Citrus sudden death (CSD) is a new disease of sweet orange and mandarin trees grafted on Rangpur lime and Citrus volkameriana rootstocks. It was first seen in Brazil in 1999, and has since been detected in more than four million trees. The CSD causal agent is unknown and the current hypothesis involves a virus similar to Citrus tristeza virus or a new virus named Citrus sudden death-associated virus . CSD symptoms include generalized foliar discoloration, defoliation and root death, and, in most cases, it can cause tree death. One of the unique characteristics of CSD disease is the presence of a yellow stain in the rootstock bark near the bud union. This region also undergoes profound anatomical changes. In this study, we analyse the metabolic disorder caused by CSD in the bark of sweet orange grafted on Rangpur lime by nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) spectroscopy and imaging. The imaging results show the presence of a large amount of non-functional phloem in the rootstock bark of affected plants. The spectroscopic analysis shows a high content of triacylglyceride and sucrose, which may be related to phloem blockage close to the bud union. We also propose that, without knowing the causal CSD agent, the determination of oil content in rootstock bark by low-resolution NMR can be used as a complementary method for CSD diagnosis, screening about 300 samples per hour.  相似文献

Citrus sudden death (CSD) is a new disease that has killed approximately 1 million orange trees in Brazil. Here we report the identification of a new virus associated with the disease. RNAs isolated from CSD-affected and nonaffected trees were used to construct cDNA libraries. A set of viral sequences present exclusively in libraries of CSD-affected trees was used to obtain the complete genome sequence of the new virus. Phylogenetic analysis revealed that this virus is a new member of the genus Marafivirus. Antibodies raised against the putative viral coat proteins allowed detection of viral antigens of expected sizes in affected plants. Electron microscopy of purified virus confirmed the presence of typical isometric Marafivirus particles. The screening of 773 affected and nonaffected citrus trees for the presence of the virus showed a 99.7% correlation between disease symptoms and the presence of the virus. We also detected the virus in aphids feeding on affected trees. These results suggest that this virus is likely to be the causative agent of CSD. The virus was named Citrus sudden death-associated virus.  相似文献

An extensive survey in 1976-82 indicated that sudden death of cocoa was widespread in Papua New Guinea with losses up to 1% per month in trees over 10-yr-old, especially in neglected plantations. Over 95% trees affected had large Phytophthora palmivora canker lesions and over 90% of the cankers were invaded by bark beetles. In an intensive single year survey of one plot 18-8% of 69 healthy trees died. Ambrosiella spp., P. palmivora and Fusarium solani were isolated from wood surrounding beetle tunnels but only the last two caused extensive lesions when inoculated into the xylem of healthy trees. The evidence obtained indicated that the sudden death syndrome is initiated by P. palmivora cankers on trunks and main branches but bark beetles are a major contributory factor and fungi associated with their tunnels may contribute to the problem. There is a risk of further outbreaks of the disease as cocoa cultivars susceptible to P. palmivora continue to be planted.  相似文献

In the Netherlands, bacterial canker in plum trees (Prunus domestica) is a serious and recent problem in plum production. It is caused by Pseudomonas syringae pathovars syringae and morsprunorum. The trunks of the affected plum trees are girdled by bacterial cankers resulting in sudden death of infected trees in 3-4 years after planting. Disease incidences can be very high, and sometimes complete orchards have to be removed. Recently, plum cultivation in the Netherlands has changed from a relatively extensive into an intensive cultivation. However, due to the risks of losses of trees due to bacterial canker, growers are reluctant to plant new plum orchards. In general nurseries and fruit growers are not familiar with bacterial diseases and lack knowledge in order to prevent infections. Therefore, control strategies to manage plum decline have to be developed.  相似文献

The involvement of psychotropic drugs in sudden deaths has been highlighted. The objective of this work was to establish a link between selenium levels in heart tissue, psychotropic treatment and sudden death. Selenium levels were measured by electrothermal atomic absorption spectroscopy post-mortem in heart, brain and liver. Histological examination evidenced dilated cardiomyopathy in 45% of cases, left ventricular hypertrophy in 36%, and ischemic coronaropathy in 18%. A significant reduction of myocardial selenium levels compared to controls was seen in patients treated with neuroleptic drugs or meprobamate. No changes in brain or liver selenium levels were seen. These results suggest that selenium deficiency can facilitate sudden death in patients on psychotropic drugs. The reduced activity of glutathione peroxidase due to selenium deficiency can result in augmented oxidative stress in myocardial cells and myocardiopathy leading to sudden death.  相似文献

Plum decline was associated with Pseudomonas syringae pathovars syringae and morsprunorum in Baden‐Württemberg. The trunks of affected plum trees (Prunus domestica) were girdled by bacterial cankers resulting in sudden death of infected trees. Copper compounds that were applied extensively during leaf fall and bud burst, were not effective. A minority of P. syringae strains isolated from cankers on plum trees were moderately resistant, while most strains were sensitive to cupric ions. Invasions through blossoms, leaves and wounds during the vegetation period were limited to the infection sites and plum trees coped effectively with both P. syringae pathovars eliminating them eventually. Infections after dormancy including very rare leaf scar infections did not induce cankers on the trunk. However, infections of dormant trees through frost injuries, (pruning) wounds or non‐injurious ingress by freezing and thawing were serious, because they led to cankers girdling the trunk. Control strategies to manage plum decline have to be adapted to the disease cycle. They should concentrate on the dormant period beginning with early frosts in autumn and ending with bud burst.  相似文献

Sudden exposure of an aquatic system to an insecticide can have significant effects on populations other than susceptible organisms. Although this is intuitively obvious, little is actually known about how such exposure might affect bacterial communities and their relative metabolic activity in ecosystems. Here, we assessed small sub-unit (ssu)-RNA levels in open and shaded 9 m(3) aquatic mesocosms (16 units - 2 x 2 factorial design in quadruplicate) to examine the effects of sudden addition of deltamethrin to the units. When deltamethrin was added, a cascade of bacterial then phytoplankton "blooms" occurred over time. The bacterial bloom, which most likely included organisms from the plastid/cyanobacterial phylogenetic guild, was almost immediate (within hours), whereas the phytoplankton (algal) bloom lagged by about 4 days. This sequential response can be explained by an apparent sudden release of nutrients consequent to arthropod death that triggered a series of responses in the microbial loop. Interestingly, bacterial blooms were noted in both open and shaded mesocosms, whereas the algal bloom was only seen in open units, suggesting that both deltamethrin addition (and presumptive nutrient release) and an adequate light supply was required for the phytoplankton response. Overall, this work shows that microbial activities as reflected by ssu-rRNA levels can respond dramatically via apparently indirect effects following insecticide application.  相似文献

Relative conductivity (K) to water in healthy apple trees ranged from maximum values of 18.2 cm3.100 s-1.cm length.0.001 Pas.kPa-1.cm-2 xylem area, for major suberized roots to values of 1.6 for 1-yr-old twigs. The values for equivalent parts of healthy cherry trees were 26.3 and 3.3. Trees with roots affected by the larvae of the fruit tree root weevil (Leptopius squalidus) which causes either chronic growth decline or sudden wilting and death, had values as low as 1% of healthy trees, in those parts of the tree showing wilting and lack of growth. Water flow under pressure into the root systems of healthy apple trees increased linearly with increases in pressure from 200 to 800 kPa. Flows into dormant and active root systems respectively were 0.6 and 1.7 cm3.100 s-1. 100 cm2 root surface area. 100 kPa-1.  相似文献

The mango sudden death syndrome has become a serious threat to the mango industry and caused significant decline in mango production worldwide. The bark beetle Hypocryphalus mangiferae (Stebbing) (Coleoptera: Curculionidae: Scolytinae) has been suggested as a potential vector of the disease based primarily on field observations with little or no supporting empirical data. In this study, we investigated the role of infected mango trees in host attraction and colonization by H. mangiferae to determine if beetle attack and colonization contributes to the disease progression on mango trees. Initially, the role of various stress factors on beetle attraction and disease progression was assessed under lathe house conditions from 2008 to 2009. Results suggest that symptomatic or recently inoculated mango trees (without any obvious symptoms) are preferentially colonized by H. mangiferae. Although not significant, high numbers of beetles attacked stressed or wounded mango trees, compared to healthy or dead mango trees. Disease symptoms after beetle colonization, such as bark splitting, wilting and oozing, were further evaluated. These symptoms showed positive correlation with the degree of disease severity and host plant condition. Furthermore, two fungi, Ceratocystis fimbriata and Lasiodiplodia theobromae, were frequently isolated from the beetle and beetle-colonized trees. Based on these findings, they suggests that H. mangiferae can vector multiple fungi associated with mango sudden decline disease and play a significant role in outbreaks of this disease.  相似文献

In a period from 1982-2002 we noticed five dead among Croatian male physicians aged 34 to 67, during or after recreational physical exercise: swimming, soccer, tennis and jogging. Three of them who were autopsied, have been non-smokers and without previous symptoms. In all coronary heart disease was found. The left descending anterior artery was stenotic in one and occluded in two, with myocardial scars in one. An acute myocardial infarction was found in none of them, and in two-left ventricular hypertrophy 15 and 18 mm. We could not find a recent medical record in those physicians including a clinical finding and other findings. Two physicians who were not been autopsied, had possible an alcohol cardiomyopathy. Both of them were smokers. In Croatia about 7% of the whole population are engaged in recreational physical exercise. In a period of twenty years (1982-2002) we noticed 43 sudden and unexpected deaths during or immediately after physical exercise: it reached 43/6,300,000 sudden death in Croatia in twenty years or 2.15/315,000 yearly among persons engaged in physical exercise. In Croatia there are 4,957 male physicians-specialists, and a rate of sudden cardiac death during or immediately after physical exercise in this group reached 5/99,140 in 20 years or 1/19,828 every four years. A medical check up before recreational physical exercise is essential including a clinical examination, a serum concentration of risk factors and other risk factors, an electrocardiogram at rest, a stress test and echocardiography in clinical indication, as are medical controls over persons taking exercise. This study shows that medical evaluation is important because of the underlying problems such as sudden death during exercise. In non-trained persons and in the elderly a physical exercise should be recommended of a gradually intensity, which could not exceed 6 METs.  相似文献

Identifying the young patient at risk of malignant arrhythmias and sudden cardiac death remains a challenge. It is increasingly recognised that sudden death, syncope and aborted cardiac arrest at a young age in patients with a structurally normal heart may be the result of various ion channel disorders - the channelopathies. The approach to risk stratification involves a combination of the clinical presentation, taken in conjunction with the family history, genetic testing, invasive electrophysiological studies or other provocative tests where appropriate and feasible. A logical approach to risk stratification in some of the commoner channelopathies seen in paediatric practice is presented.  相似文献

Over the past decade, there has been a significant decrease in the hospital mortality of patients with coronary artery disease. However, sudden cardiac death, which accounts for the majority of deaths from coronary artery disease, hasbeen little affected. This report reviews the pathology, electrophysiology, demographics and clinical presentation of sudden cardiac death. Emergency care and possible preventative measures are examined.  相似文献

Abundance and diversity of fungi in naturally formed knots of Pinus sylvestris affected by Porodaedalea pini were investigated. Samples were taken from trees that were (i) affected, with internal heartwood decay and no conks, (ii) affected, with internal heartwood decay and conks and (iii) controls. The Illumina sequencing technology was used for amplification of DNA, sequencing and analysis. In total, 566,279 raw sequences were obtained from six samples. Sequences included 74% of culturable and 8.4% of non‐culturable fungi and 17.6% of organisms with no reference sequences in NCBI. Abundance of organisms in knotwood, measured as number of OTUs, ranged from 36,272 (29,506 for fungi) to 178,535 (177,484 for fungi) and differed significantly between two trees in a stand and between stands. The highest and lowest average number of fungal OTUs occurred in infected trees with no conks and in trees with conks, respectively. Number of taxa ranged from 171 to 415 and often differed significantly between two trees in one stand and between stands. Greatest diversity occurred in control trees. The number of fungal taxa shared by two trees in one stand was 67–152 and that shared by two stands was 51–141. The majority of fungi were Ascomycota. Those most common in pines affected by P. pini were Coniochaeta hoffmannii and Cfodinicola (19.65%–59.92%). Infundichalara microchona, Leotiomycetes spp. and Rhinocladiella atrovirens were also present. Another common species, Lecanora conizaeoides, occurred most often in control trees (0.30%–8.82%). Porodaedalea pini was detected only sporadically. Non‐culturable fungi were most frequent in the control trees. The greater average abundance and smaller average diversity of fungi in knots of trees infected by P. pini suggest that the pathogen successfully competes with some fungal species and does not inhibit the growth of survivors. Some fungi detected may contribute to production of natural biocides.  相似文献

The soil Coleoptera community was sampled with pitfall traps in shaded and unshaded coffee agroecosystems in Veracruz, Mexico. The insect collection resulted in a total of 31 species which belong to nine families. The most frequent families collected in this study (in terms of species and number of organisms) were Scarabaeidae and Carabidae.Species diversity was measured using the Hill's family of diversity numbers. The Coleoptera community was more diverse in shaded than in unshaded coffee. Also, the collected organisms were more evenly distributed between species in shaded coffee. The diversity of the scarab beetles was shown to be strongly affected by the degree of forest perturbation. The richness and evenness of scarab beetles was correlated with the diversity of shade trees present in coffee agro-ecosystems; scarab richness drops from 19 species collected in virgin tropical rain-forests, to five species in polyspecific shade (more than ten species of shade trees) and six species in monogeneric shade (three species of shade trees) coffee agro-ecosystems, and to three scarab species in unshaded coffee. Evenness in scarab beetles follows a similar pattern: a single species tends to gradually become dominant as more shade trees are removed from the agro-ecosystem. It is suggested that some shade trees should be preserved within the agro-ecosystem during the intensification of coffee production in Mexico.  相似文献

The etiology of sudden infant death syndrome (SIDS) is unknown but thought to be multifactorial. Several animal models have been developed that induce death without pre-existing symptoms and with pathology similar to that seen in SIDS infants; however, the relevance of these animal models to the events leading to SIDS remains elusive, in part because animal models are as varied as the potential causes of SIDS. In addition, it is difficult to find an animal model that can accurately reflect the genetic, developmental and environmental risk factors for SIDS. Comparisons between species can prove difficult but animal models provide a useful tool for evaluating potential mechanisms related to sudden unexplained death. This review focuses on models developed to examine the association of infection and inflammation with mechanisms proposed to explain sudden unexplained death.  相似文献

Competitive sports activity is associated with an increased risk of sudden cardiovascular death in adolescents and young adults with inherited cardiomyopathies. Many young subjects aspire to continue competitive sport after a diagnosis of cardiomyopathy and the clinician is frequently confronted with the problem of eligibility and the request of designing specific exercise programs. Since inherited cardiomyopathies are the leading cause of sudden cardiovascular death during sports performance, a conservative approach implying disqualification of affected athletes from most competitive athletic disciplines is recommended by all the available international guidelines. On the other hand, we know that the health benefits of practicing recreational sports activity can overcome the potential arrhythmic risk in these patients, provided that the type and level of exercise are tailored on the basis of the specific risk profile of the underlying cardiomyopathy. This article will review the available evidence on the sports-related risk of sudden cardiac death and the recommendations regarding eligibility of individuals affected by inherited cardiomyopathies for sports activities.  相似文献

Extreme climatic events are key factors in initiating gradual or sudden changes in forest ecosystems through the promotion of severe, tree-killing disturbances such as fire, blowdown, and widespread insect outbreaks. In contrast to these climatically-incited disturbances, little is known about the more direct effect of drought on tree mortality, especially in high-elevation forests. Therefore projections of drought-induced mortality under future climatic conditions remain uncertain. For a subalpine forest landscape in the Rocky Mountains of northern Colorado (USA), we quantified lag effects of drought on mortality of Engelmann spruce Picea engelmannii , subalpine fir Abies lasiocarpa , and lodgepole pine Pinus contorta . For the period 1910–2004, we related death dates of 164 crossdated dead trees to early-season and late-season droughts. Following early-season droughts, spruce mortality increased over five years and fir mortality increased sharply over 11 years. Following late-season droughts, spruce showed a small increase in mortality within one year, whereas fir showed a consistent period of increased mortality over two years. Pine mortality was not affected by drought. Low pre-drought radial growth rates predisposed spruce and fir to drought-related mortality. Spruce and fir trees that died during a recent drought (2000–2004) had significantly lower pre-drought growth rates than live neighbour trees. Overall, we found large interspecific differences in drought-related mortality with fir showing the strongest effect followed by spruce and pine. This direct influence of climatic variability on differential tree mortality has the potential for driving large-scale changes in subalpine forests of the Rocky Mountains.  相似文献

'Regrowth dieback', a disease of Eucalyptus obliqua and E. regnans is causing serious degradation of high yield, even-aged, regrowth forest in south-eastern Tasmania. Dieback symptoms in crowns of diseased trees were first observed in the region in 1964 and since then the disease has continued to develop. Visual symptoms of the disease can be discerned only in crowns of dominant and co-dominant trees since sub-dominant and suppressed trees show similar symptoms due to normal stand competition. This work shows that for increment periods which finished in 1958 or earlier, basal area increments of dominant and co-dominant trees from a number of growth plots in the region were slightly lower in trees which were affected by the disease in 1971 than in those which were not. There were much larger reductions in increments of affected trees measured in increment periods which finished in 1960 or later. It was concluded that an agent very damaging to forest health appeared in the region in 1959 or early 1960. This coincides with the start of a period of several years of unusually dry summers in the region. These findings conform with an earlier suggestion that the disease may have been initiated by drought with secondary damage by the root-rotting fungus Armillaria sp. and/or the defoliating beetle Chrysophtharta bimaculata . The fungus is ubiquitous in the region and has frequently been associated with decayed roots of affected trees. The beetle is believed to have caused episodic tree defoliation in the region. It is suggested that the secondary agents normally cause death or ill-health of a few trees in otherwise healthy forest. Physiological weakening of trees by drought may have allowed the effects of these agents to increase substantially after 1959.  相似文献

Coronary arteries affected by atherosclerosis and its myocardial related damage in cardiac and non-cardiac sudden death subjects (152 and 98, respectively) including a low atherosclerosis group (250 subjects) were studied in autopsy material applying a new well standardized atherometric system. A high statistical significance of all variables of this system was found between the groups studied.  相似文献

A prospective study was carried out over the 10 years 1978-87 to determine the incidence and implications of sudden death in road users--that is, drivers, pedestrians, cyclists, and motorcyclists. During the study period 30,000 patients were seen in the same accident and emergency departments of East Berkshire after road traffic incidents or accidents, of whom 267 either were brought in dead or died within two hours after arrival. Of these patients, 64 (24%) were found to have died of natural causes due to pre-existing disease or to have been killed in an incident that occurred as a result of a medical or psychiatric condition. Twelve of the patients sustained physical injury; all 64 came to necropsy. Only one incident resulted in the death of another person in addition to the natural death of a patient. It is concluded that sudden natural death occurring in road users does not present an appreciable hazard to other road users.  相似文献
