To help clarify the relationship between prolactin (PRL) secretion and aggression in the hamster, the aggressiveness of ovariectomized females given two ectopically grafted pituitary glands was compared to that of ovariectomized control females which underwent a sham transplantation procedure. In a series of three neutral territory tests with male partners, female-initiated attacks, chasing, and fighting were more frequent in the pituitary-grafted group than in the controls. Male partners of pituitary-grafted females responded by exhibiting more submissive behavior than did males paired with control females. In a final test in which pituitary-grafted females were paired with control female partners, control females were found to be more submissive and less aggressive than experimentals despite a significant body weight advantage. These results demonstrate a facilitatory effect of pituitary transplantation on aggression which is independent of gonadal hormones. Because an association between heightened aggressiveness and reported elevations in PRL secretion is observed in pituitary-grafted females and in pregnant and lactating females, these findings lend further support to the hypothesis that PRL promotes aggression during the hamster reproductive cycle.  相似文献

Summary Field evidence indicates that adult microtines, especially females, may be a major cause of poor juvenile survival and this may be instrumental in their population regulation. This suggests that males and females behave differently towards young animals. To examine how adult males, nonlactating females, and lactating females behave towards strange young, I introduced young animals into the home cage of the adults. Lactating females were most aggressive towards young; most males investigated them; most nonlactating females ignored them. However, discriminant function analysis indicated a great deal of overlap in the behavior of the classes. None of the classes behaved differently towards young of either sex. Females did not vary their behavior during lactation. Behavior varied among lactating females, with 55% showing little aggression and 20% showing a great deal. Most lactating females showed similar behavior in each of their bouts: docile females remained docile, aggressive females remained aggressive. I conclude that lactating females are most aggressive towards strange young. These results are consistent with the field evidence, which suggests that adult females depress juvenile survival and recruitment and that the main culprits are breeding females.  相似文献

Six experiments were conducted to assess the influence of duration of lactation, the presence of young, and the stimulus characteristics of intruder animals upon postpartum aggression of mice. The first experiment showed that postpartum aggression toward conspecifics was highest between Day 3 and Day 8, declined between Day 9 and Day 14, and was present toward males but absent toward females between Day 15 and Day 21 of the lactation period. Experiment 2 showed that lactating mice rarely attacked conspecifics to which they had been previously exposed but would readily attack strangers. Experiment 3 and 4 demonstrated that lactating animals never attacked intruders when tested 5 hr after pup removal. However, placement of young behind a wire partition in the home-cage for 5 hr or replacement of the offspring for as little as 5 min following 5 hr of separation restored postpartum aggression. The fifth experiment showed that 1- and 10-day old intruders were seldom attacked while intense aggression was directed against 14- and 20-day old intruders. Finally, Experiment 6 demonstrated that 14-day old intruders whose hair was removed were rarely attacked.  相似文献

The aggressive behavior of alpha male rats and lactating females were each examined toward an intact adult male rat, a castrated adult male rat, an anesthetized adult male rat, a nonlactating adult female rat, an adult albino guinea pig (male or female), or an albino mouse (male or female). When in their living colony, females displayed high levels of aggressiveness toward all stimulus objects except a mouse. The aggression toward the intruding males occurred whether the female's pups were present or not. Alpha males were aggressive toward the same stimuli except an intruding female rat and a mouse. When tested in an unfamiliar colony, the males but not the females (with or without pups present) were aggressive toward an adult male rat. Half of the females but none of the males displayed defensive burying toward an anesthetized intruder. It is suggested that the attack on an adult female, the absence of attack outside of the resident colony, and the tendency to display defensive burying are features of the aggressiveness of lactating females that are fundamentally different from the aggressiveness of alpha males. The form of the aggression (lateral attack vs. lunge attack) was only quantitatively different in males and females.  相似文献

To gain information on possible hormonal correlates, the aggressive behavior of intact female hamsters towards males was observed at various times during the estrous cycle, pseudopregnancy, pregnancy, and lactation. For methodological information, estrous cycle females also were tested after varying periods of social isolation. It was found that pregnant and especially lactating hamsters were more aggressive than pseudopregnant or estrous cycling females. Comparisons of days within each reproductive condition showed that aggression tended to be higher on certain days: the day preceding behavioral estrus of the estrous cycle, Day 10 of pregnancy, and the first 5 days of lactation. Except for pseudopregnancy, sexual behavior unaccompanied by aggression occurred at some time during all reproductive conditions, and both sexual behavior and aggression were found to occur together on Day 10 of pregnancy and Day 1 of lactation. The changes in aggressive behavior associated with reproductive states were attributed to increased male interest, inhibition by ovarian hormones, and facilitation by prolactin. Increasing periods of social isolation also were found to be associated with increased aggression. It was suggested that this effect, too. might have been due to increased prolactin levels.  相似文献

This experiment was one part of a larger study investigating problems of aggression towards females by male broiler breeder fowl. To investigate causal mechanisms, we were interested in determining (1) if feed-restriction during rearing affects behaviour towards females at sexual maturity and (2) if aggressiveness towards females is correlated with general levels of aggressiveness. We compared broiler breeder males with commercial laying strain males, which were either fed ad libitum or were feed-restricted during the rearing phase, and with game strain males, bred for fighting. Differences in behaviour were determined by observing males during interactions with small groups of females.Laying strain males did not behave aggressively towards females, whether feed-restricted or fed ad libitum during rearing. Despite genetic selection for fighting ability, game strain males also were not aggressive towards females. Conversely, broiler breeder males displayed significantly higher levels of aggression towards females than did feed-restricted laying strain males (P<0.02). Broiler breeder males were rough with females during mating, whereas laying strain and game strain males were not. Females struggled more frequently during mating attempts by broiler breeder males (P<0.002) and interfered frequently when these males attempted to mate with other females.From our results, we conclude that (1) feed-restriction during rearing has little effect on the sexual and aggressive behaviour of laying strain males at maturity and (2) selection for aggressiveness has not resulted in males which are more aggressive to females. Aggression towards females appears to be a unique problem occurring in broiler breeder male strains and not a function of feed-restriction.  相似文献

Two experiments were performed to examine aggression and dominance in domestic male and female Rattus norvegicus living in small mixed-sex (3 males and 3 females) groups. Experiment 1 examined the development of aggression in females. A single female (alpha) within each of the six colonies tested showed the preponderance of attacks on male intruders placed into the home-cage when male colony residents were absent. Over 12 weeks of intruder-aggression training female alphas showed only a mild nonsignificant elevation of aggressive behavior. A comparison of aggression of male and female colony alphas tested with opponents of each sex revealed that aggression was mainly directed at like-sex opponents, and that female attack was more defensive in character than male attack regardless of opponent sex. The highest intensity of aggression occurred when male alphas confronted male intruders. Although intruders never showed offense toward male residents, 61% of intruding males showed offense in response to attack by females.Experiment 2 investigated the relationship between aggressive dominance and competitive measures of dominance within each of 10 mixed-sex colonies. Alpha stat s of male and female colony residents did not reliably predict priority of access to food or water in tests of direct resource competition with like-sex colony members. When colony males were simultaneously tested for copulation, the copulatory behavior of alpha males was significantly greater than that of other colony males. Results are discussed in relation to the role of aggression in the reproductive strategy of male and female Rattus norvegicus.  相似文献

An orphaned infant ring-tailed lemur (Lemur catta) was attacked persistently by immigrant males and disappeared with severe wounds at Berenty Reserve, Madagascar. Prior to the attacks, two troop members disappeared. On 20 November 1998, the only resident male in Troop C2B disappeared suddenly. After the disappearance, nine males from three neighboring troops approached, but only six males continued to shadow the troop. Of the females, the one lactating female attacked the males the most frequently. On 21 January 1999, the lactating female disappeared and her infant was orphaned. Subsequently, five attacks on the infant by immigrant males were observed for five consecutive days from January 23 to 27. The aggression was persistent and specifically targeted the infant, suggesting that the attacks were purposeful aggression, rather than redirected or accidental aggression. The primary attacker was the most dominant of the immigrant males, and mated with females in the next mating season.  相似文献

Male sticklebacks with nests were more aggressive towards other males than were males which had yet to build nests.Males with nests were more aggressive towards other males than towards non-gravid females. This was not true of fish that had yet to build nests.The increased aggression shown to other males by males with nests was reduced after gonadectomy to the level characteristic of fish that had yet to build nests. This reduction occurred in the first week after the operation. Gonadectomy had no immediate effect on the aggression shown to non-gravid females.The aggression of males that had still to build nests was not reduced by gonadectomy.Gonadectomy resulted in a complete absence of nest building and nest-directed behaviour.  相似文献

It has been shown that nitric oxide (NO) increases aggression in male mice, whereas it decreases aggression in lactating female mice and prairie voles. It is also known that aggression can be exhibited at different levels in rodent species, strain or subtypes. The aims of this study were to investigate the proportion of aggressiveness in Wistar rats, the effect of intraperitoneally administered nonspecific nitric oxide synthase (NOS) inhibitor L-NAME (NG-nitro L-arginine methyl ester) on maternal aggression towards female intruders, and whether these effects are due to NO production or not. Rats were given saline intraperitoneally on the postpartum Day 2 and aggression levels were recorded. The same rats were given 60 mg/kg L-NAME or D-NAME (NG-nitro D-arginine methyl ester) on the postpartum Day 3 and their effects on aggression levels were compared to saline. While L-NAME administration did not cause any differences in the total number of aggressive behavior, aggression duration and aggression intensity, it reduced the proportion of animals showing aggressive behavior. In addition, the latency of the first aggression was significantly increased by L-NAME. In the D-NAME group, however, no significant change was found. Our results have shown that L-NAME reduces maternal aggression towards female intruders in Wistar rats through inhibition of NO production. These results suggest that the role of NO in offensive and defensive maternal aggression shares neural mechanisms.  相似文献

Long-term field observations and experimental manipulations were made on a population of harlequin frogs, Atelopus varius, in Costa Rica to document seasonality of intra- and intersexual aggression, determine the function of aggression, and identify the factors that influence success in aggressive encounters. Both males and females defended portions of their home range and exhibited site fidelity. Males were more aggressive towards other males during the pre-breeding and breeding seasons, whereas females were more aggressive towards other females during the post-breeding season. For up to several months prior to oviposition, males attempted to amplex (clasp) females without courtship behaviour, while females chased males from their territories and attempted to dislodge males that amplexed them. In staged encounters the winner was usually the apparent resident, regardless of body size. Frogs from a high-density population were more aggressive than individuals from a low-density population. Subadult males were as aggressive and as likely to win encounters as adult males. The function of aggression seemed to be related to the bizarre reproductives behaviour observed in these frogs. There seemed to be male-male competition for mates, as the operational sex ratio strongly favoured males, oviposition was asynchronous, and amplexus lasted for at least several weeks. Female-female aggression may have been related to defence of foraging or shelter sites, but aggression towards males was likely to be an attempt to thwart unwanted amplexus.  相似文献

Previous results showed that male rats pubertally exposed to anabolic androgenic steroids (AAS) displayed aggression towards females in response to physical provocation. This experiment examined two factors that may modulate AAS-induced behavior towards females: olfactory cues and frustration. Gonadally intact males began one of three AAS treatments at puberty (D40): testosterone propionate (T), stanozolol (S), T+S, or vehicle control. To test for the relevance of olfactory cues in the elicitation of behavior toward females, a hidden neighbor paradigm was used. The proximal stimulus was an ovariectomized (OVX) female, estrogen plus progesterone (E+P) female, or an E+P female with tape-obstructed vagina (OBS). Distal olfactory cues from a hidden neighbor were delivered from a separate cage connected to the testing arena. The vaginally obstructed, sexually receptive female (OBS) was used to determine the effects of frustration on behavior by AAS males. Both sexual and aggressive behaviors were measured. The presence of distal olfactory cues had no effect on either sexual or aggressive behavior. In the presence of E+P and OBS females, all males displayed sex behaviors, not aggression. However, AAS males displayed significantly more aggression towards proximal OVX females than controls. AAS males mounted OBS females significantly more than controls, indicating a persistence of once rewarded behavior. These results suggest (1) proximal cues of the conspecific female are more salient than distal olfactory cues in determining behavior and (2) AAS males display frustration-induced persistence in response to vaginally obstructed receptive females.  相似文献

The influence of progesterone on sexual and aggressive behaviors during aggressive encounters was investigated in pairs of TP-treated male and female rats. Gonadectomized females, chronically injected with testosterone propionate (TP), showed low but consistent levels of feminine sexual behavior which alternated with aggression. Progesterone when given in addition to TP facilitated receptive and proceptive behaviors, but reduced levels of aggression. In TP-treated males, levels of aggression were the same as observed in TP-treated females. However, TP-treated males seldomly showed sexual behavior during aggressive encounters and additional treatment with progesterone did not affect their behavior. After the aggression tests, animals were tested in a social preference test in which an ovariectomized female cage mate and the opponent from the aggressive encounter served as incentives. Positive correlations between levels of aggression and social preference for an opponent were found in both sexes, although correlations only reached statistical significance when progesterone was given in addition to TP. These correlations were found in both sexes, despite the fact that group analysis revealed pronounced sex differences in social preference: males preferred to spend their time near ovariectomized female cage mates, whereas females divided their time equally among female cage mates and opponents.  相似文献

Cuticular substances on the body surface of crickets serve as pheromones that elicit a variety of different behaviors in male crickets. Antennal contact between males and females resulted in courtship behavior, and that between two males resulted in aggressive displays. As a first step in elucidating how crickets recognize and discriminate individuals, behavioral responses of male individuals to cuticular substances of conspecific males or females were investigated. The behavioral responses of males to antennal or palpal stimulation with an isolated antenna from a male or a female were recorded. To both antennal and palpal stimulation with female antennae, the majority of males responded with courtship behavior; to stimulation with male antennae, males responded with aggressive displays. To gain insight into the chemical nature of the behaviorally relevant components, isolated antennae were washed in either n-hexane, acetone or ethanol before behavior assays. Washed antennae no longer elicited courtship or aggressive responses in males. Next, polypropylene fibers were smeared with substances from the body surface of females and used for antennal stimulation. This experiment showed that the quality and quantity of cuticular substances appear to be highly age-dependent. Significantly more males responded with courtship behavior to cuticular substances from younger females. Isolated males generally showed higher levels of aggression than males reared in groups. Grouped males also were more likely to display courtship behavior towards antennae from younger females, and aggressive behavior towards antennae from older females. These results suggest that male discrimination of mating partners depends on the nature of female cuticular substances.  相似文献

观察了分娩后哺乳雌性棕色田鼠(Microtus mandarinus)与配偶分离7d、14d、21d后对配偶与陌生雄鼠的行为反应。结果发现,在频次和持续时间上,与配偶分离7d、14d、21d的雌鼠对配偶的攻击行为显著低于陌生雄鼠(P〈0.05);对配偶的嗅闻及友善行为显著高于陌生雄鼠(P〈0.05)。处于哺乳前、中、后期不同阶段的雌鼠对陌生雄鼠攻击水平没有显著性差异(P〉0.05)。这些结果说明,在整个哺乳期,雌鼠能够识别配偶,对配偶的记忆不因分离时间的增加而减弱,而且对陌生鼠的攻击水平不会因哺乳阶段的变化而变化,维持高水平的攻击可能与其较强的母性行为有关。  相似文献

Human studies suggest that anabolic androgenic steroid (AAS) users are aggressive towards women. This study used a rat model to evaluate whether AAS potentiated aggression towards females and the conditions under which this occurs. Gonadally intact pubertal male rats received one of the following AAS treatments (5 mg/kg s.c. 5 days/week for nine weeks): testosterone (T), stanozolol (S), testosterone + stanozolol (T + S), or vehicle control. Each rat was tested with 3 conspecific stimuli: ovariectomized females (OVX), estrogen only females (E), and estrogen + progesterone females (E + P). The response to physical provocation was tested under three conditions: without physical provocation, provocation of the experimental male, and provocation of the conspecific female. Provocation was a mild tail pinch. Both aggressive and sexual behaviors were measured during each test. In the absence of physical provocation, AAS males were not aggressive towards females. However, provocation significantly increased aggression in males treated with testosterone but only towards OVX females. In the presence of E or E + P females, all animals displayed sex behavior, not aggression. Thus, factors such as the nature of the AAS and the hormonal status of the females are important in determining whether male rats will be aggressive towards females. However, the most salient factor determining aggression towards females is the presence of provocation in combination with high levels of testosterone.  相似文献

The associations among aggression, testosterone (T), and reproductive success have been well studied, particularly in male birds. In many species, males challenged with simulated or real territorial intrusions increase T and levels of aggression, outcomes linked to higher dominance status and greater reproductive success. For females, the patterns are less clear. Females behave aggressively towards one another, and in some species, females respond to a social challenge with increases in T, but in other species they do not. Prior work on female dark-eyed juncos (Junco hyemalis) had shown that experimental elevation of T increases social status and intrasexual aggression. Here, we conducted two experiments designed to answer three questions: Are endogenous concentrations of T associated with dominance status in captive female juncos? Does dominance status influence readiness to breed in female juncos? And do captive females increase T in response to a challenge? In the first experiment, we introduced two females to a breeding aviary, allowed them to form a dominance relationship and then introduced a male. We found that dominant females were more likely to breed than subordinates, but that dominance status was not predicted by circulating T. In the second experiment, we allowed a resident male and female to establish ownership of a breeding aviary (territory) then introduced a second, intruder female. We found that resident females were aggressive towards and dominant over intruders, but T did not increase during aggressive interactions. We suggest that during the breeding season, intrasexual aggression between females may influence reproductive success, but not be dependent upon fluctuations in T. Selection may have favored independence of aggression from T because high concentrations of T could interfere with normal ovulation or produce detrimental maternal effects.  相似文献

Aggressive maternal behavior was tested by placing intruders in the home cages of 210 individually housed lactating mice 3-8 days postpartum. The intruders were of 6 types: castrated males and females, intact males and females, mothers of 3-8 day old pups, and mothers of older pups. All fights were initiated by the resident lactating female. There were significantly fewer attacks on castrated males than on intact males (p less than .001), and fewer attacks on castrated females than on intact males and females (p less than .001, p less than .01, respectively). There were no attacks on mothers of 3-8 day old pups. Attacks on older mothers were significantly more frequent than on younger mothers (p less than .01). The results indicate that maternal aggression in albino mice is strongly influenced by the hormonal and reproductive state of the intruder.  相似文献

In male golden hamsters, agonistic behavior matures during puberty, changing from play fighting to adult-like aggression. In addition, this transition is accelerated by repeated social subjugation early in puberty. However, little is known about the development of agonistic behavior in females. In the present study, we compared the development of agonistic behavior in male and female golden hamsters. Furthermore, we also tested the effects of repeated social subjugation on the development of agonistic behavior during puberty. Hamsters were tested for agonistic behavior in the presence of a smaller intruder at different intervals during puberty. Several observations were made. First, the frequency of attacks remained stable in females, while varying in males. Second, the transition from play fighting to adult-like aggression occurred at earlier time periods in females than in males. Finally, a clear transitional period marked by attacks focused on the flanks was observable in males around mid-puberty. However, this transitional period was not apparent in females. In addition, juvenile females were exposed to aggressive adult males or females. In both cases, repeated exposure to stress had no statistically significant effect on the development of agonistic behavior. After 2 weeks of subjugation, exposure to aggressive adults had no effect on serum cortisol levels, indicating that juvenile females habituate to repeated social stress. These data show significant sex differences in the development of agonistic behavior and adaptation to repeated stress in juvenile golden hamsters.  相似文献
