The longevity and desiccation tolerance of samples of seedsof a japonica rice (Oryza sativa L.) harvested serially duringdevelopment from plants grown in two temperature regimes, viz28/20 °C and 32/24 °C (12/12 h) were determined. Massmaturity (defined as the end of the seed-filling phase) occurred19·7 and 18·3 d after 50% anthesis, respectively.Longevity (determined at 40 °C with 15% moisture contentand quantified by the value of the constant Ki of the seed viabilityequation) improved during seed development and maturation until17 and 14 d after mass maturity in the cooler and warmer regimes, respectively, but declined thereafter. Changes in Ki with timewere similar in the two environments until mass maturity, butthe increase in Ki values after mass maturity was much greaterin the cooler regime. Tolerance of desiccation to low (4%) moisturecontents improved until 22 and 14 d after mass maturity in thecooler and warmer regimes, respectively, when maturation dryinghad reduced seed moisture contents naturally to 24 and 32% moisturecontent, respectively. Further delays to seed harvest reduceddesiccation tolerance, particularly in the warmer environment.Comparison among 15 samples of seeds harvested at differenttimes in the two environments showed a strong correlation (r= 0·947, P < 0·01) between longevity (Ki) anddesiccation tolerance (to 4% moisture content). Hence, it issuggested that the regulation of desiccation tolerance to lowmoisture contents and potential air-dry longevity during seeddevelopment and maturation determined here may have a commoncause.Copyright 1994, 1999 Academic Press Oryza sativa L., rice, desiccation tolerance, genebanks, seed development, seed longevity, temperature  相似文献

Changes in seed quality during ripening were studied in sixteencultivars of rice, representing the three ecogeographic racesofOryza sativa, and one cultivar ofO. glaberrima, grown duringone dry season (Nov. –May) 1992 –1993 at Los Baños, Philippines. Mass maturity (defined as the end ofseed filling period) among the cultivars was attained between18.5 and 21.6d after anthesis (DAA). The seed moisture contentat mass maturity varied between 24 and 40%. Germination abilityof seeds in the early stages of development varied significantly, but as mass maturity approached, germination increased to themaximum and no significant differences were found among cultivars. The seeds were stored hermetically at 35 °C with 15±0.2%moisture content and the resultant seed survival data were analysedby probit analysis. Potential longevity (quantified by the valueof seed lot constantKiof the seed viability equation) was greatestbetween 33 and 37 DAA, i.e. about 2 weeks after mass maturity. The stage during development at which seeds achieve maximumpotential longevity is described by the term storage maturity.Lowlandjaponicacultivars, large seeded accessions (seed mass40mg) andO. glaberrimahad shorter storage longevity ( , standarddeviation of the frequency of seed deaths in time=1.47 weeks)while cultivars with purple pericarp survived longer than othercultivars ( =2.33 weeks). The initial germination of thejaponicacultivarsat storage maturity was high (99 –100%) and the estimatesof maximum potential longevity (Ki) which ranged between 3.3(Shuang cheng nuo) and 4.4 (Minehikare) were close to thoseof theindicacultivars. This research suggests that seed production environment betweenNov. and May at Los Ba ños is benign for the temperatejaponicacultivars. The implications of these results on management of rice geneticresources are discussed. The lower limit to the negative logarithmic relation betweenseed longevity and moisture content was determined in threesubspecies of rice (Oryza satwa L.) by storing seeds of fivecultivars at 65 °C with 11 different moisture contents (1.5–15.3%f. wt) for various periods up to 150 d and then testing forgermination. The estimates of the low-moisture-content limit(mc) were 4.3% for subsp. indica, 4.4% for subsp. japonica, and 4.5% for subsp. javanica. These moisture contents were inequilibrium with 10.5—12.0% r.h. No significant effectof moisture content between 1.5% and mc on longevity was detected(P > 0.05), while between mc and 15.3% there were negativelogarithmic relations between longevity and moisture content. There were no significant differences in the relations betweenlongevity and moisture either above or below mc between thetwo japonica cultivars or between the two javanica cultivars(P > 0.10). There was also no significant difference in theslope of the negative logarithmic relation between longevityand moisture above mc among the three subspecies (P > 0.25).However, there were significant differences in the standarddeviation of the frequency distribution of seed deaths in timeat any one moisture content, both above and below mc; this isa measure of seed longevity which is independent of pre-storageenvironment, and the differences observed show that there aregenetically determined differences in longevity among the threesubspecies (P < 0.005), indica being the longest and japonicathe shortest lived. The results provide no evidence for intra-specificvariation in mc and support the view that the maximum seed storagemoisture content which provides the maximum longevity is thatwhich is in equilibrium with about 10–11% r.h. It is concludedthat while the seed viability constant Cw of the seed viabilityequation is species specific and therefore applies to most,if not all, cultivars of rice, variation in the value of KEis the source of the differences in potential longevity of thethree subspecies. Seeds of two lettuce cultivars (Lactuca sativa L., cv. Meikoninginand cv. Grand Rapids) were hermetically stored with constantmoisture contents ranging between 3.6 and 17.9 per cent (freshweight basis) at constant temperatures ranging between 5 and75 °C. The decline with time in percentage germination andpercentage normal seedlings was determined for each storagetreatment. The data were fitted to an equation which containsthe constants: K1, the probit of the initial percentage germinationor normal seedlings; KE, a species constant; CW, the constantof a logarithmic moisture term; CH, the constant of a lineartemperature term and CQ, the constant of a quadratic temperatureterm. Regression analysis of data from storage periods up to5.5 years at temperatures of 5–75 °C and seed moisturecontents of 3.6–13.6 per cent yielded the following values:KE= 8.218, CW=4.797±0.163, CH=0.0489±0.0050 andCQ=0.000365±0.000056. Although this equation consistentlyprovided a better fit, simplified equations, assuming eithera log-linear relationship between seed longevity and temperature,or a log-linear relationship between seed longevity and bothmoisture content and temperature, accounted for more than 94per cent of the variation at the restricted temperature rangeof 5–40 °C. Longevity of the same seed lots at sub-zero temperatures (–5,–10 and –20 °C) was studied in separate tests.Freezing damage, resulting in abnormal seedlings in the germinationtest, occurred at –20 °C when the moisture contentof the seeds exceeded 12 per cent. No decline in percentagenormal seedlings was observed after a storage period of 18 monthsor longer at –20 °C, provided the seed moisture contentdid not exceed 9.5 per cent. For seeds stored at –5 and–10 °C with 9.6–12.5 per cent moisture content, the observed rate of decline of percentage normal seedlingswas adequately predicted by the viability equation, using theabove values for the constants. This suggests that for low moisturecontents the viability equation can be applied to estimate longevityat sub-zero temperatures. Winter wheat (Triticum aestivum L.) cv. Hereward was grown inthe field in two double-walled polyethylene-covered tunnelswithin each of which a temperature gradient was superimposedon diurnal and seasonal fluctuations in temperature. The meantemperature between anthesis and harvest maturity varied from14.3 to 18.4C among plots within these tunnels. The CO2 concentrationwas controlled at different values in each tunnel; seasonalmean concentrations were 380 and 684 µmol CO2 mol–1air. Crops were also grown outside the tunnels at ambient temperaturesand CO2. Samples of seeds were harvested sequentially from eachplot between anthesis and harvest maturity. Seed germinationand seed survival during subsequent air-dry storage were determinedfor each sample. The onset of both ability to germinate anddesiccation tolerance (ability to germinate after rapid desiccationto 10–15% moisture content and subsequent rehydration)coincided in all environments. Full germination capacity (>97%, determined at 10C) was reached 4–18 d before theend of the seed-filling phase (mass maturity) in most cases. There was little or no decline in germination capacity duringsubsequent seed development and maturation. Differences in seedquality were evident, however, throughout seed development andmaturation when seed survival curves during subsequent storagewere compared. Potential longevity in air-dry storage (assessedby the value K1 of the seed viability equation) improved consistentlyboth before and after mass maturity. There was a significantpositive relation between the rate of increase in potentiallongevity (dK1Idt) and temperature (the minimum temperaturefor seed quality development was 4.8 C), but neither CO2 concentrationnor production within the polyethylene tunnels affected thisrelation. When water stress was imposed on detached leaves of two rice(Oryza sativa L.) cultivars, more ABA per unit fresh weightaccumulated in IR20, a small-leaved cultivar, than in 63–83,a large-leaved cultivar; the difference being up to threefold. In an F2 population of a cross between the two cultivars ABAaccumulation was found to be significantly negatively correlatedwith leaf fresh weight. This correlation persisted in the F3generation. Such a correlation was not evident, however, whena number of rice cultivars, which varied widely in leaf size, were examined. The difference in ABA accumulation between IR20 and 63–83was not accounted for by different spatial patterns of waterloss or ABA accumulation within a leaf, and cultivar differencesin ABA content were maintained both across, and at various positionsalong the leaf. No major differences in leaf anatomy were observed between thetwo cultivars. Differences found in leaf water relations characteristicswere few and generally minor. It therefore seems unlikely thatthese properties account for the difference between the cultivarsin the ability to accumulate ABA or for the correlation withleaf size. The relationship between coleoptile elongation and survivalvs. alcoholic fermentation of rice under anoxia is examinedusing eight cultivars differing in submergence tolerance. Anoxiawas imposed on either 1 or 4 d aerated seeds either by N2 flushingsubmerged tissues or by incubating tissues in stagnant deoxygenatedagar at 0·1% w/v; the latter simulated the stagnant conditionsof waterlogged soil. Two cultivars that were most tolerant tosubmergence also had the greatest tolerance to anoxia, whilea submergence intolerant cultivar was also intolerant to anoxia. Coleoptile growth under anoxia was related to rates of ethanolsynthesis (RE), however differences between growth during anoxiaand survival after anoxia indicated that post-anoxic injurymay also be important in rice seeds exposed to anoxia. The correlationbetween coleoptile growth and RE measured on a tissue basisusing intact seeds was r2 = 0·67 among six varietiesover 0-3 d anoxia. This correlation improved to about r2 = 0·85using RE of (embryos plus coleoptiles) over 0-3 d, or coleoptilesat 3 d after anoxia. Coleoptile growth of individual seeds wasusually poorly correlated to RE in these cultivars at 2-3 dafter anoxia. When coleoptiles of similar lengths were obtainedfrom different cultivars using 4 d aerated seeds, there weredifferences in RE and coleoptile growth which were related tocoleoptile growth during 3 or 5 d anoxia, either on a tissue(r2 = 0·85) or a fresh weight basis (r2 = 0·70-0·97respectively). Results are discussed in relation to factorswhich may limit ethanol synthesis in rice exposed to anoxiaand the importance of growth to the survival of seeds and matureplants during submergence in the natural environment.Copyright1994, 1999 Academic Press Anoxia, ethanol, alcoholic fermentation, Oryza sativa L., rice, submergence  相似文献

This research determined constants for a viability equationto predict the longevity of groundnut seeds and to improve themanagement of seedlot storage throughout the trading period.Seeds of the Brazilian cultivar ‘Tatu’ (Valenciabunch type) were tested. Nine moisture content levels (rangingfrom 2.4 to 12.8%) and three storage temperatures (40, 50 and65 °C) were used. Sub-samples for each moisture content-storagetemperature combination were sealed in laminated aluminium-foilpackets and stored in incubators until complete survival curveswere obtained. A reliable equation was obtained to predict groundnutseed longevity through the constantsKE=6.177,CW=3.426,CH=0.0304andCQ=0.000453.Copyright 1998 Annals of Botany Company Arachis hypogaeaL., seed longevity, seed storage, viability equation.  相似文献

Endogenous levels of gibberellins in shoots and ears of twodwarf rice (Oryza sativa L.) cultivars, Tan-ginbozu (dx mutant)and Waito-C (dy mutant), were analyzed and compared with thoseof normal rice cultivar, Nihonbare. The endogenous levels of13-hydroxylated gibberellins in Tan-ginbozu were much lowerthan those in Nihonbare. In Waito-C, the levels of GA19 andGA20 in the shoots were higher but that of GA1 was lower thanthe levels of these gibberellins in Nihonbare. These resultssupport the hypothesis that the dy gene controls the 3ß-hydroxylationof GA20 to GA1 while the dx gene controls a much earlier stepin the gibberellin biosynthesis. Our results indicate that GA1is the active gibberellin that regulates the vegetative growthof rice. The endogenous levels of GA4 in the ears of the twodwarf cultivars of rice were higher than the level of GA4 inthe ears of the normal cultivar, Nihonbare suggesting that thebiosynthesis of gibberellin is not blocked in the anthers ofthe dwarf rice. Low Moisture Content Limits to Relations Between Seed Longevity and Moisture   总被引:25,自引:1,他引:24
Discontinuities at low moisture contents in the otherwise logarithmicrelations between seed longevity and seed moisture content (%,f. wt basis) in hermetic storage at 65 °C were detectedat 2–0% in groundnut (Arachis hypogaea L.), 3·5%in onion (Allium cepa L.), 4·5% in sugar beet (Beta vulgarisL.), 4·6% in barley (Hordeum vulgare L.), 5·3%in chickpea (Cicer arietinum L.) and wheat (Triticum aestinumL.), and 5·6% in cowpea [Vigna unguiculata (L.) Walp.].In contrast, the equilibrium relative humidity of seeds at thesevalues was similar, varying between 9·9% (onion and sugarbeet) and 11·5% (wheat). The mean value was 10·5%r.h. (s.e. 0.2). There was no significant (P > 0·05)effect of further reduction in seed moisture content below thesecritical values on longevity, except in wheat (P < 0·005),in which there was a further increase in longevity. In soyabean [Glycine max (L) Merrill], the logarithmic relation continueddown to the lowest moisture content investigated, 3·3%(11·4% equilibrium relative humidity). Above the criticalvalue, seed longevity in groundnut showed the least sensitivityto increase in percentage moisture content, while barley showedthe greatest, the values of the viability constant Cw (slopeof the negative logarithmic relation between longevity and moisture)being 4·089 (s.e. 0·278) and 5·966 (s.e.0·325), respectively. These differences in the valueof Cw among the eight crops were significant P < 0·005),whereas the relative sensitivity of seed longevity to changein equilibrium relative humidity above the critical moisturecontent did not differ significantly among the eight (P >0·10) and was equivalent to a doubling of longevity foreach 8·7% reduction in equilibrium relative humidity.Accordingly it is concluded that the relative effect of waterpotential on seed longevity can be considered to be the samefor these and probably also for many other orthodox species. There are conflicting reports with regard to difference in effectsof day temperature (TD) and night temperatures (TN) on plantdevelopment. The objective of this study is to determine whetherthere are different effects ofTDandTNon development from sowingto flowering in rice (Oryza sativaL.). Plants of 24 rice cultivars were grown in naturally-lightedgrowth chambers at five diurnally constant (22, 24, 26, 28 and32 °C) and four diurnally fluctuating temperatures (26 /22,30 /22, 22 /26 and 22 /30 °C forTD/TNwith 12hd-1each) witha constant photoperiod of 12hd-1. The treatments were selectedto enable the separation of effects ofTDandTNon developmentrate (DR). The response of DR to constant temperatures was typically nonlinear. This nonlinearity could not explain the difference in floweringdates between fluctuating temperatures with the same mean dailyvalue but oppositeTD/TNdifferences. Differential effects ofTDandTNonDR to flowering were detected in all but one cultivar. In mostcases,TDexerted a greater influence thanTN, in contrast withmany previous reports based on the assumption of a linearitybetween DR and temperature. The data were further analysed bya nonlinear model which separated effects ofTDandTN. The estimatedvalue for the optimumTNwas generally 25 –29 °C, about2 –4 °C lower than the estimated optimumTDin mostcultivars. The effects ofTDandTNon DR were found to be interactivein some cultivars. These results form a new basis for modellingflowering dates in rice. Oryza sativa; rice; flowering; development; day and night temperature; thermoperiodicity  相似文献

Summary Proteins extracted from seed embryos of 29 different cultivated rice (Oryza sativa L.) and one wild rice (O. rufipogon Griff.) were compared by two-dimensional gel electrophoresis analysis. Among more than 300 protein spots on the gel we found some interesting variations in ten spots which were individually designated as proteins A-J. Protein E was observed in all indica cultivars but was not found in those of the subspecies japonica. In contrast, protein F was only detected in japonica cultivars. Protein A existed in all japonica cultivars but, with the exception of IR-36, could not be found in other indica cultivars. Therefore, proteins A, E and F can be used as markers for the identification of indica and japonica. Some so-called Javanica cultivars showed the characteristics of japonica subspecies with regard to proteins A and F, while one other cultivar of Javanica expressed a type intermediate between indica and japonica interms of proteins A and E. One feature discriminating between Javanica and japonica cultivars was found in the D, G, and J proteins which were expressed strongly in Javanica cultivars but were scarcely expressed in those of japonica. Expression of subspecies-specific proteins E and F in f1 hybrids was also investigated.  相似文献

Cloning and Mapping of Telomere-Associated Sequences from Rice   总被引:2,自引:0,他引:2
We have isolated three telomere-associated sequences from riceusing cassette-ligation-mediated polymerase chain reaction (PCR).Each of the obtained clones hybridized to the terminal of oneor several rice chromosome arms. The telomeres recognized bythe clones displayed a high level of polymorphism between tworice varieties, Nipponbare (a japonica variety) and Kasalath(an indica variety). Variability in the chromosome termini wasalso detected among individual F2 progeny plants, which werederived from a cross between the two rice varieties. One clonecontaining telomere-associated sequences was located to oneend of chromosome 5, and another clone to one end of chromosome11. For another clone, non-allelic segregation of polymorphichybridization bands was observed between japonica and indicarice; this clone was mapped to one end of chromosome 12 in japonicaand to one end of chromosome 11 in indica rice. This indicatesan exchange of termini between nonhomologous chromosomes.  相似文献

The characteristics of glutathione reductase from a number ofmaize cultivars with contrasting thermotolerance have been investigated. The apparent Km (Michaelis constant) for oxidised glutathione(GSSG) was measured between 10 and 45°C at constant pH.The enzyme from highland cultivars adapted to cool environmentshad a slightly lower apparent Km for GSSG than that from lowlandtropical cultivars at low assay temperatures. Similarly theenzyme from lowland tropical cultivars had a lower apparentKm for GSSG at high assay temperatures. However these effectswere small and regression lines plotted through the data werenot significantly different in slope or intercept. There wasa strong correlation (r = 0·939) between apparent Kmand Vmax (maximum initial velocity) as assay temperature wasvaried. The interpretation of apparent Km/temperature relationshipsis discussed with hypothetical examples of the effects of temperatureon enzyme activity/substrate concentration plots. It is demonstratedthat an increase in apparent Km at higher assay temperaturesneed not necessarily reflect any temperature-dependent impairmentof enzyme function. The apparent Km for GSSG of glutathionereductase from maize increased over four-fold when the temperaturewas raised from 10 to 45°C, but it is concluded that invivo rates of reaction are likely to be increased rather thandecreased by this same change in temperature. Glutathione reductasewould thus appear to be equally well adapted to function atall these temperatures. This suggests that the potential ofenzyme thermal kinetics to predict thermotolerance may be limited.Copyright1994, 1999 Academic Press Zea mays L., maize, glutathione reductase, thermal kinetics, thermotolerance  相似文献

A study was made of the incorporation of 14C by intact leavesof Coffea arabica (cultivars Mundo Novo, Catuai, 1130–13,and H 6586–2) and Coffea canephora (cultivar Guarini)supplied with gas mixtures containing 14CO2 under controlledconditions. Samples of the leaves were combusted and the 14Cin the CO2 produced measured using a liquid scintillation counter. The results were used to estimate photosynthetic rates. Theeffects of changing the partial pressures of O2 and CO2 on thephotosynthetic rate were studied and estimates made of the CO2compensation point and photorespiration. The data obtained show differences between the mean net photosyntheticrates of the C. arabica cultivars (6·14 mg CO2 dm–2h–1) and the mean rate for the C. canephora cultivar (3·96mg CO2 dm–2 h–1). The cultivar of the latter speciesphotorespired more rapidly than the cultivar Catuai of C. arabica.Rates of photosynthesis in coffee measured using the 14CO2 methodwere similar to rates obtained by others using an infrared gasanalyser. The 14CO2 method proved to be reliable for photosyntheticmeasurements and the apparatus is suitable for use in fieldconditions.  相似文献

This paper describes a fluorescence in situ hybridization (FISH) analysis of three different repetitive sequence families, which were mapped to mitotic metaphase chromosomes and extended DNA fibers (EDFs) of the two subspecies of rice (Oryza sativa), indica and japonica (2n=2x=24). The repeat families studied were (1) the tandem repeat sequence A (TrsA), a functionally non-significant repeat; (2) the [TTTAGGG]n telomere sequence, a non-transcribed, tandemly repeated but functionally significant repeat; and (3) the 5S ribosomal RNA (5S rDNA). FISH of the TrsA repeat to metaphase chromosomes of indica and japonica cultivars revealed clear signals at the distal ends of twelve and four chromosomes, respectively. As shown in a previous report, the 17S ribosomal RNA genes (17S rDNA) are located at the nucleolus organizers (NORs) on chromosomes 9 and 10 of the indica cultivar. However, the japonica rice lacked the rDNA signals on chromosome 10. The size of the 5S rDNA repeat block, which was mapped on the chromosome 11 of both cultivars, was 1.22 times larger in the indica than in the japonica genome. The telomeric repeat arrays at the distal ends of all chromosome arms were on average three times longer in the indica genome than in the japonica genome. Flow cytometric measurements revealed that the nuclear DNA content of indica rice is 9.7% higher than that of japonica rice. Our data suggest that different repetitive sequence families contribute significantly to the variation in genome size between indica and japonica rice, though to different extents. The increase or decrease in the copy number of several repetitive sequences examined here may indicate the existence of a directed change in genome size in rice. Possible reasons for this phenomenon of concurrent evolution of various repeat families are discussed. Received: 9 August 1999 / Accepted: 29 December 1999  相似文献

Photothermal Responses of Flowering in Rice (Oryza sativa)   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
Durations from sowing to panicle emergence in 16 diverse genotypesof rice (Oryza sativa L.) were recorded in 13 different photothermalregimes, comprising constant and diurnally alternating temperaturesbetween 16 and 32 °C and photoperiods between 10.5 and 15.0h d–1—all provided by controlled-environment growthcabinets. In 11.5 h days and at sub-optimal temperatures, relationsbetween the rate of progress towards panicle emergence and meantemperature were linear in all genotypes, and amongst thesethe base temperature at that photoperiod varied between 6.6and 11.9 °C. In most cases progress was most rapid at 24–26°C, i.e. the optimum temperature was much cooler than expectedfrom previously published values of times to panicle emergencein a less extensive range of photothermal regimes. Only in threecultivars was it warmer than 28 °C, and in these there weresufficient data to establish that relations between rates ofprogress to panicle emergence and photoperiod in the diurnallyalternating temperature regime of 28–20 °C are alsolinear. Also, the responses of these three cultivars provideno evidence of any interaction between the effects of photoperiodand temperature. We conclude, then, that the model in whichrate of development is a linear function of both temperatureand photoperiod with no interaction, which has been shown tobe common to many other species, also applies to rice. Differencesamong genotypes in relative sensitivity of rate of progresstowards panicle emergence to both temperature and to photoperiodwere considerable; japonica cultivars tended to be more sensitiveto temperature and less sensitive to photoperiod than indicacultivars. Four indica cultivars bred and selected at The InternationalRice Research Institute (IRRI) in the Philippines did not differ(P > 0.10) in their relations between rate of progress towardspanicle emergence and sub-optimal temperatures in a daylengthof 11.5 h, but the optimum temperature for cv. IR 36 was appreciablywarmer than that for the cvs IR 5, IR 8 and IR 42. Oryza sativa, rice, flowering, temperature, photoperiod, photothermal responses  相似文献

The cultivated rice (Oryza sativa L.) has two subspecies, indica and japonica. The japonica rice germplasm has a narrower genetic diversity compared to the indica subspecies. Rice breeders aim to develop new varieties with a higher yield potential, with enhanced resistances to biotic and abiotic stresses, and improved adaptation to environmental changes. In order to face some of these challenges, japonica rice germplasm will have to be diversified and new breeding strategies developed. Indica rice improvement could also profit from more “genepool mingling” for which japonica rice could play an important role. Interesting traits such as low-temperature tolerance, and wider climate adaptation could be introgressed into the indica subspecies. In the past decade, huge developments in rice genomics have expanded our available knowledge on this crop and it is now time to use these technologies for improving and accelerating rice breeding research. With the full sequence of the rice genome, breeders may take advantage of new genes. Also new genes may be discovered from the genepool of wild relatives, or landraces of the genus Oryza, and incorporated into elite japonica cultivars in a kind of “gene revolution” program. Expectedly, new technologies that are currently being optimized, aiming for novel gene discovery or for tracking the regions under selection, will be suggested as new breeding approaches. This paper revisits breeding strategies successfully employed in indica rice, and discusses their application in japonica rice improvement (e.g. ideotype breeding, wide hybridization and hybrid performance).  相似文献

The effects of different drying methods on desiccation toleranceand longevity in seeds of foxglove (Digitalis purpurea L.) wereassessed from just prior to mass maturity (when seeds have attainedmaximum dry weight), and at intervals during the post-abscissionphase of development. Tolerance of drying under seed conservationconditions (15% relative humidity, RH, and 15 °C), was acquiredclose to mass maturity at 36 d after flowering (DAF). Increasesin desiccation tolerance were induced when drying was delayedfor 4 d by placing seeds in a near-saturated atmosphere (approx.100% RH), or if seeds were pre-dried for 7 d at either approx.32% or approx. 73% RH. Irrespective of the drying treatment, seed longevity increasedthroughout the sampling period, i.e. beyond the point of massmaturity and throughout the post-abscission phase, up to thepoint of incipient natural dispersal. At each developmentalstage, delayed drying or pre-drying led to an increase in seedlongevity under controlled ageing conditions compared with seedsdried directly under seed conservation conditions. Increasesin longevity were apparent as increases in the estimates forthe intercept of transformed seed survival curves (Ki) and forthe standard deviation of the normal distribution of seed lifespans, and also in the mean time to death of individuals in storage, consistent with a continuation of ripening events. The results are discussed in relation to the assessment of seedlongevity and to current post-harvest drying practices for seedsintended for long-term ex-situ conservation.Copyright 1995,1999 Academic Press Digitalis purpurea L., foxglove, seed development, seed drying, seed longevity  相似文献

Despite extensive studies on cultivated rice, the genetic structure and subdivision of this crop remain unclear at both global and local scales. Using 84 nuclear simple sequence repeat markers, we genotyped a panel of 153 global rice cultivars covering all previously recognized groups and 826 cultivars representing the diversity of Chinese rice germplasm. On the basis of model-based grouping, neighbour-joining tree and principal coordinate analysis, we confirmed the widely accepted five major groups of rice cultivars (indica, aus, aromatic, temperate japonica and tropical japonica), and demonstrated that rayada rice was unique in genealogy and should be treated as a new (the sixth) major group of rice germplasm. With reference to the global classification of rice cultivars, we identified three major groups (indica, temperate japonica and tropical japonica) in Chinese rice germplasm and showed that Chinese temperate japonica contained higher diversity than that of global samples, whereas Chinese indica and tropical japonica maintained slightly lower diversity than that present in the global samples. Particularly, we observed that all seasonal, drought-tolerant and endosperm types occurred within each of three major groups of Chinese cultivars, which does not support previous claims that seasonal differentiation exists in Indica and drought-tolerant differentiation is present in Japonica. It is most likely that differentiation of cultivar types arose multiple times stemming from artificial selection for adaptation to local environments.  相似文献
