Five primate species were observed in an 83 hectare study site in northern Colombia. They wereAlouatta seniculus, Aotus trivirgatus, Ateles belzebuth hybridus, Cebus albifrons, andSaguinus leucopus. Average group size for the four diurnal species ranged from 5.3 individuals per sighting forCebus to 3.3 forAlouatta andAteles. BecauseCebus utilized regenerating forest, mature stands as well as cultivated sectors, they were able to use 30% more of the study site than the larger cebids. Monkey sightings along transects peaked at 0600–0800 and 1500–1800 and were lowest between 0900–1300 for the four diurnal cebids. The hourly rate of sighting the large cebids was 2–3 times greater for the point method than the transect method, but was less forCebus andSaguinus. However, consistently higher crude density estimates were obtained by the transect method than by the point method. As expected, there was less discrepancy between census methods for the large cebids which regularly utilized the upper canopy. The point method was barely 20% as effective as the transect method for estimating crude densities ofCebus andSaguinus. Factors influencing the effectiveness of the two census techniques as monkey detection and visibility, climatic conditions, and length of study are discussed. Recommendations for improving censusing effectiveness are listed.  相似文献

As natural forest cover declines, planted forests have come to occupy an increasing percentage of the earth's surface, yet we know little about their suitability as alternative habitat for wildlife. Although some primate species use planted forests, few studies have compared primate populations in natural and nearby planted forests. From March 2006 to July 2010, we conducted line transect surveys and assessed group sizes and compositions in natural and nearby 60-70 year old mixed indigenous planted forest to determine the densities of diurnal primate species (Colobus guereza, Cercopithecus mitis, C. ascanius) in these two forest types at Isecheno, Kakamega Forest, Kenya. Line transect data were analyzed using the Encounter Rate, Whitesides, and Distance sampling methods, which all provided broadly consistent results. We found that all three diurnal primate species occupy both natural and planted forest at Isecheno. However, group densities of the two Cercopithecus species were 42-46% lower in planted than in natural forest. Colobus guereza achieved comparable group densities in the two forest types, although the species is found in smaller groups, and thus at lower (35%) individual density, in planted than in natural forest. Following a logging episode in the planted forest mid-way through our study, Cercopithecus ascanius group densities fell by 60% while C. mitis and Colobus guereza group densities remained stable over the next two years. Overall, our results suggest that while primate species vary in their response to habitat disturbance, planted forest has the potential to contribute to the conservation of some African monkey species. Even for the relatively flexible taxa in our study, however, 60-70 year old mixed indigenous planted forest failed to support densities comparable to those in nearby natural forest. From the perspective of Kakamega's primates, planted forests may supplement natural forest, but are not an adequate replacement for it.  相似文献

We studied the status and distribution of the diurnal primates in the Phong Nha – Ke Bang National Park (PNKB NP) from April to August 2007. In the past, researchers reported 9 primate species and subspecies for the karst forests of PNKB NP, which constitutes the most important protected area for the endangered Hatinh langur (Trachypithecus hatinhensis) in Vietnam. All 9 primate taxa are threatened due to hunting pressure and habitat loss. We applied line transect sampling in 4 areas. During a total of 117 transect inspections along 12 different transect routes, we confirmed 5 primate taxa and the analysis of population densities resulted in 2143 (±467) Hatinh langurs, 1316 (±871) red-shanked douc langurs (Pygathrix nemaeus), 930 (±489) stump-tailed macaques (Macaca arctoides), 986 (±883) eastern Assamese macaques (M. a. assamensis), and 18 (±18) southern white-cheeked crested gibbons (Nomascus siki) in the whole PNKB NP, which covers an area of ca. 85,000 ha. We could not detect the 2 nocturnal lorises, Bengal slow lorises (Nycticebus bengalensis) and pygmy slow lorises (N. pygmaeus), as well as rhesus macaques (Macaca mulatta) and northern pig-tail macaques (M. leonina). The distribution of the primates predominantly depended on human impact. We could not recognize a correlation between habitat constitution and abundance of primates. The population density estimates showed a much higher density of the Hatinh langur than previously assumed. Thus the importance of the PNKB NP for the conservation of this endangered langur increased significantly.  相似文献

A 17-month study was made of the primates using a 9-ha “island” of forest, surrounded by savanna, in the northern part of the Lopé Reserve, Gabon. One group ofCercopithecus cephus (plus a young maleCercopithecus nictitans who was in permanent association with them) were resident in the fragment and groups of five other species of primates made visits during 127 days of observation:Pan troglodytes, 15 visits;Cercocebus albigena, 10;Colobus satanas, 3;Cercopithecus nictitans, 2;C. pogonias, 1. Visits were also made by lone males of three species,C. nictitans, Cercocebus albigena, andMandrillus sphinx. The eighth species of diurnal primate present at Lopé,Gorilla g. gorilla, did not visit the fragment during the study. Compared to conspecific groups in neighbouring continuous forest, primates in the fragment ate less fruit, seeds and flowers and more insects and leaves. The local population density of primates resident in the fragment was equivalent to that of the neighbouring continuous forest where all eight species occur, despite the diversity and abundance of fruit being less in the fragment. The costs imposed on the resident group by the reduced diversity and availability of preferred fruit foods appeared to be offset by a number of benefits that increased individual feeding efficiency for monkeys residing within a single fragment. These included lower travel costs, reduced feeding competition between individuals through group fission, and excellent knowledge of the location and quality of food resources in the small home range. It is also possible that the overall negative impact of inter-specific feeding competition was lower in fragments than in continuous forest and that micro-habitat differences resulted in an increased availability of palatable insect and leaf fallback foods in the fragment.  相似文献

Many individual researchers have used line transect counts to estimate forest primate abundance. They have devoted less attention to the interpretation of line transect data obtained by several observers, as is often the case in long-term monitoring programs. We present primate relative abundance data that 5 observers collected over 6 yr (not continuous) along 4 different transects each 4 km long in the Mwanihana Forest, Udzungwa Mountains National Park, Tanzania. Total distance walked during transect repetitions is ca. 700 km. The species we saw most frequently was the endemic Udzungwa red colobus Procolobus gordonorum (mean 0.59 groups/km walked), followed by the Angolan black-and-white colobus Colobus angolensis (0.43 groups/km) and Sykes’s monkey Cercopithecus mitis (0.35 groups/km). We sighted the endemic Sanje mangabey Cercocebus galeritus sanjei and the yellow baboon Papio cynocephalus infrequently, the latter being confined to the deciduous forest parts of the transects. We analyzed sighting frequency by gross habitat type, transect, season, and observer. Interobserver differences in the relative abundance of each species were moderate and the few cases of significant variations were due to discordance of only 1 observer from the others. Estimated distances of primate group sightings differ significantly among observers, thus preventing us from deriving estimates of absolute density. Frequency distributions of distance-class intervals are not significantly different among observers, which may indicate gross interobserver consistency in the width of the area sampled. We conclude that unless consistency in data collection is checked, as we did for 2 observers who collected data simultaneously, potential interobserver differences remain an underlying source of variance in the results that cannot be separated from other sources of variance.  相似文献

The Guiana Shield has large pristine tracts of tropical forest with high biological diversity and is an area of endemism within the Amazon Basin. However, the conservation status of primates in eastern Amazonian Brazil is still poorly known. Here, we report information on relative abundance, group size, density estimates, plus the effects of environmental variables and seasonality of primates in a sustainable-use reserve in the eastern Brazilian Amazon. From a 603 km transect-based census conducted in October–December 2013 and March–June 2014 we obtained 122 sighting records of six primate species. The most common were Ateles paniscus (45 detections) and Saguinus midas (40 detections). The high calculated density estimates for Sg. midas (2.01 groups/km2 or 12.05 individuals/km2) and for At. paniscus (3.44 groups/km2 or 10.31 individuals/km2) underscore the conservation importance of the study area for the vulnerable At. paniscus. We found no effect of environmental variables on the number of detections of primates, except for At. paniscus and Cebus olivaceus, with the former showing a higher number of detections in more open canopy forest during the rainy season, and the later having a higher number of detections in areas with higher density of palms in the dry season.  相似文献

The community structure and polyspecific associations found in five sympatric resident primates (Cercopithecus nictitans, C. cephus, C. pogonias, Cercocebus torquatus, andC. albigena) and a temporary visitor (Mandrillus sphinx) were studied within the Campo Animal Reserve, a tropical rain forest in southwestern Cameroon. Several ecological variables of the six species, e.g. the number of foraging groups in the study area, group size, home range size, biomass density, and individual density, were estimated by undertaking a systematic census and by other means, e.g. tracing.C. nictitans was the most abundant species in terms of its foraging groups, biomass, and individual densities. The foraging biomass varied significantly among the six species. The five resident species frequently formed polyspecific groups.M. sphinx also associated with them when it visited the area. The food items fed on by the five resident species were also checked. An index for synecological analysis revealed that the five species shared similar food niches. The five species also utilized similar foraging areas and strata, possibly depending on the availabilities of common foods. The above results cannot be explained by conventional equilibrium-competition models. For understanding the polyspecific associations, it is proposed that the primates form polyspecific foraging groups in order to optimize their foraging biomass. This idea leads to a model that can also explain certain of the grouping behaviors, such as group fission-fusion, found in large body size primates.  相似文献

Fish ecologists need to do pilot studies to develop accurate, precise and efficient sampling strategies. This paper presents a case study of the pilot investigations carried out to achieve this for three species of butterflyfish Chaetodon rainfordi, C. plebeius and Chelmon rostratus, at One Tree Reef. The effects of different transect sizes and methods on density estimates and their precision for each species were assessed. Varying transect dimensions (25, 50, 75 and 100 m lengthx1,2 and 3 m width) did not significantly affect the density estimates. However for C. rainfordi the precision of estimates was variable with the smallest transect length and width producing the least precise results. Higher density estimates were obtained for juvenile fish over a 1 m strip width than a 2 m width. A significant effect of disturbance on the densities of C. rainfordi and Chelmon rostratus was caused by the laying out of the transect tape. Consequently a technique of simultaneously censusing and delimiting transect boundaries was tested and found to give consistently higher density estimates. The potential effect of censusing at different times of the tide was examined and found to be insignificant for two species but quite complex for the other. Finally, a pilot sampling program was done at seven localities across One Tree Reef to determine the most efficient way of allocating sampling effort, for future census work.  相似文献

We have evaluated techniques of estimating animal density through direct counts using line transects during 1988–92 in the tropical deciduous forests of Mudumalui Sanctuary in southern India for four species of large herbivorous mammals, namely, chital (Axis axis). sambar (Cervus unicolor). Asian elephant (Elephas maximus) and gaur (Bos gaurus) Density estimates derived from the Fourier Series and the Half-Normal models consistently had the lowest coefficient of variation. These two models also generated similar mean density estimates. For the Fourier Series estimator, appropriate cut-off widths for analyzing line transect data for the four species are suggested. Grouping data into various distance classes did not produce any appreciable differences in estimates of mean density or their variances, although model fit is generally better when data arc placed in fewer groups. The sampling effort needed to achieve a desired precision (coefficient of variation) in the density estimate is derived. A sampling effort of 800 km of transects returned a 10% coefficient of variation on estimate for ehital; for the other species a higher effort was needed to achieve this level of precision. There was no statistically significant relationship between detectability of a group and the size of the group for any species. Density estimates along roads were generally significantly different from those in the interior of the forest, indicating that road-side counts many not be appropriate for most species.  相似文献

We performed a line transect survey (352.4 km) of primates in the Serra de Paranapiacaba, at one of the largest relatively undisturbed fragments of the Atlantic rainforest of Southeastern Brazil (ca. 1400 km2), in August 1998. The brown capuchin, Cebus apella nigritus, was the most common species found in the area (20 groups, density estimate: 5.31 ± 2.05 individuals per km2, mean ± SE). Nine groups of the brown howler monkey, Alouatta guariba clamitans, and eight of the woolly spider monkey, Brachyteles arachnoides arachnoides, were also recorded, with preliminary density estimates of 0.79 ± 0.40 and 2.33 ± 1.37 individuals per km2, respectively. Density estimates for these species in other fragments of Atlantic rainforest are reviewed, showing that densities in Paranapiacaba are among the lowest reported. It is suggested that the higher densities reported for isolated populations in small forest patches (<50 km2) is related to the absence of main primate predators, the density compensation phenomenon and the ecological plasticity of some primate species. In contrast, local extinction in many small patches is probably related to hunting pressure. Given the important primate populations found in the Paranapiacaba fragment, conservation strategies for the studied species should give priority to effective protection of the largest remnant fragments from illegal hunting and deforestation, rather than translocation of individuals or captive breeding programs to introduce monkeys in small forest fragments vulnerable to hunting and of uncertain future.  相似文献

The line transect method is one of the main methods used to estimate primate densities. Several protocols have been proposed to analyze the data recorded under this method but none of them have been widely accepted since there is a considerable controversy about their respective accuracy. In this study, densities of the black colobus monkeyColobus satanas calculated using eight different protocols were compared with the actual density given by the home range method. Rates of polyspecific associations were also compared. The two most accurate estimates of group density (under- or overestimation <10%) were yielded by the protocol that used the maximum transect-to-animal distance and by that of using a fixed distance of 100 m. These protocols, however, underestimated individual density because counts performed from transects underestimated by 23% the average group size. The six other protocols overestimated group density by 20–195%. Factors that could explain these overestimation were discussed. Because histogram of sighting frequency showed several classes of distances with no records and because groups have been detected as far as 160 m, we suggested that the uneven topography of the study site increased the variability of the sighting distances. Combined with a relatively low number of sightings (n=23), this did not allow to identify a sharp detection distance. Rates of polyspecific association found with the two methods were similar. We recommend to investigate the influence of the topography for bias in density estimates when using the line transect method.  相似文献

Allozymic variation at 30 isozyme loci was examined electrophoretically in nine annual and one perennial species ofCicer. While most of the accessions examined were monomorphic, species can be differentiated on the basis of their enzyme phenotypes. Several groups of species were identified based upon genetic distance values. For example,C. arietinum, C. reticulatum, andC. echinospermum shared the same alleles for most of the loci exmained. PerennialC. anatolicum is also closely related to this group. Similarly,C. judaicum, C. bijugum, andC. pinnatifidum formed another group. Two annual species,C. chorassanicum andC. yamashitae clustered together, whereasC. cuneatum was the most distantly related species. Correlations were found between genetic distances and geographic distribution. Results from enzyme electrophoresis tend to support the previously reported taxonomic treatments based upon crossability and morphological similarity. However,C. yamashitae, which has been classified in the second crossability group, is quite distinct genetically and morphologically from the remaining species of the group. An isozyme gene duplication observed in the genus suggested the monophyletic origin of the species examined in the present study.  相似文献

A sonar transect method has been found to be a useful alternative to traditional tape-transect methods in quantification of the species richness and abundance of reef fish. No significant difference was found between species richness measured by the methods, and high Jaccard’s similarity coefficients were calculated for each site using the two methods, indicating a similar response to fish of both the sonar and tape transects. Abundance estimates of one species only (Chaetodon tricinctus) were greater when the transect tape method was used, probably because fish were being attracted to the divers who deployed the transect tape. Substantial time saving was also noted for the sonar transects, indicating overall that estimating distance using sonar rather than transect tape may enable increased efficiency and accuracy in␣underwater visual surveys for both ecological␣and management-related research on reef fishes.  相似文献

This study aims to ascertain habitat utilization, in relation to forest structural variation, by a multi-species group of primates in tropical lowland rainforest in Southeast Peru during dry season. A new approach to assessing habitat utilization was used. Habitat variation was described by structural and indicator variables collected in quadrats along transects through a study area within Terra Firme and Floodplain forest. Variables were grouped into ‘factors’ accounting for most of the variation by means of a Principal Components Analysis (PCA). Presence or absence of the primates within the quadrats, assessed by repeat transect surveys, was taken to indicate habitat preferences. Discrimination between the habitat and forest structure in areas of primate presence as opposed to absence was carried out by means of Discriminant Function Analysis (DFA). This highlighted patterns in most utilized habitat. Vertical utilization of the forest was also assessed along with presence in bamboo and general activity on encounter. Suggestions of habitat preference and utilization are made for each of the six sympatric species studied, based on significantly discriminating habitat factors, vertical stratification on encounter and relationships with bamboo.Saguinus fuscicollis andCebus moloch appeared as habitat generalists.Cebus apella, Saimiri sciureus, andAotus spp., exhibited varying degrees of preference for habitat factors suggesting disturbed forest,Cebus albifrons was more generalistic but with a possible association with primary, naturally disturbed forest.C. appella was encountered in Terra Firme forest significantly more than in Floodplain. ForS. sciureus, C. moloch, andC. apella, upper understory was the most utilized forest layer, forC. albifrons, middle canopy and forS. sciureus andAotus spp., lower understory. Both positive and negative relationships with bamboo were highlighted. Significant positive relationships betweenAotus spp., and bamboo suggest dense bamboo stands provide important daytime resting sites for this nocturnal species.C. moloch was also shown to utilize bamboo whereasS. fuscicollis appeared to actively avoid it. High levels of conformity with past studies in terms of habitat utilization patterns described for the species studied supports the conclusion that the methods used in this study provide an effective means of assessing primate habitat utilization within complex habitat.  相似文献

For the first time, three cases of capture and forced interaction were observed between bonobos (Pan paniscus)and two other species of primates (Colobus angolensisand Cercopithecus ascanius)in the Lilungu (Ikela) region, Republic of Zaire. The bonobos interacted with the captured primates as if they were dealing with individuals of their own species. They sought cooperation in their interactions with the captured young primates without scccess. There is no evidence that they ate the captives.  相似文献

Variability and genetic divergence of 11 field populations of seven species of theCampanula elatines andC. fragilis rock-plants group from the Mediterranean and pre-Alpine areas have been studied by starch-gel electrophoretic techniques.Campanula isophylla, C. elatines, C. elatinoides, C. fragilis subsp.fragilis and subs.cavolinii, C. garganica were collected in Italy, whilstC. fenestrellata subsp.istriaca andC. portenschlagiana came from W. Jugoslavia. Twelve enzymatic loci for each population were genetically analysed: PGI-1 and 2, PGM-2, IDH-1 and -2, SKDH, ME, ADH, GOT-2, MPI-1 and -2, SOD-1. The genetic distances among the above mentioned entities have been calculated by Nei's index and depicted in a dendrogram.  相似文献

AFLP markers were used to assess genetic relationships among Cicer species with distribution in Turkey. Genetic distances were computed among 47 Cicer accessions representing four perennial and six annual species including chickpea, using 306 positions on AFLP gels. AFLP-based grouping of species revealed two clusters, one of which includes three perennial species, Cicer montbretii, Cicer isauricum and Cicer anatolicum, while the other cluster consists of two subclusters, one including one perennial, Cicer incisum, along with three annuals from the second crossability group (Cicer pinnatifidum, Cicer judaicum and Cicer bijugum) and the other one comprising three annuals from the first crossability group (Cicer echinospermum, Cicer reticulatum and Cicer arietinum). Consistent with previous relationship studies in the same accession set using allozyme and RAPD markers, in AFLP-based relationships, C. incisum was the closest perennial to nearly all annuals, and C. reticulatum was the closest wild species to C. arietinum. Cluster analysis revealed the grouping of all accessions into their distinct species-clusters except for C. reticulatum accessions, ILWC247, ILWC242 and TR54961; the former was found to be closer to the C. arietinum accessions while the latter two clustered with the C. echinospermum group. Small genetic distance values were detected among C. reticulatum accessions (0.282) and between C. reticulatum and C. arietinum (0.301) indicating a close genetic similarity between these two species. Overall, the AFLP-based genetic relationships among accessions and species were congruous with our previous study of genetic relationships using allozymes. The computed level of AFLP variation and its distribution into within and between Cicer species paralleled the previous report based on RAPD analyses. AFLP analysis also confirmed the presence of the closest wild relatives and previous projections of the origin of chickpea in southern Turkey. Results presented in this report indicate that AFLP analysis is an efficient and reliable marker technology in determination of genetic variation and relationships in the genus Cicer. Obviously, the use of AFLP fingerprinting in constructing a detailed genetic map of chickpea and cloning, and characterizing economically important traits would be promising as well.Communicated by P. A modified bootstrapping procedure is described by means of which standard errors and confidence limits may be determined for the Penrose shape coefficient. This method is then applied to odontometric data derived from four closely related groups of primates: Cercopithecus aethiops pygerythrus, C. a. sabaeus,St. Kitt’s green monkey (derived from C. a. sabaeus),and C. a. centralis.Although statistically significant distances were found to exist between these groups, one shape coefficient was significantly greater than the others: that between C. a. pygerythrusand C. a. centralis.Low levels of sexual dimorphism characterized the shape coefficients, with distances based on mandibular teeth being greater than those derived from maxillary teeth.  相似文献

We examined the effects of arbuscular mycorrhizas (AM), phosphorus fertilization, intraspecific density, and their interaction, on the growth, phosphorus uptake, and root morphology of three facultative mycotrophic crops (Capsicum annuum, Zea mays, and Cucurbita pepo). Plants were grown in pots with or without AM at three densities and four phosphorus availabilities for 10 weeks. AM colonization, plant weight, and shoot phosphorus concentration were measured at harvest. Root morphology was assessed for C. annuum and Z. mays. Phosphorus fertilization reduced but did not eliminate AM colonization of all species. AM, phosphorus, and density interacted significantly to modify growth of C. annuum and C. pepo such that increased density and phosphorus diminished beneficial effects of AM. Increased density reduced positive effects of AM on C. annuum and C. pepo shoot phosphorus concentrations. AM altered both Z. mays and C. annuum root morphology in ways that complemented potential phosphorus uptake by mycorrhizas, but increased density and phosphorus diminished these effects. We infer that increased density predominantly influenced plant responses by affecting whether or not carbon (photosynthate) or phosphorus limited plant growth. By exacerbating carbon limitation, high density reduced the benefit/cost ratio of mycorrhizas and minimized their effects.  相似文献

A group of Callicebus torquatus lugens using a territory of 22.25 ha in eastern Colombia showed a varied diet throughout the annual period of lowest fruit availability. This is a time when the females are usually pregnant. During a 6-month period the study group's diet consisted of 59.4% fruits, 26.9% immature seeds, 6.4% leaves, 3.9% flowers, and 3.4% insects and spiders. At the fruit bottleneck, consumption of seeds and flowers increased, while consumption of leaves and insects showed no particular trend. They ate 62 species of plants: 45 for flesh, 6 for seeds, 2 for flowers, and 13 for foliage. The most important families in terms of species chosen are Moraceae (8 species, or 11 species if Cecropiaceae is included), Myristicaceae (7), Arecaceae (4), Chrysobalanaceae (4), and Euphorbiaceae. The most important families in terms of feeding time are Myristicaceae (25%), Euphorbiaceae (15%), Moraceae (14%), and Arecaceae (9%). Of 440 marked feeding trees in the territory of the group, 41.1% are represented by Sandwithia heterocalyx (Euphorbiaceae). This species is the most important food in the diet and has the highest density of all food trees in the home range. It followed by Heterostemon conjugates (Caesalpiniaceae) (10%), Iryanthera ulei (Myristicaceae) (6.1%), Anaxagorea brachycarpa (Annonaceae) (5.9%), and Iryanthera crassifolia (Myristicaceae) (3.4%). The remaining 33.5% of the marked trees are represented by the other 57 species. In terms of time spent feeding, the important trees in the diet include Sandwithia heterocalyx (13.9%), Virola melinonii (10%), Iryanthera ulei (8.35%), Oenocarpus bataua (7.06%), and Heterostemon conjugates (6.53%). We suggest that Callicebus torquatus should be described as a frugivore–granivore; they share with the Pitheciin an immature seed-eating adaptation.  相似文献
