New chloranthaceous floral structures from the Late Cretaceous (Late Santonian/Early Campanian) of Scania, southern Sweden, have provided important new information on theChloranthistemon plants. The material includes well preserved fragments of inflorescence axes with flowers in situ documenting thatChloranthistemon flowers were bisexual and closely resembled those of extantChloranthus (Chloranthaceae). An emended diagnosis is given for the type species of the genus,Chloranthistemon endressii, and a new species,C. alatus, is described. The flowers ofChloranthistemon are small, perianthless and strongly zygomorphic, consisting of a tripartite and broadened androecium borne in an abaxial to lateral position on the monocarpellate ovary, and arranged in the axils of decussate bracts. Stamens are either completely free (C. alatus), or free at the base and coherent at the apex (C. endressii). The apical connective is extensive in both species; elaborated into conspicuous wing-like structures inC. alatus, or into a massive and shield-like structure inC. endressii. Pollen grains ofC. endressii are spheroidal, and reticulate and spiraperturate, while those ofC. alatus are ellipsoidal, tectate and foveolate with a unique combination of a distal colpus and a proximal furrow (colpus?) perpendicular to each other. Ovaries observed in well preserved flowers of both species are small and undifferentiated. Larger, dispersed fruits of chloranthaceous affinity are abundant and distinct, and probably represent at least two or three species, but cannot be linked with certainty to any of theChloranthistemon species described here.  相似文献

A new halacarid species, Halacarellus fontinalis n. sp., from a spring in the Gesäuse National Park, Austria is described. The species is characterized by three pairs of large, equal-sized acetabula and slender claws and is expected to have evolved in the Tertiary from a Tethyan-Paratethyan Halacarellus species. CaspihalacarusViets, 1928, with a single species, C. hyrcanusViets, 1928, has large and external acetabula similar to those in H. fontinalis. Caspihalacarus is synonymized with Halacarellus.  相似文献

Five species of larval parasitoids were reared fromRhagoletis pomonella (Walsh) infested fruit of hawthorn,Crataegus, collected from several locations in southwest Washington over a four year period. A braconid,Biosteres melleus (Gahan), parasitized larvae infesting fruits of a native hawthorn species,Crataegus douglasii Lindl. Another braconid,Opius downesi Gahan, emerged exclusively fromR. pomonella pupae reared from fruits of an introduced species of hawthorn,Crataegus monogyna Jacq. A pteromalid,Pteromalus sp., and two eulophids,Tetrastichus spp., attackedR. pomonella larvae infesting fruits of both hawthorn species. No parasitoids emerged from a total of 4385 pupae reared from apple. Percent parasitism ofR. pomonella was higher inC. monogyna compared toC. douglasii fruits. The highest average levels of parasitism ofR. pomonella inC. monogyna andC. douglasii fruits were 90% and 23% respectively. The kinds of parasitoids, their relative abundances and timing of parasitization on the two hawthorns was related to differences in fruit ripening patterns and its effect on the development ofR. pomonella on these two hosts. Parasitization ofR. pomonella byTetrastichus spp. is a new host record. The detection of these species andPteromalus sp. in southwest Washington are the first records of ectoparasitoids attacking this tephritid.  相似文献

Many species of Western Australian Cyperaceae (sedges) are vital components of the indigenous flora but commonly display low seed set, poor seed quality and intractable seed dormancy. We report the effects of incubation temperature and in vitro growth media on whole seed germination compared with extracted zygotic embryo growth in Tetraria capillaris, T. octandra, Lepidosperma drummondii and L. tenue. No germination was observed from intact whole seeds of all test species regardless of the treatment evaluated. In contrast, excised zygotic embryos of all study species exhibited significant increases in growth when cultured at 15°C compared to embryos incubated at 25°C; however, optimal media for embryo growth were genera specific. Extracted embryos of T. capillaris and T. octandra exhibited maximum percentage growth (30 and 40%, respectively) at 15°C on ½ MS medium with no plant growth regulators required. In the case of L. drummondii and L. tenue 1 μM thidiazuron was a necessary addition to the ½ MS medium resulting in 40 and 77% growth of embryos (at 15°C), respectively. Incubation of extracted embryos at 25°C (regardless of medium treatment) resulted in <10% embryo growth for T. octandra and L. tenue, while the remaining two species (L. drummondii, T. capillaris) showed no embryo growth at 25°C on any medium treatment.  相似文献

The host specificity of a chrysomelid beetle,Calligrapha pantherina Stål, from Mexico, was verified in the CSIRO quarantine facilities in Brisbane, Australia on 80 species of plants in 28 families, either closely related to Malvaceae or in families containing economically important species.C. pantherina oviposited and developed successfully on its preferred host,S. acuta, and less successfully onS. rhombifolia andS. spinosa, all of which are weeds in Australia. Aspects of oviposition, larval development, and adult feeding and longevity ofC. pantherina are described.C. pantherina was released in Australia during 1989 and readily established onS. acuta but established at only a few sites onS. rhombifolia.  相似文献

Detailed analysis of 270 specimens of Conocephalum conicum (L.) Dumort., mainly from the POZW Herbarium revealed some diagnostic differences between two cryptic species originally detected on the basis of isozyme studies. Several diagnostic characters were found in the structure of the archegoniophore, sporophyte and sterile thallus. The most reliable diagnostic features are size and structure of stomatal apparatus of the archegoniophore ‘heads’, type of junction of the air chamber walls with epidermal cells, and the thallus surface details. On the basis of morphological and anatomical diagnostic characters, two formerly cryptic species are recognized following the rules of formal taxonomy. The lectotype of C. conicum preserved in FI was found to possess characteristics of cryptic species C. conicum- species L. Accordingly, the species previously named as C. conicum–species L must bear the name Conocephalum conicum (L.) Dumort. No published name was related to C. conicum – species S, which is therefore described as a new species: Conocephalum salebrosum Szweykowski, Buczkowska &; Odrzykoski. Both species are fully described and their diagnostic characters are illustrated. Distribution maps for both species are given.  相似文献

Species delimitation in Cystoderma and Cystodermella was evaluated based on ITS and LSU rDNA sequences as well as morphological data. Two species of Cystoderma are synonymised with C. carcharias and three species with C. jasonis, distinguishing the synonymised taxa as varieties of these accepted species. Analyses of partial LSU rDNA sequences revealed Cystoderma and Cystodermella as distinct monophyletic genera, with Ripartitella representing a well-supported sister group of the latter. Phaeolepiota aurea represents either an unsupported sister group or member of Cystoderma in the phylogenies based on LSU and ITS sequences rDNA data, respectively. The tribe Cystodermateae sensu Singer did not appear monophyletic according to analyses of LSU sequences. On the basis of these data, the phylogenetic relationships among most of the analyzed genera could not be resolved unequivocally.  相似文献

The geographical distribution of the parasitoid species associated with fruit flies in Costa Rica is presented. In a study of 319 fruit samples infested with larvae of fruit flies, collected from 135 localities, 8 parasitoid species were recovered from 11.0% of the fruit samples. Two species are considered to be indigenous, two were introduced for the biological control ofCeratitis capitata (Wiedemann) in this country, at least 3 unidentified species of eucoiline cynipoids and one species of uncertain origin was found for the first time. The identified parasitoids were:Doryctobracon crawfordi (Viereck) (indigenous),D. areolatus (Szépligeti) (indigenous),Biosteres longicaudatus Ashmead (introduced),Aceratoneuromyia indica (Silvestri) (introduced) andTrichopria sp. (indigenous?). The introduced species were more frequently associated withAnastrepha spp. than withC. capitata. The need for systematic monitoring of populations of released parasitoid species is suggested.  相似文献

Chaetoceros convolutus and C. concavicornis have been implicated in the death of salmon in netpens in the Pacific Northwest by damaging the salmon's gills. To better understand how environmental factors affect the distribution of these two species, the interacting effects of light, temperature and salinity on growth rate were examined by growing these species under a range of temperatures (4–18 °C), light (10–175 μmol photon m−2 s−1) and salinities (10–30‰). For C. convolutus, the growth rate showed a hyperbolic relationship with irradiance at 8, 14 and 18 °C and light saturation occurred at 9, 14 and 20 μmol photon mt s−1 respectively. At 4 °C for C. convolutus and 8 °C for C. concavicornis, cells grew at μmax, even at the lowest irradiances tested (10 μmol photon m−2 s−1). For C. convolutus, the amount of light required to saturate growth rate increased with temperature in an approximately linear fashion. The Q10 was 1.88, calculated by averaging over both species. C. concavicornis was the more euryhaline species growing at salinities as low as 17.5‰, while C. convolutus grew only at 25‰ and above.  相似文献

Of the 22 species currently recognized as valid in the Cryptosporidium genus, C. parvum and C. hominis account for most cases of human infections worldwide. However, C. meleagridis, C. canis, C. felis, C. suis, C. muris, as well as the cervine, rabbit and monkey Cryptosporidium genotypes, have also been recognized as the etiologic cause of both sporadic and epidemic cryptosporidiosis in humans. Molecular methods are necessary to distinguish species and genotypes of Cryptosporidium, due to the lack of reliable morphological variations. The aim of this work was to determine the genetic polymorphisms in a fragment of the A135 gene in isolates of C. parvum, C. hominis, C. meleagridis, C. canis, C. muris, C. andersoni and the Cryptosporidium cervine genotype. Primers were designed on conserved regions identified on a multiple alignment of the C. parvum, C. hominis and C. muris sequences, the three species for which information is available at the genome level. PCR amplification and direct sequencing of a 576 bp fragment revealed the presence of numerous single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) among the species/genotype tested. The genetic variability was exploited to design a PCR-RFLP assay useful for a rapid identification of the most important human pathogens in the genus Cryptosporidium.  相似文献

When two herbivore pest species are potential hosts of a single parasitoid species, two questions arise. Firstly, which host is preferable for mass rearing in terms of later parasitoid performance, and secondly, how do parasitoids perform in mixed herbivore situations after colony establishment? We tested Hyssopus pallidus, a gregarious parasitoid of two major pests of apple, Cydia (Grapholita) molesta and Cydia pomonella, before and after landing on apples infested by one of the two Cydia species. Pre-alighting host preference was tested in a Y-tube olfactometer setup, and parasitism success in a contact bioassay. To gain information on parasitoid performance throughout the growing season, different fruit growth stages were used. Irrespective of the host they had developed on, the parasitoids showed similar olfactory preferences when given a dual choice between infested and healthy fruits, and they did not discriminate between fruits infested by C. molesta and C. pomonella. Responsiveness was generally high, especially late in the season close to harvest. Both hosts are parasitized regardless of the host the parasitoid female had developed on, and no differences in parasitism rates or number of offspring were noted for the two hosts offered. Results were consistent for all apple growth stages tested. In conclusion, mass rearing of this parasitoid can be carried out on either host, without limiting the future efficacy of the bio-control agent. Similarly, established colonies are expected to develop further on both hosts without any bias in host preference.  相似文献

Chestnut blight fungus (Endothia parasitica [Murr.] P.J. And. &; H.W. And.)) is a classic example of an invasive species, which severely damaged populations of its host, Castanea dentata, and had widespread and long-term impacts on eastern North American forests. Concurrently, forests were further disturbed by lumbering, which was common across the region from the mid 1800s to the early 1900s. In 1926, local infestations of chestnut blight were reported in the Coweeta Basin, Southern Appalachian Mountains of North Carolina. We used permanent plot inventories of the Basin (first sampled in 1934 and twice afterward in 1969–72 and 1988–93) to describe the distribution of species along a complex environmental gradient. Specifically, we asked: How does vegetation change over approximately 60 years following logging and the demise of C. dentata? Does the association between vegetation and environment determine the pattern of species distributions through time? Which species replaced C. dentata across this complex environmental gradient? We used nonmetric multidimensional scaling ordination and multiresponse permutation procedure for the analyses of the inventory periods. In 1934, C. dentata was the most important species in the Coweeta Basin. It was present in 98% of the plots and contributed 22% of the total density and 36% of the total basal area. Diversity increased significantly over time and was attributed to an increase in evenness of species distribution. The canopy dominant, C. dentata, was replaced by more than one species across the environmental gradient. Importance values of Quercus prinus, Acer rubrum, Cornus florida, Tsuga canadensis, and Oxydendrum arboreum increased by 2–5% across the basin following the decline of C. dentata. Tsuga canadensis increased in abundance and distribution, especially near streams across elevations. Liriodendron tulipifera replaced C. dentata in moist coves, which have low terrain shape and high organic matter content. In contrast, Q. prinus and A. rubrum were ubiquitous, much like C. dentata before the chestnut blight becoming dominant or co-dominant species across all environmental conditions.  相似文献

The Odysseus (OdsH) gene was duplicated from its ancestral neuron-expressed gene, unc-4, and then evolved very rapidly under strong positive Darwinian selection as a speciation gene causing hybrid-male sterility between closely related species of the Drosophila simulans clade. Has OdsH also experienced similar positive selection between Drosophila sibling species other than those of the simulans clade? We cloned and sequenced OdsH and unc-4 from two clades of the Drosophila montium species subgroup, the Drosophila lini and the Drosophila kikkawai clades. The ratios of Ka/Ks for OdsH were remarkably low between sibling species of these two clades, suggesting that OdsH has been subjected to strong purifying selection in these two clades.  相似文献

Bacteria of the genus Burkholderia are a typical component of the microbial complex of Sphagnum peat bogs and constitute a substantial portion of the aerobic chemoorganotrophic isolates which are routinely obtained from these environments on an acidic nutrient media. The ecophysiological characteristics of the 27 strains of such organisms, which were isolated from the peat of acidic Sphagnum bogs of the boreal and tundra zones of Russia, Canada, and Estonia, were investigated in the present study. Most of the Burkholderia strains isolated from these bogs were phylogenetically close to the species B. glathei, B. phenazinium, B. fungorum, and B. caryophylli, the typical inhabitants of soil and plant rhizosphere. The bog isolates utilized a broad range of substrates as carbon and energy sources, including organic acids, sugars, polyalcohols, and certain aromatic compounds. All the strains studied were capable of growth on nitrogen-free media. They developed in the pH range of 3.5 to 7.4 and from 3 to 37°C, with the optima at pH 5–7 and 11–23°C, respectively. They were therefore moderately acidophilic, psychroactive, dinitrogen-fixing microorganisms well adapted to the conditions of acidic northern Sphagnum bogs.  相似文献

A new species ofCroton,C. dissectistipulatus, is described from Amazonian Brazil. This species is superficially similar toC. timandroides from northeastern and southeastern Brazil, but differs in having petiolate leaves with glandular margins, persistent stipules, conspicuous racemose inflorescences, staminate flowers having externally glabrous sepals and 3 stamens, and pedicellate pistillate flowers. The systematic position ofC. dissectistipulatus relative to the sections ofCroton is discussed.  相似文献
