On sheltered rocky beaches in Hong Kong, Linatella caudata preysupon the lower-littoral and sub-littoral fringe fauna. Ascidiantests are cut with the radula, while the proboscis is insertedbetween the parted shell valves of bivalves. The salivary glandssecrete sulphuric acid that is not used in prey penetration,as in the Cassidae, but is more likely used in digestion ordefence. In preference experiments, prey were chosen in the sequence:Barbatia virescens (Bivalvia: Arcidae) > Styela plicata (Ascidiacea)/Saccostreacucullata (Bivalvia: Ostreidae) > Lunella coronata (Gastropoda:Turbinidae) > Balanus amphitrite (Crustacea: Cirripedia).52% of all attacks were upon Barbatia Lunella and Balanus wereattacked rarely. Prey preferences by individual gastropods werealso demonstrated. Calibration plots of total weight against wet and dry tissueweight of prey (Barbatia virescens) and, finally, the predatorwere obtained and used in estimations of consumption. On average,an adult Linatella caudata (10-15g) consumed three B. virescens.week–1 The mean weight of B. virescens flesh consumed.week–1 ranged between 0. 208–0.412g dry weight prey.gdry weight predator–1, i.e., a mean of 28.2% of the predator'body weight.week–1 or 4%.day–1. A laboratory-held specimen of Tonna zonatum was fed holothurianprey over a period of 21 weeks. At first, the Tonna consumedHolothuria cinerascens, H. insignis and H. fuscocinerea, butsubsequently consumed only H. leucospilota. Prey size chosenwas in the range 54–200 g total weight with approximately1 holothurian being eaten each week by extension of the proboscis.Consumption time was 2–5 minutes and records of rejectionof living prey showed that food is not cut up in the proboscisby the jaws or the radula but is engulfed whole. Holothurians reacted violently to the hunting Tonna, typicallyby taking in large quantities of water to increase in size,particularly in diameter. Holothuria fuscocinerea ‘fled’the predator while H. scabra and H. leucospilota became buoyantand, writhing, effected simple ‘swimming’. Calculations of consumption show that this adult specimen consumed2% (wet weight) or 1% (dry weight) of its body weight. day–1.This is much lower than figures for other predatory gastropods,i.e. 5%. day–1. Analysis of faeces production, correlatedwith consumption, suggests a residence time in the gut of 4days and an assimilation efficiency of 80.02%. The components of leaf water potential (l) and relative watercontent (RWC) were measured for stands of bambara groundnut(Vigna subterranea) exposed to three soil moisture regimes incontrolled-environment glasshouses at the Tropical Crops ResearchUnit, Sutton Bonington Campus. Treatments ranged from fullyirrigated (wet) to no irrigation from 35 days after sowing (DAS)(dry). RWC values varied between 92–96% for the wet treatment,but declined from 93% to 83% in the dry treatment as the seasonprogressed. l at midday decreased in both the wet and dry treatments,but the seasonal decline was more pronounced in the latter:seasonal minimum values were –1.19 and –2.08 MPa,respectively. Plants in the wet treatment maintained turgor(p) at about 0.5 MPa throughout the season, whereas values inthe dry treatment approached zero towards the end of the season.There was a linear relationship between p and l9 with p approachingzero at a l of –2.0 MPa. Mean daily leaf conductance wasconsistently higher in the wet treatment (0.46–0.79 cm-1)than in the intermediate and dry treatments (0.13–0.48cm s-1 Conductances in the intermediate and dry treatments weresimilar, and the lower evapotranspirational water losses inthe latter were attributable to its consistently lower leafarea indices (L): L at final harvest was 3.3, 3.3 and 1.9 forthe wet, intermediate and dry treatments. Bambara groundnutwas apparently able to maintain turgor through a combinationof osmotic adjustment, reductions in leaf area index and effectivestomatal regulation of water loss. The reproductive cycle of a population of Paxyodon syrmatophorus(Meuschen, 1781), a mussel exploited for its shells in the lowerTocantins River, Brazil, was studied between September 1997and August 1998. Monthly examination of gonad sections and inspectionof the demibranchs of females showed that gametogenesis takesplace all year round and that spawning occurs during the months ofthe dry season. Gravid females were found throughout the period betweenFebruary and September. Sexually mature mussels as small as 23mm in length were found and the smallest gravid female was 32mm in length. The implications of the findings are discussedin relation to the conservation and management of exploitedfreshwater mussel populations in the region. 3 Author for correspondence. The Barents Sea is an important area with respect to fisheriesresources (i.e. capelin and cod). In May, June and August 1981zooplankton biomass was measured along a transect at 30°E,from the ice border southwards. A maximum was recorded in Atlanticwater by the end of June (>100 g wet weight m–2 InAugust the biomass values were relatively low south of the Polarfront and increased northwards into Arctic water (–50g m–2 The species composition was influenced by the distributionof cold Arctic water and warmer Atlantic water. The zooplanktonwas dominated by the copepods Calanus finmarchicus and C. glacialis;the former is regarded as an Atlantic species and C. glacialisas an Arctic species.  相似文献

The energy balance approach was applied to calculate the CO2flux above and within a cassava community, growing during asavanna wet season. Data of the response of CO2 exchange todiurnal changes in the savanna environment were integrated toa growth analysis of the cassava crop. The carbon budget of the entire community was calculated atdifferent development stages. Results indicate that CO2 uptakein cassava appears to follow a linear net radiation responsecurve, dependent on crop age. The maximum net CO2 uptake decreasedfrom 0.195 MJ m–2 day–1 at maximum leaf area development(August) to 0.028 MJ m–1 day-1 2 months later. These ratesrepresent 41 and 19 per cent gross assimilation. Data of energy conversion efficiency show that at a maximumleaf area development, the crop fixed 2.2 and 0.9 per cent Rtas gross (g) and net photosynthesis (n) respectively. As theseason proceeded,n decreased to 0.1, whereas g decreased to0.7, which indicates that dry matter lost by respiration isone of the determining factors in the seasonal trend of efficiencychanges. The comparison of growth characteristics calculated for cv.Cubana, growing during consecutive years in the same experimentalsite, indicate that yearly variability in dry matter accumulationis due to the wide range of environmental conditions presentduring the savanna wet season. Operational factors acting depressivelyon the cassava carbon budget and affecting dry matter productionwere also analysed. The abundance, life span, growth and production of the mud snailsHydrobia minoricensis, H. ulvae and H. ventrosa in a semi-naturallagoon system were studied by taking monthly samples at threesites during 1991 and 1992. The most abundant species, H. minoricensisoccurred at mean densities of 12834 to 26264 snails m–2(10.7 to 25.8g dry weigh m–2), depending on the site.The least abundant species, H. ulvae, occurred at mean densitiesof 185 to 353 snails m–2 (3.2 to 2.2g dry weight m–2).The numerical abundance and biomass of the three Hydrobia specieswere positively related to the biomass of benthic macroalgae(P<0.01). Although H. ulvae egg capsules were recorded throughoutthe year, newly hatched snailsof this species were not observed,in contrast to the other two species. The early spring and summercohorts of H. minoricensis and H. ventrosa seemed to be themost numerous. The average life spans of these two species wereestimated to be about 18 and 13 months respectively. Annualproduction estimates for the whole lagoon system were 29.0 (6.3),5.5 (0.8) and 5.2 (1.0)g dry weight (ash-free dry weight) m–2yr–1 for H. minoricensis, H. ulvae and H. ventrosa respectively.The annual P/B ratio was about 2 for H. minoricensis and H.ventrosa. The reproductive cycle and fecundity of the date mussel Lithophagalithophaga, L. a well-known, ediblespecies has been examined.Sexes are separate and the mean number of eggs per each gonadis 1.894 x 106 ± 1.044 x 106 S.D. Reproduction firstoccurs at an age of 2+years and at a shell length greater than0.9 cm. Gonad activity is annual and is observed at all ages.The sex ratio for individuals up to 7 cm is 3:1 in favour ofthe males, whereas it becomes 1:1 for individuals greater than7 cm. The release of gametes by males and females occurs almostsimultaneously and begins immediately after a decline in thehighest water temperature ( 27°C), an increase in salinity(>31) and a decrease in the dissolved oxygen (6.5 ppm). Smallpercentages of mature individuals appear during the first wintermonths thus lengthening the reproductive period. This phenomenonis attributed to the temperature difference in deeper waters,the delay in gamete release by young individuals, tide, waveaction and changes in salinity. The fecundity of Lithophagalithophaga is high because its life-cycle is adversely affectedby environmental factors such as waves and tides. Fecundityincreases with shell length, more so with total wet weight andmainly with the age of the animals. Summer seems to be the suitableseason to exploit the date mussel of shell lengths > 5 cm. Retusa obtusa held individually in the laboratory carried largeoocytes in the gonad but did not spawn in December-late January.In late Jan-early Feb, however, the first few individuals producedbatches of 8–17 eggs and, by early February, most individualswere producing means of 2–4 eggs d–1 and maximain late Feb of <7.9 d–1. Spawning declined to low levelsin few individuals in late March. By early April, spawning hadvirtually ceased prior to the drastic loss of adults in thepopulation by May. Larger R. obtusa generally produced more eggs than smaller onesand the few specimens shorter than 3.8 mm produced markedlyfewer than those of 3.8–5.0 mm shell length. Twenty of the 34 R. obtusa held in the main breeding period(4 sets started 29 Jan-3 Mar) spawned in 3 or more successiveweeks whereas only 6 of them failed to spawn in 2 consecutiveweeks, so indicating that several successive batches of eggsare commonly produced. Yet in virtually all individuals (exceptat the start of breeding) more eggs were produced in the firstweek of captivity than subsequently. These first-week valuesimply total production by individuals in the spawning seasonof some 112-305 eggs comprising about 2.8-7.6 mg dry weightor, by the Forth estuary population, of 26880-73200 eggs m–2comprising 0.67-1.83 g dry weight m–2. A technique for growing buds, flowers, and pods of oilseed rape(Brassica napus L. cv. Haplona) on stem explants in vitro hasbeen developed. Open flowers and young pods underwent normaldevelopment on a basal medium of minerals, vitamins, and sucrosebut the development of buds was less successful. Young buds(3 mm long) did not develop and only limited development ofthe older buds (5 mm long) took place. Some 3 mm-long buds wereinduced to develop to open flowers by adding naphthyl aceticacid or gibberellic acid. Pod and seed set in open flowers werenot affected by adding plant growth substances to the medium,but pod elongation and pod dry weight were promoted by gibberellicacid, 105 M, and benzyl amino purine, 107 M, respectively. Reducingthe supply of sucrose or minerals to open flowers reduced seedset, pod elongation and pod weight but did not affect pod set.The physiological significance of the results is discussed. The annual cycle of abundance, growth and sexual reproductionof the scyphomedusa Aurelia aurita was examined over a 12 monthperiod in an isolated, shallow, brackish, man-made body of water:Horsea Lake, England. Strobilation started in December and ephyraewere present through June in varying numbers, suggesting a 7month period of near-continuous recruitment. Horsea Lake hasa dense A.aurita population, with the peak abundance of 24.9m–3 occurring in mid-May. Medusae (>10 mm) were presentin the water column from March through January. Maximum belldiameter of 105 mm was observed in late September. However,medusa growth was very poor (G ranged between –0.03 and0.07 day–1 over a 12 month period), and monthly mean belldiameters were typically <50 mm. For most of the year, theabundant A.aurita population was most likely severely food limitedas a result of a numerically and species-poor mesozooplanktoncommunity dominated by the calanoid copepods Acartia margalefiand Acartia tonsa. Nevertheless, the very small A.aurita medusaewere still able to attain sexual maturity and reproduce. Ripefemale medusae carrying fertilized eggs and planula larvae werefirst observed in May and June, although the main period ofplanula larva production was September-December. In November,all females were ripe, the smallest being 19–20 mm belldiameter. At both Horsea Lake and a nearby productive estuary,Southampton Water, planula larva production increased linearlywith wet weight, although compared with the larger A.auritamedusae from Southampton Water, reproductive output at HorseaLake was low. Aurelia aurita in Horsea Lake showed plasticityin its population characteristics in response to environmentalconditions, with both fecundity and size to maturity varyingon a seasonal basis. Medusae appeared to partition the availablefood resources into either somatic growth when food was abundantor reproductive effort when food was scarce.  相似文献

Aspects of the physiology and feeding behaviour of the scavengingsnails, Babylonia lutosa and Nassarius festivus have been studiedand compared. N. festivus has a wider physiological tolerancethan B. lutosa; upper lethal temperatures being 31.5°C and28.5°C respectively and lower lethal salinities 15.5 and11.5. N. festivus was also more resistant to desiccation. N.festivus is adapted to an intertidal environment that is morevariable than the subtidal habitat of B. lutosa. The metabolicrate of adult N. festivus was two to three times higher thanthat of adult B. lutosa, the specific oxygen consumption rateof the former being 7.91±0.49x10–6 mol of O2.g–1wet wt.hr–1. This correlates with estimates of consumptionobtained for the two animals, B. lutosa eating, on average,6.57% of its wet tissue weight per day, N. festivus 15.33%.Standardization of the data for 2 g animals of both species,however, reveals no significant difference in terms of oxygenconsumption and thus the enhanced consumption by N. festivussimply reflects its smaller size. Both species are opportunisticfeeders and can survive long periods of starvation (>100days). The feeding strategies of the two are also different,N. festivus eating faster than B. lutosa, possibly because ofthe more ephemeral nature of carrion in the intertidal. Starvationaffected the feeding behaviour of N. festivus more than B. lutosaand N. festivus was able to perceive carrion from greater relativedistances than B. lutosa. The flowering mutant dn in sweet pea was used as a tool to study14C-assimilate and dry matter partitioning with respect to nutrientdiversion theories on the control of flower initiation. Wildtype plants (Dnh) are photoperiodic and exhibit late floweringand profuse basal branching in short days while mutant plants(dn) are day neutral, early flowering and devoid of basal laterals.In short days, dn plants exported a significantly greater proportionof assimilate acropetally than (Dnh) plants and the upper portionof dn plants had a greater dry weight. These differences werereduced dramatically when basal laterals were excised regularlyfrom the (Dnh) plants although the difference in flowering remained.However, the effect of dn on resource allocation within theapical region may be more important in regard to flowering thanthe effect on acropetal versus basipetal movement. In shortdays, the dn plants partitioned significantly more resourcesinto their internodes and petioles, and less into their leaflets,than Dnh plants as shown by dry weight and 14C-assimilate measurements.These differences were apparent from as early as node 7 up tothe node of flower initiation in dn plants (node 30) and theywere not eliminated by removal of basal laterals from Dnh plants.Differences between dn and Dnh plants in partitioning and floweringwere largely eliminated under long days. The fact that in thisspecies a single gene influences both resource allocation andflower initiation lends further support to nutrient diversionhypotheses on the control of flowering. Philine orientalis occurs on Hong Kong's beaches for {smalltilde}2 months each year, in May and June when it breeds, laysegg capsules and dies. It is believed to have a life span ofone year. Hoi Sing Wan, a sandy beach in the New Territoriesof Hong Kong is dominated at lower levels by the venerid bivalveTapes philippinarum, the population of which in May and June,following spring recruitment, mostly comprises juveniles. P.orientalis, occurring at a density of {small tilde} 1.m–2,feeds voraciously upon these juveniles consuming, in laboratoryexperiments, a mean of 25.day–1. At Hoi Sing Wan, P. orientalisappears to be highly prey specific. It is, however, known tofeed on other prey items and probably has a catholic diet, duringits annual migration from deeper to shallower sediments, accordingto the prevailing fauna. In terms of wet weight, P. orientalis consumes a mean of {smalltilde}4.4% (2.2–6.7%) of its body weight day–1.In terms of dry weight, however, this figure increases to amean of 35.5% and one figure of 208% has been recorded. Althoughthis is because of the large body fluid content of this, essentiallyshell-less, gastropod, using a hydrostatic skeleton to achieveburrowing, such figures further attest to the voracity of thebreeding adults. The fine- to coarse-scale distribution patterns of tuna larvaein the east Indian Ocean were investigated by a combinationof continuous transect sampling using surface tows and randomsampling using double oblique tows. Thunnus maccoyii was themost abundant species, reaching densities near patch centresof 22 m–1 in surface tows, which is 25 times greater thanthe highest previous records for tuna larvae. Patches of T.maccoyiilarvae in areas of high abundance appeared to 5.2 for T.maccoyii.There was no change in the index when tow distance was doubledto 1200 m, older larvae. Lloyd's index of patchiness was consistentlyhigh for all tuna species, ranging from 3.0 to 5.2 for T.maccoyyii.There was no change in the index when tow distance was doubledto 1200 m, which suggests that the dominant patch size was somewhatlarger than the larger sampling interval. Sampling larvae atthe same site 4 days apart resulted in estimates of abundancethat differed by an order of magnitude. The occurrence of the salp Thetys vagina was observed in theJapan Sea during spring 2004. Catches up to 187 kg wet weight(WW) per 2.18 x 105 m3 (equal to 0.9 g WW m–3) were collectedwith 10-m diameter surface-water otter trawl nets. The horizontaldistribution indicated that the high biomass was related tothe area with high chlorophyll a (Chl a) concentration, whichwas located around the subarctic front with the warm TsushimaCurrent. Five prey taxa were identified from the gut contentsof individuals from the high Chl a area. The diatom Coscinodiscusspp. (13–55 µm in diameter) dominated numerically.Another significant prey was the large diatom Coscinodiscuswailesii (219–313 µm) that is an indicator of thespring bloom in this area. The mass occurrence of T. vaginathus appears related to phytoplankton availability, though themechanisms remain uncertain.  相似文献

This paper examines the biology and ecology of Helix lucorumL. which lives in mainland Greece, as well as its growth andsecondary production. A demographic study revealed that (a)3 cohorts exist at any time during the year (when adults ofall generations belong to the same cohort) (b) egg-laying andhatching occur during the months of July and August respectively,(c) the most rapid growth takes place during spring. Study ofH. lucorum genitalia in relation to age showed that the snailsaxe sexually mature 3 years after hatching, when the largestdiameter of their shell (D) is equal to or greater than 35 mm Von Bertallanffy's method suggests that Helix lucorum may liveup to 14 years or more in order to reach its possible maximumsize (48.80 mm) The study of relative growth of D in relation to Ps (peristomesurface) of Helix lucorum shows that D grows faster than Pswhen D12.50 mm; juveniles change their growth rate when theirD arrives at 22.05 mm, and growth becomes slower when adultsarrive at 36.27 mm Annual secondary production calculated by the size frequencymethod gave a mean annual density of 3.39 individuals per m2,a mean annual crop (biomass) of 4.04 g-m–2 and an annualproduction (P) of 5.02 g · m–2. The effect of varying algal availability on byssal thread productionby re–attaching zebra mussels (Dreissena polymorpha) wasquantified. The byssal apparatus was severed and mussels allowedto re–attach to a hard substratum for a 21 day periodduring which they were fed at algal concentrations of 0.0, 0.1,0.5, 1.0 or 2.0 mg C l-1. Byssal thread production was quantifiedby counting the number of new attachment plaques present eachday. Results showed that starved mussels continued to partition organiccarbon towards thread production but the resultant byssal masswas compromised, containing fewer threads than those producedby fed mussels. The daily average byssal thread production bymussels fed at 2.0 mg C l-1 was greater than that of starved musselsand the final mean dry soft tissue weight higher. At algal Cconcentrations below maintenance requirements byssal threadproduction was elevated compared to starved mussels, but therewas no concurrent increase in soft tissue. This suggests thatbelow maintenance levels assimilated carbon was solely partitionedtowards byssus production and stored reserves may have beenutilized. The ratio of organic carbon contained in the byssusto that in the soft tissues remained relatively constant acrossall feeding levels. This suggests that the carbon content ofthe byssus is a constant function of that of the soft tissuemass. These results may explain seasonal variation in attachmentstrength of numerous byssate species and seasonal vertical migrationsby D. polymorpha. Laboratory experiments were carried out on the holoplanktonicscyphomedusa Pelagia noctiluca, which exhibits population explosionssome years in the Mediterranean Sea. Feeding experiments performedon small, laboratory-reared medusae showed specific daily rationsof 13 and 35% at 5 and 20 Anemia nauplii prey 1–1 respectively,while basal NH+4 excretion reached 3.9% (specific elementalmetabolic rate) for adults at 22°C. These values appearto be consistent with those previously observed by several authorsfor other planktonic coelenterates. Assuming that such laboratoryphysiological rates are indicative of food requirements in naturalenvironments, and given the high abundance of P. noctiluca observedregionally, we conclude that P. noctiluca can have a strongpredatory impact in the Ligurian Sea (north-west Mediterranean),particularly during the summer and early fall. 3Present address: ORSTOM B.P. 2528, Bamako, Mali  相似文献

The water and nitrogen relationships of the xylem-tapping roothemiparasite, quandong (Santalum acuminatum) and its principalhosts were examined at a series of sites in native coastal heathlandsof south west Australia. Assessments based on densities of above-groundbiomass, ground cover and frequencies of haustoria on host rootsindicated that woody N2fixers (legumes andAllocasuarina) wereprincipal hosts ofSantalum. 15N values for shoot dry matterof component species suggested these N2fixers were strongly(70% or more) dependent on atmospheric N and thatSantalumderivedN principally from these species. Structural studies of haustoriashowed the interface with host xylem to be almost entirely comprisedof parenchymatous tissue. No luminal continuities were observedbetween xylem conducting elements of the partners. Formationand functional life of haustoria were closely coordinated withseasonal growth of hosts, with some haustoria surviving summerand overlapping functionally with new ones establishing in thenext autumn. Transpiration and photosynthetic rates of the parasitewere consistently less and water use efficiencies very similarto those of the principal hostAcacia rostellifera. 13C valuesof foliage ofSantalumand this host were similar, but large variationsin 13C values for above-ground dry matter of parasite and hostsbetween study sites prevented evaluations of water stress orwater-use-efficiency based on carbon isotope discrimination.Specific hydraulic conductivities of roots ofSantalumwere consistentlylower than those ofAcacia, a finding consistent with more conservativewater use by the parasite than the host.
