Background
The mal genes that encode maltose transporters have undergone extensive lateral transfer among ancestors of the archaea Thermococcus litoralis and Pyrococcus furiosus. Bacterial hyperthermophiles of the order Thermotogales live among these archaea and so may have shared in these transfers. The genome sequence of Thermotoga maritima bears evidence of extensive acquisition of archaeal genes, so its ancestors clearly had the capacity to do so. We examined deep phylogenetic relationships among the mal genes of these hyperthermophiles and their close relatives to look for evidence of shared ancestry. 相似文献2.
Background
The Streptococcus pyogenes or Group A Streptococcus (GAS) genome encodes three ABC transporters, namely, FtsABCD, MtsABC, and HtsABC, which share homology with iron transporters. MtsABC and HtsABC are believed to take up ferric (Fe3+) and manganese ions and heme, respectively, while the specificity of FtsABCD is unknown. 相似文献3.
Background
Streptococcus iniae (S. iniae) is a major pathogen that causes considerable morbidity and mortality in cultured fish worldwide. The pathogen's ability to adapt to the host affects the extent of infection, hence understanding the mechanisms by which S. iniae overcomes physiological stresses during infection will help to identify potential virulence determinants of streptococcal infection. Grow S. iniae under iron-restricted conditions is one approach for identifying host-specific protein expression. Iron plays an important role in many biological processes but it has low solubility under physiological condition. Many microorganisms have been shown to be able to circumvent this nutritional limitation by forming direct contacts with iron-containing proteins through ATP-binding cassette (ABC) transporters. The ABC transporter superfamilies constitute many different systems that are widespread among living organisms with different functions, such as ligands translocation, mRNA translation, and DNA repair. 相似文献4.
Automated and manual annotation of the ATP binding cassette (ABC) superfamily in the Phytophthora ramorum and P. sojae genomes has identified 135 and 136 members, respectively, indicating that this family is comparable in size to the Arabidopsis thaliana and rice genomes, and significantly larger than that of two fungal pathogens, Fusarium graminearum and Magnaporthe grisea. The high level of synteny between these oomycete genomes extends to the ABC superfamily, where 108 orthologues were identified
by phylogenetic analysis. The largest subfamilies include those most often associated with multidrug resistance. The P. ramorum genome contains 22 multidrug resistance-associated protein (MRP) genes and 49 pleiotropic drug resistance (PDR) genes, while
P. sojae contains 20 MRP and 49 PDR genes. Tandem duplication events in the last common ancestor appear to account for much of the
expansion of these subfamilies. Recent duplication events in the PDR and ABCG families in both the P. ramorum and the P. sojae genomes indicate that selective expansion of ABC transporters may still be occurring. In other kingdoms, subfamilies define
both domain arrangements and proteins having a common phylogenetic origin, but this is not the case for several subfamilies
in oomycetes. At least one ABCG type transporter is derived from a PDR transporter, while transporters in the ABCB-half family
cluster with transporters from bacterial, plant, and metazoan genomes. Additional examples of transporters that appear to
be derived from horizontal transfer events from bacterial genomes include components of transporters associated with iron
uptake and DNA repair.

Introduction
SPARC is a matricellular protein, which, along with other extracellular matrix components including collagens, is commonly over-expressed in fibrotic diseases. The purpose of this study was to examine whether inhibition of SPARC can regulate collagen expression in vitro and in vivo, and subsequently attenuate fibrotic stimulation by bleomycin in mouse skin and lungs. 相似文献6.

Background
The Class II DNA transposons are mobile genetic elements that move DNA sequence from one position in the genome to another. We have previously demonstrated that the naturally occurring Tol2 element from Oryzias latipes efficiently integrates its corresponding non-autonomous transposable element into the genome of the diploid frog, Xenopus tropicalis. Tol2 transposons are stable in the frog genome and are transmitted to the offspring at the expected Mendelian frequency. 相似文献7.
Background
With the exception of vertebrates, most organisms have plasma membrane associated ammonium transporters which primarily serve to import a source of nitrogen for nutritional purposes. Dictyostelium discoideum has three ammonium transporters, Amts A, B and C. Our present work used fluorescent fusion proteins to determine the cellular localization of the Amts and tested the hypothesis that the transporters mediate removal of ammonia generated endogenously from the elevated protein catabolism common to many protists. 相似文献8.

Background
Bacterial leaf blight causes significant yield losses in rice crops throughout Asia and Africa. Although both the Asian and African strains of the pathogen, Xanthomonas oryzae pv. oryzae (Xoo), induce similar symptoms, they are nevertheless genetically different, with the African strains being more closely related to the Asian X. oryzae pv. oryzicola (Xoc). 相似文献10.
Background
Campylobacter jejuni has been divided into two subspecies: C. jejuni subsp. jejuni (Cjj) and C. jejuni subsp. doylei (Cjd). Nearly all of the C. jejuni strains isolated are Cjj; nevertheless, although Cjd strains are isolated infrequently, they differ from Cjj in two key aspects: they are obtained primarily from human clinical samples and are associated often with bacteremia, in addition to gastroenteritis. In this study, we utilized multilocus sequence typing (MLST) and a DNA microarray-based comparative genomic indexing (CGI) approach to examine the genomic diversity and gene content of Cjd strains. 相似文献11.
Background
Since about three decades, Saccharomyces cerevisiae can be engineered to efficiently produce proteins and metabolites. Even recognizing that in baker's yeast one determining step for the glucose consumption rate is the sugar uptake, this fact has never been conceived to improve the metabolite(s) productivity. 相似文献12.
Background
The Brucella genome contains an insertion sequence (IS) element called IS711 or IS6501, which is specific to the genus. The copy number of IS711 varies in the genome of the different Brucella species, ranging from 7 in B. abortus, B. melitensis and B. suis to more than 30 in B. ovis and in Brucella strains isolated from marine mammals. At present, there is no experimental evidence of transposition of IS711, but the occurrence of this element with a high copy number in some species, and the isolation of Brucella strains with "ectopic" copies of IS711 suggested that this IS could still transpose. 相似文献13.

Background
Yersinia enterocolitica is an enteric pathogen that invades the intestinal mucosa and proliferates within the lymphoid follicles (Peyer's patches). The attachment invasion locus (ail) mediates invasion by Y. enterocolitica and confers an invasive phenotype upon non-invasive E. coli; ail is the primary virulence factor of Y. enterocolitica. The ferrioxamine receptor (foxA) located on the Y. enterocolitica chromosome, together with its transport protein, transports a siderophore specific for ferric ion. Currently, ail is the primary target gene for nucleic acid detection of pathogenic Y. enterocolitica. 相似文献14.

Background
Catheter-associated urinary tract infection (CAUTI) is the most common nosocomial infection in the United States and is caused by a range of uropathogens. Biofilm formation by uropathogens that cause CAUTI is often mediated by cell surface structures such as fimbriae. In this study, we characterised the genes encoding type 3 fimbriae from CAUTI strains of Escherichia coli, Klebsiella pneumoniae, Klebsiella oxytoca, Citrobacter koseri and Citrobacter freundii. 相似文献15.

Background
Elucidation of the communal behavior of microbes in mixed species biofilms may have a major impact on understanding infectious diseases and for the therapeutics. Although, the structure and the properties of monospecies biofilms and their role in disease have been extensively studied during the last decade, the interactions within mixed biofilms consisting of bacteria and fungi such as Candida spp. have not been illustrated in depth. Hence, the aim of this study was to evaluate the interspecies interactions of Pseudomonas aeruginosa and six different species of Candida comprising C. albicans, C. glabrata, C. krusei, C. tropicalis, C. parapsilosis, and C. dubliniensis in dual species biofilm development. 相似文献17.
ATP-binding cassette (ABC) transporters are widespread among organisms, and 56 genes encode ABC transporters in Drosophila
melanogaster (Meigen). Their functions are thought to be divergent. In this study, we examined whether there is a clock-related ABC transporter
by performing genome-wide screening using tissue-specific RNA interference. We obtained five candidates when we used tim(UAS)-gal4, which expresses in virtually all clock-related cells. Because their phenotypes were principally reproducible even when we
used pdf-gal4, which expresses in a subset of pacemaker neurons only, those transporters were presumed to function in pacemaker neurons.
Those five candidates can be categorized into two groups according to the phenotype of the knockdown flies. In one group,
CG9281 and CG15410 (E23), the circadian period of knockdown flies was altered. In the other group, CG5944, CG6052, and CG18633, some of the knockdown flies became arrhythmic whereas for others rhythmicity remained intact. Our results suggest that some
ABC transporters that have a significant function in the Drosophila circadian system. 相似文献
