Further cytogenetic analyses of the Croatian triploid shallot “Ljutika” (Allium cepa var.viviparum, Alliaceae) and its comparison with the Indian triploid “Pran”

Feulgen and silver-stained karyotypes and meiosis of two triploid viviparous onion forms (Allium cepa var.viviparum), the Croatian Ljutika and the Indian Pran, were comparatively analyzed. The results of chromosome measurements show that Ljutika and Pran are karyologically not identical, although significant similarities were found in the morphology of their chromosomes. Five geographically distant clones of Ljutika showed good agreement in the number and gross morphology of the chromosomes and in the number and position of NORs and interphase nucleoli. Heterotrivalents were predominant in meiosis of Ljutika but a relatively high frequency of higher multivalents together with univalents and bivalents were also observed. The relationship between Ljutika and Pran and their possible origin are discussed.     

Microaerophily

Objections to previous definitions of anaerobiosis and micro-aerophily are discussed, and a new definition of micro-aerophily is proposed. A survey of physiological characteristics of the micro-aerophilic bacterium Campylobacter sputorum spp. bubulus is given, and the concept of micro-aerophily is illustrated by the results of a study on the oxygen metabolism and oxygen sensitivity of this bacterium.     

The adaptive significance of cultural behavior: Comments and reply

Summary Fundamentally, theoretically, there is only one process underlying genetic and cultural evolution: natural selection. Organism fitness-enhancement (adaptive significance) is one of its practical mechanisms; group formation and maintenance is another, often but not always through fitness-enhancement; and need-fulfillment is still another. If Durham can accept that formulation, and switch from organism-thinking to instruction-thinking (Cloak, 1975: 178), he will free himself from two handicaps: First, he can forget his worries about reductionism and determinism (1976a: 100, 101). Under this general theory of natural selection, cultural evolutionis biological evolution, continued by other (nongenetic) means. Second, he will spare himself the appearance of anthropomorphism, mentalism, and wishy-washiness attendant on his discussion of kinds of significance, other than adaptive significance, of cultural behaviors (1976a: 102–106, 115).     

Observations on the fine structure of the cercaria of Notocotylus attenuatus and formation of the cyst wall of the metacercaria

Summary The dorsal tegument of the mature cercaria of Notocotylus attenuatus is a syncytial, cytoplasmic layer, containing two types of secretory granule which are identifiable ultrastructurally. The type 1 secretory bodies are electron lucid, whereas most type 2 granules have a banded appearance. The ventral tegument contains granules which are secreted from the type 3 cells; the type 3 granules are membrane bound, electron dense, and consist of both an amorphous and a finely striated zone. The type 4 cells mainly contain cigar-shaped granules consisting of an amorphous core surrounded by concentric striations. The granules exhibit structural variability in shape and content. The type 4 cells undergo a cellular migration to the tegument during encystment. The structure of the posterior-lateral glands and mode of secretion of the granules are described. Possible functions of microtubules are discussed for each cell type. Details of some secretory processes involved in the formation of the hemispherical cyst wall are described. The layers of the cyst wall may be related to the granular contents of the various parenchymal cells of the cercaria. The tegument of the metacercaria originates primarily from the cytoplasm of the type 1, type 2, type 3 and type 4 cells.     

Injury to potato leaves exposed to subzero temperatures in the absence of freezing

Electrolyte leakage was measured in hardened and nonhardened leaves of three potato species, Solanum tuberosum L., S. acaule Bitt. and S. commersonii Dun., and one interspecific cross, Alaska Frostless (S. acaule x S. tuberosum) when exposed to various subzero temperatures. The leaves were undercooled (no ice present) from 0°C to -12.5°C for 45 min and to-4°C for up to 10 d. Regardless of the degree of undercooling no injury was observed in any of the potatoes, hardened or nonhardened, for up to 12 h. After 5 d, however, electrolyte leakage was observed in hardened S. tuberosum, S. acaule and S. commersonii, and in nonhardened Alaska Frostless. After 10 d exposure all potatoes, hardened and nonhardened, showed a significant amount of electrolyte leakage as compared to their controls kept at 0°C for 10 d.Scientific Journal Series Paper No. 13842 of the Minnesota Agricultural Experiment Station, St. Paul, Minn     

Interchange-trisomics in barley

Observations on morphology, sterility and cytology of some interchangetrisomics obtained from the progeny of radiation induced interchangeheterozygotes in a 6-rowed barley (Hordeum vulgare L.) var. K₁₂ are described. The different interchange trisomics show distinct phenotypic expression and have been classified as bushy, slender, robust, semi-erect and pseudonormal on the basis of their gross morphology, leaf characteristics, awn and spike lengths. All interchange trisomics show pollen and ovule sterility which varies between plants. Meiotic behaviour is described. The five different interchange trisomics appear to have different extra chromosomes.     

Heterochromatin variation in Cryptobothrus chrysophorus

Northern and southern races of the Australian grasshopper Cryptobothrus chrysophorus share the same diploid chromosome number (2n=23, 24). The northern race is differentiated from the southern by fixed extra blocks of heterochromatin located distally on five of the six medium pairs of autosomes (M4, 5, 6, 8 and 9). The megameric M7 pair, which is completely heterochromatic in both races, is also frequently larger in the northern race. Additionally, while there is considerable polymorphism for the presence of supernumerary heterochromatic segments on the two smallest autosome pairs (S10, 11) in both races, the precise character of this polymorphism is strikingly different between them. That found in the north is both more extensive and more variable. An analysis of the patterns of C-banding obtained in neuroblast c-mitoses indicates even more variation within and between races than was anticipated from the patterns of heteropycnosis seen at first prophase of male meiosis. Thus, while the distal blocks on the M4, 6, 8 and 9 elements in the northern race invariably C-band those of the M5 never do. On the other hand polymorphisms for C-bands on the M5, 6, 8 and 9 are seen in some populations of the southern race but in regions which are not visibly heteropycnotic at meiosis. Polymorphisms for the pattern of C-banding also occur in the northern race populations in the M4, 6, 8 and 9 elements and some of these are associated with clear length differences in the chromosomes concerned. Others involve differences in the expression of the distal C-bands in M8 and 9 which vary from dark to intermediate. The supernumerary segments on the S10 and 11 pairs are especially variable in respect of their C-banding properties. Some are entirely C-banded, some show no C-banding whatsoever and some are composed of both banded and unhanded regions. Banding is again most pronounced, however, in the northern race. Finally the character of the megameric M7 is strikingly different in the two races not only in respect of its size, which is sometimes larger than that of the south, but also in respect of the extent of C-banding which is always more complex in the northern form irrespective of its size.     

Polygonal inequalities as a key to neuronic equations

Neuronic or decision equations, first proposed as a mathematical model of neural activity, have shown, after their exact, compact solution was found, typical behaviours that make them natural tools for General Systems studies. It is shown here that their mathematical investigation is remarkably furthered by generalizing the triangular inequality to polygonal ones. These permit the immediate computation of the tensorial expansion of linearly separable boolean functions, and exhibit clearly the connection between their continuous and discontinuous aspects.     

Studies on aneuploids of Petunia

Summary The seven possible primary trisomics of Petunia (2 n= 14) located in the progenies of triploid, hypertriploid and hypotriploid plants were distinguished from one another and from diploid on the basis of cytological and morphological criteria. They were provisionally named as Oval, Semi, Slender, Pseudonormal, Arrow, Narrow and Giant. In three of the trisomics, the extra chromosome was identified for the first time at pachytene stage. Postpachytene studies revealed no precise relationship between the length of extra chromosome and the frequency of multiple association.     

Dream Bizarreness and Inner Thought

The paper offers a critique of bizarreness studies that compare dreams to real world probability ratios and directed thought processes as a basis for determining the degree of bizarreness in dreams. It examines two cases from the literature and suggests that dreams are better compared to non-directed, or imaginative waking thought processes, specifically Inner Thought and Speech (or speech for oneself, in Lev Vygotsky's definition), in which associative mechanisms operate freely hand in hand with (primarily) visual imagery before logical thought mechanisms come into play. The article suggests that dreams create a world order, or umwelt, with its own distinct cognitive domain in which waking considerations of efficiency, logic, and common sense are only thematically relevant. Dreams follow their own logic and can only be approached as thought-in-progress, or a search for coherence leading up many blind alleys. Finally, the relevance to dreams of the Inner Thought principle of predication, or abbreviation is examined.     

Protoplasmic streaming in the giant unicellular green algaAcetabularia mediterranea

Summary Protoplasmic Streaming inAcetabularia mediteranea has been studied by microcinematography in 1. germinating zygotes, 2. germlings before the differentiation of rhizoids and apices, 3. young cells with rhizoids and apices, 4. vegetative cells-several centimeters in length, 5. cells with a maximum sized cap, containing secondary nuclei, and 6. cells after cyst formation. Intracellular transport is found to occur at a network-system of thin filaments and at a different system of headed streaming bands. At the network of filaments chloroplasts are found to move at a velocity of 1–2 m/sec. Headed streaming bands move along the filaments and may lead without interruption from the rhizoid to the apex of the cell andvice versa. The front zone of the streaming bands is occupied by a leading cytoplasmic head-structure. Small vesicles, polyphosphate granula and secondary nuclei are the predominant moving structures in headed streaming bands. The velocity of these particles is found to be 3–11 m/sec. The filament system is found during all developmental stages. Headed streaming bands are undetectable in germinating zygotes and develop from small cytoplasmic droplets in germlings to broad heavily loaded bands in the huge vegetative cell.Transport of secondary nuclei by headed streaming bands is not observed during mitotic divisions and after cyst formation, though moving bands are still present for several weeks after cyst formation.     

Biofeedback-assisted relaxation: Effects on phagocytic capacity

The purpose of this study was to investigate whether subjects who self-report high levels of stress have lower immunity, and whether low-immunity subjects under high stress could enhance phagocytic activity through biofeedback-assisted relaxation (BAR). During Phase 1, the level of stress and the level of phagocytic immune functioning (nitroblue tetrazolium test) were assessed as high or low. Significant chi-square analysis (x²=3.8624, df=1, p<.05) showed that subjects with high stress had low immunity. Sixteen high-stress, low-immunity subjects were randomly assigned to BAR and control groups during Phase 2. Following treatment, NBT changes showed significant increases (F=11.11, p<.003) for experimental group as compared to control group. White blood cell count and white blood cell differential were unchanged across blood samples for both groups. Experimental subjects reported significant decreases in tension-anxiety and increases in overall coping. BAR was concluded to have improved coping skills and phagocytic capacity. BAR affected the quality, rather than the quantity, of phagocytic neutrophils.     

Movements and diurnal behaviour patterns in a Baltic grey seal (Halichoerus grypus)

A sub-adult grey seal was caught and tagged with a satellite relay data logger at Tihällan (61°2800N, 17°2540E), Sweden, on 21 August 1992. We tracked it for 115 days during which time we recorded 841 locations, data on 3556 dives and 80 haulout periods. It travelled 730 km in the first 12 days to the southern Archipelago Sea. It stayed most of the remaining time within 25 km of a haulout site, with a major exception of an 8-day trip of 520 km. Dive shape and swimming activity were used to distinguish dive types. Square-shaped foraging dives were more common over the midday period. Haulout periods were more common during the night.     

Structure of the parathyroid glands,as revealed by different methods of fixation

Summary Stereology and semi-automatic image analysis were used with the aim of comparing the structure of parathyroid glands from untreated adult Mongolian gerbils fixed by immersion with those fixed by perfusion. Subclassification of the chief cells based upon the staining affinity or electron density of the cytoplasm was readily performed only in glands fixed by immersion, and so-called atrophic cells were observed only in these glands. The atrophic cells were often surrounded by light chief cells. In glands fixed by perfusion, light chief cells were only rarely encountered. A significant difference between glands fixed by immersion and those fixed by perfusion was found only with regard to the form of cells and nuclei, those fixed by perfusion being more spherical. When comparing individual cells within glands fixed by immersion, light chief cells were more spherical and had a significantly larger nuclear and cellular size, and a lower mitochondrial volume density than the intermediate/dark chief cells. Otherwise there were no significant differences in any of the parameters investigated. These data indicate that occurrence of socalled light chief cells and atrophic cells is a result of improper fixation. The results of this study do not favour the concept of a functional cycle with a simultaneous occurrence of active and inactive cells within parathyroid glands.     

Effect of androgens on histochemical fibre type

Summary The temporal muscles of the guinea pig show a sexual differentiation reflected in their histochemical enzyme pattern. Using histochemical methods for mitochondrial (SDH, -GPDH), and glycolytic enzymes (phosphorylase, LDH) it could be shown, that in adult animals the male muscle is a white muscle with marked activity of glycolytic enzymes, the female muscle a red muscle displaying high activity of mitochondrial enzymes. This differential enzyme pattern can be converted by the application of testosterone to the female type during the postnatal development. The male sex hormone thus affects the histochemical enzyme pattern of the muscle, converting the red, female into a white, male muscle in the female guinea pig.     

Die Hypokotylfarbe als Markierungsfaktor von Genomstufen der Zuckerrübe

Zusammenfassung In zunehmendem Maße werden anisoploideBeta-Rübensorten angebaut, deren zytologische Kontrolle zwecks Feststellung der Genomstufenprozentanteile recht arbeitszeitaufwendig ist. Übereinstimmend mit polnischen Autoren wurde festgestellt, daß die Hypokotylfarbe ein geeigneter Markierungsfaktor für die einzelnen Genomstufen darstellt. Kreuzt man tetraploide Pflanzen, die ein grünes Hypokotyl besitzen, mit diploiden Pflanzen, die ein rosa Hypokotyl aufweisen, so erhält man von dem tetraploiden Partner tetraploide grüne und triploide hellbraune, von dem diploiden Partner diploide rosa und triploide hellbraune Nachkommenschaften. Die in bezug auf die Hypokotylfarbe heterozygoten Pflanzen kann man demnach von den homozygot grünen und homozygot rosa Individuen unterscheiden. Die Kreuzung diploid grünxtetraploid rosa ist für diese Zwecke nicht brauchbar, da sich die triploiden Heterozygoten mit einem grünen und zwei rosa Allelen in der Hypokotylfarbe nicht deutlich von den homozygoten rosa Pflanzen abheben. Auf die Bedeutung dieser Markierungsmöglichkeit für bestimmte Forschungsprobleme, die Züchtung und die Saatgutkontrolle wird hingewiesen.     

'Eloquent Chaos' in the Oral Discourse of Killing Fields Survivors: An Exploration of Atrocity and Narrativization

If narrative implies a form of discourse in which sequencedevents are meaningfully connected, an anti-narrative is achaotic discourse form of time without sequence, telling withoutmediation, and speaking about oneself without being fully able toreflect on oneself (Frank 1995: 98). This paper examinesnarratives and anti-narratives in the oral discourses ofsurvivors of the Cambodian killing fields. Through an extendedanalysis of two cases, we demonstrate the internal logic and eloquence of anti-narratives – i.e., the ways in whichanti-narrative patterns vividly express and reveal a survivor'scomplex and continuing experience of atrocity.     

The effect of intracapillary media feed protocols on hollow fiber cell culture

Summary Two intracapillary (IC) media feed protocols termed media rich and media lean were examined in an effort to understand the effect of this variable on hollow fiber cell cultures. The media rich protocol emphasized a high volume IC media per day (5 liters) containing no serum and a normal amount of extracapillary (EC) media serum (10% v/v). Alternatively, the media lean protocol used up to 1.0 liter of IC media per day containing 5% v/v serum and increased EC media serum (20% v/v). Both protocols produced substantial amounts of antibody in 25 days using HFN7.1 hybridoma cells (ATCC CRL 1606), however the media rich protocol produced twice as much antibody as the media lean protocol. The metabolism of the cells was dramatically different as measured by glucose uptake rate (GUR) with media lean cells having a six-fold lower GUR. Our results indicate that the media rich protocol is useful for producing larger amounts of antibody in a short time frame. The media lean protocol may be considered when the production costs of antibody, particularly media and serum, is the overriding concern.     

On the sufficiency of the velocity field for perception of heading

All models of self-motion from optical flow assume the instantaneous velocity field as input. We tested this assumption for human observers using random-dot displays that simulated translational and circular paths of movement by manipulating the lifetime and displacement of individual dots. For translational movement, observers were equally accurate in judging direction of heading from a velocity field with a two-frame dot life and a direction field in which the magnitudes of displacement were randomized while the radial pattern of directions was preserved, but at chance with a speed field in which the directions were randomized, preserving only magnitude. Accuracy declined with increasing noise in vector directions, but remained below 2.6° with a 90° noise envelope. Thus, the visual system uses the radial morphology of vector directions to determine translational heading and can tolerate large amounts of noise in this pattern. For circular movement, observers were equally accurate with a 2-frame velocity field, 3-frame acceleration displays, and 2-frame and 3-frame direction fields, consistent with the use of the pattern of vector directions to locate the center of rotation. The results indicate that successive independent velocity fields are sufficient for perception of translational and circular heading.     

Concluding remarks

On the basis of symposium contributions onChlorella, Hibbertia, Eucalyptus, Ambrosia and on numerical approaches some fundamental problems of (bio)systematics, evolution, and taxonomic categories are discussed: Methods available for analysing affinities; conflicting evidence from phenetic, biochemical, cytogenetic and other analyses; further classification problems in cases of intermediacy, etc. While sibs of various levels and their natural hierarchy often can be objectively defined, this appears impossible for particular taxonomic levels itself (e. g. species). A single objective taxonomic system of organisms is unrealistic. Certain guiding lines for relative and practicable concepts of species and genus are proposed.Presented at the symposium Speciation and the Species Concept during the XIIth International Botanical Congress, Leningrad, July 8, 1975.
