Intrapleural pressure, the tracheal air flow and tidal volume were recorded simultaneously in pentobarbital-anaesthetized dogs and changes occurring in them during defensive reflexes elicited by mechanical stimulation of the mucosa of different parts of the respiratory tract were evaluated quantitatively. The results show that, in addition to coughing and sneezing provoked by inserting a nylon fibre into the tracheobronchial region, the larynx and the nose, further respiratory reflexes described in other mammals also appear in these animals. Mechanical stimulation of the epipharynx with a fine polyvinylchloride catheter, for instance, also produces in dogs an aspiration reflex characterized by sniff-like inspiratory efforts without subsequent active expiration. Touching the vocal folds, however, produces an expiration reflex consisting of expiratory efforts without preceding inspiratory effort. The character of all these reflexes is typical and closely resembles their character in cats. Stimulation of the various parts of the respiratory tract sometimes evokes an apnoeic reaction instead of typical respiratory defensive reflexes.  相似文献

Active defensive reflexes were elaborated in cats with pain stimulations of the forepaw by means of an electrical pricking device with a target attached to it. The elaboration was carried out during action of a flickering light used for the convenience of the EEG analysis. Repeated pain stimulation led to elaboration of an aggressive attacking reaction, chiefly manifested in the paw striking the target. At the beginning of the elaboration, passive-defensive reactions were manifest, which did not completely disappear even after formation of a stable attacking reflex. Two types of active defensive reflexes were elaborated: A-type reflex which helped the animal to get rid of the pain stimulation at the very beginning; B-type reflex which prevented the pain stimulation. The effects of pressure stimulation of the body surface on postural activities as well as on the response gain of limb extensors to natural stimulation of labyrinth receptors were investigated in intact, as well as in decerebrate cats. In intact, unanesthetized cats, slight pressure applied symmetrically to the body surface at the chest level decreased the tonic activity of the axial (neck) and limb extensor musculature, as well as the proprioceptive reflexes induced by passive flexion of the limbs. The positive supporting reaction caused by pressure applied to the pad of the foot was also depressed. If the cats were suspended in the air by their nape, slight pressure applied to the upper part of the body greatly reduced the tonic contraction of the forelimb extensors to linear acceleration after downward movement of the animal, a response which can be attributed to stimulation of macular receptors located in the sacculus. Moreover, the prominent myotatic reflexes which occurred in all four limbs as soon as the animal touched the floor were greatly depressed, as shown by the fact that the forelimbs displayed only a slight tonic contraction of the extensor musculature during landing, while the hindlimbs collapsed under the weight of the body. In precollicular decerebrate cats there was a good postural activity in all four limbs. Moreover, the multiunit EMG activity of the medial head of the triceps brachii responded to roll tilt of the animal (at 0.15 Hz, +/- 10 degrees) leading to selective stimulation of labyrinth receptors. These responses, characterized by an increased EMG activity during side-down tilt and a decreased activity during side-up tilt, were related to animal position and not to velocity of animal displacement, and are thus attributable to stimulation of macular, utricular receptors. Slight pressure applied to the chest greatly decreased not only the postural activity of the limbs, but also the amplitude of EMG modulation and then the gain in the first harmonic component of the multiunit EMG responses of the triceps brachii to animal tilt. This reduced gain was due, in particular, to a reduced number of motor units being recruited during labyrinth stimulation, although a reduced modulation of firing rate of the active motor units should not be ruled out. In experiments on seven cats instrumental delayed reflexes with different quality reinforcement were elaborated by method of "active choice", where the time of delay of the motor reaction served as a signal of quality of the reinforcement. Five cats used a strategy with long delay high-quality reinforcement (meat), and two cats preferred short delay and low-quality reinforcement (bread-meat mixture). In special experiments with the change of alimentary motivation (24-hour alimentary deprivation and saturation of animals) it was established that the level of alimentary motivation within the studied limits did not change the strategy of behaviour preferred by the given animal. Individually varying ability to choice of reaction determining more valuable reinforcement it is possible to consider as an experimental analogue of the mechanisms of will. The question is discussed about the role of typological properties of cats in choice of behaviour strategy.  相似文献

Hoffmann reflexes (H reflexes) were elicited from both legs simultaneously in human subjects at varying intervals after a reaction signal (RS) in a binary choice reaction time task. A left light RS required a rapid plantar flexion of the left foot and a right light RS required a similar rapid response of the right foot. A large faciliataion of reflex amplitude occurred only in the muscle involved in the movement (right of left soleus). The timing of the facilitation indicated that a decision about the status of the RS occurred within 200 msec and probably was completed somewhat earlier. Furthermore, the facilitation of the H reflexes was shown to be closely linked with the organization required for the contractions of the responding muscle. The results are considered in the light of hypothesized mechanisms regulating voluntary movement.  相似文献

Elongation of the femoral chordotonal organ (signalling a flexion movement of the femur-tibia joint) in stick insects being active releases the active reaction (AR) in the extensor and flexor motor neurones. The AR was released in hindlegs in a situation where free animals would preferentially walk backwards. In most cases the coordination between extensor-flexor and the retractor unguis muscle was like in a stance phase of backward walking. In a situation where free animals would preferentially walk forwards, the percentage of ARs was smaller, and resistance reflexes became more frequent. When campaniform sensilla of the hind leg were destroyed coordinations like in a swing phase of forward walking became more frequent. — Additional stimuli during searching movements in an artificially closed femur-tibia feedback system (Weiland et al. 1986) showed that the AR is expressed also under these conditions and controls velocity and endpoint of a flexion movement. All results support the idea that the neural system producing the AR is a functional element of the pattern generator for forward walking, of the one for backward walking and of the one for searching movements. As far as this system is concerned the three pattern generators only differ in the kind of coordinating pathways between constant functional elements.  相似文献

The factors leading to pronounced emotional stress accompanied by changes in electrical activity of hippocampus were studied in four dogs during elaboration of conditioned switching-over of heterogeneous instrumental reflexes. Objectively recorded signs of emotional stress were observed in two cases: when the animal was not accurate enough in discerning defensive and alimentary situations and throughout the improvement of instrumental defensive reflex. Pronouncement of hippocampal theta-rhythm increased at those stages of switching-over elaboration where the probability of successful avoiding pain stimulation was relatively low. The data obtained permit the conclussion that theta-rhythm is the correlate of the degree of the emotional stress and not only a manifestation of general arousal reaction depending on the level of sensory input.  相似文献

The dynamics of formation, reproduction, and recognition of trace conditioned reflexes to positive and differentiation stimuli was studied on subjects of 15-17 years old. Formation and reproduction of such reflexes was found to occur under a close interaction of both levels of the higher nervous activity--recognized and unrecognized levels. Recognized reactions prevailed on unrecognized ones in cases of involvement of active attention. On the basis of this fact, the formation and reproduction of trace conditioned reflexes to positive stimuli has been supposed to occur with an active participation of the left hemisphere. The right hemisphere apparently plays a leading role in formation and reproduction of trace conditioned reflexes to differention stimuli to which the attention of the subjects was not fixed.  相似文献

Summary The sites of calcium-activated myosin ATP-ase reaction have been determined by a method modified from that of Padykula and Hermann. On coherent muscle preparations the enzyme was found to be mainly active in the segment A, although reaction was sometimes observed in the strip Z also. In several cases the precipitate appeared in a spherical shape in the segment A. Since no such phenomenon was observed in isolated bundles of myofibrils it is supposed to be an artefact. The reaction appeared in fibre bundles at 300 to 400 Å intervals, and a certain spatial periodicity was observed also on isolated thick filaments.  相似文献

We investigated the role of local nonspiking interneurons involved in motor control of legs in the stick insect, Carausius morosus. In a preparation that allowed the animals to perform active leg movements such as adaptive tactile reflexes, proprioceptive reflexes, and walking, we gathered the following results. Almost all tested nonspiking interneurons that provide synaptic drive onto motoneurons of the proximal leg muscles contribute to all of the motor programs underlying tactile reflexes and voluntary leg movements such as walking, searching, and rocking. Most of them are also involved in the generation of proprioceptive reflexes. All motor programs for coactivation, avoidance reflexes, resistance reflexes, and voluntary leg movements result from parallel pathways including nonspiking interneurons that support and others that oppose the motoneuronal activity. The contribution of a single interneuron to the different motor programs is specific: it can be supporting for one motor program but opposing for the other. Even for the same motor program, for example, coactivation, the contribution of an individual interneuron can depend on the stimulus site from where the response is elicited. Our results support the idea that the different motor patterns for adaptive tactile reflexes, resistance reflexes, and voluntary leg movements emerge from a multifunctional neuronal circuit that is reorganized corresponding to the motor behavior performed. The actual motor pattern is then shaped by distributed information processing in parallel supporting and opposing pathways. © 1996 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.  相似文献

Three fatal cases of purulent meningitis and one fatal case of thromboembolic necrotizing meningoencephalitis occurred in chimpanzees from the Primate Center TNO, The Netherlands. In addition, two apes had clinical signs of meningitis and were successfully treated. The severity of the residual hemiparesis and dysphagia in one of these two apes was such that it was killed for humane reasons. The histopathological diagnosis was chronic active meningoencephalitis. Streptococcus pneumoniae was isolated from five apes and Klebsiella pneumoniae from one. In the majority of cases, the primary site of infection was the upper respiratory tract. After reducing the population density, initiating a vaccination program using a commercially available human polyvalent pneumococcal vaccine, and changing the cleaning procedure of the animal facilities, no other cases of meningitis or meningoencephalitis have occurred in the chimpanzee colony in the ensuing 3.5 years.  相似文献

  1. In the stick insect Carausius morosus the properties of the neuronal network governing the femur-tibia joint depend on the behavioral state of the animal. In the inactive animal flexion of the femur-tibia joint results in the generation of a resistance reflex, while in the active animal the same stimulus induces the so-called active reaction, the first part of which is a reflex reversal.
  2. Recordings from motoneurons innervating the extensor tibiae muscle indicated that their time course of activity during the active reaction is due to inputs from intercalated pathways. We therefore investigated the role of identified nonspiking interneurons that transmit sensory information from the chordotonal organ onto the extensor motoneurons in the inactive animal. We can show that (i) the nonspiking interneurons received altered inputs whereas (ii) they provided qualitatively the same synaptic drive onto leg motoneurons.
  3. From our results it is clear that (i) neuronal pathways contributing to the generation of the resistance reflex are also involved in the generation of the reflex reversal in the same control loop, (ii) thereby adopting the same principle of information processing (parliamentary principle), because both, supporting and opposing pathways contribute to the generation of the motor output.

  1. The movements of blind goldfish flown in an aircraft through vertical flight patterns show a consistent correlation with the varyingg loads as recorded by ag meter.
  2. Decreasing theg load in all tested cases caused the fish to rapidly dive downwards after an approximate delay of 0.5–1.5 sec. The opposite reaction, a tilt and movement upwards, was observed in transitions from a lower to a higherg load, though the latter reaction was not as pronounced.
  3. Because any potential influence of visual cues, swimming bladder reflexes, and changing barometric pressure was excluded by experimental precautions, we concluded that the response of the fish to varyingg loads were vestibular reflexes probably resulting from displacements of the otoliths during vertical accelerations.
  4. It is concluded from data in the literature and from the present results, that the behavioral responses resulting from static or dynamic forces are counterdirected toward the otolith displacements caused by these forces. Consequently, the behavioral, responses are counterdirected toward the gravitational pull on the animal, but must have the same direction as mechanical forces, which accelerate the whole organism and displace the otolith by inertia. It is concluded therefore, that the otolith reflexes have adaptive value only in a gravitational or centrifugal field, but are unsuitable to subserve any stabilizing function in the case of inertial forces during weightlessness.

Bilateral ablation of the putamen results in temporary disappearance of natural as well as artificial conditioned motor reflexes in cats. Further training is necessary for their reestablishment. Restored conditioned reflexes appear with a long latency. After partial bilateral ablation of the putamen, animals that have been trained not only to press a pedal, but also to make a choice between a right or left feeding tray, lose the latter ability. After the reestablishment of conditioned reflexes, the animal makes a correct choice of side only in 68--70% of cases. After total bilateral ablation of the putamen the animals lose artificial conditioned reflexes. The results suggest that the putamen has a close relation to the mechanisms of learning and memory.  相似文献

The functional state of the synthetic apparatus of animal blood lymphocytes under weak low-frequency magnetic fields was studied. The changes in blood cell synthetic activity and leukocyte formula, a signal index of general nonspecific adaptation reactions, were shown. In the majority of cases examined, the variable magnetic fields increase the functional activity of the lymphocyte synthetic apparatus, improve the type of adaptation reaction, and enhance the level of immune resistance of the organism.  相似文献

Disturbances were studied of the motor defensive conditioned reflexes in rats radiated in a dose of 100 Gy at different stages of formation and stabilization of temporary connection. In comparison with consolidated (automatized) conditioned reflexes of active avoidance, early stages of formation and stabilization of the temporary connection are characterized by a relatively low resistance against extreme factors and by deepest disturbances of reproduction in radiated animals. The most probable mechanisms of these disturbances are connected with pathological changes of the nervous processes balance towards an increase of excitability and weakening of internal inhibition. Yet a direct radiation influence on the mechanisms of temporary connection reproduction at the second stage of its consolidation cannot be excluded. The role is shown of the emotional reactivity in the above-described processes.  相似文献

The modulatory actions of the biogenic amine octopamine on the femur tibia (FT) control loop in the stick insect Carausius morosus were examined. The response properties of the FT control loop were determined under open loop conditions. Mechanical stimulation of the femoral chordotonal organ (fCO) was the input and tibial movement and motoneuronal activity were measured as the output of the system. Following octopamine injection into the hemolymph of intact, inactive animals, two consecutive phases occurred at the behavioral level. Octopamine caused initially an activation of the animal. During this first phase (3.5–12 min duration) the response properties of the FT control loop were similar to those found in animals that were activated by tactile stimuli under normal conditions. Afterward, animals became inactive. During this second phase (15–20 min duration), the gain of the control loop was zero and no resistance reflex in the FT joint was generated in response to fCO stimulation. However, active movements of the tibia could still be elicited. As we could show in restrained animals, where dl-octopamine was applied topically onto the undesheated mesothoracic ganglion, the complete suppression of the resistance reflex on the motoneuronal level was dose dependent starting at concentrations of 5 ± 10?3 M octopamine. We could show that octopamine specifically suppressed the pathways involved in the resistance reflex, while feedback loop responses to fCO stimuli typical for active animals could still be elicited. Our results indicate that an increase in the octopamine concentration mimicks activation of the animal: Properties being characteristic for the control of the FT joint in the inactive animal are inhibited by octopamine, while properties of the FT control loop typical for the active animal appear to be facilitated following octopamine injection. The results clearly demonstrate that different pathways in the neuronal network underlying the FT control loop are involved in the responses of the control loop to fCO stimuli in the inactive and active behavioral states of the stick insect. © 1993 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.  相似文献

Male rats castrated neonatally and treated with a combination of 0.5 μg estradiol benzoate (EB) plus 50μg dihydrotestosterone propionate (DHTP) for the next 14 days displayed normal sexual behavior when injected with testosterone propionate (TP) in adulthood. Neither EB nor DHTP alone had this developmental effect inasmuch as only 20–25% of the neonatal castrates treated with just 0.1, 0.5, or 10 μg EB, or 50 μg DHTP, displayed ejaculatory responses. The periodic application of mildly painful electric shock, which has been previously shown to markedly facilitate ejaculatory responding in normal male rats, failed to improve sexual performance in these latter subjects. This was true even of the castrates treated neonatally with DHTP which frequently intromitted. Castrates treated with EB or DHTP alone neonatally were subjected to spinal transection (after testing of sexual behavior) for examination of penile reflexes. Those treated with DHTP showed normal reflexes, characterized by numerous erections and flips, indicating the presumably nonaromatizable DHTP has developmental effects on penile reflexes similar to those of testosterone. Subjects treated with EB, including four animals that had ejaculated at least once, displayed very few, if any, erections on reflex tests and no flips. These results show that sometimes intromissive and ejaculatory patterns can occur even though the animal appears to have little or no capacity for penile reflexes.  相似文献

Properties were studied of elaboration of conditioned alimentary secretory reflexes to threshold electric stimulation of the caudate nucleus in dogs. The rate of formation of such a reflex and its magnitude were considerably lower than in reflexes elaborated to distant stimuli. Latencies were longer; dynamics of conditioned and unconditioned secretory reactions was similar to that of reflexes to a weak stimulus--light. The motor component of the conditioned alimentary reaction, as a rule, was absent. Characteristics were revealed of formation of alimentary reflexes to stimulation of the dorsal and ventral parts of the head and body of the caudate nucleus.  相似文献

In experiments on active ground squirrels, it was possible to form motor defensive conditioned reflexes and to re-arrange the conditioned reflexes from visual and auditory analysers. It was originally demonstrated that repetitive alteration of the informational content of the conditioned stimuli results in neurotic disturbances in animals.  相似文献
