Twelve natural populations of four cedar pine species,Pinus sibirica, P. cembra, P. pumila, andP. koraiensis, occurring in the Soviet Union were investigated by starch-gel electrophoresis. Frequencies of 55 alleles at 19 loci were determined. Interpopulation genetic diversity inP. sibirica andP. pumila was only 2–4 per cent of the total genetic diversity. Nei's distance coefficient (Dn) was used to estimate the level of genetic differentiation among conspecific populations and among species. Dn values among populations ranged from 0.006 to 0.038. A dendrogram constructed using Dn values divided cedar pines species into 2 clusters:sibirica-cembra (Dn = 0.030) andpumila-koraiensis (Dn = 0.143). Nei's distance between these clusters was 0.232. On the basis of the data obtained it was possible to draw the following conclusion:P. sibirica, P. pumila, andP. koraiensis are distinct species, whileP. cembra should apparently be regarded as geographicalP. sibirica race.  相似文献

In the Japanese species ofTrillium examined here, every interspecific cross produced healthy F1 progeny at the rate of about 50 to 60 per cent of the total inborn ovules except forT. hagae. These figures were not appreciably different from those of self-pollinated or sib-mated examples of these species.Trillium hagae, a putative natural hybrid betweenT. kamtschaticum (2n=10) andT. tschonoskii (2n=20), accepted all foreign sources of pollen grains in manual pollination. These and other crossing experiments suggest that no appreciable barrier has developed that might cause interspecific crossability and that they are habitual inbreeders. Despite theri crossability, a very low rate of actual pollen flow was detected by examining electrophoretic phenotypes of seeds taken from sympatric populations of these species.  相似文献

Differences in color patterns have been the most used feature in describing cichlid species belonging to genus Petrotilapia from Lake Malawi. In this study, we quantified morphological variation in body shape within and among three coexisting Petrotilapia species using landmark-based geometric morphometric methods. Statistic analyses revealed significant body shape differences among species but not between sexes. Post hoc multiple comparisons based on Mahalanobis distances revealed that P. nigra was significantly different from P. genalutea and Petrotilapia sp., whereas the latter two were not significantly different. The splines generated showed that the most pronounced variation was in the head region, in which P. nigra had a relatively longer and deeper head than the other two. The most clear-cut distinction was in gape length; P. genalutea had the longest gape, followed by Petrotilapia sp., whereas P. nigra had the shortest gape. Body depth was shallower in P. nigra than the others. When comparing sexes by their centroid size, ANOVA revealed that males were bigger than females. Therefore, we conclude that color is not the only feature that can distinguish these congeners. We discuss the observed sexual dimorphism in terms of sexual selection and relate morphological variation among species to feeding behavior, which may help explain their coexistence in nature.  相似文献

Cryptic species diversity is thought to be common within the class Insecta, posing problems for basic ecological and population genetic studies and conservation management. Within the temperate bumble bee (Bombus spp.) fauna, members of the subgenus Bombus sensu stricto are amongst the most abundant and widespread. However, their species diversity is controversial due to the extreme difficulty or inability morphologically to identify the majority of individuals to species. Our character-based phylogenetic analyses of partial CO1 (700 bp) from 39 individuals spread across their sympatric European ranges provided unequivocal support for five taxa (3–22 diagnostic DNA base pair sites per species). Inclusion of 20 Irish specimens to the dataset revealed ≥2.3% sequence divergence between taxa and ≤1.3% within taxa. We developed a PCR-RFLP based method for unequivocally distinguishing amongst the four cryptic European taxa of this subgenus, B. cryptarum, B. lucorum, B. magnus and B. terrestris, and used it to analyse 391 females of the former three species collected across Ireland, all of which could be unambiguously assigned to species. Bombus lucorum was the most widely distributed and abundant of the cryptarum–lucorum–magnus species complex, comprising 56% of individuals, though it was significantly less abundant at higher altitudes (>200 m) whilst B. cryptarum was relatively more abundant at higher altitudes. Bombus magnus was rarely encountered at urban sites. Both B. lucorum and B. terrestris are nowadays reared commercially for pollination and transported globally. Our RFLP approach to identify native fauna can underpin ecological studies of these important cryptic species as well as the impact of commercial bumble bees on them.  相似文献

Fish schools are believed to provide antipredator benefits to their members. Two potential antipredator benefits, the dilution and confusion effects, of schooling were investigated in the laboratory using banded killifish (Fundulus diaphanus). Individual risk of being attacked and killed by a fish predator (white perch, Morone americana) declined with increasing killifish school size in a manner closely predicted by the dilution hypothesis. Perch were apparently not confused by schooling killifish since fish in groups of one did not suffer a disproportionately greater predation rate than fish in all larger school sizes. However, killifish straggling from the school were preferentially attacked and more successfully captured compared with school members. Schooling in the banded killifish therefore confers a considerable antipredator benefit to individual group members, at least through a dilution effect, and straying from a school has an associated increased risk of mortality to predation, which selects for schooling behaviour.  相似文献

Schoenus ferrugineus andS. nigricans have restricted distributions in Sweden and are almost exclusively confined to calcareous fen habitats. AtS. nigricans sites,S. ferrugineus is usually also present, and hybrids are frequently found. In this report, I used allozymes to estimate the amount of gene flow between the two species, and to compare the partitioning of genetic diversity in each of them. Thirteen loci were analysed at eight different enzyme systems. Seven loci were variable between or within the species. The two species had completely different alleles at two of the seven variable loci, whereas there was overlap at five loci. In all, 22 different alleles were found. Six of these alleles were confined toS. nigricans, and five alleles were confined toS. ferrugineus. Nei's genetic identity was 0.55.—InS. ferrugineus, three loci (23%) were polymorphic, and the average number of alleles per polymorphic locus was 2.0 (each polymorphic locus had two alleles). InS. nigricans, three loci (23%) were polymorphic, and the average number of alleles per polymorphic locus was 2.3.—The proportion of genetic diversity due to variation among sites (G ST) was fairly similar in the two species, mean over loci = 0.12 inS. ferrugineus and 0.15 inS. nigricans. However, the proportion of genetic diversity due to variation among individuals within sites (G IS) differed markedly between the two species, mean over loci = 0.54 inS. ferrugineus and 0.17 inS. nigricans. Accordingly, there was a much higher individual heterozygosity inS. nigricans than inS. ferrugineus. — Most hybrids were interpreted as F1 hybrids. However, a small proportion, 0.5–1.6 %, were Fn hybrids or back-crosses.—On the Swedish mainland, all former occurrences ofS. nigricans are extinct, but viable hybrids are still present at a few sites in southernmost Sweden.  相似文献

The rapid decline of Acropora cervicornis and Acropora palmata has often been linked with coral reef deterioration in the Caribbean; yet, it remains controversial whether these species are currently recovering or still declining. In this study, the status of ten populations of A. palmata in Los Roques National Park (LRNP), Venezuela is presented. Six of these populations showed signs of recovery. Ten 80 m2 belt-transects were surveyed at each of the ten reef sites. Within belt-transects, each colony was measured (maximum diameter and height) and its status (healthy, diseased or injured) was recorded. Populations in recovery were defined by a dominance of small to medium-sized colonies in densities >1 colony per 10 m2, together with 75% undamaged colonies, a low prevalence of diseases (<10%), and a low density of predators (0.25 snails per colony). Based on allozyme analysis of seven polymorphic loci in four populations (N = 30), a moderate to high-genetic connectivity among these populations (F ST = 0.048) was found with a predominance of sexual over asexual reproduction (N* : N = 1; N go : N = 0.93–1). Both ecological and molecular data support a good prognosis for the recovery of this species in Los Roques.  相似文献

Summary Sonic oscillation was used for the purpose of obtaining clean, chemically intact cell walls. The rate of disruption was determined for cells ofHanseniaspora uvarum andSaccharomyces cerevisiae. The carbohydrate fractions of cell walls ofHanseniaspora uvarum, H. valbyensis, Kloeckera apiculata, Saccharomycodes ludwigii andSaccharmyces cerevisiae were shown to be similar. Chromatography of cell wall hydrolysates of all these species demonstrated that glucose and mannose were the only sugars present (in about equal amounts) besides traces of glucosamine. The cell walls ofH. uvarum contained 78.1 per cent carbohydrates, 7 per cent protein and approximately 0.05 per cent of chitin. Fractionation of the polysaccharides lead to a recovery of 83.3 per cent of the carbohydrates present (30.4 per cent glucan and 34.9 per cent mannan). Saccharomyces cerevisiae cell walls were found to have a carbohydrate content of 82.8 per cent, 6.5 per cent protein and a trace of chitin (0.04 per cent). Nadsonia elongata contained a relatively large amount of chitin (ca. 5 per cent) and lacked mannan in its cell walls. It was concluded thatHanseniaspora andSaccharomycodes are closely related to theSaccharomyceteae but they have little in common with species ofNadsonia.  相似文献

Two Sphagnum moss species occupying hummock areas (Sphagnum capillifolium) and wetter hollows (Sphagnum recurvum) on a raised bog in north east Scotland were treated every two weeks with NH4NO3 solutions to supply 3g N m–2 yr–1. Although S. recurvum moss contained a greater concentration of total P than S. capillifolium the amounts and N:P ratios were similar in both species. Larger amounts of total dissolved P (TDP) and molybdate reactive P (MRP) were extracted from beneath S. recurvum to 25 cm below the moss. Additions of N both increased and decreased the amounts of TDP at different times, and decreased MRP. The MRP fraction accounted for about 20 per cent of TDP and the difference was assumed to be in organic forms (DOP). Nitrogen addition had no effect on the amounts of DOP, but C:P ratios of this fraction changed with species, depth and N addition. Microbial P accounted for as much as 70 per cent of total P and showed seasonal variations, but no differences between the two moss species and N addition.  相似文献

Summary Relationships beween nutrient concentrations and the growth of the fast growing tropical eucalypt E. deglupta were examined at two sites in Papua New Guinea. At the Gogol Valley site a predominantly linear relationship was found between growth and foliar N over the range 0.68–2.04 per cent N. At the Kerevat site the relationship between growth and foliar nutrients was less strongly developed (foliar N varied from 1.77 to 3.36 per cent). The combined data could be described by a second degree polynomial. Height=11.05N – 2.03N2 – 3.52P – 4.46.This accounted for 72 per cent of the variation in height. Summary Estimates were made of the above-ground biomass and contents of N, P, K, Ca, Mg, Mn, Na, Fe, Zn, Al, and Cu in fertilized (N 448 kg/ha, P 112 kg/ha, lime 4480 kg/ha) and unfertilized white birch (Betula papyrifera Marsh.) and bigtooth aspen (Populus grandidentata Michx.). For individuals of both species, fertilization increased the average above-ground biomass increment and the N and P content increment by 150 per cent and 300 per cent, respectively, but decreased uptake of Mn and Zn. The allocation of biomass and elements differs not only between species, but within species under untreated and fertilized conditions.  相似文献

Aphids were countedin situ and carabid beetle populations assessed by pitfall trapping betwen 1983–1985 in potato fields in Scotland treated with demeton-S-methyl (DSM) or untreated.Macrosiphum euphorbiae (Thomas) (Homoptera: Aphididae) was the most abundant aphid. Nineteen species of carabid beetles were trapped but the fauna was dominated byPterostichus melanarius (Ill.) andPterostichus madidus (Fabr.) (Coleoptera: Carabidae). Pitfall trap catches of these carabids were variable but generally lower in sprayed than unsprayed plots for a few days after DSM application and higher a week or two later. Of 1800P. melanarius and 910P. madidus dissected, 14.4 per cent and 30.5 per cent respectively, contained aphid remains. The proportion that had eaten aphids often was higher in sprayed than unsprayed plots immediately after treatment. In additional experiments, aphids treated with DSM fell from plants; four to five per cent of the theoretically applied dose of DSM reached the ground in a closed-canopy potato crop; and no mortality occurred whenPterostichus spp. were exposed to DSM in a field bioassay. It is proposed that observed patterns in trap catch ofPterostichus spp. around times of pesticide application may be due in part to aphids falling to the ground after treatment. Beetles that eat these fallen aphids may be less hungry, less active and less likely to be trapped. Later increases in catches may be attributed to hungry, more active beetles, a consequence of prey removal by the insecticide. Although this hypothesis requires further research, it is clear that the effects of insecticide treatment on carabid populations cannot be measured by pitfall trapping alone.  相似文献

Various experiments of Lotus corniculatus cv. Leo were infected with Agrobacterium tumefaciens strains C58 (wild-type) and GV3101 (control). A maximum of 83 per cent of cotyledons excised from 7 day old seedlings and 63 per cent of leaves excised from seedlings grown in vitro formed galls in culture. Abstract

In the present paper 702 families have been studied belonging to different endogamous groups in three multicaste villages of Srikakulam District, Andhra Pradesh. It is observed that 33.76 per cent of families are consanguineous marriages. With regard to the types of marriages, 12.11 per cent are uncle‐niece; 14.10 per cent are matrilateral cross‐cousins; 5.84 per cent are patrilateral cross‐cousins; 0.57 per cent are first cousins once removed, and 1.14 per cent are second cousins. There are only six couples (0.86 per cent) in intercaste marriages. The coefficient of inbreeding for autosomal and sex‐linked genes, 0.045 and 0.059, respectively, for Chakalis which are higher than Kalingas (F = 0.03; F1 = 0.038), Segidis (F = 0.031; F1 = 0.041), Velamas (F = 0.026; F1 = 0.036), Vysyas (F = 0.027; F1 = 0.034), Malas (F = 0.017; F1 = 0.026), and others (F = 0.026; F1 = 0.032). The t‐tests for mean marriage distances are statistically significant among all castes, but chi‐squares for intergroup difference of consanguineous and nonconsanguineous marriages are statistically significant only among Kalingas and Chakalis, Vysyas and Chakalis, and Malas and Chakalis.  相似文献

The structure of gastropod communities was examined from January to June 1999 in four sites of the streams of Mont Saint-Michel Bay along a gradient of salinity, and the occurrence of larval trematodes infecting snails was studied. Abundance and species richness of gastropods increased from polyhaline (95 snails, 1 species) to oligohaline waters (6672 snails, 6 species). Whatever the salinity, the most abundant species was Potamopyrgus antipodarum, an invasive non-indigenous species that represented 80% of the gastropods. Only one male was found in P. antipodarum populations suggesting a predominantly parthenogenetic mode of reproduction. Among 7218 gastropods collected, 1.2% were infected by larval trematodes: 5 species in Lymnaea peregra (4.4%), 4 species in Planorbis planorbis (12.0%), one echinostome in Physa acuta (0.2%), and a new species of Sanguinicola in P. antipodarum (0.5%). This is the first record of infected P. antipodarum in Europe. No parasites were found in polyhaline waters. The prevalence per host population varied from 0 to 100% depending on time of collection, salinity and host species. In the lowest-salinity site, abundance of gastropods and prevalence of trematodes were negatively correlated. The dominance of P. antipodarum in the gastropod communities is discussed in relation with euryhalinity, parthenogenesis and weak rate of parasitism.  相似文献

Shell growth of tagged zebra mussels (Dreissena polymorpha) was monitored in lakes at 3 sites over 1 1/2 years. It varied greatly with the season and was almost absent during winter months. Shell growth was significantly correlated with seston concentration, but not with water temperature. The theoretical maximum size (L∞) of the v. Bertalanffy growth equation did not vary seasonally. Tissue weight underwent a pronounced seasonal cycle. In animals of 20 mm shell length, minimum weights recorded in September only corresponded to one quarter to one third of the maxima in late spring. Tissue weight of animals from the 3 sites was distinctly different. Carbohydrate content of the tissue stayed below 10 per cent and tended to be highest in spring. Spring maxima of lipids were very pronounced. These lipids were primarily located in the digestive gland. These data were combined with data of gonad size by Borcherding (1991). Results imply that production of reproductive tissue even continues at a retarded rate during winter months, if food conditions were favourable. With poor food conditions, no production of reproductive tissue was estimated during winter; this, however, was followed by an elevated rate of reproductive tissue production in spring. Weight specific production decreased with a weight exponent of −0.24. Shell and byssus production contributed only in the range of 10 per cent to total production. Reproductive effort showed maxima of 30 to 45%. It increased with shell length at 2 sites and decreased at the other site with the largest animals.  相似文献

The Ranunculus alpestris-group comprises six white-flowered species growing in mostly alpine zones of central and southern European mountains. They all are diploid with 2n=16 chromosomes. The common karyotype of the group was established based on 75 metaphases (6–26 metaphases per species). The haploid karyotype consists of four metacentric (chromosomes 1, 3, 6, 7) and four more or less subtelocentric chromosomes (2, 4, 5, 8). This karyotype is similar to that of other white-flowered European Ranunculus species as well as the yellow-flowered R. thora-group. Analysis of karyotypes partly confirms relationships inferred from molecular phylogenies. Species with this karyotype are placed on rather basal branches in existing phylogenies, which may indicate that this karyotype is primitive within the genus Ranunculus.  相似文献

Summary Native plants of Wisconsin seem to show considerable selectivity in the absorption of mineral elements. This was indicated by an unusually high or low concentration of a specific element in a species in comparison with other species growing under generally similar conditions, and by the fact that a species might have an unusually high concentration of one or several elements but an unusually low content of other elements. A capacity for selective uptake of a particular element was in general characteristic of samples of the same species obtained from different sites. The potassium content of some accumulator species was as high as 7.0 per cent when the average concentration in other species from the same sample area was only 2.0 per cent. Manganese seemed to be selectively excluded by some species.Cornus canadensis, for example, collected from a bog of pH 4.0 contained only 149 ppm manganese in comparison with an average concentration of 1061 ppm in other species from the same area.Nemopanthus mucronata showed an unusual capacity for selective zinc accumulation. Samples of this species contained from 300 to 700 ppm zinc while comparison species from the same sites contained less than 50 ppm. Some of the nutritional and ecological implications of the results are discussed.  相似文献

Chromosome complements and 2C DNA amounts of six species ofTerminalia have been studied.Terminalia oliveri, T. myriocarpa andT. arjuna are diploid (2n = 24),T. chebula andT. bellirica are tetraploid (2n = 48),T. muelleri shows a triploid number (2n = 36). Two well demarcated groups of species are recognizable on the basis of chromosome length and 2C DNA values which range from 3.60 pg (T. oliveri) to 12.80 pg (T. bellirica) showing a 3.5-fold difference. Differences of DNA per basic genome or per chromosome are greatest (1.97-fold) betweenT. oliveri andT. arjuna. Two species groups (1)T. oliveri andT. chebula, and (2)T. myriocarpa, T. arjuna, T. muelleri, T. bellirica, therefore are well differentiated by DNA per basic genome, irrespective of polyploidy. The mean values of the two groups are 1.81 pg and 3.34 pg, respectively, showing a 1.84-fold difference. Within diploids and tetraploids there is 1.97-fold and 1.76-fold variation, respectively.  相似文献
