Recent reviews on trait-mediated interactions in food webs suggest that trait-mediated effects are as important in triggering top–down trophic cascades as are density-mediated effects. Trait-mediated interactions between predator and prey result from non-consumptive predator effects changing behavioural and/or life history traits of prey. However, in biological control the occurrence of trait-mediated interactions between predators, prey and plants has been largely ignored. Here, we show that non-consumptive predator effects on prey cascade down to the plant in an agro-ecological food chain. The study system consisted of the predatory mites P. persimilis and N. californicus , the herbivorous non-target prey western flower thrips F. occidentalis and the host plant bean. Irrespective of predator species and risk posed to prey, the presence of predator eggs led to increased ambulation, increased mortality and decreased oviposition of thrips. Furthermore, the presence of predator eggs reduced leaf damage caused by thrips. To our knowledge this is the first experimental evidence suggesting a positive trophic cascade triggered by non-consumptive predator effects on non-target prey in an augmentative biological control system.  相似文献

Plants are faced with a trade-off between on the one hand growth, development and reproduction and on the other hand defence against environmental stresses. Yet, research on insect-plant interactions has addressed plant-pollinator interactions and plant-attacker interactions separately. Plants have evolved a high diversity of constitutive and induced responses to attack, including the systemic emission of herbivore-induced plant volatiles (HIPVs). The effect of HIPVs on the behaviour of carnivorous insects has received ample attention for leaf-feeding (folivorous) species and their parasitoids and predators. Here, we review whether and to what extent HIPVs affect the interaction of plants in the flowering stage with mutualistic and antagonistic insects. Whereas the role of flower volatiles in the interactions between plants and insect pollinators has received increased attention over the last decade, studies addressing both HIPVs and pollinator behaviour are rare, despite the fact that in a number of plant species herbivory is known to affect flower traits, including size, nectar secretion and composition. In addition, folivory and florivory can also result in significant changes in flower volatile emission and in most systems investigated, pollinator visitation decreased, although exceptions have been found. Negative effects of HIPVs on pollinator visitation rates likely exert negative selection pressure on HIPV emission. The systemic nature of herbivore-induced plant responses and the behavioural responses of antagonistic and mutualistic insects, requires the study of volatile emission of entire plants in the flowering stage. We conclude that approaches to integrate the study of plant defences and pollination are essential to advance plant biology, in particular in the context of the trade-off between defence and growth/reproduction.  相似文献

Background

The epicuticular waxy layer of plant leaves enhances the extreme environmental stress tolerance. However, the relationship between waxy layer and saline tolerance was not established well. The epicuticular waxy layer of rice (Oryza sativa L.) was studied under the NaHCO3 stresses. In addition, strong saline tolerance Puccinellia tenuiflora was chosen for comparative studies.

Results

Scanning electron microscope (SEM) images showed that there were significant changes in waxy morphologies of the rice epicuticular surfaces, while no remarkable changes in those of P. tenuiflora epicuticular surfaces. The NaHCO3-induced morphological changes of the rice epicuticular surfaces appeared as enlarged silica cells, swollen corns-shapes and leaked salt columns under high stress. Energy dispersive X-ray (EDX) spectroscopic profiles supported that the changes were caused by significant increment and localization of [Na+] and [Cl] in the shoot. Atomic absorption spectra showed that [Na+]shoot/[Na+]root for P. tenuiflora maintained stable as the saline stress increased, but that for rice increased significantly.

Conclusion

In rice, NaHCO3 stress induced localization and accumulation of [Na+] and [Cl] appeared as the enlarged silica cells (MSC), the swollen corns (S-C), and the leaked columns (C), while no significant changes in P. tenuiflora.  相似文献

The relationship between algae and their zooplanktonic predators typically involves consumption of nutrients by algae, grazing of the algae by zooplankton which in turn enhances predator biomass, controls algal growth and regenerates nutrients. Eutrophication raises nutrient levels, but does not simply increase normal predator-prey activity; rather, harmful algal bloom (HAB) events develop often with serious ecological and aesthetic implications. Generally, HAB species are outwardly poor competitors for nutrients, while their development of grazing deterrents during nutrient stress ostensibly occurs too late, after the nutrients have largely been consumed already by fast-growing non-HAB species. A new mechanism is presented to explain HAB dynamics under these circumstances. Using a multi-nutrient predator-prey model, it is demonstrated that these blooms can develop through the self-propagating failure of normal predator-prey activity, resulting in the transfer of nutrients into HAB growth at the expense of competing algal species. Rate limitation of this transfer provides a continual level of nutrient stress that results in HAB species exhibiting grazing deterrents protecting them from top-down control. This process is self-stabilizing as long as nutrient demand exceeds supply, maintaining the unpalatable status of HABs; such events are most likely under eutrophic conditions with skewed nutrient ratios.  相似文献

泌蜡昆虫体表除了具有和其他昆虫一样的薄蜡层之外,还具有特殊的蜡腺,在生长发育过程中能够分泌蜡质覆盖于体表,从而有利于昆虫防止体内水分过度蒸发、抵御外界多种不利条件、阻碍病原物入侵和躲避天敌寄生或捕食,对昆虫的生存和繁衍具有重要的保护作用。本文概述了蚧虫、蚜虫、蜡蝉、木虱、粉虱和粉蛉等6类常见泌蜡昆虫的蜡腺和蜡泌物的超微形态结构、蜡泌物的主要化学组成及泌蜡的分子机制等方面的研究进展,以期为今后其在昆虫分类学和系统发育学的研究以及在害虫防治中的应用提供参考。  相似文献

Regeneration of plant epicuticular waxes was studied in 24 plant species by high-resolution scanning electron microscopy. According to their regeneration behaviour, four groups could be distinguished: (i) regeneration occurs at all stages of development; (ii) regeneration occurs only during leaf expansion; (iii) regeneration occurs only in fully developed leaves; (iv) plants were not able to regenerate wax. Wax was removed from the leaves with water-based glue and a liquid polymer, i.e. water-based polyurethane dispersion. In young leaves these coverings could not be removed without damaging the leaves. After a few days, waxes appeared on the surface of these polymer films, which still adhered to the leaves. It is concluded that waxes move through the cuticle in a process similar to steam distillation. This hypothesis could be further substantiated in refined in vitro experiments. Wax isolated from Eucalyptus globulus was applied to a filter paper, subsequently covered with a liquid polymer and fixed onto a diffusion chamber filled with water. The diffusion chamber was put into a desiccator. After 8-10 days at room temperature, crystals similar in dimensions and shape to in situ crystals appeared on the surface of the polyurethane film. This indicates that waxes in molecular dimensions move together with the water vapor that permeates through the polymer membrane. Based on these results, we propose a new and simple hypothesis for the mechanism of wax movement: the molecules that finally form the epicuticular wax crystals are moved in the cuticular water current.  相似文献

Plant traits can affect ecological interactions between plants, herbivores, and predators. Our study tests whether reduced leaf wax in peas alters the interaction between the pea aphid ( Acyrthosiphon pisum), a foliar-foraging predator (a lady beetle, Hippodamia convergens) and a ground-foraging predator (a ground beetle, Poecilus scitulus). We performed a 2×2×2 factorial experiment in which wax level, presence of H. convergens, and presence of P. scitulus were manipulated. Experimental arenas consisted of a cage surrounding three pea plants. One plant in each cage was stocked with 15 pea aphids. In greenhouse and field cage experiments, we assessed the effect of each factor and their interactions on aphid density. As in previous studies, H. convergens foraged for aphids more effectively on reduced wax peas than on normal peas. Other interactions among H. convergens, P. scitulus , and A. pisum were the same on both types of peas. We consider how aphid movement, plant growth, and a high frequency of predation by P. scitulus on H. convergens influenced pea aphid density.  相似文献

Anthropogenic changes in organismal distributions have affected many, if not all, terrestrial ecosystems. Anthropogenic plant range expansions (APREs) may have profound effects on the population genetics of native phytophagous insects exploiting recent changes in plant distributions. Here I focus on the important, although often overlooked, effects on insect species which feed on such plants, but do not show evidence of host race formation. This article investigates geographic range expansion and increased interpopulation gene flow, which may occur as a result of phytophagous insects exploiting APREs. The two effects have clear predicted genetic signatures: (1) geographic range expansion should result in low levels of genetic diversity in new portions of the insect species' range, relative to older, pre-APRE portions of the range and (2) increased interpopulation gene flow will result in reduced population genetic differentiation. Data from the literature are qualitatively consistent with the predictions of one or both population genetic change scenarios. Higher order effects, such as reduced local adaptation, increased spread of resistance in agricultural systems, and hybridization among formerly isolated lineages, as evidenced by case studies, and the economic and conservation implications thereof are also discussed. Finally, I outline future approaches for addressing the impact of APREs on native phytophagous insect ecology and discuss the application of these concepts of population genetic change and resultant outcomes to research outside plant–insect interactions.  相似文献

Seasonal polyphenism in animal colour patterns indicates that temporal variation in selection pressures maintains phenotypic plasticity. Spring generation of the polyphenic European map butterfly Araschnia levana has an orange–black fritillary‐like pattern whilst individuals of the summer generation are black with white bands across the wings. What selects for the colour difference is unknown. Because predation is a major selection pressure for insect coloration, we first tested whether map butterfly coloration could have a warning function (i.e. whether the butterflies are unpalatable to birds). In a following field experiment with butterfly dummies we tested whether the spring form is better protected than the summer form from predators in the spring, and vice versa in the summer. The butterflies were palatable to birds (blue tits Cyanistes caeruleus) and in the field the spring and summer form dummies were attacked equally irrespective of season. Therefore, we found no evidence that the map butterfly is warning‐coloured or that seasonal polyphenism is an adaptation to avian predation. Because insect coloration has multiple functions and map butterfly coloration is linked to morphology, life history and development it is likely that the interplay of several selection pressures explains the evolution of colour polyphenism. © 2012 The Linnean Society of London, Biological Journal of the Linnean Society, 2012, ?? , ??–??.  相似文献

In a laboratory study, we determined the functional response of the carnivorous aquatic plant Utricularia vulgaris feeding on Polyphemus pediculus, a cladoceran zooplankton that forms swarms. The number of prey eaten increased linearly with prey density up to a density of 35 prey per 125 ml and decreased slightly above this density. Independent estimates of handling time showed that the number eaten was not limited by handling. Thus, we hypothesized that the functional response levelled off because attack rate decreased with increasing density. Direct observations of the predation act at high and low prey densities showed that prey per capita mortality rate was markedly lower at high densities. An analysis of the components of the predation cycle showed that encounter rate and attack probability but not capture success decreased with increasing prey density. We, then, studied the degree of aggregation and the movement behaviour of Polyphemus . The tendency to form swarms increased with density and this was associated with reduced swimming speed and swimming along a more tortuous path. Presence of Utricularia leaves did not influence the spatial distribution and swimming behaviour of Polyphemus . We concluded that the unusual shape of the functional response was due to density dependent prey mortality rates that resulted from a density dependent tendency to form swarms. We, therefore, suggested a modification of Holling's type II functional response model that included density dependent attack rate and this model fitted data significantly better than the original model.  相似文献

The idea that galling insects actively manipulate host plant chemistry has been previously documented but has not been quantified across a range of galler and host plant taxa. We present the first quantitative review of the relationship between insect galling and levels of secondary metabolites in host plants. Using meta-analytic techniques, we examined this relationship across 40 galler and host plant species combinations. We found that galling insects are associated with significantly higher levels of tannins and phenolics; however, no difference was found for volatiles. Hymenoptera, Diptera and Hemiptera were associated with higher levels of secondary metabolites; however, only Hymenoptera was significant. The climatic zone of the study area did not explain significant differences in gall-induced secondary metabolites. Overall the results show that the ability of galling insects to manipulate host plant secondary chemistry is widespread across insect and plant taxa. The evolutionary success of galling insects may be in part due to this unique ability.  相似文献

【目的】探究小麦捕食性昆虫群落结构以及动态规律,为小麦害虫的生物防治提供科学依据。【方法】试验采用了网捕法、陷阱法、黄盘法和马氏网法定期采集地表、小麦植株上的捕食性昆虫,并将其带回实验室进行鉴定、计数和数据分析。【结果】两年共采集捕食性昆虫1 479头,属于4目7科22种,其中龟纹瓢虫Propylaea japonica(Thunberg,1781)为优势种;小麦拔节期之前几乎没有捕食性昆虫,抽穗期和扬花期捕食性昆虫个体数和物种数逐渐增加,灌浆期和乳熟期物种数继续增加、个体数则迅速增多;捕食性昆虫群落的Shannon-wiener多样性指数H′、均匀度指数E,均随时间整体呈现低-高-低-高的变化趋势,而优势集中性指数C和优势度B则整体呈现高-低-高-低的变化趋势。【结论】该研究结果对小麦害虫的生物防治具有指导意义。  相似文献

Abstract Females of the rove beetle genus Paederus (Coleoptera: Staphylinidae) accumulate large amounts of the defensive compound pederin produced by an endosymbiotic bacterium. Pederin is transferred in the eggs, while the endosymbionts are transmitted via the egg shell. In all three species analyzed (P. melanurus, P. riparius, and P. sabaeus), descendants of aposymbiotic matrilines (lacking both endosymbionts and biosynthetic capabilities) acquire biosynthetic capability by the ingestion of eggs with endosymbionts during larval development. Successful colonization by endosymbionts depends on the number of eggs consumed and the age of the feeding larvae. During the adult stage, however, the females cannot acquire biosynthetic capabilities. Adult females are able to sequester pederin from eggs eaten, and they transfer the substance into their own eggs. Lack of intrinsic biosynthesis after ingestion of endosymbionts indicates that these are not biosynthetically active within the gut and have to reach an unknown internal location before completion of metamorphosis. These results are discussed with regard to the benefit of intraspecific cannibalism.  相似文献

Detection of aphid remains in predatory insects and spiders by ELISA   总被引:7,自引:0,他引:7  
An ELISA was developed which would detect and quantify ingested aphids in predators found in and around cereal crops. The detection limit of the assay was less than one hundredth of an homogenised adult aphid. Tests with 13 species of aphid showed that those which had been used as the principal immunogens reacted most strongly in the assay. Nearly a hundred species of invertebrates, both predators and alternative prey, have been tested in the assay and no evidence of significant cross-reaction was found with any of these species or with a number of samples of plant material on which aphids may be found. Aphid material could still be detected in predators which had been stored for up to 7 days in 4% formalin or 70% ethanol.  相似文献

Summary Various environmental factors were investigated to analyse those involved in successful overwintering and possibly overwintering site selection for Tachyporus hypnorum and Demetrias atricapillus, both important coleopteran predators of cereal aphids. The results of the study indicated food supply to be important for both predator species during the winter period, although the role of biotic factors in site selection in the autumn could not be clearly demonstrated. The winter distribution of the two species could, however, be explained well in terms of abiotic factors. It is suggested that these and other similar predator species have well-defined overwintering requirements and that these can be exploited in the management of field boundary habitats.  相似文献

Distribution among pools of six mosquito species and 23 predatory insect taxa were studied in temporary rain pools during the summer and fall season in Buenos Aires city. Both mosquito immatures and predators were disproportionally more abundant in pools with high flooded surface, depth, and duration. Mosquito immatures differed in their habitat use with respect to predators. Among mosquitoes, Ochlerotatus albifasciatus showed a different pattern when compared to the remaining culicids. More culicid and predatory insect taxa colonized the pools in those flooding events of longer duration. Ochlerotatus albifasciatus was the only mosquito species recorded during short duration events and the first one in colonizing the pools in long duration events. This species shared the pools mainly with early arriving adult predators. Three Culex species were recorded later and showed higher coexistence with most of the predatory taxa, mainly immatures of the genera Tropisternus, Rhantus, Liodessus, and Belostoma. A high heterogeneity between pools and seasons was observed. Multiple regression analyses showed a negative relationship of per capita change of Culex species with large-sized predators only in those cases where predators were collected in high abundances during the summer. No negative relationship of predators was detected in relation to per capita change and abundance of Ochlerotatus albifasciatus. Differences in duration of about two to three weeks seemed to significantly affect the abundance of both culicid and predatory taxa, suggesting that the urban pools analyzed in this study are on the extreme of suitable conditions for these aquatic insects.  相似文献
