A large number of contact chemoreceptors are located on the ovipositor valves of adult female grasshoppers. These receptors play an important role in many aspects of grasshopper life such as detecting the chemical composition of the soil before and during oviposition. It is surprising, however, to find these types of receptors on the ovipositor valves of instar larvae which are not able to oviposit. Thus, these receptors may serve functions other than to search for a suitable site for egg laying. Observation under the scanning electron microscope revealed the presence of uniporous basiconic contact chemoreceptors in addition to different types of trichoid mechanoreceptors on the ovipositor valve of lubber grasshopper 3rd instar larvae. Neuroanatomical studies have shown that these sensilla are multiply innervated, containing one mechanosensory neuron and four chemosensory neurons that project locally and intersegmentally. The tip recording technique from single basiconic sensilla demonstrated mechanosensory responses to deflections of the sensillum as well as gustatory activity when in contact with different chemical solutions. The electrophysiological studies have shown that these sensilla serve as contact chemoreceptors and not as olfactory receptors.  相似文献

The ovipositor of the parasitoid wasp Trybliographa rapae was examined by scanning and transmission electron microscopy. Characteristic peg-like sensilla with a cuticular ring at the base are found at the tip of the ventral valves, where they occur in a characteristic arrangement of triplets. The unusual basal structure probably protects the sensilla against damage during movement through the substrate and piercing of the host cuticle. These sensilla are each innervated by six dendrites, some of which have lamellated tips, generally considered to be characteristic of thermosensitivity. It is suggested that the remaining dendrites are gustatory, and as such probably respond to factors present in host haemolymph. A second type of peg-like sensillum is found on both the dorsal and the ventral valves. These are set in deep pits so that only the tip of the peg protrudes above the surface of the cuticle. These occur along the length of the ovipositor shaft and ultrastructural studies reveal the pegs to be innervated by a single mechanosensitive dendrite, probably monitoring the movement of the ovipositor through the substrate.  相似文献

The ovipositor of Rhagoletis pomonella (Walsh) (Diptera : Tephritidae) has a dorsal process which terminates distally in a slightly upcurved tip and 2 ventral processes that are joined throughout their length by a membrane up to the region of the cloaca, where the ventral processes are not attached. The surface of the ovipositor contains both hair-like and campaniform mechanosensilla capable of monitoring both cuticular stress and mechanical contact of the ovipositor from the initial through the final steps of penetration of the fruit, egg-laying, copulation, and possibly dragging the ovipositor during deposition of the oviposition deterrent pheromone. Near the tip of the ovipositor are 2 longitudinally aligned grooves, each containing 3 pairs of chemosensilla. In addition, 1 pair of shorter chemosensilla are just distal to and outside the groove. All chemosensilla contain 3 or 4 chemosensitive neurons. During fruit penetration and egg-laying, the ovipositor is protracted, thus placing the chemosensilla in contact with various fruit chemicals. These chemosensilla are responsive to naturally occurring fruit chemicals. The possible role of the ovipositor chemosensilla in monitoring fruit quality, the deposition of the oviposition deterrent pheromone, the presence of chemical contaminants on the ovipositor, and the female's own accessory reproductive gland secretions remains to be established.  相似文献

Chemosensory information is crucial for most insects to feed and reproduce. Olfactory signals are mainly used at a distance, whereas gustatory stimuli play an important role when insects directly contact chemical substrates. In noctuid moths, although the antennae are the main olfactory organ, they also bear taste sensilla. These taste sensilla detect sugars and hence are involved in appetitive learning but could also play an important role in food evaluation by detecting salts and bitter substances. To investigate this, we measured the responses of individual taste sensilla on the antennae of Spodoptera littoralis to sugars and salts using tip recordings. We also traced the projections of their neuronal axons into the brain. In each sensillum, we found one or two neurons responding to sugars: one NaCl-responsive and one water-sensitive neuron. Responses of these neurons were dose-dependent and similar across different locations on the antenna. Responses were dependent on the sex for sucrose and on both sex and location for glucose and fructose. We did not observe a spatial map for the projections from specific regions of the antennae to the deutocerebrum or the tritocerebrum/suboesophageal ganglion complex. In accordance with physiological recordings, back-fills from individual sensilla revealed up to four axons, in most cases targeting different projection zones.  相似文献

The present paper aims at describing the fine structure of coeloconic sensilla located on the cutting valves of the endophytic ovipositor of two Odonata species, the anisopteran Aeshna cyanea (Aeshnidae) and the zygopteran Ischnura elegans (Coenagrionidae), by carrying out parallel investigations under SEM and TEM. In both species these coeloconic sensilla are innervated by four unbranched neurons forming four outer dendritic segments enveloped by the dendrite sheath. One dendrite terminates at the base of the peg forming a well developed tubular body, while the other three enter the peg after interruption of the dendrite sheath. The cuticle of the peg shows an apical pore and a joint membrane. This last feature, together with the tubular body and the suspension fibers, represent the mechanosensory components of the sensillum while the pore and the dendrites entering the peg allow chemoreception. The ultrastructural organization of these coeloconic sensilla is in agreement with the one reported for insect gustatory sensilla. Our investigation describes for the first time typical insect gustatory sensilla in Odonata. Electrophysiological and behavioral studies are needed to verify the role that these structures can perform in sensing the egg-laying substrata.  相似文献

The solitary parasitoid Leptopilina heterotoma is one of the best studied organisms concerning the ecology, behaviour and physiology of host discrimination. Behavioural evidence shows that L. heterotoma uses its ovipositor to discriminate not only between parasitized and unparasitized Drosophila melanogaster larvae, but also to discriminate between hosts with different numbers of parasitoid eggs. The existing knowledge about how and when the parasitoid marks the host motivated us to unravel the chemosensory basis of host discrimination by L. heterotoma that allows it to choose the “best” host available. In this paper we report on electrophysiological recordings of multi-neural responses from the single taste sensillum on the tip of the unpaired ovipositor valve. We stimulated this sensillum with haemolymph of unparasitized, one-time-parasitized and two-times-parasitized Drosophila larvae. We demonstrate for the first time that quantitative characteristics of the neural responses to these haemolymph samples differed significantly, implying that host discrimination is encoded by taste receptor neurons in the multi-neuron coeloconic ovipositor sensillum. The activity of three of the six neurons present in the sensillum suffices for host discrimination and support the hypothesis that L. heterotoma females employ an ensemble code of parasitization status of the host.  相似文献

Abstract.  The host acceptance behaviour in Aphidius ervi is investigated, assessing the role of both external and internal host-associated cues, offered to the experimental parasitoids with parafilm-made aphid dummies. The reaction to internal cues present in the host haemolymph is clearly evident, and its intensity is enhanced by external cues. Parasitoid females lay few eggs in aphid dummies filled with host haemolymph. A significant increase in the number of both oviposition reactions (host stinging) and egg laying is observed only when these dummies are coated with cornicle secretion. However, this enhancement is not observed when the aphid dummies contain distilled water. Thus, the host acceptance behaviour of A. ervi females appears to be controlled by the integration of both external and internal chemical cues. The physiological basis of this behavioural response is investigated with a detailed study on the anatomy and ultrastructure of A. ervi ovipositor. The detection of chemical cues present in the host haemolymph that act as kairomones is made possible by the presence of gustatory sensilla on the tip of the ovipositor. These sensilla consist of porous areas, reached by unbranched dendrites running inside both the lower valves (i.e. first valvulae) and the unpaired upper valve (i.e. second valvulae). The mechanosensory function during oviposition appears to be provided mostly by the basiconic sensilla found on the tip of external valves (i.e. third valvulae). A tentative functional model accounting for the observed oviposition behaviour of A. ervi is proposed.  相似文献

ABSTRACT. The ovipositor of the female sheep blowfly, Lucilia cuprina (Wied.) (Diptera: Calliphoridae), has a complement of cercal sensilla that includes long, medium and short tactile hairs, two campaniform domes, four olfactory pegs, and ten double-channelled gustatory hairs. This sensory array is suited to assess oviposition site resources, prior to and during the laying of an egg batch.
The tactile hairs and campaniform sensilla are each innervated by a single, tubular body containing dendrite. The olfactory pegs are each innervated by a single, moderately branched dendrite, which gains access to the external environment via pores at the bottom of deep grooves in the peg wall. The gustatory hairs fall into two categories. Four hairs have a single, tubular body containing dendrite at their base, and four unbranched dendrites running up to the hair tip which has a terminal pore. Six of the taste hairs have no tubular body containing dendrite at the base, and three unbranched dendrites running up to a terminal pore.  相似文献

The electrical responses of the neurons associated with the various types of chemosensory hairs of the blowfly, Phormia regina Meigen, following stimulation by chemical and mechanical means have been studied. The singly innervated chemosensory hairs on the ovipositor, maxillary palpi, and antennae respond vigorously to chemical stimulation, but not to mechanical stimulation. The triply innervated chemosensory hairs on the labellum, tarsus, and wing have two neurons which respond only to chemical stimuli. The third neuron responds only to mechanical stimulation. The differential responses of the two chemosensory neurons to various chemical stimuli following the removal of the tip of the hair suggest that the structures responsible for chemoreception are located throughout the distal processes of these neurons. The response of the third neuron to mechanical stimulation is similar to the response recorded from the neuron associated with one type of tactile hair which responds to motion and not to steady deformation. Recordings have been made from the neurons associated with purely tactile hairs using the cut hair as an extension of the micropipette. The mechanosensory neuron of the wing chemosensory hair is capable of responding at the rate of at least 600 impulses per sec. and may serve to indicate changes in air flow over the wing surfaces during flight to enable the fly to correct the wing camber and attack angle.  相似文献

Females of most psychomyiid species bear an elongated ovipositor enabling them to oviposit their eggs into grooves and cavities in different kinds of substrates in freshwaters. Although the preference of psychomyiid species for oviposition into distinct substrates and the subsequent larval life performance in aquatic habitats is already known, the mode of oviposition and the functional morphology of the elongated ovipositor have not been described until now. In this study we present SEM photographs of some psychomyiid species with female ovipositors of different lengths and shapes, explaining their preference for oviposition into distinct substrates. Additionally, we discuss some ecological aspects of the ovipositor shapes and the mode of egg laying for psychomyiids. The female ovipositor consists of two body segments, with an elongated IXth and a distinctly shorter Xth segment, which is flexible and can be pushed up dorsally when releasing the eggs. On the basis of SEM photographs, we suppose that the opening of the channel through which the eggs were released is located ventrally near the ovipositor tip. The ovipositor itself is characterised by a ventral cleft reaching from the gonoporus of segment IX to the tip of the last segment X. We stored adult females abdomina overnight in different aqueous dilutions of ethanol leading to different stages of swelling of the ovipositors (grade of swelling in distilled water >30% ethanol >70% ethanol). Some internal membrane-like structures, normally infolded into the ovipositor, became visible by the swelling of the ovipositor. We discuss the possible rearrangement of the organisation of segment IX resulting in the development of an ovipositor on the basis of SEM photographs of the differently swollen ovipositors.  相似文献

Observations of oviposition behaviour by Chilo partellus revealed that antennae, ovipositor tip and possibly tarsi were all involved in the choice of oviposition site. Among a very large number of typical mechanoreceptor hairs on the tip of the ovipositor valves, two pairs of stouter, blunt-tipped hairs were discovered. These hairs alone took up silver nitrate stain and transmission electron microscope sections revealed that the hair shaft had a hollow lumen within which ran a group of four or five dendrites. It is concluded that these sensilla are contact chemoreceptors and they are positioned in such a way that, with the placing of each egg, they would contact the oviposition substrate. Similar hairs were found on the ovipositor of Spodoptera littoralis . It is suggested that the hairs may prevent oviposition on surfaces directly chemically harmful to the eggs.  相似文献

Some compounds that are bitter-tasting to humans, both alkaloidal (quinine, quinidine, atropine, caffeine) and non-alkaloidal (denatonium benzoate, sucrose octaacetate, naringin), deterred feeding and oviposition by Heliothis virescens (F.) in laboratory and field cage experiments. Preliminary electrophysiological studies of gustatory sensilla on the ovipositor of H. virescens provided evidence of 3 neurons, one of which is responsive to sucrose. Preliminary indications are that responses of this neuron may be inhibited by quinine and denatonium benzoate.  相似文献

Observations on the host attack behaviour of the parasitoid Leptopilina heterotoma (Hymenoptera : Eucoilidae) led to the supposition that this wasp should possess a structure on its ovipositor by which it can hold a host larvae in a fixed position until the larva is paralyzed. The ovipositor was studied by light, scanning and transmission electron microscopy and appeared to have a clip with teeth on the unpaired valve of the ovipositor, about 50 μm from the tip. Based on the structure of this ovipositor clip and the oviposition behaviour, the functioning of the ovipositor clip is discussed.  相似文献

The effects of six terpenoids and two terpenoid containing extracts of the neem tree (Azadirachta indica A. Juss.) on oviposition by the diamondback moth (Plutella xylostella L., Yponomeutidae: Lepidoptera) were tested. Two drimane terpenoids, the sesquiterpenoid polygodial and the neem extract Margosan-O exerted significant inhibitory effects at the dosages tested. Ablation experiments showed that both antennae and fore-tarsi contributed to mediation of the inhibition by a drimane. Location of chemosensilla on prothoracic tarsi and ovipositor was examined by scanning electronmicroscopy. Electrophysiological recordings from ovipositor and tarsal taste sensilla showed that distilled water produced distinct responses from one neuron. In tarsal sensilla, ethanol and drimane solutions produced responses from two neurons, one of which might be the water cell that fired at a reduced rate. A drimane significantly decreased the responses of tarsal chemoreceptors to a cabbage leaf extract, which is a possible sensory mechanism leading to behavioural avoidance of this compound.  相似文献

The tip of the maxillary palp in the spruce budworm and other lepidoptera larvae contains a cluster of eight basiconic sensilla. Except for a few electrophysiological recordings from the entire group of these sensilla, no information is available on the response characteristics of any individual one. Using a compound microscope at 320x magnification, with a long working-distance objective, it has been possible to view individual sensilla and to record electrical responses from three of these to some gustatory stimuli in preliminary tests. One of them, sensillum (L1), contains a sugar-sensitive neuron whose responses to a range of sucrose concentrations are reported here. The physiological characteristics of this neuron differ from those of the known sugar-sensitive neuron in the lateral styloconic sensillum on the galea of these same insects. Input of chemosensory information about the same gustatory stimulus by more than one neuron in different mouthpart sensilla is discussed in relation to the feeding habits of the spruce budworm.  相似文献

Two braconid parasitoids of cereal stemborers in eastern Africa, Cotesia sesamiae and Cotesia flavipes, have been shown to display a similar hierarchy of behavioural events during host recognition and acceptance. In order to understand the mechanisms underlying host recognition and acceptance, the morphology of antennal sensilla on the last antennomeres, on the ovipositor, and on the fifth tarsomere and pretarsus of the prothoracic legs tarsi were studied using scanning electron microscopy followed by selective silver nitrate staining. It appeared that female C. sesamiae and C. flavipes shared the same types and distribution of sensory receptors, which enable them to detect volatiles and contact chemical stimuli from their hosts. In both parasitoids, four types of sensilla were identified on the three terminal antennomeres: (i) non-porous sensilla trichodea likely to be involved in mechanoreception, (ii) uniporous sensilla chaetica with porous tips that have gustatory functions, (iii) multiporous sensilla placodea, which are likely to have olfactory function, and (iv) sensilla coeloconica known to have thermo-hygroreceptive function. The tarsi of both parasitoids possessed a few uniporous sensilla chaetica with porous tips, which may have gustatory functions. The distal end of the ovipositor bore numerous dome-shaped sensilla. However, there were no sensilla coeloconica or styloconica, known to have gustatory function in other parasitoid species, on the ovipositors of the two braconid wasps.  相似文献

The host-handling behavior of individual female waspsDiglyphys minoeus which attack the larvae of the honeysuckle leaf-miner,Phytomyza lonicerae, include 4 types of behavior: probing, ovipositor insertion, host-feeding, and resting. Ovipositor insertion may either be injection of venom, probing of the host by the sensilla on the ovipositor's tip or egg laying. Three types of attacks were distinguished: oviposition attack for unparasitized larvae, host-feeding attack for unparasitized host larvae and host rejection for previously parasitized host larvae. Oviposition attack was characterized by frequent alternation between probing and ovipositor insertion, long duration of ovipositor insertion and resting, and the long duration of host-handling. Resting behavior is thought to protect the progeny against superparasitism, host-feeding by other wasps or hosts' recovery from paralysis. Host-feeding attack was characterized by frequent alternation between host-feeding and ovipositor insertion and long duration of host-feeding. Host rejection was composed mainly of probing and ovipositor insertion and short handling time.   相似文献

Pheromonal communication is crucial with regard to mate choice in many animals including insects. Drosophila melanogaster flies produce a pheromonal bouquet with many cuticular hydrocarbons some of which diverge between the sexes and differently affect male courtship behavior. Cuticular pheromones have a relatively high weight and are thought to be -- mostly but not only -- detected by gustatory contact. However, the response of the peripheral and central gustatory systems to these substances remains poorly explored. We measured the effect induced by pheromonal cuticular mixtures on (i) the electrophysiological response of peripheral gustatory receptor neurons, (ii) the calcium variation in brain centers receiving these gustatory inputs and (iii) the behavioral reaction induced in control males and in mutant desat1 males, which show abnormal pheromone production and perception. While male and female pheromones induced inhibitory-like effects on taste receptor neurons, the contact of male pheromones on male fore-tarsi elicits a long-lasting response of higher intensity in the dedicated gustatory brain center. We found that the behavior of control males was more strongly inhibited by male pheromones than by female pheromones, but this difference disappeared in anosmic males. Mutant desat1 males showed an increased sensitivity of their peripheral gustatory neurons to contact pheromones and a behavioral incapacity to discriminate sex pheromones. Together our data indicate that cuticular hydrocarbons induce long-lasting inhibitory effects on the relevant taste pathway which may interact with the olfactory pathway to modulate pheromonal perception.  相似文献

Sex pheromone components of the female Crocidolomia binotalis, an insect pest of cabbages in Indonesia, were identified from the ovipositor tip extract of virgin females by analyzing with chromatographic fractionation and capillary GC/MS. In an EAG response and attractivity test with a wind tunnel system, a mixture of synthetic compounds, (Z)-9-tetradecenyl acetate (Z-9- TDA) and (Z)-l 1-hexadecenyl acetate (Z-ll-HDA), in the ratio of 1:7—1:60 and an amount of 1 ~ 50 ng on a filter paper, showed strong activities comparable to the activity of the ovipositor tip extract, which contained the two compounds at a ratio of c. 1:10 (Z-9-TDA : Z-l 1-HDA). The mixture of these two compounds might be the sex pheromone of C. binotalis.  相似文献

ABSTRACT. Single cell recordings in the mushroom body area of the bee revealed that the majority of cells responds to more than one modality. Five different modalities were tested: light, scent, sugar-water applied to the antennae or the proboscis, and mechanical stimuli of the antennae (air puffs). The background discharge (spontaneous) frequency of the neurons was correlated with the recording site, being low in the calyx area and high in the area of the β-lobes. No correlation between the reaction spectra of neurons and the recording location was found. A simple classification of single cells into different classes is not possible. Some units change their response pattern during recording; this is interpreted as an indication of other inputs which were not controllable in the experiments. After-effects, lasting some seconds to minutes, were found with scent, light and sugar-water stimuli. The olfactory and gustatory inputs obviously play an important role in activating multimodal units. Some neurons showed increasing sensitivity for a scent after a number of olfactory conditionings. An increase of sensitivity in these units is correlated with an increase of the spontaneous discharge frequency.  相似文献
