This little known ursid has a brain that shows very progressive encephalization and neocorticalization, reminiscent of the giant panda's. But, somewhat paradoxically, it is also characterized by proportionately large rhinencephalon and brain stem, and relatively small striatum. This quantitative study suggests a general contrast between Asian and American bears. It invites further comparative investigations of the brain in all ursiform mammals, as an especially promising material from combined evolutionary and neuroethological standpoints.  相似文献

Fecal steroid analyses were conducted on captive (n = 10) and free-ranging (n = 2) sun bears (Helarctos malayanus) in order to establish a noninvasive technique for monitoring endocrine profiles during the estrous cycle and pregnancy. Secondly, the effect of the contraceptive porcine zona pellucida protein (PZP) on reproductive function was studied. Finally, we investigated whether the sun bear, naturally living in the aseasonal tropical forests of Southeast Asia, is a seasonal breeder. Fecal samples were collected over periods of 7-48 months in captive untreated (n = 8) and PZP-treated (n = 2) female sun bears. In addition samples were collected over a period of 12 months from radio-collared free-ranging females (n = 2) in their natural habitat in Indonesian Borneo. Androgens, precursors of estrogens, were found to be reliable indicators of the follicular phase, whereas estrogens were found unsuitable. Pregnanediol assay was found to be a reliable indicator of luteal function. Results indicate that sun bears are polyestrous, nonseasonal breeders. Interestrus intervals in nonpregnant animals (n = 2), which were monitored for 27 months, were between 140 and 216 days. Luteal phases (89.6 +/- 3.7 days; n = 9) were preceded by androgen peaks of 15.2 +/- 1.0 days (n = 10). Hormonal profiles of two females treated with PZP indicated missing ovarian activity in one, and persistent follicular and luteal activity in another animal. However, extended periods of missing ovarian, and persistent follicular and luteal activity were also observed in other sun bears studied.  相似文献

Thermoregulation in Malayan sun bears is not fully understood. Therefore, in this study the effect of meteorological variables on both behavioural and autonomic thermoregulatory mechanisms in sun bears was examined in order to identify temperature thresholds for the activation of various thermoregulatory mechanisms. Infrared thermography was used to non‒invasively determine body surface temperature (TS) distribution in relation to ambient temperature (TA) and to determine the thermoneutral zone (TNZ) of sun bears. Thermographic measurements were performed on 10 adult sun bears at TA between 5 °C and 30 °C in three European zoos. To assess behaviours that contribute to thermoregulation, nine adult sun bears were observed at TA ranging from 5 °C to 34 °C by instantaneous scan sampling in 60 s intervals for a total of 787 h. Thermographic measurements revealed that the TNZ of sun bears lies between 24 °C and 28 °C and that heat is equally dissipated over the body surface. Behavioural data showed that behaviours related to thermoregulation occurred in advance of energetically costly autonomic mechanisms, and were highly correlated with TA and solar radiation. While the temperature threshold for the onset of thermoregulatory behaviours below the TNZ lies around 15 °C, which is well below the lower critical temperature (TLC) assessed by thermography, the onset for behaviours to prevent overheating occurred at 28 °C, which was closer to the estimated upper critical temperature (TUC) of sun bears. These findings provide useful data on the thermal requirements of sun bears with respect to the species potential to cope with the effects of climate change and deforestation which are occurring in their natural range. Furthermore, these results may have important implications for the care and welfare of bears in captivity and should be taken into consideration, when designing and managing facilities.  相似文献

The complete primary structure of the alpha- and beta-chains of the hemoglobin of Spectacled Bear (Tremarctos ornatus) is presented. Following cleavage of the heme-protein link and chain separation by RP-HPLC, their amino-acid sequences were determined by Edman degradation in liquid- and gas-phase sequenators. The hemoglobin of Spectacled Bear displays only five amino-acid exchanges to that of Polar Bear (Ursus maritimus, Ursinae) and Asiatic Black Bear (Ursus tibetanus, Ursinae) whereas 8 and 12 replacements, respectively, to Giant Panda (Ailuropoda melanoleuca) and Lesser Panda (Ailurus fulgens) can be found. This clearly demonstrates that the Spectacled Bear, the most aberrant bear of the Ursidae, is somewhat intermediate between Pandas and Ursinae.  相似文献

The adult Polar and Asiatic Black Bear have one hemoglobin component each. The complete amino-acid sequences of their alpha- and beta-chains are presented. Their primary structures were determined by sequencing the tryptic and prolyl peptides. The alignment of these peptides was deduced from homology to human hemoglobin chains. The hemoglobin sequences of the two species proved to be identical. The evolutionary aspects of this result are discussed. A table of identical hemoglobin sequences from different species is given.  相似文献

One of the available tools for mapping the geographical distribution and potential suitable habitats is species distribution models. These techniques are very helpful for finding poorly known distributions of species in poorly sampled areas, such as the tropics. Maximum Entropy (MaxEnt) is a recently developed modeling method that can be successfully calibrated using a relatively small number of records. In this research, the MaxEnt model was applied to describe the distribution and identify the key factors shaping the potential distribution of the vulnerable Malayan Sun Bear (Helarctos malayanus) in one of the main remaining habitats in Peninsular Malaysia. MaxEnt results showed that even though Malaysian sun bear habitat is tied with tropical evergreen forests, it lives in a marginal threshold of bio-climatic variables. On the other hand, current protected area networks within Peninsular Malaysia do not cover most of the sun bears potential suitable habitats. Assuming that the predicted suitability map covers sun bears actual distribution, future climate change, forest degradation and illegal hunting could potentially severely affect the sun bear’s population.  相似文献

The hemoglobin of Weddell Seal (Leptonychotes weddelli, Pinnipedia) comprises two components with identical beta-chains. The alpha-chains differ in positions 15 (Gly/Asp) and 57 (Ala/Thr). We present the primary structure of the chains which have been separated by reversed-phase high-performance liquid chromatography. The sequences have been determined by automatic Edman-degradation with the film-technique or the gas-phase method, using the native chains and the tryptic peptides of the oxidized chains. Compared to the corresponding human chains we found 22 substitutions in the alpha-chains and 14 in the beta-chains. In the alpha-chains exchanges involve one heme- and three alpha 1/beta 1-contacts. In the beta-chains one heme contact, one alpha 1/beta 1- and one alpha 1/beta 2-contacts are substituted. The sequences are compared to those of other Pinnipedia and Arctoidea hemoglobins.  相似文献

Sun bear ( Helarctos malayanus ) frugivory and fruiting phenology was investigated in a lowland dipterocarp forest in East Kalimantan, Indonesia. Two mast fruiting events, both coinciding with El Niño/Southern Oscillation events, occurred 4 years apart, resulting in large fluctuations in fruit availability. Sun bear fruit availability decreased from 13 trees ha−1 fruiting month−1 during the mast fruiting to 1.6 trees ha−1 fruiting month−1 during the intermast period. Almost 100% of sun bear diet consisted of fruit during mast fruiting period, whereas sun bear diet was predominantly insectivorous during intermast periods. The majority of sun bear fruit trees displayed 'mast-fruiting' and 'supra-annual' fruiting patterns, indicating sporadic productivity. Sun bears fed on 115 fruit species covering 54 genera and 30 families, with Ficus (Moraceae) being the main fallback fruit. The families Moraceae, Burseraceae, and Myrtaceae contributed more than 50% to the sun bear fruit diet. Sun bear fruit feeding observations were unevenly distributed over forest types with more observations in high-dry forest type despite fewer fruiting events, possibly due to a side-effect of high insect abundance that causes bears to use these areas more intensively. The primary structures of alpha- and beta-chains from the hemoglobin of the Beach Marten (Martes foina, Carnivora) are presented. The globin chains were separated on CM-cellulose in 8M urea buffer. The amino-acid sequences were established by automatic liquid- and gas-phase Edman degradation of the intact chains and the tryptic peptides from oxidized chains. Comparison of the sequences with human hemoglobin shows 21 exchanges in the alpha- and 12 in the beta-chains. The differences concerning heme and interchain contact sites as well as the substitution alpha 77 (EF6)Pro----Ala are discussed. The latter is observed for the first time in a mammalian hemoglobin. The sequences are compared with those of other Carnivora. The beta-chains of Martes foina and Pteronura brasiliensis (Giant Otter) are found to be identical, but their alpha-chains differ in 7 positions. The surprising small numbers of exchanges between the hemoglobin from Beach marten and that from Lesser and Greater Panda are discussed.  相似文献

The alpha-chains show 18 and the beta-chains 13 substitutions compared to human alpha- and beta-chains, respectively. In the alpha-chains one heme- and two alpha 1/beta 1-contacts are exchanged. In the beta-chains the replacements involve one heme-, one alpha 1/beta 1-, and one alpha 1/beta 2-contact. The alpha- and beta-chains of the Common Otter are compared to those of other Carnivora hemoglobins. The primary structure of the alpha- and beta-chains of hemoglobin from spotted hyena (Crocuta crocuta, Hyenidae) is presented. The structure-function relationship is discussed. The separation of the chains directly from hemoglobin was performed by RP-HPLC. After tryptic digestion of the chains, the peptides were isolated by RP-HPLC. Amino-acid sequences were determined by Edman degradation in liquid- and gas-phase sequencers. The alignment of the tryptic peptides was made by homology with human and other Carnivora hemoglobins. The hemoglobin from spotted hyena (Crocuta crocuta) exhibits in its alpha- and beta-chains 22 and 20 exchanges, respectively, compared to human hemoglobin. In the alpha-chains, two alpha 1 beta 1-contacts are exchanged. In the beta-chains five exchanges involve one alpha 1 beta 1-contact, one alpha 1 beta 2-contact, one heme contact, and two 2,3-DPG-binding sites.  相似文献

The primary structure of the alpha- and beta-chains of the hemoglobin from the Pacific Walrus (Odobenus rosmarus divergens, Pinnipedia) is presented. Sequence analysis revealed only one hemoglobin component whereas two bands were found in polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis. The globin chains were separated by high-performance liquid chromatography and the sequences determined by automatic liquid- and gas-phase sequencing of the chains and their tryptic peptides. The alpha-chains show 20 and the beta-chains 12 exchanges compared to the corresponding human chains. In the alpha-chains one heme- and two alpha 1/beta 1-contacts were exchanged whereas in the beta-chains one alpha 1/beta 1-, one alpha 1/beta 2-and one heme-contact are substituted. Compared to Harbour Seal (Phoca vitulina) the Walrus hemoglobin shows 9 amino-acid replacements in the alpha-chains and 5 in the beta-chains. The primary structure of the alpha- and beta-chains of hemoglobin from the Masked Palm Civet (Paguma larvata, Viverridae) is described. The chains were separated directly from hemoglobin by RP-HPLC. After tryptic digestion of the chains, the peptides were separated by RP-HPLC. Amino acid sequences were determined by Edman degradation in liquid and gas-phase sequencers. The alignment of the tryptic peptides was made by homology with human and other Carnivora hemoglobins. Paguma and human hemoglobin differ with respect to 23 amino-acid residues. Some of these amino-acid substitutions, which occur in both the alpha- and beta-chains, occur at contact sites between the subunits, and at the binding sites of heme and of organic phosphate, as well as involving residues responsible for the alkaline Bohr effect.  相似文献
