Abstract.  1. Plant–animal interactions, and in particular the processes of seed predation and dispersal, are crucial for tree regeneration and forest dynamics. A novel and striking case of interaction between a dung beetle ( Thorectes lusitanicus ) and two Quercus species ( Q. suber and Q. canariensis ) in forests of southern Spain is presented here.
2. During the autumn, T. lusitanicus beetles (endemic to the southern Iberian Peninsula) bury and feed on single-seeded fruits (acorns) of Quercus , with important ecological implications.
3. Field experiments found differences in the removal rate of acorns by T. lusitanicus , depending on the type of microsite within the forest, the species of oak, the exclosure of large herbivores, and the forest site.
4. Acorn consumption by T. lusitanicus was studied under laboratory conditions, confirming for the first time that this dung beetle is a legitimate seed predator.
5. In addition, some buried acorns can be abandoned partially predated or even intact, and emerge as seedlings; thus, T. lusitanicus also has a potential role as secondary seed disperser.  相似文献

The dispersal of bacteria from leaf surfaces by water splash   总被引:3,自引:0,他引:3

Advances in the techniques of genetic engineering have made possible the use of genetically manipulated micro-organisms (GMOs) for the control of pests and diseases. Before GMOs can be widely used in agriculture, however, their fate after release must be understood. Dispersal of released GMOs will have an important influence on their action or survival under field conditions. The object of this study was to quantify the efficiency of rain as a means of removing and disseminating such micro-organisms from foliar crop surfaces.
Spontaneous mutants of three species of bacteria ( Pseudomonas syringae, Klebsiella planticola and Bacillus subtilis ), resistant to the antibiotic rifampicin, were sprayed on two plant species, french bean, Phaseolus vulgaris , and oilseed rape, Brassica napus. The leaves from the plants were then exposed to artificial rain and splash droplets generated by the impact on the leaves were collected on selective nutrient agar in Petri dishes and in sterile glass 28 ml screw-capped bottles. The bacterial content of the splashed drops was assessed, as was the content of the water which ran off the leaf surfaces. Comparisons of the numbers of bacteria removed from the leaves with the numbers applied prior to splashing show that rainfall can be a very efficient means of removing bacteria from foliar surfaces, but that most of the removed bacteria run off to the soil. Only a small proportion was splashed relatively short distances from the source.  相似文献

We investigate how late Cenozoic orogenics and climatic change might have influenced the history of taxon diversification and current species ranges of an endemic, Afrotropical, insect genus. Diastellopalpus van Lansberge is a near basally‐derived taxon in the dung beetle tribe Onthophagini (Coleoptera: Scarabaeidae: Scarabaeinae) that has diversified into 32 known species primarily centred on intertropical forests. Basal dichotomies in both published and re‐analysed phylogenies divide the species into clades that are geographically centred either to the east or west of the south‐east highlands that underwent uplift from the Miocene. There is broad climatic overlap between many of the species but clear separation along a minimum spanning tree in ordinal space where they are divided into taxa with either lowland or highland centres of distribution. Observed spatial distributions of six defined species groups mostly differ from predicted climatic ranges, presumably as a result of historical constraints on species dispersal. A trend from dominance of montane or wet lowland forest associations in species lineages derived from more basal nodes (Groups A–C) to dominance of drier upland forest and moist woodland associations in species lineages derived from a more terminal node (Groups D–F) is perhaps linked to the stepped trend to cooler, dryer climate in the late Cenozoic. © 2010 The Linnean Society of London, Biological Journal of the Linnean Society, 2010, 99 , 407–423.  相似文献

Two methods, digestion and elution, were used to recover parasitic nematodes from 470 flatfish belonging to species in the family Pleuronectidae. Samples of similar fish were collected from market lots; half of each sample was subjected to digestion, and half was subjected to elution (sedimentation). The edible (flesh) and the inedible (viscera) portions of each fish were analyzed separately. The total number of nematodes recovered by digestion was 1,110, which was not significantly greater than the 922 nematodes recovered by elution. However, digestion recovered 1,062 nematodes of the anisakine genera Anisakis and Phocanema, which are potentially pathogenic for human consumers of raw of semiraw fish. This number is significantly greater than the 608 pathogenic nematodes recovered by elution. Digestion also recovered 242 more nematodes from the edible flesh than did elution. Conversely, more nonpathogenic nematodes were recovered by elution. Approximately half the fish (240) had been collected in Boston markets, and the other half (230) had been collected in San Francisco markets. Fish from San Francisco each contained an average of eight nematodes, and those from Boston contained an average of less than one nematode per fish.  相似文献

Laboratory studies were conducted to determine the effects of horn fly, Haematobia irritans (L.), and house fly, Musca domestica L., larvae on the development of a mixed population of parasitic nematodes in compressed and crumbled bovine dung. Fresh dung (100 g per sample) from a single calf passing trichostrongyle type eggs was infested with 150 horn fly or 150 house fly eggs. After 14-15 d, more horn flies and house flies had emerged from the compressed dung than from the crumbled dung, but more third stage parasitic nematode larvae were recovered from the crumbled dung containing either fly species than from dung containing no flies.  相似文献

The bacterial strain M1T8B10T was isolated from cow dung in Suwon, Republic of Korea. The strain was a Gram stain-positive rod, nonmotile, and non-spore-forming. According to 16S rRNA gene sequence analysis, the strain fell within the clade of the genus Leucobacter, showing the highest sequence similarities with Leucobacter aridicollis L-9T (98.7%), Leucobacter iarius 40T (98.4%), and Leucobacter komagatae JCM 9414T (98.2%). Cell-wall peptidoglycan contained the diagnostic diamino acid 2,4-diaminobutyric acid of the genus Leucobacter, showing B-type cross-linked peptidoglycans. The major fatty acids were anteiso-C15:0, iso-C16:0, and anteiso-C17:0. The quinone system consisted of the menaquinones MK-11 (78%) and MK-10 (22%). The polar lipid profiles contained diphosphatidylglycerol, phosphatidylglycerol, and an unidentified glycolipid. Differences in several physiological features including nitrate reduction enabled the isolate to be differentiated from all recognized Leucobacter species. Based on these phylogenetic, chemotaxonomic, and phenotypic results, the isolate represents a novel species, for which the name Leucobacter denitrificans sp. nov. is proposed. An actinomycete strain, designated M1T8B9T, was isolated from cow dung in Suwon, Republic of Korea. The isolate was a Gram-positive, nonmotile, and non-spore-forming bacterium. Phylogenetic evaluation based on 16S rRNA gene sequence similarity showed that this isolate belongs to the genus Microbacterium, with its closest neighbors being Microbacterium soli DCY17T (98.2%) and Microbacterium esteraromaticum DSM 8609T (98.0%). The polar lipid pattern consisted of diphosphatidylglycerol, phosphatidylglycerol, and one unknown glycolipid. Strain M1T8B9T contained the major fatty acids C15:0 anteiso, C16:0 iso, C 17:0 anteiso, and C15:0 iso, and the cell-wall peptidoglycan was of type B2β. According to DNA-DNA hybridization studies, strain M1T8B9T showed 42% and 26% relatedness with M. soli DCY17T and M. esteraromaticum DSM 8609T, respectively. On the basis of the data presented, strain M1T8B9T is considered to represent a novel species of the genus Microbacterium, for which the name Microbacterium suwonense sp. nov. is proposed. Unusually high levels of acetylcholinesterase (AChE) were found in the nematode parasites Trichostrongylus axei, T. colubriformis and T, retortaeformis. In T. colubriformis the enzyme was located in the oesophageal and excretory glands of the parasitic stages. The highest level/unit wt was found in the fourth-stage larvae, which per worm had a comparable level to that in adult worms because the excretory gland was fully developed in the fourth-stage larvae. In acrylamide gel electrophoresis, T. axei and T. colubriformis AChE and esterases were similar but differed from those present in T. retortaeformis. Globulins prepared from the sera of sheep and guinea-pigs infected with T. colubriformis complexed with T. colubriformis and T. axei AChE, but not with esterases nor with AChE from T. retortaeformis, Nippostrongylus brasiliensis, Oesophagostomum radiatum or O. venulosum. Complexing of AChE to globulins did not inhibit the enzymic function of this enzyme.  相似文献

Cryptosporidium oocysts were inoculated into fresh dung (∼1.2 × 104 oocysts per gram wet weight) and fed to dung beetles to assess the effect of dung burial by the dung beetle Bubas bison on the distribution of the oocysts in small cores of soil in the laboratory. The experiment consisted of five replicates of each of two treatments; controls (dung but no dung beetles) and the experimental treatment (inoculated dung and seven pairs of dung beetles). After 5 days, when approximately 90% of the dung was buried, the surface and buried dung was recovered and subsampled. The oocysts in the subsamples were recovered and enumerated using qPCR. Oocyst viability was evaluated using an assay based on the exclusion or inclusion of two fluorogenic vital dyes, 4′,6-diamidino-2-phenylindole (DAPI) and propidium iodide (PI). Results revealed that overall 13.7% of oocysts remained on the surface and 86.3% of oocysts were buried. The viability of oocysts in buried dung was only 10% compared to oocysts the surface dung (58%). Therefore, widespread dung burial by B. bison during the winter months could substantially reduce the numbers of Cryptosporidium oocysts available to be washed into waterways following winter rains.  相似文献

Two hundred and nineteen bacterial strains were isolated from cow dung. Among these, 59 isolates displayed nematicidal activity against the model nematode Caenorhabditis elegans. Of the 59 bacterial strains, 17 killed >90 % of the tested nematodes within 1 h. Based on their 16S rRNA sequences, these 17 strains were identified as Alcaligenes faecalis, Bacillus cereus, Proteus penneri, Providencia rettgeri, Pseudomonas aeruginosa, Pseudomonas otitidis, Staphylococcus sciuri, Staphylococcus xylosus, Microbacterium aerolatum, Pseudomonas beteli. Among these 17 strains, 14 produced volatile organic compound(s) that inhibited the mobility of the C. elegans nematodes. These 14 strains also showed nematicidal activity against a plant pathogenic nematode Meloidogyne incognita. This is the first report demonstrating nematicidal activity for strains in genera Proteus, Providencia and Staphylococcus.  相似文献

Respiratory loss and bulk transport of organic matter from dung pats in a Danish pasture were measured by a chromic oxide marker technique. Measurements covered the period until a dung age of 7-8 weeks. On average, respiration and transport contributed 46% and 54% of organic matter disappearance in three spring experiments: in three autumn experiments the corresponding values were 25% and 75%. Thus, both processes are important. The rate of transport was highest at the bottom of the pat, whereas the highest respiratory rate occurred in the top and periphery. During the first 10–14 days transport predominated, probably owing to the activity of dung insects, whereas respiration was remarkably low. During the remaining period, transport was probably affected mainly by earthworms. Respiration seemed to be mostly microbial and to proceed during dung pat decay in essentially the same way as did cellulolytic activity. Earthworms did not significantly affect the respiration of pats.  相似文献

Chronic helminth infections are associated with modulation of host cellular immune responses, presumably to prolong parasite survival within the mammalian host. This phenomenon is attributed, at least in part, to the elaboration of parasite molecules, including orthologs of host cytokines and receptors, at the host-parasite interface. This review describes recent progress in the characterization of macrophage migration inhibitory factor (MIF) orthologs from parasitic nematodes. The roles of these molecules in parasite developmental biology and pathogenesis are discussed. Further knowledge of the species-specific activities and three-dimensional structures of human and parasitic nematode MIF molecules should make them ideal targets for drug- and/or vaccine-based strategies aimed at nematode disease control.  相似文献

When 50mM FeSO4 was added to cow dung and poultry litter waste which had been processed in daily-fed batch digesters, digesters subsequently unfed showed a faster conversion of substrate and overloaded digesters stabilized within 48 h. Early stabilization of digesters was achieved by adding 20 or 50mM FeSO4 though the latter concentration was faster. When 20mM FeSO4 was added to the daily-fed cow dung and poultry litter waste digesters, it increased methanogenesis by 40% and 42%, respectively, and increased the turnover rate of total solids, volatile solids and volatile fatty acids and the number of methanogens.The authors are with the Department of Microbiology, Osmania University, Hyderabad-500007, India  相似文献

To preserve insect‐mediated ecosystem services under ongoing climate change, it is necessary to first understand the impact that warming will have on the insects that provide or mediate these services. Furthermore, because responses of a species may be modified by interactions with competitors, it is informative to examine warming effects on organisms and service provision under competition. Dung beetles provide numerous services to agriculture by burying the manure of other animals. To understand the potential impacts of climate warming on ecosystem service provision, we exposed two dung beetle species (Sisyphus rubrus and Euoniticellus fulvus (Coleoptera: Scarabaeidae)), occurring together in the same experimental pats, to warming and measured reproduction (dung ball production and burial, brood production, and egg laying), pat departure behaviour and survival of both species. These two species are likely competitors in pastures in northern New South Wales. To simulate climate warming, we used custom‐built chambers to add offsets (+0, +2 or +4°C) to field recorded, diurnally fluctuating baseline temperatures. There was no direct effect of increased temperature on any measured trait in either species. We did find however that the relative survival of the two species depended on temperature; S. rubrus had a higher probability (resulting in greater odds) of surviving than E. fulvus in the +0 and +4°C offset chambers, but not in the +2°C offset chambers. Likewise, the relative likelihood of the different species leaving a dung pat was temperature dependent; in the +2°C offset chambers, E. fulvus were more likely to leave than S. rubrus, but not in the +0 and +4°C offsets chambers. Our results highlight that it may be important for future studies to consider warming effects on relative survival and emigration because such effects could potentially lead to changes in dung beetle species composition.  相似文献

Parasitized steers were used to contaminate 3 pastures containing dung beetle populations of different densities. Six parasite-free calves were then allowed to graze the pastures for 43 to 45 days. Two calves that grazed a pasture with dung beetle population rendered lower than normal by screening and trapping acquired 9 times more parasites than 2 calves that grazed a pasture which captured beetles were released. Two calves that grazed a pasture with a natural dung beetle population acquired 4 times more worms than the calves on pasture with the increased beetle population. The results indicated that the 2 major genera of nematodes present (Ostertagia and Cooperia) were significantly reduced in number by dung beetle activity.  相似文献
