Groundhoppers are considered to be detrito-bryophagous, and moss phyllodes represent a main food consumed by all studied species. We studied the food biology of two groundhoppers: the stenotopic habitat specialist Tetrix ceperoi (Bolivar, 1887) and the eurytopic T. tenuicornis (Sahlberg, 1893). These species occurred syntopically in an abandoned sand pit in the Czech Republic. The dietary preferences of the two species were very similar, with detritus being the dominant component, followed by mosses and other kinds of organic matter. The eurytopic T. tenuicornis consumed a greater diversity of mosses than the stenotopic T. ceperoi. The most frequently consumed mosses were the dominant species at the locality (Barbula spp., Bryum caespiticium, and Ceratodon purpureus), but some species-specific preferences were evident in the consumption of other moss species. To determine whether these groundhoppers mainly consumed mosses to obtain the water in their tissues, we compared the food composition at two sites that differed considerably in water availability. A selective consumption of mosses according to the water availability at the sites was evident. At the dry site, groundhoppers frequently consumed mosses that are simultaneously more tolerant to desiccation and nutritionally richer (species in the genera Barbula and Ceratodon) than the other mosses. Our results indicate that although groundhoppers generally consume those mosses that are most available, they do show some preference for mosses according to their nutritional quality and according to their ability to retain water under dry conditions.  相似文献

The natural diet of herbivorous zooplankton was analyzed for a better understanding of the trophic relationships in Lake Xolotlán (Managua). Gut content of the most common zooplankton species (Arctodiaptomus dorsalis, Moina micrura andDiaphanosoma fluviatile) were analyzed. The quality and the relative abundance of ingested algae was studied. The most consumed algae during the dry season (February) wereCyclotella, Oocystis andLyngbya, and during the rainy season (November)Cyclotella, Oocystis andChroococcus. The kind of food ingested byA. dorsalis andM. micrura was similar in both periods. There was no similarity with the diet ofD. fluviatile. During the dry season, when algal biomass in the lake was high,A. dorsalis andM. micrura ingested a higher proportion of diatoms. During the rainy season, when food was scarce, the diet was more diverse and bluegreen algae (Chroococcus) were ingested in a larger proportion.Diaphanosoma fluviatile ingested predominantly tiny particles (bacteria and detritus) and algal food consisted mainly of green algae (Oocystis) and probably (not studied) nanoplanktonic algae. The results were consistent with those obtained in other lakes, indicating the importance of diatoms and green algae for zooplankton nutrition.  相似文献

Gypsy moth (Lymantria dispar (L.) (Lepidoptera: Lymantriidae)) larvae were reared from hatch on 1.25% N or 3.5% N artificial diet (previous diet) and switched reciprocally to the other diet (current diet) after molting into the second, third, fourth, or fifth instar. The nitrogen concentration of food consumed during previous instars had a strong residual effect on the growth rate in subsequent instars when a diet switch was made during instars two through four, but did not affect growth rate of fifth-instar larvae despite effects on food consumption and utilization. In early instars, larvae reared on 1.25% N artificial diet and then switched to 3.75% N diet had lower mass-adjusted growth rates than larvae continuously reared on 3.75% N diet. Conversely, larvae reared on 3.75% N diet and switched to 1.25% N had higher mass-adjusted growth rates than larvae reared continuously on 1.25% N diet. Relative to larvae previously reared on 1.25% N diet, fifth-instar male larvae previously reared on 3.75% N diet had slightly lower consumption rates, higher net growth efficiency (ECD), and higher gross growth efficiency (ECI). Larvae previously reared on 3.75% N diet tended to have lower food assimilation efficiency (AD) and lower nitrogen assimilation efficiency (AD(N)). Although both previous and current diet nitrogen concentration strongly affected larval growth and food utilization, the interaction term between these was not significant for any response variables except ECD and ECI. Because the interaction term reflects the effect of switching per se, the results indicate that there was a metabolic cost associated with switching, but no inherent net cost or benefit of diet-switching to growth.  相似文献

Abstract

A single, small moss leaf has been found among very small amounts of contents extracted from the Tyrolean Iceman's colon. It belongs to the species Neckera complanata Hedw., a woodland moss of low to moderate altitudes. The leaf was accidently ingested and not consumed as food.  相似文献

A year-round study was conducted to examine feeding habits and food resources of the filter-feeding Trichoptera Arctopsyche grandis and Brachycentrus occidentalis along a regulated mountain stream gradient. There was a well defined longitudinal species replacement with A. grandis reaching maximum densities 2.3 kilometers below the impoundment, and concomitant with its decline downstream was an increase in B. occidentalis. At all sampling sites the < 75 µm organic seston fraction usually consisted primarily of diatoms (>70%, by areal estimate on microscope slides), whereas the 75–250 µm and > 250 µm seston fractions were predominantly composed of detritus (> 80 %). B. occidentalis larvae consumed primarily detritus and diatoms (> 70 % of the diet), while A. grandis ingested a variety of materials with animals, detritus and/or filamentous algae often constituting > 80% of the diet. Animal material was over-represented in the diets of both species when compared with amounts in the seston. Feeding habits provided partial explanations for the distinct longitudinal distribution patterns of filter-feeding Trichoptera observed in the regulated river.  相似文献

An ecological study on the choice of microhabitat and diet of small mammals was carried out in Maynugus irrigation field of the Tigray region in northern Ethiopia. Abundance of rodents was high during the reproductive phase of the agricultural plants. Mastomys erythroleucus occurred more frequently in vegetable fields, whereas Arvicanthis dembeensis was more frequent in habitats with monocot plants. Scrotal males and reproductive females consumed more food by weight than abdominal males and quiescent females. Arvicanthis dembeensis consumed more food than M. erythroleucus. Both the species consumed more food during the main rainy season. All the cultivated plants were attacked by these rodents with a degree of difference in relation to season, species, sex, age and sexual condition. As rodent attack was more intense during the fruiting phase of the plants, rodent control management should be carried out during the flowering phase.  相似文献

The passage rate of food through the alimentary tract of three captive, female leopard seals (Hydrurga leptonyx) was assessed. Seals were housed during winter in holding pools with access to water to reduce factors affecting digestion. Three different marker types were used; large and small beads and TiO2. Animals were checked hourly, and sample collections continued for 270 h after dosing. Individual differences in transit and mean retention times were observed, possibly reflecting inter-digestive emptying times of the stomach and small intestine. Age differences and activity levels may also have been a factor. Leopard seals displayed extended food transit times similar to terrestrial carnivores instead of other pinnipeds. This result suggests an adaptation of digestive system to cope with the opportunistic diet and range of prey types consumed.  相似文献

Digestive tract contents of 241 specimens captured between March 1998 and November 1999 were analysed using both qualitative and quantitative methods to determine diet composition and feeding habits of Squalius cephalus (L., 1758) inhabiting Lake Tödürge, Turkey. Ages ranged from I to VI years; 60.6% of the fish were females, 39.4% males. The chub population appeared to consume a wide range of food items such as phytoplankton, zooplankton, nematodes, insects, fish, macrophytes, plant and animal detritus, whereby zooplankton (69.2%) predominated. Although individuals in the age I group preferred plankton (phytoplankton frequently; zooplankton infrequently), the older specimens (age groups IV, V and VI) behaved mostly as carnivores but also consumed some macrophytes. While there were no significant differences between diet compositions of males and females, seasonal changes were observed in frequency of occurrence, quality and quantity of consumption, and feeding activity. The chub specimens fed most heavily during spring (the pre‐spawning period: March, April and May). Highest food volume (13.0 cm3) consumed was in May and the lowest in September (2.0 cm3) while also being correlated with temperature. All of the food items were found in the digestive tract (82.1% of the specimens examined over all seasons). Highest fullness (84.9%) was reached in autumn and the lowest during summer (79.8%).  相似文献

How small-bodied (500–1,200 g) folivorous prosimian primates cope with large amounts of foliage in their diet seasonally has yet to be determined for many species such as Hapalemur griseus, which specializes on bamboo. To address this issue, we present results on seasonal variation in activity and diet from a wild group of H. griseus in southeastern Madagascar. Throughout the study (which was conducted from July–November 1994 and July 1995–February 1996), H. griseus primarily fed on new growth from three species of bamboo: two species of liana bamboo and Cephalostachyum perrieri. Bamboo species were used in different ways seasonally; liana bamboo was consumed more during the dry, cool season, and C. perrieri was eaten more often during the wet, warm season. H. griseus also spent more of their time feeding and traveling than nocturnal folivores of similar body size during the dry season. During the warm wet season, H. griseus decreased the amount of time spent feeding and traveling and rested more often. We hypothesize that seasonal changes in activity may be primarily related to the distribution and availability of food sources and/or reproductive cycles. Am. J. Although Arnoglossus laterna (Walbaum, 1792) is a common benthic fish in Portugal, several aspects of its feeding ecology remain incomplete. In this study, diet was examined and the food consumption estimated on inshore waters in the central coast of Portugal. The diet of the scaldfish included mainly mysids, amphipods and polychaetes, while the decapod Philocheras bispinosus Hailstone was the most frequent prey. Variation in the diet according to fish size (two size‐classes), sex and spawning/non‐spawning seasons was examined. Significant differences in diet composition were found between seasons, whereby the most frequently consumed prey in the non‐spawning season were crustaceans, while polychaetes and nemerteneans comprised most of its diet in the spawning season. The average value of the vacuity index was very similar between seasons (24.7% non‐spawning season and 25.0% spawning season). Diet overlap between size‐classes and sexes was high, but low between the two seasons. Food consumption of A. laterna was estimated based on diet characterization and evacuation rate. The estimate of the daily food consumption was 1.15 mg dry weight for the non‐spawning season and 1.67 mg dry weight for the spawning season. Significant differences in consumption rates were found between size‐classes and sexes. Larger individuals showed a higher consumption rate than smaller individuals. Females consumed more food than males in the non‐spawning season, while in the spawning season males consumed more than females.  相似文献

Inorganic nitrogen processing and assimilation in a forested wetland   总被引:1,自引:1,他引:0
Feeding selectivity by five epilithic, case-building trichopteran species from a first-order stream was examined using laboratory experiments. Larvae had the choice of three food types: periphyton and detritus from the stream, and nettle broth as an artificial food source. Food type influenced the microdistribution of these species. Larvae were able to distinguish between different food types and showed species-specific responses to the various types of food. Drusus annulatus, Micrasema longulum and Apatania fimbriata favoured periphyton, while Agapetus fuscipes and Silo pallipes showed no preference for periphyton over detritus. Four of the five species examined (Apatania fimbriata was the exception) tended to avoid nettle broth. The complexity of foraging behaviour was illustrated by M. longulum. Given a choice between detritus, periphyton and periphyton with the addition of moss, they clearly preferred the latter food type, scraping mostly on the epiphytic algae. Proportions of a given species selecting periphyton were correlated with percentage areas of algae in the gut contents of that species in the field. D. annulatus, M. longulum and A. fimbriata showed the greatest preference for periphyton, and consumed the highest proportions of algae in the field. A. fuscipes and S. pallipes often selected detritus, and these species had the lowest proportions of algae, and the highest proportions of detritus, in their guts.  相似文献

Analysis of the gut contents of Procladius bellus (Loew) larvae collected in field samples indicated that it was a detrivitore‐omnivore. The observed dietary change from first and second instars (detritivore‐herbivores) to third and fourth instars (omnivores) did not suggest a change in feeding behaviour from detritivore to predator, but rather that the animal material was consumed along with larger detrital material. Small detrital material (1–15 μm) was an important dietary component and detritus in general contributed 50–70% of the overall diet. Diatoms and green algae contributed 15–20%, while blue‐green algae contributed about 10%. Animal material contributed about 5% to second and third instar larvae and 20% to fourth instar larvae.  相似文献

Feeding habits of Perla grandis (Rambur) nymphs have been investigated in the Rio Berga, an Apenninic stream of Northwestern Italy. In this study, we analysed gut contents of 50 nymphs of this species, with the aim to investigate feeding preferences. Nymphs were collected from a single riffle, of which benthic coenosis was also determined. We detected a change in the diet during ontogenesis, with small instars feeding mainly on detritus and large instars strictly carnivorous. We also detected the existence of an evident trophic selection: diet was almost entirely dominated by Chironomidae, independently from their availability on the substratum. This finding is discussed on the basis of ecological and ethological considerations.  相似文献

The diet and feeding ecology of 12 cyprinid fishes were studied in the Thalayanai stream of southern India. The diet of Barbodes sarana, Danio aequipinnatus and Rasbora daniconius were specialized in terrestrial and aquatic insects. Hypselobarbus dobsoni and Garra mullya consumed vegetative matter and unicellular algae as their most important dietary component, respectively. Hypselobarbus curmuca and Hypselobarbus dubius specialized in crustaceans and molluscs. Puntius amphibious, Puntius bimaculatus, Puntius dorsalis, Puntius filamentosus and Puntius tambraparniei fed on variety of food resources (aquatic insects, algae and detritus) and their feeding intake varied between wet to dry seasons. Levin’s index of diet breadth showed the broadest diets for P. dorsalis in both seasons, whereas G. mullya had a narrow feeding spectrum in both seasons. Among co-existing species, diet overlaps were substantially low during both wet and dry season. These results suggest that feeding specialization and low diet overlap reduce inter-specific competition, allowing co-existence of these cyprinid fishes in this highly structured stream assemblage.  相似文献

The natural food ofOreochromis niloticus in Lake Awasa was studied from the stomach contents of 10 fish measuring 18–32 cm (standard length) monthly from August 1984 to April 1986.Chroococcus, Oscillatoria andBotryococcus were found to be important food items in the diet. Animal foods were observed on rare occasions and these were mainly Rotifera. Blue-green algae as a group contribute about 28.1% of the ash free dry weight (AFDW) whereas diatoms and green algae (excludingBotryococcus) make 2.31% and 2.39% of AFDW, respectively.Botryococcus, detritus and other algae comprised 67.2% of AFDW and it was suspected that more than half of this was contributed byBotryococcus. Blue-green algae, which were especially abundant in the diet during the dry season, November–February, are nutritionally most important. Seasonal variation in algal species composition could influence the quality of food ingested by the fish.  相似文献

Abstract.
  • 1 Mechanisms of interference competition affecting Aedes sierrensis (Ludlow) were investigated in laboratory microcosms using reconstituted, natural tree-hole detritus as food and substrate.
  • 2 Pupation success, larval development time, and pupal weight were all affected by larval density but not by surface area:volume ratio of the microcosm.
  • 3 Mature fourth instars affected pupation success, pupal weight, and development time of developing cohorts separated from them by a 2 μm pore membrane impermeable to bacteria, indicating that chemical competition is proportional to density of at least older instars.
  • 4 Cannibalism does not occur, regardless of the presence or absence of food or physical complexity.
  • 5 Fourth instars inhibited each other's feeding at densities of 64 larvae/ml or greater. Feeding inhibition due to physical contact (encounter competition) was abated but not eliminated by increasing physical complexity of the microcosm by the addition of leaves.
  • 6 Levels of detritus and larval density both affect weight of day-1 fourth instars. Resistance to encounter competition is proportional to fourth instar weight and weight-specific resistance is correlated with rank weight within a developing cohort.
  • 7 At densities around the population equilibrium in nature, encounter competition should be taking place, especially in tree holes with few leaves or other large litter.

1. The consumption of microcrustacea by two polyphagous predators, larvae of the caddisfly Plectrocnemia conspersa (Curtis) and the alderfly Sialis fuliginosa Pictet, was investigated in an English stream with a well-known macro- and microinvertebrate fauna. Benthic samples were collected in August, November, December and April, and the gut contents of all individuals of both predators were examined. 2. All the microcrustacean groups (Cyclopoida, Harpacticoida, Chydoridae and Ostracoda) were identified in gut contents. Of the ten taxa present in the benthos, all occurred in the diet of P. conspersa; nine were found in S. fuliginosa. 3. Ontogenetic shifts in the diets of both predators were found, and microcrustacea were consumed more frequently by small than large instars. 4. There was little evidence of selective feeding by P. conspersa, whereas ostracods were over-represented in the diet of S. fuliginosa, compared with benthic relative densities. The Chydoridae were under-represented in the diet of both predators. 5. The food web of Broadstone Stream is perhaps the most detailed web available for any running water habitat. Increased taxonomic resolution produced marked changes in values of connectance and predator-prey ratios. Linkage density remained fairly constant at different levels of resolution and were high, indicative of a web of generalist species. Omnivory was pronounced and may be characteristic of donor-controlled systems where organic detritus is the primary energy base.  相似文献

Food preferences of tanypodinae larvae (Diptera: Chironomidae)   总被引:2,自引:2,他引:0
Analyses of the gut contents of larvae of three species of Tanypodinae, collected from four sites in north-east England and Scotland, invariably showed small particles (1–10 µm2), predominantly of detritus, to be more abundant than large particles (10–100 µm2), mostly algae and diatoms. No animal remains, such as carapaces, head capsules and chaetae, or vascular plant fragments were found in any of the intestines. In contrast, food-choice and growth experiments suggested that animal food (particularly Tubificidae and Chironominae larvae) was important in the tanypod diet. In the food-choice experiments, six different foods offered to small (4–7 mm long) and to large (8–12 mm long) larvae of Procladius choreus Meigen, were chosen in the following order: live Tubificidae spp.; detritus; live Chironominae larvae; a mixture of algae and diatoms; live Ostracoda spp.; and live Cladocera spp. However, when the results of the individual choices were examined, it was clear that the small larvae had consumed greater amounts of the small types of food (i.e. detritus, algae and diatoms) in comparison to the large larvae. In the growth experiment, those larvae of P. choreus reared solely on Tubificidae, detritus or Chironominae larvae thrived, while those fed on algae and diatoms, ostracods or cladocerans grew more slowly and fewer survived the experimental period. It was concluded that although Tanypodinae larvae are primarily predators with definite food preferences in ideal foraging conditions, in adverse conditions they will utilize a range of available stand-by foods, the most important of which appears to be detritus.  相似文献

Synopsis Gizzard shad,Dorosoma cepedianum, in Acton Lake, Ohio, ingested foods of varying nutritional quality during the 1981–1983 growing seasons. Adult (ages 2–4) fish fed on a mixed diet (ORG>30%; C:N<7:1) of zooplankton and organic detritus in early summer, and on detrital materials (ORG<16%; C:N>11:1) during the remainder of the growing season. Age 0 (<35 mm standard length) fish ingested only detrital materials. The nutritional quality (ORG = 10 – 20%; C:N<11:1) of these foods displayed little seasonal variation, but was higher than that of organic detritus taken by adult fish in late summer and autumn. Growth and condition of gizzard shad were poor when the diet consisted of detrital materials; however, age 4 fish (1983) grew rapidly and condition improved when zooplankton were consumed. These results suggest that ingestion of poor-quality detritus can reduce the growth and condition of gizzard shad in Acton Lake, whereas the seasonal inclusion of high-quality zooplankton in the diet can result in rapid growth and improved condition.  相似文献

The stable isotope ratio and seasonal changes in diet of two indigenous (Oreochromis mossambicus, Tilapia rendalli) and one exotic (Oreochromis niloticus) tilapiine cichlids in the subtropical Limpopo River, South Africa were investigated to determine patterns of resource partitioning. Stomach contents of O. niloticus and O. mossambicus indicated high dietary overlap across size class, habitat and season, with both species primarily feeding on vegetative detritus. However, stable isotope analysis revealed that the two Oreochromis species had different stable isotope ratios derived from different food sources. The relatively δ13C-depleted O. niloticus indicates a phytoplankton-based diet, while the δ13C-enriched O. mossambicus indicates a macrophagous diet dominated by vegetative detritus and periphyton. The high similarity in stomach contents and the interspecific differences in isotopic composition reveal fine-scale patterns of food resource partitioning that could be achieved through selective feeding. Tilapia rendalli was largely macrophagous and fed mainly on aquatic macrophytes and had a low dietary overlap with both O. niloticus and O. mossambicus. In the Limpopo River, detritus and algae are probably the most abundant food resources and the causal factors responsible for the observed patterns of resource partitioning among the tilapiines are usually difficult to ascertain. Fish may be able to perceive food resources in terms of the dynamics that determine their availability. Detailed studies of variation in food resource availability and fish habitat use within the system are needed to evaluate this hypothesis.  相似文献
