  • 1 We investigated the relationship between geographical distribution and ecological tolerance within the ancient asexual family Darwinulidae. Distribution maps were compiled based on data from the literature, the Non‐marine Ostracod Distribution in Europe database and personal collections. Ecological tolerance was assessed experimentally by exposing individual ostracods to a combination of eight different salinities (range from 0 to 30 g L?1) and three different temperatures (10, 20 and 30 °C).
  • 2 The type species of the family, Darwinula stevensoni, is ubiquitous and cosmopolitan; the two species Penthesilenula brasiliensis and Microdarwinula zimmeri also have an intercontinental distribution. Two other darwinulid species tested here (Vestalenula molopoensis and P. aotearoa) are known only from their type localities. The latter is also true for most extant darwinulids.
  • 3 Darwinula stevensoni and P. brasiliensis had a broad salinity tolerance, tolerating distilled water and also salinity up to 25–30 g L?1, whereas the maximum salinity tolerance of V. molopoensis was 12 g L?1 and of P. aotearoa, 20 g L?1.
  • 4 The results indicate that both ecological specialists and generalists, as well as intermediate forms, exist in the Darwinulidae and that taxa with the broadest ecological tolerance also have the widest distribution.

Distribution patterns and genetic diversity of Caloglossa species have been studied in various regions but are still poorly understood around the tropical western Pacific where many marine organisms show high species richness. We explored the diversity of Caloglossa species in New Ireland, Papua New Guinea using morphological and genetic analyses. Seven species of Caloglossa (C. adhaerens, C. leprieurii, C. ogasawaraensis, C. bengalensis, C. postiae, C. saigonensis and C. vieillardii) were collected from eight sites; the latter four species are new records in Papua New Guinea. All specimens collected were cultured to compare their morphology under the same culture condition. Reproductive structures of gametophytes and/or sporophytes were described for the first time in some species from these collections. In C. leprieurii, gall‐like structure appeared in most gametophyte strains but not in tetrasporophytes. Such galls were produced from wing cells, and spermatangia and/or procarps were formed on many galls. The LSU rDNA and rbcL analyses revealed high intraspecific diversity in many species although the number of samples was limited and the sampling sites were within 200 km. We revealed high species richness and intraspecific genetic variation in Papua New Guinea, suggesting a hot spot for the diversity of Caloglossa.  相似文献

Studies on the morphology, reproductive compatibility, life cycle and molecular phylogeny of the euryhaline red alga Caloglossa provide insights into the speciation events and biogeographic patterns. The C. leprieurii complex is separated into three morphotypes based on the number of cell rows at nodes and the blade width. The three morphotypes are reproductively incompatible with each other, and furthermore many mating groups are recognized within the morphotypes. Incomplete reproductive isolation is occasionally seen between geographically distant mating groups, whereas no sexual compatibility occurs between sympatrically or parapatrically distributed mating groups. In the molecular phylogenetic analyses, the C. leprieurii complex is resolved as two clusters that phenotypically correspond to the single and multiple cell row types, respectively. The strains belonging to the same mating group are closely related to each other, without exception, while the mating groups showing incomplete reproductive reactions do not always make a clade. The genetic distance is generally not correlative to the geographic distance, and this is also suggested by the morphological data and crossability. These results indicate that allopatric speciation has frequently occurred in this species complex, although there is some evidence of long-distance dispersal.M. Caloglossa released tetraspores only during dark periods in contrast to a marked light-period release exhibited by Murrayella. Both could be readily converted to a reversed light-dark cycle after a lag period of 1 day. Maximum tetraspore discharge by Caloglossa occurred approximately 4–5 h after the onset of darkness and by Murrayella 4–5 h after the onset of light. Neither 8- nor 16–h light periods affected spore release patterns in Caloglossa, while in Murrayella the spore release pattern was briefly disrupted by short day lengths, but recovered after several days. In both genera, the rhythmicity was disrupted in periods of continual darkness or continual light and appeared to be independent of light quality; however, minimum irradiance levels were critical to maintenance of release patterns. Possible mechanisms of tetraspore discharge periodicity are discussed but since both plants typically have a limited habitat as epiphytes on mangrove trunks and pneumatophores, any speculations as to the adaptive advantages of each pattern tend toward mutual contradiction.  相似文献

Using flow cytometry and amplified fragment length polymorphism (AFLP), we explored the cytogeography and phylogeography of Hieracium intybaceum, a silicicolous species distributed in the Alps and spatially isolated in the Vosges Mountains and the Schwarzwald Mountains. We detected two ploidies, diploid and tetraploid, but no triploid or mixed‐ploidy populations. Whereas diploids are sexual and distributed all across the Alps, tetraploids are apomictic and seem to be confined to the western Alps and the Vosges. We detected a low level of genetic variation. Bayesian clustering identified four clusters/genetic groups, which are partly congruent with the ploidal pattern. The first two groups consisting exclusively of diploids dominate the whole distribution range in the Alps and show east–west geographical separation with a diffuse borderline running from eastern Switzerland to the eastern part of North Tyrol. The third genetic group lacks a defined geographical range and includes diploid and tetraploid plants. The last genetic group comprises tetraploid plants in the French Alps and the Vosges. We suppose that diploids colonized the deglaciated areas from source populations most likely located mainly in the southern part of the recent distribution range and occasionally also in the western Alps. Gene flow and further differentiation likely took place. Apomictic tetraploids most likely originated in the western Alps or in the refugium at the south‐western foot of the Alps. Purification of mannitol-l-phosphatase, an enzyme catalyzing the final step of mannitol biosynthesis, was first achieved in the mannitol-accumulating red alga Caloglossa continua (Okamura) King et Puttock. The enzyme was shown to be a monomer, since gel filtration and sodium dodecyl sulfate–polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis gave close values of apparent molecular weights of 28,500 and 30,200, respectively. The protein exhibited an isoelectric point of 4.8. The substrate specificity for mannitol-l-phosphate (MIP) was very high, and that for K m(MIP) was 0.41 mM. The catalytic activity was optimal at pH 7.4. The enzyme was activated by Mg2+, but was strongly inhibited by Ca2+, NaF, N-ethylmaleimide, and p-hydroxymercuribenzoic acid. Seawater levels of NaCl and physiological levels of mannitol also inhibited the activity by 50% or more. Changes in the concentrations of those ions and metabolites may regulate the biosynthesis of mannitol as an osmoregulant in vivo. Received May 7, 2001; accepted June 15, 2001.  相似文献

The Stylonematophyceae is an early diverging red algal class that contains organisms in which sexual reproduction has not been reported. Previous studies have hypothesized a single copy of the actin gene in this class. Amplification of the actin gene in members of the Stylonematophyceae, including several isolates of Stylonema alsidii, reveals a more complex evolutionary history. The data support independent gene duplications in Goniotrichopsis reniformis and Stylonema alsidii. Three of the seven isolates of S. alsidii had three copies of actin. Analyses indicate that all copies are functional and not pseudogenes. Due to our lack of knowledge of the ploidy level in Stylonema and the asexual nature of these organisms, an ancient change in ploidy level, producing diploid or even triploid organisms, cannot be ruled out to explain two copies of actin within these organisms. Within Stylonema alsidii two of the actin copies (Groups 1 and 2) show similar levels of variation; p‐distances and the number of synonymous and non‐synonymous sites are roughly the same. Yet the changes are distributed differently. One group showed little shared variation among the samples, mutations therefore represent autoapomorphies, while variation in the other group is usually shared among samples (parsimony‐informative). Variation in the other group is usually shared among samples (parsimony‐informative). A third group of actin genes also observed in S. alsidii are highly divergent from the other two copies, yet they maintain all of the signatures of functional proteins. Our data reveal a complex evolutionary history of the actin gene in these species and highlight the lack of knowledge into the basic biology (ploidy level, life cycle characteristics) of this class.  相似文献

The ultrastructure of post-fertilization development in Nienburgia andersoniana (J. Ag.) Kyl. is described. Above the auxiliary cell there is a group of four sterile cells. The presence of abundant storage products (starch granules, lipid bodies and protein crystals) in these cells indicates that the sterile cells function as nutrient suppliers to the young auxiliary and gonimoblast cells of the carposporophyte during its early steps of development. Following fertilization and transfer of the diploid nucleus to the auxiliary cell, the trichogyne disappears and large multinucleate gonimoblast initials are produced. These subsequently produce generative gonimoblast cells which cleave successively to form young carpospores. Those of the gonimoblast cells which will not differentiate into carpospores are transformed into cells producing mucilage. Both kinds of gonimoblast cells contain plastids, starch granules, cytoplasmic concentric membrane bodies and small vesicles. Dark-staining spherical masses occurring in the cytoplasm of the auxiliary and gonimoblast cells may represent degenerating haploid nuclei. Septal plugs interconnecting the auxiliary cell and gonimoblast cells increase considerably in size during carposporophyte development. The fusion cell at the late stage of carposporophyte development appears degenerative. Young carpospores have plastids and mitochondria, and concentric membrane bodies that will form mucilage sacs. Medium-aged carpospores have fully developed plastids, starch granules and fibrous vacuoles. Mature carpospores possess, in addition, cored vesicles. Although epiphytism is generally heaviest on older portions of the host thallus and both variation and abundance of epiphytes decrease with proximity to meristematic apices, Neosiphonia harveyi (Bailey) Kim, Choi, Guiry and Saunders was frequently found on upper parts of sargassacean hosts. This study compared density, thallus length and fertility of epiphytic N. harveyi among different regions of Sargassum patens C. Agardh thalli to reveal a unique distribution pattern of this epiphyte. The majority of epiphytic N. harveyi was observed on the upper part of host thalli and was seldom seen near the basal part. Over a 3‐month period, mean epiphyte density was greater on host apices while thallus length and fertility were greater on subapical portions of host thalli, suggesting the colonization by this epiphyte near the apical part of the host. Distribution patterns of this epiphyte were similar among S. patens growing at different depths. Apical portions of S. patens appear to be more suitable substrata for N. harveyi settlement and colonization compared with other portions of the host thallus, regardless of depth.  相似文献

The distribution of 18 species of Calanoida Copepoda found in the estuaries of the Brazilian coast is analyzed. A slight tendency of a latitudinal decrease in diversity, from North to South is found. Salinity ranges from the different species are discussed and in some cases interspecific vicariance patterns are found. Reproduction and life history patterns in culture of five Caloglossa speaes from Australia and New Zealand are compared. Caloglossa adhaerens King et Puttock and Caloglossa bengalensis (Martens) King et Puttock have a Polyslphonla‐type sexual life history (P‐type, isomorphic alternation of generations). Caloglossa monosticha Kamiya occurs only in Western Australia (WA) and is a P‐type. Caloglossa ogasawaraensis Okamura occurs in WA, Northern Territory (NT), Queensland (QLD), New South Wales (NSW), Victoria (VIC) and South Australia (SA) and is for the most part a P‐type in culture. A few isolates have bisexual gametophytes that are self‐compatible, while most are unisexual. Caloglossa ogasawaraensis from Adelaide, SA and from Wilsons Promontory, VIC are new records for these States. In Australia, Caloglossa postiae (King et Puttock) Kamiya et King occurs in NSW, NT and QLD. All nine isolates are P‐type. Isolates of Caloglossa leprieurii (Montagne) G. Martens from NSW, NT, QLD, Tasmania, VIC and New Zealand are P‐type except for the freshwater isolates in which tetraspore germlings do not reproduce. In some isolates mixed‐phase reproduction is seen with male gametophytes producing both viable spermatia and tetrasporangia and female gametophytes producing procarps and sori with non‐dividing sporangia. All isolates of C. leprieurii irom Spencer Gulf and Gulf of St Vincent, SA and one isolate from QLD give rise to successive asexual generations of tetrasporophytes. Based on RuBisCO spacer DNA data an asexual life history has arisen several times in the C. leprieurii complex. The literature on apomixis, mixed‐phase reproduction, bisexuality and sexual compatibility in red algae is surveyed.  相似文献

Bostrychia moritziana (Sonder ex Kützing) J. Agardh is recorded from many regions around the world. Our laboratory culture investigations have verified a sexual life cycle in isolates from Australia, Venezuela, Colombia, South Africa, Fiji, New Zealand and Indonesia. By contrast, asexual isolates producing successive generations of tetrasporophytes in laboratory culture and, presumably, in the field, are known from Australia. New Caledonia and Japan. In Australia, asexual reproduction is absent only in Victoria. In Western Australia, Northern Territory and Queensland, 99% of the isolates have asexual reproduction. In New South Wales (NSW), asexual and sexual populations are often intermixed. Of the 176 worldwide field collections, 58% were vegetative, 39% were tetrasporic, 2% were female and 1% were male. After several years of observations on the asexual isolates in culture, at least 30 successive asexual tetrasporophytic generations have developed. Only two asexual isolates (3558 and 3575) from NSW have formed a single male and female gametophyte in culture. In a self-cross of 3568, the carpospores developed into tetrasporophytes that recycled asexually. All outcrosses done with normal sexual isolates produced normal carposporophytes and the carpospores developed into tetrasporophytes that also recycled asexually. Asexual populations may arise repeatedly by loss of meiosis in tetrasporangia of sexual populations. Asexual reproduction apparently does not diminish the overall dispersal and abundance in the field. Our present bio-geographic data show that sexually reproducing popuiations of B. moritziana occur worldwide, while asexuaily reproducing populations are confined to the western Pacific. Bostrychia bispora West et Zuccarello, initially described on the basis of its asexual reproduction to distinguish it from B, moritziana, is now reduced to synonymy with B. moritziana.  相似文献

A new species, Erythroglossum latum, is described based on specimens from Fukushima Prefecture along the east coast of Honshu, Japan. The ultrastructure sequence for the complete post-fertilization development is described in Cryptopleura ruprechtiana (C. Agardh) Kylin, a member of the Delesseriaceae. Following fertilization the diploid nucleus is transferred to the auxiliary cell. This contains typical red algal proplastids, cytoplasmic concentric membranes, numerous small vacuoles and lipid bodies. Crystalline inclusions and virus-like particles are also present. In addition darkly staining spherical masses possibly represent dehydrated haploid chromatin. The multinucleate auxiliary cell produces initially one large gonimoblast initial and subsequently many smaller gonimoblast initials. The first formed generative gonimoblast cell is similar in cellular structure to the auxiliary cell. Gonimoblast initials are uninucleate but through caryokinesis they become multinucleate. They undergo repeated cleavage to form more gonimoblast cells. Subsequent, centripetal cytokinesis results in the formation of clusters of gonimoblast cells. A new type structural cap or association is observed in the septal plugs that interconnect gonimoblast initials. Terminal or generative gonimoblast cells cleave to form additional gonimoblast cells. Only terminal gonimoblast cells are differentiated to carpospores.  相似文献

Womersleya monanthos (J. Agardh) Papenfuss is typically an epiphyte of larger brown and red algae that are common in drift along the southeastern coasts of Australia. A hitherto little-known member of the Phycodrys group of the Nitophylloideae, its reproductive features have been studied in detail and its taxonomic position clarified. Blades are polystromatic throughout and lack veins or nerves, with blades originating from apical cells of primary and second-order cell rows. Intercalary cell divisions take place in primary cell rows and all other branch orders, with third-order laterals arising both abaxially and adaxially on cells of second-order rows. Fertile central cells bear procarps on pericentral cells on both sides of the blade, the procarps consisting of two 4-celled carpogonial branches and a single central group of sterile cells that enlarge and persist at the distal end of a bicampanulate fusion cell at maturity. Spermatangia and tetrasporangia form in circular subapical sori on both sides of the blade or in marginal lobes or proliferations. After comparing it to other members of the Phycodrys group, we conclude that Womersleya is a monotypic genus well distinguished from other genera and with probable closest affinities to the Northern Hemisphere Polyneura, Erythroglossum and Sorella, as well as the Australian endemic, Crassilingua.  相似文献

对云南省瑞丽、景洪、化念、元江、河口的桔小实蝇5个地理种群共27个个体的线粒体细胞色素氧化酶Ⅰ(COⅠ) 基因进行了部分序列测定。序列的碱基变化中转换明显多于颠换、无碱基的插入和缺失。5个地理种群中共有27个多态位点和23种单倍型,其中2种为共享单倍型。桔小实蝇5个地理种群的Fst值在0.0364~0.1364之间(P>0.05), Nm值在3.88~13.25之间。对其所有单倍型聚类分析发现,单倍型在系统树中的分布散乱、混杂,没有显示出明显的地理分布族群。分析认为5个地理种群间已存有一定程度的遗传分化,但分化的程度还比较低。造成5个种群这种遗传分化的因素主要与地理隔离有关,而种群间低程度的遗传 分化估计与桔小实蝇在云南的发展历史及生态适应有关。  相似文献

Growth experiments measured the effects of an initial starvation period followed by a single nutrient pulse. Nutrient pulses were conducted at four different N-levels (65, 1514, 2900, and 6080 μg N L-1) and four different P-levels (84, 281, 639, and 849 μg P L-1) using isolates of Bostrychia moritziana (Sonder ex Kutzing) J.Agardh and Caloglossa leprieurii (Mon-tagne) G.Martens. Specific growth rates (% day-1) in primary axis length (6. moritziana only) and surface area were measured using digital imaging. Results showed that the specific growth rates of both algae were highly dependent on the N-levels of the seawater (P < 0.001–0.05). Specific growth rates for the B. moritziana were approximately 3.5% day-1 at t = 7 days declining to approximately 1.0–1.5% day-1 at t = 49 days for the primary axis length, and approximately 8–9% day-1 declining to approximately 2–3% day-1 for surface area. The specific growth rate declined more rapidly with decreasing N initially added to the medium. In C. leprieurii, the specific growth rates for all four conditions at t = 8 days were approximately 11–13% day-1, but N/O declined to approximately 3% day-1 whereas the others declined to only approximately 7–8% day-1 by t = 49 days. The effects of initial P-levels on growth varied, but generally indicated a direct relationship with specific growth rate. In C. leprieurii, the number of nodes and blades per plant was also measured via digital imaging and were found to increase with increasing N-levels, whereas P-levels had no influence. It was concluded that B. moritziana and C. leprieurii are prone to N-limitation, but P-limitation is less prone. Using digital imaging to measure the specific growth rate in total surface area and primary axis length provided a significantly more accurate depiction of the rate of growth than some of the more conventional means of measuring growth rate.  相似文献

Time-lapse videomicroscopy was used to observe the effects of various cytoskeletal inhibitors on three important fertilization events in Bostrychia moritziana: spermatial mitosis, gamete fusion (formation of a fertilization pore) and nuclear migration along the trichogyne. The microtubule inhibitor oryzalin disrupted spermatial mitosis but had no other effect on fertilization. The actin inhibitors, jasplakinolide, cytochalasin B, latrunculin A and B and mycalolide B inhibited gamete fusion while BDM, a myosin-disrupting drug, inhibited all three major fertilization events. FL-Phallacidin was used to stain actin filaments in spermatia and trichogynes while microtubules were labelled with antibodies at appropriate stages of fertilization. Microtubules were only evident during spermatial nuclear division. Actin filaments were present in both trichogynes and spermatia throughout fertilization; they formed a discrete ring around the fertilization pore and ensheathed male nuclei as the latter migrated into and along the trichogyne. These results suggest that the actin/myosin system plays a role in the events of fertilization.  相似文献

A new member of Delesseriaceae (Ceramiales, Rhodophyta) is described from Southern Taiwan and the Philippines. On the basis of comparative vegetative and reproductive morphology, and phylogenetic analysis inferred from nuclear-encoded large-subunit ribosomal DNA sequences (LSU rDNA), we conclude that it belongs in the genus Drachiella, tribe Schizoserideae, subfamily Phycodryoideae. The new taxon shares with other Drachiella species the absence of macro- and microscopic veins; diffuse growth by marginal and intercalary meristematic cells; a polystromatic, lobed thallus; abundance of rhizoidal marginal proliferations used for attachment; convoluted plastids in surface cells; abundant secondary pit connections among adjacent vegetative cells; large intercellular spaces between surface cells; procarps confined to the upper side of the thallus, circular in outline, consisting of a supporting cell bearing a strongly curved carpogonial branch and two sterile groups that remain undivided; vertical division of gonimoblast initial from auxiliary cell, and unilateral, monopodial branching of gonimoblasts; and mature cystocarps with a massive candelabrum-like fusion cell of fused gonimoblasts bearing carposporangia in branched chains. It is distinguished from the other members of the genus by thalli that consist of extensive tangled mats of prostrate and overlapping decumbent blades, procarps confined to the upper side of the thallus, and the lack of basal stalks or stipes. Whereas the Schizoserideae is predominantly a Southern Ocean tribe, one of the tribe's four genera, Drachiella, was known only from the eastern Atlantic and Mediterranean. We herein report the first record of the genus for the Indo-Pacific Ocean, and describe Drachiella liaoii, sp. nov., as a fourth species in the genus.  相似文献

The aim of the current investigation was to test the general convention that the Dasyaceae, Delesseriaceae and Rhodomelaceae are all monophyletic families of the red algal order Ceramiales. Phylogenetic relationships among 45 ceramialean taxa were determined, including eight ceramiacean, 18 dasyacean, nine delesseriacean and eight rhodomelacean species, plus two of uncertain ceramialean affinities, based on 34 anatomical characters and nuclear small subunit (SSU) rDNA sequences. Results from our ‘total-evidence’ approach were consistent with the notion that the Dasyaceae, Delesseriaceae and Rhodomelaceae have evolved from a common ancestor within a paraphyletic Ceramiaceae. Our data indicate, however, that the Rhodomelaceae alone is monophyletic at the family level, with both the Dasyaceae and Delesseriaceae polyphyletic. In particular we resolved two independent and well-supported lineages for the included Dasyaceae, viz., a Dasya group and a Heterosiphonia group, which were as distinct from one another as they were from the Rhodomelaceae and the various lineages of Delesseriaceae. The molecular data alone were equivocal on the issue of monophyly of the Dasyaceae. We therefore advocate conservative taxonomic revisions as an interim step towards eventual resolution of familial-level taxonomy in the Ceramiales. Based on our results, the Heterosiphonioideae H.-G. Choi, Kraft, I.K. Lee et G.W. Saunders subfam. nov. is proposed for Heterosiphonia and five closely related genera, and the Dasyoideae Schmitz et Falkenberg is emended for the remaining taxa. Although the Dasyoideae is a natural group, it is in need of a thorough systematic reinvestigation at the generic level. Our analyses indicate that the genus Dasya is polyphyletic or paraphyletic in excluding Dasysiphonia, Eupogodon and Rhodoptilum and that Heterosiphonia japonica also has affinities to this group, taxonomic issues that will be addressed in detail elsewhere.  相似文献
