The physiological reason that higher plants are green is unknown. Other photosynthetic organisms utilize pigments that strongly absorb green light; therefore, there must have been natural forces that ‘selected’ the photosynthetic pigments found in higher plants. Based on previously published data and our recent findings about green light and photosynthesis within leaves (Sun et al.), a specific functional role is described for the primary photosynthetic pigments of higher plants, that were derived from green algal progenitors. The particular absorptive characteristics of chlorophylls a and b appear to perform two contradictory, but necessary functions in higher plants. Firstly, chlorophylls a and b absorb light for maximum utilization under non‐saturating conditions, a function that is well understood. Secondly, they can act as protective pigments under over‐saturating light conditions, when absorbed light is dissipated as heat. Under such conditions, a significant portion of light can also be efficiently utilized, especially in the bottom portion of the leaf, that is mainly illuminated by green light and not down‐regulated. The second function may have been the selective force that gave rise to the extremely successful terrestrial plants, that evolved from green algae.  相似文献

It is well known that leaf photosynthesis per unit dry mass (Amass) is positively correlated with nitrogen concentration (Nmass) across naturally growing plants. In this article we show that this relationship is paradoxical because, if other traits are identical among species, plants with a higher Amass should have a lower Nmass, because of dilution by the assimilated carbon. To find a factor to overcome the dilution effect, we analyze the Nmass–Amass relationship using simple mathematical models and literature data. We propose two equations derived from plant-growth models. Model prediction is compared with the data set of leaf trait spectrum obtained on a global scale. The model predicts that plants with a higher Amass should have a higher specific nitrogen absorption rate in roots (SAR), less biomass allocation to leaves, and/or greater nitrogen allocation to leaves. From the literature survey, SAR is suggested as the most likely factor. If SAR is the sole factor maintaining the positive relationship between Nmass and Amass, the variation in SAR is predicted to be much greater than that in Amass; given that Amass varies 130-fold, SAR may vary more than 2000-fold. Anecdotal evidence from many hunter-gatherer societies suggests that successful hunters experience higher prestige and greater reproductive success. Detailed quantitative data on these patterns are now available for five widely dispersed cases (Ache, Hadza, !Kung, Lamalera, and Meriam) and indicate that better hunters exhibit higher age-corrected reproductive success than other men in their social group. Leading explanations to account for this pattern are: (1) direct provisioning of hunters’ wives and offspring, (2) dyadic reciprocity, (3) indirect reciprocity, (4) costly signaling, and (5) phenotypic correlation. I examine the qualitative and quantitative evidence bearing on these explanations and conclude that although none can be definitively rejected, extensive and apparently unconditional sharing of large game somewhat weakens the first three explanations. The costly signaling explanation has support in some cases, although the exact nature of the benefits gained from mating or allying with or deferring to better hunters needs further study. Physical CO(2) diffusion from sub-stomatal cavities to the chloroplasts where photosynthesis takes place is an important limitation of photosynthesis largely neglected in research related to global climate change. This limitation is particularly important in leaves with robust structures such as evergreen sclerophylls. In these leaves, photosynthesis is less sensitive to changes in stomatal openness, which is considered to be the primary limitation of photosynthesis. In this review we state that, because of large limitations in internal diffusion in C(3) plants, photosynthesis and the intrinsic efficiency of the use of plant water responds more strongly to elevated levels of CO(2) in leaves with more robust structures. This provides an additional explanation for the current apparent expansion of evergreen sclerophylls in many Earth ecosystems, and adds a new perspective to research of the biological effects of increasing atmospheric CO(2).  相似文献

Habitat fragmentation is a major threat to the maintenance of genetic diversity in many plant populations. Genetic effects of population size have received far more attention than the effects of isolation—or connectivity—but both are key components of the fragmentation process. To analyze the consequences of fragment size and connectivity on the neutral genetic variation and population genetic structure of the dominant gypsophile Lepidium subulatum, we selected 20 fragments along two continuous gradients of size and degree of isolation in a fragmented gypsum landscape of Central Spain. We used eight polymorphic microsatellite markers, and analyzed a total of 344 individuals. Populations were characterized by high levels of genetic diversity and low inbreeding coefficients, which agrees with the mainly outcrossing system of L. subulatum and its high abundance in gypsum landscapes. Bayesian clustering methods, pairwise F ST values and analysis of molecular variance revealed low among-population differentiation, with no significant isolation by distance. However, several genetic diversity indices such as allelic richness, number of effective alleles, expected heterozygosity and number of private alleles were negatively related to population isolation. The higher genetic diversity found on more connected fragments suggests higher rates of gene flow among more connected populations. Overall, our results highlight that fragmentation can have important effects on intra-population genetic processes even for locally abundant, dominant species. This, together with previously documented effects of connectivity on fitness of gypsophile species highlights the importance of including habitat connectivity in management and conservation strategies of this type of semiarid systems.  相似文献

Most current knowledge about DNA polymerase zeta (pol ζ) comes from studies of the enzyme in the budding yeast Saccharomyces cerevisiae, where pol ζ consists of a complex of the catalytic subunit Rev3 with Rev7, which associates with Revl. Most spontaneous and induced mutagenesis in yeast is dependent on these gene products, and yeast pol can mediate translesion DNA synthesis past some adducts in DNA templates. Study of the homologous gene products in higher eukaryotes is in a relatively early stage, but additional functions for the eukaryotic proteins are already apparent. Suppression of vertebrate REV3L function not only reduces induced point mutagenesis but also causes larger-scale genome instability by raising the frequency of spontaneous chromosome translocations. Disruption of Rev3L function is tolerated in Drosophila, Arabidopsis, and in vertebrate cell lines under some conditions, but is incompatible with mouse embryonic development. Functions for REV3L and REV7(MAD2B) in higher eukaryotes have been suggested not only in translesion DNA synthesis but also in some forms of homologous recombination, repair of interstrand DNA crosslinks, somatic hypermutation of immunoglobulin genes and cell-cycle control. A study was made of the higher alcohols (fusel oils) produced during the Indonesian tapé ketan fermentation using Amylomyces rouxii as the principal mold, alone or in combination with yeasts belonging to genera commonly found in the tapé ketan fermentation (Endomycopsis, Candida, and Hansenula). Total fusel oils increased with length of fermentation. Fusel oils detected in the product distillate included isobutanol and isoamyl and active amyl alcohols. No n-propanol was detected. Isobutanol and isoamyl alcohols were formed in the largest amounts. A. rouxii alone produced nearly the same quantity of fusel oils (total production, 275 mg/liter at 192 h) as it did in combination with Endomycopsis burtonii (total production, 292 mg/liter at 192 h).A. rouxii and Endomycopsis fibuliger produced fusel oils totaling 72 mg/liter at 32 h and 558 mg/liter at 192 h. A. rouxii in combination with Candida yeasts produced somewhat more fusel oils, ranging from 590 to 618 mg/liter at 192 h. A. rouxii in combination with Hansenula yeasts produced the least fusel oils, totaling 143 to 248 mg/liter at 192 h. During the first 36 h, production of fusel oils was higher at 30 and 35 degrees C than at 25 degrees C. At 48 h fusel oil production was slightly higher at 30 degrees C than at 35 degrees C. Beyond 48 h, production of fusel oils was higher at 25 degrees C. A. rouxii in combination with Hansenula anomala and Hansenula subpelliculosa produced considerable ethyl acetate, ranging from 145 to 199 mg/liter at 36 h and 354 to 369 mg/liter at 192 h.  相似文献

Progression through the cell cycle is regulated by cyclin-dependent kinases (CDKs). Plants possess a unique class of CDKs, designated B-type CDKs, but seem to lack a functional CDC25 phosphatase, which is a crucial activator of the onset of mitosis in non-plant species. Based on a striking number of functional parallels between the Arabidopsis thaliana CDKB1;1 and the Drosophila melanogaster CDC25 (string), we hypothesize that the acquisition of B-type CDKs and the disappearance of CDC25 in plants might have been associated; in these coupled events, the CDC25-controlled onset of mitosis might have been evolutionarily replaced by a B-type CDK-dominated pathway, eventually resulting in the loss of the CDC25 gene.  相似文献

The Fo membrane domain of FoF1-ATPase complex had been purified from porcine heart mitochondria. SDS-PAGE with silver staining indicated that the purity of Fo was about 85% and the sample contained no subunits of F1-ATPase. The purified Fo was reconstituted into liposomes with different phospholipid composition, and the effect of CL (cardiolipin), PA (phosphatidic acid), PI (phosphatidylinositol) and PS (phosphatidylserine) on the H+ translocation activity of Fo was investigated. The results demonstrated that CL, PA and PI could promote the proton translocation of Fo with the order of CL>PA>>PI, while PS inhibited it. Meanwhile ADM (adriamycin) severely impaired the proton translocation activity of Fo vesicles containing CL, which suggested that CL's stimulation of the activity of reconstituted Fo might correlate with its non-bilayer propensity. Collagen is the most abundant protein in mammals and is widely used as a biomaterial for tissue engineering and drug delivery. We previously reported that dendrimers and linear polymers, modified with collagen model peptides (Pro‐Pro‐Gly)5, form a collagen‐like triple‐helical structure; however, its triple helicity needs improvement. In this study, a collagen‐mimic dendrimer modified with the longer collagen model peptides, (Pro‐Pro‐Gly)10, was synthesized and named PPG10‐den. Circular dichroism analysis shows that the efficiency of the triple helix formation in PPG10‐den was much improved over the original. The X‐ray diffraction analysis suggests that the higher order structure was similar to the collagen triple helix. The thermal stability of the triple helix in PPG10‐den was higher than in the PPG10 peptide itself and our previous collagen‐mimic polymers using (Pro‐Pro‐Gly)5. Interestingly, PPG10‐den also assembled at low temperatures. Self‐assembled structures with spherical and rod‐like shapes were observed by transmission electron microscopy. Furthermore, a hydrogel of PPG10‐den was successfully prepared which exhibited the sol‐gel transition around 45°C. Synopsis In 1967 Daniel Janzen published an influential paper titled "Why Mountain Passes Are Higher in the Tropics." Janzen derived a simple climatic-physiological model predicting that tropical mountain passes would be more effective barriers to organismal dispersal than would temperate-zone passes of equivalent altitude. This prediction derived from a recognition that the annual variation in ambient temperature at any site is relatively low in the tropics. Such low variation within sites not only reduces the seasonal overlap in thermal regimes between low- and high-altitude sites, but should also select for organisms with narrow physiological tolerances to temperature. As a result, Janzen predicted that tropical lowland organisms are more likely to encounter a mountain pass as a physiological barrier to dispersal (hence "higher"), which should in turn favor smaller distributions and an increase in species turnover along altitudinal gradients. This synthetic hypothesis has long been at the center of discussions of latitudinal patterns of physiological adaptation and of species diversity. Here we review some of the key assumptions and predictions of Janzen's hypothesis. We find general support for many assumptions and predictions, but call attention to several issues that somewhat ameliorate the generality of Janzen's classic hypothesis.  相似文献

Is a given instance of rape more likely to result in pregnancy than a given instance of consensual sex? This paper undertakes a review and critique of the literature on rape-pregnancy. Next, it presents our own estimation, from U.S. government data, of pregnancy rates for reproductive age victims of penile-vaginal rape. Using data on birth control usage from the Statistical Abstract of the United States, we then form an estimate of rapepregnancy rates adjusted for the substantial number of women in our sample who would likely have been protected by oral contraception or an IUD. Our analysis suggests that per-incident rape-pregnancy rates exceed per-incident consensual pregnancy rates by a sizable margin, even before adjusting for the use of relevant forms of birth control. Possible explanations for this phenomenon are discussed, as are its implications to ongoing debates over the ultimate causes of rape.  相似文献

Summary Because the genetic code is redundant for most amino acids, different codons can be used in a given position without altering the structure of the protein for which the gene codes. This flexibility permits information encoding structural, and therefore functional, properties of RNA and DNA to be transmitted simultaneously by a protein-coding sequence of DNA. The receptor for D-myo-inositol 1,4,5-trisphosphate (InsP3-R) has been well documented in animal cells. It constitutes an important component of the intracellular calcium signalling system. Today the corresponding genes in many species have been sequenced and the antibodies against some of the InsP3-Rs are available. In contrast, very little is known about its plant counterpart. Only a few published works have dealt directly with this topic. This review summarizes the available relevant data and determines some properties of putative plant receptor(s) including the in silico search for its gene in plant genomes, in vivo evidence, its electrophysiology, the parameters of InsP3-induced calcium release and InsP3 binding, immunological cross-reactivity, and subcellular localization. Future progress in this area seems to be inevitable as, despite the efforts, its gene in plants has not been identified yet.  相似文献

A special class of stochastic processes with optimization (SPO) is considered and their long-run behaviour is investigated. At each step of the process {X h} h 0 (where X h is a discrete random variable) a loss function expressing the distance with respect to the moments in the previous step is minimized. The transformation leading from a certain probability distribution F k (step k) to the next probability distribution F k+1 (step k+1) is accomplished by means of an optimization operator, or simply optimator, that is, a nonlinear operator performing an optimization. The constraints involved by the optimator are typically regarded as a message conveying the information needed for the stepwise evolution of the system. In other words, the behaviour of the system is expressed by an ordered set of events (actions) to be realized with given probabilities and minimum losses, while the message is viewed as a set of constraints providing an inferior bound for that probabilities, hence, ensuring that the required actions are performed. Besides, in order to account for some relaxation phenomena taking place in higher systems each active step (active optimator) is followed by a relaxation step (recovery optimator). Under these conditions it is shown that repeated presentation of a stimulus pattern leads to a convergent process, so that the action is finally performed with minimum minimorum losses. This reveals some fundamental relations between optimization and learning in higher systems, highlighting also the key role of the relaxation processes. Further the behaviour of the system is described in terms of a special class of Non-Markovian processes termed stochastic processes with optimization and relaxation (SPORs). It is shown that two basic subclasses of SPORs exist, namely the monoergodic and the biergodic SPORs. Sufficient conditions for both monoergodicity and biergodicity are given. Finally, a particular feature of the optimators, the so-called nonredundancy is shown to be relevant with respect to the influence of the past on the current evolution of the system.  相似文献

A synopsis of high-rank syntaxa of scree vegetation with an accompanying list of plant communities is presented. The classification of scree vegetation in only one broadly conceived class, theThlaspietea rotundifolii, throughout Europe is a new concept. The vegetation on screes was classified into 8 major groups (17 orders and 42 alliances) according to their altitudinal range and the chemistry of the parent material. Brief information on ecological conditions, phytogeographical patterns, and altitudinal distribution are given. The characteristics and important diagnostic taxa for each alliance and order classified within theThlaspietea rotundifolii are given.  相似文献
