Age determination in the Common duiker Sylvicapra grimmia was investigated by analysis of tooth eruption and replacement sequence, incremental lines of tooth cementum and tooth wear in a unique collection of 48 known-age skulls, and also by analysis by post-natal body growth in known-age duiker. In both the mandible and maxilla, permanent molariform teeth were fully erupted and in wear by 26 months of age. There was little variation in the age of eruption and replacement of all molariform teeth, making this a particularly useful feature of the duiker for age determination purposes. In contrast, the variability in eruption of the incisiforms, coupled with the difficulty in distinguishing deciduous incisiforms from the permanent counterparts, placed an unexpected limitation on the use of these teeth. Although the apparent linear relationship between tooth attrition and age has potential for further investigation as an age determination technique, the cementum annuli were not correlated with chronological age. Theoretical Von Bertalanffy equations were used to analyse body growth with age. It was concluded that because the asymptote of growth was reached at such an early age, and because there is so much individual variation in growth, body growth, including horn growth, is of very limited value for age determination. Age estimation criteria for the southern White rhinoceros ( Ceratotherium simum simum ) are presented both for free-ranging live animals and for cranial material. These are based on: (i) size appearance and horn development of live animals; (ii) stages of tooth eruption; (iii) tooth wear classes; (iv) attrition in height of the first molar tooth; (v) counts of cementum lines visible in tooth sections. Selected measurements are presented for live animals, skulls and horns.
For live animals, eight size classes are distinguished, seven of these covering immature animals up to ten years of age. Sixteen tooth wear classes are established, based on eruption and surface wear of maxillary dentition. Chronological ages were assigned from individually known animals followed in the field, and from skulls from animals for which exact records of age were available, or which could be assigned to an age category from appearance at death. Cementum line counts corresponded approximately with age in years, despite difficulties in interpreting lines. Some variability was observed, possibly related to nutritional conditions.
The maximum cementum line count obtained indicates a longevity of at least 40 years. Full body weight and socio-sexual maturity are attained by males between 10 and 15 years of age, while females first give birth between six and eight years of age. Sequences and times of tooth eruption are similar to those reported for the Black rhinoceros ( Diceros bicornis ).
Comparative cranial and body measurements are presented for the northern subspecies ( Ceratotherium simum cottoni ).  相似文献

Material from 100 impala from a mainly grazing population in the Kenya Rift Valley was investigated to establish age criteria applicable in both the field and the laboratory. Methods relate to tooth eruption, replacement and attrition; horn development; skull and long bone growth and ossification. Determinations are related to the main calving seasons, which occur with two peaks at the time of the long and short rains. All results are approximations which have an accuracy of ±2 months up to physical maturity at an age of c. 2 y. Age determination in animals from 3–8 y appears to yield reliable results with an accuracy of ±6 months at the lower end of the scale, and ± 1 y or even 2 y in older animals.  相似文献

Age criteria for the African buffalo are described. These are based on the tooth eruption sequence and on wear of the first molar. Assignment of absolute ages to the tooth eruption and wear classes has been made by reference to known-age animals and to numbers of cementum lines in tooth sections. For ageing animals to the nearest year, the normal degree of accuracy of the methods is assumed to be about ± 1/2year (1–5 years of age); about ± 1 year (5–15 years of age); and about ±2 years (15-20years of age). A field method of age determination is presented based on horn characteristics and relative body size.  相似文献

Tooth wear scores (ratios of exposed dentin to total crown area) were calculated from dental casts of Australian Aboriginal subjects of known age from three populations. Linear regression equations relating attrition scores to age were derived. The slope of the regression line reflects the rate of tooth wear, and the intercept is related to the timing of first exposure of dentin. Differences in morphology between anterior and posterior teeth are reflected in a linear relationship between attrition scores and age for anterior teeth but a logarithmic relationship for posterior teeth. Correlations between age and attrition range from less than 0.40 for third molars (where differences in the eruption and occlusion of the teeth resulted in different patterns of wear) to greater than 0.80 for the premolars and first molars. Because of the generally high correlations between age and attrition, it is possible to estimate age from the extent of tooth wear with confidence limits of the order of +/- 10 years.  相似文献

A group of 16 captive-born hairy-faced, white-lipped, black-mantled tamarins, Saguinus nigricollis, were observed from birth to maturity. The data for the parameters, body weight, head-body length, right foot length and dental eruption age was recorded at monthly intervals. Linear growth was complete at approximately 12 months of age. Body weight reached the level of the wild-caught parents at 16 to 17 months of age. Deciduous dentition was complete at eight weeks of age and all permanent teeth were present by 41 weeks of age. While this sampling is too small for statistical verification, the data provides guidelines on the parameters recorded.  相似文献

A novel, simple, and objective method is presented for ageing roe deerCapreolus capreolus (Linnaeus, 1758) evaluated on 471 lower jaws from roe deer of known age (351 with permanent premolars). It is based on tooth eruption patterns and presence/absence of wear characters in jaws from roe deer integrated in a scoring system. Permanent cheek teeth emerge in May–July in the year af ter birth, which enables precise age determination of individuals with deciduous premolars. For individuals with permanent cheek teeth, the method provides the correct age for all individ uals younger than 13 months and > 80% of all individuals between 13 and 24 months old. For older in dividuals the accuracy decreases, but decent accuracy is achieved to the age of 48 months. Males have higher wear rates than females corroborating recent documentation of sex-specific life history tactics in ungulates. The data originate from two separated Danish roe deer populations exposed to contrasting habitats, but no difference in wear rate is found between populations. Thus, previous concern about the validity of age determination methods based on tooth wear may have been overstated. The findings demonstrate that objective measures of tooth wear can provide the basis for age determination in ungulate species that are otherwise difficult to age.  相似文献

The aim of the present paper is to determine the beginning, order, median time, termination, dynamics, continuity and intensity of the primary tooth eruption, as well as its calendar, in a sample of children from Zagreb, Croatia. The study included 1288 children. All subjects were classified in one-year age groups. In the examined group, the continuity of tooth eruption occurs from 4.2 months to 41.5 months, i.e., for a period of 37.3 months. Each particular tooth has its own dynamics of eruption (V5-V95) which on the average amounts to 14.35 months (14.92 months in boys and 13.79 months in girls). The continuity of eruption is 35.6 months in boys and 38.9 months in girls. The dynamics of eruption is 14.82 months in boys and 13.79 in girls. The termination of tooth eruption is similar for both sexes.  相似文献

Data on deciduous tooth emergence of 312 children aged 4 to 31 months of Punjabi parentage are presented. Probit analysis was used to derive the median age of tooth emergence. Female children are found to be advanced with respect to tooth emergence than their male counterparts. While comparing the present data with those from other populations it is found that, in general, the mean number of emerged teeth in Punjabi children is more at most ages, with lower median age of eruption for most teeth. Magnitude of interage variability in the eruption times is noticed to be maximum in the 16-17 and 20-21 months age groups. The findings of the study suggest that number of teeth can be used as a parameter for the estimation of age.  相似文献

Chronological ages have been assigned to the defassa waterbuck of western Uganda using four complementary techniques. These are the "jaw board" method in which collected skulls are sorted into arbitrary groups based upon tooth eruption and attrition; tooth impressions taken from immobilised animals at yearly intervals; counting of cementum lines in sectioned incisor teeth, and growth of horns in young males. Using these methods an animal could be aged to within plus or minus six months.  相似文献

Age determination is an important tool in wildlife studies. Estimating the age of animals in the field using tooth wear criteria may be subject to error as a result of variations between individuals, habitats and populations. Data on age estimation of leopards and tooth wear characteristics are lacking. Nineteen leopards in Namibia were assessed for tooth eruption and wear. Between 1991 and 1995 leopards (including 13 individuals of known age) were monitored at one year intervals ('28 leopard years') to record age and tooth wear. At the age of two years leopards had fully developed dentition. Wear started with the incisors and canines, and spread to the premolars and molars. A chronology of tooth eruption and wear in relation to age is presented. Above the age of three years, male leopards showed higher frequencies of enamel flaking and canine fractures than females.  相似文献

A technique whereby impressions of the cheekteeth were used to identify and age live Proechimys guyannensis and P. cuvieri is presented and tested. Based on tooth eruption and occlusal surface wear, 15 age classes were defined. Used in concert with a body measurement, measurements of the length of the toothrow and age class allowed almost all live individuals of the two species to be distinguished. The relationship between mean cheektooth length and hind foot length was most useful for distinguishing relatively old individuals, whereas the relationship between hind foot length or head-plus-body length and toothrow age class was most useful for distinguishing younger individuals. Mean eye lens weight of P. guyannensis increased with toothrow age class, suggesting that the toothrow age classes successfully measured relative age. Individuals of P. guyannensis in lower age classes had juvenile or subadult pelage and did not show signs of reproductive activity, whereas individuals in higher age classes had adult pelage and approximately 50% showed signs of reproductive activity. In the central Amazon, P. cuvieri was found to be proportionally more abundant relative to P. guyannensis in early-successional and edge-dominated habitats.  相似文献

The need for methods for age determination of foetuses is defined. X-ray examination of the foetal head is recommended as the surest basis for age determination. Calculations are made concerning the correlation between cranial length and foetal age, and the methods used for measurements are described in detail. Measurements of the metacarpus and metatarsus may also be used, but they give a poorer correlation. A formula is worked out for age determination based on cranial measurements. On x-ray photographs, tooth development is seen to occur in an obvious sequence. This is described. However, the interpretation of these observations is subjective and requires control material for comparison. The same is true for the sequence of ossification of the skeleton, which in foetuses < 120 days gives the surest basis for evaluation. Here, too, a wide range of control material for comparison is necessary. The sequence in the appearance of body hair — development and eruption — is noted, as far as the head is concerned. This alone gives an insecure basis for evaluation. By using the 4 systems of parameters mentioned, the age of a foetus can be determined within an error of ± 4—5 days.  相似文献

We measured the molar size from a single population of wild baboons from Amboseli (Kenya), both females (n=57) and males (n=50). All the females were of known age; the males represented a mix of known-age individuals (n=31) and individuals with ages estimated to within 2 years (n=19). The results showed a significant reduction in the mesiodistal length of teeth in both sexes as a function of age. Overall patterns of age-related change in tooth size did not change whether we included or excluded the individuals of estimated age, but patterns of statistical significance changed as a result of changed sample sizes. Our results demonstrate that tooth length is directly related to age due to interproximal wearing caused by M2 and M3 compression loads. Dental studies in primates, including both fossil and extant species, are mostly based on specimens obtained from osteological collections of varying origins, for which the age at death of each individual in the sample is not known. Researchers should take into account the phenomenon of interproximal attrition leading to reduced tooth size when measuring tooth length for ondontometric purposes.  相似文献

Tooth dislocation (tilting) was recorded in 1,200 skulls from 34 museum collections. The findings of dislocation by tooth type, tooth wear, and abscess location are presented. A model for dislocation based upon the progressive loss of tooth support provides a rational explanation for the phenomenon. Physiological continuous tooth eruption was considered to account for a component of the progressive loss of tooth attachment. The process of attrition, pulp perforation, and dental abscess cavity formation resulted in further, more severe loss of tooth support. Heavy functional forces, in association with greatly reduced bone support, tilted the crown lingually and root buccally. When the tooth had tilted to such an extent that the root apices protruded from the bone and, presumably (in life) through the gingival/mucosal tissues, the infected root canals were effectively isolated from the internal environment. The tooth continued to function. The more typical consequence of severe attrition and dental abscess formation was tooth loss; it also isolated an infected tooth from living tissue, but without the benefit of retaining function.  相似文献

Objective: To investigate the influence of weight loss expectations (expected 1‐year BMI loss, dream and maximum acceptable BMI) on attrition in obese patients seeking treatment. Research Methods and Procedures: Obese subjects (1785; 1393 women; median age, 46 years; median BMI, 36.7 kg/m2) seeking treatment in 23 medical Italian centers were evaluated. Baseline diet and weight history, weight loss expectations, and primary motivation for seeking treatment (health or improving appearance) were systematically recorded. Psychiatric distress, binge eating, and body image dissatisfaction were tested at baseline by self‐administered questionnaires (Symptom Check List‐90, Binge Eating Scale, and Body Uneasiness Test). Attrition and BMI change at 12 months were prospectively recorded. Results: At 12 months, 923 of 1785 patients (51.7%) had discontinued treatment. Compared with continuers, drop‐outs had a significantly lower age, a lower age at first dieting, lower dream BMI, a higher expected 1‐year BMI loss, and a higher weight phobia. At logistic regression analysis, the strongest predictors of attrition at 12 months were lower age and higher expected 1‐year BMI loss. The risk of drop‐out increased systematically for unit increase in expected BMI loss at 12 months (hazard ratio, 1.12; 95% confidence interval, 1.04 to 1.20; p = 0.0018). The risk was particularly elevated in the first 6 months. Discussion: Baseline weight loss expectations are independent cognitive predictors of attrition in obese patients entering a weight‐losing program; the higher the expectations, the higher attrition at 12 months. Unrealistic weight goals should be tackled at the very beginning of treatment.  相似文献

The potential role of dental function in TMJ osteoarthritis is examined in an ancient British population. Human skeletal remains from five archaeological sites in England (n = 369) were studied to assess the associations between the presence of osteoarthritis and dental function variables, in particular antemortem tooth loss and dental attrition. Individuals aged over 17 years with at least a portion of either the left or right TMJ were included in the study. Each individual was scored for the occurrence of arthritic lesions on the mandibular condyle and glenoid fossa, the level of dental attrition, and antemortem tooth loss. A loglinear analysis was performed with osteoarthritis as the dependent variable and tooth loss, attrition, sex, and age as the independent variables. Tooth loss and sex are not significantly associated with TMJ osteoarthritis when attrition and age are included in the analysis. Attrition is significantly associated with osteoarthritis even when the analysis corrects for age. The significant association of attrition with osteoarthritis suggests that dental functions may have an influence, separate from ageing, on the development of TMJ osteoarthritis.  相似文献

The aim of this study was to document variation of deciduous tooth formation and eruption. The material comprises 121 individuals of known or estimated age (using tooth length) from Spitalfields in London, and radiographs of 61 healthy living children aged 2-5 years. Other skeletal material from two medieval Scottish archaeological sites (Whithorn, N=74; Newark Bay, N=59) was also examined. Stages of crown and root formation as well as eruption (alveolar, midway, and occlusal levels) were assessed for each developing maxillary and mandibular tooth from radiographs or direct vision. Age of attainment for individual stages was calculated by probit analysis, and these data were also adapted for use in estimating age. The timing of crown completion was similar to previously reported studies, but apex completion times were later. Analysis of data relative to the first and second molars at the two stages D (crown complete) and F (root length > or =crown height) allowed comparison with the Scottish material. No significant differences were observed between population groups for tooth formation or eruption. These data fill several gaps in the literature, and will be useful in assessing maturity and predicting age during early childhood.  相似文献

The eruption and wear of the cheek teeth of male Fallow deer from a park and wild population has been studied for age determination purposes. It was found possible to age accurately up to 48 months animals whose date of death was known, whether they were from a wild or park population. It was found that up to at least this age individual and environmental differences affecting animals born in successive years did not mask those resulting fromthe restricted seasonal breeding of this species.
Antler development and body weight were studied in relation to the ages obtained and were found to be of limited value for age estimation.  相似文献

Juveniles of coho salmon Oncorhynchus kisutch and mykiss Parasalmo mykiss at the age 1 + (yearlings) are differentiated by the content of different fractions of lipids (the lipid status), feeding habits, and by size-weight characteristics even eight months prior to smoltification. The juveniles of coho salmon and mykiss with high lipid status consume more calorific food items and, as a rule, have higher (on average) body length and weight. The juveniles with low lipid status consume less calorific organisms and have lower body length and weight. It is supposed that a considerable part of juveniles with high lipid status will migrate seaward the next year. The role of feeding habits in formation of this differentiation and, accordingly, in determination of timing of smoltification are discussed.  相似文献
