Epitomyonia is characterized by various types of dorsal ridges, which may be transverse, longitudinal, or highly convoluted and probably served as skeletal supports for lophophores of various complexity. Multivariate analyses suggest that the Epitomyonia-bearing brachiopod associations lived in relatively shallow-water environment in the Late Ordovician, and inhabited mainly deep-water environments in the early Wenlock. The temporal and spatial change in the faunal distribution may be explained by three alternative scenarios: (1) Epitomyonia followed the broad evolutionary trend of the Palaeozoic Evolutionary Fauna to shift from shallow- to deeper-water settings over time; (2) the dicoelosiid communities could not compete with the large-shelled pentameride communities in continental shelf settings during the Early Silurian; or (3) only the shallow-water Epitomyonia died out in the Late Ordovician mass extinction event, whereas some poorly known deep-water Late Ordovician forms survived into the Early Silurian. Epitomyonia paucitropida n. sp. from the lower Whittaker Formation (late Katian) of the Mackenzie Mountains, northwestern Canada, is reported as the first known Ordovician species of Epitomyonia from the palaeocontinent of Laurentia, characterized by a small shell with weak, transverse dorsal ridges that are most primitive for the genus.  相似文献

A reappraisal of chitinozoan distribution across the Ordovician-Silurian boundary on the Island of Anticosti has led to the recognition of a new zone, the Ancyrochitina ellisbayensis biozone, in the uppermost part of the Ellis Bay Formation. This biozone lies between the well defined Upper Ordovician Spinachitina taugourdeaui biozone and the lowest Silurian (Rhuddanian) Plectochitina nodifera biozone of the Becscie Formation. The occurrence of such diagnostic species as P. nodifera, Belonechitina postrobusta, Conochitina electa and Ancyrochitina ramosaspina in the Lower Silurian of Anticosti points to a close similarity to faunas in Estonia and north Latvia and indicates an age ranging from the Parakidograptus acuminatus to the Coronograptus cyphus in terms of graptolite zones. The chitinozoan biozonation harmonizes with that based on conodonts and, to a lesser extent, with the known graptolite faunal succession. Five new species: Ancyrochitina ellisbayensis sp. nov., Clathrochitina postconcinna sp. nov., Conochitina gunriveris sp. nov., Clathrochitina perexilis sp. nov., Bursachitina basiconcava sp. nov. and three species in open nomenclature are described.  相似文献

The data presented here provide the first high-resolution investigation of carbon and oxygen isotope derived from Boreal Aalenian–Bajocian belemnites from the Isle of Raasay, Scotland, UK. Further isotope data has been gathered from the Toarcian. The carbon-isotope data reveal a positive carbon-isotope excursion in the early Aalenian Scissum Zone (equivalent to the Tethyan Comptum Subzone). The correspondence between this record and Tethyan records lends support that this excursion is global in origin. Although the excursion is coeval with a transgressive interval less obvious is an association with the deposition of organic-rich deposits. An equivocal excursion toward light isotopic close to the Aalenian–Bajocian boundary may be linked to a major pulse of subduction related magmatism. Light oxygen isotopes (and high temperatures) are derived from belemnites from the Toarcian Falciferum Zone. Akin to coeval data from elsewhere surface waters during the Falciferum Zone may have been episodically reduced. Oxygen isotope data from the Aalenian are interpreted to show a cooling trend to a minimum at the base in the Opalinum–Scissum zonal boundary. This major step in cooling is however not entirely coincident with sea-level data and significantly the inferred cooling occurs prior to the positive carbon-isotope excursion. Hence a carbon drawdown and burial scenario that has been interpreted from positive carbon excursions elsewhere cannot drive a precursory cooling episode.  相似文献

The Kutch Basin is unique among the western Indian sedimentary basins because of its near-complete sequence of post-Palaeozoic rocks. Due to extensive marine influence, the Oligocene–Early Miocene formations of the basin, namely Maniyara Fort, Khari Nadi and Chhasra, contain numerous shellbeds. Although age assignments of these formations exist based on foraminiferal biostratigraphy, detailed numerical age of the lithounits are yet to be established. We have identified a total of eleven distinct shellbeds (oldest SB 01 to youngest SB11) from this interval primarily containing bivalve fossils. Using 87Sr/86Sr of selected oyster and pectinid shells with pristine shell characteristics, we report the age of four shellbeds. The ages of SB 01, SB 04, SB 06 and SB 10 are 24.37, 17.31, 16.85 and 15.38 Ma, respectively. Our dates suggest a Chattian (24.37 Ma) age for SB 01 from the Bermoti Member, validating the previous biostratigraphical estimates from the Maniyara Fort Formation. The Chhasra Formation, however, shows a younger range of ages (17.31–15.38 Ma) characterized by a transition from the Burdigalian (SB 04–SB 06) to the Langhian (SB 10) stages. These dates have important implications in the study of sequence stratigraphy, Palaeobiogeography and tectonic history of the Kutch Basin. A surface with subaerial exposure is found in SB 08 (between 16.85 and 15.38 Ma) that corresponds to a global eustatic sea-level decrease (Mi2). Our new dates will also help evaluate the response of marine fauna to the closure of the Tethyan seaway around 19 Ma due to the formation of ‘Gomphotherium Landbridge’. The dated shellbeds enable us to identify pre- and post-closure fauna and assess the effect of biogeographical separation on these fauna. These dates have important implications in evaluating the regional geological record of western India in the context of various global events.  相似文献

This study describes and recognises, using histological and microscopical examinations on a morphometrical basis, several gonad traits through the early life stages of Chiton articulatus and C. albolineatus. Gonadal ontogenesis, gonad development stages, sexual differentiation, onset of the first sexual maturity, and growth sequences or “early life stages” were determined. In addition, allometry between lengths and body weight pooled for both sexes per each chiton were calculated using equation Y = aXb. A total of 125 chitons (4≤TL≤40 mm, in total length “TL”) were used. All allometric relations showed a strong positive correlation (r), close to 1, with b-values above three, indicating an isometric growth. Gonadal ontogenesis and gonad development stages were categorised into three periods (“Pw” without gonad, “Pe” gonad emergence, and “Pf” gonadal sac formed) and four stages (“S0” gametocytogenesis, “S1” gametogenesis, “S2” mature, and “S3” spawning), respectively. Compound digital images were attained for each process. Periods and stages are overlapped among them and between species, with the following overall confidence intervals in TL: Pw 6.13–14.32 mm, Pe 10.32–16.93 mm, Pf 12.99–25.01 mm, S0 16.08–24.34 mm (females) and 19.51–26.60 mm (males), S1 27.15–35.63 mm (females) and 23.45–32.27 mm (males), S2 24.48–40.24 mm (females) and 25.45–32.87 mm (males). Sexual differentiation (in S0) of both chitons occurs first as a female then as a male; although, males reach the onset of the first sexual maturity earlier than females, thus for C. articulatus males at 17 mm and females at 32 mm, and for C. albolineatus males at 23.5 mm and females at 28 mm, all in TL. Four early life stages (i.e., subjuvenile, juvenile, subadult, and adult) are described and proposed to distinguish growth sequences. Our results may be useful to diverse disciplines, from developmental biology to fisheries management.  相似文献

BackgroundEarly warning systems (EWSs) are of increasing importance in the context of outbreak-prone diseases such as chikungunya, dengue, malaria, yellow fever, and Zika. A scoping review has been undertaken for all 5 diseases to summarize existing evidence of EWS tools in terms of their structural and statistical designs, feasibility of integration and implementation into national surveillance programs, and the users’ perspective of their applications.MethodsData were extracted from Cochrane Database of Systematic Reviews (CDSR), Google Scholar, Latin American and Caribbean Health Sciences Literature (LILACS), PubMed, Web of Science, and WHO Library Database (WHOLIS) databases until August 2019. Included were studies reporting on (a) experiences with existing EWS, including implemented tools; and (b) the development or implementation of EWS in a particular setting. No restrictions were applied regarding year of publication, language or geographical area.FindingsThrough the first screening, 11,710 documents for dengue, 2,757 for Zika, 2,706 for chikungunya, 24,611 for malaria, and 4,963 for yellow fever were identified. After applying the selection criteria, a total of 37 studies were included in this review. Key findings were the following: (1) a large number of studies showed the quality performance of their prediction models but except for dengue outbreaks, only few presented statistical prediction validity of EWS; (2) while entomological, epidemiological, and social media alarm indicators are potentially useful for outbreak warning, almost all studies focus primarily or exclusively on meteorological indicators, which tends to limit the prediction capacity; (3) no assessment of the integration of the EWS into a routine surveillance system could be found, and only few studies addressed the users’ perspective of the tool; (4) almost all EWS tools require highly skilled users with advanced statistics; and (5) spatial prediction remains a limitation with no tool currently able to map high transmission areas at small spatial level.ConclusionsIn view of the escalating infectious diseases as global threats, gaps and challenges are significantly present within the EWS applications. While some advanced EWS showed high prediction abilities, the scarcity of tool assessments in terms of integration into existing national surveillance systems as well as of the feasibility of transforming model outputs into local vector control or action plans tends to limit in most cases the support of countries in controlling disease outbreaks.  相似文献

The phylogeny of the Middle Jurassic Cardioceratidae is reconstructed on the basis of a study of their shell morphology and analysis of their stratigraphic distribution. The phylogenetic lineage CranocephalitesArctocephalitesArcticocerasParacadoceras is assigned to the subfamily Arctocephalitinae (Upper Bajocian–lowermost Callovian). The subfamily Cadoceratinae (Upper Bajocian–Callovian) also originating from Cranocephalites includes the phylogenetic lineage GreencephalitesCadocerasLongaeviceras; and lateral branches Chamoussetia and Platychamoussetia. The origin of the Early Callovian Eckhardites, also assigned to Cardioceratidae, is not established. The generic names Rondiceras and Cadochamoussetia are considered as junior synonyms of Cadoceras and Chamoussetia, respectively. The Early Callovian species Cadoceras bellabimba sp. nov. is described.  相似文献

Miocene scleractinian corals were documented for the first time in the Fırat Formation of Sarıca village, Eğil district of Diyarbakır, SE Turkey. The fauna consists of four hermatypic species belonging to three families: Diploastrea taurinensis (d’Achiardi, 1868), Tarbellastraea reussiana (Milne-Edwards and Haime, 1850), Echinopora gemmacea (Lamarck, 1816) and Montastraea pelouaensis (Chevalier, 1954). The morphospecies described here are typical of the early Miocene (Aquitanian-Burdigalian) and show that the Fırat Formation coral community was composed of shallow and subtropical reefs of Mediterranean Tethys palaeobiogeographical affinity. The examined species are reef components found in tropical and subtropical oceans, as are the majority of zooxanthellae. The species were upper photic zone related, had massive colonial growth morphology, and lived in a shallow tropical-subtropical marine palaeoenvironment at a depth of up to 50 m. They grew on hard ground, clean water, and normal salinity and required a minimum seawater temperature of 18 ̊C; however, they were most abundant at water temperatures ranging from 22 to 26 ̊C in high-moderate water energy. Consequently, this fossil assemblage will not only improve our knowledge of scleractinian coral diversity and morphological variation in SE Turkey but will also provide an important background for future studies of coral taxonomy, diversity and biogeography of the region.  相似文献

Oestradiol-17β (1.0μg) was injected intravenously into ovariectomized rats. The earliest detectable hormonal response in isolated uterine nuclei was an increase (10–15min) in RNA polymerase II activity (DNA-like RNA synthesis), which reached a peak at 30min and then decreased to control values (by 1–2h) before displaying a second increase over control activity from 2 to 12h. The next response to oestradiol-17β was an increase (30–60min) in polymerase I activity (rRNA synthesis) and template capacity of the chromatin. The concentrations of acidic chromatin proteins did not begin to increase until 1h after injection of oestradiol-17β and histone concentrations showed no significant changes during the 8h period after administration. The early (15min) increase in RNA synthesis in `high-salt conditions' can be completely eliminated by α-amanitin, an inhibitor of the RNA polymerase II. The exact nature of this early increase in endogenous polymerase II activity remains to be determined, e.g. whether it is caused by the increased availability of transcribable DNA of the chromatin or via direct hormonal activation of the enzyme per se.  相似文献

The Upper Cenomanian–Lower Turonian litho-stratigraphic units of the Danubian Cretaceous Group of the proximal Bodenwöhrer Senke (Regensburg, Eibrunn and Winzerberg formations, the latter consisting of a lower Reinhausen Member and an upper Knollensand Member), have been investigated with a focus on facies analysis and sequence stratigraphy. Analyses of litho-, bio-, and microfacies resulted in the recognition of 12 predominantly marine facies types for the Eibrunn and Winzerberg formations. Petrographic and paleontological properties as well as gradual transitions in the sections suggest that their depositional environment was a texturally graded, predominantly siliciclastic, storm-dominated shelf. The muddy–siliceous facies types FT 1–3 have been deposited below the storm wave-base in an outer shelf setting. Mid-shelf deposits are represented by fine- to medium-grained, bioturbated, partly glauconitic sandstones (FT 4–6). Coarse-grained, gravelly and/or shell-bearing sandstones (FT 7–10) developed in the inner shelf zone. Highly immature, arkosic coarse-grained sandstones and conglomerates (FT 11 and 12) characterize an incised, high-gradient braided river system. The Winzerberg Formation with its general coarsening- and thickening-upward trend reflects a regressive cycle culminating in a subaerial unconformity associated with a coarse-grained, gravelly unit of marine to fluvial origin known as the “Hornsand” which is demonstrably diachronous. The overlying Altenkreith Member of the Roding Formation signifies the onset of a new transgressive cycle in the early Middle Turonian. The sequence stratigraphic analysis suggests that the deposition of the Upper Cenomanian and Lower Turonian strata of the Bodenwöhrer Senke took place in a single cycle of third-order eustatic sea-level change between the major sequence boundaries SB Ce 5 (mid-Late Cenomanian) and SB Tu 1 (Early–Middle Turonian boundary interval). The southeastern part of the Bodenwöhrer Senke was flooded in the mid-Late Cenomanian (Praeactinocamax plenus transgression) and a second transgressive event occurred in the earliest Turonian. In the central and northwestern parts of the Bodenwöhrer Senke, however, the initial transgression occurred during the earliest Turonian, related to pre-transgression topography. Thus, the Regensburg and Eibrunn formations are increasingly condensed here and cannot be separated anymore. Following an earliest Turonian maximum flooding, the Lower Turonian Winzerberg Formation filled the available accommodation space, explaining its constant thickness of 35–40 m across the Bodenwöhrer Senke and excluding tectonic activity during this interval. Rapid sea-level fall at SB Tu 1 terminated this depositional sequence. This study shows that Late Cenomanian–Early Turonian deposition in the Bodenwöhrer Senke was governed by eustatic sea-level changes.  相似文献

α4 integrins (α4β1 and α4β7) have been shown to mediate both cell-matrix adhesion to fibronectin and cell-cell adhesion to VCAM-1. These interactions have been suggested to contribute to hematopoiesis, lymphocyte homing, recruitment of inflammatory cells, neural crest cell migration and myogenesis. We report here the cloning of chicken α4 cDNA and its use to define the patterns of expression of α4 mRNA and protein in early chicken embryos (19–22 somite pairs), a stage at which neural crest cells can be examined at various points in their migration and somitic development and differentiation can also be observed at various stages. We observe widespread expression of both α4 mRNA and protein, although the patterns of steady state expression do not conform precisely. Many neural crest cells contain significant levels of α4 mRNA. Some neural crest cells express α4 protein but its expression is transient and/or limited to a subset of these cells. α4 is strongly expressed at both mRNA and protein levels by somitic cells and their derivatives in the sclerotome, dermatome and myotome and is also expressed in neural tube, otic placode, heart, gut endoderm and some other tissues. Comparison with the distributions of fibronectin shows that, although some α4 expression occurs in locations consistent with a role in cell-matrix adhesion to fibronectin, α4 is also expressed in other places where fibronectin is low or absent and a role for α4 in cell-cell interactions appears more likely.  相似文献

A small bird with a shorebird-like beak and a very long hind toe is described from the Early Eocene of Messel in Germany. Vanolimicola longihallucis, gen. et sp. nov. is one of the few candidate species for a “wading bird” from Messel, that is, a bird that may have foraged along the shoreline of the ancient lake. A few features indicate a relationship to charadriiform birds and Jacanidae (jacanas) in particular, but charadriiform affinities are only weakly supported. In the preserved skeletal elements, V. longihallucis also resembles the taxon Songzia from the Early Eocene of China, which is considered to be a representative of the Ralloidea (rails and allies). A potential biogeographic significance of the new Messel fossil is strengthened by similar fossils from the North American Green River Formation.  相似文献
