Summary The physical induction of recombinational events has been studied in the female silkworm (Bombyx mori), in which crossing-over does not normally occur. Female silkworms heterozygous in the trans type of two egg-color genes,pe (V-0.0) andre (V-31.7), received a single dose of X-rays (1000 R) at various developmental stages. Then they were crossed to marked males homozygous for both genes. The results indicated that X-rays increase the occurrence of recombinational events in silkworm females from first instar larvae to late stage pupae. The spontaneous frequency of exchange type recombinants in the control series was 2.5 x 10–5, while after irradiation the frequency of these recombinants was up to 38.8 x10–5. The sensitive stage to X-ray-induced recombinational events was late stage larvae from fourth to fifth instar. Exchange (cross-over) type recombinants were about three times more frequent than interchange types among the 122 recombinants recovered. The biological significance of the present finding is discussed.  相似文献

1 The generation time of the bark beetle predator Thanasimus formicarius (L.) (Col.: Cleridae) was found to be predominantly two years both in the field and in rearing experiments conducted with two of its main prey species, the pine shoot beetle Tomicus piniperda (L.) and the spruce bark beetle Ips typographus (L.) (Col.: Scolytidae). 2 Emergence of T. formicarius adults in the first summer was only observed in one of the two rearing experiments, and these individuals represented only 6% of that generation. 3 All individuals not emerging as adults in the first summer remained as larvae in their pupal chambers until the second summer. Pupae were found starting around mid-June, and adults (in pupal chambers) were found from late July through to the end of August. 4 Newly emerged adults had to feed in order to survive hibernation. 5 The existence of T. formicarius races, specialized on certain bark beetle species and with phenologies matching their hosts, could not be demonstrated. After hibernation there was no difference in feeding activity, timing of egg-laying or proportion of egg-laying females between the T. formicarius adults reared as larvae on T. piniperda (flight period in April) and those reared as larvae on I. typographus (main flight period generally starting in late May or early June) when exposed to a temperature and day-length typical of the early spring conditions prevailing during the flight period of T. piniperda. 6 T. formicarius was parasitized by Enclisis vindex (Tschek) (Hym.: Ichneumonidae) in the pupal chamber. 7 The importance of these findings for the population dynamics of bark beetles is discussed.  相似文献

Abstract.
  • 1 Third instar larvae of A.rufipes were found in short vertical shafts in the soil beneath horse dung and they entered the underground brood masses of G.spiniger when these occurred beneath the same deposit of dung.
  • 2 A.rufipes larvae excavated shafts (60–80mm deep) beneath dung in cages. Just before diapause they burrowed down to the floor of the cage. Burrowing was inhibited in compact soil and in very dry soil. The feeding larvae were attracted to dung and to moisture and they readily attacked other larvae with their mandibles.
  • 3 In cages which contained G. spiniger nests the A.rufipes larvae burrowed down to feed on the G.spiniger brood masses. G.spiniger eggs and larvae did not act as attractants but they were often destroyed if the A.rufipes larvae encountered them by chance.
  • 4 In cages which contained G.stercorarxus nests A.fossor larvae burrowed down to feed on the brood masses if no dung was provided at the surface.
  • 5 This non-obligatory parasitism arises from the normal behaviour of the larvae and is usually of trivial significance, but under certain conditions the protected environment of an underground nest may favour the survival of the invading larvae.

Abstract

Sublethal effects of medetomidine, a new generation antifouling compound, on lumpfish (Cyclopterus lumpus L.) and cod (Gadus morhua L.) larvae were examined. The effects on respiration rate and on colour adaptation of newly hatched larvae were assessed after 24–96 h exposure. Exposure of lumpfish larvae to the experimental concentrations resulted in a significant decrease in respiration rate (Lowest Observed Effect Concentration (LOEC) = 5–10 nM) and in the percentage of dark larvae (LOEC = 4 nM). However, no effects on respiration rate of cod larvae were detected. In addition to lumpfish larvae being affected at low concentrations of medetomidine, a reversibility of the effects was observed when 96 h-exposed larvae were incubated in clean seawater for 24–48 h. Considerations relating to the future commercialisation of medetomidine for antifouling purposes are discussed.  相似文献

The feeding behaviour of the freshwater leech Erpobdella octoculata was analysed by exposing potential invertebrate and vertebrate prey organisms (alive, wounded or dead) to leech attack in dishes, in the laboratory. The fact that E. octoculata is a macrophagous feeder that swallows living prey organisms whole (preferentially Chironomus larvae) is documented. However, it was repeatedly observed that adult leeches sucked the body fluids from wounded larvae. Likewise, cut pieces of earthworms, dead crustaceans and crushed water snails were attacked and the soft parts sucked in with the aid of the unarmed pharynx. Adult leeches sucked the body fluids from dead, decaying bodies of vertebrates (fish, newt larvae). Newly hatched young are blood suckers that rapidly attacked the wounded regions of Chironomus larvae and other invertebrates such as crushed water snails. It is concluded that the common leech E. octoculata is not only a predator, but also a fluid sucker and a scavenger. The ecological implications of this finding are discussed.  相似文献

Adzuki bean beetle, Callosobruchus chinensis, is a worldwide oligophagous and a field‐to‐storage pest of legumes including adzuki beans (Vigna angularis). Its over‐wintering stage is yet to be confirmed. A series of experiments was carried out at Jinju, in the southern part of the Republic of Korea, to elucidate the overwintering stages. Top‐ and sub‐soil samplings followed by pod and seed samplings from left over plants from adzuki bean fields in the winter of 2015, and an outdoor overwintering test (during Nov 2018 to Jun 2019) by exposing bean seeds harboring different stages (eggs, larvae, pupae, pharates and adults) of laboratory reared C. chinensis to the winter environment were carried out. None of the C. chinensis stages was detected from the top‐ and sub‐soil samples. When the pods and seeds from left over plants were sampled, only a few live pupae were obtained. In the outdoor test with laboratory reared C. chinensis, all the stages (larvae, pupae, and adults), except eggs, were detected on every other weekly samples of infested adzuki bean seeds throughout the winter. These results showed that the overwintering stages of C. chinensis in Jinju, southern Korea, are larvae, pupae, pharates and adults.  相似文献

Abstract.
  • 1 Female beetles working alone or in cooperation with a male excavated vertical, tunnel-shaped brood chambers. Each chamber was filled with dung to form a cylindrical brood mass which contained two eggs, one near each pole.
  • 2 To examine the possible relationship with other Onitini (which lay either one or several eggs per brood mass) factors that influence the two-egg programme were studied. Brood masses with only a single egg were formed if excavation was resumed prematurely. Conversely, when excavation was suppressed several oviposition programmes fused to produce a multi-egg brood mass.
  • 3 The larvae repaired their chambers in the typical Scarabaeine manner by building a self-supporting wall formed from their own excrement. This behaviour also prevented direct contact and fighting between adjacent larvae in the same brood mass, and it allowed the larvae to survive inside artificial brood balls. Similar behaviour was observed in larvae of Onthophagus taunts and Ontho-phagus vacca (which develop in one-egg brood masses). The evolution of nesting habits that involve multi-egg brood masses or free-standing brood balls may depend on the pre-existence of this larval repair behaviour.

Effects of mothers' eclosion and oviposition timing on the survival of their offspring in the pierid butterfly Anthocharis scolymus (L.) was examined. I recorded the performance of individual eggs and larvae that differed in their mother's eclosion and oviposition timing in a natural population, where A. scolymus feeds on Turritis glabra (L.) Bernh. Eggs laid early in the season, and larvae emerging from these eggs, had higher survival than eggs laid later, and larvae emerging from eggs that were laid later in the season, the causal factor being egg cannibalism by larvae on the same host plant. Logistic regression showed that females eclosing early in the season had higher offspring survival than females eclosing later. I conclude that optimal timing of adult eclosion in A. scolymus is a trade-off between eclosing early with associated higher offspring survival but lower egg-laying rate, and eclosing later with associated lower offspring survival but higher egg-laying rate. Fumigant activity of essential oil vapours distilled from Zingiber officinale (L.) and Mentha pulegium (L.) was tested against eggs, larvae and adults of Callosobruchus maculatus (F.). Fumigant toxicity was assessed at 27?±?1?°C and 60?±?5% RH, in dark condition. The influence of different concentrations of the essential oil vapours on egg hatchability, larval and adult mortality was significant. Data probit analysis showed that lethal concentration of the essential oil to kill 50% of the population (LC50) for egg, larvae and adult was found to be 1.151, 2.336 and 2.183?μl/l air of Z. officinale, followed by 0.072, 0.113 and 0.093?μl/l air essential oil of M. pulegium, respectively. Between these essential oils, Z. officinale is almost more toxic than M. pulegium on all growth stages of C. maculatus. The present study suggests that essential oils from these medicinal plants may be potential grain protectants as botanical alternative fumigants and could be used in the management of various life stages of C. maculatus.  相似文献

The distribution and behaviour of larval and juvenile perch (Perca fluviatilis L.) were studied for two years in large, deep Lake Constance. After hatching larvae were transported by water currents to the open water. The majority of larvae remained in the pelagic zone for about one month. In both years, their return to the littoral zone coincided with the decline of pelagic zooplankton abundance. After returning to the littoral zone, juveniles stayed among submerged macrophytes within 5 m depth and lived apart from larger perch which lived at depths of 6–20 m. By late summer, juveniles changed their distribution pattern: during the day they stayed intensively close to piers and ports, but increased their swimming activity at dusk, cruising among shallow and deep waters and feeding on zooplankton, and rested on the bottom at night. This behaviour appears to be related to the decrease of inshore food resources and to the presence of predators in deeper water. 0+ perch left the littoral zone and moved into deep waters when autumnal mixing began in late October. They overwintered near the bottom at depths of more than 30 m. During most of the year, juvenile and adult perch were separated from each other. But as soon as they occupied the same habitat, the occurrence of cannibalism increased.  相似文献

Bioassay studies were conducted to investigate the influence of Dimilin (diflubenzuron), a chitinsynthetase inhibitor used for insecticidal control of the gypsy moth, Lymantria dispar, on the development and viability of a microsporidian pathogen of L. dispar. Before or after an infection with a Nosema species, L. dispar larvae were fed Dimilin in sublethal dosages. Dimilin fed to L. dispar larvae at 0.65 ng/cm2 diet surface resulted in a total larval mortality of 53%. Although the microsporidian infection alone did not cause high mortality rates (9%), mortality increased to 96% when L. dispar larvae were inoculated with both Dimilin and Nosema spores. When Dimilin was fed to the larvae 24 h before or 6 days after inoculation with the microsporidium, the number of mature spores produced was significantly reduced. When Dimilin was fed to the larvae 24 h after microsporidian inoculation, the number of spores produced was not significantly reduced. Spores that were produced in larvae after Dimilin had been ingested with the diet were less infectious than spores produced in control larvae; the experimental infection rate decreased from 94% when spores obtained from control larvae were used, to 48 or 10% when spores obtained from larvae fed Dimilin 24 h or 6 days after Nosema inoculation, respectively, were used. Mature microsporidian spores washed in Dimilin solution prior to oral inoculation, however, were as infectious as spores stored in liquid nitrogen. We have shown that Dimilin interferes with the establishment of the parasite in its host. In addition, when Nosema sp. succeeds in infecting the L. dispar host despite treatment with Dimilin, the microsporidium does not develop optimally and spore production is reduced.  相似文献

The diet of Abramis brama (L.) larvae reared in illuminated cages   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
The paper presents the results of investigations on the feeding of bream larvae reared in illuminated cages in a mesotrophic lake. The same species of zooplankton were found in both the lake and the fish cages. Copepoda predominated in abundance and biomass. During the mixed feeding the bream larvae diet consisted of rotifers (45.8%), small cladocerans (41.6%) and phytoplankton (13.6%). According to Ivlev's selectivity indices (E), the most important food species were: Keratella cochlearis (E = +9.94), Kellicotia longispina (E = +0.93), K. quadrata (E = +0.92), Bosmina longirostris (E = +0.92), Trichocerca sp. (E = +0.89), and Chydorus sphaericus (E = +0.88). The total length (TL) of bream larvae consuming their first nauplii and copepodites of Copepoda was 8.9 mm. As bream larvae grew, cladocerans were more often selected than rotifers. Copepods usually made up an insignificant component of the diet. Bream larvae in illuminated cages generally fed at night; their alimentary tracts were filled to the maximum in the period from sunset to sunrise. Indices thereof reached 755.6 at night and 278.0 ? in the daytime.  相似文献

The parasite Choetospila elegans is an ectoparasite on Coleoptera larvae and was studied in relation to Sitophilus granarius. Only 3rd and 4th stage larvae are parasitized, as a rule, and it is possible that late 2nd stage larvae are occasionally attacked.Larvae within grain are found by detection of mechanical stimuli set up by the larvae's activity which can be imitated by other animals moving within a hollow grain. This agrees with the fact that the parasites choose grains containing the largest of the active stages of the weevil.

The effect of phytoplankton size on feeding rates of planktonic larvae of the crown-of-thorns starfish Acanthaster planci (L.) was evaluated by examining their gut contents under an epifluorescence microscope. Concentrations of coccoid cyanobacteria in natural seawater ranged between 1.73 and 5.33×105 cells ml-1 and were three to four orders of magnitude greater than that of eukaryotes. Under these conditions, A. planci larvae ingested similar or smaller numbers of cyanobacteria than eukaryotes. Consequently, clearance rates of A. planci larvae on cyanobacteria were approximately three orders of magnitude lower than those on eukaryotes. Cyanobacteria and eukaryotes in the gut of A. planci larvae had mean equivalent spherical diameters (ESD) of 1–2 μm and 3.6–4.6 μm, respectively. Thus, the volume of cyanobacteria ingested was less than 10% of the volume of eukaryotes ingested. Acanthaster planci larvae were fed cultured phytoplankton Dunaliella tertiolecta and suspensions of three different sizes of plastic beads with fluorescence labelling. There was no significant difference in clearance rates on 6 and 20 μm plastic beads. Clearance rates on 1 μm plastic beads were, however, much lower than those on 6 and 20 μm plastic beads. Clearance rates of A. planci larvae on D. tertiolecta (ca. 5 μm ESD) were significantly higher than those on 6 and 20 μm plastic beads. Apart from particle size, this result shows that feeding of A. planci larvae is influenced by other properties of potential food particles. Accepted: 24 May 1996  相似文献

Abstract

Throughout a year gizzards from 160 adult and juvenile rooks and 105 large young in rookeries were collected from Hawke's Bay. The main foods were invertebrates (especially Diptera larvae and Coleoptera adults) during the warmer months and walnuts and acorns in autumn and winter. When these foods were scarce cereals were taken, mainly from stubble. Other important food items were carrion, earthworms, peas, grass, and clover. Foods fed to young rooks were similar to those eaten by adults except that the young were fed more striped dung fly (Hybopygia varia) larvae (P < 0.025) and fewer blow fly (Calliphoridae) larvae (P < 0.025).  相似文献

The effects of root feeding by larvae of Sitona hispidulus (F.) (a common weevil pest of white clover) on the rate of transfer of nitrogen between plants of white clover (Trifolium repens L.) and perennial ryegrass (Lolium perenne L.) were investigated using a nutrient slant board technique. Clover plants, labelled with 15N were grown adjacent to ryegrass plants and were either infested with Sitona larvae or not infested. Ryegrass plants associated with the infested clover plants had a significantly higher dry matter yield and nitrogen content (75% and 74% respectively) than the uninvested plants, after 33 days exposure to insect herbivory. It was concluded that root feeding insects could play an important role in the cycling of nitrogen in grass/clover swards.  相似文献

The efficacy of three entomopathogenic nematodes (Heterorhabditis spp.), from north western Himalaya, India was studied against the diamondback moth, Plutella xylostella (Linnaeus, 1758) (Lepidoptera: Plutellidae), under laboratory conditions. The larvae were exposed to 10, 20, 30 and 40 infective juveniles (IJs) of each nematode species for different time periods and they were found to be susceptible to all the EPNs tested. However, the susceptibility of larvae to nematode infection varied according to the dosages of IJs and their exposure periods. The efficacy of these indigenous entomopathogenic nematodes was also evaluated against the commercially available entomopathogenic nematode H. indica. An indigenous isolate, H. bacteriophora (HRJ), along with the commercial isolate H. indica recorded 100.0% mortality of insect larvae in 96 h exposure time against third instar larvae of P. xylostella. However, it was noticed that with the advancement of larval stage its mortality rate reduces and vice versa with the exposure period. All the tested nematode species were also found to reproduce within the host and produced infective juveniles. In conclusion, the evidence obtained in this study suggests that all the three indigenous EPN species are virulent enough to produce 100% mortality of larvae of P. xylostella. These EPN species thus have potential for the management of P. xylostella under integrated management practices.  相似文献

SUMMARY.
  • 1 The importance of bacteria in the diet of deposit-feeding mayflies (Stenonema spp.) from the Ogeecnee River, a sixth order low-gradient blackwater river in Georgia, U.S.A., was determined. Stenonema are abundant and productive on snags in biackwater rivers in the southeastern Coastal Plain of the U.S.A. Bacteria are abundant in the seston in this river, and are a potentially important food source.
  • 2 Naturally occurring seston was fed to Stenonema larvae after bacterial DNA in the seston was labelled with methyl-[3H]thymidine. Larval respiration measurements and growth rate estimations were used to compare the amount of bacterial carbon assimilated and retained in larval tissue to the carbon requirements of the larvae.
  • 3 Stenonema larvae incorporated 8.7×107±1.3×107 bacteria larva?1 h?1 This was equivalent to 93±6% of their daily growth, and 47±3% of their total daily carbon needs. Larger larvae incorporated more bacterial biomass, but mass specific incorporation was not related to size. Ingestion of bacteria while eating seston accumulated on snags appears to be an important component of the diet of Stenonema larvae in these rivers.

In vitro studies were carried out on the diamondback moth, Plutella xylostella larvae using an insect entomopathogenic nematode isolate, Steinernema carpocapsae obtained from the Koppert company, the Netherlands. Larvae of P. xylostella were collected from cabbage farms around Mashhad city of Iran. During the study, the responses of larvae at 25?°C for three periods of 24, 48 and 72?h with different concentrations of 0, 5, 10, 20, 40, 80, 160 and 320 third instar larvae of nematode (infective stage?=?IJs) per insect into 10?cm Petri dishes containing filter paper soaked with 1?ml of nematodes suspension were compared. Maximum mortality caused by S. carpocapsae nematode was 88% at 24?h, and it was 100% at 48 and 72 h. With increasing nematode population level and exposure time (ET in hour), mortality of P. xylostella larvae was increased. Based on probit analysis, LC50 values of S. carpocapsae nematode in three test periods were 45.61, 12.02 and 40.80 IJs per insect, respectively. Initial ANOVA was performed for S. carpocapsae nematode. The effect of both nematode population levels (IJ) and ET on third instar larvae of the diamondback moth, P. xylostella and interaction between IJ and ET were significant. In general, it is recommended to apply this nematode in suitable condition for controlling diamondback moth.  相似文献
