A survey of 77 individuals covering the range of Mus macedonicus from Georgia in the East to Greece and Bulgaria in the West and Israel in the South has shown the existence of two deeply divergent mitochondrial clades. The southern clade was until now undetected and characterises mice from Israel. Nuclear genes also show some amount of regional differentiation tending to separate the southern M. macedonicus from the northern ones. These results point towards the fact that the eastern Mediterranean short-tailed mouse, which was seen as a fairly homogeneous monotypic species, has in fact a more complex phylogeographic history than has been suspected, and that it warrants the existence of two subspecies. The reasons for this non-uniformity probably ought to be looked for in the history of faunal movements linked to glacial periods, underlining the possible existence of at least two refugia south of the Caucasus.  相似文献

Comparative physiology is an important tool for understanding adaptation to environment. Regulatory nonshivering thermogenesis (NST) is an essential mechanism in small mammals for coping with low ambient temperatures. Because of its geographical location and its sharp climatic changes across short distances, Israel offers conducting comparative studies between different populations of the same species. The aims of this study were: (1) to compare NST-capacity daily rhythms, between the two populations of the broad-toothed field mouse Apodemus Mystacinus—that of Mount Carmel (Mediterranean) and that of Mount Hermon (Subalpinic), (2) to compare the thermoregulatory daily rhythms response to photoperiod manipulations of mice from the two populations.

Mice were acclimated for at least 3 weeks to long scotophase (16D:8L-LS) and then to long photophase (16L:8D-LP) at a constant ambient temperature (Ta) of 24±1 °C. The following variables were compared at four different times of the day (06, 12, 18, 24 h): minimal body temperature (TbMin), minimal oxygen consumption (VO2Min) measured at the lower critical point and their response to noradrenaline (NA), 1.5 mg/1 kg.Wb injected s.c., (VO2NA and TbNA). NST-capacity was calculated as the ratio between VO2NA and VO2Min. The measurements were carried out at Ta of 28 °C and in light conditions matching those of acclimation. NA was injected after establishing VO2Min and TbMin. The values mean±SD are given for each measurement for n=6.

A three-way ANOVA revealed a significant difference between the two populations. Significant differences were revealed at different hours within populations under the different photoperiod regimes for different measured variables.  相似文献

1 The RAPD method (Random Amplified Polymorphic DNA) was used to investigate genetic diversity of the green spruce aphid, Elatobium abietinum Walker, a pest introduced recently to Iceland. 2 This aphid in Iceland comprised two polymorphic populations, one in the east and the other in the west of the country. The genetic variation between sites within a population was continuous and appeared to be in good agreement with geographical distances. 3 In the eastern population the variation was greater between sites than within sites, whereas in the western population the pattern of variation appeared to be the opposite. This overall greater genetic variation in the eastern population could be due to its having been colonized earlier than the western one. 4 The study also demonstrated a close relationship between the green spruce aphid in Iceland and aphids from Denmark, which agrees with their assumed origin. The differences in introduction time, adaptation and competitiveness between the two Icelandic populations are discussed.  相似文献

Summary The pancreatic islet in the mouse has a highly complex and heterogeneous structure. It contains Aa, Ab, Ac, B, C, D, E, and F cells. The classification of cell types is primarily based on the shape, size and electron opacity of secretory granules and on the spatial relationship of the granules to their unit membranes. Morphological evidence is supported by a statistical analysis of the size distribution of granules and of their membranes. Experimental immunization of mice with insulin, provides additional data to support the existence of eight different cell types in the islet of the normal animal and reveales marked immunological stimulation of B cells, secondary stimulation of Aa, D and F cells, atrophy of Ac cells and hyperplasia of C cells. It is proposed that corresponding cell types exist in other mammals and man. The experimental insulin immunization process appears to perform an immunofunctional analysis of the islet, and suggests that in mice the Aa, D and F cells might be involved in cell energy supply. Lipocaic and some pancreatic factors with insulin-like activity (NSILA) will likely find their morphological equivalents. It is proposed that chemical solubility techniques represent the most promising avenues of approach to the isolation of secretory products from the endocrine pancreas, and that the assay of these extracts should primarily be conducted at the cell level.Dedicated to Prof. Dr. med. Ten women [mean maximal O2 uptake (VO2max), 2.81 l X min-1] exercised for 15 min on a cycle ergometer in the middle of the luteal phase (L) and in the early follicular phase (F) of the menstrual cycle at the same constant work rates (mean 122 W) and an ambient temperature of 18 degrees C. Serum progesterone averaged 44.7 nmol X l-1 in L and 0.7 nmol X l-1 in F. After a 4-h resting period, exercise was performed between 3 and 4 A.M., when the L-F core temperature difference is maximal. Preexercise esophageal (Tes), tympanic (Tty), and rectal (Tre) temperatures averaged 0.6 degrees C higher in L. During exercise Tes, Tty, and Tre averaged 0.5 degrees C higher. The thresholds for chest sweating and cutaneous vasodilation (heat clearance technique) at the thumb and forearm were elevated in L by an average of 0.47 degrees C, related to mean body temperature (Tb(es) = 0.87Tes + 0.13Tskin), Tes, Tty, or Tre. The above-threshold chest sweat rate and cutaneous heat clearances were also increased in L. The mean exercise heart rate was 170.0 beats X min-1 in L and 163.8 beats X min-1 in F. The mean exercise VO2 in L (2.21 l X min-1) was 5.2% higher than in F (2.10 l X min-1), the metabolic rate was increased in L by 5.6%, but the net efficiency was 5.3% lower. 1. 1. The thermoregulatory responses to manipulations of photoperiod in wood mice (Apodemus sylvaticus), which were drawn from a population living at a high latitude (57°N) were studied.
2. 2. Mice captured in spring were acclimated to two different photoperiod regimes 16L:8D and 8L:16D at a constant ambient temperature of 24°C, for 3 weeks.
3. 3. Daily rhythms of body temperature, oxygen consumption and body temperature at various ambient temperatures, nonshivering thermogenesis (the response to a noradrenaline injection) and body mass were measured. Minimal overall thermal conductance was calculated for both groups.
4. 4. Acclimation to long photophase increased the thermoregulatory abilities at relatively high ambient temperatures while that of long-scotophase increased thermoregulatory abilities at low ambient temperatures.
5. 5. Changes in photoperiod may therefore be used as cues for seasonal acclimatization of thermoregulatory mechanisms in this population of wood mice.

Energy cost is a major factor influencing the tolerable thermal load, particularly during exercise in the heat. However, no data exist on the metabolic cost of football practice, although a value of 35% of maximal aerobic capacity (VO(2)max) has been estimated. The energy cost and thermoregulatory response of offensive linemen (OL) was measured wearing different American football ensembles during a simulated half of football practice in the heat. Five collegiate offensive linemen (133 kg, 20% fat, 42 ml x kg(-1) x min(-1) maximal oxygen uptake) completed each of four 60-minute test sessions in an environmental chamber (28 degrees C, 55% relative humidity [RH]) wearing shorts (S), helmet (H), helmet and shoulder pads (HS), and full gear (FUL). Core temperature in the digestive tract (TGI) was obtained using an ingestible sensor. During simulated football drills (e.g., repetitions of drive blocking), exercise intensity ranged from 30 to 81% VO(2)max but averaged 55%VO(2)max (6.7 METS) overall. Blood lactate remained >5 mmol x L(-1), and heart rate (HR) averaged 79%HRmax. Equipment had a significant effect on %VO(2)max but only during recovery between drills with HS (61.4 +/- 3.7%) compared with H (53.3 +/- 6.9%) and S (40.1 +/- 8.5%). The TGI was higher (p < 0.05) with HS compared with H at several time-points after 30 minutes. Football practice for OL elicits a significantly higher overall metabolic cost (>6 METS, >50%VO(2)max) than assumed in previous studies. The addition of shoulder pads increases core temperature and energy cost, especially during recovery between active drills in unacclimatized linemen.  相似文献

1. The urinary metabolites of phenothiazine have been identified and quantitated for the rat, mouse, hamster and gerbil.2. All species excreted the majority of the compound in conjugated form.3. The rat, mouse and gerbil were similar in producing leucophenothiazone sulphate as their major metabolite, relying more on the C-oxidation pathways than the hamster which excreted large amounts of phenothiazine-N-glucuronide.4. Musk shrews (Suncus murinus) were maintained for 8 weeks in long (16 h light:8 h darkness) or short (8 h light:16 h darkness) daylengths. Males housed in short daylength had significantly lighter androgen-dependent sex accessory organs than did males kept in long daylengths. This same trend was noted in male sexual behaviour. However, the weights of the testes and epididymides and sperm numbers did not differ. Females housed in short daylengths had significantly lighter cervices and were less likely to demonstrate sex behaviour than animals kept in under long daylengths. Ovarian and uterine weights did not differ. These results suggest that the ability to respond to photoperiod can exist in tropical mammals, even if it is not used as a cue to time seasonal breeding.  相似文献

The hypothesis on a relationship between the high frequency of mitotic disturbances in bone marrow cells and the change in the activity of the S9 liver fraction containing promutagen-activating enzymes under olfactory stress in the house mouse Mus musculus has been tested. For this purpose, the effect of the pheromone 2,5-dimethylpyrazine on the frequency of mitotic disturbances in mouse bone marrow cells has been measured by the anaphase-telophase assay. The Ames test using Salmonella typhimurium has been employed to compare the capacities of the S9 liver fractions from stressed and intact mice for activating the promutagen 2-aminofluorene. It has been demonstrated that the increased frequency of mitotic disturbances in bone marrow cells induced by the pheromonal stressor in male house mice is accompanied by an increased promutagen-activating capacity of the S9 liver fraction. The model system used in the study allowed the genetic consequences of the exposure to the olfactory stressor to be estimated and the possible mechanisms of genome destabilization to be assumed.  相似文献

Esterase-27A (ES-27A) was characterized in strain A/WySnA by a cascade of seven bands seen after disc electrophoresis of serum and subsequent staining for esterase. ES-27A catalyses the hydrolysis of thiocholine butyrate and is strongly inhibited by 100 microM tetraisopropyl pyrophosphamide (isoOMPA). Hence, the enzyme was concluded to be a cholinesterase EC 3.1.1.8. A heat-labile form termed ES-27B was represented by strain AKR/Han. From a three-point cross (AKR/Han, A/Wy) and a five-point cross (AKR/Han, SEG/1), the gene order on chromosome 3 was concluded to be centromere-Car-2-Es-26-Es-27-Amy-1-Adh-1.  相似文献

Abstract

After good seedfalls by southern beech (Nothofagus spp.), density indices for mice increased, the breeding season for adult females was brought forward, and winter breeding was observed. The end of the breeding season of the following summer was brought forward only slightly if the maximum density achieved was not great; incomplete data on 2 very high-density populations suggested a much earlier end to breeding. In early winter following a good seedfall the recruitment of juveniles was temporarily increased. After spring, few young mice entered the population, though breeding continued. The distribution of age classes shifted steadily upwards as population density rose. The peak population of 1976–77 comprised mainly old mice, still breeding, but without significant recruitment. No effects of density on sex ratio, litter size, or body weight could be detected from these data. In all populations studied, density decreases were ultimately due to failure of recruitment and the disappearance of ageing, non-breeding mice. The proximate causes of this mortality were probably the onset of cold weather in 1976–77 and predation by stoats in 1979–80.  相似文献

The effects of behavioral modification on the skeletal morphology of the laboratory mouse (Mus musculus) are investigated. Climibing, with increrased prehensile use of the foot, is found to bring about significant changes in metatarsal and long bone morphology. 1. 1. Eight male Japanese Brazilians and 11 male Japanese volunteered for this study. Each one sat on a chair for 45 min at 40°C (r.h. 50%).

2. 2. Then, they exercised using a bicycle ergometer in a semi-reclining position for 45 min at 40% of maximal oxygen uptake.

3. 3. Thermal and comfort sensation confirmed that Japanese Brazilians felt cooler and more comfortable in 40°C environment than the Japanese.

5. 5. Forearm blood flow and heart rate for Brazilians were significantly lower than those for Japanese.

6. 6. Skin temperature at chest region for Brazilians was found to be significantly higher than that for Japanese.

7. 7. Thus the thermoregulatory responses observed in Japanese Brazilians may be largely attributed to the climate in their native places located on the Tropic of Capricorn.

Tympanic temperature (Tty), mean skin temperature (Tsk) and dynamics of sweating were measured in male subjects, performing prolonged, bicycle-exercise. The exercise was performed under thermoneutral environment after the normal-mixed (C) and low-carbohydrate (LCHO) diet. No difference in changes of Tty was observed after the C and LCHO diets. Sweating was triggered much faster after the LCHO diet. The delay in onset and inertia time of sweating was shorter after the LCHO diet. It is concluded that LCHO diet affects the thermoregulatory responses to exercise by acceleration of sweating, without noticeable differences in body temperature.  相似文献

Five healthy male volunteers performed 20 min of both seated and supine cycle-ergometer exercise (intensity, 50% maximal O2 uptake) in a warm environment (Tdb = 30 degrees C, relative humidity = 40-50%) with and without breathing 10 cmH2O of continuous positive airway pressure (CPAP). The final esophageal temperature (Tes) at the end of 20 min of seated exercise was significantly higher during CPAP (mean difference = 0.18 +/- 0.04 degree C, P less than 0.05) compared with control breathing (C). The Tes threshold for forearm vasodilation was significantly higher (P less than 0.05) during seated CPAP exercise than C (C = 37.16 +/- 0.13 degrees C, CPAP = 37.38 + 0.12 degree C). The highest forearm blood flow (FBF) at the end of exercise was significantly lower (P less than 0.05) during seated exercise with CPAP (mean +/- SE % difference from C = -30.8 +/- 5.8%). During supine exercise, there were no significant differences in the Tes threshold, highest FBF, or final Tes with CPAP compared with C. The added strain on the cardiovascular system produced by CPAP during seated exercise in the heat interacts with body thermoregulation as evidenced by elevated vasodilation thresholds, reduced peak FBF, and slightly higher final esophageal temperatures.  相似文献
