperatures (20 to 36°C). All instars showed a similar higher summer and lower fall tolerance; immatures were more tolerant than adults. Body molt measurements of the 6 instars are given here.Aside from being herbivores and detritivores, T, verticalis feed on chironomid larvae and oligochaetes. They are food for invertebrates and vertebrates, and provide substantial food for migratory shorebirds.The experimental work was based on a thesis submitted to the Graduate School of the University of New Hampshire in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy.  相似文献

Brochosomes, small secretory particles often found in abundance on the integument of leafhoppers, are currently considered a unique feature of the family Cicadellidae. The present work documents, for the first time, brochosomes in two other groups of Hemiptera, i.e. Psylloidea and Heteroptera. In Heteroptera the occurrence of relatively large amounts of brochosomes on various body parts is documented in several species of different families. Morphological structures of the legs and the setation are illustrated in detail and compared to those of Cicadellidae. The results are based on scanning electron microscopy (SEM) examination of museum specimens. The possible function of brochosomes within Hemiptera is briefly discussed.  相似文献
