INTRODUCTION: For many years much attention has been focused on an interaction between the breast disease and the thyroid gland function in the literature. In those studies the question whether disease changes in the thyroid gland can induces the breast disease was addressed. On the other hand there are a few works concerning the inverted question whether the breast cancer therapy, in particular after mastectomy and chemotherapy, can disturb the thyroid gland function. The aim of the study is to investigate the influence of the mastectomy and chemotherapy on the thyroid gland function in women after breast cancer therapy. MATERIAL AND METHODS: 173 patients aged 30-80 (average 56) were included in this study. The studied group comprised 97 women after breast cancer therapy (average age 60). The control group consisted of 76 patients (average age 55). 75 patients after mastectomy of the studied group were additionally treated with chemotherapy, but in 22 women chemotherapy was not applied. The following methods were used to carry out the research: the USG method was applied to evaluate thyroid morphological condition in women after mastectomy and chemotherapy; the color Doppler technique was used for dynamic presentation and fine- needle aspiration biopsy: examination of the thyroid functional state by measuring the TSH, fT(3), fT(4) hormone concentration and the level of antithyroid antibodies. RESULTS: An average concentration of antithyroid antibodies: anti-TPO and anti-Tg was found significantly higher in the studied group of women after chemotherapy, comparing with the control group. The level of fT(3) hormone concentration was comparable in all investigated groups. Nevertheless, the average concentration of TSH was found higher in women after mastectomy and chemotherapy and as a consequence leading to hypothyroidism. CONCLUSION: Taking into consideration the high level of the concentration of antithyroid antibodies: (anti-TPO and anti- Tg), which lead to destruction of the thyroid gland tissue, the thyroid gland function of the women after mastectomy and chemotherapy should be monitored morphologically as well as functionally.  相似文献

BACKGROUND: Autonomous thyroid nodules can be treated by a variety of methods. We assessed the efficacy of percutaneous ethanol injection in treating autonomous thyroid nodules. METHODS: 35 patients diagnosed by technetium-99 scanning with hyperfunctioning nodules and suppressed sensitive TSH (sTSH) were given sterile ethanol injections under ultrasound guidance. 29 patients had clinical and biochemical hyperthyroidism. The other 6 had sub-clinical hyperthyroidism with suppressed sTSH levels (<0.24 &mgr;IU/ml) and normal thyroid hormone levels. Ethanol injections were performed once every 1-4 weeks. Ethanol injections were stopped when serum T3, T4 and sTSH levels had returned to normal, or else injections could no longer be performed because significant side effects. Patients were followed up at 3, 6 and, in 15 patients, 24 months after the last injection. RESULTS: Average pre-treatment nodule volume [18.2 PlusMinus; 12.7 ml] decreased to 5.7 PlusMinus; 4.6 ml at 6 months follow-up [P < 0.001]. All patients had normal thyroid hormone levels at 3 and 6 months follow-up [P < 0.001 relative to baseline]. sTSH levels increased from 0.09 PlusMinus; 0.02 &mgr;IU/ml to 0.65 PlusMinus; 0.8 &mgr;IU/ml at the end of therapy [P < 0.05]. Only 3 patients had persistent sTSH suppression at 6 months post-therapy. T4 and sTSH did not change significantly between 6 months and 2 years [P > 0.05]. Ethanol injections were well tolerated by the patients, with only 2 cases of transient dysphonia. CONCLUSION: Our findings indicate that ethanol injection is an alternative to surgery or radioactive iodine in the treatment of autonomous thyroid nodules.  相似文献

The role of thyroid function in Alzheimer's disease (AD) has been subject to a number of studies during the last years. We investigated the possible relationship between plasma levels of the biologically active free form of thyroxin (fT4) and cognitive function in 227 outpatients with mild to moderate Alzheimer s disease (AD) in a cross-sectional study design. A significant negative correlation was found between plasma fT4-levels and Mini-Mental state examination (MMSE) score (Spearman Rho = -0.14, p=0.04). When the lowest quartile of fT4-levels (<15.1 pmol/l) was compared to the highest quartile (>19.0 pmol/l), statistically significant lower mean MMSE-scores were seen in the group with the highest fT4-levels (p<0.05, ANOVA). The mean difference between the 1st and the 4th quartile of fT4 was 2.6 MMSE-score points. No correlations were found between plasma total T4-levels, plasma total T3-levels, plasma TSH-levels and the MMSE score (p>0.05). When fT4 quartile groups were compared for depression measured in the Geriatric Depression Score (GDS 15), a slightly higher score was seen in the 1s and 2nd compared to the 3rd and 4th quartile groups without reaching statistical significance (1st quartile of fT4: GDS 5.2 +/- 3.8; 2nd: 5.3 +/- 4.0; 3rd: 4.4 +/- 3.4; 4th: 4.5 +/- 3.8) pointing to a reverse correlation of fT4 levels and depressive mood. This study leads to the conclusion that high levels of plasma fT4 might result in a worsening of cognitive impairment and a positive effect on depressive mood in AD.  相似文献

Maternal thyroid function in early and late pregnancy.   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
Thyroid function was investigated during and after pregnancy in 12 healthy euthyroid women. During pregnancy, serum total T4 (TT4) levels were significantly elevated and nearly stable, while thyroxine-binding globulin (TBG) levels progressively increased till the 7th month. A slight elevation, though not significant, of free T4 (fT4) was recorded in early pregnancy. In the following months, fT4, free T3 (fT3) and the T4/TBG ratio progressively diminished, reaching a plateau at the 7th month. Serum TSH levels, measured by an ultrasensitive immunofluorometric assay, were comparable to postpartum values during the first trimester and showed a moderate upward trend with the progression of pregnancy. The evaluation of 24-hour TSH profiles was performed in 5 women during the first trimester of pregnancy. In all women, the circadian rhythm of TSH was present with a normal nocturnal surge, though anticipated in 1 case. In summary (1) during the first trimester of pregnancy, the increased thyroid activity does not seem to be only sustained by pituitary TSH which remains unmodified; the negative correlation between TSH and hCG levels might suggest that hCG also stimulates the gland to increase thyroid hormone output, and the presence of a normal TSH circadian rhythm indicates that the central mechanism of neuroregulation of the pituitary-thyroid axis is preserved in early pregnancy, and (2) in late pregnancy, a marked decrease in free thyroid hormone fractions is accompanied by serum TSH levels still in the normal range, indicating a modification of thyroid homeostasis which might recognize various etiological factors.  相似文献

Tyrosine kinase inhibitors are relatively new targeted therapy drugs used for the treatment of metastatic clear cell kidney carcinoma, gastrointestinal stromal tumours, thyroid carcinoma and pancreatic neuroendocrine tumours during the progression of the disease. Hypothyroidism or thyroid dysfunction is often a side effect of this treatment. Therefore, monitoring of thyroid hormone levels before the beginning and during the treatment of tyrosine kinase inhibitors is a necessity. Hypothyroidism correlates with objective response to the treatment. Sunitinib. This is the most described tyrosine kinase inhibitor which causes hypothyroidism. The mechanism of hypothyroidism is still unclear. Sorafenib. Symptoms of hypothyroidism occur in 18% of patients treated with sorafenib due to metastatic renal cell carcinoma. Imatinib. Hypothyroidism is one of the most frequent side effects of the treatment. Emergent tracheotomy was necessary due to larynx swelling during marked hypothyroidism. Motesanib. Hypothyroidism or increased TSH level is diagnosed in 22% to 69% of patients with metastatic differentiated or medullary thyroid carcinomas. The management of patients with thyroid dysfunction and related symptoms such as fatigue is undoubtedly a challenge to an oncologist.  相似文献

Pituitary resistance to thyroid hormone is a very rare cause of hyperthyroidism. It is characterized by normal, or elevated TSH concentration with high concentration of T3 and T4. Here, we present a case of a 24-year-old woman who suffered from mild thyrotoxicosis and diffuse goiter for several years. She had elevated fT3 and fT4 with slightly elevated TSH concentration. Pituitary adenoma was excluded as magnetic resonance imaging showed normal pituitary gland, alpha subunit was within normal range and TSH concentration increased after TRH administration. Sonography revealed normoechogenic, slightly enlarged thyroid gland. Previously, she was given thiamazole, but without any significant amelioration. Thus, the diagnosis of the syndrome of pituitary resistance to thyroid hormone was established. The patient was given bromocriptine at a dose of 10 mg per day. After 2 months of treatment she achieved a state of constant euthyrosis and following next few months thyroid volume diminished.  相似文献

In order to investigate the effects of short road transport stress on total and free iodothyronines, body weight (BW), rectal temperature and heart rate (HR) changes, 126 healthy stallions were studied in basal conditions, before and after transport. A total of 60 Thoroughbred and 66 crossbred stallions aged 4 to 15 years with previous travelling experience were transported by road in a commercial trailer for a period of about 3 to 4 h (distance under 300 km). Blood samples and functional variables were collected in each horse box, one week before loading and transport in basal conditions (control samples), one week later immediately before loading (pre-samples) and again after transport and unloading (about 3 to 4 h) in each new horse box, within 30 min of their arrival at the breeding stations (post-samples). Compared to the before-transport values, increases in circulating T3, T4 and fT4 levels (P < 0.01) were observed after transport, irrespective of breed, but not for fT3 levels. Lower T4 and fT4 levels were observed in basal II (at 1100 h) (P < 0.01) than in basal I (at 0800 h) conditions and before transport. Thoroughbreds showed higher fT3 (P < 0.05) and fT4 (P < 0.01) levels after transport than crossbred stallions. No significant differences were observed for T3 and T4. Compared to the before-transport values, significant increases in rectal temperature (P < 0.01) and HR (P < 0.05) were observed after transport. No differences were observed between basal I, II and before values for functional variables. Significant correlations between T3 and rectal temperature, BW and HR were found. The results indicate that short road transport induces a preferential release of T3, T4 and fT4 hormones from the thyroid gland in relation to different breed, and an increase in rectal temperature and HR. No significant changes in BW were observed. No differences were observed in relation to different ages. The data obtained suggest that the stallion's thyroid hormones and functional variables may play an important role in assessing the effects of transport stress and a horse's coping strategy.  相似文献

Oxidative stress affecting the thyroxin biosynthesis might explain the proneness of patients with Down's syndrome (DS) (trisomia 21) to develop hypothyroidism. Thyroideal cells are exposed to endogenous H2O2 that acts as a cofactor for the iodination of thyroxin precursors. The gland has high levels of selenium-containing proteins, including peroxide-detoxicating enzyme proteins. The object of the present study was to explore the hypothesis of a role of an imbalance between toxic oxygen production and protective metalloenzymes during the development of thyroid hypofunction in DS patients. We analyzed serum levels of thyroid hormones and trace metals in 38 institutionalized adults with DS, using mentally retarded subjects matched for age, sex, and behavioral function as controls. The DS patients had significantly lower mean values of free thyroxin (fT4) and increased TSH (thyroid stimulating hormone), as compared to the controls. They had lower serum selenium than the controls. A positive correlation was observed between serum concentrations of fT4 and selenium in the DS patients (r = 0.393, p < 0.05). No significant differences were found between the fT4 or the TSH concentrations in the patients with and without circulating antithyroid autoantibodies. Our results support the suggestion that thyroid hypofunction in patients with Down's syndrome in some way is linked to the low serum levels of selenium found in these patients. It is suggested that selenium-containing proteins are involved in thyroid hormonal synthesis, by protecting biosynthetic processes against the toxicity of free oxygen radicals.  相似文献

BACKGROUND/AIMS: Thyroid function impairment has been sporadically described in cystic fibrosis (CF) and ascribed to iodine overload or selenite deficiency. In this study we evaluated thyroid function in CF in order to verify these data and to evaluate if the modifications were related to serum levels of markers of inflammation and growth factors that we have previously shown to be altered in CF. METHODS: Seventeen young adult CF patients and 18 age-matched controls were enrolled in this study. The diagnosis of CF was confirmed by genetic analysis. None was treated with pulmonary expectorants. Serum IL-1beta, IL-6, TNF-alpha, IGF-I, IGF-II, IGFBP-2, IGFBP-3, TSH, fT3 and fT4 were measured using standard commercial kits. RESULTS: TSH, fT3 and fT4 serum levels were similar in CF patients and controls. Within the patient group, thyroid function did not vary in relation to C-reactive protein serum levels, respiratory function and clinical conditions (Shwachman score). No correlation was found with any growth factor or cytokine analyzed. CONCLUSIONS: At variance with the few previously published data, we did not detect any difference in thyroid function in patients with CF compared with normal healthy subjects. This could be due to the fact that no iodine overload or selenite deficiency was present in our patients. Thyroid function seemed independent of markers of inflammation and IGF-IGFBP serum levels.  相似文献

There is ample evidence demonstrating the importance of maternal thyroid hormones, assessed at single trimesters in pregnancy, for child cognition. Less is known, however, about the course of maternal thyroid hormone concentrations during pregnancy in relation to child behavioral development. Child sex might be an important moderator, because there are sex differences in externalizing and internalizing behavioral problems. The current study examined the associations between maternal thyroid hormone trajectories versus thyroid assessments at separate trimesters of pregnancy and child behavioral problems, as well as sex differences in these associations. In 442 pregnant mothers, serum levels of TSH and free T4 (fT4) were measured at 12, 24, and 36 weeks gestation. Both mothers and fathers reported on their children's behavioral problems, between 23 and 60 months of age. Latent growth mixture modeling was used to determine the number of different thyroid hormone trajectories. Three trajectory groups were discerned: 1) highest and non-increasing TSH with lowest fT4 that decreased least of the three trajectories; 2) increasing TSH and decreasing fT4 at intermediate levels; 3) lowest and increasing TSH with highest and decreasing fT4. Children of mothers with the most flattened thyroid hormone trajectories (trajectory 1) showed the most anxiety/depression symptoms. The following trimester-specific associations were found: 1) lower first-trimester fT4 was associated with more child anxiety/depression, 2) higher first-trimester TSH levels were related to more attention problems in boys only. A flattened course of maternal thyroid hormone concentrations during pregnancy was a better predictor of child anxiety/depression than first-trimester fT4 levels.  相似文献

Therapy failures and severe complications in the treatment of 46 children affected with Hodgkin's disease are reported. All children were treated with polychemotherapy (modified MVPP scheme) and radiotherapy (high voltage therapy X-ray 210 KV; involved field radiotherapy). 42 patients came into a complete remission, with a median of 58 months in 37 patients (10--97 months). 6 patients 14.3%) suffered from a recidive, 5 of them came into a second remission. Life-threatening infections appeared in 3 patients. After 9 MVPP cycles an encephalopathy appeared in 2 boys, one of them died. After local radiotherapy a severe laryngitis developed in two patients. An azoospermia existed in 6 adolescent boys examined.  相似文献

Of 27 patients with ophthalmic Graves''s disease (OGD) who had been clinically euthyroid three years previously, one became clinically hyperthyroid and seven overtly hypothyroid. Improvement in eye signs was associated with a return to normal of thyroidal suppression by triiodothyronine (T3) and of the response of thyroid-stimulating hormone (TSH) to thyrotrophin-releasing hormone (TRH). Of a further 30 patients with OGD who had not been studied previously, three were overtly hypothyroid. Of the combined series, 46 patients were euthyroid, 18 (40%) of whom had an impaired or absent TSH response to TRH, and 3(6-7%) an exaggerated response. Eleven out of 37 patients (29-7%) had abnormal results in the T3 suppression test. There was a significant correlation between thyroidal suppression by T3 and the TSH response to TRH. Total serum concentrations of both T3 and thyroxine (T4) were closely correlated with T3 suppressibility and TRH responsiveness. Free T4 and T3 (fT3) concentrations were normal in all but three patients, in whom raised fT3 was accompanied by abnormal TSH responses and thyroidal suppression. The presence of normal free thyroid hormone concentrations in patients with impaired or absent TSH responses to TRH is interesting and challenges the concept that free thyroid hormones are the major controlling factors in the feedback control of TSH.  相似文献

OBJECTIVE: Endocrine dysfunction is a common problem in patients with human immunodeficiency virus infection (HIV). We therefore evaluated the endocrine function in 31 male homosexual HIV-1-infected men: mean age 37 +/- 7.2 years (range 24-52). METHODS AND MATERIALS: Blood was obtained for baseline T3, T4, TSH, LH, FSH, prolactin, testosterone, ACTH and cortisol values. Endocrine function tests were performed as TRH, CRH, ACTH, LH-RH and HCG tests. RESULTS: Thyroid function: There was a temporarily increased TSH in 3 of 17 patients but normal levels for T3, T4 and fT4 (without thyroid antibodies). One patient showed signs of latent hyperthyroidism (no response in TRH test). Adrenocortical function: Two patients had adrenal insufficiency. They showed a normal baseline cortisol level, an elevated ACTH level and no increase in cortisol levels after stimulation with CRH. All other patients revealed normal responses on the CRH/ACTH tests. Gonadal function: 9 patients had elevated FSH levels (tubular insufficiency), 4 patients additionally had increased LH levels (hypergonadotropic hypogonadism). 5 patients showed signs of tertiary hypogonadism (low LH and testosterone, increase of LH after stimulation with LH-RH). CONCLUSION: In disorders of thyroid and adrenocortical function of primary or tertiary origin, a substitution of hormones should be taken into consideration.  相似文献

OBJECTIVE: Graves' disease (GD) with sarcoid involvement of the thyroid gland has rarely been reported. METHOD: We report a case of GD with thyroid sarcoidosis in a 28-year-old woman. Thyroid function was assessed by triiodothyronine (T(3)), thyroxine (T(4)), thyroid-stimulating hormone (TSH) and TSH receptor antibodies (TSH-R Ab). Thyroid scintigraphy, ultrasound and fine-needle aspiration biopsy were performed. The patient underwent surgery. RESULT: The patient had a nodular goiter. Serum T(3), T(4) and TSH-R Ab levels were elevated with suppressed TSH level. Scintigraphy showed diffuse activity as seen in GD, and ultrasound revealed that parenchyma was heterogenous. Sarcoidosis was discovered on routine chest X-ray. Although no sarcoid involvement was found on specimen, the thyroid gland showed non-caseating granulomas on histology. CONCLUSION: Since sarcoid involvement of the thyroid gland can cause hypofunction, we report the uncommon infiltration of sarcoidosis with hyperthyroidism.  相似文献

Background

Thyroid physiology is closely related to oxidative changes. The aim of this controlled study was to evaluate the levels of nutritional anti-oxidants such as vitamin C, zinc (Zn) and selenium (Se), and to investigate any association of them with parameters of thyroid function and pathology including benign and malignant thyroid diseases.

Methods

This controlled evaluation of Se included a total of 1401 subjects (1186 adults and 215 children) distributed as follows: control group (n = 687), benign thyroid disease (85 children and 465 adults); malignant thyroid disease (2 children and 79 adults). Clinical evaluation of patients with benign thyroid disease included sonography, scintigraphy, as well as the determination of fT3, fT4, TSH, thyroid antibodies levels, Se, Zn, and vitamin C. Besides the routine oncological parameters (TG, TSH, fT4, ultrasound) Se was also determined in the cases of malignant disease. The local control groups for the evaluation of Se levels were taken from a general practice (WOMED) as well as from healthy active athletes. Blood samples were collected between 8:00 and 10:30 a.m. All patients lived in Innsbruck. Statistical analysis was done using SPSS 14.0. The Ho stated that there should be no differences in the levels of antioxidants between controls and thyroid disease patients.

Results

Among the thyroid disease patients neither vitamin C, nor Zn nor Se correlated with any of the following parameters: age, sex, BMI, body weight, thyroid scintigraphy, ultrasound pattern, thyroid function, or thyroid antibodies. The proportion of patients with benign thyroid diseases having analyte concentrations below external reference cut off levels were 8.7% of cases for vitamin C; 7.8% for Zn, and 20.3% for Se. Low Se levels in the control group were found in 12%. Se levels were significantly decreased in cases of sub-acute and silent thyroiditis (66.4 ± 23.1 μg/l and 59.3 ± 20.1 μg/l, respectively) as well as in follicular and papillary thyroid carcinoma. The mean Se level in the control group was 90.5 ± 20.8 μg/l.

Conclusion

The H0 can be accepted for vitamin C and zinc levels whereas it has to be rejected for Se. Patients with benign or malignant thyroid diseases can present low Se levels as compared to controls. Low levels of vitamin C were found in all subgroups of patients.  相似文献

Studies on thyroid function in obesity yielded inconsistent results; high thyroid‐stimulating hormone (TSH) levels were generally shown; high free triiodothyronine (fT)‐3 or fT4 levels were described in some, but not in other studies. After weight loss, TSH and thyroid hormones have been described to either increase or decrease. Our aim was to describe TSH, fT3, and fT4 in obese subjects with normal thyroid function before and after durable and significant weight loss, obtained through laparoscopic gastric banding (LAGB), in comparison with nonobese subjects. TSH, fT3, fT4, and fT3/fT4 ratio (an index of D1 and D2 deiodinase activity), were evaluated in 99 healthy controls and in 258 obese subjects, at baseline and 6 months, 1 year, and 2 years after LAGB, together with indexes of glucose (glucose, insulin, homeostasis model assessment of insulin resistance index) and lipid (triglycerides, total and high‐density lipoprotein–cholesterol) metabolism, and anthropometric measures (BMI and waist circumference). Under basal conditions, TSH, fT3, and fT4 were all in the normal range, but higher in obese than in nonobese subjects, and fT3/fT4 ratio was normal; with weight loss, fT3 and fT3/fT4 ratio decreased in obese subjects, while fT4 increased and TSH remained steady; all values were again within the normal range. Albumin and cholesterol levels remained steady, while triglycerides, insulin, and homeostasis model assessment of insulin resistance decreased, and high‐density lipoprotein–cholesterol increased. These changes, however, do not modify TSH, letting us to hypothesize that the changes are due to a decrease of D1 and D2 deiodinase activities.  相似文献

In the Williams-Beuren syndrome (WBS), disorders of the thyroid function and morphology have been reported and programs of thyroid screening and surveillance are recommended. However, the frequency of biochemical thyroid assessment, particularly in the first year of life, is being debated. In this report we describe an infant with WBS and congenital hypothyroidism, due to an important thyroid hypoplasia. The patient, a 1-month-old female, negative at primary neonatal thyroid screening, was referred to our hospital for dyspnea. Thyroid function tests showed a raised TSH (42 mIU/l; normal range 0.5-4 mIU/l) with a low FT(4) concentration (10.21 pmol/l; normal range: 10.29-24.45 pmol/l). Ultrasound examination of the neck showed a significant thyroid hypoplasia, whereas (99m)Tc-pertechnetate thyroid scintigraphy evidenced a thyroid gland in normal position, with reduced shape and overall weak fixation. Therefore, treatment with L-thyroxinewas started. Thyroid hypoplasia is a frequent characteristic of WBS and abnormalities of thyroid function are common in patients with this feature. Therefore, the possibility of congenital hypothyroidism should always be taken into consideration too and, even if congenital hypothyroidism neonatal screening is negative, thyroid (morphology and function) evaluation should be regularly assessed when the diagnosis is made and, thereafter, every year in the first years of life.  相似文献

Radiotherapy increases the risk of cardiovascular morbidity. We examined arteria carotis atherosclerosis and stenosis in Hodgkin's lymphoma patients. We examined arteria carotis of 120 Hodgkin's lymphoma patients who have been in complete remission for at least 5 years. 70 patients received neck irradiation (mean age at the time of the examination was 44.6 years). Twenty-four (34.3%) of them had carotis sclerosis or stenosis, and it was significantly more than in the control group [8 out of 60 patients 13.3%)]. Twelve patients of the 50 who did not receive radiotherapy had carotis lesions, and there was no significant difference compared to the control group. Significant stenosis (>50%) was detected in only 3 patients (in the irradiated group). TIA, stroke or amaurosis fugax did not occur. Carotis stenosis does not seem to play a role in late mortality in Hodgkin's lymphoma, but if the patient has an increased risk for atherosclerotic changes, then regular examinations are necessary, and other risk factors (smoking, hypertension, diabetes mellitus, hypothyroidism, early menopause) need to be treated.  相似文献

Forty three adolescents of both sexes (26 female, 17 male) aged between 16 and 19 years with struma diffusa juvenilis were treated with L-thyroxine for 16 months. Size of the thyroid gland was classified according to WHO. The percentage of stages was the following; Ia-12%, Ib-69%, and II-19%. The patients were given L-thyroxine in a daily dose of 100 micrograms. Patients' compliance and the results of therapy were controlled every 4 months, measuring thyroid gland size with ultrasound scan and determining T3, T4 and TSH in serum. It was found that: 1. L-Thyroxine significantly reduces the volume of thyroid gland with insignificant changes in serum T3, T4, and TSH levels. 2. Ultrasound volumetry of the thyroid gland is a precise morphometric technique, reproducible with high degree of specificity. 3. Monotherapy with L-thyroxine given for at least one year is effective in endemic goitre. The authors discuss also literature on ultrasound volumetry of the thyroid gland and therapies in comparison with own results.  相似文献

Sepsis was a systemic response to a local infection. Apoptosis was observed in the experimental sepsis. In this study, cecal ligation and puncture (CLP)-induced sepsis was established in rats. We found that sepsis decreased thyroid hormone levels, including triiodothyronine (T3), thyroxine (T4), free T3 (fT3), and free T4 (fT4). Besides, we detected the increasing expression level of Caspase-3 and increasing ratio of TUNEL positive cells in the thyroid after sepsis. Furthermore, a series of pathological ultrastructural changes were observed in thyroid follicular epithelial cells by CLP-induced sepsis. This study established a sepsis animal model and provided the cellular and molecular basis for decoding the pathological mechanism in thyroid with the occurrence of sepsis.  相似文献
