The feeding behaviour of the freshwater piscivore, Clarias gariepinus (C. lazera) (C & V 1840) was studied over two periods: 1973–1975 and 1981–1982, in Lake Kinneret (Israel). The total number of fish analysed was 264 and their sizes (SL) and weights varied between 238 and 830 mm (146 to 5728 g). More than fifty species of plants and animals from the plankton, benthos and nekton of Lake Kinneret were identified in the intestines of C. gariepinus. Preyed fish were the most abundant food component (81%) and constituted the highest biomass, with Mirogrex terraesanctae representing the majority (although other species were also found). The potential impact of piscivory in the Kinneret ecosystem is considered.  相似文献

Experiments were conducted to determine the adaptability of young catfish, Claria lazera , to various saline concentrations. Young catfish, total length 52–88 mm, were subjected to abrupt and gradual changes from fresh water (salinity = 0.14‰) to various salinities. Ninetyfour per cent survival occurred when the fish were transferred from fresh water to 25% sea water (salinity = 9.5‰ No fish survived higher salinities even through gradual change.  相似文献

革胡子鲶生长激素cDNA克隆与蛋白质结构分析   总被引:4,自引:0,他引:4  
从革胡子鲶(Clarias lazera(Burchell))的脑垂体组织中提取总RNA, 应用RT-PCR方法, 扩增得到了革胡子鲶生长激素(Growth hormone, GH)基因cDNA的开放阅读框(Open reading frame, ORF)序列。ORF全长为603 nt, 编码由22个信号肽氨基酸和178个成熟肽氨基酸共同组成的生长激素前体蛋白。序列同源比较结果表明, 研究中得到的革胡子鲶生长激素氨基酸序列与GenBank中已报道的其他6种鲶形目鱼类的氨基酸序列同源性高达95.8%。二级结构预测分析结果表明, 革胡子鲶生长激素蛋白中含有a 螺旋、b 折叠和b 转角以及无规卷曲等二级结构, 以a 螺旋为主, 是典型的a 型结构蛋白质。此外, 抗原性分析表明, 在氨基酸序列中的4个区域均可形成优势抗原表位, 其结构特点非常适合改造成为重组生长激素疫苗或单克隆抗体制剂加以开发利用。  相似文献

Histopathological changes involved in Ichthyophthirius multifiliis infections are described from a wide range of host fishes—carp, crucian carp hydrids, Carassius carassius × C. auralus , goldfish, eels, African catfish, Glorias lazera , several species of cichlid fishes and rainbow trout. Fish were obtained from diverse geographical regions: Israel, South Africa, Portugal and Venezuela, as well as from laboratory experimental infections. Observed histopathological changes could not demonstrate any interspecific differences, but individual fish or different groups of fish of the same species demonstrated wide variability in susceptibility to infection and consequently in the nature and severity of the histopathological response. Low to moderate primary infection and secondary reinfestations did not induce significant histopathological changes in the integument. The proliferative response of the integumentary epithelium appeared only following subsequent infections. Repeated heavy reinfections induced massive cellular necrosis and in very heavy infections extensive lysis of the epithelial tissue. Host-parasite interactions in the light of the histological findings are discussed.  相似文献

1. The fresh-water fish, Clarias lazera, was exposed to 13 lethal and sublethal concentrations of mercury. 2. The median tolerance limit (TLm) at different exposure periods, 24, 48, 72 and 96 hr, appears to be as follows: 0.96, 0.88, 0.81 and 0.72 ppm Hg2+/l, respectively. 3. From the subacute tests, the maximum acceptable toxicant concentration (MATC) for this fish was between 0.10 and 0.22 ppm Hg2+/l. 4. Behavioural changes, tissue Hg2+ distribution and serum ionic patterns were recorded during both the acute and subacute exposure periods.  相似文献

Increase in serum transaminases (GOT and GPT) activity attributable to nitrite toxicity was observed in juvenile Clarias lazera after chronic exposure to nitrite. The application of SGOT and SGPT assays for monitoring the effect of nitrite exposure over a 6-month period has shown that changes in activities are correlated with histological effects in Clarias liver. Kidneys from fish exposed to nitrite were not noticeably different histologically from that of control fish. Hypertrophy and hyperplasia were the most consistent lesions that occurred in the gills. Lifting of lamellar epithelium and necrosis of some epithelial cells were also prominent.  相似文献

A total of 1872 bones from a fish eagle roost at Lake Turkana, Kenya was identified and analysed to provide data on fish eagle prey and diet. The approach of this study complements field observation studies in that it provides a long‐term analysis and quantification of the diet, rather than short qualitative observations. The study found that, at least where fish is relatively abundant, fish eagles are both selective and opportunistic: selective in taking preferred fish in much greater proportions than natural availability, and also in avoiding unwanted fish regardless of abundance, but opportunistic in taking certain other species in proportion to their availability. They also show considerable selection in size and habitat preferences of prey. Non‐fish prey forms a considerable proportion of the diet, and probably represents both opportunistic hunting, possibly when conditions for fishing are poor, and killing of other predators robbing fish eagle nests.
As well as describing and quantifying the fish eagle diet at Lake Turkana, data from this study suggest that further study is needed to quantify the impact of fish eagle predation on Clarias lazera , a rare, but valuable species to the Lake Turkana fishery. The study of bird roost prey remains also provides baseline data for studies of fossil microfaunal accumulations. Scatters of bones under fish eagle roosts are common in eastern Africa, and undoubtedly contribute to many of the fossil bone accumulations recovered. One of us (DM) has noted that the taxonomic and skeletal composition of the Koobi Fora roost bears a great resemblance to some of the clusters she is analysing from Olduvai Gorge. Further similar studies will provide additional data on bird roost accumulations.  相似文献

The toxicity to Clarias lazera of copper and zinc applied jointly   总被引:5,自引:0,他引:5  
1. The acute toxicity to juvenile Clarias lazera of a mixture of copper and zinc over a 96 hr exposure period was determined. Fish were exposed to the summation of half the 96 hr TLm value of each toxicant. 2. Percentage survival was much reduced indicating that the metals potentiate each others lethal action. 3. Comparison between metal residues in fish exposed to copper and zinc or to their mixture showed that the uptake of one metal was decreased by the presence of the other. 4. Toxic effects of the mixture on the physiological parameters studied were mainly attributable to copper, indicating that the presence of zinc did not influence the mode of action of copper.  相似文献

用光镜和电镜研究了革胡子鲇(Clariaslazera)原生殖细胞的起源迁移,卵巢在第1次性周期内的分化与发育以及各发育时期卵母细胞的超微结构。原生殖细胞起源于内胚层,有固定的迁移路线,进入生殖嵴后,生殖嵴进一步分化,出现卵巢腔分化成卵巢,卵母细胞在第1次性周期内的发育可分成6个时相,描述了各时相卵母细胞的显微结构与超微结构。同时,叙述了卵母细胞中卵黄发生的形态形成。  相似文献

Subadult teleosts, Tilapia zilli and Clarias lazera, were exposed in laboratory bioassays to lethal and sublethal concentrations of zinc, seasonally (at range of temperature between 9.3 +/- 1.5 and 25 +/- 1 degree C). It appears that Tilapia is more susceptible to Zn than Clarias and both species are more resistant to Zn toxicity at lower temperature (during winter). To determine the uptake and tissue distribution of Zn in the two species, gill, liver and muscles were analysed at moderate temperature (during spring). After a 96 hr exposure period, Zn was decreased in the following order: gill greater than liver greater than muscle.  相似文献

The stomach contents of the fishes of the Upper Ogun River were scrutinised for three consecutive years. 8 out of the 36 species resident in the river are predominantly piscivorous. These are Mormyrops deliciosus, Hydrocynus forskahlii, Hepsetus odoe, Bagrus docmac, Lates niloticus and Hemichromis fasciatus. Piscivorous habits in Schilbe mystus and Eutropius niloticus are less developed. Three others, viz: Clarias lazera, Heterobranchus longifilis and Channa obscura, which were classified as piscivores by other workers, were caught. The stomachs of C. obscura examined were all empty while those of C. lazera and H. longifilis contained mainly aquatic invertebrates. The major prey of these piscivores are small sized Barbus spp. Other prey fishes include mormyrids, characids, cyprinids, citharinids, catfishes and cichlids. The relationships between the piscivorous and prey fishes and the partitioning of the available resources by these piscivores are discussed.  相似文献

Eustrongylides sp. larvae were found to be numerous in Bagrus docmac, Clarias mossambicus and Haplochromis spp. from Lake Victoria, rare in Haplochromis spp. and absent from B. docmac and C. lazera from Lake George, East Africa. Larvae encyst in the mesenteries, spleen and in Haplochromis spp. also in the gonads. Unencysted larvae were observed in muscles. Cyst walls consisted of fibroblasts, collagen strands, and were often infiltrated with fat cells. Fatty changes were observed in infected spleens; the muscle tissue, around the unencysted worms, was digested and infiltrated with fibroblasts. Infected gonads, particularly ovaries were deformed and in heavy infections degenerated completely. The biological implication of this infection with larval Eustrongylides sp. on the host populations in Lake Victoria is discussed.  相似文献

Hatchery reared Atlantic salmon ( Salmo salar L.) parr were tagged with the standard I.C.E.S./I.C.N.A.F. salmon tag at water temperatures of 15°C and 6°C. They were then subjected to swimming trials in a tunnel respirometer. Following this treatment the 15°C fish developed necrotic infarcts around the tag insertions. Provided they did not become infected these lesions healed, but if the fish were retested 9 days later, the wound enlarged, became extremely inflamed, and the fish died soon after. This effect was not seen in 6°C fish.  相似文献

1. Myofibrillar adenosine triphosphatase (ATPase) activities were measured for white myotomal muscle of 19 species of fish. 2. The activity was measured at different temperatures and after periods of preincubation at 37 degrees C. 3. The inactivation half-life at 37 degrees C depended on environmental temperature, increasing as the temperature increased. 4. Cold-water fish had higher myofibrillar adenosine triphosphatase activity at low temperatures than had warm-water fish. 5. The significance of these results is discussed.  相似文献

Antarctic fish have a high polyunsaturated lipid content and their muscle cells have a high mitochondria density suggesting that Antarctic fish are under greater oxidative stress than temperate water fish. To test this hypothesis, the plasma concentrations of the antioxidant vitamins E and C were measured in two Antarctic fish species, Pagothenia borchgrevinki and Trematomus bernacchii, and compared with the plasma concentrations of these vitamins in two New Zealand temperate water fish species, blue cod (Parapercis colias) and banded wrasse (Notolabrus fucicola). Neither vitamin is known to be synthesised in fish and so must be obtained from the diet. The plasma from both Antarctic fish species had vitamin E concentrations five to six times higher than those found in the two temperate water fish species. However, significantly higher levels of vitamin C were only found in the plasma of T. bernacchii, a benthic Antarctic fish. The average level of vitamin C in the plasma of the cryopelagic P. borchgrevinki was approximately one-third that of T. bernacchii. The T. bernacchii plasma yielded a high range of vitamin C values, possibly reflecting differences in nutritional status among the animals captured. No beta-carotene was found in any of the fish plasma samples studied. The data suggest that even though Antarctic fish live at -1.5 degrees C they may be exposed to greater metabolic stress from free radical mediated oxidation than temperate water species.  相似文献
