Freshwater mollusks are highly imperiled, with 70% of the North American species extinct, endangered, or at risk of extinction. Impoundments and other human impacts on the Coosa River of Alabama, Georgia and Tennessee of the southeastern USA alone are believed to have caused 50 mollusk species extinctions, but uncertainty over boundaries among several putatively closely related species makes this number preliminary. Our examination of freshwater mussels collected during an extensive survey of the upper-drainage basin, DNA barcoding and molecular phylogenetic analyses confirm the rediscovery of four morphospecies in the genus Pleurobema (Unionidae) previously thought to be extinct from the upper Coosa basin. A fifth 'extinct' form was found in an adjoining basin. Molecular data show that the Coosa morphologies represent at least three species-level taxa: Pleurobema decisum, P. hanleyianum and P. stabile. Endemism is higher than currently recognized, both at the species level and for multispecies clades. Prompt conservation efforts may preserve some of these taxa and their ecosystem.  相似文献

1. Unionid mussels are highly threatened, but little is known about genetic structure in populations of these organisms. We used allozyme electrophoresis to examine partitioning of genetic variation in three locally abundant and widely distributed species of mussels from a catchment in Ohio. 2. Within‐population variation was similar to that previously reported for freshwater mussels, but genotype frequencies exhibited heterozygote deficiencies in many instances. All three species exhibited significant among‐population variation. Evidence of isolation‐by‐distance was found in Elliptio dilatata and Ptychobranchus fasciolaris, while Lampsilis siliquoidea showed no geographical pattern of among‐population variation. 3. Our results suggest that the isolating effects of genetic drift were greater in L. siliquoidea than in the other species. Differentiation of populations occurred at a much smaller spatial scale than has previously been found in freshwater mussels. Differences among species may reflect differences in the dispersal abilities of fishes that serve as hosts for the glochidia larvae of mussels. 4. Based on our results, we hypothesise that species of mussels that are common to large rivers exhibit relatively large amounts of within‐population genetic variation and little differentiation over large geographical distances. Conversely, species typical of small streams show lower within‐population genetic variation and populations will be more isolated. If this hypothesis can be supported, it may prove useful in the design of conservation strategies that maintain the genetic structure of target species.  相似文献

SUMMARY. 1. The diet of Phagocata vitta, Crenobia alpina and Polycelis felina in a Welsh stream was examined, using a serologicat technique, at monthly intervals over 18 months.
2. For each triclad species, dietary composition changed little with time or increasing body size, and overall feeding intensity was greatest in summer and least in winter.
3. Alt species fed most heavily on oligochaetes, chironomids and Gammarus. Phagocata vitta fed lightly on Plecoptera, Trichoptera and Ephemeroptera whilst the other two triclad species fed substantially on the first two of these prey categories.
4. Food niche breadth indices indicated a wide diet for all species with some specialization in some months. Electivity indices showed positive electivity for oligochaetes and chironomids by all species and for Plecoptera by C. alpina and P. felina .
5. Diets overlapped and none had a food refuge: therefore the potential for interspecific competition for food exists.  相似文献

Most species of freshwater mussels (Unionoida) show a wide variability in shell form and size but an understanding of which factors determine unionoid morphology is poor. We identified ecophenotypic trends in shell and internal characters within three unionoid species from two habitat types (marinas and river) of the River Thames, UK, using traditional and modern morphometric techniques. In marinas, all species grew to larger maximum sizes than in the river, which might be a result of higher temperatures and phytoplankton densities in marinas. Unio pictorum in marinas was more elongated than in the river and Fourier shape analysis revealed a trend from dorsally arched river specimens to straight dorsal and pointed posterior margins in marina individuals. The degree of shell elongation and shape of dorso‐posterior margin were not associated with sediment composition, but were associated with the different hydrological characters of the two habitat types. Relative shell width was a poor indicator of collection site and influenced by allometric growth. Unlike U. pictorum, a difference in shell elongation of marina and river mussels could not be detected in Unio tumidus and Anodonta anatina. However, all three species showed the same trends regarding the shape of the dorso‐posterior shell margin. This shell character may thus have broad ecological significance and could have considerable utility to palaeontologists, taxonomists, and conservation biologists. © 2009 The Linnean Society of London, Biological Journal of the Linnean Society, 2009, 98 , 814–825.  相似文献

Geographical gradients in species richness and the degree to which different taxa show congruent patterns remain unknown for many taxonomic groups. Here, I examined broad-scale species richness patterns in five groups of freshwater organisms; macrophytes, dragonflies, stoneflies, aquatic beetles and fishes. The analyses were based on provincial distribution records in Denmark, Norway, Sweden and Finland. In general, variation in species richness across provinces was concordant among the groups, but stoneflies showed weaker negative relationships with the other taxonomic groups. Species richness in most groups decreased with increasing latitude and altitude, and a considerable part of the variation was explained by mean July temperature. However, stoneflies showed a reversed pattern, with species richness correlating positively, albeit more weakly, with mean provincial altitude. Nevertheless, combined species richness of all five taxa showed a strong relationship with mean July temperature, accounting for 74% of variation in provincial species richness alone. Such temperature-controlled patterns suggest that regional freshwater biodiversity will strongly respond to climate change, with repercussions for local community organization in freshwater ecosystems in Fennoscandia.  相似文献

Correct species identification and delineation are crucial for effective conservation and management. However, species delineation can be problematic in the presence of morphological ambiguities due to phenotypic plasticity, convergence, and/or interspecific hybridization. Here, we investigated the degree of hybridization between two closely related freshwater mussel species [Bivalvia: Unionidae; Lampsilis siliquoidea (Barnes) and L. radiata (Gmelin)] that present intermediate forms in areas of sympatry. Unionids have a distinct form of mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA) inheritance, termed doubly uniparental inheritance (DUI) where female mtDNA (F-type) is transmitted to all progeny but male mtDNA (M-type) is mostly inherited by the males resulting in mostly homoplasmic females and heteroplasmic males. An individual was identified as hybrid when F-type and M-type mtDNA of the two different species were found in the same individual. Twelve out of 116 sequenced males were identified as hybrids indicating that these species hybridize where their geographic range overlaps in the lower Great Lakes and St. Lawrence basins. Microsatellite analyses further support the occurrence of hybridization but at a larger spatial scale than indicated by the mitochondrial analyses. We also found that strong within-species population genetic structure affects the detection of purebred individuals overestimating the number of hybrids. Given the large geographic scale and proportion of hybrids found in this study, natural hybridization and introgression need to be considered when implementing local biodiversity inventories, identifying waterbodies as source of organisms for relocation and restoration projects and when setting appropriate conservation policies.Subject terms: Evolutionary genetics, Genetic hybridization  相似文献

Ecological communities consist of a large number of species. Most species are rare or have low abundance, and only a few are abundant and/or frequent. In quantitative community analysis, abundant species are commonly used to interpret patterns of habitat disturbance or ecosystem degradation. Rare species cause many difficulties in quantitative analysis by introducing noises and bulking datasets, which is worsened by the fact that large datasets suffer from difficulties of data handling. In this study we propose a method to reduce the size of large datasets by selecting the most ecologically representative species using a self organizing map (SOM) and structuring index (SI). As an example, we used diatom community data sampled at 836 sites with 941 species throughout the French hydrosystem. Out of the 941 species, 353 were selected. The selected dataset was effectively classified according to the similarities of community assemblages in the SOM map. Compared to the SOM map generated with the original dataset, the community pattern gave a very similar representation of ecological conditions of the sampling sites, displaying clear gradients of environmental factors between different clusters. Our results showed that this computational technique can be applied to preprocessing data in multivariate analysis. It could be useful for ecosystem assessment and management, helping to reduce both the list of species for identification and the size of datasets to be processed for diagnosing the ecological status of water courses.  相似文献

Regional patterns of mussel species distributions in North American rivers   总被引:3,自引:0,他引:3

North American freshwater mussels are a highly threatened group with half of the fauna already federally listed as threatened or endangered candidates for listing, or believed extinct Using data from 16 river systems I examined distributional attributes of mussel species to gain insight into the importance of regional-scale processes vs local-scale processes to species distribution patterns There was no evidence of density compensation or saturation which would have indirectly indicated that competition was important in structuring mussel communities Rather there was a positive correlation between summed species densities and regional richness, indicating that regional forces may be strongly contributing to community structure Incidence, abundance and nestedness patterns all indicated a hierarchical niche structure for these mussel assemblages I hypothesize that these hierarchical patterns may be the result of differences in colonization potentials among mussel species as a result of different fish-host requirements among mussels, and of the abundance and distribution of those host fishes  相似文献

Species are a fundamental unit of biology, and defining accurate species boundaries is integral to effective conservation and management of imperiled taxa. Freshwater mussels (Bivalvia: Unionidae) are among the most imperiled groups of organisms in North America, yet species boundaries remain uncertain for many taxa. The False Spike, Fusconaia mitchelli (Simpson in Dall, 1895), is a freshwater mussel considered to be endemic to central Texas (Brazos, Colorado, and Guadalupe drainages). Recent research revealed significant intraspecific genetic variation between geographically separated populations of Fmitchelli, which could be indicative of speciation; however, small sample sizes for several of the populations precluded formal taxonomic revision. Here, we increase taxon sampling and use multilocus DNA sequence data and traditional morphometrics to re‐evaluate species boundaries in Fmitchelli. We sequenced three loci: the protein‐coding mitochondrial DNA genes cytochrome c oxidase subunit 1 and NADH dehydrogenase 1, and the nuclear internal transcribed spacer 1. Phylogenetic analyses depicted deep genetic divergence between Fmitchelli in the Guadalupe and those in the Brazos and Colorado drainages, which was further supported by available biogeographic information. Morphometric analyses and coalescent‐based species delimitation models integrating both DNA sequence and morphological data provided strong support for the divergence observed between the two geographically isolated clades of Fmitchelli. Based on these results, we revise taxonomy accordingly by elevating the junior synonym Fusconaia iheringi (Wright, 1898) to represent the Brazos and Colorado populations and restrict the distribution of Fmitchelli to the Guadalupe River drainage. Our findings may impact pending management decisions to protect Fmitchelli under the U.S. Endangered Species Act.  相似文献

Invasive species are a cause for concern in natural and economic systems and require both monitoring and management. There is a trade‐off between the amount of resources spent on surveying for the species and conducting early management of occupied sites, and the resources that are ultimately spent in delayed management at sites where the species was present but undetected. Previous work addressed this optimal resource allocation problem assuming that surveys continue despite detection until the initially planned survey effort is consumed. However, a more realistic scenario is often that surveys stop after detection (i.e., follow a “removal” sampling design) and then management begins. Such an approach will indicate a different optimal survey design and can be expected to be more efficient. We analyze this case and compare the expected efficiency of invasive species management programs under both survey methods. We also evaluate the impact of mis‐specifying the type of sampling approach during the program design phase. We derive analytical expressions that optimize resource allocation between monitoring and management in surveillance programs when surveys stop after detection. We do this under a scenario of unconstrained resources and scenarios where survey budget is constrained. The efficiency of surveillance programs is greater if a “removal survey” design is used, with larger gains obtained when savings from early detection are high, occupancy is high, and survey costs are not much lower than early management costs at a site. Designing a surveillance program disregarding that surveys stop after detection can result in an efficiency loss. Our results help guide the design of future surveillance programs for invasive species. Addressing program design within a decision‐theoretic framework can lead to a better use of available resources. We show how species prevalence, its detectability, and the benefits derived from early detection can be considered.  相似文献

Historical‐to‐recent climate change and anthropogenic disturbance affect species distributions and genetic structure. The Rio Grande watershed of the United States and Mexico encompasses ecosystems that are intensively exploited, resulting in substantial degradation of aquatic habitats. While significant anthropogenic disturbances in the Rio Grande are recent, inhospitable conditions for freshwater organisms likely existed prior to such disturbances. A combination of anthropogenic and past climate factors may contribute to current distributions of aquatic fauna in the Rio Grande basin. We used mitochondrial DNA and 18 microsatellite loci to infer evolutionary history and genetic structure of an endangered freshwater mussel, Popenaias popeii, throughout the Rio Grande drainage. We estimated spatial connectivity and gene flow across extant populations of P. popeii and used ecological niche models (ENMs) and approximate Bayesian computation (ABC) to infer its evolutionary history during the Pleistocene. structure results recovered regional and local population clusters in the Rio Grande. ENMs predicted drastic reductions in suitable habitat during the last glacial maximum. ABC analyses suggested that regional population structure likely arose in this species during the mid‐to‐late Pleistocene and was followed by a late Pleistocene population bottleneck in New Mexico populations. The local population structure arose relatively recently, perhaps due to anthropogenic factors. Popenaias popeii, one of the few freshwater mussel species native to the Rio Grande basin, is a case study for understanding how both geological and anthropogenic factors shape current population genetic structure. Conservation strategies for this species should account for the fragmented nature of contemporary populations.  相似文献

A threatened but under-studied component offreshwater biodiversity in North America is thenative freshwater mussels (Bivalvia:Unionoidea: Margaritiferidae and Unionidae). Genetic data suggest that these mussel speciesgenerally exhibit levels of variability similarto other invertebrates. We surveyed allozymevariation in the Louisiana Pearlshell, Margaritifera hembeli (Margaritiferidae), athreatened freshwater mussel. Five examinedpopulations are monomorphic for 25 allozymeloci, the first report of a native freshwatermussel species with extensive allozymemonomorphism. Low genetic diversity appears tobe characteristic of margaritiferids, as anANOVA indicated that mussels of the familyMargaritiferidae have significantly lowerlevels of heterozygosity than the mussels ofthe family Unionidae. Margaritiferids havestrong habitat preferences and modification ofhabitat leads to rapid loss of populations.Although bottlenecks are known to cause lowgenetic variability, margaritiferids mayexhibit meta-population structure withextinction/re-colonization dynamics leading tolow genetic variability. Margaritiferidsgenerally exhibit a patchy distribution with acolonization rate that is approximately twicethat of extinction. Tests of themetapopulation hypothesis will requireadditional allozyme population genetic data aswell as hypervariable microsatellite loci.  相似文献

DNA microarrays may be used to identify microbial species present in environmental and clinical samples. However, automated tools for reliable species identification based on observed microarray hybridization patterns are lacking. We present an algorithm, E-Predict, for microarray-based species identification. E-Predict compares observed hybridization patterns with theoretical energy profiles representing different species. We demonstrate the application of the algorithm to viral detection in a set of clinical samples and discuss its relevance to other metagenomic applications.  相似文献

Sargassum muticum was first observed in Scandinavia in Limfjorden (Denmark) in 1984, where it is now the most abundant and conspicuous macroalga. Despite the ecological importance of Sargassum, few studies have described seasonal patterns within Scandinavian Sargassum beds. We quantified the dynamics of macroalgae among years and seasons along a depth transect through a typical Sargassum bed in Limfjorden. The annual investigations (summer transects 1989–1999) showed a gradual increase in the dominance of Sargassum, especially at the 2–4-m depth interval. Significant seasonal dynamics in macroalgal abundance and assemblage structure were observed in this depth interval; the mean cover of Sargassum varied from ca. 5% (autumn and winter) to 25% (mid-summer). In comparison, encrusting algae had high and relatively stable covers throughout the year (ca. 20%). Other perennial macroalgae had low mean covers (<2%) characterized by a few patches of higher abundances. Except from a spring bloom, filamentous algae had low covers throughout the year. Within this relatively uniform bed, Sargassum abundance was positively related to boulders >10 cm in diameter and species richness was negatively correlated to depth and stones <10 cm in diameter, and non-correlated to other algal form-groups or grazer densities. Thus, in Limfjorden, the distribution of Sargassum is determined by large- (>6 m) and small-scale (<1 m) depth differences where low light limits Sargassum at depth, physical disturbance and sediment stress limits Sargasum in shallow waters, and the presence of stable boulder substratum facilitate Sargassum. Competition for space from other macroalgae and herbivory are probably of minor importance.  相似文献

River environments are characterized by extreme spatial and temporal variation in the physical environment. The relationship of fish assemblages to environmental variation is poorly understood in many systems. In Chile zonation patterns of fish assemblages have been documented in several Andean river drainages. Coastal river drainages are comparatively small, but inordinately important because of their highly endemic flora and fauna and their proximity to major human populations. For conservation purposes it is important to understand what environmental factors affect assemblage structure of fishes especially in the comparatively high diversity coastal drainages. We studied patterns of fish distribution and abundance in three rivers of the coastal, Andalien drainage near Concepción, Chile. We used multi-dimensional scaling analyses to compare patterns among zones (rithron, transition and potamon) and high and low flow seasons. Species assemblages differed by zone, but not with season. Assemblages consisted of nested subsets of species characterized by their range of distribution among zones. One species group was composed of widespread species that occurred in all three zones, another species group consisted of species found only in transitional and potamal zones, and a final group was comprised of species found only in the potamal zone. The potamal zone contained the most diverse and abundant fish assemblage. Fish assemblages were related to both water quality and habitat structure variables. This study suggests that the key to conserving the diversity of native fish communities in coastal Chilean rivers is in the conservation of potamal regions. Unfortunately, most protected areas in Chile are in the depauperate headwaters of drainages. Protection of only headwaters is clearly inadequate and will not contribute to the conservation of this unique freshwater fish fauna.  相似文献

Closely related species with different physiological tolerances and distributions make ideal systems for documenting range shifts in response to a changing climate. Mytilus edulis, M. trossulus, and M. galloprovincialis are sibling species of marine mussels with distinct biogeographical ranges that are correlated with sea surface temperatures. We determined the scope for growth of these three species at a range of temperatures to determine if energetics could predict their distributions. Scope for growth (SFG) represents energy available for growth and/or reproduction above that necessary for maintenance requirements. The SFG of M. galloprovincialis, the species known to inhabit the warmest habitats, was shifted towards warmer temperatures compared to the other two species, remaining positive until nearly 30 °C. M. edulis, a cold-temperate species, maintained a positive SFG up to 23 °C. M. trossulus, a boreal species, generally was not able to maintain a positive SFG above 17 °C. The warm end of each species’ range correlated strongly with the point at which that species’ SFG became negative in summer and fall. Energetics at cold temperatures did not predict the cold end of the species’ ranges, as there was no clear SFG advantage to explain the dominance of M. trossulus in cold habitats. As sea surface temperatures continue to warm with climate change, the energetics of these three species provide a basis for developing mechanistic models predicting future distribution and productivity changes in mussel populations.  相似文献

Gillnet size selectivity was studied for freshwater fish species, based on experimental fishing trials carried out with multimesh gillnets in lentic freshwater systems in Northern Greece. Selectivity estimates were based on a large range of mesh sizes, i.e. more than 10 different mesh sizes ranging from 8 to 90 mm bar length. Results showed that the model, in which both mean and standard deviation of the curve were defined as a linear function of the mesh size, revealed the best fit. For seven (i.e. Αlburnus sp. Volvi, Aspius aspius, Carassius gibelio, Lepomis gibbosus, Pachychilon macedonicum, Squalius prespensis and Vimba melanops) of the 11 studied species and the hybrid (Alburnus belvica × Rutilus prespensis), gillnet selectivity parameters were estimated for the first time, contributing to the evaluation of gillnet fisheries' impacts on fish species populations and consequently to fisheries management and species conservation.  相似文献
